They were below league average twice in 40 years.
AGAIN frank, what's your point? They obviously will ALWAYS have more fans than most. That's like saying the Cowboys even drew good crowds when they sucked ... DUH!

Watch the Clems game against Seattle when he K'd 20 and NOBODY was there. I appreciate your knowledge but i've watched EVERY sox game since i was 10 and gone to a shitload, i know what i'm talking about.
Wayne, the league attendance stats prove you wrong. They've drawn over 2,000,000 ten straight season. The lowest attendance being 2.2 million. Aside from the 1994, the strike year the Sox haven't had attendance less than 2,000,000 since 1985.

Clemens struck out 20 in 1986 via Seattle. In 1986 Boston attendance was 2,147,641. The League average 1,798,052. The 20 strike game was early in the season vs. a very bad Seattle team.

I would hope you got a refund for that kind of money.
There are no rights and wrongs when it come to valuations to see a baseball game;I simply draw the line as to how far I would go in patronizing something which I believe is wrong.
Hey-there are some folks who would think nothing of spending two dimes on a high priced Las Vegas hooker for a few hours. Again, it is a matter of valuation in one own's value structure.

The point? Win or lose the Red Sox will continue to draw fans to the park.

                Frank,

Plain & Simple, i NEVER had a problem in the 80's or 90's walking up on GAMEDAY and buying a ticket. Did you ever try it or are you just reading numbers? If they could seat 100,000, they would probably have 15 million in attendance.

24,691 is not a HUGE average to reach 2 million in BOSTON frank. Your numbers are great to play with but your missing my point!

                  • anyone think the mets are starting up a nice winning streak? most streaks go to 10-15 games, so they might take the next 4 or 5 if they hit 6 in a row after 2nite

Everyone should bet the Mets to Win the WS because they have a MUCH easier path to get there over ANY A.L. team!

My general feeling is that for a long long time Sox have always been near the top in overall attendance, and probably would have led the league more if Fenway was bigger.
Sure there were times when park wasn't full such as that night when Clemens faced the Mariners.
However, I would say by and large fans for Sox have always been quite loyal for at least the last 20 years and even in the few years when they were not legitimate contenders.
Boston is a great sports town, and one has to simply go over to the Red Sox Forum every day to say how rabid the fans are.(there are quite a few "fever pitch" types).
Obviously if next year Sox finish under 500 and are out of the race by beginning of summer, it would take its toll on the following season(although management is slick and probably would create the impression in off season that the prior year was a fluke and that things would once again be rosy).
My overall impression is that the effect in Boston at the box office of a poor season would be quite less than it would be in many other cities given the same circumstances.
