Game of the Night: Raptors at Magic – 7:05 PM EST

A pair of Eastern Conference division leaders meet up in Orlando tonight as one of these teams is not like the other. The expectations were high on the Raptors (13-4 SU, 9-8 ATS) coming into this season and Toronto is living up to them so far, but the Magic (9-8 SU, 9-8 ATS) were not predicted to be a factor in the mediocre Southeast division.

For the second consecutive season, Orlando has jumped out to a respectable start, and in Steve Clifford’s first season as head coach. The Magic have caught fire of late in spite of losing six of their first eight games as Orlando has rebounded with seven wins in their last nine trips to the court. There are several impressive victories by Orlando in this stretch, including wins over the Spurs, 76ers, and Lakers. In Sunday’s 131-117 rout of New York, Aaron Gordon paced the Magic with 31 points as Orlando started strong with a 44-point first quarter.

Toronto continues a four-game road trip after losing at Boston in overtime, followed by a 39-point blowout of the Bulls in Chicago on Saturday. The Raptors improved to 6-2 on the highway following the 122-83 rout at the United Center, as leading scorer Kawhi Leonard sat out and Kyle Lowry scored only eight points. The victory over the Bulls ended a three-game losing streak, while Toronto covered as a nine-point favorite or higher for the first time in six tries this season.

The Magic embark on a six-game road trip following tonight’s contest with the first three opponents being the Nuggets, Lakers, and Warriors. Toronto swept Orlando last season in the three-game set, including a pair of victories at Amway Center. The Magic seek their first win against the Raptors since February 2017 in a 102-94 triumph as five-point underdogs.

    Clipping Away

One of the most underappreciated stories in the NBA through the first month is the play of the Clippers. Los Angeles (11-5 SU, 10-6 ATS) is tied for first place atop the Pacific Division with Golden State in spite of no real star power. The Clippers enter tonight’s action on a five-game winning streak, including a pair of comeback victories on the road at Brooklyn and Atlanta as favorites. In Monday’s 127-119 triumph over the Hawks, the Clippers outscored Atlanta, 38-23 in the fourth quarter as Montrezl Harrell provided a spark off the bench with 25 points.

The Clippers seek the season sweep of the Wizards as L.A. travels to Washington. In the first matchup at Staples Center on October 28, the Clippers ripped the Wizards, 136-104, highlighted by a 41-point second quarter. Nine Clippers scored in double-figures that night, as L.A. beat Washington at Staples Center for the 11th straight season.

Washington (5-11 SU, 5-11 ATS) seemed to have produced some momentum following a three-game winning streak, but have gone backwards again after losing at home to Brooklyn and Portland. Sunday’s 119-109 setback to the Blazers wasn’t pretty as the Wizards trailed by 21 points heading into the fourth quarter, while falling to 2-5 at home. To make matters worse, Washington slipped to 1-7 against the Western Conference with the lone victory coming in overtime at Portland last month.

    Continuing on the Trail

Portland (11-5 SU, 11-5 ATS) dropped the first two games of its six-game swing at Los Angeles and Minnesota, but bounced back in a 119-109 victory at Washington on Sunday. Damian Lillard paced Portland with 40 points, the third time this season the All-Star guard has scored at least 40 in a road game. The pointspread has not mattered in Portland’s games this season, as the Blazers own an 8-2 SU/ATS mark in the role of a favorite.

The Blazers hit Madison Square Garden tonight to face a Knicks’ (4-13 SU, 7-9-1 ATS) squad that returns home following an 0-3 road trip. New York allowed 128, 129, and 131 points in all three contests, easily cashing the OVER in each defeat. The Knicks hit the highway again tomorrow to Boston, as New York last won at the Garden on October 29 against Brooklyn. The Blazers swept the Knicks last season, with both victories coming by double-digits, while each contest went UNDER the total.

    And Finally…

Both the Heat and Nets own losing records as they hook up for the second time in less than a week. Miami (6-10 SU, 6-10 ATS) has lost five of its past six contests, but the only win in this stretch came last Wednesday at Barclays Center, 120-107 as two-point favorites. The Heat jumped out to a 16-point lead after one quarter and never looked back as Goran Dragic scored 21 points for Miami. However, the Heat will be without Dragic for the next several games with a sore knee.

