  • Blazers cruise past Nuggets, 97-90
    May 1, 2019
    ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

DENVER (AP) CJ McCollum scored 20 points, picking up the slack with backcourt mate Damian Lillard struggling, and the Portland Trail Blazers turned back the Denver Nuggets 97-90 on Wednesday night to even their playoff series at 1-1.

The Trail Blazers led by 15 at halftime, 17 in the third quarter and 14 to start the fourth but the Nuggets pulled to 95-90 in the final minute thanks to an astonishing 14 offensive rebounds and a 19-9 run before Rodney Hood's two free throws with 17 seconds left iced it.

''The good news is they had all of those offensive rebounds but they didn't convert a lot,'' Portland coach Terry Stotts said. ''They were 8 for 24 on second-chance points. We were fortunate we came away not hurt as badly as we could have been on the offensive boards.

''(Nikola) Jokic and (Paul) Millsap were just playing volleyball with it. They're both excellent offensive rebounders. They're a top-three offensive rebounding team anyway and we've got to make sure they don't have those opportunities in Game 3.''

Lillard added 14 points but was just 5 of 17 from the floor and 1 of 7 from 3-point range, 24 hours after scoring 39 in the series opener. Still, the Blazers seized the home-court advantage with the series shifting to Portland for Game 3 on Friday night.

Jokic had 16 points and 14 boards but got off to a slow start and wasn't nearly the take-control force he was in Game 1, when he scored 37 points.

With Jokic taking - and missing - just one shot in the first quarter and scoring six points in the first half, the Nuggets trailed 50-35 at halftime after the franchise's worst quarter ever at home in the playoffs, one in which they made just 5 of 23 shots and missed all 10 of their 3-pointers.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone said he admonished his team at halftime, '''if you're not making shots, maybe attack the basket, maybe get to the foul line, maybe get to the rim.' And we were getting such open looks. I understand our players shooting the shot. But when you're not having a night when you're making a shot consistently, you've got to attack the basket, you've got to push pressure on the rim. You've got to think attack instead of settle. And I thought in that first half we didn't have that mind-set.''

To top it off, they lost sparkplug forward Torrey Craig, whose nose was bloodied after he was knocked down and slammed into teammate Monte Morris' foot early in the second quarter.

Moments after Craig hobbled off, leaving a trail of blood, Maurice Harkless rolled his right ankle and also left the game. Harkless didn't return but Craig came back in the second half.

The Nuggets were booed off the court at the break after missing their final eight shots. Denver's backcourt was just 5 of 18 in the first half, including 2 of 11 from Jamal Murray, who would miss much of the fourth quarter while trying to loosen up his tight right thigh he hurt in the last series.

Craig, whose insertion into the starting lineup turned around the Nuggets' first-round series against San Antonio, returned with a face mask with 3 minutes left in the third quarter. He immediately grabbed a rebound and his 3-pointer with a minute left in the quarter was Denver's first since 1:11 of the first quarter.

''I think Torrey Craig is the unsung hero of the game,'' Malone said. ''He's got some (guts). He's got some toughness.''

    SCUFFLE

Jokic pushed Enes Kanter, who slammed into Craig with 43.5 seconds left on a made free throw. Murray took exception to Kanter staring down the fallen Craig and a scuffle ensued at midcourt. Teammates raced to break them up and the two were assessed a double technical.

    BOW TIES

Stotts and his assistants rocked bow ties Wednesday night in honor of Jon Yim, the team's video coordinator and player development coach who was seriously injured in an auto accident last week that left him hospitalized with a broken leg and collapsed lung.

Yim's bow tie habit led to ''Bow Tie Wednesday,'' a tradition that Stotts and his staff are continuing to pay respects to Yim and members of his family who were injured in the accident.

''It was for Jon Yim,'' Stotts said. ''On Wednesdays he would wear bow ties to the game. I think bow ties are undefeated this year.''

    TIP-INS:

Portland: Starting forwards Harkless and Al-Farouq Aminu combined for 10 points in the first quarter after being held to a combined four points in Game 1. ... Lillard, whose 37-foot 3-pointer eliminated the Thunder last week, is just 5 of 19 from long range in this series.

