Clippers beat Grizzlies in matchup of early season surprises

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Jordan Clarkson scored 14 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, Rodney Hood had 25 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers stunned Philadelphia 121-112 on Friday night, ending the 76ers' 20-game home winning streak.

Philadelphia entered as the NBA's lone undefeated team at home at 10-0, while the Cavaliers were 0-8 on the road with the worst overall record in the league at 2-14.

Colin Sexton added 23 points, Cedi Osman had 20 and Tristan Thompson had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Joel Embiid had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, which had won four in a row overall.

RAPTORS 125, WIZARDS 107

TORONTO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Kyle Lowry scored 15 points and Toronto won its fourth straight game, beating Washington.

OG Anunoby scored 15 points and Fred VanVleet had 13 as Toronto posted its third straight win over the Wizards and improved its NBA-leading record to 16-4. The Raptors are 10-0 this season against teams with losing records.

Bradley Beal scored 20 points and Otto Porter Jr. had 17 for the Wizards.

THUNDER 109, HORNETS 104

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook had 30 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and Oklahoma City held off Charlotte.

Dennis Schroder - paired with Westbrook in the starting lineup for the first time this season - scored 23 points, and Paul George added 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Oklahoma City has won 12 of 14 after an 0-4 start.

Kemba Walker had 25 points and eight assists for Charlotte.

SUNS 116, BUCKS 114

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jamal Crawford made a jumper with 0.8 seconds left to lift Phoenix past Milwaukee.

Devin Booker had 29 points, and T.J. Warren 19 for Phoenix. The Suns won for just the second time in their last nine games and ended a six-game losing streak to the Bucks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 35 points for Milwaukee.

PISTONS 116, ROCKETS 111, OT

DETROIT (AP) - Reggie Jackson scored 19 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help Detroit beat Houston.

Blake Griffin scored 28 points, and Andre Drummond had 23 points and 20 rebounds. The Pistons have won five of seven.

James Harden scored 33 points for the Rockets, who had won five straight. Clint Capela had 29 points and 21 rebounds.

CELTICS 114, HAWKS 96

ATLANTA (AP) - Aron Baynes scored a season-high 16 points, Jayson Tatum added 14 and Boston beat Atlanta to snap a three-game skid.

Boston, which had lost seven of 10, used a 45-point first quarter to put it out of reach early. Jeremy Lin led Atlanta with 19 points, and Alex Len added 17.

CLIPPERS 112, GRIZZLIES 107

LOS ANGLES (AP) - Danilo Gallinari hit three free throws with 3 seconds left to tie it in regulation and finished with 20 points, Montrezl Harrell had 22 points and Los Angeles ended Memphis' five-game winning streak.

Marc Gasol led Memphis with 27 points and 13 rebounds, and rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. added 20 points. Mike Conley scored 19 points before fouling out with 2:51 left in regulation.

TIMBERWOLVES 112, NETS 102

NEW YORK (AP) - Derrick Rose scored 25 points, Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Minnesota beat Brooklyn.

Rose was 11 for 17 from the field, helping Minnesota get back on track after dropping two in a row. Taj Gibson had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Joe Harris and Spencer Dinwiddie had 18 points apiece for the Nets.

KNICKS 114, PELICANS 109

NEW YORK (AP) - Emmanuel Mudiay scored a season-high 27 points, rookie Alonzo Trier had a career-high 25, and New York rallied to beat New Orleans.

Trier made two free throws to put the Knicks ahead 104-103, and they held on to win consecutive games for the first time this season.

Anthony Davis had 33 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans.

NUGGETS 112, MAGIC 87

DENVER (AP) - Trey Lyles scored a season-high 22 points, Mason Plumlee had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Denver beat Orlando.

Nikola Jokic finished with 11 assists and 10 rebounds but fell four points shy of a triple-double. It was the third time this season Jokic missed out on a triple-double because he failed to score 10 or more points.

Terence Ross led Orlando with 18 points.

HEAT 103, BULLS 96

CHICAGO (AP) - Josh Richardson scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and Hassan Whiteside had 18 points and 10 rebounds to help Miami beat Chicago.

Bam Adebayo added 14 points and 13 rebounds, and the Heat held on after nearly squandering a 26-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Zach LaVine got the Bulls to 87-84 with 6:07 left, but Richardson had back-to-back baskets and Wayne Ellington answered with a 3. Richardson made his fifth 3 to put the Heat up 100-90 with two minutes to go. Justin Holiday had 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, and LaVine added 24 points.

SPURS 111, PACERS 100

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge had 33 points and 14 rebounds to lead San Antonio past Indiana.

DeMar DeRozan had 16 points and six assists, and Patty Mills added 15 points for the Spur. Bojan Bogdanovic had 21 points, and Domantas Sabonis had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Indiana.

13) Why the Redskins have a big problem; Alex Smith’s strength as a QB is “not losing” games; the last three years, Kansas City had a +45 turnover ratio (in 48 regular season games). This season, Washington’s turnover ratio was +12 in Smith’s ten starts.

