    • Inside the Paint - Thursday
      Chris David

Before we break down Thursday’s three-game card, let’s recap yesterday’s action and offer congratulations to bettors who took the points. Underdogs produced a 6-5 record both straight up and against the spread and those results included some healthy money-line tickets and improbable rallies.

Detroit (+425) trailed by as many as 19 points on Wednesday to Toronto but the club somehow found its stride and earned a 106-104 road win on a buzzer beater. Pistons head coach Dwane Casey was certainly satisfied to defeat his former team.

Another top contender in the East went down as well last night as Memphis (+450) caught Milwaukee, who was caught sleeping in its first game at home after a long road trip. The Grizzlies held on for a 116-113 decision and bettors on the ‘under’ (212 ½) probably weren’t happy as the pair combined for 136 points in the second-half after the game was tied 45-45 at halftime.

In the Western Conference, both the Mavericks (+5) and Suns (+6) captured victories as home ‘dogs over the Jazz and Spurs respectively. Also, the Jimmy Butler era in Philadelphia started with a loss as the Magic (+5 ½) rallied past the 76ers 111-106 by outscoring them 35-19 in the fourth quarter.

Total bettors watched the ‘under’ go 7-4.

(Straight Up – SU, Against the Spread – ATS)

Game of the Night (TNT, 8:05 p.m. ET)
Golden State (12-3 SU, 8-7 ATS) at Houston (6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS)

We haven’t even finished a quarter of the season and the NBA ‘drama’ level has already reached full capacity, especially with these West Coast clubs. NBA senior writer and handciapper Tony Mejia weighed in on the latest from Golden State.

Mejia said, "Word on the street is that the Warriors were going to ensure Kevin Durant and Draymond Green hashed things out on the flight from Oakland to Houston, so we’re going to see a fired up group take the floor for this first meeting with the Rockets since Game 7 of May’s Western Conference finals. Since Stephen Curry is going to be out for another 10 days, it’s going to be on Durant and Green to figure things out alongside Klay Thompson like they were managing the other night in a competitive, fiery game against the Clippers."

"Without Curry to spread the floor and quicken the pace, I think we’re likely to see more of a grinder since Steve Kerr is likely to start with Kevon Looney and Jordan Bell up front with his feuding forwards before working Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston in to match up with Houston likely to go small. The Rockets have held five of their last six opponents under 100 points and clearly have placed a premium on improving defensively following their slow start by re-hiring assistant Jeff Bzdelik and essentially firing Carmelo Anthony. The Warriors held Houston under 100 points in the last five games of last year’s playoff series after only doing so once in the previous nine meetings between the teams. I’m curious to see where this total opens and I anticipate it will likely be around 220 without Curry. Golden State’s lowest total of the season closed 218 at Utah (Oct. 19) while the last 11 Rockets’ totals have closed at 223 or lower."

Mejia was on target with the total of 220. For the side, oddsmakers opened the game pick ‘em but the early money has pushed Houston up to -3 over Golden State. The Warriors haven’t closed as underdogs this season and as bad as the drama appears, bettors focus on results and the Warriors remain slight profitable.

On the road, Golden State has gone 4-2 (2-4 ATS) and the two losses could’ve gone the other way as they dropped a 100-98 decision at Denver before last Monday’s 121-116 overtime loss to the Clippers at the Staples Center. Either way, Golden State is still a formidable opponent even without Curry.

Houston has been dealing with its own ‘in-house’ drama as well and a 6-7 start wasn’t expected, especially for a team coming off a 65-17 campaign last season. Despite the rough beginning, the Rockets have been in better form and have gone 5-2 (4-3 ATS) in their last seven games. What’s impressive about the recent run is six games were played on the road. At home, Houston started 0-4 but it captured its last outing at the Toyota Center with a 115-103 win over Indiana last Sunday.

In Golden State’s win over Houston in last year’s Western Conference Finals, the point-spread didn’t matter in any of the seven games. The Warriors went 2-2 both SU and ATS in their four trips to Houston in the series. The ‘under’ went 6-1 and the totals ranged from 227 to 208, the latter occurring in Game 7.

