    • Monday’s List of 13; Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Cardinals 20, Packers 17—14-point underdog Arizona ended lot of Survivor pools with this win; they also ended Mike McCarthy’s tenure as Packers’ coach- he was fired before the 4:00 games ended. Green Bay missed a 49-yard FG at the gun, as Packers lost for 5th time in last six games. This was the Cardinals’ first win in Wisconsin since 1949- they had lost their last eight visits there.

Green Bay has only one offensive TD in 2nd half of their last three games. Right now, the Packers would draft after Cleveland; who would’ve expected that this summer? Will be very interested to see who this team hires as their next head coach.

Giants 30, Bears 27 OT— An unusual game:
      — Chicago gifted the Giants with a defensive TD 0:38 into the game.
      — Bears scored a TD, with a defensive lineman carrying the ball.
      — Giants ended the first half by making a 57-yard FG.
      — Giants took the lead when a WR threw a 49-yard TD pass.
      — Bears were down 10 with 1:30 left, but kicked a FG, recovered an onside kick, then tied the game on a pass by a RB at the gun.
      — Giants won in OT; they’ve won three of their last four games.
      — Seven of last nine Chicago games, last four New Jersey games went over total.

Jaguars 6, Colts 0— Second NFL game this season without a TD scored; other one was also a Jaguar home game (9-6 win over Titans). There was another game with no offensive TD’s scored (Jets-Dolphins) but there was a defensive TD in that game.

Loss snaps a 5-game Indy win streak, 7-game Jacksonville losing skid; Jaguar QB Kessler gets first win as an NFL starter (1-8) after losing all this starts for Cleveland in ’16.

Buccaneers 24, Panthers 17— Carolina loses its 4th game in row; they have one takeaway in those four games. Newton threw four INTs in this game. Panthers are 1-5 on road this year, and they were down 17-0 in third quarter of that game. Carolina is still only game out of second Wild Card spot, if Redskins lose Monday night.

First time in 10 years this season series was split; Buccaneers had 14-yard edge in field position. Bucs have only one giveaway in last two games, after 27 in previous nine games.

Rams 30, Lions 16— Aaron Donald is freakin’ awesome; for second game in row, his strip/sack created an LA TD that put them in commanding position. Rams scored 30 points but watching the game, I felt like Detroit has a good defense; two of Rams’ three TD drives started in Detroit territory. LA beat spread for only second time in last eight games, running ball for 149 yards.

First time since 1979 Rams won NFC West in consecutive seasons. Five of last six Detroit games stayed under the total; Lions had ball in red zone five times, scored only one TD, three FG’s- very hard to beat the Rams scoring only one TD. Rams are now 9-2-1 vs spread in their last 12 post-bye games.

Ravens 26, Falcons 16— Whats happened to Atlanta’s offense? They gained total of only 131 yards in this game, throwing for only 97. Falcons lost last four games, scoring 16-19-17-16 points- their longest play in this game was 17 yards.

Both teams scored one offensive TD and each team scored a defensive TD.

At this point, Baltimore is the #6 seed in the AFC; Lamar Jackson is now 3-0 as an NFL starter; will Joe Flacco get traded this winter?

Texans 29, Browns 13— Houston won its last nine games after starting season 0-3; they’re 17-10-1 vs spread in last 28 games as a home favorite, and covered five of last six tilts overall.

Cleveland turned ball over four times (-4), after having four giveaways total in their previous five games. Since ’15, Cleveland is 10-19-1 as road underdogs, 2-3-1 this year. Browns outgained Houston in this game while running 22 fewer plays (74-52), but when you’re -4 in turnovers, you lose just about all the time.

Dolphins 21, Bills 17— Buffalo outgained Dolphins 415-175 but lost; they turned ball over three times (-2). Miami is 4-0 when it allows 20 or fewer points, 1-6 when they allow more. Dolphins are still struggling on 3rd down; they’ve converted just 17 of last 63 3rd down plays.

Dolphins are 5-1 at home this season; last two years, Fish are 3-0-2 as home favorites, 2-0-1 this season. Buffalo ran ball for 212-167-198 yards in its last three games. Under is 3-0-1 in Miami’s last four games.