A +57 turnover ratio in 58 NFL games is pretty damn strong.

But now Smith has a broken leg and Colt McCoy is Washington’s QB; a team that is built on good defense and protecting the ball on offense threw three INTs in Dallas Thursday, and now they’re not in first place anymore, though they’re still close.

What happens if all four teams in the NFC East wind up 8-8?

12) Oklahoma 59, West Virginia 56:
— Total on this game closed at 88, the highest total ever.
— How much do the defensive coordinators for these teams get paid?
— Seems like neither defense is very well-coordinated. Halftime score was 35-28.
— West Virginia gained 704 yards on 90 plays, but lost.
— Oklahoma gained 668 yards on only 65 plays.
— Sooners also scored two defensive TD’s.

Josh McCown will start again for the Jets; it will be his 75th career start, the first of which happened when Lamar Jackson was five years old.

9) Central Florida 38, South Florida 10— Knights remain unbeaten but they lost their QB McKenzie Milton with what appeared to be a severe leg injury.

8) Chicago Bears’ Eddie Jackson was a 4th round draft pick in 2017, out of Alabama; he’s scored five TD’s in his first 27 NFL games, and he’s a damn safety!!!

7) Baseball writers who plan on voting for David Ortiz for the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible better be voting for Edgar Martinez this year, too.

Career OPS of .933, 309 homers, seven All-Star Games. Martinez shouldn’t be penalized for playing his whole career in Seattle, out of the national spotlight.

6) Harold and Tina Ehrenberg, a couple from Mandeville, LA, were cleaning their house to get ready for hosting Thanksgiving dinner, when they found a lottery ticket they’d bought months earlier. The ticket turned out to be worth $1.8M; Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

5) Stanford’s basketball team scored 46-49 points in losing their first two games at the Battle for Atlantis; it was the first time since 1961 that Stanford scored less than 50 points in consecutive games. Cardinal rallied to beat Middle Tennessee 67-54 in the 7th place game Friday.

4) Marquette has a 6-8 freshman named Brendan Bailey who is the son of Thurl Bailey, the former NC State star who played 13 years in the NBA, scoring over 11,000 points.

3) Marquette 77, Louisville 74 OT— Every November I’m reminded of how much I dislike Jay Bilas as an ESPN analyst; its like the swallows returning to Capistrano. Bilas should be a referee supervisor, because thats about half of all his analysis- ripping the officials.

To me, listening to really good announcers is like listening to a couple of friends talk about a game; we’re not going to agree on everything, but you enjoy the debate. When Bilas is on a game, half the time I feel like I’m being scolded.

This was an interesting game, but not sure how good these teams are. Marquette is 77-61 in Wolciechowski’s 4+ years as coach (31-41 in Big East games), Louisville is rebuilding with Chris Mack taking over as they start the post-Pitino era.

2) North Carolina 94, UCLA 78— Bruins led by 5 at halftime, so not only did UCLA lose both its game in Las Vegas, they were outscored by 20+ points in a half in both games. Safe to say that the natives in Westwood are getting a little annoyed with the Steve Alford era.

1) Kent State 77, Vanderbilt 75— Commodores were a 12-point favorite and lost, but thats not the worst news; star freshman Darius Garland hurt his knee- the exact extent of the injury is not yet known, but the loss of the 6-2 NBA prospect would be a huge blow to Vandy’s hopes.

Durant's 44, Thompson's follow shot help Warriors edge Kings

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Klay Thompson put back his own miss with 5 seconds left, Kevin Durant scored a season-high 44 points, and the Golden State Warriors barely held off the Sacramento Kings 117-116 on Saturday night in a wild finish between the Northern California neighbors.

Durant converted two free throws with 1:27 left and also had 13 rebounds and seven assists, while Thompson wound up with 31 points - the second straight night the two each scored 30 or more.

Buddy Hield had 28 points on 12-for-21 shooting and seven rebounds. Rookie Marvin Bagley III contributed 20 points and a season-best 17 rebounds off the bench, but missed the first of two free throws with 1:08 remaining.

BUCKS 135, SPURS 129

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 34 points and 18 rebounds, rallying Milwaukee from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat San Antonio.

Antetokounmpo scored 14 points in the final period, hearing chants of ''MVP! MVP!'' each time he stepped to the free throw line. But he had plenty of help, with Malcolm Brogdon adding 23 points, Khris Middleton 21 and Eric Bledsoe finishing with 20 points and 10 assists.

DeMar DeRozan scored 34 points for the Spurs, who took a 106-95 lead with 11 minutes to play after a jumper by Rudy Gay.

But the Bucks roared back in a game featuring 26 lead changes, taking it for the final time when Antetokounmpo hit a pair of free throws with 2:44 left that made it 123-122.

MAVERICKS 113, CELTICS 104

DALLAS (AP) - J.J. Barea scored 20 points with a key 3-pointer that helped put Dallas in control in the fourth quarter, and the Mavericks won their sixth straight home game.

