  • Antetokounmpo has 32, Bucks beat Celtics 123-116 in Game 3
    May 3, 2019
    ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

BOSTON (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo kept attacking and the Boston Celtics kept fouling.

The fouls may have slowed the second half of Game 3, but nothing could stop Antetokounmpo from putting together a signature performance in TD Garden.

Antetokounmpo had 32 points and 13 rebounds, George Hill finished with 21 points and the Milwaukee Bucks beat Boston 123-116 on Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

    Khris Middleton added 20 points.

Antetokounmpo had only 13 field goal attempts but had 16 points from the free throw line in a game that featured 53 total fouls called - 39 in the second half. Including Milwaukee's two regular-season games in Boston, Antetokounmpo has scored 30 or more points in each of his trips to TD Garden in 2018-19.

''I'm just gonna keep being aggressive. That's what my teammates want me to do,'' Antetokounmpo said. ''If I have to take it all the way, I'll take it all the way.''

Kyrie Irving scored 29 points and Jayson Tatum had 20 for the Celtics, who host Game 4 on Monday.

Boston led by a point at the half but was outscored 40-31 in the third quarter and trailed by as many as 17 points in the final period.

The Celtics were also outscored 52-24 in the paint and had 18 turnovers leading to 28 Milwaukee points.

Irving acknowledged the fouls did slow down the game and stunt Boston's efforts late.

''It's getting ridiculous at this point,'' Irving said, using an expletive to describe the lulls the fouls created.

The Bucks threw the Celtics a tactical curveball in Game 2, inserting Nikola Mirotic into the starting lineup in place of Sterling Brown.

In Game 3 it was Celtics coach Brad Stevens who brought new wrinkles, notably going with a small lineup that featured 6-foot-7 Semi Ojeleye guarding the 6-11 Antetokounmpo when he returned to the game at the start of the second quarter and again in the third quarter.

Boston also kept going at Antetokounmpo throughout the game when it had the ball. It included a one-handed dunk by Jaylen Brown over the Bucks' star early in the third quarter that brought the Celtics fans inside TD Garden to their feet. It was reminiscent of a two-handed dunk he had over Antetokounmpo in Boston's Game 1 win.

Friday's version complemented several nice defensive plays by Brown, including blocking a Tony Snell layup attempt off the backboard.

Still, Milwaukee managed to keep racking up points in the paint. The Bucks led by as many as 12 in the third quarter and took a 95-87 lead into the fourth.

That was the score when Brown was called for his fifth foul with 10:53 left on what appeared to be a light touch of Eric Bledsoe near the baseline. It brought animated protests from both Brown and Stevens. A few trips later, Tatum received a technical for protesting his foul of Antetokounmpo.

Stevens said he didn't think his team was overly frustrated by the foul calls.

''I just think ultimately they made a lot of plays in that quarter and we didn't,'' he said.

The Bucks started to rack up points at the line and their lead grew to 114-97 by the time Brown came back into the game with 4:53 remaining.

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said Antetokounmpo is hard to stop when he's this locked in to finding ways to score and get his teammates involved.

''He's just such a force. He can get through cracks,'' Budenholzer said. ''He's going to finish or get to the free throw line a lot if he keeps playing like this.''

    TIP-INS

Bucks: Finished 15 of 37 from the 3-point line.

Celtics: Finished 30 of 32 from the free throw line

    HONORING HONDO

The Celtics players wore black warmup T-shirts adorned with a green No. 17 to honor Hall of Famer John Havlicek, who died last week at age 79 after a short battle with Parkinson's disease.

The team also observed a moment of silence for him prior to tipoff. Later after the game's first timeout, a highlight video was shown on the jumbotron. It ended with a spotlight being shined on his retired No. 17 banner hanging in the rafters.

Voted one of the NBA's 50 greatest players, Havlicek won eight titles with Boston and his steal of Hal Greer's inbounds pass helped the Celtics hold off Philadelphia in the 1965 Eastern Conference final.