Denver: The Nuggets missed 23 of 29 3-pointers. ... Will Barton sank two foul shots with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter after an odd sequence in which the Jokic missed a jumper and the Nuggets missed five put-backs.

        **********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

        13) Cleveland Browns haven’t made the NFL playoffs since 2002; they’re -$120 to make the playoffs this season, with a rookie head coach and a 2nd-year QB. That would take a pretty big leap of faith on my part, to wager on the Browns to make the 2019 playoffs.

        12) Rookie QB Dwayne Haskins will wear number 7 with the Redskins, the first person to do that since Joe Theismann retired 34 years ago.

        11) Royals swept a doubleheader from Tampa Bay Wednesday, 3-2/8-2; Whit Merrrifield led off bottom of the 1st inning in both games with a double. He is the first player in major leagues to do this since Scott Podsednik, in 2005 for the White Sox.

        10) Part of why the Miami Marlins are terrible:
        — Chris Paddack was traded for Fernando Rodney
        — Domingo Germán was traded for Martin Prado
        — Luis Castillo was traded for Dan Straily

They traded three really good young pitchers for older, marginal players. Then they traded Yelich, Ozuna, Stanton and didn’t get much of a return for them. Astoundingly inept.

        9) Morning line favorite Omaha Beach has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby with a trapped epiglottis, which apparently is a breathing problem. Game Winner (4-1) now appears to the favorite for Saturday’s race.

        8) Chicago Bears hired Brad Childress as senior offensive assistant, which helps explain why he quit as head coach of the AAF team in Atlanta, which turned out to be a good move by him, since the league folded before their first season ended.

        7) Baseball injuries:
        — Mets put P Jeurys Familia (shoulder) on the IL.
        — Indians will put P Corey Kluber (forearm) on IL.

        6) Game 2 of Rockets-Warriors was Tuesday, Game 3 isn’t till Saturday; chance for coaches to make whatever adjustments need to be made. Chance for James Harden’s eye to heal, and for Steph Curry’s left hand to feel a little better- he dislocated a finger in Tuesday’s game.

        5) ESPN the Magazine is shutting down this fall; they tried very hard to be different, and they were different, but in a bad way. Too many articles on stuff not many people care about.

        4) College basketball transfer portal:
        — Former Vandy/Notre Dame F Matt Ryan is transferring to Chattanooga. He is a career 36.5% shooter on the arc who shot only 32.8% for Vandy LY.
        — Georgia poaches grad transfer Donnell Gresham from Northeastern.

        3) San Diego Padres finished April with a 17-13 record, first time since 2010 that they finished the first month of the season with a winning record.

        2) Indians’ ace Corey Kluber got hit by a line drive last night, broke his right forearm and is out for a long time, a huge blow to Cleveland’s chances this season.

        1) This from Ryan Spaeder:

In 2005, Braves’ C Brian McCann hit a sac fly against Paul Quantrill; Dave Roberts (now the Dodgers’ manager) caught the fly ball for San Diego.

Tuesday night, 5,001 days later, McCann flew out against Cal Quantrill, Paul’s son. also against the Padres.

            • Thursday's Playoff Tips
              May 2, 2019
              By Kevin Rogers

Both Eastern Conference semifinal series are knotted up at 1-1 with the venues shifting to Boston and Philadelphia. After the Celtics routed the Bucks in Game 1 at Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee turned the tables on the Celtics with a 21-point blowout in Game 2 to improve to 22-1 SU and 19-4 ATS off a loss this season.

Meanwhile, the 76ers bounced back nicely from a series opening defeat at Toronto to pull even with the Raptors in Monday’s 94-89 victory as 7 ½-point underdogs at Scotiabank Arena. Philadelphia jumped out to a 51-38 halftime edge, while leading by as many as 18 points in the first half. However, Toronto rallied back to cut the deficit to two late in the third quarter. Philadelphia built back the lead to 13 points halfway through the fourth quarter, but Toronto crawled back with a chance to tie it late as Danny Green’s open three-point look bounced out.