After this game, the Warriors will finish off their Texas road trip with games at Dallas and San Antonio this weekend. Meanwhile, Houston has a great chance to go on a run and it should be favored in its next six games.

Atlanta (3-11 SU, 6-8 ATS) at Denver (9-5 SU, 7-7 ATS)

Tough game to handicap and it’s hard to make a case for Denver, who has dropped four straight games yet its listed as a double-digit home favorite (-13). Will the Nuggets finally turn things around and run somebody? Knowing Denver heads on the road for three games against the Pelicans, Bucks and Timberwolves, this certainly needs to be a ‘get right’ game for the club.

Even though the Hawks have struggled to a 1-7 record away from home, they have shown some fight recently and they’ve covered three straight games as road underdogs, two of them coming on their current West Coast trip.

Surprisingly, the Nuggets own the best ‘under’ record (9-4-1) in the NBA but all four ‘over’ winners did come at home. Watching Denver this season, you can see that it hasn’t been able to fill the scoring void of Wilson Chandler (76ers) or Will Barton (injury) at this time. Atlanta started the season on a 6-3 ‘over’ run but the ‘under’ has connected in four of its last five and the offense (105.4 PPG) hasn’t been connecting during this recent span.

For what it’s worth, the Hawks have gone 5-1 SU and 6-0 ATS in their last six encounters against the Nuggets. Atlanta has won its previous three games played at the Pepsi Center and it’s scored 119, 109 and 110 in those road victories.

San Antonio (7-6 SU, 6-7 ATS) at L.A. Clippers (8-5 SU, 8-5 ATS)

Los Angeles opened as a five-point home favorite for this contest and that’s the second largest number of points that it’s laying this season. I wouldn’t say the team has overachieved because it has a lot of “B” players on the squad, but recent overtime wins over Milwaukee (128-126) and Golden State (121-116) were impressive. Winning at home has been a large part of their success, with the Clippers going 6-1 both SU and ATS at home. They haven’t lost at the Staples Center since opening night and this will be the last home game before they head to the East Coast for three straight games.

San Antonio enters this game off back-to-back losses as road favorites, which includes an embarrassing 20-point setback (116-96) last night in Phoenix. Including that loss, the Spurs are 2-4 both SU and ATS on the road this season. This will be the second back-to-back spot that the Spurs will face this season. In the first situation with no rest, San Antonio dropped a 117-110 home decision to Orland on Nov. 4 as a 7 ½-point home favorite.

If you believe the Spurs will come to play and finish off their road trip with a solid effort, then a lean to the money-line (+185) might be better suited. The spread hasn’t mattered for either San Antonio as an underdog or Los Angeles as a favorite this season. When the Clippers win, they’ve covered and when the Spurs haven’t been able to sneak in a cover in any losses as ‘dogs.

Last season, the home team won all three meetings with San Antonio notching a pair of double-digit wins (120-107, 109-91) at the AT&T Center while Los Angeles captured a close call (113-110) from the Staples Center.

TNT will provide national coverage on this game at 10:35 p.m. ET.

          • Rockets get back to .500, rout Warriors in Green's return
            November 16, 2018
            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden scored 27 points and the Houston Rockets routed the Golden State Warriors 107-86 on Thursday night in a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals.

The Rockets (7-7), who announced before the game that they were ''parting ways'' with 10-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony, have won three straight and six of their last eight games after starting 1-5 to reach .500 for the first time since they were 1-1.

The Warriors, who were without Stephen Curry for the fourth straight game, have lost two of their last three. Curry has already been ruled out for Golden State's next two games because of a groin injury.

Kevin Durant had 20 points for the Warriors on a night they were just 4 of 18 on 3-pointers.

Draymond Green had five rebounds and five assists in his return after serving a one-game team-imposed suspension for a dustup with Durant in Monday night's overtime loss to the Clippers. Green addressed the situation for the first time after shootaround but did not apologize for his actions in the heated exchange.

            NUGGETS 138, HAWKS 93

DENVER (AP) - Juancho Hernangomez scored a season-high 25 points to lead seven Nuggets in double figures and Denver set the tone for a runaway victory with a big first quarter against Atlanta.

Paul Millsap and Gary Harris added 18 points apiece for the Nuggets, who unleashed a torrid offensive display to snap their season-high, four-game losing streak.

