14) RIP to former President George H. W. Bush, who passed away late Friday night at age 94. RIP, sir.

13) One thing to monitor that is a little tricky to do in next couple weeks; some college hoop transfers become eligible when the first semester at their school ends.

Butler gets Duke transfer Jordan Tucker eligible when the fall semester ends in a couple weeks- he is expected to improve the Bulldogs a lot, so have to follow guys like that and see who provides a boost to their team.

12) Big 14 is going with 20 conference games this season for first time, so everyone is playing two league games this weekend, which in my opinion is too early for conference games.

— Michigan State 78, Rutgers 67— Spartans were down 8 early, but held Rutgers to 30 points in second half and won going away before a hostile sellout crowd.
— Wisconsin 72, Iowa 66— Quality road win for the Badgers.

11) Thursday night’s Saint-Cowboy game got the best TV rating for any NFL Thursday night game ever; NFL TV ratings are up 5% this year, by the way.

10) The Jumbotron at the new Cowboys’ Stadium cost more money by itself than the entire Texas Stadium in Irving, where the Cowboys played before Jerry World was built.

9) Houston Cougars’ DT Ed Oliver will skip the Cougars’ bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft. Oliver hadn’t been playing that much recently anyway, and was seen as having some issues with Houston coach Major Applewhite.

8) TMZ published a video of Kansas City Chiefs’ RB Kareem Hunt involved in an incident in a hotel last February, and Friday night the Chiefs released Hunt, which has to be at least a little bit shocking to the team.

Hunt has run ball for 824 yards this year and scored 14 TD’s, via run or pass this season.

7) One thing I don’t need for Christmas is an article in a national publication about a 14-year old kid who “might” be the first pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Nothing like putting a ridiculous amount of pressure on a kid; find something more current to write about.

6) If you weren’t keeping score at home, the ACC-Big 14 challenge this week wound up in a 7-7 tie, while also providing 28 hours of mostly quality TV.

Right this second, I think Michigan is the best team in the country.

5) Mets non-tendered utility guy Wilmer Flores, which means he is a free agent, after being a popular Met for the last six years.

Big part of the Robinson Cano/Jay Bruce that is supposed to happen soon, is that it opens up a spot for prospect Peter Alonso to play 1B for the Mets. Will Jeff McNeil move to 3B now?

4) White Sox non-tendered DH Matt Davidson Friday; he hit .462 with 7 homers in seven games in Kansas City LY; in 116 games everywhere else, Davidson his .213 with 13 homers. Chicago also got rid of OF Avisail Garcia.

Maybe the Royals should sign Davidson?

3) The new ACC Network will start up on August 22, 2019. On August 29, the first conference football game will kick off on the new all-ACC platform when Georgia Tech visits Clemson for a Thursday night game. Hopefully, DirecTV will carry this channel; they do not carry the Pac-12 Network.

2) Kentucky Wildcats have 2nd-least experience of any college basketball team in the country, and they’ve won six games in a row since getting waxed by Duke in their opener, but Wildcats’ opponents are shooting 40.3% from the arc (#328).

Considering that their schedule to this point is rated #316, their defense better improve or SEC opponents will be raining 3’s in the Wildcats all winter.

1) I’m doing a survey about Christmas music; you’ll see the results in a couple weeks, but so far, I’ve gotten way more diverse opinions than I thought I would. No one song is dominating the “What is your favorite Christmas song?” question that I’m asking people.

One surprising thing: several people have said that they totally dislike Christmas music. One young lady replied, “Christmas music makes me want to slam my head into a door”

DETROIT (AP) Blake Griffin scored 26 points and the Detroit Pistons spoiled Stephen Curry's return, beating the Golden State Warriors 111-102 on Saturday night.
Curry returned after missing 11 games with a groin strain. He scored 27 points on 10-of-21 shooting, going 3 of 9 from 3-point range.

Andre Drummond had 16 points and 19 rebounds to help Detroit win its fifth straight.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Kawhi Leonard scored 34 points, Fred VanVleet added 15 and Toronto won its eighth straight game despite missing All-Star guard Kyle Lowry.

Danny Green and Pascal Siakam added 15 apiece to help the Raptors improv the NBA's best record to 20-4, reaching the 20-win mark quicker than at any time in their history. Toronto is a league-best 10-2 on the road.

Lowry missed his first game this season with an unspecified back injury. Raptors coach Nick Nurse didn't provide any details about Lowry's back other than to say it flared up earlier in the day

Jordan Clarkson scored 18 points, and Tristan Thompson had 18 points with 19 rebounds for the Cavs.

ROCKETS 121, BULLS 105

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden made six 3-pointers and scored 30 points to help Houston beat Chicago.

Clint Capela added 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Chris Paul had 12 points and tied a season high with 13 assists in his second game back after missing three with a sore hamstring.

Zach LaVine had 29 points for the Bulls.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Gordon Hayward had a season-high 30 points and added nine rebounds and eight assists, helping Boston beat Minnesota for its third straight victory.