Although the 76ers scored fewer points in their Game 2 win (94) than their Game 1 loss (95), Philadelphia ended a 14-game losing streak at Toronto dating back to 2012. Jimmy Butler led the Sixers with 30 points following a 10-point effort in the series opener, while Philadelphia won in spite of only two made field goals and 12 points from Joel Embiid. Philadelphia made less than 40% of its shots from the floor, but the Sixers stepped up at the foul line by knocking down 24-of-26 free throws.

The Raptors received huge contributions from three players and nothing from the rest of their roster. Kawhi Leonard put together a game-high 35 points, Pascal Siakam scored 21 points (on 9-of-25 shooting), and Kyle Lowry posted a 20-point effort for Toronto, who received 13 points from the other six players who took the court. The Raptors were outrebounded for the second straight game, this time by a 52-36 count after Philadelphia collected seven more boards than Toronto in the opener.

The total for Game 3 opened at 217 ½ and was quickly pushed up to 219 ½ even though the ‘under’ has gone 2-0 in this series. Chris David of VegasInsider.com offered up his thoughts on the ‘over/under’ for Thursday’s third installment.

“I thought the oddsmakers sent out a solid number and I was a little surprised that the early action jumped on the ‘over’ in Game 3. Toronto’s defense has been lights out in the playoffs and that’s led to a 6-1 ‘under’ mark. In their two road games at Orlando in the first round, the Raptors held the Magic to 93 and 85 points. Will the unit come to play again while stepping up in class at Philadelphia? Your answer to that question will likely factor into both your side and total leans,” said David.

“Philadelphia was one of the best home teams (31-10) in the regular season and it went 2-1 versus Brooklyn while scoring 145 and 122 points. I note those results because the key to the 76ers is their offense and they’ve had a huge difference in scoring at home (118.6 PPG) than on the road (111.8 PPG). Philadelphia has used its homecourt to its advantage this season, especially out of the gate in the first quarter. The 76ers lead the league with 31.2 PPG at home in the first 12 minutes and I’d ride that trend on Thursday, plus I would look at the Philadelphia Team Total Over (108) as well.”

VegasInsider.com NBA expert Tony Mejia checks in with his thoughts on Game 3, “Only the Warriors and Bucks had a better regular-season road record than the Raptors, who imposed their will against Orlando as a visitor twice in the first round. After stealing Game 2 despite Embiid looking like a shell of himself, Philadelphia is in excellent shape but needs Tobias Harris and J.J. Redick to join Butler in helping to spread the floor and push the pace. Toronto has shown its capable of slowing the 76ers down and can defend Embiid straight up since Marc Gasol plays him so well, so tempo should play a huge role in Game 3 and I think we’ll see the home team try to speed things up. Philadelphia played the fastest-paced series of the first round against Brooklyn but failed to crack 100 points against Toronto despite leaving Scotiabank Arena with a split.”

Since 2017, the Raptors are 1-4 in Game 3’s of a playoff series, including double-digit losses at Washington (’18 first round) and Milwaukee (’17 first round). However, Toronto ended up winning both those series in six games and clinched with the fourth victory coming on the road. In the previous three postseasons, the Raptors lost 14 of 19 games away from Scotiabank Arena before winning the first two games in the opening round against Orlando.

The 76ers and Raptors split a pair of meetings in Philadelphia this season. The Sixers routed the Raptors on December 22 at Wells Fargo Center, 126-101 as seven-point favorites, led by Embiid’s 27 points and 26 points from Ben Simmons. Leonard sat out for Toronto that night as the 76ers outscored the Raptors in the second half, 61-42.

Toronto won the second matchup in Philadelphia in February, 119-107 as 2 ½-point underdogs. Leonard converted only three field goals, but knocked down 16 free throws to lead Toronto with 24 points. The Raptors attempted 89 shots compared to 70 by Philadelphia, while the Sixers hit 38-of-41 free throw attempts. Since January 2015, the Raptors have won seven of 10 visits to Philadelphia, while the OVER has cashed seven times, although the February meeting went UNDER the total of 230 ½.

              • Preview: Raptors (58-24) at 76ers (51-31)
                Date: May 02, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

The Philadelphia 76ers will return home and look to take a 2-1 lead when they host the Toronto Raptors in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Thursday night.