    HOMETOWN KID

The Bucks' bench outscored Boston's 42-16, with Hill and Pat Connaughton (14) leading the way.

Connaughton, who grew up as a Celtics fan in nearby Arlington, had a large rooting section of friends and family in the crowd. But he said there was no special meaning to helping Milwaukee beat his hometown team in a playoff game.

''Hopefully, in a few more weeks, I'll be able to look back and say it was pretty cool, growing up six miles away, winning a game at the TD Garden,'' said Connaughton, who also had seven rebounds and two steals.

          **************************

          Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

          13) A 14-year old kid named Yang Kuang played in the European Tour event in China this week; he made the cut by a stroke, making a 15-foot putt on the last hole to finish the two days -1.

They show the kid get up and down from the bunker; he isn’t very big, but what a future he has, to be able to hold his own against pros when he is just starting high school.

          12) So I’m having lunch at Denny’s Friday, and the couple in the next booth is having a fairly big argument; they’re newlyweds, and the Mrs is “stressed out”, but they can’t agree on why she is stressed out, which stresses her out even further. Neither person is happy.

This goes on for a while, then they mercifully ask for the check, take their argument elsewhere. Hopefully they have a comfortable couch in their home, seeing how the Mr figured to be sleeping there Friday night. Oy.

          11) The dictionary defines “scapegoat” this way:

“a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.”

Or in the case of the Washington Nationals, pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, who got told to take a hike Thursday after Washington stumbled to a 13-17 start.

Not his fault Bryce Harper signed in Philly.

          10) Braves 7, Marlins 2— Last year, when Ronald Acuna was batting leadoff and hitting lot of homers, Jose Urena of Miami drilled him with the first pitch of a game and got tossed. Lot of words were exchanged since then. This game was the first time since then that Urena faced Atlanta.

Bottom of 2nd inning, Urena comes to bat and the first pitch is behind him, which wasn’t very subtle- Urena actually did a good job to avoid the pitch. Home plate ump immediately tosses Braves’ P Kevin Gausman out of the game, which didn’t go over well with the Atlanta dugout.

          9) You know the home team is pretty sad when their TV people send the roving reporter out to promote the stadium’s concession stands in the 2nd inning, and during her report, there is no one else in the shot. No one. Zero. Bupkis.

Marlins’ home games are like the old joke, that if you’re an escaped convict, that would be a good place to hide out, since no one would think to look for anyone there.

          8) With more strikeouts/home runs in baseball, that means fewer balls in play; does that lead to teams play worse fielders, since they’re going to get less action?

Milwaukee is playing Mike Moustakas at 2B, Travis Shaw at 3B; I’m guessing they have to have a 2B with better range than Moustakas somewhere in their system.

          7) NFL and FOX agreed to fewer, but longer commercial breaks during next year’s Super Bowl. Four commercial breaks per quarter instead of five, with each running for 2.5 minutes instead of two minutes. Overall, same amount of commercials will be shown.

          6) Detroit Lions’ trainer quit this week, to pursue “other opportunities”; the guy had spent 25 years in the NFL, the last five in Detroit. He was replaced by somebody from U of Michigan, who had previously spent time with the Patriots, Giants. Go figure. Matt Patricia spent a long time with the Patriots.

I may be a conspiracy theorist here, but guys don’t quit jobs like that, not when they’ve spent 25 years in the league. New head coach comes in, and after one season the trainer “quits”. It will read that he jumped ship, but the suspicion here is that he got pushed.

          5) Hope for New Jersey Jets’ fans this season:

Since 2000, Jets head coaches, 1st year and then after……

2000 Al Groh First year: 9-7 Only lasted one year
2001 Herm Edwards: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 29-35
2006: Eric Mangini: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 13-19
2008: Rex Ryan: First year: 9-7 Rest of time: 37-43
2015: Todd Bowles: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 14-33
2019 will be Adam Gase’s first year as Jets’ coach.

