      • Wednesday’s 6-pack

If the NFL Draft was today (it isn’t), this would be the draft order:

        1) 49ers 2-9

        2) Cardinals 2-9

        3) Raiders 2-9

        4) Jets 3-8

        5) Giants 3-8

        6) Jaguars 3-8

        Quote of the Day
“Listen, here’s the thing. If you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker.”
        Mike McDermott in Rounders

        Wednesday’s quiz
Where was Mike Krzyzewski the basketball coach before moving to Duke?

        Tuesday’s quiz
Tennessee Titans were the Houston Oilers before moving to Tennessee.

        Monday’s quiz
Mike Shula was the football coach at Alabama before Nick Saban.

Wednesday’s 2nd list of 13: Catching up on college hoop

If you spent all of November watching football and you missed the start of college basketball season, here is some of what you missed…….

        13) Gonzaga 89, Duke 87— Finals of Maui Classic was a terrific game; Duke led 2-0, but that was it- they were down by 16 with 15:54 left, before tying game late. Zags made 10-19 on the arc, and they were playing without Tillie, who made 47.9% of his 3’s last year.

        12) Virginia 53, Wisconsin 46— Predictably slow-paced game (58 possessions) in final of the Battle for Atlantis. Teams combined to go 6-28 on arc; Badgers only got to foul line three times and forced only five turnovers (-8). If you bet the under, this was a rocking chair game.

        11) Kansas 87, Tennessee 81 OT— Vols start three seniors, two juniors, led by 8 early in 2nd half, but three Jayhawks played 40:00+ in this OT thriller. Kansas made 44% of its 3’s in its 5-0 start. Tennessee is #36 experience team, Kansas #283.

        10) Virginia Tech 89, Purdue 83— Finals of Charleston tourney elevated Hokies into the top 25, which they may have floundered by losing at Penn State last night. Tech outscored Purdue 19-7 on foul line. Both teams made over 40% of their 3’s.

        9) Duke 118, Kentucky 84— Result like this in a season opener distorted everyone’s view of the season; did Duke become a little overrated because they played so well in this game? If you’re John Calipari, how do you restore the young Wildcats’ confidence- they were down 91-54 at one point.

        8) Louisville 82, Michigan State 78 OT— Chris Mack has a tough job, following Rick Pitino at a place where the fanbase isn’t exactly patient, but this win gets him off on the right foot.

        7) San Diego 70, Colorado 64— Toreros are #6 experience team in America; they’re 5-1 with a 3-point loss at Washington. The middle of the WCC is better this season than it has been for a few years. San Diego starts four seniors, so this is a big year for them.

        6) Buffalo 99, West Virginia 94 OT— Bob Huggins has young guards this year, which isn’t a good thing, but Buffalo is really good and should dominate the MAC. Bulls were down 69-56 with 8:05 left in regulation, but they forced 19 turnovers (+8) and got a great road win.

        5) UConn 83, Syracuse 76— Orangemen don’t leave home before Christmas too much; they made only 23.3% of their 3’s in their first five games. This was Danny Hurley’s first statement win as the new UConn coach, coming in New York City, where it was like an old Big East conference tournament game.

        4) Michigan 73, Villanova 46— Wildcats graduated four guys from LY’s national champs, and Michigan took its frustrations out for losing the national title game to Villanova eight months ago- this game was 49-17 at one point. Another early season brickfest, with teams combining to make only 8-32 on the arc.

        3) Ohio State 64, Cincinnati 56— Good road win for Buckeyes squad that is experience team #281, while Cincy is #131 in experience. OSU led 55-39 with 5:23 left, before Bearcats made a late run but fell short. Buckeyes also have a road win at Creighton already.

        2) Seton Hall 83, Miami 81— Finals of Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton; when they announce the Field of 68 in March, games like this will carry some weight, even though it was played almost four months before Selection Sunday. Pirates are #233 experience team; this is a great win for them.

        1) Texas 92, North Carolina 89— Longhorns look to be improved this year, after going 30-37 the last two years. Texas lost to Michigan State the next night, but they’ve got this win and a neutral court win over Arkansas- the #256 experience Longhorns hope to be a factor in March.

        Wednesday’s List of 13: College basketball knowledge…….

        13) Top four rated conferences so far this season:

Big X, Big 14, ACC and the Big East.

        12) Teams with least experience in country, among teams in the betting rotation:

Kentucky, UCLA, Cal State-Northridge, Maryland, Chattanooga and Duke

One of those six teams has a lot more talent than the other five.

