          • Irving, Celtics beat Heat 107-99 for 4th straight win
            January 21, 2019
            By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Klay Thompson set an NBA record by making his first 10 attempts from 3-point range, scoring 44 points as the Golden State Warriors beat the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers 130-111 on Monday night to match a season high with their eighth consecutive victory.

Thompson finished 10 of 11 from beyond the arc and the two-time defending champions won their seventh straight road game. The star guard had 23 points in the third quarter, connecting on seven 3s as the Warriors stretched their lead to 36 points. He finally missed from deep late in the period.

Kevin Durant added 20 points and Stephen Curry had 11 points and 12 assists for Golden State.

Ivica Zubac led Los Angeles with 18 points. The Lakers were without their primary playmakers in LeBron James, Lonzo Ball and Rajon Rondo. They fell to 5-9 without James, whose left groin strain has forced him out for the longest stretch of his 16-year career.

            76ERS 121, ROCKETS 93

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid had 32 points and 14 rebounds to lead Philadelphia past fellow MVP contender James Harden and Houston.

Harden, selected Western Conference player of the week earlier in the day, finished with 37 points - giving him 20 straight games with at least 30.

Embiid's 24 first-half points helped Philadelphia to a 65-50 halftime lead, and he punctuated an entertaining opening 24 minutes by pinning Harden's layup attempt with 7.5 seconds left for a crowd-pleasing block. The duo had to be separated with 38.7 seconds left in the half, with each being issued a technical, after Harden took exception to Embiid's foul on him.

The 76ers broke the game open in a dominant third quarter as they outscored Houston 29-13 to take a 94-63 advantage into the fourth.

            CELTICS 107, HEAT 99

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving had 26 points and 10 assists, Al Horford added 16 points and 12 rebounds and Boston beat Miami for its fourth straight victory.

Irving has had 20 or more points and 10 or more assists in 11 games, the first Celtics player to accomplish the feat since Hall of Famer Larry Bird, who also had 11 in 1986-87.

Jayson Tatum added 19 points and Marcus Morris 17 for the Celtics, who won their ninth straight at home and improved to 18-5 at TD Garden.

Derrick Jones Jr. and Dion Waiters led the Heat with 18 points apiece.

            BUCKS 116, MAVERICKS 106

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 31 points and 15 rebounds, and Milwaukee beat Dallas.

Eric Bledsoe had 21 points and Malcolm Brogdon scored 19 for the Bucks, who have won five straight and 12 of their last 14 to improve to 34-12 overall.

Luka Doncic had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for Dallas, which has lost four in a row. Jalen Brunson had 16 points.

After trailing at the half, the Bucks built a double-digit lead in the third quarter and led 92-84 heading to the fourth.

            TRAIL BLAZERS 109, JAZZ 104

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 26 points and Jusuf Nurkic had 17 in the third quarter to lift Portland past Utah.

In a matchup between two of the NBA's hottest teams, the Blazers made 50 percent of their shots and piled up 30 assists to snap Utah's six-game winning streak.

Nurkic finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and six blocks. CJ McCollum added 14 points for Portland, which has won seven of nine.

Donovan Mitchell continued his high-scoring streak with 36 points for Utah. Jae Crowder scored 15 while Rudy Gobert had 10 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.

            PELICANS 105, GRIZZLIES 85

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Jrue Holiday and Nikola Mirotic scored 21 points, Jahlil Okafor and Julius Randle had 20, and balanced New Orleans beat Memphis without injured star Anthony Davis.

Okafor set a season high for points and added 10 rebounds filling in for Davis. Randle had 12 rebounds and Holiday grabbed 11 as New Orleans out-rebounded the Grizzlies 50-35. It was the Pelicans' first game since announcing Davis would miss 1-2 weeks with a left index finger sprain.

Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 22 points, while Mike Conley added 20 and eight assists for Memphis, which lost its sixth straight and 12th in the last 13.

            NETS 123, KINGS 94

NEW YORK (AP) - D'Angelo Russell had 31 points and eight assists, and surging Brooklyn won its fourth straight game by running away from Sacramento in the second half.

Russell, announced as the Eastern Conference player of the week shortly before the game, made seven 3-pointers. He hit all four 3-point attempts and was 5 for 6 overall in the third quarter, fueling a 22-4 spurt that launched the Nets into the lead for good.

Joe Harris added 19 points and rookie Rodions Kurucs had 16 for the Nets, who won for the 17th time in 22 games.

