Game of the Night: Clippers at Thunder – 8:05 PM EST

The focus in Los Angeles this season will be on the Lakers with the addition of LeBron James. However, the Clippers (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) enter Tuesday’s action owning a better record than the Lakers so far in spite of no star power. The Clippers are coming off a pair of impressive blowout victories over the Rockets and Wizards, while scoring over 133 points in each win. In Sunday’s 136-104 rout of Washington, not only did the Clips easily cash as 3 ½-point favorites, but L.A. drilled 16 three-pointers and nine different players scored in double-figures.

The Thunder (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS) has crashed to a slow start as it took Oklahoma City five games to pick up its first win of the season. OKC held off Phoenix on Sunday, 117-110, but failed to cash as 13 ½-point favorites thanks to the Suns outscoring the Thunder, 34-21 in the fourth quarter. Both Russell Westbrook and Paul George scored 23 points each, while Nerlens Noel dropped a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds for OKC.

In their first meeting of the season at Staples Center on October 19, the Clippers rallied past the Thunder, 108-92 as L.A. outscored OKC in the fourth, 37-15. The Thunder played without Westbrook, who was recovering from knee surgery, as the Clippers were led by Tobias Harris and Danilo Gallinari’s 26 points apiece. The Thunder have not scored more points their opponent in the fourth quarter this season, while only twice putting up more second half points than its foe.

          Back to Beantown

As Boston is still in a frenzy over the Red Sox winning the World Series, the Celtics (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) are looking for an NBA Finals trip. Last summer, they came up one game short of that goal, but Boston is back at TD Garden following back-to-back road wins at Oklahoma City and Detroit. In Saturday’s road blowout of the Pistons, the Celtics bolted out to a 22-point halftime lead in spite of nine combined points from Kyrie Irving and Jayson Tatum.

The Pistons (4-1 SU, 1-4 ATS) suffered their first loss of the season in Saturday’s 109-89 setback to Boston, the fifth consecutive home defeat to the Celtics since the start of the 2016-17 campaign. However, Detroit has covered in each of its past three trips to TD Garden, including as a six-point underdog in last November’s 118-108 triumph. Detroit is hitting the road for only the second time this season as the Pistons edged the Bulls, 118-116 as 4 ½-point favorites on October 20.

          Houston…We (You Know the Rest)

The Rockets (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS) have yet to win a home game this season, sitting at 0-3 in three games at the Toyota Center. James Harden remains sidelined with a hamstring injury as Houston is coming off back-to-back double-digit home losses to the Jazz and Clippers. In Friday’s 133-113 setback to L.A., the Rockets shot 38% from the floor, while the starting backcourt of Chris Paul and Eric Gordon combined for 6-of-27 shooting.

The Blazers (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) travel to Texas after knocking off the Pacers last night, 103-93 as Portland is playing with no rest for the first time this season. Portland put together its best defensive effort of the season by limiting Indiana to 41% shooting, while seven Blazers finished in double-figures. The Blazers had their issues with the Rockets last season by losing all four meetings, but Portland managed to pick up three covers as an underdog.

          Top of the Atlantic

The three-team race to win the Atlantic division this season will be a good one between the Celtics, Raptors, and 76ers. Toronto and Philadelphia meet up tonight north of the border as the Raptors (6-1 SU, 3-4 ATS) are coming off their first loss of the season. Kawhi Leonard didn’t suit up in Monday’s 124-109 setback at Milwaukee, as the Raptors shot 9-of-45 from three-point range, including 0-for-9 from Kyle Lowry. Toronto is currently riding an 0-3 ATS streak, since covering three games in a row.

The 76ers (4-3 SU, 2-5 ATS) are also playing on a back-to-back after pulling away from the Hawks, 113-92 as 11 ½-point favorites. Ben Simmons paced Philadelphia with 21 points and 12 rebounds, as the 76ers improved to 4-0 at home. However, all three losses for the Sixers have come away from Wells Fargo Center, while Philadelphia is 0-2 SU/ATS as an underdog. Last season, the Raptors had their way with the 76ers by winning three of four meetings, including a pair of double-digit blowouts at home.

          Hocus Pocus

With Halloween on the horizon, the league has put a spell on the Wizards. Washington (1-5 SU, 1-5 ATS) is two seasons removed from capturing the Southeast division title, but the Wizards are currently at the bottom of the division through six games. Washington wraps up a five-game road trip in Memphis as the Wizards are coming off a 32-point rout at the hands of the Clippers, while also falling to the Kings and Warriors. The lone victory on the season came in overtime at Portland, but the Wizards have yielded at least 111 points in regulation in all six games.

The Grizzlies (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) aren’t back to being a playoff team, like they were from 2011-17. However, Memphis has bounced back nicely from a 111-83 opening night loss to Indiana to win three of the past four games. The Grizzlies are a perfect 2-0 SU/ATS at FedEx Forum, although Memphis routed Atlanta and Phoenix. Memphis dropped both matchups with Washington last season, as the Grizzlies hit the road for three games following Tuesday’s contest starting in Utah.