        11) Minutes Continuity measures how much guys have played together more than their experience- teams cobbled together by transfers are rated low in this metric:

Highest: Washington, Kansas State, Brown, Cal State-Fullerton, George Mason

Lowest: Tex-Arlington, Chattanooga, Idaho, Wichita State, Oakland

        10) Teams who used their bench the most so far this year:
Denver, Manhattan, Georgia, Princeton, NC State

Teams who used their bench the least:
San Diego, Furman, Georgia State, St John’s, Boston College

        9) Challengers to Gonzaga’s dynasty in the WCC are changing a little. St Mary’s is only 3-3 to start the season, but San Francisco and LMU are both still unbeaten. Conference seems to be a little deeper this season; BYU is still pretty good and San Diego seems improved, too.

        8) Mike Davis is the guy who replaced Bob Knight as the basketball coach at Indiana, which was an enormous job for a rookie coach. That was 18 years ago.

18 years and three jobs later (he has won at all his coaching stops) Davis is now the coach at Detroit Mercy in the Horizon League. His son Antone is a freshman for the Titans, and the kid can shoot a basketball- he’s made 24 of his last 38 3-point shots.

Horizon League has slipped of late (ranked #24 LY, were as high as #10 in 2011) and Davis got this job because the Titans are 16-47 the last five years. Detroit’s last winning season was in 2013, when their best player was the then-coach’s son (Ray McCallum Jr).

Detroit starts young Davis and four seniors, so they’ll be an interesting follow this winter. They also have five true freshmen, six JC transfers and two graduate transfers.

        7) Rough start to the season for the Pac-12; Oregon is their highest-rated team, but the Ducks lost at home to Texas Southern Monday, as a 24-point favorite. Not looking good right now for the Pac-12 to get a lot of at-large spots in the NCAA’s.

        6) Texas Southern uses November/December to fund its program, playing a ridiculous number of road games for guarantee fees. Here is who they’ve played so far:

Nov 6, won 72-69 at Baylor
Nov 10, lost 104-67 at Gonzaga
Nov 12, lost 85-73 at Iowa State
Nov 14, lost 103-64 at San Diego State
Nov 18, lost 85-63 at Evansville
Nov 26, won 89-84 at Oregon

Their first Division I home game is January 19th. January freakin’ 19th.

        5) Teams who have taken the highest % of 3-point shots:
Drake, Eastern Washington, Villanova, Siena, North Dakota State

        4) Teams who have made the highest % of 3-point shots:
Indiana State, New Mexico, Detroit, South Dakota State, Creighton

        3) Teams playing the fastest tempos so far this season:
FIU, Marshall, Eastern Kentucky, Citadel, Rider, Green Bay

Teams playing slowest tempo so far this season:
Virginia, Siena, Marist, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Houston

        2) As of Monday night, there were still 15 kids in the country who’ve taken 2+ foul shots per game and made all of them, led by Oakland’s Jaevin Cumberland, at 26-26.

        1) Oakland’s Braden Norris was leading the country in 3-point %age, making 12 of his 14 shots behind the arc. Ian Sistare of Dartmouth was next, at 11-14.

Game of the Night: Spurs at Timberwolves – 8:05 PM EST

Both these playoff teams from a season ago have seen plenty of ups and downs through the first five weeks. Minnesota (10-11 SU, 11-10 ATS) has come back to life due to addition by subtraction following the trade of Jimmy Butler to Philadelphia. The Wolves began the season at 4-9 with the disgruntled Butler on the roster, but since the trade, Minnesota has won six of eight games, including back-to-back road wins at Brooklyn and Cleveland following an 0-8 start on the highway.

The Spurs (10-10 SU, 10-10 ATS) are adjusting to life without Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili as San Antonio sits in second place of the Southwest division entering Wednesday’s play. San Antonio edged Chicago on Monday, 108-107, but failed to cash as six-point road favorites. DeMar DeRozan has put together a solid debut season in San Antonio by averaging 24.6 ppg, as he led the Spurs with 21 points in Monday’s win. However, the Spurs have dropped four straight games following a victory dating back to November 4.

San Antonio held off Minnesota in the season opener at AT&T Center, 112-108 as 2 ½-point home favorites. DeRozan poured in 28 points in his first game in a Spurs’ uniform, while LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 points and 19 rebounds. Wolves’ guard Jeff Teague paced Minnesota with 27 points, but big man Karl-Anthony Towns was limited to eight points in 22 minutes. The Wolves have cashed the UNDER in seven straight games, while owning a solid 8-3 SU and 7-4 ATS record at Target Center.