The Nets (7-10 SU, 8-9 ATS) own a 1-4 record in the past five games with the lone victory at Washington last Friday. The Clippers trailed by 13 points at Brooklyn heading to the fourth quarter on Saturday, but the Nets fell apart in the final 12 minutes by getting outscored, 37-22. The Nets have put together a respectable 6-4 ATS mark on the road, while three of four away wins have come against teams sitting at .500 or below.

    • According to reports, Dwyane Wade (personal) will return tonight at home against the Nets.
Wade has been absent for the last seven games and the Heat went 2-5 SU and ATS without him.

          • Wall, Beal help Wizards rally past Clips
            November 20, 2018
            By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) John Wall scored 30, Bradley Beal had 27 and Jeff Green added 20 as the Washington Wizards rallied from 24 points down to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 125-118 on Tuesday night.

Wall, Beal and Green each scored 10 in the fourth quarter as Washington outscored Los Angeles 39-23 to pull out the win.

The Clippers led by 24 midway through the second quarter, but the Wizards cut the lead to 95-86 after three quarters and took a 115-113 lead on Wall's layup with 2:33 to play.

Tobias Harris scored a season-high 29 points, Montrezl Harrell had 20, and Lou Williams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander each added 17 for the Clippers, who had won five straight. Williams was ejected with 34.5 seconds to play.

Washington, which improved to 6-11, won amid reports the team would listen to trade offers for Wall and Beal. There were also reports that players argued in practice and that Wall had been fined for disrespectful behavior toward coach Scott Brooks.

            RAPTORS 93, MAGIC 91

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Danny Green made a fade-away jumper with less than a second remaining to lift Toronto over Orlando.

Green caught Kyle Lowry's inbound pass with 2.3 seconds left, pulled up on the left side of the lane and hit a jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining. Orlando's Nikola Vucevic missed on a 67-foot heave as time expired.

Kawhi Leonard led Toronto with 18 points, and Pascal Siakam had 15. Serge Ibaka added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Green finished with 13.

Evan Fournier led the Magic with 27 points, 22 of them in the second half when he was about the only offense Orlando could generate. Aaron Gordon had 16 points, and Vucevic had 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Magic, who ended a three-game winning streak.

Fournier drove past Green for a tying dunk with 2.3 seconds left. The Raptors took a full timeout, and Green scored on the ensuing inbound.

            TRAIL BLAZERS 118, KNICKS 114

NEW YORK (AP) - CJ McCollum scored 31 points, Damian Lillard had 29 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and Portland beat New York.

Portland's star guards provided most of the offense in a game that was close most of the way, and Evan Turner helped the Trail Blazers finally pull it out when he put back a missed shot with Portland clinging to a two-point lead and 9.5 seconds remaining.

Jusuf Nurkic finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers, who have won two straight after dropping the first two games on their trip that now heads to its difficult conclusion. Portland plays Milwaukee on Wednesday and closes it at Golden State.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 32 points for the Knicks, who dropped their sixth straight. They were a bit better than the previous games of the skid, when they yielded 126.2 points per game, but not good enough to stop the early Western Conference leaders.

            NETS 104, HEAT 92

MIAMI (AP) - D'Angelo Russell scored 20 points, Jarrett Allen had 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Brooklyn added to Miami's misery at home.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 16 points for Brooklyn, which held the Heat to 36 percent shooting. Joe Harris and DeMarre Carroll each added 11 for the Nets and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored 10.

Hassan Whiteside had 21 points and 23 rebounds for Miami, which dropped its fifth straight at home - all on their ''Vice'' themed court. No Heat team has ever had a home losing streak of five or more games and went on to make the playoffs.

Josh Richardson scored 16 and Rodney McGruder finished with 15 for Miami. Justise Winslow added 10 and Dwyane Wade returned from a seven-game absence because of the birth of his daughter to score five points.

              • Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                13) This exchange happened on ESPN2’s telecast during the Arizona-Iowa State game Monday night at the Maui Classic.

Bill Walton: “Did your dad play for Jerry Tarkanian?”

Jason Benetti: “My dad was an air traffic controller.”

Walton: “How cool would it have been, though, if your dad had played for Jerry Tarkanian?”

                Benetti: Silence.