Broncos 24, Bengals 10— I’m told that quarterback is an important position, and it doesn’t look like Cincinnati has one, with Andy Dalton injured. Denver ran ball for 218 yards, had 10-yard edge in field position, sending Bengals to sixth loss in their last seven games. Last four years, Broncos are 9-4-1 as road favorites, 2-0 this year. Last five Denver games stayed under total.

He also has 508 regular-season TD passes, which ties him with Brett Favre on the career list. Manning is first with 539 and Drew Brees has 518. ... STREAKS & STATS

Houston extended its franchise-record winning streak to nine games with a 29-13 victory over Cleveland. ... New England clinched its 18th straight winning season. It's the second-longest streak in NFL history. The record is held by Dallas at 20 seasons from 1966-85. ... Baltimore held Atlanta to just 131 total yards in its third straight win, 26-16. It was Atlanta's worst offensive showing since a 105-yard effort against San Francisco on Dec. 12, 1999. Matt Ryan was 16 of 26 for 131 yards, the fewest passing yards in a game he played from start to finish in his 11-year career. ... Carolina's Cam Newton has thrown at least two TD passes in 11 straight games, a franchise record. ... Miami beat Buffalo 21-17 despite being outgained 415-175. ... Jacksonville stopped a seven-game slide with a 6-0 win over Indianapolis, and snapped the Colts' five-game winning streak. It was the Jaguars' seventh shutout in franchise history and first at home since beating the New York Jets 41-0 in 2006. ... New England's Tom Brady improved to 5-0 against Minnesota, one of five teams (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Tampa Bay) he has a perfect regular-season record against.

        ---

        CLINCHED

The Los Angeles Rams (11-1) beat Detroit 30-16 to win the NFC West title for the second straight season and move a step closer to earning home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs. They took a one-game lead over New Orleans after the Saints lost to Dallas on Thursday night. It's a cushion Los Angeles needs because its only loss was against the Saints last month. The Rams have won consecutive division titles for the first time since the 1978-79 seasons.

        ---

        SENT PACKING

The Green Bay Packers fired coach Mike McCarthy and made offensive coordinator Joe Philbin the interim head coach. The move announced by team president Mark Murphy came after a stunning 20-17 loss on Sunday to the Arizona Cardinals, dropping Green Bay to 4-7-1. McCarthy was in his 13th season as coach. The Packers won the Super Bowl under McCarthy in the 2010 season. He finishes with a record of 125-77-2.

        ---

        SELECT COMPANY

Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes leads the NFL with 41 touchdown passes, joining Peyton Manning (44 in 2004 and 41 in 2013) and Tom Brady (41 in 2007) as the only quarterbacks in league history with at least 40 in their team's first 12 games of a season. Manning and Brady each were selected Associated Press Most Valuable Players in those seasons. Mahomes has seven games with at least four TD passes this season, the second most in a single season, trailing only Manning (nine games in 2013).

        ---

        COLD NORTH

All four teams in the NFC North lost Sunday. Division-leading Chicago was upset by the New York Giants 30-27 in overtime, second-place Minnesota fell 24-10 at New England, third-place Green Bay was stunned 20-17 by Arizona; and last-place Detroit dropped its game to the Los Angeles Rams, 30-16.

        ---

        SEE TOM RUN

Tom Brady reached another milestone in New England's 24-10 win over Minnesota: 1,000 yards rushing in his career. He hit the mark on a 5-yard scramble in the first quarter. He slid to a stop, popped to his knee and signaled for a first down. Never considered much of a mobile quarterback, it took Brady 19 years and 265 games to reach the milestone - the most by a player since the merger. At 41, he is also the oldest player to reach 1,000 career rushing yards since 1970.

        ---

        THIRD TIME'S A CHARM

Michael Badgley kicked a 29-yard field goal on the final play to lift the Los Angeles Chargers to a 33-30 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. Badgley initially missed a 39-yard kick, but Pittsburgh was penalized for being offside. Badgley's ensuing 34-yard attempt was blocked, but the Steelers were again flagged for jumping across the line of scrimmage before the snap. Badgley then drilled his third attempt at the winner.