The third-seeded Sixers evened the series at one game apiece with a gritty 94-89 win Monday in Toronto.

Philadelphia could be short-handed once again, though forward Mike Scott, who has been out with a heel contusion and plantar fasciitis, did practice on Wednesday. All-Star center Joel Embiid also continues to be hampered by a sore left knee, though he remains probable.

"I think we just did our job," said 76ers guard Jimmy Butler after scoring 30 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and handing out five assists in Game 2 to halt a 14-game losing streak in Toronto. "Everybody wants to paint a picture that we haven't won here in however many years. I'm just glad that we came out on top. Going home, we just need to do the same thing we did tonight."

If the starters are limited, the Sixers' bench will be crucial. In Game 2, James Ennis scored a playoff career-high 13 points while Greg Monroe backed up Embiid with 10 points and five rebounds.

Boban Marjanovic only played one minute and Monroe's output had to be surprising.

"They came in and made shots," Butler said of the reserves. "But more than anything, they were guarding."

The Sixers' defense was shaky in Game 1 and terrific in Game 2 as they held the Raptors to 36.7 percent shooting, including 27 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Toronto made only 10 of 37 treys.

"The whole game was a good momentum swing for us as a team," forward Tobias Harris said. "We came in with a game plan, an adjustment that was made and we executed it. We did it very well. That was big for us, big for our confidence and we've got to go back home and be able to protect our court."

Kawhi Leonard led the second-seeded Raptors with 35 points and Pascal Siakam added 21 but shot just 9 of 25 from the field. The Toronto bench was mostly ineffective in Game 2, a trend that must change if it's going to take a lead in this series.

Reserve forward Norman Powell has scored just three points in two playoff games against the Sixers. Serge Ibaka is shooting 4 of 14 and has committed nine fouls. Point guard Fred VanVleet failed to score in Game 2.

But Raptors head coach Nick Nurse isn't focused solely on statistics.

"(VanVleet's) done his job (on defense) all these playoffs," Nurse told reporters. "He was really good on (Orlando's Terrence) Ross, he's been good on (JJ) Redick as well. He's been excellent on defense, and again, I think Norm's been really good on defense as well."

Conversely, the Raptors believe they simply missed too many shots. The Sixers' defense might have been improved, but the Raptors missed 27 treys.

Guard Danny Green misfired on a potential 3-pointer that would have tied Game 2 in the waning seconds.

"You have to take them," Raptors center Marc Gasol said. "Those are good looks. You take them over and over again. You can't get stuck on a missed shot or two missed shots. If it's a good shot and you feel in rhythm, take it. If not, move it. Don't just overthink it and kill the flow of the game."

                  • Embiid, 76ers rout Raptors, 116-95
                    May 2, 2019
                    ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Joel Embiid had knocked the air out of Toronto by the time he punctuated a Game 3 victory with a windmill dunk. Embiid sprinted down the court with his arms stretched out like airplane wings, and the Philadelphia 76ers flying high in the postseason.

Embiid refused to get tripped up back in Philly, scoring 33 points and playing to the ''MVP!'' chants to lead the Sixers to a 116-95 victory over Toronto Raptors on Thursday night.

Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

''When I have fun, my game just changes,'' Embiid said. ''I'm always told if I don't smile during the game it means I'm having a bad game or I'm not into it. I know to get my game going, I've got to have fun on the court.''

Embiid also had 10 rebounds, shaking off a pair of passive games and became the driving force on offense the Sixers needed as they chase their first NBA championship since 1983.

He made the game his own in the third quarter and helped the Sixers put away a Raptors team badly overmatched outside of Kawhi Leonard.

Embiid struck a chord when he buried a 3 in the third that stretched Philadelphia's lead to 12. That was start of a string of plays that got Toronto's attention. Embiid chased a loose ball and was tripped when Pascal Siakam intentionally stuck out his right leg and sent Philly's All-Star tumbling to the court. The crowd went wild and Siakam was hit with a flagrant foul. Embiid made both free throws as fans - including some of Philadelphia's biggest sports stars - serenaded him with chants of ''MVP! MVP!''