Jamal Murray, who came off the bench rather than start, had 14 points, as did Trey Lyles.

Denver outshot Atlanta 56.4 percent to 34.8 percent from the field and pushed the pace throughout, getting up and down the floor and wearing down the Hawks, who like to run themselves but were also playing at altitude and in the midst of a four-game road trip.

Jeremy Lin scored 16 points and Kent Bazemore had 14 in the Hawks' sixth straight loss.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                13) Annual tradition here in not-so-beautiful upstate New York. When it snows outside, and it is snowing now. I get on the Interweb and price condos in Las Vegas, where snow is merely a rumor.

Snow is the only bad part of living here; nothing is quite as much fun as getting up on a step-ladder to sweep the snow off my satellite dish.

                12) Last year at this time the Miami Marlins sold off their whole outfield; Stanton, Ozuna and Yelich. Wonder what the odds were that of those three guys, Christian Yelich would be the MVP this season? He had a great year, leading Milwaukee to a playoff berth.

                11) San Diego Union-Tribune writer John Maffei is the only one out of 30 voters who didn’t vote for Jacob deGrom for the NL Cy Young Award. Mr Maffei values W-L record as a stat, so deGrom’s 10-9 record for a dismal Mets team didn’t impress him much.

                10) UConn 83, Syracuse 76— Huskies made 12-21 behind arc; Syracuse was playing without G Howard; things aren’t as easy when you play away from home.

                9) DePaul 72, Penn State 70 OT— Nittany Lions jumped out to 11-0 lead, trailed 36-31 at half, then forced OT, where they missed wide open, game-tying jumper at end of OT. DePaul is 3-0 for first time in ten years.

                8) Ohio State 69, Creighton 60— Second quality road win for the young Buckeyes, who won at Cincinnati last week.

                7) Seahawks 27, Packers 24— Seattle outrushed Green Bay 173-48; Packers converted only 3-11 third down plays. 46-yard FG Crosby missed when Packers led 7-0 turned out to be painful.

                6) Houston Rockets and Carmelo Anthony parted ways after 10 games; who thought this pairing was going to be a good idea? Anthony didn’t want to come off the bench, but when you get older and your skills decline, what did he think was going to happen?

                5) Lakers’ G Rajon Rondo broke his hand, is out 3-5 weeks.

                4) Former LSU football coach Les Miles took a one-time lump sum payment of $1.5M from the school, reduced from the $6.5M he was scheduled to get over the next five years, but that tells me that Miles is going to be a head coach somewhere else next season. If he took the $6.5M, he would’ve had to stay out of coaching until 2023.

                3) Someone on Twitter posted a list of their ten favorite airports, and it started a firestorm of responses; since I only fly to one place, and it is usually a non-stop flight, my list is short:

                1) Las Vegas
                2) Albany
                3) Baltimore (sometimes my flights stop there; they have a Chick-fil-A)

                2) Cal Bears postponed their basketball game with Detroit Mercy Thursday night because of poor air quality in the area due to the wild fires. San Francisco also postponed Friday night’s home basketball game with Arizona State.

                1) Jim Boeheim has been the basketball coach at Syracuse for 43 years; he played for the Orange, was an assistant coach there before being head coach. Boeheim’s son Buddy is a player for Syracuse now; how the hell do they spell the kid’s last name wrong on his orange jersey?

Game of the Night: Raptors at Celtics – 7:05 PM EST

Both these Eastern Conference powers have seen their struggles of late as they meet for the second time this season on Friday night. Toronto (12-3 SU, 8-7 ATS) still leads the Atlantic division through one month, but the Raptors have lost more games in the last four days than they had in the first three weeks of the season.

The Raptors were blown out on Monday by New Orleans in a 16-point home defeat, but tried to turn things around against the Pistons on Wednesday. Toronto jumped out to a commanding 19-point third quarter advantage, but Detroit rallied back and stunned the Raptors with a buzzer-beater in a 106-104 upset as 9 ½-point underdogs. Kawhi Leonard led Toronto with 26 points, but also committed a costly turnover on the possession prior to Detroit’s game-winner.