                Holy Over

Both the Wizards and Pelicans are each on solid OVER streaks as the two teams expect to light up the scoreboard again tonight in New Orleans. Washington (8-12 SU, 8-12 ATS) has sailed OVER the total in five straight games, while New Orleans (10-11 SU, 9-12 ATS) have hit the OVER in six of the past seven contests. These two squads are going in opposite directions following dramatically different starts to the season as they meet for the second time this week.

New Orleans jumped out to a 4-0 start, but own a 6-11 record the last 17 games, while Washington has won six of nine since a 2-9 beginning to the season. The Wizards knocked off the Pelicans last Saturday, 124-114 as 3 ½-point home favorites, as the teams barely finished OVER the total of 237 ½. Anthony Davis didn’t suit up for the Pelicans that night, as New Orleans is riding a four-game losing streak since dropping 140 points on San Antonio on November 19.

The Wizards are seeing their highest total of the season (240 ½), while hitting the OVER in five of six games with a total of 230 or more. Washington is coming off a stretch of seven of eight games at home, as the Wizards have lost seven of their past eight road contests, while failing to cover in all seven defeats.

                Texas Tussle

Not many people would have predicted that the Mavericks and Rockets would own the same amount of wins (9) towards the end of November. Dallas (9-9 SU, 12-6 ATS) has dominated at home by winning eight of 10 games at American Airlines Center, but have lost seven of eight road contests. The Mavericks have won six of seven overall, including a 113-104 home victory over Boston on Saturday as 2 ½-point underdogs.

Dallas hooks up with Houston (9-10 SU, 7-12 ATS) for the first time this season after the Rockets swept the Mavs last season. The Rockets won five straight games earlier this month, but limp home after losing three consecutive road contests at Detroit, Cleveland, and Washington. Two of those defeats came in overtime, including Monday’s 135-131 setback to the Wizards in spite of James Harden’s 54 point output. Since starting 0-4 at home, the Rockets have won four straight at Toyota Center, which includes three covers.

                New York State of Mind

The Knicks (7-15 SU, 12-9-1 ATS) are one of the hottest ATS teams in the league right now by covering in five straight games. New York barely cashed as 7 ½-point underdogs in last night’s 115-108 defeat at Detroit, while the Knicks saw their three-game winning streak end. The Knicks finish off a three-game road trip in Philadelphia as New York tries to avenge a four-game sweep by the 76ers last season.

The Sixers (14-8 SU, 8-14 ATS) are going backwards from an ATS perspective by failing to cash in four consecutive games. Jimmy Butler got Philadelphia off the hook in Sunday’s 127-125 triumph at Brooklyn by nailing the game-winning three-pointer to finish off a 14-point rally in the second half. The 76ers own a 1-4 ATS mark in their last five games at Wells Fargo Center, which includes a loss as a 13-point favorite to Cleveland for its first home defeat of the season last Friday.

                Buzzed Off

The Hawks (5-16 SU, 9-12 ATS) ended a 10-game losing streak on Sunday by squeezing past the Hornets, 124-123 as 6 ½-point home underdogs. Atlanta followed up that upset by edging Miami last night, 115-113 as 7 ½-point ‘dogs to pick up their second road victory of the season in 11 tries. Now, the Hawks draw the Hornets for the second time this week and the third time this season.

Charlotte (10-10 SU, 13-7 ATS) rebounded from the Atlanta loss by holding off Milwaukee on Monday, 110-107 as 4 ½-point underdog to avenge an opening night defeat to the Bucks. The Hornets have excelled at home by winning seven of 10 games at Spectrum Center, but are 1-1 ATS as a double-digit home favorite with one of those non-covers coming in a 113-102 win over the Hawks earlier this month as 11 ½-point chalk.

                Clip Show

The Clippers (13-6 SU, 12-7 ATS) are rolling of late by winning seven of their last eight games as they welcome in the struggling Suns tonight. Los Angeles saw its seven-game OVER streak end in Sunday’s 104-100 victory at Portland as four-point underdogs, while holding an opponent to 100 points or below for only the third time this season. Interestingly enough, the Clippers own an 0-5 ATS record this season when coming off consecutive covers, which is the case heading into tonight.