Jimmy Butler, the Game 2 standout, dunked off his own steal and the Sixers had quickly put the game out of reach. Butler had 22 points.

Embiid scored another layup and waved his arms and pointed with a smile as wide as the hoop. Embiid went 9 of 18 from the floor and made 12 of 13 free throws.

It was moments like this why the 76ers endured the painful Process - the years of tanking seasons for high draft picks, like in 2014 when they drafted Embiid with the No. 3 overall pick.

Hall of Famer Allen Iverson and rapper Meek Mill engaged in a lengthy embrace from the courtside seats as the Sixers moved two wins away from their Eastern Conference final appearance since 2001.

The Sixers just had to survive Leonard.

Leonard toyed with Ben Simmons in the third to lead Toronto's charge back into the game. The Raptors ran Simmons through screens to give Leonard the space he needed to create and bury open jumpers. And when there was no space, Leonard simply bullied his way to the basket. He shoved a right elbow into James Ennis III and spun around him for a two-handed jam. Leonard made all six baskets and scored 14 points in the quarter to cut the deficit to eight points. Kyle Lowry and Danny Green offered little help (20 combined points) and Leonard couldn't carry the Raptors on his own.

''They did a great job scoring. We didn't,'' Leonard said.

Leonard scored 33 points, and Siakam added 20.

''I think we got outplayed in just about every area we can get outplayed,'' Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. ''It's been a while since we've seen this team play that way.''

The Sixers split the two games in Toronto after a losing streak in the Canadian city that dated to 2012. They returned home to a delirious crowd amped for one of the most crucial games of the Process era.

Embiid wore a black Process hoodie to the postgame press conference.

''We've got a lot more to give and do something special,'' Embiid said.

Embiid, who missed a game against New Jersey in the last series with a sore left knee, averaged only 14 points and shot 28 percent (7 of 25) from the floor in the first two games and was tied up by Marc Gasol in frustrating fashion. Not in Game 3. Embiid buried a 3 and followed with a sweet spin move on Gasol the next time down that got the Sixers rolling. The franchise center's sweetest play came when he blocked Leonard's layup in the lane, hustled back and got the ball in his hands, and connected with Tobias Harris in the corner for a 3. Embiid scored 18 points in the half and pushed the Sixers to a 64-53 lead at the break.

                    TIP-INS

Raptors: Serge Ibaka was hit with a flagrant foul on JJ Redick in the first quarter.

76ers: Simmons, an Australian, smacked Kyle Lowry right in the land down under and sent the Raptors guard down and smacking the court in pain. ...

Greg Monroe (sprained left ankle) and Mike Scott (right foot) played ... Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins, Flyers star James van Riemsdyk and Eagles QB Carson Wentz rang the ceremonial Liberty Bell to start the game.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

                        13) Mets 1, Reds 0— Noah Syndergaard threw a complete game 1-0 shutout and hit a home run; this is only the 7th time this has EVER happened, and only second time since 1971. Here are the other six times this happened (thanks to Andrew Simon for the research):

                        — Red Ruffing 8/13/32
                        — Spud Chandler, 5/21/38
                        — Early Wynn, 5/1/59
                        — Jim Bunning, 5/5/65
                        — Juan Pizarro, 9/16/71
                        — Bob Welch, 6/17.83

                        12) %age of runs scored on home runs the last four years:
                        2016: 40.2%
                        2017: 42.3%
                        2018: 40.3%
                        2019: 43.4% (thru Monday)

                        Before 2016, the all-time record was 37.3%.

                        11) Milwaukee Brewers have pitching issues; only once in their last 18 games has their starting pitcher finished the 6th inning; in half of those 18 games, the starter didn’t even finish the 5th inning, so there has been a tremendous strain on their bullpen.

                        10) Pac-12 is joining the ACC, Big 14 in moving to 20 conference basketball games, starting with the 2020-21 season. This does two main things:
                        — Creates more programming for the Pac-12 Network.
                        — Decreases the opportunities for mid-majors to schedule quality non-league games.

Now, if the geniuses who run the Pac-12 would allow their network to be shown on DirecTV. then maybe the league could get the exposure it deserves.