The Celtics (8-6 SU. 5-9 ATS) picked up their first cover in six opportunities after posting an 0-5 ATS mark on their recent road swing. Boston rallied from an early deficit to blow out Chicago on Wednesday, 111-82 as 12 ½-point home favorites, highlighted by a 32-11 second quarter run. All five Celtics’ starters finished in double-figures, led by Jaylen Brown’s 18 points, while Boston limited Chicago to 39% shooting from the field.

In the first matchup this season in Toronto on October 19, the Raptors knocked off the Celtics, 113-101 as three-point favorites. Boston led by seven after one quarter, but the Raptors outscored the Celtics in each of the final three quarters as Leonard posted a 31-point, 10-rebound effort in the win. The home team has won each of the past eight meetings between these division foes, including three consecutive victories by Boston at TD Garden.

                          Sounds of Silence

If any team was happy that Wednesday was over, it was the Jazz. Utah (7-7 SU, 7-7 ATS) entered Dallas seeking its third victory over the Mavericks this season and left the American Airlines Center on the wrong side of a 50-point defeat. The Mavs wiped out the Jazz, 118-68, as Utah was limited to 22 second half points. Utah continues a five-game road trip in Philadelphia tonight, while traveling to Boston tomorrow for a difficult back-to-back set.

The 76ers (9-7 SU, 6-10 ATS) squandered a 16-point fourth quarter lead in Wednesday’s meltdown loss at Orlando. The Magic ran off 21 consecutive points to stun the Sixers in the debut of Jimmy Butler, who scored 14 points as Philadelphia dropped to 2-7 on the road. The 76ers head back home where they own a perfect 7-0 record at Wells Fargo Center, but Philadelphia owns a 4-3 ATS mark in those games.

Utah captured eight consecutive meetings with Philadelphia from 2014 through 2016, but the 76ers grabbed both matchups last season, including a 21-point blowout at Wells Fargo Center.

                          Right on Target

The Timberwolves (6-9 SU, 7-8 ATS) are glad to be off the road for a while, where they are winless in eight tries. Minnesota has posted a solid 6-1 mark at the Target Center this season, coming off back-to-back wins over Brooklyn and New Orleans. In Wednesday’s victory over the Pelicans, Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins combined for 48 points, while Jeff Teague dished out 14 assists as Minnesota picked up its third outright win as a home underdog this season.

Minnesota welcomes in Portland, as the Blazers (10-4 SU, 10-4 ATS) are looking to avoid consecutive losses for the first this season. Portland built an early double-digit lead at Los Angeles on Wednesday, but the Blazers couldn’t slow down LeBron James and the Lakers in a 126-117 setback to end a four-game winning streak. In the first matchup with Minnesota this season, the Blazers rolled the short-handed Wolves (playing without Butler, Teague, and Derrick Rose), 111-81 at the Moda Center for third straight win over Minnesota since January.

                          Special Delivery

Guess who owns the top record in the Southwest division 13 games into the season? It’s not the Rockets and it’s not the Spurs. Instead, it’s the Grizzlies (8-5 SU, 8-5 ATS), who own a 5-1 record at FedEx Forum, while coming off their most impressive win of the young season by stunning the Bucks as 9 ½-point road underdogs, 116-113 on Wednesday. Memphis handed Milwaukee its first home loss of the season, while Marc Gasol drilled six three-pointers and scored 29 points in the win.

The Kings (8-6 SU, 9-5 ATS) embark on a quick two-game road trip that continues to Houston on Saturday. Sacramento is seeking its second victory over Memphis this season after rallying past the Grizzlies at Golden 1 Center last month, 97-92. The Kings are coming off four straight UNDERS on their homestand, capped off by a 104-99 triumph over San Antonio. Sacramento has been a tremendous OVER team away from home this season by hitting the OVER in six of seven away contests.

                          Buck Bounce-Back?

Milwaukee (10-4 SU, 8-5-1 ATS) opened a new arena this season and started with a bang by winning its first six games at Fiserv Forum. The first defeat came in Wednesday’s three-point setback to the Grizzlies as the Bucks had won each of their first six home games by double-digits. Giannis Antetokounmpo paced the Bucks with 31 points, but Milwaukee allowed 68 second half points (also scored 68 points), while sailing OVER the total for the seventh time in eight games.