I enjoy listening to Walton a lot; it is a little bizarre at times, but always fun.

                12) How to get ahead in the salary cap era; have really productive players who are early in their career. Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes makes $1.2M, RB Kareem Hunt $584,000, WR Tyreek Hill $687,000. NFL stands for “Not For Long” when it comes to those salaries.

                11) In college football, assistant coaches in the press box have to take an elevator to get down to the locker room at halftime. Not all of the elevators are fast. In a UCLA game recently, Bruins’ coach Chip Kelly actually called a timeout to stall for time so his assistants would be in the locker room when the players got there. Thats called thinking of everything.

                10) In his last two games, Charlotte’s Kemba Walker scored 60 points against the 76ers, 43 against the Celtics.

                9) Why did the Redskins sign Mark Sanchez as their backup QB? Washington OC Matt Cavanaugh was Jets’ QB coach from ’09-’12. OL coach Bill Callahan was Jets’ OL Coach 2008-2011. Redskins’ QB coach Kevin O’Connell was once a backup QB for the Jets, so there is ton of familiarity for Sanchez to learn Washington’s system.

                8) It is Thanksgiving week and four NHL coaches have already been fired. Seems a little early to be firing coaches, but what do I know?

                7) Adrian Beltre retired this week, with 477 home runs in 21 years. Excellent career. Four Gold Gloves, four All-Star games.

                6) Kid on Iowa State wore different colored sneakers during their game with Illinois Tuesday; not sure why he did that, but I’m guessing he had another pair just like it in his locker. Am thinking the Nike people loved it when the kid was shooting free throws and the camera focused on his Nike sneakers for a few seconds. Free advertising.

                5) Why would anyone trade for JR Smith? When a player publicly announces he wants to jump ship from a losing team that was recently a winning team, it tells you one thing: “The guy isn’t loyal” Why would you give up a player/draft pick to acquire this guy?

Smith is 33, is in his 15th NBA season, a career 37.3% 3-point shooter. Shooting is and always will be marketable; Smith will find a home, but that coach will probably have more headaches.

                4) Ravens’ rookie QB Lamar Jackson ran the ball 27 times Sunday; since 1999, no QB has run the ball that many times in one game.

                3) Gonzaga 91, Arizona 74— Wildcats led this game by 13 early in 2nd half, but Zags went wild after Arizona’s Chase Jeter got his 4th foul, bitched at the ref and got a technical, which became his 5th foul, ending his night. Gonzaga-Duke play for the Maui title tonight.

                2) Lipscomb 73, TCU 64— Lipscomb is never on TV except maybe during Champ Week, but they’ve won 43 games the last two years, are 4-1 this year and were rated #115 in country prior to this upset of the Horned Frogs. Lipscomb was a 12.5-point underdog in this game.

                1) The more I think about it, the more Jared Goff is starting to remind me of Troy Aikman; he is surrounded by a lot of stars on his team, including his coach, but he just does his job and wins lot of games and is a quiet star. Nothing wrong with that; Aikman is a Hall of Famer, and I’m pretty sure he’s really rich.

Five Gold Gloves, over 3,100 hits, four All-Star games.

Game of the Night: Thunder at Warriors – 10:35 PM EST

The defending champion Warriors (12-6 SU, 8-10 ATS) are coming off a road trip to forget in Texas by dropping all three games. Golden State was wiped out at Houston in a Western Conference Finals rematch, followed by a close defeat at Dallas last Saturday. The Warriors fell behind the Spurs on Sunday and could never get over the hump in a 104-92 setback as three-point underdogs to slip to 0-5 ATS the past five contests.

Golden State continues to play without Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, as the Warriors welcome in the Thunder. Oklahoma City (10-6 SU, 10-6 ATS) finishes off a three-game road swing following a 10-point victory at Phoenix and a four-point defeat at Sacramento. In Monday’s setback to the Kings, Russell Westbrook returned to the Thunder lineup after missing six games with an ankle injury and scored 29 points, but OKC lost for only the second time in the last 12 contests.

The Warriors held off the Thunder on opening night at Oracle Arena, 108-100 as 12 ½-point favorites, even though Westbrook did not suit up for Oklahoma City. Golden State opened up as a one-point favorite for tonight’s contest, as the Warriors own an 0-5 ATS mark as a favorite of six points or fewer this season.