Harrison Barnes also had 20 points, teenage rookie Luka Doncic totaled 15 points and matched Barea with eight assists while starting at point guard with Dennis Smith Jr. sidelined by a wrist injury as the Mavericks (9-9) got back to .500 with their seventh win in nine games.

It's the latest Dallas has been .500 or better since the end of the 2015-16 season, and it's the first six-game home winning streak for the Mavericks in almost two years.

Jayson Tatum scored 21 points and Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart had 19 apiece for the Celtics, who followed a win with a loss in a back-to-back for the third straight time this season a night after winning in Atlanta.

CAVALIERS 117, ROCKETS 108

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Collin Sexton scored a season-high 29 points and Cleveland overcame 40 points by Houston's James Harden to win consecutive games for the first time this season.

Sexton, taken with the eighth pick in the draft, was 14 for 21 from the floor and hit several key baskets in the second half as the Cavaliers held off multiple runs from the Rockets.

Cleveland (4-14) won 121-112 in Philadelphia on Friday and rode that momentum against the Rockets, who played without star point guard Chris Paul.

Harden, playing the entire second half, was 14 for 30 from the floor with 13 assists. The reigning MVP scored 24 points in the first half, including 15 for the second straight night in the first quarter. Harden has scored at least 30 points in four consecutive games.

NUGGETS 105, THUNDER 98

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Jamal Murray scored 22 points to help Denver beat Oklahoma City.

Nikola Jokic and Trey Lyles each scored 16 points and Juancho Hernangomez added 15 for the Nuggets, who won their third straight.

Russell Westbrook had 16 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for his second triple-double of the season and the 106th of his career. Paul George had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Dennis Schroder added 18 points for the Thunder.

Oklahoma City shot just 35.9 percent from the field and was just 9 of 39 on 3-pointers. The Thunder would have had sole possession of the best record in the Western Conference with a win.

WIZARDS 124, PELICANS 114

WASHINGTON (AP) - Otto Porter Jr. scored a season-high 29 points, John Wall had 22 points and eight assists, and Washington beat New Orleans.

Austin Rivers had 12 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter for the Wizards, who shot a season-high 56.7 percent (51 of 90) from the floor in a game between the league's second- and third-worst defenses entering Saturday.

Bradley Beal also finished with 18, one of six Wizards to score in double figures on a night the Pelicans were without injured All-Star forward Anthony Davis.

Julius Randle tied a season high with 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. He started in place of Davis, who was ruled out during pregame warmups after straining his right hip in Friday's loss at the New York Knicks.

TIMBERWOLVES 111, BULLS 96

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns had 35 points and 22 rebounds, Derrick Rose scored 22 points off the bench and Minnesota pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Chicago.

Jeff Teague added 18 points for Minnesota, which won for the fifth time in seven games since trading Jimmy Butler to Philadelphia. Both the Timberwolves and Bulls were playing the second game of a back-to-back and their third game in four nights in a listless, sloppy affair.

Zach LaVine scored 28 points and Jabari Parker had 27, keeping their streak of 20-point games intact. Both players have reached 20 points in the past three games, but Chicago lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Justin Holiday had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls.

9) Baylor 35, Texas Tech 24— Bears are 6-6 and bowl eligible; Texas Tech is 5-7 and may be looking for a new head coach. Baylor coach Matt Rhule won at Temple, which says a lot; he is a very good coach.

Baylor was 32-7 from 2013-15, so the fanbase was getting spoiled before off-field issues sent the Bears into a tailspin. Rhule has pulled them out of the tailspin.

8) Florida 41, Florida State 14— Seminoles finish 5-7, their first losing season since 1976, the first time they’re not going bowling since 1981. Over last 11 years, FSU is 1-6 vs spread when they’re a home underdog.

Tar Heels finish a putrid season 2-9, which started with a lot of their players being suspended for selling the free Jordan Brand stuff they get from the school.

5) Southern Mississippi 39, UTEP 7— Eagles are the 78th I-A team to clinch at least a 6-6 record, so with 39 bowl games, there will be no 5-7 teams headed to bowls this season.

Tulane 29, Navy 28— Congrats to the Green Wave on going bowling for first time since 2013.

4) Central Michigan fired football coach John Bonamego this week, ending a cruddy year for the Chippewas. Earlier this season, Paulette Bonamego, the coach’s wife, was banned from Kelly/Shorts Stadium following an October 13 confrontation with CMU play-by-play broadcaster Don Chiodo in the press box.

Losing is often as hard on the coach’s family as it is on the coach.

3) Washington 28, Washington State 15— Huskies win Apple Cup for sixth year in a row, and wins a spot in next weekend’s Pac-12 title game.

2) University of Albany was supposed to be one of the best basketball teams in America East this winter, but both their returning senior guards bolted as graduate transfers, one to Villanova, one to Florida State. The grass always looks greener on someone else’s lawn.

As luck would have it, Villanova-Florida State play today in finals of the AdvoCare tournament at DisneyWorld in Orlando. Neither kid starts for his new team.