The Suns (4-16 SU, 8-12 ATS) fell short in a 109-104 home setback to the Pacers last night to drop to 1-5 the last six games. Phoenix has covered four straight games as a double-digit underdog, including upsetting Milwaukee last Friday as 13 ½-point ‘dogs, 116-114. The Suns lost all four meetings with the Clippers last season, while last beating Los Angeles at the end of the 2015-16 season.

                • Hot & Not Report
                  November 26, 2018
                  By YouWager.eu

                  Who's Hot and Who's Not

                  Week of November 26th

It was all about two specific NFC South teams in last week's piece, and both the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to get out of Week 12 with SU and ATS wins. That's not surprising to bettors who have rode with the Saints during their now 9-0 ATS run (10-SU), but it was nice to see the Buccaneers not repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot and use that offense - that's been one of the best in the league at moving the ball – to finally pile up some points. Bettors were routinely getting burned by the Bucs week after week and as I suggested a week ago, those results were likely to flip around sooner rather than later.

This week the football focus takes a week off as it's time to revisit this piece from a month ago when the NBA season was just a week old. Nearly every NBA team has 20 games under their belt now and identities have begun to take shape.

Golden State may be the ones dominating those story lines currently with their dysfunction putting them on a 2-8 ATS run in the betting markets entering Monday, but they aren't the only preseason projected favorites in the Western Conference to still be a bad bet. In fact, last month I discussed how the brutal ATS starts of Golden State, Houston, OKC, and the Lakers were an issue right out of the gate, and four weeks later, only OKC can claim a winning ATS record at the moment.

There may be no other sport where the point spread truly is the “great equalizer” than in the NBA, but let's put the magnifying glass over a few other franchises/betting runs today.

                  Who's Hot

Look to the best teams in the East for 'Overs' – Toronto, Milwaukee, Philly a combined 43-19 O/U

For years in the NBA there has been the general notion that if you want to see high-scoring games it's better to watch the majority of the teams out West. Golden State has led the charge in that regard the past half-decade given their ability to score, but teams in the East have always been saddled with the idea that defensive basketball comes first there. Whether that's been a growing “stereotype” since the days of Larry Bird's physical Boston Celtics teams vs. Magic's “Showtime” L.A Lakers, I don't really know, but in 2018-19, that idea has been completely flipped on it's head.

The top three teams in the East right now (Toronto, Milwaukee, Philadelphia) are the only three teams in the entire NBA with 14 or more 'overs' cashed so far. All three of these teams understand that they've got a distinct talent advantage on the floor on most nights, and like the Warriors of year's past, are simply running and gunning to outscore their foes, assuming they won't be able to keep up. Given that those three teams are the only three in the East with more than 11 SU wins to enter the week, that strategy appears to be working quite well.

What is still surprising though is the idea that the totals for Raptors, Sixers, or Bucks games still haven't really caught up to them. Even in today's NBA when a total of 215 is like the new baseline (when it was 204 or so just a few years ago), these three leaders in the East continue to surpass their numbers at a near 70% clip. When two of those three teams have squared off against one another, the 'over' is a perfect 3-0 so far, and that's with all three of those totals closing at least in the low 220's.

Now chances are the numbers for these totals will start to catch up to these three teams soon and more 'unders' will start to hit, and it begins for Milwaukee on Monday night. Their road game in Charlotte currently has a total of 234, but with about 70% of the action already on the high side, it appears many are going to ride with this trend as long as they can.

                  Who's Not

The Boston Celtics – League Worst 7-13 ATS

While the dysfunction out in Golden State dominates the media airwaves, it's the struggles of the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference that probably aren't getting the publicity that they should. Big things were expected from the Celtics this year after losing in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals last spring, knowing that stars like Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward would be back and healthy for this campaign. But this Celtics squad is just a .500 team through 20 games, and no team in the entire league as a worse ATS record than Boston at 35%.

Boston takes the court on Monday as they visit New Orleans, and the fact that this point spread has flipped from opening at Boston -1 to New Orleans -2 currently probably tells you all you need to know about how the betting market currently views this Celtics team. Some of that move might be injury related on both sides, but bettors are more likely to have been jilted by backing the Celtics at least once this year, sentiment is finally starting to significantly go against this Boston team. Twenty games may not be quite enough to really establish the old “they are who we thought they are” mantra about this Celtics unit, but it's still a 1/4 of the way through the year and Boston – a team one win away from the Finals last year without their two superstars – is still sitting at .500. There's got to come a point when the markets start to view this Celtics team as one that their current record shows, and maybe we've already reached that point.

