Game of the Night - Golden State at Milwaukee (PK'em, 240), ESPN, 9:35 ET

The Warriors still won’t have Draymond Green, so we’re not going to get a chance to see MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo deal with the best team in basketball’s top defender. That doesn’t mean Golden State doesn’t want this game against the Bucks (16-7 SU, 12-11 ATS) more badly than it has wanted to win any individual contest it has suited up for in this young season.

Head coach Steve Kerr won’t have to say much as his two-time defending champions take the floor for the first time ever at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, the franchise’s new downtown arena. Although the Warriors (17-9 SU, 12-14 ATS) opened a season-long five-game road trip in Toronto against the team with the NBA’s best record, Stephen Curry was held out for an extra few days of rest. That potential Finals preview will take place in Oakland next Wednesday and will likely include Green, who is nearing closer to a return from a toe injury. DeMarcus Cousins is practicing too and may make an appearance before Christmas, which would definitely be much earlier than I expected we’d see him make his Warriors debut.

Golden State’s team is in flux but that doesn’t mean Friday night’s clash with the Bucks isn’t personal. The final leg of the road trip is the one that the group has been pointing toward, a task made easier by the fact their old friends the Cavs are in shambles.

It’s probably killing Green not to play since regular-season games like tonight’s don’t come around often when you’ve won three titles in four years and already own the single-season wins record. However, most opponents don’t come into Oakland and figuratively throw their feet on the furniture while tagging up the walls and desecrating the locker room.

The Bucks handed the Warriors their first home loss in their final season at Oracle Arena.

Milwaukee now owns consecutive victories there after posting a 134-111 rout of the Warriors on Nov. 8 snapped their eight-game winning streak. The Bucks hung a 41-point third quarter on the champs, dominating the start of the second half the way Golden State typically does. Stephen Curry left with an adductor strain that would cost him weeks. Kerr said his team came out with “mindless intent,” hurting themselves with foul trouble. They were out-rebounded 46-38. The 134 points Golden State surrendered were the most the team has given up since Game 4 of the 2017 Finals.

The Bucks had lost eight of nine against the Warriors from Jan. 2014-18 before beating them last March and this time last month and will be looking to become the second Eastern Conference team to sweep Golden State since 2014, following Indiana’s lead from last season. The Central Division leaders bounced back form a 136-134 upset loss to the Knicks over the weekend by absolutely crushing second-place Detroit 115-92 on Wednesday, but the real news out of that one is that shooting guard Khris Middleton was apparently benched.

Middleton is having a fantastic season that will put him in the conversation for a spot as an All-Star reserve, averaging 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4 assists. He knocked down a game-winner to help close out November with a win over the Bulls but was benched due to a lack of effort and played just 19 minutes in the loss to New York.

After a film session where Budenholzer pointed out why Middleton was banished to the pine in favor of Sterling Brown, the two had reportedly cleared the air per Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel beat writer Matt Velazquez, but Middleton sat out the Pistons win due to “personal reasons.” He’s not listed on Friday’s injury report and will presumably participate.

Point guard Eric Bledsoe has been fantastic of late and has replaced Middleton as Antetokounmpo’s primary tag-team partner of late, so his matchup with Curry will be worth watching. Bledsoe led the Bucks with 26 points and six assists, while “Greek Freak” added 24 points. Middleton was a game-high plus-33 in that game and is invaluable in that he can defend Curry and Klay Thompson while serving as a viable threat on the other end more effectively than Malcolm Brogdon and Tony Snell. It’s important Milwaukee gets him right.

Even with Green sitting, Golden State should be in much better shape for this rematch than it was for the first meeting since Andre Iguodala has been a fixture in the lineup and was only just returning to the fold this time last month. Shaun Livingston was out with a sore foot and is also back contributing, providing stability for the second unit. Center Damian Jones (shoulder) is expected to remain sidelined, so look for Jonas Jerebko and Kevon Looney to remain in the starting lineup and Jarrett Bell to continue as the primary big man off the bench.

Milwaukee has rookie Dante DiVincenzo back after an injury and should have Middleton in the mix, but forward Ersan Ilyasova has been nursing a concussion, missing four of the last five. He’s questionable. Center John Henson has been out since mid-November due to wrist surgery, so the Bucks’ frontcourt depth is limited. We could very well see a lot of small ball here, but the total of 240 is certainly taking that into account. The first meeting produced the highest number of the season for Milwaukee, closing at 242. It’s Golden State’s second-largest total to date. The ‘over’ is 2-1 in Warriors games that close over 240.

