        • Doncic, Matthews lead Mavericks past Trail Blazers 111-102
          December 4, 2018
          By The Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) Luka Doncic scored 21 points and Wesley Matthews added 17 as the Dallas Mavericks won for the ninth time in 11 games, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 111-102 Tuesday night.

DeAndre Jordan added 12 points and 17 rebounds for Dallas, which won its eighth straight at home for the first time since its championship season of 2010-11.

Doncic, who missed his first game Sunday with a right hip strain, scored 14 in the second half and finished with nine rebounds.

Damian Lillard scored 25 of his 33 points in the second half as Portland tried, but failed, to rally from a deficit that was mostly double digits through almost all the first three quarters. Lillard and C.J. McCollum struggled from the field, going 17 for 42, and 4 for 15 from 3-point range.

          PACERS 96, BULLS 90

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Myles Turner matched his season high with 18 points and added 11 rebounds and five blocked shots as Indiana spoiled the debut of new Chicago coach Jim Boylen.

Darren Collison had 23 points and eight rebounds, Bojan Bogdanovic scored 14 points and Tyreke Evans finished with 10 for Indiana. Domantis Sabonis added nine points and 11 rebounds off the bench for the Pacers.

Lauri Markkanen led the Bulls with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Holiday, facing off against his brother, Indiana rookie Aaron Holiday, finished with 15 points. Chicago has lost seven straight games.

Boylan was named Bulls coach on Monday, taking over for the fired Fred Hoiberg, who was let go following a 5-19 start this season. Hoiberg had a 115-155 mark with one playoff appearance in three-plus seasons.

          MAGIC 105, HEAT 90

MIAMI (AP) - Aaron Gordon scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Nikola Vucevic finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Orlando beat Miami.

Terrence Ross added 19 off the bench for the Magic, who were 14 for 28 from 3-point range. Evan Fournier scored 13 and DJ Augustin had 11 for Orlando.

Justise Winslow scored 14 for Miami, which had won two straight - and still hasn't had a three-game winning streak this season. Kelly Olynyk scored 13, Hassan Whiteside had 12 and Dwyane Wade and James Johnson each added 11 for the Heat.

Whiteside left the Heat bench with 40.5 seconds left and walked to the locker room. He didn't play in the fourth quarter, and has been unhappy when that's occurred in the past.

          JAZZ 139, SPURS 105

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 20 points and Rudy Gobert had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Utah.

Kyle Korver scored 15 points in his first home game since he returned to the Jazz, and Derrick Favors added 14 points as Utah won for the first time at home in nearly a month. The Jazz beat Boston 123-115 on Nov. 9, but have been on the road much of the season and haven't found a rhythm at home.

Jakob Poeltl scored a career-high 20 points for the Spurs. DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge each scored 16 points for San Antonio, which fell to 1-13 when Aldridge fails to reach the 20-point mark.

          KINGS 122, SUNS 105

PHOENIX (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 20 points, De'Aaron Fox had 16 points and seven assists and Sacramento coasted past Phoenix.

Seven Kings scored in double figures, including Bogdan Bogdanovic off the bench with 14 points. Sacramento has won two straight after losing its previous three.

Rookie De'Anthony Melton led Phoenix with a career-high 21 points. Trevor Ariza and Josh Jackson scored 14 each for the Suns, who fell behind 36-9 after the first quarter. Phoenix has lost six straight and nine of 10.

            • Wednesday’s 6-pack

If the NFL Draft was today, the first six picks would be…….

              1) 49ers 2-10

              2) Raiders 2-10

              3) Jets 3-9

              4) Cardinals 3-9

              5) Lions 4-8

              6) Jets 4-8

              Tweet of the Day
“Ponder this… what Championship teams have are great leadership! Period! It’s not the offensive guru trend, it’s not the safe trend. Find somebody that is going to hold #12 and everybody in this building to a #LombardiStandard! Period! #losingsucks!”
Green Bay assistant coach Winston Moss, WHO WAS FIRED because of this tweet. Seriously, Green Bay fired the guy because of this tweet Tuesday.