However, as I touched on earlier with the thought that some 'unders' are coming for Raptors/Bucks/Sixers games, it may not be long until we see this Celtics team start cashing ticket after ticket. There is no question that November has not been kind to the Celtics (3-9 ATS), but two of those three ATS victories did come against current division leaders in the East (Toronto, Milwaukee) and that suggests that this Celtics team simply has a tough time “getting up” for many of these early season games to win by a significant margin.

That's no different than what we've seen from teams like Cleveland or Golden State in recent years, when playoff success tends to further the mindset that it's all about being at your best from about the All-Star break and beyond. The NBA season is a long and grinding one, and with the Celtics still showing they can beat the best of the best within their conference, I'd be willing to bet that this team will be fine long-term.

It may not happen this week or next, but Boston will start to turn their SU and ATS record around when a little more urgency kicks in. When that becomes the case remains to be seen, but when betting markets are so heavily influenced by recent results, the spreads for Boston in the foreseeable future could end up presenting quite a bit of value for “Bet ON” scenarios.

                  • DESPITE LAVINE, FADE BULLS OFFENSE, AND TODAY'S NBA ODDS AND ANALYSIS
                    Nov 28, 2018 | By: MONIQUE VÁG

ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS AGAINST ONE OF THE WORST

The 14-6 Milwaukee Bucks host the 5-16 Chicago Bulls tonight. The Bucks are the highest scoring team in the Association averaging 121 points per game. That number is even higher at home, at 123.2 points per contest. They have also been solid on the defensive end, allowing 109.9 points per game.

The Bulls rank 29th in the Association in points scored on the road, only managing to put up 101.8. With the Bulls still without Lauri Markkanen, Bobby Portis, Denzel Valentine and Kris Dunn, scoring will be tough to come by. Take Under the game total of 228.5.

STRUGGLING TO GET STOPS ON THE ROAD

The Wizards possess one of the worst defenses in the league and it is even worse on the road, surrendering an average of 122 points per game. This does not bode well for them, as they play against the Pelicans who have won eight of their first 10 home games this year, and rank as the second highest scoring team at home with 122 points per game.

These two teams met last Saturday night in Washington, and it was the Wizards who came out on top with a 124-114 result. Things look to be much different at home for the Pelicans this time around, as they should be able to take advantage of a porous defense and cover the spread as 6-point favorites.

EMPHASIS ON THE “D” IN DALLAS
The Rockets have dropped under .500 on the season, courtesy of three road losses in a row versus three subpar teams in the Pistons, Wizards, and Cavaliers. Injuries have affected their chemistry and they are hoping Chris Paul and Gerald Green are good to go for today’s matchup with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks have been a surprise team this year. They've won seven of their last nine contests by playing lock down defense, surrendering only 105 points per game over their last three. On the injury front, the Mavs hope Luka Doncic and Dennis Smith Jr. are healthy enough to start.

The total has gone Under in eight of Dallas's last nine games when playing Houston, and four of the last five games with Houston at home. With the way the Mavericks are playing defense, and the Rockets’ struggling offense, take Under 217 total points.

                    LEAN TOWARDS THE HISTORICAL DOMINANCE
Both the Spurs and Timberwolves enter today's matchup with very similar statistics in points per game, points allowed, and wins.

Although Minnesota has won six of their last eight games since the Jimmy Butler trade, they have struggled historically versus the Spurs. Head-to-head, the Spurs have gotten the better of the Timberwolves posting a 9-1 record over their last 10 games. Take the Spurs with the 4.5 points as they should keep it close on the road.

                    GETTING THE BALL INSIDE

The Suns surrender the most points in the paint per game at 53.5. This sets up a favorable matchup for the Clippers today, as they average 52.5 points in the paint per game.

Clippers’ center Montrezl Harrell looks to be in for a good night, if he can stay out of foul trouble, as the Suns surrender an average of 25.5 points, 16.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per contest to opposing centers. Look into taking Harrell’s points, rebounds, and assists total Over.

                      • Westbrook ties for 3rd in triple-doubles, Thunder beat Cavs
                        November 28, 2018
                        By The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Russell Westbrook moved into a tie for third place on the NBA list for triple-doubles with 23 points, 19 rebounds and 15 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder completed a regular-season sweep of the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers with a 100-83 victory Wednesday night.

Westbrook's triple-double was his third this season - all in the last four games - and the 107th of his career, matching Jason Kidd and trailing only Oscar Robertson (181) and Magic Johnson (138). Kidd took 1,247 games to reach 107, while Westbrook needed only 760.