Reserve guard Bogdan Bogdanovic had 22 points and 11 assists for the Kings, but starters Buddy Hield and De'Aaron Fox both had quiet games.

            THUNDER 127, KNICKS 109

NEW YORK (AP) - Paul George scored 31 points and Russell Westbrook had 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists as Oklahoma City beat New York.

George and Westbrook both sat out the fourth quarter. Dennis Schroder added 17 points for the Thunder while both Jerami Grant and Abdel Nader each had 16.

The Knicks have lost six in a row and 14 of 15. They have dropped nine straight at Madison Square Garden.

The Wizards held the Pistons to 30 percent shooting from the floor in the first half and never let their lead dip below 10 points in the second. Detroit's 87 points were the fewest by a Washington opponent this season.

Seven Wizards players scored in double figures, including Bradley Beal with 16.

Dewayne Dedmon led Atlanta with 24 points on the holiday celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. and in the city where the civil rights leader was born.

              • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

                — Rutgers 76, Nebraska 67— Damaging loss for the Cornhuskers.

                — Creighton 91, Georgetown 87— Very fun game to watch; refs weren’t calling flops!!!

                — Kansas 80, Iowa State 76— Remind me in March that Iowa State is really good.

                — Warriors 130, Lakers 111— Klay Thompson made his first ten 3-pointers.

                — Nine of 11 NBA games Monday were decided by 10+ points.

                — Has a former QB ever been an NFL defensive coordinator? Would make some sense.

                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                13) Football players are really tough; Saints’ OT Andrus Peat played the last two weeks with a broken hand that he had operated on during the Saints’ bye week two weeks ago. Imagine a guy having to block Aaron Donald all day with a broken hand? Can’t be much fun.

                12) One of the best parts of Super Bowl week is when the Westgate SuperBook puts out its prop bets for the game- last year, it was a 42-page PDF document. You can get into a lot of trouble with a document that is filled with 42 pages of wagering opportunities.

                11) There are rumors that former Seahawks’ QB Jon Kitna will become the QB coach for the Cowboys; right now, he is offensive coordinator for the San Diego Fleet of the new AAF, where his boss is former Rams’ coach Mike Martz.

The AAF starts play on February 9, the Saturday after the Super Bowl.

                10) Cincinnati Reds got P’s Sonny Gray, Reiver Sanmartin from Bronx in exchange for IF Shed Long and the Reds’ 2019 Competitive Balance Round A draft pick. Gray signed a contract thru the 2022 season; Gray will enjoy not facing the DH, but Cincinnati does have a small ballpark- over last five years, it ranks #11 out of 30 major league fields as a hitters’ ballpark.

                9) This is a good time to remind everyone that for whatever reason, Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft once met Vladimir Putin; during the meeting, as the story goes, Kraft takes off his Super Bowl ring and shows it to Putin, who stuck the ring in his pocket and walked away.

That ring is still in Russia; Kraft appealed to the Obama administration, but was told to let it go. Why would Kraft be meeting Putin in the first place?

                8) NFL announced their international games for next season:

                Mexico City: Chiefs-Chargers
                England: Panthers-Buccaneers, Bears-Raiders
                Rams-Bengals, Texans-Jaguars

                7) Danny the Glover checked in to let us know that this is the first time the same two cities have been opponents in the World Series/Super Bowl in same season since 1969, when Mets-Orioles met in the World Series, and Jets-Colts played in the Super Bowl.

                6) How bad do you have to be in order to be a home underdog to the Chicago Bulls? Bulls came into Monday’s game on a 9-game losing streak, but beat Cleveland 104-88 as a 2-point road favorite. It was the first time the Bulls were favored anywhere since November 21.

                5) NBA math; Houston Rockets are trading Carmelo Anthony (actually, his contract) and cash to Chicago but he’ll never play for the Bulls. Chicago will release him and he’ll be a free agent, if/when he clears waivers.

                4) I’ll say this about NFL officiating: Seems like there are lot fewer penalties called in playoff games than during the regular season- they should call fewer penalties all the time.

                3) Watching the Australian Open tennis tournament, they have a camera in the net at Rod Laver Arena, which gives them some cool replays. Kind of like the camera in the pylon by the goal line at football games, whoever decided that was a good idea deserves a raise.

                2) From Mike Teevan: Tom Brady was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 baseball draft; Jared Goff’s dad Jerry was a major league catcher for six years; he played 55 games for the Expos, in 1990, 92.