        ---

        BIG MAC

Carolina's Christian McCaffrey ran for 106 yards on 10 carries and had nine catches for 55 yards with a touchdown in the Panthers' 24-17 loss at Tampa Bay. He's the first player in NFL history to record at least 50 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards in five consecutive games.

        ---

        NO JOSHIN'

Buffalo rookie quarterback Josh Allen threw for 231 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 135 yards - a franchise record for a QB - in the Bills' 21-17 loss at Miami. He became the fourth player in NFL history with at least two touchdown passes and 125 or more yards rushing in a game, joining Walter Payton (1983 at New Orleans), Tobin Rote (1951 at Detroit) and Michael Vick (2010 at the New York Giants).

        ---

        SLOPPY

Cincinnati was penalized eight times in the first half of its 24-10 loss to Denver, its most in an opening half since 2009. The Bengals finished with 12 penalties for 100 yards. ... The New York Jets were flagged 11 times for 96 yards in their 26-22 defeat at Tennessee, including three times on the Titans' final drive with one offsetting. The Titans, who came in as the NFL's least-penalized team, had eight for 75 yards.

        ---

        IT'S TRICKY!

Chicago forced overtime in its 30-27 loss to the New York Giants on a 1-yard touchdown pass from halfback Tarik Cohen to Anthony Miller as time expired in the fourth quarter. Earlier in the game, Bears nose tackle Akiem Hicks dived over the goal line on fourth down from 1 yard on a play reminiscent of William ''Refrigerator'' Perry in Chicago's glory days in the mid-1980s. Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had some trickery of his own, throwing a 49-yard touchdown pass to Russell Shepard. Beckham, who also threw a 57-yard touchdown pass and had a 33-yard touchdown catch against Carolina in Week 5, is the first player since 1924 to record multiple games with a TD pass and TD catch in a single season.

        ---

        BAKER'S BROWNOUT

Cleveland's Baker Mayfield, the top overall pick in this year's draft, had his worst game of the season, throwing three interceptions in the Browns' 29-13 loss to Houston. It was the first time since he was a freshman at Texas Tech in 2013 that he had three passes picked off. He entered the game having thrown nine touchdown passes with just one interception in the past three games as the Browns (4-7-1) won consecutive games for the first time since 2014. He finished with 397 yards passing and had a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter after throwing a career-best four in a win over the Bengals last week.

        ---

        WINNING FEELING

Jacksonville's Cody Kessler, who replaced the benched Blake Bortles this week, completed 18 of 24 passes for 150 yards in the Jaguars' 6-0 victory over Indianapolis - his first win in nine career starts. Kessler was sacked three times but played turnover-free football - barely. He had one interception dropped and managed to wrestle away a fumble of his own. He also was evaluated for a concussion early in the game but returned.

        ---

        SIDELINED

Cincinnati wide receiver A.J. Green returned after missing three games with an injured toe on his right foot, but he lasted only one quarter in the Bengals' 24-10 loss to Denver. Green reinjured the foot while running a route and came off the field for perhaps the last time this season, slamming his helmet on the ground before leaving on a cart. ... Denver cornerback Chris Harris Jr. broke his lower right leg in the first quarter of the Broncos' win. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined with a cracked bone in his lower leg. He'll have more tests in Denver on Monday. ... Carolina tight end Greg Olsen limped off after reinjuring his right foot in the second quarter of the Panthers' 24-17 loss at Tampa Bay. Olsen said he ruptured his plantar fascia. It's his third injury to the same foot. ... Arizona left guard Mike Iupati was carted off the field in the third quarter with a knee injury against Green Bay. ... Cleveland rookie cornerback Denzel Ward left in the first half against Houston with a concussion.

        ---

        SPEAKING

''I was on the couch a year ago, so this is a lot better. I was in a lot of pain. So it's good for us to be winning ... This is what it's supposed to feel like. Honestly, this is how you dream it up.'' - Houston's J.J. Watt after the Texans extended their franchise record with a ninth straight win. Watt missed the last 11 games of last season with a broken leg.