          Second Time Around

Atlanta and Cleveland met last Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena as the Hawks torched the Cavaliers, 133-111 as eight-point underdogs. Rookie Trae Young posted 35 points and 11 assists for Atlanta, who picked up its first win of the season. Now, these two teams hook up again at the “Q” but it’s Cleveland who is remains winless and has sent its head coach packing after six games.

The Cavaliers (0-6 SU, 3-3 ATS) are playing without the injured Kevin Love, while head coach Tyronn Lue was relieved of his duties this past weekend. Cleveland hasn’t been competitive at home this season by losing all three games at the “Q” by double-digits, including Saturday’s 119-107 defeat to Indiana as seven-point underdogs. The Hawks (2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS) saw their modest two-game winning streak end in Saturday’s 12-point home loss to the Bulls, but Atlanta held its first opponent below 100 points on the season.

                  • Cavaliers beat Hawks to get first win after firing Lue
                    October 30, 2018
                    By The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) Rodney Hood scored a season-high 26 points, Cedi Osman added 20 and Cleveland ended its six-game losing streak to start the season, beating the Atlanta Hawks 136-114 on Tuesday night in the Cavaliers' first game since coach Tyronn Lue was fired.

The Cavs came in as the NBA's only winless team, and Lue paid the price for club's slow start.

But with Larry Drew serving as Cleveland's ''acting'' coach while he tries to get the team to restructure his contract, the Cavs played a complete game - Cleveland had seven players in double figures - and avoided their first 0-7 start since 1995-96.

George Hill and rookie Collin Sexton scored 17 apiece, and Tristan Thompson had 13 rebounds for Cleveland.

Rookie Trae Young scored 24 and Alex Len 22 for the Hawks. Young scored a season-high 35 against the Cavs on Oct. 21, wrecking their home opener.

                    RAPTORS 129, 76ERS 112

TORONTO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points, Pascal Siakam had 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, and Toronto bounced back from its first loss of the season by routing Philadelphia 129-112, handing the 76ers their 12th consecutive defeat north of the border.

Kyle Lowry had 20 points and 13 assists, extending his streak of double-digit assist games to a career-best six. Jonas Valanciunas scored a season-high 23 points and Serge Ibaka had 16 as the Raptors improved to 6-0 at home.

Joel Embiid scored 31 points, Robert Covington had 15 and JJ Redick scored 13 as the 76ers lost for the first time in three games. Philadelphia is 0-4 on the road.

Ben Simmons narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, but also committed 11 turnovers.

                    THUNDER 128, CLIPPERS 110

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook scored 32 points and had another run-in with Patrick Beverley in Oklahoma City victory over Los Angeles.

The Thunder outscored the Clippers 39-10 in the third quarter, and the only drama in the fourth was the dustup between Westbrook and Beverley. Beverley dove at Westbrook's left knee, and both were issued technical after jawing in front of the benches. Police officers stepped onto the court to help keep the teams separated. Upon review, Beverley's foul was ruled a flagrant 1.

Westbrook tore the lateral meniscus in his right knee during the playoffs in 2013 when Beverley lunged for the ball as Westbrook prepared to call timeout.

Paul George also had 32 points, Steven Adams had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Dennis Schroder added 15 points for the Thunder, who won their second straight after four losses to start the season.

                    TRAIL BLAZERS 104, ROCKETS 85

HOUSTON (AP) - Damian Lillard and Jusuf Nurkic scored 22 points each, and Portland never trailed in a trouncing of struggling Houston.

The Rockets dropped their fourth straight in their second game without James Harden, who is out with a hamstring injury, to fall to 1-5. After entering the season with eyes on a championship, the Rockets have rarely even been competitive, dropping their four home games by an average of more than 17 points.

Now they face a season-long five-game road trip where they'll likely be without Harden and fellow starter James Ennis (right hamstring) for at least the first game and possibly more.

Chris Paul led Houston with 17 points and nine assists in his second game back after a two-game suspension for his role in a fight with the Los Angeles Lakers.

                    CELTICS 108, PISTONS 105

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving scored a season-high 31 points, Marcus Morris had 15 points and nine rebounds and Boston beat Detroit, handing the Pistons back-to-back losses after a 4-0 start.

Jayson Tatum scored 16, Jaylen Brown had 14 points and Al Horford scored 11 for Boston.

Blake Griffin had 24 points and 15 rebounds for Detroit, which couldn't recover after scoring just 13 points in the third quarter. The Pistons chopped Boston's 14-point lead down to a point with 4:21 left to play, and then again with 12 seconds remaining, but couldn't quite complete the comeback.

Boston, which beat Detroit on the road 109-89 on Saturday, is still the only team to beat the Pistons this season.

                    HORNETS 125, HEAT 113

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Tony Parker had 24 points and 11 assists to lead a big night from Charlotte's bench, and the Hornets beat Miami.

Behind Parker, who provided a spark all game long with his scoring, passing and decision-making, Charlotte's reserves outscored Miami's 66-46. Malik Monk had 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including four 3-pointers, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist contributed 14 points and eight rebounds for the second unit.