          4) Cincinnati Reds scored total of nine runs in Tyler Mahle’s first six starts, which explains why they lost five of those games. Mahle is 0-4, 4.09 with a 1.30 WHIP; he hasn’t been terrible, just hasn’t gotten any support whatsoever.

          3) Cubs 4, Cardinals 0– Kyle Hendricks threw an 81-pitch complete game, the fewest pitches in a complete game since Aaron Cook in 2012.

          2) Giants 12, Reds 11 (11)— Cincinnati led 8-0 in 3rd inning, 11-7 in 8th inning but lost, day after splitting pair of 1-0 games in New York. Stephen Vogt went 3-3 with three runs scored for SF, in a game he didn’t enter until the fifth inning.

          1) The governor of Montana signed a sports betting bill this week, the first state this year to pass a sports betting bill. Tennessee will also have sports betting soon; governors in Iowa, Indiana have similar bills on their desks.

Montana expects to have their system up for the NFL season.

              • Saturday's Playoff Tips
                Chris David

Western Conference Semifinals – Game 3 (Warriors lead 2-0)

Golden State at Houston (ABC, 8:35 p.m. ET)

Many pundits believed that this could be the year that the Rockets finally get over the hump and defeat the Warriors. After back-to-back wins by Golden State at home, Houston faces a 0-2 hole and knows that Saturday’s Game 3 at the Toyota Center is a must-win situation.

After losing a tightly contested 104-100 decision in Game 1 on Saturday, the Rockets came out flat on Tuesday and suffered a 115-109 setback in Game 2.

NBA expert Tony Mejia believes Chris Paul and James Harden have to find the right balance to keep the Warriors from getting too comfortable on the defensive end since isolations can make Houston easier to guard and can lead to stagnant play due to lack of ball movement.

“In attempting to get Harden going, Houston hasn’t done Paul any favors in terms of helping him find a rhythm as a shooter or playmaker. The All-Star point guard who was brought in to take some of the pressure off Harden in order to keep him fresher, but he’s shooting 27 percent from 3-point range this postseason (11-for-41) while averaging just six assists and 4.7 turnovers per game. Even if Harden wasn’t dealing with an eye issue, he’d need more help than he’s been getting. It might be time for Mike D’Antoni to let Paul run the offense and let Harden play decoy since it might help other Rockets get going at home. The first quarter will be telling, especially with Clint Capela expected to remain in the lineup despite being such a liability in Oakland against the “Hamptons Five” that Steve Kerr is riding as his primary group. We might see Danuel House and Austin Rivers replace Capela if the Rockets look to match up by going small, which could lead to even more 3-pointers flying, so keep that in mind for totals purposes.”

The eye issues for Harden aren’t expected to be an issue at least that’s what the oddsmakers believe. After catching +6 and +5 in two games at Golden State, the Rockets are listed as -3 ½-point home favorites for Game 3.

The nine-point swing from Oakland to Houston certainly opened up my eyes and going back to the 2015 NBA Playoffs, the Rockets haven’t been favored by more than 2 ½-points over the Warriors in their last three postseason matchups. Is the line telling us that Houston’s the play?

Houston went 31-10 in the regular season in front of their fans and 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs against Utah. For our purposes, Houston has gone 25-17-2 against the spread and that includes a 2-1 mark in the postseason versus the Jazz.

Despite being the reigning two-time defending champions, Golden State was an underdog seven times this season and it went 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS. The Warriors did close the season with three consecutive wins and four straight covers in this role.

Golden State went 3-0 on the road in the first round against the Clippers while covering two of those games. In the first meeting (Game 3) at the Staples Center, the Warriors put on a display and captured a 27-point win (132-105) while taking the crowd out of the game quickly.

Was it a coincidence or a trend? Kevin Rogers of VegasInsider.com dug up a solid nugget on Golden State and he answered that question for us.