                        9) Golden State Warriors’ TV guy Jim Barnett was in the SF Giants’ TV booth during the game Wednesday night; he was saying how when he played in the NBA (Barnett had an 11-year career, scoring 11.7 ppg), he went through four pairs of sneakers per season.

Then he was saying that nowadays, Stephen Curry wears a different pair of sneakers every game. Must make the Warriors’ equipment manager’s job a real joy.

                        8) Apparently the family of a Chinese student admitted to Stanford in 2017 paid $6.5M to try to guarantee her spot there. My question is, why? Stanford is an excellent school, but still……

                        Why $6.5M? Why not $1M? Or $10M?

Is it that difficult to get into these schools? Or that lucrative to be an alumnus of one of these schools? Why not just save the $6.5M and go to a state school?

                        7) Baseball injuries:
                        — White Sox put P Carlos Rodon (edema in left arm) on IL.

                        6) College basketball transfer portal:
                        — Rutgers poaches Stony Brook grad transfer Akwasi Yeboah (16.7 ppg).

                        5) Wednesday night was 7th time in Jacob deGrom’s career that he’s thrown 7+ scoreless innings without getting the win in that game.

                        4) From the New York Post:

“Over last three fiscal years, Madison Square Garden paid CEO James Dolan $75.6M, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of his shareholders. The average salary for CEO’s at similar companies is $17M a year.

The lawsuit claims Dolan is too focused on touring and recording as the frontman and guitarist for his band JD & the Straight Shot. In 2017 the band performed 50 times in six countries and 41 US cities.”

Lot fewer people would complain about Dolan if the Knicks didn’t suck every year. They’ve missed the playoffs the last six years, haven’t won an NBA title since 1973. NHL’s Rangers haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1994; that is their only title since 1940- they missed the playoffs the last two years.

                        3) There are 16 players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who weren’t drafted.

                        2) Sounds like Auburn is going to have a freshman QB starting this fall, which isn’t always good for a coach’s job security.

                        1) Get well soon to Celtics’ GM Danny Ainge, who suffered a mild heart attack in Milwaukee Tuesday night. He received immediate medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.

                              Nov. 1 - Celtics (-2) 117 vs. Bucks 113 (Over 220.5)

The Bucks rebounded nicely from a dreadful Game 1 by posting a 22-point rout of the Celtics in Game 2, scoring 33 more points than they produced in the series opener.

They’ll now take the floor at TD Garden hoping the adjustment period that lies ahead doesn’t trip them as drastically as it did to open the series. Because Blake Griffin was missing in the first two games of the first round, Milwaukee didn’t really get much of a challenge against Detroit. I believe that did it a disservice in Game 1 and may make it more difficult to get settled in a hostile arena against a team that can really feed off their crowd in a way the Pistons couldn’t.

Celtics-Bucks definitely has the punch-counterpunch feel of a series that’s destined to go the distance.

Although Giannis Antetokounmpo took the brunt of the criticism for the Game 1 loss since he shot 7-for-21, Eric Bledsoe deserved the most blame because he shrunk and did so early. He was the first Bucks player subbed out and could never get comfortable against Kyrie Irving, ultimately finishing 1-for-5 from the field in a dreadful effort in which he gave his team nothing. If Bledsoe isn’t out there pushing pace so Antetokounmpo can run the floor, the Bucks are ordinary. A Celtics team with a defensive anchor like Al Horford can make life difficult.

Bledsoe was much better in Game 2, finishing a plus-23 by scoring 21 points and adding five assists. It might surprise you to find out that Milwaukee’s plus-minus leader in their series-tying victory was George Hill, who came off the bench and defended as the glue guy in a unit that helped pull away from the Celtics in the third quarter. Brook Lopez hasn’t had the impact that he enjoyed during the regular season so far in the series, so we’ll see if he’s able to have more of an impact on the road.

Irving was outplayed on Tuesday night, shooting 4-for-18, while Jayson Tatum played poorly in finishing 2-for-10. He’s missed 13 of 17 shots in this series. Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier shot 9-for-16 from the field off the bench in the win, combining for 24 points, but shot 3-for-15 in Game 2. Getting back home should help all those guys bounce back. Boston has won four of its last five home games but hasn’t played on its floor since a 99-91 Game 2 win over the Pacers in first-round action.