              Wednesday’s quiz

When George H. W. Bush was President, who was the Vice President?

              Tuesday’s quiz
Ray Malavasi, Dick Vermeil and Mike Martz have coached the Rams in a Super Bowl.

              Monday’s quiz
Bill Callahan coached the Oakland Raiders last time they played in a Super Bowl.

              ********************

              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

              13) Washington Nationals signed lefty pitcher Patrick Corbin to a 6-year, $140M deal Tuesday; Corbin is 56-54 in his career- he was 14-8 in 2013, then missed the next year with an injury. He was 14-13 in ’17, 11-7 LY. He’s allowed 944 hits in 945.2 IP in his career.

Say this for Corbin; he was smart enough not to go to Philly, whose small ballpark isn’t good for a pitcher’s well-being, or his stats. Same thing for avoiding the American League and the DH.

              12) If you’re a free agent starting pitcher, why wouldn’t you sign with an NL team, so you don’t have to face the DH? Wouldn’t your stats automatically be a little better?

Also, if you’ve got a little kid who is just starting to play ball, shouldn’t he bat lefty? You’re two steps closer to first base; there is no advantage to batting right-handed.

              11) Urban Meyer, the most humorless person in America, stepped down as Ohio State’s football coach Tuesday and was replaced by Ryan Day, who will make $4.5M a year.

It is hard to believe that Meyer and Les Miles have the same job; both do their jobs well, but Meyer looks like he could have a stroke at any minute, while Miles can say funny things and appears to be an enjoyable person to talk to.

              10) USC named former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury as its new OC; Trojans have a long tradition of great running backs- are they going to run the Air Raid now?

              9) Seattle Mariners have traded ten guys in the last 28 days, and it sounds like that number is going to get a lot higher before spring training.

              8) Seattle’s baseball team is going in the ashcan for the next couple years, but the city was awarded an NHL expansion franchise Tuesday; the unnamed team will be the NHL’s 32nd franchise and it will begin play in 2021-22.

You can actually wager on what the team will be called; Totems is the current favorite, followed by Emeralds, then Sockeyes, Kraken or Rainiers.

              7) Steelers’ RB James Conner’s ankle injury is worse than first thought; he won’t be in the lineup for Pittsburgh in this week’s game at Oakland.

              6) We mentioned Adrian Peterson had a 90-yard TD run Monday night, but gained only 98 rushing yards for the game; he is only 2nd RB since 1950 to do that, joining Herschel Walker.

              5) Joey Chestnut holds the world record for eating shrimp cocktails; he ate 43 of them in eight minutes last year. Not sure who decided that should become a contest, but how is that good for you? I like eating as much as anyone, but speed eating ain’t my thing.

              4) Louisville’s football team was 1-11 against the spread this year, the worst record of any team in the country; UConn, New Mexico State and Georgia State were all 2-9-1.

              3) 106 undergraduates declared for the NFL Draft last year; as recently as 2012, only 64 kids came out early. This year’s number is expected to be right around 106 again.

              2) Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant, who bolted Clemson as soon as he got benched, transferred to Missouri, so he’ll remain a Tiger. Mizzou graduates QB Drew Lock after this season, so Bryant should step right in and start next year.

              1) Providence 100, Boston College 95 OT— This was a really fun game, and underscores the mistake BC made leaving the Big East for the ACC, though we know football was the reason that happened. Regional rivalries like this game should be played twice a year.

This was a hard fought, foul-filled couple of hours; Eagles were 36-45 on charity stripe, Friars were 23-34. Three Providence players fouled out.

                    • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
                      Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: 76ers at Raptors – 8:05 PM EST

The top two teams in the Atlantic division hook up in Toronto as the Raptors (20-5 SU, 12-13 ATS) had their eight-game winning streak halted by the Nuggets on Monday. Denver edged Toronto, 106-103 as seven-point underdogs, while the Raptors’ rally from a 13-point halftime deficit fell short. Kawhi Leonard led the Raptors with 27 points, but Toronto misfired on 30 three-point attempts, including a 2-of-13 effort by Leonard and Kyle Lowry from downtown.