He said, “The Warriors have fared well in Game 3’s of a playoff series since 2017, compiling an 8-1 record both SU and ATS. That includes a 7-1 SU and ATS record away from Oracle Arena. The only defeat in this stretch came at New Orleans last season in the second round, 119-100 as five-point favorites. In three Game 3’s against Houston in the postseason dating back to 2015, the Warriors are 2-1 both SU and ATS, including a 115-80 rout of the Rockets in the 2015 conference finals as a short underdog. Houston and Golden State have split eight playoff games at Toyota Center since 2015, while the underdog has covered five times.”

After watching Game 1 easily go ‘under’ (224), bettors chasing the ‘over’ in Game 2 (222) caught a big break with a 67-point fourth quarter and 27 of those were posted in the final three minutes. Total players have certainly seen that movie before and the opening number of 222 for Game 3 has held steady as of Saturday morning.

Houston watched the ‘under’ go 2-0-1 at home in the first round versus the Jazz and those results could be overlooked since Utah (93.6 PPG) couldn’t buy a shot on the road. In last year’s Western Conference Finals versus the Warriors, the ‘under’ went 3-1 in the four games. Houston averaged 119.5 points per game in its two wins but just 99 PPG in the losses. Golden State has watched the ‘under’ go 9-3 in its last 12 road playoff games.

It’s rare to see teams get three days off in the middle of a playoff series and Houston actually struggled in these spots this season. The Rockets went 1-2 when playing on three plus days of rest and the offense only averaged 105.7 points per game. Meanwhile, the Warriors were 2-0 in these situations and they averaged a blistering 133 PPG.

Sticking with other trends, Houston owned an 11-5 record on Saturday this season while Golden State was 9-4. For those of you following the NBA this season, you’re probably aware of ABC’s primetime coverage on Saturday. They had eight nationally televised games and Houston and Golden State were a participant in seven of them. The Rockets went 2-1 while the Warriors went 4-1 and the loss came on Feb. 23 at home to the Rockets (118-112). The ‘under’ cashed in that game and the low side was 6-1 in the seven contests involving the pair.

Considering Golden State can essentially end Houston’s hopes with a victory, VI’s Mejia believes it’s worth thinking ahead entering such a defining game.

“The Warriors can really send a message with a victory here since it would put the Rockets in a massive hole while dispelling all talk of the two-time defending champs being vulnerable. The series price opened at -225 and is now at -700, so the only series future bet worth making would be to take a shot at the Rockets +500 if you believe they’re capable of getting back in the series by winning on Saturday night,” Mejia said. “There’s no way Golden State is losing four straight games, so this might be the spot to get in on the Dubs as the West champ at -400 or NBA champ at -200 considering Houston really appeared to be its biggest threat in preventing their threepeat bid. It’s hard to imagine Denver or Portland pulling off an upset in the conference finals, while the East representative will have walked through some serious flames in reaching June before encountering their biggest challenge.”

Mejia added, “The current futures at Westgate involving the Warriors winning the West and the NBA title are the same as they were entering the playoffs, and I can’t imagine you’re going to find better odds going forward if Golden State prevails here and you already failed to get in just after the lost Game 5 at home against the Clippers.”

The pair will meet again from Houston on Monday in Game 4.

NBA Game 3 Preview - Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets

If the Houston Rockets plan on giving the Golden State Warriors a run for their money in the Western Conference Semifinals, they better start now. The Warriors have a 2-0 lead as the series shifts to Houston, where the Rockets are in a must-win position.

Houston is the favorite to capture this matchup and claw back into the series, but the spread isn’t huge. Golden State has the talent to win either at home or on the road and would love to put a vice grip on this series with another victory.

The stakes don’t get too much bigger than this, as the Rockets have been looking forward to this playoff rematch for a year and don’t want to go out meekly. Houston will have a raucous home crowd behind it, which could help tilt this game in its favor in NBA odds.