Six of Milwaukee’s last nine games have gone ‘under.’ Six of the Warriors’ last seven have gone ‘over.’ Curry is averaging 33.0 points since returning from his groin injury, shooting 18-for-33 from 3-point range.

      Best of the Rest

      Philadelphia (-2.5/219) at Detroit, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Pistons will look to turn around a brutal run that has seen their strong start short-circuit in lopsided losses to Oklahoma City and Milwaukee by a combined margin of 50 points. This will be the first of two games in four nights for Detroit against Philadelphia, so the potential is there for some bad blood to develop between these potential Eastern Conference playoff rivals since most of the guys up front are alphas who thrive on running their mouths. The teams have already split a pair of contentious meetings this season. Andre Drummond landed in foul trouble in the most recent meeting on Nov. 3, playing just 21 minutes. He shot 6-for-20 in an Oct. 23 home win at Little Caesar’s Arena in which Blake Griffin scored 50 points in 133-132 OT win.

Joel Embiid comes off an awful effort in Wednesday night’s loss to Toronto and has surmised his recent form has been “trash,” so he’ll be looking to rebound and has averaged 36 points and 14 boards in the two games against the Pistons thus far. This will be Detroit’s first look at Jimmy Butler-infused Philly, so we’ll see how Griffin handles another active defender he’ll have to deal with. Starting shooting guard Rodney Bullock and backup point guard Ish Smith are considered doubtful, so Langston Galloway, Luke Kennard and veteran Jose Calderon are likely to play larger roles and starter Reggie Jackson should get a longer leash.

      Indiana at Orlando (-2/206.5), 7:05 p.m. ET:
Pacers-Magic games got spicier last season given the presence of Frank Vogel on Orlando’s sideline and the emergence of former draft picks Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis in Indiana, so it’s disappointing that this first meeting of the season will only feature one of them. Vogel reportedly turned down an assistant’s job in Houston and Oladipo is still on the mend with a sore knee, so only Sabonis’ improvement ties these teams together tonight. Both are playing reasonably well, although Indiana is relying on Darren Collison, Cory Joseph and Tyreke Evans to adequately replace Oladipo’s magic and have gotten spotty results. The Magic have seen Aaron Gordon return from injury to have a big week so far, while Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier have continued to produce offensively. Orlando has been vulnerable at home, winning just six of 13, while Indiana Is 7-6 on the road.

        Dominating the glass

The Hornets have been one of the worst teams in the Association defending the opposing center position surrendering an average of 24.6 points on 53.6 percent shooting, and 16.5 rebounds a game. This is a great spot for one of the league's best centers as Denver's Nikola Jokic comes to town. Jokic is scoring double figures in all but six games, and contributing an average of 16.5 points, 7.8 assists and 9.6 rebounds. Take Over his points, rebounds and assists total today of 36.5

        Forcing outside shooting

The Pacers are the top ranked team in the Association in opponent points in the paint per game allowing only 41.5 with that number substantially lower at home at 36.5. Along with defending inside well, the Pacers have been able to limit opposing centers’ all season allowing an average of 19.3 points per game, and only 2.8 assists a game.

This could be a tough matchup for Orlando's Nikola Vucevic who might struggle scoring inside. In what projects to be a low scoring game, take Under his points, rebounds and assists total of 35.5.

Winning ten straight in the head-to-head

The Raptors have won nine of their last 10 games overall and find themselves in a matchup they have historically dominated versus the Nets. In the head-to-head, the Raptors have won the last 10 straight meetings by an average score of 114.3-103.

The Nets have not been able to close games out late allowing for 54.8 second half points per game. They have blown eight double digit leads, and five fourth quarter meltdowns at home since November 13th.

Toronto enters today ranked fifth in the Association in second half points per game with 56.8 and should be able to pull away late. Take the Raptors to cover as 9-point favorites.

        Far too familiar foes

This is the fourth meeting the Lakers and Spurs already this season, and the second in two days. The Spurs had won with first two and looked to have the third locked up when the Spurs let the game slip away late as Lebron James dominated the fourth quarter scoring 14 points in the final four and a half minutes to rally for a 121-113 victory.