The 19 rebounds were one off Westbrook's career high, set in last season's finale against Memphis.

Jerami Grant added 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting for the Thunder, who have won 13 of 16 after an 0-4 start.

Jordan Clarkson led Cleveland with 25 points, while Collin Sexton (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Cedi Osman (14 points, 10 rebounds) each had a double-double. The Cavaliers agreed to trade Kyle Korver to Utah after the team had arrived at Chesapeake Energy Arena, leaving them with only nine players in uniform. Eight got into the game.

                        BUCKS 116, BULLS 113

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 36 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, and Khris Middleton made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left to lift Milwaukee over Chicago.

Antetokounmpo and the Bucks (15-6) won an entertaining duel with former teammate Jabari Parker, who put up 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists in his latest return to Milwaukee. Parker signed with the Bulls last offseason after spending his first four NBA seasons with the Bucks.

Malcolm Brogdon smartly passed the ball back to a wide-open Middleton at the top of the 3-point arc to set up the winning shot. Justin Holiday missed a 3 for Chicago that would have tied it in the final seconds.

Antetokounmpo also had a crucial block of Parker's shot with the score tied in the last minute. Brogdon had 24 points, and Middleton added 17.

Rookie guard Ryan Arcidiacano scored 22 points but the Bulls (5-17) dropped their fourth straight game and eighth in the past nine.

                        JAZZ 101, NETS 91

NEW YORK (AP) - Donovan Mitchell returned from a two-game absence with 29 points, taking over down the stretch and leading Utah past Brooklyn.

Mitchell showed no effects from his bruised ribs, scoring 12 points in the final 5:42 to help the Jazz seize control of a close game.

Rudy Gobert had 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Jazz, who bounced back from a miserable performance in their last game without Mitchell, a 121-88 home loss to Indiana on Monday. Mitchell scored mostly on drives into the lane but nailed a 3-pointer that made it 93-89.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 18 points off the bench for the Nets, who dropped their season-high fourth straight.

                        PELICANS 125, WIZARDS 104

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 28 points and 15 rebounds as New Orleans stemmed a four-game slide with a victory over Washington.

Jrue Holiday scored 29 points and Julius Randle added 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Pelicans, who put Tim Frazier in the starting lineup at point guard and slid Holiday over to shooting guard.

Frazier had 12 points and 12 assists in his third start of the season. Nikola Mirotic added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Kelly Oubre Jr. and Markieff Morris each scored 22 for the Wizards, who trailed by 20 at halftime and never got closer than 11 in the second half.

                        MAVERICKS 128, ROCKETS 108

HOUSTON (AP) - Rookie Luka Doncic and Devin Harris each scored 20 points, and Dallas beat Houston despite a triple-double by Rockets star James Harden.

Harden had 25 points, 17 assists and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't nearly enough for a team missing Chris Paul because of an injury. Houston dropped its fourth in a row after winning a season-high five straight.

Dallas used an 11-2 spurt to push its lead to 117-95 with seven minutes left, prompting Houston coach Mike D'Antoni to clear the bench.

It's the third straight win for the Mavericks and just their second victory on the road this season.

Paul sat out for the third straight game after resting the first game and missing the last two with a sore left hamstring.

                        TIMBERWOLVES 128, SPURS 89

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Robert Covington scored 21 points, and the Timberwolves earned their fourth straight win.

Minnesota (11-11) reached .500 for the first time since Oct. 31. Karl-Anthony Towns and Derrick Rose each had 16 points, and Taj Gibson finished with 13.

The Timberwolves had dropped 14 of their last 15 against San Antonio, but it held the Spurs to 39.5 percent shooting.

Jakob Poeltl led San Antonio with 14 points, and Marco Belinelli had 11.

Minnesota improved to 7-2 since trading disgruntled star Jimmy Butler to Philadelphia in exchange for Covington, Dario Saric, Jerryd Bayless and a second-round draft pick.

                        76ERS 117, KNICKS 91

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid put on a show with his father in the stands for the first time this season, collecting 26 points and 14 rebounds while leading Philadelphia to the victory.

Embiid's spin move into a one-handed jam earned a smile and applause from Thomas Embiid, a colonel in the Cameroon military who is visiting from the family's home country and plans to spend a few weeks with his MVP candidate son.

JJ Redick hit four 3s and scored 24 points for the 76ers. Ben Simmons had 14 points.