This NBA basketball game between the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas at 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 4th, 2019. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.

We'll have NBA basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2019 NBA season.

                  Odds Analysis

The Rockets were the underdogs in the first two games of this series but have been listed as the 3.5-point favorite to claim Game 3. Houston has its back against the wall and is the -168 favorite to emerge victorious on the moneyline, with Golden State listed at +147 to pull the mini upset. The scoring total is listed at 219.5 points.

The “over” hit last time out because of some late free throws, while the Warriors barely covered in NBA betting lines.

                  Last Time Out

Kevin Durant scored 29 points to lead a balanced effort as the Warriors took an early nine-point lead and then held off the Rockets the rest of the way for the 115-109 win. The game was close throughout but Houston was never quite able to get over the hump, as Durant and the rest of the elite scorers for Golden State made big shot after big shot.

The Warriors shot 46.2 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range. Stephen Curry added 20 points and five assists while Klay Thompson had 21 points and played great defense. Rockets star James Harden had 29 points, six rebounds and four assists. Austin Rivers had a nice showing off the bench for the Rockets, scoring 14 points in 24 minutes.

                  Injury Report

Harden got his eye scratched early in Game 2 and it clearly affected him the rest of the way as the MVP candidate was squinting and wiping it throughout. Harden went to an eye doctor when the team arrived back in Houston, according to ESPN, but he is not expected to be affected by any vision problems in Game 3.

Harden was hesitant to shoot from the outside at times in Game 2 after the injury and it’s integral that he is full strength in this one. Curry suffered a dislocated finger early in Game 2 as well but he returned to the game with tape on it and didn’t seem too affected.

Keep an eye on the status of these two superstars because any issues during Game 3 would be a huge development.

The Rockets aren’t good enough to win this series, but they will put everything into winning Game 3 and will be able to do so. Houston should also be able to cover the spread as the margin of victory in this one may be a slight surprise.

Harden hasn’t been hitting on all cylinders yet in this series but look for him to have a solid performance and he will get help from Rivers, Chris Paul and Eric Gordon in NBA gambling.

NBA ATS Pick: Houston Rockets 117, Golden State Warriors 109

                  • Harden scores 41 as Rockets outlast Warriors 126-121 in OT
                    May 4, 2019

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden made a big 3-pointer in overtime and scored 41 points, and the Houston Rockets outlasted the Golden State Warriors 126-121 on Saturday night to cut the deficit in the Western Conference semifinals to 2-1.

A layup by P.J. Tucker put Houston up by three with about 2 minutes left and the Warriors missed shots on their next two possessions. That set up the 3-pointer by Harden with 49 seconds left that made it 124-118.

Kevin Durant made three free throws after that, but Harden added a layup to stretch the lead. Stephen Curry, who dislocated a finger in Game 2, missed a wide-open layup and Harden grabbed the rebound to secure Houston's victory.

The Rockets withstood a 46-point performance from Durant and late surge by the Warriors to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole in the best-of-seven series.

Game 4 is Monday night in Houston.

Harden led the team despite recovering from injuries to both eyes he sustained in Game 2 when he was hit in the face by Draymond Green. He was feeling better on Saturday, but both eyes remained bloody red in spots.

''That's James. That's what he does,'' Houston coach Mike D'Antoni said.

Eric Gordon added a playoff career-high 30 points with a playoff-best seven 3-pointers for Houston.

''We got outplayed. I thought Houston played really well. They deserved to win,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.

Curry finished with 17 points on 7-for-23 shooting after missing two layups in overtime. Green added 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Warriors.

Houston was clinging to a one-point lead when Iguodala's 3-pointer put Golden State up 112-110 with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth. Harden made two free throws a few seconds after that to tie it and Durant missed a jump shot on the other end to give Houston a chance to win it in regulation.

Chris Paul was in the lane when Klay Thompson forced a jump ball. Harden got the ball but didn't have time to get a shot off before the buzzer to send it to overtime.