                1) Adam Long is a 31-year old golf journeyman who was making only his 6th PGA Tour start when he won the Desert Classic this past weekend, beating Phil Mickelson, Adam Hadwin by a stroke.

Getting your first PGA Tour win is a life-changing event; Long won $1,062,000 and now has a two-year exemption on the Tour. Huge day in his career.

                    Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Blazers at Thunder – 8:05 PM EST

The Northwest division has proven to be the toughest from top to bottom in the league this season. The two teams sitting tied for second place behind Denver meet tonight in Oklahoma City as both play without rest. The Thunder (28-18 SU, 25-21 ATS) return home after pounding the hapless Knicks on Monday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, 127-109 as nine-point favorites. OKC shot over 60% from the floor in the first half, while Paul George paced the Thunder with 31 points to continue a career season in which he is averaging 26.8 points per game.

The Blazers (29-19 SU, 26-22 ATS) face another tough road task inside the Northwest tonight after rallying past the Jazz on Monday, 109-104. Portland erased a seven-point halftime deficit by outscoring Utah, 39-28 in the third quarter, while beating the Jazz for the first time in three matchups this season. Damian Lillard burned the Jazz for 26 points, while Portland limited Utah to 40% shooting from the floor to pick up their third consecutive victory.

Both teams own winning records playing the second of a back-to-back this season as the Blazers are 4-3 SU/ATS, while the Thunder have compiled a 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS mark in this situation. Portland swept the four-game season series from Oklahoma City in 2017-18, but the Thunder captured the first meeting this season at the Moda Center, 111-109 as a one-point underdog earlier this month. George and Russell Westbrook combined to score 68 points to end an eight-game skid in Portland dating back to October 2014.

Oklahoma City begins a three-game homestand, which includes visits from New Orleans on Thursday and Milwaukee on Sunday. The Thunder are riding a 6-1 OVER run the last seven games overall, while hitting the OVER in six of the past seven home contests. Portland has cashed in nine of the previous 12 games, which includes a 4-1 ATS record in the last five road affairs.

                    Crown Concerns

The Kings (24-23 SU, 27-20 ATS) continue a six-game homestand tonight after getting routed by the Nets on Monday, 123-94. Sacramento was held to nine points in the fourth quarter, while hitting the UNDER for the eighth consecutive game. The Kings have scored less than 100 points twice on this road trip, as Sacramento has lost six of the past seven games away from Golden 1 Center dating back to mid-December.

Sacramento heads north of the border to Toronto trying to improve on a 3-6 SU and 2-7 ATS record with no rest. The Raptors (35-13 SU, 21-27 ATS) moved to 20-4 at Scotiabank Arena following Saturday’s 119-90 blowout of the Grizzlies as 10 ½-point favorites. Toronto ended a three-game ATS slide by putting together a monstrous third quarter effort as the Raptors outscored the Grizzlies, 45-14 to take a 38-point lead. Danny Green drilled eight three-pointers for Toronto, who played the second straight game without leading scorer Kawhi Leonard, who is expected to return to the lineup tonight.

The Kings beat the Raptors four consecutive times from November 2015 through November 2016, but Toronto has won each of the past three matchups. When these teams hooked up in Sacramento back in November, the Raptors held off the Kings, 114-105 to barely cash as 8 ½-point favorites. The Raptors outrebounded the Kings, 53-31 in the win, while Leonard and Serge Ibaka each posted double-doubles in the victory.

                    Texas Two-Step?

The Clippers (25-21 SU, 25-21 ATS) suffered through a miserable homestand by going 0-4, which included back-to-back blowout losses to the Jazz and Warriors. Los Angeles snapped a five-game skid in Sunday’s 103-95 triumph at San Antonio as 9 ½-point underdogs, while limiting a team to less than 100 points in a road win for the first time since early November at Orlando. The Clippers beat the Spurs for the first time in three meetings, as L.A. hit the UNDER for the eighth time in the past 10 games.

Los Angeles remains in the Lone Star State tonight for a meeting in Dallas with the struggling Mavericks (20-26 SU, 27-19 ATS). Dallas dropped to a miserable 4-20 on the highway following a pair of losses at Indiana and Milwaukee, but the Mavs managed a cover as 11-point underdogs in Monday’s 116-106 setback to the Bucks. Playing without rest has not been a situation to support Rick Carlisle’s squad, as the Mavericks have compiled an 0-7 SU and 3-4 ATS mark on the second of a back-to-back this season.