        ---

''He's a bad boy. For him to be so young, running the ball, throwing the ball, he wants that moment of greatness. Fourth quarter being down, needing a touchdown, it's scary to see him grow from weeks and months ago.'' - Buffalo's LeSean McCoy on Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen, who set a franchise record for QBs with 135 yards rushing in a 21-17 loss at Miami.

        ---

''He's unlike anything I've ever seen.'' Rams quarterback Jared Goff on teammate Aaron Donald, who has an NFL-high 16+ sacks this season after two more in Los Angeles' 30-16 win at Detroit.

        • Packers fire coach Mike McCarthy
          December 2, 2018
          By The Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) The Green Bay Packers have fired coach Mike McCarthy and made offensive coordinator Joe Philbin the interim head coach.

The move announced by team president Mark Murphy came after a stunning 20-17 loss on Sunday to the Arizona Cardinals, dropping Green Bay to 4-7-1.

Murphy, in a statement, said the 2018 season ''has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately.''

Murphy said the process of hiring the next head coach would begin immediately.

McCarthy was in his 13th season as coach. The Packers won the Super Bowl under McCarthy in the 2010 season. He finishes with a record of 125-77-2.

''Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field,'' Murphy said.

But this is a third straight year in which Green Bay has had extended struggles.

In 2016, the Packers started 4-6, then won eight straight games to get to the NFC title game, losing to the Atlanta Falcons. Green Bay finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs in 2017, when Aaron Rodgers missed extensive time with a broken collarbone.

McCarthy shook up his coaching staff, including bringing Philbin back as offensive coordinator and hiring Mike Pettine to replace Dom Capers as defensive coordinator. Different problems emerged.

This year, Rodgers hurt his left knee in the season opener, though he is feeling better now. Receivers Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison have missed time with injuries. The same issues kept popping up for the offense, most glaringly, empty third downs and a lack of explosive plays.

Rodgers was asked after the game - but before McCarthy's firing was announced - how much blame offensive players should get if the Packers made a coaching change after the season.

''Yeah, a lot probably. We haven't played very well,'' Rodgers said. ''We all take part in the disappointments and the failures that we've had this season. We've had a number of opportunities. It's not like we're getting blown out in a bunch of games. We're in games.''

Cobb's return on Sunday didn't help, with the Packers just 3 of 14 on third downs.

''I hate to repeat myself, but it's applicable. ... We're not executing the right way,'' Rodgers said.

''It's poor throws, not on the same page with receivers, wrong depth, protection,'' he added. ''We all have a part in that and we've all picked our time to mess up a third down.''

The opening play of the fourth quarter was a perfect example of Green Bay's offensive struggles. Rodgers found Cobb for a 36-yard completion on third-and-11, but the play was wiped out by a holding penalty on right tackle Jason Spriggs.

Rodgers said his focus was getting his teammates to ''play with that pride'' and focus on the next four games.

''Yeah, I mean I'm not even thinking about that right now,'' Rodgers said when asked if he would have any role after the season with general manager Brian Gutekunst or Murphy about what direction they should go with the coaching staff.

The offensive players, Rodgers said, bear blame for whatever happens in the future.

''Yeah, a lot probably,'' he said. ''We haven't played very well.''

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

                  • Games to Watch - Week 8
                    December 3, 2018
                    By YouWager.eu

NBA Games to Watch - Week 7

After another week in the NBA, there have been some changes to report. The Toronto Raptors are tearing things up in the East and spent last week doubling their lead at the top to 4 games. Things remain incredibly tight in the West, and while the Golden State Warriors are a bit of a surprise in the #4 spot, they are still just 1 game out of the lead, which is currently being held by the Denver Nuggets.

Things could well change after this week’s set of games, so let’s take a look at a few match-ups that should be fun to watch with all the odds, props and futures for it sponsored by YouWager.eu.

Monday - Denver Nuggets at Toronto Raptors

What better way to start the week than with a game that sees the top team in the West hit the road to face the best team in East? At this stage of the season, the Raptors are actually 5 wins better off than Denver, although they have played a few more games. There was nothing between these two in their meetings last season, with the 2 games spilt and home courts advantage holding sway. The Raptors have won 3 of the last 4 match-ups with the Nuggets, and given that they are 10-2 at home, I like them to take this one, too.