A dunk by Durant cut Houston's lead to one midway through the fourth quarter, but Austin Rivers hit a 3-pointer for Houston soon after that to leave the Rockets up 108-104.

The Warriors regained the lead with about 3 1/2 minutes to go after five straight points by Thompson made it 109-108. But Paul put Houston back on top with two free throws soon after that.

The Warriors used a 15-2 run at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth to take a 94-93 lead with about 10 minutes remaining. Durant was unstoppable in that stretch, scoring all 10 of Golden State's points to start the fourth.

Tucker, Houston's defensive stopper who had been on the bench with four fouls, re-entered the game to try and help slow Durant down.

Durant cooled off after that, but Iguodala and Thompson both made 3-pointers soon after that and the Warriors remained up by a point with about eight minutes left in the fourth.

The Rockets were up by nine at halftime, and Harden and Paul made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions in the third to push the lead to 72-61.

A 3-pointer by Curry cut Houston's lead to seven later in the period before Houston used an 8-2 spurt to extend it to 83-70 with about 3 minutes left in the quarter.

Houston had a 12-point lead after a dunk by Clint Capela with less than a minute left in the third. Golden State scored the last five points of the quarter, with a 3 from Green, to get within 91-84 entering the fourth.

Houston got out to a much better start on Saturday night after being outscored 57-39 in the opening quarter of the first two games and the Rockets only trailed by one entering the second.

They used a 33-point second quarter, powered by 13 points from Gordon, to take a 58-49 lead into halftime.

                          13) Rockets 126, Warriors 121 OT— Houston’s bench was +29 in 62:00; starting guards Harden/Gordon were 12-27 on the arc, combined for 71 points. Rockets were +20 on the boards.

Durant scored 46 in a losing cause; Curry was 7-23 from floor. Golden State’s bench took a total of six shots the whole game. Warriors still lead series, 2-1.

                          12) Portland 140, Denver 137, 4OT’s (Friday night)

                          — Will Barton scored 22 points for Denver; he didn’t score in the first half.
                          — Nikola Jokic played 65:00, the most ever by a 7-footer in a playoff game.
                          — Kanter played 56:00, Lillard 58:00, McCollum 60:00 for Portland.
                          — Portland was 24-28 on the foul line; Denver 14-20.
                          — Denver’s bench was -21 in 84:00; Portland’s was -2 in 75:00.
                          — Rodney Hood’s 3-pointer with 0:17.8 left was the game-winner.
                          — Game 4 is Sunday night, fairly quick turnaround in the playoffs.

                          11) Miami Marlins fired president of business operations Chip Bowers this week, because it is his fault that Derek Jeter is doing a cruddy job running the franchise.

No one goes to the games, because the team is dreadful; not that many people went when they had the best outfield in baseball (Jeter traded them all away).

                          10) Friday night in Cincinnati, Giants trailed 8-0 after three innings; from 1957 to 2018, teams trailing by exactly eight runs entering the 4th inning were 6-412.

Giants won 12-11 in 11 innings, so make that 7-412.

                          9) Dodgers 7, Padres 6— LA wins for second night in a row in last inning; since the start of the 2011 season, Dodgers are 101-51 against San Diego.

                          8) Brewers 4, Mets 3 (18)— Mets scored a run in top of 18th, then they walked three batters in row in bottom of 18th, and Ryan Braun’s 6th hit of the game sent the locals home happy.

                          7) Baseball stuff:
                          — New York put P James Paxton (knee) on the IL.
                          — Pirates put P Jameson Taillon (elbow) on IL.
                          — Nationals put OF Juan Soto (back) on IL.
                          — Reds cut OF Matt Kemp, ate $15.5M in salary they owe him.
                          — Phillies DFA’d OF Aaron Altherr.

