Love could be out until "new year"

CLEVELAND (AP) Cavaliers All-Star forward Kevin Love may not be back until sometime in 2019 following foot surgery.

Love had an operation on Nov. 2 to relieve pain and pressure in his big left toe, which he injured in the club's preseason opener. At the time, the team said Love would be out at least six weeks and his status would be updated in ''approximately'' when that period ended.

On Tuesday, Love said in an interview on ESPN that he expects ''to be back sometime after the new year.'' Love said he's going to in a restrictive boot for two more weeks.

''There's just no telling at this time with the weight-bearing injury what it is going to be like moving forward,'' he said.

Love's loss was a devastating blow for the reeling and rebuilding Cavs, who are a league-worst 2-13 heading into Wednesday's game against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.

A five-time All-Star, Love signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension this summer.

Dwyane Wade returns to Heat

MIAMI (AP) Dwyane Wade is back with the Miami Heat.

Wade ended his paternity leave Tuesday night, checking in for the Heat midway through the first quarter of their game against the Brooklyn Nets. He said his wife and their daughter are doing well, which allowed him to feel comfortable resuming his season after a seven-game hiatus.

''I'm going to obviously miss them,'' Wade said. ''It was tough leaving my little girl and my wife, but I've got to get back to work and I'll see them again soon.''

Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union-Wade welcomed Kaavia James Union Wade into the world on Nov. 7. Wade had been in Los Angeles with them since then, and flew back to Miami on Monday.

His return is most certainly welcome in Miami. The Heat went 2-5 in his time away, falling to 6-10 this season entering the game against the Nets. They were playing Tuesday without guards Goran Dragic (knee), Tyler Johnson (hamstring) and Dion Waiters (ankle recovery from last season).

''There's a human element to this business and to the game and it is the most important thing,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. ''The connection, your spirit, your emotions, everybody getting on the same page, and just seeing Dwyane back here with the guys there was a tangible boost in the energy today in the shootaround.''

Wade is Miami's third-leading scorer this season, entering Tuesday at 14.3 points per game. He was in his best stretch of the season when he got the call that his daughter was coming a few weeks earlier than planned.

He said he felt the frustration level his team has gone through in the past couple weeks, and he tried to keep in touch via texts and phone calls. Wade kept up conditioning while in Los Angeles, but knows it'll take a little time to get back to the level of a few weeks ago.

''I was so excited for my daughter to come, but I was like, `Baby, you know, your dad was playing in a rhythm. You could have waited a little while,''' Wade said. ''I was just getting my legs under me, but great things happened to make me miss time, and now I'm back.''

The baby was born via a surrogate, which is one of the reasons why Wade felt taking a brief paternity leave was necessary.

Parents of surrogate-carried babies are told the first few days after the birth are critical to forging deep bonds with their child. Lots of skin-to-skin contact and talking to the baby helps with the bonding.

So Wade needed time, and the Heat supported the plan.

''So much of this league is mood of the team and confidence,'' Heat guard Josh Richardson said. ''With him back, we're definitely a lot more confident moving forward.''

Union-Wade - who revealed she had nine miscarriages in her 2017 book ''We're Going to Need More Wine'' - has taken time off work to bond with the new arrival. She's been filming an upcoming project in Los Angeles, and when she's back on the set, Kaavia James will be close by.

''She was working right up until we got the call,'' Wade said. ''When she goes back, my daughter will be going back to the set with her. Her trailer is fit for everything, the baby's safety, everything. So our baby will be there with her when she's at work.''

Wade strongly considered retirement during the offseason because of the baby's arrival, not making the decision to return until just before training camp in September. He questioned whether it was fair to his wife and their family to still be playing and traveling while raising a baby.

He also wondered if he could handle being away from his daughter for long stretches.

''We went through a lot to get here,'' Wade said. ''My family had to come first right now.''

Cavaliers, J.R. Smith parting ways

CLEVELAND (AP) J.R. Smith's bumpy-but-never-boring stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers is over.

The team said Tuesday that the disgruntled forward, who had requested to be traded earlier this season, ''will no longer be with team as the organization works with JR and his representation regarding his future.''

The Cavaliers will try to trade Smith. He will make $14.7 million this season, and $3.8 million of his $15.6 million salary for next season is guaranteed.

For now, the 33-year-old Smith is without a team and that seems to suit him just fine. He has been dismayed with his reduced role as the Cavaliers rebuild in their first season since LeBron James left for the second time as a free agent.