Hayward scored 11 of Boston's final 15 points over the last 3 1/2 minutes of the game and made four of five shots from 3-point range. Kyrie Irving pitched in 21 points and nine assists, Jayson Tatum added 19 points and nine rebounds, and Marcus Morris had 16 points on 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range for the Celtics. They lost eight of 12 games before starting their streak.

Derrick Rose scored 26 points for the Timberwolves.

WASHINGTON (AP) - John Wall scored 30 points, Bradley Beal added 22 and Washington handed Brooklyn its sixth straight loss.

Markieff Morris rebounded from a 1-for-10 shooting night Friday in a loss at Philadelphia to score 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting. He had 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Allen Crabbe led Brooklyn with 14 points. The losing streak is the Nets' longest since an eight-game skid in February.

NEW YORK (AP) - Emmanuel Mudiay scored 28 points and New York outlasted Milwaukee in overtime.

Rookie forward Kevin Knox had a career-high 26 points, and Damyean Dotson and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 21 points each. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 19 rebounds for Milwaukee.

12) Alabama 35, Georgia 28— Going to be a very long 16-17 hours for the Georgia coaches, between the end of this game and seeing what four teams make the Final Four playoffs. If the Dawgs miss out on the playoff, then it’ll be a long winter for those coaches.

The hideous fake punt with 3:11 left wasn’t good; hope whoever called it has job security.

Jalen Hurts came off the bench and saved the day for the Crimson Tide; this is a kid with a 26-2 record as a starter who got benched LY but didn’t transfer, and didn’t whine- he just stayed the course and was ready when his name was called again. Good for him.

11) UAB 27, Middle Tennessee State 25— How has UAB coach Bill Clark not been scooped up by a big-money program? His Blazers went 8-5 LY, are 10-3 this year- they didn’t even field a team in 2015-16, when school tried to shut the program down for financial reasons.

What Clark has done at UAB is remarkable and certainly under-reported by national media.

Lakers rout Suns 120-96 for 3rd straight victory

LOS ANGELES (AP) Kyle Kuzma scored 23 points and LeBron James had 22 before both sat out the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' third home victory in four days, 120-96 over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

Brandon Ingram scored 15 points and JaVale McGee had 14 points and eight rebounds in three quarters of work for the Lakers. They have won 12 of 16 since their 2-5 start to James' first season on the West Coast.

Michael Beasley scored a season-high 14 points as the Lakers fell behind by 17 points in the first quarter, yet still made easy work of last-place Phoenix.

Richaun Holmes scored 15 points, and Josh Jackson and Trevor Ariza scored 13 apiece for the Suns. They have lost five straight to fall to 4-19.

Suns star Devin Booker scored six points before leaving with a strained hamstring in the second quarter. Booker hurt his leg while chasing a loose ball out of bounds, going immediately to the locker room. Booker missed three games in October after straining his hamstring in the Suns' first game against the Lakers. He was returning Sunday from a one-game absence due to an injured left toe after stubbing it on his hotel bed during the Suns' trip to Los Angeles to play the Clippers last Wednesday.

76ERS 103, GRIZZLIES 95

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jimmy Butler continued his run as Philadelphia's stretch-run shooter, scoring 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter against Memphis.

Ben Simmons, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds, ran up from behind on MarShon Brooks and poked the ball free for a steal. That led to a pair of free throws for Butler that made it 95-89. Butler buried a turnaround jumper for a 97-89 lead that sealed the win.

JJ Redick continued his late-career resurgence with 24 points for the Sixers, and Joel Embiid had 15 points and 14 rebounds. Mike Conley scored 21 points for Memphis.

The Sixers are 13-1 at home and 8-2 since acquiring Butler from Minnesota.

SPURS 131, TRAIL BLAZERS 118

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan had a season-high 36 points and San Antonio overcame a big game by Damian Lillard, rebounding from a pair of lopsided losses to beat Portland.

The Spurs held a practice Saturday morning following consecutive losses of 39 points and 31 points and the team responded with its highest point total in two weeks.

LaMarcus Aldridge added 29 points and Rudy Gay had 18 as the Spurs snapped a two-game skid. Lillard scored 37 points for Portland, and C.J. McCollum had 24.

PELICANS 119, HORNETS 109

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Anthony Davis had 36 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists to help New Orleans beat Charlotte.

Jrue Holiday added 19 points and eight assists. The Pelicans won for only the second time in seven games. Frank Kaminsky led the Hornets with a season-high 19 points, although he struggled with guarding Davis. Kemba Walker had 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting.

MAVERICKS 114, CLIPPERS 110

DALLAS (AP) - Harrison Barnes scored 30 points, and Dorian Finney-Smith tipped in a rebound with 35 seconds remaining to give Dallas the lead for good against Los Angeles.

Mavericks center DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 23 rebounds in his first game against his former team. Montrezl Harrell scored 23 points to lead the Clippers.

HEAT 102, JAZZ 100

MIAMI (AP) - Dwyane Wade made a pair of free throws with 3.2 seconds left, and Miami rallied from down 19 early to beat Utah.

Hassan Whiteside had 23 points and 20 rebounds for Miami, Josh Richardson and Kelly Olynyk had 16 points each, and Wade added 15. Ricky Rubio led Utah with 23 points.