The 76ers (17-8 SU, 11-14 ATS) have won 13 of 14 games at Wells Fargo Center, but the team has slipped to 4-7 on the highway. Philadelphia finished off a perfect 3-0 homestand on Sunday with a 103-95 victory over Memphis to cash as 6 ½-point favorites. The defense has yielded 98 points or less in each of the past three games, while finishing UNDER the total in all three wins. J.J. Redick and Jimmy Butler combined to score 45 points against Memphis, while Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid each recorded double-doubles.

Toronto destroyed Philadelphia in the first matchup this season at Scotiabank Arena, 129-112 as six-point favorites on October 30. The Raptors scorched the 76ers by hitting 51% of its field goal attempts, led by Leonard’s 31 points. This contest came prior to Philadelphia’s acquistion of Butler from Minnesota, as Embiid paced the 76ers with 31 points and 11 rebounds.

                      Finals Rematch

If LeBron James was still in Cleveland, there would be plenty of intrigue regarding tonight’s matchup between the Warriors and Cavaliers. These two teams have met in the NBA Finals in each of the past four seasons, but won’t happen again with James in Los Angeles. The Cavaliers (5-18 SU, 12-11 ATS) have expectedly taken a huge step back, but gone 3-4 the last seven games since a 2-14 start, while coming off a 99-97 victory at Brooklyn on Monday.

The Warriors (16-9 SU, 11-14 ATS) are getting healthy as Stephen Curry scored 30 points in his second game back from injury to lead Golden State to a 128-111 blowout of Atlanta as 10 ½-point road favorites. The loss snapped a six-game road losing streak for the defending champions, but the Warriors own a 5-2 mark away from Oracle Arena with Curry in the lineup, compared to an 0-5 ledger without him in away contests.

Cleveland has put together a nice run as an underdog at Quicken Loans Arena recently by covering in four of the last five opportunities. The Cavaliers have knocked off the Rockets and Hornets during this stretch, while hanging with the Lakers and Raptors in losses. Golden State captured all six matchups with Cleveland last season, while covering five times, as the Warriors were never listed a double-digit favorite at Quicken Loans Arena.

                      Speaking of LeBron

The Lakers (14-9 SU, 10-13 ATS) finish off their four-game homestand as they look to go 4-0 with a victory over the Spurs (11-13 SU, 11-13 ATS). Los Angeles won and covered in the first three wins over Indiana, Dallas, and Phoenix, while cashing the UNDER all three times. In Sunday’s 120-96 rout of the Suns, the Lakers erased an early 10-point deficit by blitzing Phoenix in the second quarter, 40-15, as Kyle Kuzma led L.A. with 23 points.

The Spurs travel to Staples Center with no rest after getting blasted at Utah last night, 139-105 as eight-point underdogs. San Antonio has lost three of its past four games by insane margins (39, 31, and 34), while Gregg Popovich’s squad is currently on an 8-1 run to the OVER. The Spurs have lost seven of nine times this season in the road underdog role, but one of those victories came at Staples Center against the Lakers in overtime back in late October, 143-142.

                      Back-to-Buck Losses?

Milwaukee (15-7 SU, 11-10-1 ATS) is the only team in the NBA that has yet to drop consecutive games this season. The Bucks fell in overtime to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Sunday in a 136-134 thriller as eight-point favorites. Milwaukee has failed to cover five straight contests, including four of those games as a favorite of eight or more. The Bucks own a perfect 6-0 record off a defeat, but the last two wins in this situation have come by six and three points.