The Spurs have posted a 18-7 record over their last 25 games when playing Los Angeles and have won five of their most recent seven home meetings. The Spurs have always played their best ball at home, and today should be no different. Back San Antonio on the money line as small home favorites in what looks like it will close as a Pick.

        Expect offensive fireworks

There is no surprise why the Warriors versus Bucks have the highest total on the card by over 15 points as the league's top offenses meet up. The Bucks enter today averaging 121.1 points per contest, and the Warriors are scoring 116.8, with that number three points higher since Curry's return.

Milwaukee's Khris Middleton missed Wednesday's game due to personal reasons but is not listed on the injury report. Although he has been quiet recently, he is still averaging 18.5 points, 4.0 assists and 5.5 rebounds per contest. Look into taking Over his points, rebounds and assists total of 25.5.

            • Nets beat Raptors in OT to end 8-game skid
              December 7, 2018
              By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) D'Angelo Russell scored 29 points, including six in overtime, and the Brooklyn Nets snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating the Toronto Raptors 106-105 on Friday night.

Brooklyn picked the most unlikely way to end its skid, snapping a 12-game slide against Toronto with its first victory over the Raptors since April 3, 2015.

Jarrett Allen made the go-ahead basket for the Nets with a little more than a minute left, their only basket in overtime not made by Russell.

Kawhi Leonard scored 32 points for the Raptors, but Toronto couldn't get a look for him on its final possession and had to settle for Fred VanVleet's 3-pointer that just missed.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 17 points for Brooklyn.

Jonas Valanciunas added 24 points for the Raptors.

Blake Griffin had 31 points and 12 rebounds for Detroit, but the Pistons squandered their big third-quarter lead, as well as a six-point advantage in the fourth. The 76ers rested Embiid, who missed his first game of the season, but Detroit couldn't take advantage of the big man's absence.

Butler had 26 points in the second half.

                • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Six interesting college hoop rivalry games for Saturday:

                  — Xavier @ Cincinnati (-7)

                  — Wisconsin @ Marquette (even)

                  — Creighton @ Nebraska (-6)

                  — Georgetown @ Syracuse (-11)

                  — BYU (-3.5) @ Utah

                  — Pitt @ West Virginia (-11)

                  **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

                  13) With former basketball standout Kevon Looney in town with the Warriors to play the Bucks in Milwaukee Friday night, Milwaukee Hamilton HS held a ceremony at the school Thursday afternoon to retire Looney’s #5 jersey.

A surprising thing happened; the whole Warriors’ team showed up- Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, even coach Steve Kerr……all of them showed up to honor their teammate/friend.

Imagine being a kid at that school and seeing those guys in your gym? Pretty cool.

                  12) Titans 30, Jaguars 9— Game is 7-2 Tennessee in 2nd quarter; Jaguars have 4th-and-goal on the 2-yard line but instead of kicking a gimme field goal, they go for it with the backup QB and they don’t get it. Titans run next play for a 99-yard TD, and school is out.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about analytics; in these cases, if you’re Jacksonville you have to put points on the board in what was a tight, tense game, especially if you’re a losing team.

I’ll say it this way: the Jaguars tackled with a lot less enthusiasm once that 4th down play failed. Thats a nice way of saying they stopped trying as hard- they quit.

                  11) Washington Nationals have given out lot of deferred money in the past to pitchers Max Scherzer ($105M of $210M) and Stephen Strasburg ($70M of $175M), but only $10M of Patrick Corbin’s newly-signed $140M contract is deferred money.

                  10) Of the 353 D-I college basketball teams, 27 are coached by former NBA players.

                  9) Thru Week 13, best red zone teams, based on points/possession:
                  Chiefs 5.75, Bengals 5.73, Bills 5.70, Steelers 5.69

Worst red zone teams, based on ppp:
                  Jets 3.87, 49ers 4.21, Jaguars 4.22, Lions 4.40

                  8) Most drives that went into red zone this season:
                  Rams 67, Saints/Chiefs 55, Buccaneers 47

Fewest drives that went into red zone this season:
                  Cardinals 22, Bills/Dolphins 23, Jaguars 27

                  7) Three things about NFL officiating that bug me:

                  a) They call too damn many holding penalties.
                  b) They call way too many penalties on punts/kickoffs.
                  c) When they call pass interference, a 2nd official usually also throws a flag, to “sell the call”

                  6) Phoenix Suns are first team in the shot clock era (since 1955) to be held under 10 points in the first quarter of consecutive games.

