I said it before and I will say it again-they have to go at least 5-4 on this road trip. So far 1-3. That means 4 of 5 against KC and Baltimore. If they can't do that, then I will say there chances of making the playoffs are nearly nil.
I say that because it will show in essence how much they miss the injured players, and I doubt they will be able to recover, considering that the competition will be much better with Detroit and Yankees next.

I know that some Red Sox fans think I am over reacting to the troubles of the Sox of late.
However, as a Sox diehard for 54 years, I think I have a pretty good sense of what will happen(2003 excepting lol) in cases like this.
The Sox as I stated before will now in my judgment have to win the next 4 games to go 5-4(I erred yesterday, as I called it a 9 game road trip-the last three are at home against Baltimore).
In my opinion, the losses of a number of players especially Varitek has killed them, and they won't be able to withstand it(already showing big time).
I think that if they continue to struggle before the 8 games against Detroit and NY, anyone who thinks they will suddenly turn it around against the latter teams is dreaming.
Without Varitek especially this team is lost;he adds just too much both in the way he handles the pitchers and in intangibles for his replacements to overcome.
Personally no matter what happens tomorrow, I think the law of averages may catch up to them with Baltimore this weekend.
Sure there is a long way to go;on the other hand if there is a third of the way to go in a horse race and all of a sudden several horses past your horse, which is slowing down badly and several are hot on its trail, how do you feel? Most of us hope that all of a sudden our horse will recover and spurt to the finish, but deep down inside you know its over;thats the feeling I have now with the Red Sox.
Sorry for all the doom and gloom, but barring a 4 game sweep, I say Sox are finished.
I will gladly come up in thsi forum and call myself an idiot if they don't sweep the next four games and then go on to win the division or at least get the wildcard.

Personally I think there is also such a thing as the law of averages which is starting to catch up to the Sox.
I guess one has to be realistic and realize that in addition to the unfortunate injuries, many times sooner or later the great heroic comebacks, Papelbon's ninth inning invincibility, Francona'a managing and a slew of thnigs which went the Sox's way for a good part of the season are starting to even out a bit.
However, I do feel that the injuries do supercede the other factors, and that the replacement players simply cannot do it on an every day basis especially to compete on the highest level.

They aren't as good as everyone thought they were during their 12 game win streak and they aren't as bad as the last 10 games would indicate. But they better snap out of this quickly. I still think they will hang around and compete for the Wild Card. Twins are in trouble without Liriano, so maybe the Sox (the Red one's) can hang with the Sox (the White one's).

With their new acquisitions, the Yanks are going to be tough to beat. Another subway series is a very good possibility.

They ought to send the best 8 teams from the A.L. to the postseason. The N.L. is a joke.