Enes Kanter and Mario Hezonja each scored 17 points for the Knicks. The Knicks have played nine of 12 games on the road and were coming off a 115-108 loss to Detroit on Tuesday.

                        HORNETS 108, HAWKS 94

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Jeremy Lamb scored 22 points, Cody Zeller had a season-high 19 and Charlotte avenged a loss to Atlanta.

The Hawks topped the Hornets 124-123 on Sunday night at home when John Collins blocked Kemba Walker's shot at the buzzer. But this one wasn't close.

Charlotte (11-10) limited Atlanta to 34 percent shooting from the field to move back above .500 on the season and improve to 8-3 at home.

Hornets star Kemba Walker, who came in averaging 27.9 points per game, finished with 19 points while battling through an off shooting night. He was 6 of 19 from the field and 6 of 10 from the foul line.

Trae Young had 18 points for the Hawks, who were coming off a 115-113 win at Miami on Tuesday night.

                        TRAIL BLAZERS 115, MAGIC 112

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard had 41 points, including a franchise-record 10 3-pointers, and Portland held off Orlando.

Jusuf Nurkic added 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Trail Blazers stopped a season-high three-game slide. Lillard surpassed the previous Portland record of nine 3s that he shared with Nicolas Batum.

Nikola Vucevic had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who have lost four of five.

CJ McCollum hit a tiebreaking 3 down the stretch for the Blazers. Lillard's floater with 55 seconds left gave Portland a 113-110 lead.

Orlando played without Aaron Gordon, who was sidelined by a sore lower back.

                        CLIPPERS 115, SUNS 99

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Danilo Gallinari had 28 points and 10 rebounds as Los Angeles won its ninth straight home game by defeating Phoenix.

Lou Williams scored 20 points while Tobias Harris (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Boban Marjanovic (12 points, 12 rebounds) notched double-doubles for the Clippers (14-6), who have the NBA's longest active home winning streak and have won 10 of their last 12 overall.

Phoenix is off to the worst start in franchise history at 4-17. Devin Booker led the Suns with 23 points.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                            13) 40 years ago this week, one of my all-time favorite TV shows made its debut on CBS.

The White Shadow was about a retired NBA player who coached an inner-city high school team in Los Angeles- his old college friend was the school’s principal.

The show starred Ken Howard, who was brilliant as a high school coach who bickered with the female assistant principal; the show was written by Bruce Paltrow, better known as Gwyneth Paltrow’s father.

Now that I’ve written that, I feel old. 40 years ago. Damn

                            12) This week, Major League Baseball announced a multi-year partnership with MGM Resorts that includes sponsorships and promotions across various media platforms, as legalized wagering becomes an established thing all over America. Right now, eight states have legal sports betting, with more to come, for sure.

                            11) Last year, Scott Tolzien started at QB in the Colts’ season opener against the Rams in LA; Tuesday night, he was the THIRD quarterback taken by the Birmingham Fire in the new AAF, who will be coached by former Packers’ DB Tim Lewis.

                            10) If you’re wondering about this new football league, the AAF that drafted its QBs Tuesday night, there will be no TV timeouts and 60% fewer commercials than NFL games.

Other differences will include no kickoffs and instead of onside kicks, the trailing team will get the ball on their own 35-yard line facing 4th-and-10. There will also be a 30-second play clock and mandatory two-point conversion attempts after touchdowns.

The league starts the Saturday night after the Super Bowl and has a 10-game schedule this year, with eight teams in the league, at least for the first season.

                            9) USC kept head football coach Clay Helton, but four assistant coaches were told to take a hike over the weekend. In college football, the assistant coaches do the recruiting, so this is no small thing, since college football recruiting is basically a 24/7/365 pursuit.

                            8) Larry Scott is the commissioner of the Pac-12 conference; he makes $3.1M a year, more money than every football coach in the Pac-12.

Greg Sankey is the commissioner of the SEC; he makes around a million bucks a year, less than every head football coach in the SEC.

At $3M a year, you’d think Mr Scott could find a way to get the Pac-12 Network on DirecTV.

                            7) West Virginia OC/play caller Jake Spavital is the new football coach at Texas State; they must’ve been watching that 59-56 game with Oklahoma last week. Mountaineers finished in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense this year; Spavital is considered a really good recruiter, which will come in handy at Texas State, which needs a lot of players.

                            6) Purdue football coach Jeff Brohm turned down Louisville’s offer, will stay as coach of the Boilermakers, which is good news for Purdue football fans.