The Bucks are heavy favorites against the Bulls (4-11 SU, 8-7 ATS), who have failed to cover in three straight games following a 5-0 ATS run. Chicago has struggled to hang as a double-digit underdog this season by posting an 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS record, coming off a blowout loss at Boston on Wednesday. Last season, the Bulls shocked the Bucks in two visits to Milwaukee, while the road team has won each of the past seven matchups.

                          • Warriors' Green not apologizing to KD
                            November 15, 2018
                            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Draymond Green isn't apologizing for his part in a dustup with Kevin Durant that led to a one-game suspension by the Golden State Warriors.

But Green vowed Thursday that the Warriors are not imploding, regardless of whatever is, or isn't happening, following the heated exchange between he and Durant in Monday night's overtime loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Green said he and Durant have spoken and that they're ''moving forward.''

The Warriors forward spoke on Thursday for the first time since the incident. He opened his session with reporters by saying: ''I'm going to speak on this one time and one time only,'' and refused to take any questions about it after he was done.

''I think there's no secret that I am an emotional player,'' he said. ''I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I play with that same emotion. Sometimes they get the best of me. And (if) it doesn't work to my favor I'm going to live with that.''

He continued by saying that the passionate way he plays the game has led him to much success in his career.

''It works in my favor to the good as my resume speaks and this team's resume speaks more so than it doesn't,'' he said. ''So I'm never going to change who I am.''

In the closing seconds of regulation during Monday's 121-116 overtime loss on the road to the Clippers, Green secured a rebound and, with Durant calling for the ball, instead dribbled the length of the court into traffic and lost control as the Warriors failed to get a shot off. Durant was shown on camera visibly upset immediately afterward.

Then, back on the bench waiting for the extra period to begin, the two traded words and gestured with Klay Thompson seated between them and Andre Iguodala, DeMarcus Cousins and others trying to calm the situation.

It wasn't the first time Durant and Green have been involved in a verbal altercation. In another overtime loss, 109-106 at Sacramento on Feb. 4, 2017, they shouted at each other and argued near the bench.

Coach Steve Kerr confirmed that Green and Durant have spoken but refused to divulge any details.

''I can tell you that I am extremely confident in this team's ability to get through any adversity,'' he said.

Kerr said he's also talked to Green about the incident but that he wanted to keep what was said private. However, he did rave about Green and what he's done for the Warriors in his seven seasons with the team.

''We've been through too much together,'' Kerr said. ''We've won championships. We've lost a Game 7 in the Finals. We've had all kinds of ups and downs and I know Draymond's got a huge heart. He's a champion. He's a winner and he's so passionate that at times he can go over the edge. He always comes back and I know he's going to come back and he'll be his usual competitive, passionate self and we're going to move on.''

Green, 28, seemed amused by stories that have been written and sports commentators who have wondered if the discord between he and Durant will cause the former league MVP not to re-sign with the Warriors next year, or if it will ruin the team's chances of winning its third straight title.

''What you must know is that nobody in this organization from a player, not myself, not Kevin, not anybody else is going to beat us,'' Green said. ''So if you one of them other 29 teams in this league you got to beat us. We not going to beat us. We going to continue to do what we do and I'm sorry if that ruins everybody's stories. I know everybody got a job to do. I apologize for ruining y'all's stories if it did.''

Green, who is averaging 7.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.4 assists this season, went on to say that he believes dealing with this situation will galvanize the team and make it even better in the future.

''If this only makes Kevin, myself and the rest of my teammates stronger, that's what it's going to do,'' he said. ''So you think you saw something before, good luck with us now. .... We're not going to crumble off of an argument. We (are) going to move forward.''

The Raptors hope to snap their two-game losing skid as they travel to Boston to take on the Celtics as 2-point road underdogs Friday. The Celtics have lost four of their last six games but have won four of their first five home stands in Boston this season.

In their two most recent losses, Toronto struggled to hit from beyond the arc. In games against the Pelicans and Pistons, Toronto missed nine of its first 10 shots attempted from deep and in Wednesday night’s game versus the Pistons, they only managed to connect on four shots out of 20 from 3-point range.