Among the starters, Nic Batum had 20 points and Kemba Walker had 19, his lowest output of the season, as the Hornets beat the Heat for the second time in 10 days.

Walker still played a big role, helping squash a fourth-quarter comeback sparked by Dwyane Wade, who led Miami with 19 points and made four 3-pointers. Walker knocked down a pair of 3s in the final 3+ minutes to push Charlotte's lead back to double digits.

                    KINGS 107, MAGIC 99

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Buddy Hield finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Sacramento beat Orlando and extended its winning streak to four games.

Hield scored six points in a 13-2 run to close out the third quarter and the Kings held on for the victory and matched their longest winning streak since February 2017.

Nemanja Bjelica finished with 21 points for Sacramento, and Willie Cauley-Stein added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Aaron Gordon had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic, who lost their third straight. Terrence Ross came off the bench to score 17 points, and Nikola Vucevic finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

                    GRIZZLIES 107, WIZARDS 95

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Garrett Temple scored 20 points, Marc Gasol and Mike Conley added 19 apiece and Memphis sent Washington to its fourth straight loss.

Shelvin Mack added 14 for Memphis, which won its second straight and opened the season 3-0 at home. Conley added seven assists, while Temple had seven rebounds.

John Wall led Washington with 22 points, while backcourt mate Bradley Beal scored 17 points. Kelly Oubre finished with 16 points, and Otto Porter contributed 15.

                        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                        13) Hard to believe that Sunday night’s Packer-Patriot game will be only second time that Aaron Rodgers-Tom Brady have faced each other in a regular season game. Green Bay won the first meeting, 26-21 at home four years ago.

                        12) Giants’ backup QB Kyle Lauletta was arrested in New Jersey Tuesday morning for a third-degree offense of eluding police as well as obstructing justice and resisting arrest. Lauletta has a history of dangerous driving, according to the Weehawken PD in New Jersey.

The kid hasn’t taken an NFL snap, but drives a Jaguar and apparently not very well; he wasn’t at practice Tuesday, so doubtful he replaces Eli Manning anytime soon.

                        11) Ben Roethlisberger is playing thru a broken LEFT index finger; non-throwing hand makes it whole lot better, but I’m sure that taking snaps from center still hurts like hell.

                        10) NFL trades at the deadline Tuesday:

                        — Broncos traded WR DeMaryus Thomas to the Texans, who they play Sunday.
                        — Rams acquired pass rusher Dante Fowler from Jacksonville.
                        — Eagles acquired WR Golden Tate from Detroit.
                        — Packers traded RB Ty Montgomery to Houston.

                        9) Buffalo Bills’ QB Derek Anderson (concussion) is out Sunday, meaning that Nathan Peterman gets another start. Line opened at 8.5, is up to 9.5 as I type this (10 at the Wynn), By kickoff on Sunday, line could get to 11 or 12— not lot of support for Peterman out there.

Matt Barkley was signed to be Buffalo’s backup QB; Terrelle Pryor was also signed; he could be a wildcat QB, seeing how he once played QB for the Raiders, before moving to WR. Going to be a long couple months for Bills coaches/fans.

                        8) Denver QB Case Keenum was with the Texans in 2014; apparently that year coach Bill O’Brien told Keenum that he “would never be more than a 3rd string NFL QB.”

Now that Keenum is making $18M a year playing for the Broncos, wonder what he’ll say to O’Brien Sunday when the Texans visit Denver?

                        7) A college football player at Maryland passed away during off-season workouts; the coach was suspended, but Tuesday DJ Durkin got his job back, and not everyone is happy about it.

When Durkin addressed the players for the first time, several players walked out, including some starters. Saturday’s home game with Michigan State should be interesting.

                        6) Marlins’ catcher JT Realmuto has let it be known that he wants to be traded, and will not sign a long-term deal with Miami. He is by far their best player, should bring back a pretty good haul. Good catchers are hard to find.

                        5) Chicago White Sox turned down P James Shields’ 2019 option, paid him $2M to go away; same thing for Milwaukee with Mike Moustakas, Joakim Soria ($1M each).

                        4) This isn’t a criticism or a complaint, just a statement of fact: 41.9% of runs scored this in postseason scored on home runs; during the season, 40.3% of runs scored via taters.

                        3) I don’t think Stephen Curry is getting enough credit for how much he has helped basketball, as a whole; kids see how great a shooter he is and they work more on their games, and now shooting has become so much better. Skilled basketball players are way more fun to watch.

Curry isn’t a dunker; he isn’t huge (6-3, 190), but he is incredibly skilled because he works his butt off on those skills, and that has caught on all over the country. Good for him.

                        2) Klay Thompson was 14-24 from the arc Monday night in Golden State’s 149-124 win over the Bulls, who are not good. 14 treys is one game is an all-time NBA record. Coming into the game, Thompson was 5-36 from the arc for the season.

Golden State led the Bulls 92-50 at halftime…..at HALFTIME!!!!!

How about competing? Chicago has an awful team…..embarrassing.

                        1) On NBA.TV, Isiah Thomas was killing the Bulls at halftime; Chicago’s own PR people put out a tweet mocking the team’s first half. No bueno.