Milwaukee has more road wins than anyone except Golden State since the Warriors had to put in extra work at Staples Center to get past the Clippers. It won its last trip into Boston on Dec. 21, winning 120-107 by capitalizing on Horford’s absence. Horford and Morris have been Boston’s most consistent performers thus far in this series, which is key since they’re the duo being tasked with helping to slow down Antetokounmpo. “Greek Freak” averaged 31 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 59 percent in leading the Bucks to a 2-1 regular-season mark against Boston. He led the way with 29 points on Tuesday in addition to nine boards and four assists and must produce even more if Milwaukee is going to steal back homecourt advantage over the next few days. The 22 points he scored in Game 1 won’t cut it..

Khris Middleton shot just 36.5 percent but averaged 17.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists against Boston this season. He finished 7-for-10 from 3-point range in Game 2 to deliver 28 points after being Milwaukee’s top performer amid the series-opening disappointment by finishing with 16 points, 10 boards and six assists. Middleton was drastically less efficient on the road during the regular-season than he was at home, shooting just 40 percent from the field. He did shoot 36 percent from 3-point range and averaged 17.3 points, so the Bucks will be counting on him to continue his steady play to give them a boost.

Both teams will press forward without key guards for at least another game with Malcolm Brogdon and Marcus Smart remaining sidelined. Brogdon is out with a foot injury that has kept him out the past few weeks, which means Bledsoe and Hill can expect their normal allotment of minutes. Brogdon, who led the league in free-throw shooting this season while shooting nearly 43 percent and playing fantastic perimeter defense, is nearing a return and is likely to play late in the series. Smart, a tremendous perimeter defender and a competitor whose intensity is infectious, tore his oblique just before the playoffs began. He’s been seen running and is far ahead of schedule but there’s no timetable for a return, which means Milwaukee may miss him altogether.

The Bucks have averaged 122 points in their wins while being suffocated and held to 90 in their loss, so their team total being set at 109 seems fitting. Boston’s number has been placed at 211.

Oddsmakers sent out an opening total of 224.5 for Game 1 and saw it close at 223.5 at most books. The number dipped to 219.5 for Tuesday’s game and crept over late. During the season, the pair watched the ‘over’ go 2-1 in their three games and the totals ranged from 220.5 to 227.5. The ’under’ went 5-1 in that 2016 series between Stevens’ Celtics and Budenholzer’s Hawks despite no total closing higher than 206 and the last two winding up sub-200.

It was rare to see the Bucks listed as underdogs this season as they’ll be in that role for the first time since April 10 loss to Oklahoma City. They’ve performed well in the role, going 6-3 straight up and 7-2 against the spread while the ‘over’ went 7-2 in those games. You can also toss out one of the losses as the Bucks rested Antetokounmpo near the end of their schedule.

Despite the solid numbers when catching points, Chris David of VegasInsider.com believes Boston’s recent playoff pedigree at home justifies them being a favorite in Game 3.

“Going back to last year’s improbable playoff run with an undermanned roster, Boston went an eye-opening 12-1 both straight up and against the spread at TD Garden. To be fair, they did get a lucky cover in Game 2 of the first round against Indiana but a win is a win and we can’t dismiss this run. In case you forgot, the lone loss in 2018 came against LeBron James and the Cavaliers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals when the young Celtics couldn’t buy shot from the outside,” said David. “Since Brad Stevens took over as head coach with Boston, the club has gone 19-9 SU and 21-7 ATS in 28 playoff games at home.

“Since I mentioned the loss to Cleveland last season, it’s important to know that six of the nine losses came against LeBron and his Cleveland-led teams. In other matchups, Boston went 16-3 both SU and ATS at home under Stevens in the postseason,” added David. “Four of those victories came in the first round of the playoffs last season against the Bucks with the outcomes decided by an average of 10.3 points per game.”

Officials for this game, Ken Mauer, Tony Brown and Kane Fitzgerald aren't shy about blowing their whistle and becoming part of the show. All have seen the 'over' prevail in the majority of their contests. Game 4 will be played Monday night in Boston, so a miserable, angst-filled weekend awaits the loser.