With Serge Ibaka and Danny Green listed as probable for today’s matchup, and Norman Powell out, the Raptors might have to rely on Jonas Valanciunas, who’s impact is immediately felt off the bench. Look for him to play more minutes than usual if Ibaka isn’t healthy or efficient, and take Over his 20.5 points, rebounds, and assists total.

                                Nets needing scoring

The Brooklyn Nets bring a three-game losing streak to DC to take on the Wizards at Capital One Arena. Despite the horrible start for Washington, it has won four of its last six and is aiming for a fourth straight victory, pegged as a 6.5-point favorite Friday.

The Nets have a long list of injuries with Rondae Hollis-Jefferson questionable along with center Jarrett Allen. They will be without Treveon Graham and Caris LeVert, who are out indefinitely.

The Nets will need scoring to come from somewhere if they want to upset the Wizards. Luckily, Washington is allowing opponents to score 116.9 points per game – 29th in the NBA.

Brooklyn reserve guard Spencer Dinwiddie has seen a steady number of minutes this year, averaging 27.3 played per game. He’s been efficient from the floor, scoring 14.2 points per game on 47.5 percent shooting and contributing 2.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists an outing.

The Wizards have allowed for opposing point guards to average 25.5 points per game, contribute 6.1 rebounds, 8.8 assists and hit 3.2 3-point shots per contest on the season. Look for Dinwiddie to continue his offensive efficiency and take Over the 22.2 points, rebounds, and assists Friday.

                                Sour notes

The Utah Jazz and Philadelphia 76ers both try to get right off of two disappointing losses - none worse than Utah’s 118-68 loss to the Mavericks on Wednesday night, which was the worst loss for the team since moving to Salt Lake City. The Jazz only managed 22 second-half points and shot 31 percent from the field with just 17 points coming from beyond the arc.

The 76ers dropped Jimmy Butler’s debut in 111-106 collapse to the Orlando Magic, who outscored Philadelphia 35-19 in the fourth quarter. The Sixers will be happy to return home where they have won all seven home games this season. Books currently have Philly giving three points to their non-conference opponent.

Defense should be an emphasis for the Jazz after allowing the Mavs to shoot over 58 percent from the field. These teams have leaned on defense in past meetings with the Under hitting in eight of Utah’s last nine games playing Philadelphia. The lack of perimeter shooting might play into this totals trend, with the Sixers shooting only 34.5 percent from 3-point land and the Jazz making just 33.8 percent of their looks from distance. Take a good look at the Under 217 points.

                                Lock down positional defense

The 10-4 Trail Blazers are off to a great start, winning 10 of their first 14 games. However, Portland is coming off a disappointing 126-117 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. They take on the 6-9 Minnesota Timberwolves, who have lost seven of their past 11 games, but have won two straight after an upsetting the Pelicans 107-100 at home Wednesday night.

The Trail Blazers have had a lot of success versus Minnesota, going 18-7 SU over their last 25 meetings. They have posted a 14-7 record over their last 21 road games when playing Minnesota.

Portland is very efficient at limiting opposing point guards. They rank Top 5 in the Association is shutting down PGs, allowing them to shoot only 38.7 percent from the floor and contribute only 17.5 points per game. Timberwolves veteran guard Jeff Teague has been efficient in his two games back after sitting out six, but he’s mostly contributed through assists. Take Under 15.5 points from Teague tonight.

                                Rondo out 4-5 weeks

We touched on how important Stephen Curry is to the Warriors earlier this week, and sure enough Golden State lost again, 107-86 to Houston Thursday night. The Lakers might be another team that sees a decrease in offensive production as they will be without point guard Rajon Rondo for at least four weeks.

Rajon Rondo underwent successful surgery on his broken right hand, suffering in Wednesday’s win over Portland. Although his role has mostly been as a reserve, Rondo is averaging 9.3 points, 6.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds off the bench. This will likely open up minutes for Lonzo Ball and help get Josh Hart involved in the offense. These two players in particular might be worth a closer look moving forward until Rondo’s return. Los Angeles opens a three-game Eastern Conference road swing at Orlando Saturday and is 3-3 ATS as a visitor this season.