Smith's unhappiness had created another distraction in a stormy season for Cleveland, which is a league-worst 2-13 and has been blown out numerous times.

The Cavaliers fired coach Tyronn Lue last month following a 0-6 start, and the team has been riddled with injuries, the most prominent to All-Star forward Kevin Love, who remains out indefinitely following foot surgery.

Smith's departure comes a day before James makes his return to Cleveland for the first time with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Smith came to the Cavaliers in a trade from the New York Knicks in 2015. While his play has been inconsistent, he was a major contributor on Cleveland's 2016 championship team. He made two 3-pointers early in the second half of Game 7 as the Cavaliers rallied to win and become the first team in league history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit.

With Smith gone, the Cavaliers have just three players - Love, Tristan Thompson and Channing Frye - left from their title team.

Before the Cavs won the championship, Smith already had become a favorite with Cleveland fans. He seemed to endear himself further to many by remaining shirtless during the team's victory parade through the city's streets.

However, Smith's support eroded some during last year's Finals when he lost track of the score in Game 1 and dribbled out the final seconds of regulation, depriving the Cavaliers a chance to steal a win. Cleveland wound up losing in overtime and got swept by the Warriors.

Smith is averaging a career-low 6.7 points this season. He has averaged 10.3 points in 255 games with Cleveland over the past five seasons.

76ers' Fultz set to sit until exam

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Markelle Fultz won't play for the Philadelphia 76ers until his troublesome right shoulder is examined by a specialist on Monday.

Fultz, the No. 1 pick of the 2017 draft, added another curious chapter to an injury-plagued career when his representatives informed the Sixers on Tuesday that the guard would be examined next week.

Fultz played just 14 games last season because of a shoulder injury that seems to have affected his shooting mechanics and made him one of the more scrutinized players in the NBA. Fultz lost his starting spot in the rotation when the Sixers traded for Jimmy Butler.

He seemed to lose his backup point spot when coach Brett Brown gave TJ McConnell the bulk of the minutes in a win over Phoenix on Monday.

''This news about his shoulder, it did catch me off guard,'' coach Brett Brown said. ''If it's that real, and he needs to go see a further sort of consultation, then we support him.''

Sixers general manager Elton Brand said Fultz's agent Raymond Brothers told him the guard wouldn't practice or play until the results of Monday's examination. Brand said he was told Monday was the earliest Fultz could see a specialist.

Brand said he was unaware if anything was wrong with Fultz's shoulder. Fultz had said this month he wasn't bothered by the shoulder.

''There's nothing that we saw medically that didn't allow him to play,'' Brand said. ''He played last night. He played two nights ago. Ever since Jimmy Butler came and he wasn't starting, I felt he played pretty well. I was proud of the way he bounced back from a lot of things.''

The 20-year-old Fultz is averaging 8.2 points, 3.1 assists, 3.7 rebounds and shooting 42 percent from the field.

''We just want the best for him,'' Brand said.

The Sixers are 9-0 at home and in fourth place overall in the Eastern Conference.

LeBron leads Lakers comeback in return

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James felt only love at home.

Making his first trip back to Cleveland since leaving for the second time as a free agent, James was welcomed like a hero Wednesday night and rallied the Los Angeles Lakers to a 109-105 victory over the Cavaliers, who played an inspired game against their former teammate but couldn't stop him when it mattered most.

James finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists. He also scored or assisted on 11 straight points to help the Lakers overcome a 99-91 deficit in the fourth quarter.

The Cavs had a chance to tie late, but Kyle Korver missed a wide-open 3-pointer with 17 seconds left, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made four free throws in the final 15 to seal it.

The NBA-worst Cavs didn't roll over against James and played one of their best games this season. They seemed in control up 99-91 before James, as he did some many times for Cleveland. Jordan Clarkson had 20 points for Cleveland.

ROCKETS 126, PISTONS 124

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden scored a season-high 43 points, Clint Capela added 27 and Houston held off Detroit for its fifth straight victory.

Houston has won eight of its last 10 after winning just one of its first six.

Blake Griffin led the Pistons with 37 points and 11 rebounds Andre Drummond added 20 points with 11 rebounds for the Pistons.

The Rockets led by 14 with about five minutes left, but Griffin made five 3-pointers that helped Detroit cut the lead to four points with about 90 seconds left. Houston struggled to contain Griffin late after defensive stopper P.J. Tucker was ejected in the third quarter after he received two technical fouls for arguing with officials.