Tuesday - Portland Trail Blazers at Dallas Mavericks

As we mentioned already, the race for playoff spots in the West is very tight in the early going, and while these two are currently occupying the #7 and #8 spots, respectively, the gap from the final playoff spot to the #1 is just 3 ½ games. The Trail Blazers having been slipping after a fast start, going just 3-7 in their last 10 games. Furthermore, they are now a game below .500 on the road and will be facing a Dallas team that currently owns a 9-2 record on home court. A close one here, but the slight nod to the Mavericks.

Wednedsay - San Antonio Spurs at LA Lakers

This is actually the first in a home and home series, with the match-up in San Antonio set for Friday night. These two have already hooked up twice this season, with the Spurs winning both of those games. The last meeting in LA was a bit of a thriller, with the Spurs needing OT to come away with a 143-142 win. This one may prove to be a little different, though. San Antonio have slipped below the playoff line after going 4-6 in their last 10 games, while the Lakers come into this week on a 3-game win streak. I’m on the Lakers here.

Thursday - Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz

It’s not very often that the road team has a definite edge in any game, but that would certainly appear to be the case with this one. The Rockets are a disappointing 11-11 on the season, putting together a .500 record both at home and away. The Jazz are languishing near the bottom of the West, but they could well be much higher if they could get their act together at home. They have a winning record on the road, but they are just 2-6 in their own building. I have to go with the Rockets despite their wobbly start to the season.

                      • Jokic triple-double leads Nuggets past Raptors 106-103
                        December 3, 2018
                        By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Nikola Jokic capped a triple-double with three free throws in the final seven seconds, Kyle Lowry missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Denver Nuggets overcame an injury to leading scorer Gary Harris to beat the Toronto Raptors 106-103 on Monday night.

Jokic made it 104-103 with a free throw with 7.0 seconds left, then hit two more foul shots with 5.6 seconds remaining before Lowry bounced a 26-footer off the rim.

Jokic had 23 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds, Jamal Murray scored 21 points, and Malik Beasley and Juan Hernangomez each scored 15 points for Denver. The Nuggets won their sixth straight and halted Toronto's winning streak at eight.

Kawhi Leonard scored 27 points, Serge Ibaka had 15 and Pascal Siakam 14 for the Raptors.

Harris scored three points in the opening quarter but did not play after the first because of a sore right hip. He came in averaging a team-high 17.3 points per game.

                        WARRIORS 128, HAWKS 111

ATLANTA (AP) - Stephen Curry scored 30 points, Kevin Durant had 28 and Klay Thompson chipped in with 27 as Golden State cruised past Atlanta, snapping a six-game losing streak on the road.

With Curry scoring 18 points in the opening quarter, this one was never in doubt.

Golden State raced to a 34-17 lead in the first 12 minutes - Curry outscored the Hawks by himself - and the defending NBA champions won for only the fourth time in 10 games.

The Warriors led 61-47 at halftime and stretched the margin as high as 24 points, sending the rebuilding Hawks to their third straight loss.

John Collins led Atlanta with 24 points, and Trae Young added 20.

                        CLIPPERS 129, PELICANS 126

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tobias Harris made two clutch free throws with 4.7 seconds left to close out a 27-point performance, and Los Angeles held off New Orleans.

Dino Gallinari scored 24 points, and Lou Williams topped off his 20-point night with a long, contested, off-balance jumper that gave the Clippers a 127-124 lead with 6.4 seconds remaining.

The Clippers chose to foul quickly on New Orleans' next possession, and Darius Miller made two free throws with 4.9 seconds to go. The Pelicans followed suit with a quick foul but had little choice but to attempt a 3 as time ran out after Harris made his late free throws. E'Twaun Moore wound up with the final shot, which caromed off the rim for a long rebound as time expired.

Julius Randle scored a career-high 37 points for New Orleans, which has dropped six of its last eight games.

                        THUNDER 110, PISTONS 83

DETROIT (AP) - Steven Adams scored 21 points, Russell Westbrook added 18 and Oklahoma City ended Detroit's five-game winning streak.