                  5) Big 14 finished their first round of conference games this week; home favorites were 5-4 vs spread, road favorites were 3-2, making favorites 8-6 vs spread overall.

                  4) Here is why Washington Wizards will have a hard time trading John Wall: his contract is outrageous.

                  2019-20: $38,150,000
                  2019-20: $38,150,000
                  2020-21: $41,202,000
                  2021-22: $44,254,000
                  2022-23: $47,306,000 (player option)

Good luck getting someone to take that contract.

                  3) DeAndre Jordan was a 45% career free throw shooter before this season; he is shooting 75.8% this year (72-95).

Jordan is in his first year with the Dallas Mavericks, whose shooting coach is Peter Patton, who has been teaching basketball for 20+ years, including studying shooting under San Antonio Spurs’ assistant Chip Engelland. Coach Patton deserves a raise.

                  2) NBA trade:
                  — Cavaliers re-acquired G Matthew Dellavedova and F John Henson from the Bucks, along with a future 1st and 2nd-round draft pick.
                  — Milwaukee got veteran PG George Hill, who was with coach Budenholzer in San Antonio; they also got Jason Smith and a 2nd-round draft pick from Washington.
                  — Wizards acquired Sam Dekker from Cleveland.

                  1) Best wishes to Redskins’ QB Alex Smith, who has an infection in his broken leg following multiple surgeries on the leg last month. Get well soon.

Game of the Night: Wolves at Blazers – 10:00 PM EST

Minnesota and Portland both sit above .500 but are trailing surging Oklahoma City in the Northwest division. The Wolves (13-12 SU, 14-11 ATS) travel west for a four-game trip looking to improve on a dreadful 2-8 record away from Target Center. The good news is Minnesota has won each of its past two away contests, while going on a 6-1 SU/ATS run the last seven games. The Wolves rallied from a 15-point deficit on Wednesday to stun the Hornets, 121-104, while outscoring Charlotte, 35-18 in the fourth quarter.

The Blazers (14-11 SU, 12-13 ATS) snapped an eight-game ATS slide by routing the Suns on Thursday, 108-86 to easily cash as 12 ½-point home favorites. Portland limited an opponent to less than 100 points for the first time since holding Boston to 94 points on November 11. The Blazers jumped out to a 34-9 lead after one quarter and never looked back on Thursday as Damian Lillard led Portland with 25 points and C.J. McCollum sat out due to an ankle injury.

The home team has dominated this series in two matchups this season. Portland ripped an undermanned Minnesota squad at the Moda Center on November 4 as 5 ½-point favorites, 111-81, while the Wolves picked up revenge 12 days later, 112-96 at Target Center. The home squad owns a perfect 9-0 record the last nine meetings since March 2017 as the Wolves seek their first victory in Portland since April 2016.

The Kings (13-11 SU, 15-9 ATS) are proving that the first month was not a fluke. Sacramento picked up its seventh road win of the season on Friday in a 129-110 blowout of Cleveland to improve to 8-4 ATS in its past 12 games away from Golden 1 Center. The Kings shot a scorching 57% from the floor last night, led by De’Aaron Fox’s 30-point, 12-assist effort on 12-of-16 shooting from the field. Sacramento improved to 6-2 against the Eastern Conference as the Kings face another Eastern foe on Saturday.

On the second stop of a three-game road swing against Central division opponents, the Kings head to Indiana to face the Pacers (15-10 SU, 12-13 ATS) for the second time in seven days. Sacramento edged Indiana at home last Saturday, 111-110 to end a four-game skid to the Pacers. Indiana returns home after routing Orlando on Friday, 112-90 as four-point road underdogs. The Pacers have thrived on the second of a back-to-back this season by compiling a 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS record in four tries.