The Mavs are significantly better at home than on road, as Dallas owns a solid 16-6 mark at American Airlines Center. However, Dallas has lost three of the past four at home, including recent close defeats to San Antonio and Golden State. The home team has captured the first two meetings this season, while both contests finished OVER the total. The Clippers are seeking their first victory in Dallas since November 2016 as the home squad has won each of the past seven meetings.

                    Let’s Do It Again

The Timberwolves and Suns are hooking up for the second time in three days as the teams shift out to Phoenix tonight. In Sunday’s contest at the Target Center, Minnesota (22-24 SU, 23-23 ATS) rallied for a 116-114 triumph, but the Wolves failed to cash as 12-point favorites. Derrick Rose came off the bench to pace the Wolves with 31 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns scored 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Minnesota was aided by hitting 32 free throws.

Phoenix (11-37 SU, 22-26 ATS) is back at home after going winless on its four-game road swing, as the Suns are 8-2 ATS in the past 10 away contests. The Suns had dropped six consecutive home games from December 28 through January 6, but Phoenix is fresh off back-to-back home underdog wins over Sacramento and Denver.

These teams are meeting for the third time this season as the Suns took care of the Wolves in the first matchup in the Valley in mid-December, 107-99 as 7 ½-point underdogs. This is the 13th time this season that two teams are playing a home-and-home set, as our industry friends at VSIN note that clubs losing the first matchup are 10-2 SU and 9-3 ATS in the second affair.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Paul George had 36 points and eight rebounds, Russell Westbrook had a triple-double of 29 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Portland Trail Blazers 123-114 on Tuesday night.

Steven Adams and Terrance Ferguson each added 14 points for Oklahoma City, which snapped a three-game losing streak to Portland at Chesapeake Energy Arena. After a stretch of losing five of six games, the Thunder have won three straight and moved back into third place in the fluid Western Conference standings.

Damian Lillard had 34 points and eight assists, and C.J. McCollum scored 31 for Portland, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Jusuf Nurkic had 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Except for McCollum, who went 7 of 12 from 3-point range, the Trail Blazers struggled from behind the arc, going 10 for 36. Oklahoma City hit 11 of 23 3-point attempts.

                          RAPTORS 120, KINGS 105

TORONTO (AP) - Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet each scored 19 points, Pascal Siakam had 18 and Toronto beat Sacramento.

Serge Ibaka had 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Raptors extended their home winning streak to 10 games. Toronto's franchise record for consecutive home wins is 12.

C.J. Miles scored a season-high 15 points and Norm Powell added 11 as Toronto overcame the absence of Kawhi Leonard (rest) to win for the eighth time in nine games.

Leonard missed his third straight game for rest and will also skip Wednesday's game at Indiana. He is expected to return Friday at Houston.

Kings rookie Marvin Bagley scored a career-high 22 points and added 11 rebounds in his first career start. Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 16 points and Brady Hield had 15 as Sacramento lost for the third time in four games.

                          TIMBERWOLVES 118, SUNS 91

PHOENIX (AP) - Karl-Anthony-Towns had 25 points, 18 rebounds and seven assists and Minnesota took an early lead and rolled past short-handed Phoenix.

Josh Okogie added a career-high 21 points for the Timberwolves, who beat the Suns for the second time in a row, following a 116-114 win in Minneapolis on Sunday.

In both games, Phoenix was without centers Deandre Ayton (left ankle sprain) and Richaun Holmes (right foot sprain).

Devin Booker scored 14 for Phoenix before he and Minnesota's Gorgui Deng were ejected with 5:24 left in the third quarter. Phoenix already trailed by 20 by then.

Josh Jackson had a season-high 27 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix, which lost its fifth straight. Kelly Oubre Jr. added 13 and Dragan Bender, who started at center, had 12 points and 10 boards.

Andrew Wiggins scored 17 and Jared Bayless 14 for Minnesota.

                          MAVERICKS 106, CLIPPERS 98

DALLAS (AP) - Dennis Smith Jr. had 17 points and eight rebounds in his return after a week away from the team amid trade talk, and Dallas beat Los Angeles.

Smith had two of his four assists on a layup and alley-oop dunk in the fourth quarter for DeAndre Jordan, who had 13 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks.

Rookie sensation Luka Doncic matched Smith with 17 points. Harrison Barnes led Dallas with 20 points.

Patrick Beverley scored 16 points while Avery Bradley and Lou Williams had 15 apiece for the Clippers, who lost for the sixth time in seven games.