The Trail Blazers put their fresher legs to good use in clamping down against the Nuggets in Game 2, avoiding an 0-2 series deficit and a must-win tonight. We’ll now get to see if they can put their foot on Denver’s throat at home the way they did the Thunder the last time they took the floor at Moda Center.

Damian Lillard finished off a 50-point night with a series-clinching 3-pointer over Paul George’s outstretched arms to eliminate Oklahoma City on April 23. It’s going to be difficult to ever reproduce the magic of that evening, but the Blazers do have an 11-game home winning streak, last losing to OKC on March 7. Only the Bucks and Nuggets have had more success at home than the Trail Blazers.

Denver point guard Jamal Murray has been receiving treatment after injuring his right thigh in Game 2. His mobility was noticeably compromised on Wednesday night and factored into the Nuggets fading in the second half, so we’ll see if he’s able to make it through tonight’s game while supplying his normal production. That’s an immense variable since we’d see more of Monte Morris and Will Barton in a playmaker role if Murray isn’t right.

Denver opened the series as a slight favorite (-145) over the Trail Blazers (+125), who then became a great value bet prior to Game 2 since they went into that game at 14-to-1 to win the West and 40-to-1 to win the NBA title, making them the biggest longshot remaining in the field according to Westgate Superbook prior to getting even. As things stand now, if you think the Warriors are at all vulnerable, Lillard, an Oakland native, is currently more likely to get over against them than James Harden given his injured eyelid and rough form shooting the ball.

Portland had dropped seven of eight against Denver dating back to last season entering Game 2, but Enes Kanter continued playing through shoulder pain and was the x-factor the Blazers need him to be to at least provide some resistance against Nikola Jokic, who has long dominated them and continues to be a terror inside. Meyers Leonard and Zack Collins have also had roles in trying to make life as difficult as possible for Jokic, who doesn’t have to deal with former teammate and good friend Jusuf Nurkic, who was lost for the season on March 25 with a horrific ankle injury.

Despite CJ McCollum and Mo Harkless dealing with injuries and only getting healthy late in the season, the Blazers hit their stride with Evan Turner improving off the bench and newcomer Rodney Hood scoring efficiently the way he was rarely able to in a similar role with the LeBron James-led Cavs last season.

NBA expert Kevin Rogers points out a few trends that favor the home team in Game 3.

“For the most part, the Blazers have actually performed well off a road win since the All-Star break. Portland has won nine of its last 13 games off a highway victory, including the Lillard-led clincher against Oklahoma City,” Rogers said. “The Blazers have compiled a solid 13-1 record in the past 14 games at the Moda Center since early February with the lone defeat coming to the Thunder in overtime on March 7. However, the Nuggets covered in both visits to Portland, including as 8.5-point underdogs late in the season in a 115-108 setback.”

Kanter has been wearing padding over his left shoulder, but has remained effective and is averaging 20.5 points and eight boards through the first two games, keeping pace with Jokic’s 26.5 points, 11. 5 rebounds and six assists. He’s making the big man work, and there was significant concern that he wouldn’t be able to defend effectively enough to help replace Nurkic when the postseason began, so his effort must be recognized as the x-factor for Portland.

Lillard played in all four regular-season meetings against Denver, averaging 21.3 points but shooting just 37 percent from the field and 28.6 from 3-point range. Although he scored 39 points in the Game 1 loss, Gary Harris helped limit him to just 14 points on 5-for-17 shots in Game 2. Over the first two games of this series, he’s shot 5-for-19 from 3-point range, which makes you wonder if an explosion is coming now that he’s back home. Will familiarity and home love lead to the return of “Logo” Lillard? If so, Denver will have a long night ahead. Lillard shot 40 percent from 3-point range at home as opposed to 34 percent on the road during the regular season and despite scoring roughly the same amount of points per game.

The team total for the Blazers has been set at 109.5, while Denver comes in at 105.5. The Nuggets have eclipsed that number only once in its last four games. Mike Callahan, Eric Lewis and Rodney Mott will be on the whistle. Portland will host Game 4 on Sunday evening.