                        He’s Coming Home

On Sunday evening, LeBron James returned to Miami where he helped the Heat win two championships. In his first visit in a Lakers’ (9-7 SU, 6-10 ATS) uniform, James torched the Heat for 51 points in a 113-97 triumph for Los Angeles’ fifth win in six tries. Now, James makes his triumphant return to Cleveland for the first time since leaving the Cavaliers for Lakers in free agency in July.

Yes, it is obvious that Cleveland (2-13 SU, 7-8 ATS) was going to be worse without James, but this bad? Kevin Love has been sidelined since late October with a foot injury, while the only two victories for Cleveland have come against Atlanta and Charlotte at home. The Cavaliers had cashed the UNDER in seven straight games prior to Monday’s 113-102 defeat at Detroit on a 213 ½ total as Cleveland fell to 4-3 ATS as a ‘dog of eight points or more.

The last time James made his first appearance at Quicken Loans Arena in another uniform came in 2010 with the Heat. James scored 38 points to lead Miami to a 118-90 rout of Cleveland on that December night. The Lakers have failed to cash in two opportunities as a favorite of seven points or more this season as Los Angeles opened as a nine-point favorite this evening.

                        Keep on Buckin’

Milwaukee (12-4 SU, 10-5-1 ATS) is one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference so far, but the Bucks have needed several rallies at home of late. The Bucks wiped out a 20-point deficit to rout the Bulls last Friday, while erasing a 10-point halftime hole against a solid Denver squad in Monday’s 104-98 victory to pull off the season sweep of the Nuggets. Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with 29 points and 12 rebounds in spite of missing all six of his three-point attempts. The Bucks improved to 8-1 at their new home, the Fiserv Forum, while covering in seven of those wins.

It’s revenge mode for the Bucks, who were steamrolled at Portland (12-5 SU, 11-6 ATS) on November 6 in a 118-103 road setback. The victory by the Blazers ended a four-game skid to the Bucks dating back to 2016 as Portland looks to hand Milwaukee its second home defeat of the season. The Blazers are playing with no rest after edging the Knicks on Tuesday, 118-114 for their second straight win following a pair of losses to kick off their road trip. Portland owns a perfect 2-0 SU/ATS record on the second of a back-to-back, which includes blowout victories over Houston and Minnesota.

                        Perfect Ten?

The 76ers (12-7 SU, 8-11 ATS) are the only team remaining in the NBA that has yet to suffer a home defeat. Philadelphia has won all nine games played at Wells Fargo Center, coming off a 119-114 close-shave victory over Phoenix as 11 ½-point favorites on Monday. The 76ers have hit the OVER in each of their last three games, while the team has compiled a 3-1 mark since Jimmy Butler has been in the lineup following his trade from Minnesota.

Philadelphia welcomes in New Orleans as the Pelicans (10-7 SU, 8-9 ATS) look to improve on a 2-6 mark away from Smoothie King Center. The Pelicans start a seven-game stretch against Eastern Conference opponents, including the next three on the road. New Orleans’ roller-coaster season continues as the Pelicans are riding a 6-1 hot streak after losing six straight earlier this month. The Pelicans registered the OVER in all three home victories on their recent homestand, including in a 140-126 comeback triumph against the Spurs on Monday.

                        Target Practice

The Wolves (7-10 SU, 8-9 ATS) suffered only their second home loss in nine tries at Target Center in Sunday’s 100-87 setback to the Grizzlies. The defeat ended a three-game winning streak, as Minnesota was limited to 39% shooting from the floor and its lowest scoring output at home this season. The Wolves continued their impressive UNDER streak, which moved to 8-1 the last nine games, including three straight at Target Center.

The Nuggets (10-7 SU, 8-9 ATS) invade Minneapolis tonight trying to get on track after losing six of their past seven contests. Denver has dropped three consecutive games away from Pepsi Center, while being listed as an underdog for only the second time this season. Last season, the Nuggets lost three of four matchups with the Wolves, including a pair of overtime defeats at Target Center.