                          6) From Elias: Colorado’s Tyler Anderson is the first pitcher in 100+ years to give up 5+ earned runs while pitching five or fewer innings in each of his first five starts of the season. He also got sent to AAA Saturday.

                          5) Good news/bad news week for Monty Williams:
Good news: He got hired this week as head coach of the Phoenix Suns.

Bad news: Phoenix Suns are owned by Robert Sarver, a meddling owner whose team has made the playoffs once in 11 years (2010) since they stupidly let Mike D’Antoni leave town.

                          4) Chicago Bears had eight kickers in for tryouts this week; at the end of practice, with the whole team watching, each kicker tried a 43-yard FG, the length of the FG Chicago missed in their loss to the Eagles in the playoffs in January.

The eight kickers combined to go 2-8 on their FG tries. No bueno.

                          3) NBA shooters get fouled on only 1.66% of their 3-point shots; James Harden gets fouled on 11.5% of his 3-point shots. Big difference.

                          2) Red Sox 15, White Sox 2— Boston had 10 consecutive hits in third inning, one short of the MLB record (Colorado in 2010).

                          1) Congrats to KL Wheat, who cleaned up big-time with the Kentucky Derby Saturday; he turned a five-figure profit for the day, which is damn impressive.

                                Eastern Conference Semifinals – Game 4 (76ers lead 2-1)

Toronto at Philadelphia (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET)

Toronto captured the series opener between these Atlantic division rivals and looked like the Raptors would cruise to the Eastern Conference Finals. However, the Sixers rebounded with a solid defensive effort in Game 2 to even up the series before ripping the Raptors, 116-95 in Game 3 to go up 2-1 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The 76ers dropped 64 first half points on the Raptors, while all five starters for Philadelphia registered double-figures in scoring, led by Joel Embiid’s 33 points. Jimmy Butler contributed 22 points for the Sixers, while fellow midseason acquisition Tobias Harris put up 13 points and eight rebounds. Philadelphia shot 51% from the floor and converted 20-of-23 free throws as the Sixers limited the Raptors to only 14 points in the fourth quarter to cash the UNDER of 216 ½.

Kawhi Leonard did his part to keep Toronto hanging around by scoring 33 points, but point guard Kyle Lowry was limited to seven points on 2-of-10 shooting and owned a dreadful -28 in the plus/minus department. Pascal Siakam scored 20 points for the Raptors, but the forward is listed as doubtful for Game 4 with a calf injury. Siakam is having a terrific series by averaging 23.3 points per game, while the former New Mexico State standout has topped the 20-point mark six times in the playoffs.

The ‘under’ has gone 3-0 in the first three games of this series and the oddsmakers continue to drop the totals. Game 1 closed at 223, followed by 220 and 216 ½ in the second and third installments. The total for Game 4 opened 215 and has been dropped to 214 ½ as of Sunday. Chris David of VegasInsider.com isn’t buying the move.

He explained, “Even though the results have leaned to the ‘under’ in this series, two of the first three games could’ve easily went ‘over’ if it wasn’t for a couple low-scoring fourth quarters. Neither team has connected from distance and I’m of the belief that the shots will eventually fall. These afternoon games aren’t easy to handicap but both teams have flourished in these 3:00-3:30 p.m. ET tipoffs, especially offensively. The Sixers have gone 5-1 in this time slot and the offense has averaged 122.3 PPG. Meanwhile, the Raptors have posted 118 PPG in afternoon games while averaging 118 PPG. I’m expecting more points to be scored and would lean high for both team totals over and the game ‘over’ as well.”

NBA expert Tony Mejia provides his thoughts on this pivotal Game 4, ““The potential absence of Siakam should be worth at least two points if he’s ruled out before tip-off and certainly would hurt the Raptors long-term, but in a one-game situation, may not be the end of the world. The 76ers really haven’t prepared to face a Toronto lineup without him, which means that Marc Gasol, Lowry and likely starter Serge Ibaka will have more touches in store and could find a rhythm that Philadelphia will have to adjust on the fly in order to disrupt.”