                      Purple Pain

The Lakers (15-10 SU, 10-14-1 ATS) entered San Antonio on a four-game winning streak last night, but exited with a loss following a horrific fourth quarter meltdown. Los Angeles led San Antonio by 10 points after three quarters, but the Spurs outscored the Lakers in the fourth, 44-21 to pick up a 133-120 victory. LeBron James posted 35 points and 11 assists, but the Lakers couldn’t pull off the home-and-home sweep of the Spurs after beating San Antonio by eight on Wednesday.

Los Angeles heads to Memphis as both teams are playing with no rest for their first matchup of the season. The Grizzlies (15-9 SU, 15-9 ATS) rallied past the Pelicans on Friday, 107-103 as five-point underdogs for their second straight win following a 1-4 stretch. Memphis and Los Angeles split its four-game series last season as three of those contests sailed OVER the total.

Just when the Rockets (11-13 SU, 9-15 ATS) had things figured out by starting November on an 8-2 run, the team with the NBA’s best record last season has slid to 2-6 the past eight games. The latest setback for Houston came at Utah in a playoff rematch on Thursday as the Rockets fell to the Jazz for the second time this season, 118-91 as 1 ½-point underdogs. The Rockets slipped to 1-5 in their past six games away from Toyota Center, while looking to avenge a blowout loss to Dallas.

The Mavericks (12-11 SU, 15-8 ATS) have been one of the best home teams in the league at 10-2, but one of their most resounding wins came at Houston last month, 128-108. Not only did the Mavericks easily cash as 5 ½-point underdogs, but pulled away in the fourth quarter thanks to veteran Devin Harris’ 20 points off the bench and a 20-point effort from standout rookie Luka Doncic. The Mavs have dropped four consecutive home meetings with the Rockets since 2016, but Dallas owns a terrific 5-1 SU/ATS mark as a home underdog this season.

                      New Yuck

The Nets (9-18 SU, 12-15 ATS) threw away a 23-point advantage in a last-second home loss to the Thunder on Wednesday. Brooklyn bounced back on Friday by edging Toronto in overtime, 106-105 as 8 ½-point underdogs for its second consecutive cover. Now, the Nets make the short trip to Madison Square Garden on Saturday looking to turn around an ugly 0-6 SU/ATS mark with no rest this season.

The Knicks (8-18 SU, 13-12-1 ATS) have dropped two straight since a thrilling home overtime victory over the Bucks last Saturday. New York’s defense was shredded at Boston in a 28-point setback on Thursday as the Celtics shot 53% from the floor and drilled 13 three-pointers. These two New York City rivals have split a pair of meetings this season with the home team winning each time. Since the start of last season, the Knicks have owned the Nets by capturing five of six meetings, while covering in all six instances.

                            • Luka Doncic helps Mavericks beat Rockets
                              December 8, 2018
                              By The Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) Luka Doncic shrugged off a rough shooting night with 11 straight points to erase an eight-point deficit late in the fourth quarter and the Dallas Mavericks went on to their ninth consecutive home victory, 107-104 over the Houston Rockets on Saturday.

Doncic was 3 of 13 before hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to get Dallas within two. After Chris Paul missed two free throws, Doncic hit a floater in the lane for a tie, then followed an air-ball 3 from James Harden with another from long range for a 105-102 lead. It was 26th lead change.

The Slovenian rookie had 21 points along with Wesley Matthews, who missed two free throws with a chance to put the game away in the final seconds. Eric Gordon missed a potential tying 3-pointer for Houston at the buzzer. Harden overcame foul trouble to finish with 35 points, and Paul had 23.

                              CAVALIERS 116, WIZARDS 101

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Collin Sexton matched a career high with 29 points, Tristan Thompson had 23 points and 19 rebounds and Cleveland beat Washington.

Wizards guard John Wall was held to a career low one point in 26 minutes - a free throw early in the third quarter with Cleveland holding a 74-48 lead. Wall returned after missing Washington's victory Wednesday night over Atlanta because of personal reasons.

The five-time All-Star, who didn't participate in the shootaround Saturday because he was under the weather, missed all five shots and had six assists. Wall was taken out late in the third quarter and didn't return. Bradley Beal scored 27 points for Washington.

CHICAGO (AP) - Jaylen Brown scored 23 points, Daniel Theis added a career-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Boston routed Chicago for its fifth straight victory.

The 56-point loss was the worst in Bulls' history, eclipsing a 53-point (127-74) defeat at Minnesota on Nov. 8, 2001.