The Pistons (13-8 SU, 12-9 ATS) invade Fiserv Forum for the first time as Detroit is coming off a solid 5-1 homestand, although it has was trounced in the final game, 110-83 to Oklahoma City on Monday. Out of the five wins, only two came against quality opponents (Golden State and Houston), while Detroit put together a 4-2 ATS mark. The Pistons have won three of the past four games away from Little Caesars Arena, while compiling a solid 6-1 ATS ledger in their last seven road contests. However, Detroit has dropped each of its past four meetings in Milwaukee, including a pair of four-point defeats last season.

                      Best in the West?

We all know the Warriors are still the team to beat in the Western Conference (and the NBA). However, the Clippers (16-7 SU, 15-8 ATS) are the current leaders of the Pacific division so far as Los Angeles faces another division leader tonight in Memphis. The Clippers finish a four-game road trip after holding off the Pelicans on Monday, 129-126 as Tobias Harris and Danilo Gallinari combined to score 51 points for Los Angeles.

The Grizzlies (13-9 SU, 13-9 ATS) have stumbled of late following a solid start by losing four of the past five games after winning consecutive contests. The most recent setback came at Philadelphia on Sunday, 103-95 as 6 ½-point underdogs, as the Grizzlies should be focused for tonight’s matchup. Memphis blew a late lead at Staples Center against the Clippers on November 23 as L.A. rallied for a 112-107 overtime triumph to barely cash as 4 ½-point favorites and hit the OVER of 210. The Clippers dropped the first two meetings with the Grizzlies last season, but have won each of the past three matchups.

                                Favorable matchup for DeRozan

The Los Angeles Lakers enter tonight's game with the San Antonio Spurs as one of the worst teams in the Association at defending opposing shooting guards. The Lakers allow an average of 24.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5 assists a contest to opposing two-guards.

This is a great matchup for DeMar DeRozan, who enters today averaging 24 points a game with 5.6 rebounds, and six assists. He is at his most efficient when aggressively attacking the rim and getting to the free throw line, where he is a career 82 percent shooter. Take Over his points, rebounds, and assists total.

                                Shutting down point guards

Point guard D.J. Augustin looks to be in a difficult matchup as his Orlando Magic take on a Nuggets defense allowing opposing point guards to score only 18.2 points on 39 percent shooting. For a player attempting only 7.7 shots per game, it will be difficult to put points up versus a stingy defense.

Last year, in the one meeting between these two where Augustin played, he shot one of six from the floor, including zero of four from beyond the arc in what ended up being a 14-point blowout. Expect similar results today and back the Under on his point total.

                                Bad offense meets good defense

The Nets enter today’s game against the Thunder ranked 26th in the Association in shooting percentage from the field. That number is even lower over their most recent three games at 40.5 percent. It will be difficult for them to put up points on a Thunder defense holding opponents to the second-best shooting percentage in the Association at 44.1. In addition, Oklahoma City is coming off a performance where it held Detroit to 33 percent shooting for the game.

Oklahoma City has not been lighting up the scoreboard this season, averaging 111 points a game, just a shade better than Brooklyn's 108.6. The Under is a good bet in this matchup at 221.

                                Lean Under

Detroit has been on fire winning seven of their last ten games, including five of the last six. The Pistons take on a well-rested Bucks team who played their last game on December 1st.

Detroit has historically struggled when playing Milwaukee winning only two of the last seven games, and only one of the last eight on the road versus the Bucks. Over their last three games in the head-to-head, the Pistons were held to 40.5 percent shooting. The average score between these two teams in those games was 101.6 to 96.6, for Detroit. With the Under hitting in seven of the last ten meetings in the head-to-head, take Under the total of 227.5.

The Hornets have only managed one win over their last eight road games, and head to Minnesota to take on the Timberwolves who have been great at home (10-4 SU).

The Timberwolves' Karl Anthony Towns' should be in for a big game versus a Hornets team surrendering 23.8 points per game on 52.9 percent shooting and 16.5 rebounds to opposing centers. With the Hornets giving up 12.1 offensive rebounds on the road, Towns should capitalize on extra chance opportunities and rack up the stats on put backs. Take his Over 38.5 on points, rebounds and assists.