                              Tweet of the Day

“Honestly, the front office pushes who they want to get the ball to. I haven’t been a huge priority in that regard. Maybe that will change but I’m not sure. More balls come my way in 2-minute drill where nothing is planned.”
Dallas Cowboys’ WR Cole Beasley, complaining about the Dallas offense

                              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                              13) Glad to see Edgar Martinez get elected to the baseball Hall of Fame Tuesday; he joins Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay and Mike Mussina as new inductees, with Rivera the first guy to get elected unanimously to the Hall.

I have no problem with Rivera being voted in unanimously; I have a HUGE problem with none of THESE great players being voted in unanimously:

Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Ken Griffey Jr, Johnny Bench, George Brett, Bob Gibson, Mike Schmidt, among others. Who would vote against any of them?

If Hank Aaron or Willie Mays wasn’t voted in unanimously, why should Rivera be? Doesn’t really matter, but if Rivera had the exact same career for the Padres or Mariners, no way is he a unanimous selection.

                              12) Atlanta Braves re-signed OF Nick Markakis to a one-year deal. Markakis made the All-Star Game for the first time LY at age 34; he hit only .258 after the All-Star break, after hitting .323 prior to the mid-summer classic.

                              11) Vanderbilt freshman PG Darius Garland is out for the year with an injury; he left school and will prepare for the NBA Draft, not surprising. I’m pretty adamant that kids should be able to go right from high school to the NBA; going to college for a year is a farce.

Garland scored 16.2 ppg in five games for the Commodores, before he got hurt.

                              10) Speaking of freshman guards, how is it that Russell Westbrook played only 9 minutes a game as a freshman at UCLA? He was a dominant figure the next year, then bolted to the NBA, where he’s become a big star, but he scored only 122 points in 36 games in 2006-07.

                              9) Kentucky 76, Mississippi State 55— Someone on the MSU staff checked off a wrong starter in the scorebook, so the Bulldogs’ point guard didn’t start the game- Miss State led 4-0 early, so it wasn’t a disaster, just a little embarrassing.

Flashback to December, 1981: I was the student manager at UAlbany, and part of my job was to fill out the names in the scorebook. We had a player quit the team, and the next day I mistakenly put his name in the book, omitting someone else’s name, although I had the omitted player’s number written in the book.

As luck would have it, the omitted player has the best game of his career, but the PA guy kept announcing the name of the player who had quit; not good for me, when they discovered the mistake. The ref saved my butt by not accessing a technical, since the number was correct, but we lost the game, and I was in the doghouse for a while.

                              8) Looking at game experience in college basketball, out of 32 D-I leagues in the country, the A-14 and Pac-12 are the two leagues whose players have the least actual game experience.

                              7) Part of the reason that Cincinnati traded for Sonny Gray is that he is close with Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson, who was his pitching coach in college at Vanderbilt.

                              6) Arizona Diamondbacks will have four of the first 34 picks in the 2019 draft if AJ Pollock signs with another team for more than $50M, which is expected to happen.

                              5) 76ers 121, Rockets 93— Over/under for James Harden’s scoring in this game Monday night was 41.5; he had 37 thru three quarters, but sat the 4th quarter out because the Rockets were getting killed.

                              4) Something to think about in March/April: Cleveland Browns have more than $80M in salary cap space to use; they have eight picks in the first five rounds of the 2019 draft.

                              3) Different ways to skin a cat, from Rufus Peabody: This season, NFL teams went for it 62% of time on 4th and less than 2 in enemy territory. Rams went for it only 6-of-19 times. Eagles, who make much more analytically-driven decisions, went for it 15-of-18 times.

                              2) NFL defensive line prospect Rashan Gary is the founder and CEO of his own sports agency; his mother is the president of the five-person agency- certified agent Ian Clarke will negotiate Gary’s NFL contract, but as an employee of Gary’s agency, instead of getting a percentage.

Gary played college ball at Michigan, is expected to be a top-10 pick in April’s draft.

There is an old saying, “A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client,” but Gary isn’t a lawyer, he will be the boss of the lawyer who represents him. Innovative idea.

                              1) Kansas City Chiefs fired defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, making him the scapegoat for the Chiefs’ loss to New England Sunday night.

Social media wasn’t kind to Sutton on his way out of town. Couple of people suggested that CBS analyst Tony Romo dictating everything New England was going to do before they did it, didn’t help Sutton’s situation any.