The Raptors are flipped to an underdog for the first time in the playoffs as Toronto compiled a 9-6 ATS mark when receiving points this season. However, Toronto has lost 11 of its past 13 games as a road underdog in the postseason dating back to the 2016 second round against Miami. The 76ers have won five of their last six as a playoff favorite, including a 5-3 SU/ATS mark when laying points at Wells Fargo Center since 2018.

Western Conference Semifinals – Game 4 (Blazers lead 2-1)

Denver at Portland (TNT, 7:05 p.m. ET)

The Blazers have provided plenty of drama at the Moda Center these playoffs following a disappointing sweep at the hands of the Pelicans in last season’s first round. Damian Lillard single-handedly eliminated the Thunder on a buzzer-beating three-pointer to close out the first round, giving Portland a perfect 3-0 home mark to open the playoffs.

After Portland rebounded from a Game 1 loss at Denver, the Blazers’ defense shut down the Nuggets in a 97-90 triumph at Pepsi Center to even the series at 1-1 headed back to the Pacific Northwest. Game 3 on Friday night was one to remember (and stay up late for) as the Blazers outlasted the Nuggets in four overtimes, 140-137. Denver cashed as five-point underdogs, while the game would have stayed UNDER the total of 215 if not for the extra sessions as regulation ended tied at 102-102.

Denver was on its way to a 2-1 series advantage following Jamal Murray’s three-pointer to give the Nuggets a 100-95 lead with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Maurice Harkless scored consecutive baskets for the Blazers, including a trey to even the score at 100 as the two division rivals exchanged two-pointers in the final 30 seconds to head to overtime.

Both teams owned four-point leads in the third overtime, including Denver’s 129-125 advantage with under 30 seconds remaining before Lillard converted a pair of layups to force the first four-overtime playoff game since 1953 between the Celtics and Syracuse Nationals. Rodney Hood knocked the go-ahead three-pointer in the fourth overtime with 18.6 seconds remaining to give Portland the lead for good and send Denver to its third road defeat in four tries this postseason.

Obviously there were huge scoring numbers all around with an extra 20 minutes of action as C.J. McCollum paced Portland with 41 points, while Lillard put up 28 points. Murray led the Nuggets by scoring 34 points, while triple-double machine Nikola Jokic posted 33 points, 18 rebounds, and 14 assists, but the center played 65 minutes.

How will the teams approach Game 4 following Friday’s marathon finish? Mejia is back to answer that question, ““The Blazers may have dealt the Nuggets a brutal blow by holding on to win the Game 3 marathon since they should have much fresher legs due to a much lighter first-round workload. Despite not having to deal with a tougher Oklahoma City team, Denver did itself no favors in being pushed to seven games by San Antonio and compounded its issues by fumbling away homecourt advantage in Game 2. From Murray playing through an injury to Jokic working 65 minutes, there’s no way anyone can dispute that Portland is in better shape, at home, to go up 3-1 than desperate Denver is as it attempts to even the series.”

Denver will get its points from Murray and Jokic, but what about the rest of Mike Malone’s squad?

“The great equalizer would be if we see an x-factor emerge. Will Barton finally got going and finished with 22 points off the bench, while Malik Beasley is capable of a huge impact from beyond the arc. Monte Morris, who was excellent as the backup point guard during the regular season and had four double-figure scoring games against the Spurs, is averaging 3.3 points in this series and has been a liability. He’s certainly capable of stepping up and can really provide a spark if he can find his game. If the Nuggets bench is outscored again, they stand no chance,” Mejia notes.

The Nuggets last dropped three consecutive games in early March, while winning straight games off a road loss dating back to mid-February. The Blazers are 4-2 in their previous six Game 4’s of a playoff series at the Moda Center with the two defeats coming to Golden State in the 2016 semifinals and 2017 opening round.