76ERS 121, PELICANS 120

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid had 31 points and 19 rebounds and Philadelphia beat New Orleans after Anthony Davis missed the third of three free throws with 2.5 seconds left.

The 76ers are 10-0 at home. They looked in control, up nine points with just under 2 1/2 minutes to play, before a late surge by the Pelicans.

Embiid fouled Davis on a 3-point attempt, and Davis made the first two free throws before the third one went in and out. Davis grabbed the rebound, but his wild attempt at a winning shot was off the mark.

Davis finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds in a matchup between two of the NBA's top big men with Embiid.

KNICKS 117, CELTICS 109

BOSTON (AP) - Trey Burke scored 29 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. had 21 and New York beat Boston to snap a six-game losing streak.

Noah Vonleh had 16 points and Enes Kanter finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. New York won for the fifth time in 19 games.

Kyrie Irving led the Celtics with 22 points and 13 assists, and Marcus Morris had 21 points. Boston has lost three straight to fall to 9-9.

HORNETS 127, PACERS 109

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Jeremy Lamb scored 21 points, NBA scoring leader Kemba Walker had 16 points and a season-high 11 assists and Charlotte beat Indiana.

Walker scored 103 points in his previous two games, including 60 against Philadelphia on Saturday night. But Walker only attempted 10 shots, instead taking advantage of double teams to find teammates for open looks. Charlotte shot 62 percent from 3-point range, making a season-high 18 of 29 shots from beyond the arc.

Bojan Bogdanovic had 20 points for Indiana.

BUCKS 143, TRAIL BLAZERS 100

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo matched his season high with 33 points and finished an assist short of a triple-double in three quarters to help Milwaukee rout Portland.

Antetokounmpo added 16 rebounds and nine assists in 30 minutes. CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard each had 22 points for the Trail Blazers.

GRIZZLIES 104, SPURS 103

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Mike Conley had 30 points, Marc Gasol hit two free throws with 0.7 seconds left and Memphis beat San Antonio.

San Antonio's DeMar DeRozan had 24 points, including a fadeaway 15-footer in the left corner with 1.2 seconds remaining for a 103-102 lead.

Gasol drew a foul from Rudy Gay on the inbound pass and hit both free throws, and LaMarcus Aldridge missed a 3-point try at the buzzer.

Gay finished with 21 points, and Aldridge had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

CHICAGO (AP) - Jabari Parker had 20 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, and Chicago beat Phoenix to stop a four-game slide.

Chicago shot a season-high 56.8 percent in just its third win in its last 12 games. Zach LaVine scored 29 points after missing Saturday night's loss to Toronto due to an illness, and Ryan Arcidiacono finished with 14.

Phoenix lost for the seventh time in its last eight games. Devin Booker scored 23 points, T.J. Warren had 21 and Deandre Ayton added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

RAPTORS 124, HAWKS 108

ATLANTA (AP) - Kyle Lowry scored 21 points in his first triple-double of the season and Toronto beat Atlanta.

Lowry had 17 assists and 12 rebounds for his 13th career triple-double.

Vince Carter's dunk for the Hawks with less than a second remaining pushed him past 25,000 career points. He became the 22nd NBA player to reach the milestone.

MAVERICKS 119, NETS 113

DALLAS (AP) - Harrison Barnes scored a season-high 28 points, Devin Harris broke a fourth-quarter tie with eight straight points and Dallas beat Brooklyn.

Teenage rookie Luka Doncic had 21 points and nine rebounds to help the Mavericks win their fifth consecutive home game. Allen Crabbe scored a season-high 27 points for the Nets.

KINGS 119, JAZZ 110

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Willie Cauley-Stein scored 23 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic had 18 to help Sacramento beat Utah.

Nemanja Bjelica made a 3-pointer with 4:56 remaining to finish a 16-1 run that turned a two-point game into a 105-88 lead. Bjelica had 18 points, and De'Aaron Fox added 17 points and 13 assists. Mitchell scored 35 points for Utah.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Paul Millsap had 25 points, Jamal Murray added 18 and Denver held off Minnesota.

13) Bears 23, Lions 16— Chicago won its last five games, beating Detroit twice in 12 days. Chase Daniel won his first NFL start in four years, and only the third of his 9-year career.

Chicago now has 29 takeaways, most in the NFL, and a +14 turnover ratio.

12) Cowboys 31, Redskins 23— Three weeks ago, Dallas was 3-5 and pundits were calling for coach Jason Garrett’s head. Now Dallas is in first place in the NFC East, a division that figures to have a wild finish. What if all four teams wound up 8-8?