Paul George added 17 points for the Thunder, who are 15-3 since losing their first four games.

Blake Griffin led Detroit with 20 points, while Andre Drummond added 13.

Detroit came into the game having won six straight at home, including the first five games on its current homestand, but fell six points short of its previous season low.

Detroit's offense continued to struggle in the second half without Reggie Bullock, who left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury. The Thunder took a 71-51 lead midway through the third quarter and led by 28 at the end of the period. In the fourth, Oklahoma City led by as many as 35.

                        TIMBERWOLVES 103, ROCKETS 91

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns helped erase a 14-point halftime deficit to lift Minnesota over Houston.

Towns led Minnesota with 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Andrew Wiggins had 16 points. The Rockets led by as many as 19 in the first half before Minnesota stormed back to take the lead for good in the third quarter.

James Harden finished with 29 points, and Clint Capela added 24 for the Rockets. Houston went cold after halftime, scoring just nine points in the fourth quarter and 29 total in the second half.

Minnesota clamped down on defense in the third quarter while shooting 7 of 10 from 3-point range. Houston shot just 38.1 percent in the third quarter and connected on 2 of 11 from deep.

                        CAVALIERS 99, NETS 97

NEW YORK (AP) - Jordan Clarkson had 20 points and 11 rebounds, newcomer Alec Burks threw down a two-handed dunk with 3.2 seconds left in regulation and Cleveland avoided a fourth-quarter collapse against Brooklyn.

Tristan Thompson had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who snapped their four-game losing streak.

The Nets went on a 17-6 run in the fourth, tying it 97-all on rookie Rodion Kurucs' put-back layup with 18.9 seconds left. Burks drove past Spencer Dinwiddie for the dunk that sealed it.

D'Angelo Russell scored 28 points for Brooklyn, which has lost seven straight and nine of 11 overall, including their last six at home. Dinwiddie had 18 points off the bench.

                            **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                            13) Eagles 28, Redskins 13— Washington lost another QB; McCoy broke his leg, leaving Mark Sanchez as the #1 guy. Now they have to sign another QB to back Sanchez up. Adrian Peterson had a 90-yard TD run in this game, but ran for only 98 yards on nine carries.

With this result, Minnesota moves up to the #6 spot in NFC playoff race.

Eagles are 6-6, and can tie for first place in NFC East with win at Dallas Sunday.

                            12) With 14:10 left, Eagles led 14-13, scored a TD, then WENT FOR TWO, a genius move; if you make it, you’re two scores ahead. If you don’t make it, it you’re still up seven points and the other team will probably kick the PAT if they score a TD.

This was first time I can remember an NFL team doing this; Minnesota Gophers tried it 4-5 years ago, but didn’t score the two points.

                            11) Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder retired over the weekend; 79-year old Snyder coached K-State for 27 years, orchestrating one of the greatest rebuilding jobs in college football history— the Wildcats were TERRIBLE when he took over, but under Snyder, Kansas State had a 215-117-1 record, playing in 19 bowls in Snyder’s 27 seasons.

Administrators at K-State were considering dropping football down to I-AA before hiring Snyder, thats how pathetic their program was, but Father Time is unbeaten- Snyder was diagnosed with throat cancer three years ago, and now at age 79, has decided to step down, or it was decided for him. What a great career he had.

                            10) In the USA Today coaches’ poll for the top 25 college football teams, only two coaches didn’t vote for Alabama #1; Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi and Alabama’s Nick Saban.

With the playoff in place, Saban can now use that a motivational tool with his team. Poll itself doesn’t mean a damn thing.

                            9) 76ers are 9-2 since acquiring Jimmy Butler from Minnesota; Timberwolves are 8-3 since they made the trade, the rare case of a trade helping both teams.

                            8) Georgia didn’t make the college football playoff, but according to Las Vegas oddsmakers, they would be favored on a neutral field over Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

                            7) In 1983-84, Wayne Gretzky scored 13 unassisted goals; in the 35 years since then, no one else has scored more than 10 (Teemu Selanne, Rick Nash) in one season.