                        Southwest Showdown

The Grizzlies (11-5 SU, 11-5 ATS) continue their impressive start as they bring a four-game winning streak into San Antonio. Memphis pulled away from Dallas on Monday, 98-88 to improve to 7-1 at FedEx Forum this season, while winning for the sixth time in the past seven games overall. Mike Conley paced the Grizzlies with 28 points, while Marc Gasol posted a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds for Memphis.

The Spurs (8-8 SU, 8-8 ATS) have struggled to find their footing this season as San Antonio has lost six of its past eight games. San Antonio has performed better at home by owning a 6-2 mark, including recent victories over Golden State and Houston. The Spurs are seeing their lowest total of the season (200 ½), while allowing 95 points or less in three of their past four contests at AT&T Center. San Antonio swept the four-game series from Memphis last season, while winning each of the past six meetings with its division rival.

                              • LeBron awaits Cleveland reunion
                                November 20, 2018
                                By The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) The air was heavy, heaving with hatred.

And when LeBron James skipped onto the Quicken Loans Arena floor on Dec. 2, 2010, with his Miami teammates, scorned Cleveland fans aimed their fury at one of their own, the kid from Akron who was shaken by the experience.

James was profanely taunted, booed and mocked. It was vile. It was personal.

Eight years later, he'll feel loved.

James returns to Cleveland on Wednesday night for the first time since leaving as a free agent last summer and signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. He's coming back to a city still grappling with losing him again and wondering what might have been had the world's best all-around player stayed.

But unlike his previous comeback, the 33-year-old is coming home to be saluted for what he did during 11 years with the Cavaliers.

He revived a franchise, lifted an entire region and brought a championship.

''It's going to be fun,'' said Cavs forward Kyle Korver, who spent two seasons with James. ''LeBron had an incredible run in Cleveland. He touched Cleveland. He touched Akron. Us as individuals, we were all fortunate to get some time with him. I think hopefully he feels that. I think it's going to be positive overall, and it should be.''

Early in the game, the Cavs will show a video tribute of the franchise's career leader in virtually every statistical category.

The images will capture his stirring run in Cleveland - the buzzer-beating shots, the iconic chase-down block on Golden State's Andre Iguodala in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, James' teary reaction to winning an NBA title and the parade celebrating the city's first sports championship in 52 years.

There will also be reminders of his immense impact off the court, including the opening of his I Promise School in Akron, an elementary school for at-risk kids.

But he's keeping his perspective on this Thanksgiving week homecoming.

''I don't try to put too much into it,'' he said Sunday night in Miami after scoring 51 in a win over the Heat. ''I will see some familiar faces. I'll think about some of the good. I'll think about some of the bad. I'll think about some of the great times that I had with the franchise, obviously. And then once the tip-ball gets going, it'll be time to go to work.

''It'll be good to see some of my family that's going to come to the game, see some of my friends as well, and get the thing going.''

On that cold December night in 2010, James wasn't sure what to expect months after his ''taking my talents to South Beach'' announcement had incensed Cleveland fans, driving some to burn his jersey.

More frightening was the reception James received in his first game back.

Security was beefed up to unprecedented levels, but nothing could shield James from the vicious words. There were chants of ''Ak-ron hates you'' and ''Scott-ie Pipp-en'' and fans held up signs calling him a traitor, liar, sellout and worse while a national TV audience watched an ugly divorce played out in real time.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert had fueled the disdain in a letter written to Cleveland fans on the night James announced he was joining Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami.

But while the negativity crashed down upon him, James, as is usually the case, soared. He performed his pregame chalk-toss ritual and then dropped 38 points on the Cavs in Miami's 118-90 rout that galvanized the Heat and teased two future titles.

James passed on a chance to apologize for his leaving afterward, and there seemed to be no chance for reconciliation with Cleveland or its fans.

That, of course, changed four years later when he forgave Gilbert, came home and carried the Cavs to the title he had promised to deliver.

                                In 2010, he came back a villain. Now, he's a champion - Cleveland's own.

James said he isn't sure what kind of reaction he'll receive, but he's confident it won't be anything like before.

He's changed. The city is different, thanks in part to him. His second stint with the Cavs may have ended earlier than anyone in Cleveland wanted, but anger has been replaced by appreciation.

''I think whatever happens, happens,'' he said. ''But I will be in uniform, I will be there and I will be trying to get a victory. That's what's most important.''