11) Saints 31, Falcons 17— New Orleans won its last 10 games, covered its last nine. Some pundits are already awarding them the Lombardi Trophy.

Falcons have a running back named Ito Smith, a rookie from Southern Miss, and apparently, he was named after Judge Lance Ito, the judge who presided over OJ Simpson’s murder trial.

One of his parents thought young Mr Smith resembled Judge Ito right after he was born, so he was named after the then-famous judge, who was on TV almost every day for about a year.

10) Its funny, you hear about these college basketball teams who take international trips in the summer and how much it helps them the following season, which it usually does.

Except when it doesn’t; few years ago, a team I can’t remember who (USC maybe??) lost its point guard with a torn ACL on its international trip during the late summer and their season that winter was a total disaster. Goes to show you; there are no guarantees in life.

9) Basketball referee Ed Corbett worked the Maui Classic this week, then retired from being a basketball official— pretty good way to go out. Corbett was a D-I referee for 33 years.

8) Referee Ted Valentine, often known as TV Teddy for his tendency to attract attention while he referees, also worked the Maui Classic Monday-Wednesday, but then on Thursday, he was at Cal State-Fullerton working the Wooden Legacy tournament.

The best college basketball refs work 70-80 games a year from November-March and rake in a six-figure income from a job that usually isn’t their primary source of income.

4) At the Advocate tournament at Disney in Florida, all four favorites won/covered in the first round, which is pretty unusual. Also means there were four lousy games.

3) Mississippi State 35, Ole Miss 3— Rebels lost their last five games, finished their season 5-7, on a night where a fracas broke out and every player on both teams was assessed a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Never saw that before.

2) North Carolina had a football game cancelled by weather on September 15; they’re not going to make the game up, for financial reasons.

Turns out the Tar Heels had game cancellation insurance worth $1.6M; with low fan interest in another game, only a few teams available to play, UNC chose not to pay to add a week to its second consecutive losing season- they weren’t going to a bowl game either way.

1) The bus carrying U of Washington band rolled over last night, on its way to the Huskies’ rivalry game with Washington State. Luckily, no serious injuries were reported.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Kevin Durant scored 32 points, Klay Thompson had 31 and the Golden State Warriors snapped their worst losing streak since early 2013 at four games, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 125-97 on Friday night.

Durant was 13 of 21 from the field, dished out eight assists, had seven rebounds and three of his team's 11 blocks. Thompson hit five of his first seven shots and grabbed a season-high eight boards for the undermanned two-time defending champions.

Two-time MVP Stephen Curry, in a car accident earlier in the day that left him uninjured, sat out again with a strained left groin and fellow All-Star Draymond Green also remained sidelined because of a sprained right toe.

Jusuf Nurkic had 22 points and eight rebounds for Portland on a night Damian Lillard shot just 9 of 24 for 23 points and eight assists. CJ McCollum added 19 points and five assists.

Golden State started the second with a 22-5 burst to build a 46-32 lead midway through the quarter. Durant's driving dunk and three-point play 2:01 before halftime put his team up 59-40.

Coach Steve Kerr knew that once his team returned to better offensive execution - solid screens, sharp cuts, penetrating to the basket - it would lead to more open shots the Warriors hadn't been getting during this recent funk.

The four-game skid was the longest under fifth-year coach Kerr and Golden State hadn't lost more than that consecutively since dropping six straight from Feb. 5-19, 2013.

Quinn Cook, playing in Curry's place, scored 19 points with five 3-pointers as the Warriors went 17 for 32 from deep.

Two of the top teams in the Western Conference were both coming off embarrassing defeats two days earlier: Golden State a 123-95 loss to Oklahoma City and Portland 143-100 at Milwaukee in which the Blazers never led.

The Warriors have won the last eight with the Blazers at home but had lost two straight overall.

CURRY CAR CRASH

Curry was driving a black Porsche on Friday morning en route to work when the driver of a Lexus lost control and struck his car. California Highway Patrol Officer Herman Baza said Curry stopped in the center median and as he waited for officers to arrive, another sedan lost control and rear-ended his Porsche. Baza said no one was injured or arrested and that rain was a factor in the crash.

Kerr said his point guard was ''a little shaken up'' from the scare and ''thankfully nobody was hurt and Steph's doing fine.''

The coach then said playfully: ''I think he has another car that he can drive, too. I think he's going to be OK. Or he can borrow one from somebody else.''