                            6) Lot of changes in the coaching profession:
                            — Chicago Bulls fired Fred Hoiberg, who figures to resurface in college ball.
                            — Louisville hired Appalachian State coach Scott Satterfield.
                            — UMass hired Florida State’s OC Walt Bell as its new coach.
                            — Auburn fired OC Chip Lindsey, who will probably join Les Miles at Kansas.
                            — Carolina Panthers fired two defensive assistants Monday; Panthers lost their last four games, are 6-6 and still have to play the Saints twice.

                            5) Wichita State has a basketball player named Ricky Torres who is a fascinating story; the kid dropped out of high school, got his GED later on and wound up going to a junior college at a school called Missouri State-West Plains- he scored 17.2 ppg for a 25-9 team, and caught the attention of Wichita coaches, with Shockers graduating lot of players last spring.

                            4) Seattle Mariners are taking their team apart; they traded Robinson Cano/Edwin Diaz to the Mets for Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak and three prospects, then traded Juan Segura, James Pazos and Juan Nicasio to the Phillies for Carlos Santana and JP Crawford.

Most analysts think the Mariners will trade Santana somewhere else, seeing how he is over 30 and makes $20M a year.

                            3) Couple of Big 14 conference games last night:
                            — Michigan State 90, Iowa 68— Hawkeyes are already 0-2 in conference.
                            — Wisconsin 69, Rutgers 64— Both home teams won, only Spartans covered.

                            2) Couple of big-name schools lost to low D-I teams in college basketball last night:
                            — Niagara 71, Pittsburgh 70
                            — Vermont 72, George Mason 67— Catamounts were a road favorite

                            1) In 1993, Dennis Rodman played in an NBA game where he grabbed 28 rebounds but didn’t score any points. That doesn’t seem possible, but it happened.

                              • Inside the Paint - Tuesday
                                Chris David

Chicago (5-19 SU, 11-13 ATS) at Indiana (13-10 SU, 10-12-1 ATS)

Indiana squeaked out a 107-105 win at Chicago on Nov. 2 but failed to cover as a seven-point road favorite and that’s been a common theme in this series. Going back to last season, the Pacers are 4-1 between the pair but the Bulls have gone 3-2 ATS. For the rematch, Indiana opened as a nine-point favorite and that number should be higher but the absence of Victor Oladipo (knee) is worth at least 2 points. He’s missed the last seven games for Indiana and the team has gone 3-4 without him.

The Pacers will be playing their first game at home after finishing a four-game West Coast road trip that saw them go 2-2. Indiana started with a pair of wins before dropping two in a row to the Lakers (104-96) and Kings (111-110).

Chicago enters this matchup on a six-game losing streak it has been hit or miss during this run, losing three games by single digits and three by 10-plus points and that includes a 121-105 loss to Houston on Saturday. The club just fired head coach Fred Hoiberg on Monday and I’m not sure if that change will help considering it lacks experience and depth. The Bulls have the third worst point differential (9.6) in the league and its only road wins (2-10 SU, 4-8 ATS) came against the Knicks and Hawks.

Indiana isn’t exactly super at home (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS) but it’s been a bully against sub .500 teams (11-3). Laying a big number on a team without its best player isn’t a great approach but I’d probably lean that way knowing the Pacers have the best scoring defense (102.7 PPG) in the league.

Orlando (11-12 SU, 14-9 ATS) at Miami (9-13 SU, 10-12 ATS)

Tight game expected in South Florida with the Heat (-2) listed as a short home favorite over the Magic and it’s hard to make a case for either team. Miami is coming off back-to-back home wins over the Pelicans and Jazz but it hasn’t won three in a row all season. Do you trust the Heat to get over the hump before they begin a six-game road trip? Miami hasn’t been good at home (5-8 SU, 5-8 ATS) this season and it’s been horrible in the division (1-6).

Orlando is far from a world beater but it’s been a profitable team to back and even though this is their sixth straight road game, they returned from the West Coast on Saturday with a 2-3 record. More importantly, they went 4-1 ATS and they were only embarrassed in one game which was a 112-87 decision at Denver. Including those results, the Magic have gone 5-6 SU and 8-3 ATS on the road.

The past two meetings between the pair were decided by a combined five points and that includes Orlando’s 104-101 opening night win over Miami as a 2 ½-point underdog. With the line being in the same neighborhood on Tuesday, you can see that the oddsmakers have adjusted their ratings up on Orlando and down on Miami.

Portland (13-10 SU, 11-12 ATS) at Dallas (11-10 SU, 14-7 ATS)

Another short number here with Dallas listed as a two-point home favorite and it almost looks like a trap. Bettors not following the NBA on a daily basis are probably surprised that Portland is catching points in this spot but you could argue that the number should be higher. The Trail Blazers have burned bettors with seven straight losses against the spread and it’s only 2-5 SU during this span. Meanwhile, Dallas has been one of the pleasant surprise stories of the season and it enters this game with an 8-2 record both SU and ATS over its last 10 games. Plus, the Mavericks have gone 9-2 both SU and ATS at home this season. The club stumbled out of the block when listed as a favorite but it has covered three straight games in that role and sits at 5-3 both SU and ATS overall. As an underdog, Portland is 3-5 overall but it has dropped four straight and those losses came by an average of 24 PPG. Last season, Portland won and covered two of the three meetings against Dallas and that included a split in the Lone Star State.

Sacramento (11-11 SU, 13-8-1 ATS) at Phoenix (4-19 SU, 8-15 ATS)

It’s rare to see the Kings as road favorites (-6), this being just the second time this season. In the first spot, Sacramento blasted Atlanta 146-115 on Nov. 1 as a 2 ½-point road favorite. Knowing Suns guard Devin Booker (hamstring) is listed as ‘doubtful’ for this game, it’s hard to imagine Phoenix keeping up with this Sacramento team that is full of confidence.

The Kings are the third fastest team in the league with 92 shots per game and even though they don’t hoist as much from distance, they’re shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point land and that’s ranked second in the league. The Suns are ranked 25th from beyond the arc and without Booker, that number certainly declines. Phoenix only has four wins but three of them came at home (3-8 SU) and they did manage to cover a couple of the losses (5-6 ATS).

Something has to give with the total (226) on this game knowing the Kings are 10-1 to the ‘over’ on the road but the Suns are 8-3 to the ‘under’ at home. Sacramento is averaging 118.9 PPG away from home and they’re close to 40 percent from downtown on the road as well. The Suns have struggled offensively (103 PPG) all season and missing Booker will likely play a factor.

San Antonio (11-12 SU, 11-12 ATS) at Utah (11-13 SU, 11-13 ATS)

Utah opened as a 5 ½-point favorite at BookMaker.eu and the number was pushed up to 7 as of Tuesday morning. Knowing the Jazz have been awful at home (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) and it will be playing its first game at home after a three-game East Coast road trip, can you justify backing them tonight? The Jazz went 2-1 both SU and ATS in the recent journey and while the loss to Miami (102-100) was tough, they needed to rally past the Nets before blowing out the Hornets.

While you could be hesitant to lean to the Jazz at home, do you feel confident backing a San Antonio squad that has gone 4-8 SU and 5-7 ATS away from home? And, two of those road wins came against the Hawks and Suns. Winning on the road for the Spurs used to be a staple for the franchise but they were poor last season (14-27) and that trend has carried over to this year. The main issue for the Spurs (112.3 PPG) has been defense and their numbers have been worse on the road (116.2 PPG).

The Jazz have certainly been a disappointment this season but their schedule has watched them play 19 of 24 games against teams above .500 and they’re 7-12 in those spots. Against losing clubs, which the Spurs are, they’re 4-1. In case you forgot, Utah started last season 17-24 before closing the second-half of the season 31-10 record and I would expect another run in the coming months.

The Jazz won three of the four encounters against the Spurs last season and they’ve taken the last three games played at Vivint Smart Home Arena but two of the wins came by four points or less. The ‘over’ has gone 8-2 in the last 10 games of this series but none of those totals were above 200 and Tuesday’s opener was 214 ½. Utah (15-9) and San Antonio (14-8) have both solid ‘over’ leans this season, especially the Jazz at home (7-1).