                            5) Cleveland Cavaliers traded Kyle Korver to the Utah Jazz for two future 2nd-round picks and Alec Burks,

                            4) Why is ESPN running another hour-long story on Bob Knight? Hasn’t this subject been beaten to death by now? Knight won three national titles but was a creep/bully who made the game less fun for everyone around him. When winning isn’t fun, thats a problem.

                            3) Vanderbilt’s star freshman guard Darius Garland is out for this season after he had meniscus surgery; big loss for the Commodores.

                            2) Fact that I found weird: Eldrick Woods made his first hole-in-one in 20 years last week while playing golf with Fred Couples in La Quinta, CA. How does a guy who is that good a golfer go 20 years in between hole-in-ones?

                            1) I’m guessing you do too, but I get dozens of e-mails from companies promoting their Cyber Monday or Black Friday sales. They shout out “Hurry before its too late!!!!”

When it comes to spending your money, it is never too late. A few hours after that sale ends, another one just like it begins, and that too, according to e-mails, is too good to pass up.

Guess it is a cheaper way of advertising, but enough already with the e-mails!!!!

                              • Inside the Paint - Thursday
                                Chris David

Game of the Night (TNT, 8:05 p.m. ET)
Golden State (15-7 SU, 9-13 ATS) at Toronto (18-4 SU, 11-10-1 ATS)

Thursday’s matchup from the Scotiabank Arena could very well be a preview of next year’s NBA Finals as both the Raptors (2/1) and Warriors (1/2) are listed as favorites to win the Eastern and Western Conferences respectively.

Unfortunately for tonight, this game won’t have as much drama since Golden State is still dealing with key injuries but nonetheless, I expect Toronto to make a statement.

Tony Mejia, senior writer and handicapper, offered up his thoughts on the game.

He said, “The Warriors have lost their last four road games and spent most of November at Oracle, leaving the state only for that ill-fated Texas trip that produced three setbacks. While Stephen Curry could return as early as this contest, Steve Kerr says it’s more likely that he’ll be returning on Friday against Detroit, so the degree of difficulty intensifies against the team with the league’s best record. Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green should make life difficult for Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson as catalysts right out of the gate and the Raps have a lot of length to throw at both of those guys to keep them from finding a rhythm. Three of the four occasions in which Golden State has failed to reach 100 points have come on the road.”

Curry (groin) is expected to miss and the offshore outfit 5Dimes.eu opened Toronto as a heavy eight-point home favorite over Golden State.

Toronto has won six straight games and that includes a 122-114 win over Memphis on Monday as a 5 ½-point road favorite. The Raptors rallied from a 17-point deficit to earn the cover.

At home, the Raptors have gone 9-2 this season but they haven’t been profitable for bettors (5-6 ATS). Offensively, they’re ranked third in scoring at 117 points per game and second in field goal percentage (49.3%). Golden State is first in shooting (49.4%) and fifth in scoring (116 PPG) but the absence of Curry is noted.

Without the All-Star the Warriors have gone 5-5 and they enter this game on a three-game winning streak. As Mejia mentioned, the road numbers (0-4) haven’t been good without Curry and the depth issue should play a factor in this game.

The Warriors have gone 7-1 (4-4 ATS) versus the East this season and the ‘over’ has gone 6-2 in those games with Golden State averaging 116.9 points per game. The lone loss came to the Milwaukee Bucks (134-111). The Raptors also own a 7-1 non-conference record (3-4-1 ATS) with the only setback coming to the Pelicans at home.

Golden State has won eight straight (3-4-1 ATS) in this series and four in a row at Canada. The Warriors were favored in all of those games and bettors should note that this year’s Golden State squad has been listed as an underdog three times this season and it’s 0-3 both SU and ATS. Also, the ‘under’ has cashed easily in all of those games as well.

Along with the top matchup between two contenders, there are two late-night games and below is my quick handicap.

                                Indiana (13-8 SU, 10-10-1 ATS) at L.A. Lakers (11-9 SU, 7-13 ATS)

The late-night TNT double-header is a nice non-conference matchup from the Staples Center. The Lakers (-4 ½) will try to snap a two-game losing skid while the Pacers will look to improve to 3-0 on their current four-game road trip.

Indiana blew the doors off Utah 121-88 on Sunday and escaped trouble on Monday with 109-104 win at Phoenix. While the Pacers are a solid club and certainly a team to watch in the playoffs, the oddsmakers have had a nice pulse on them. Indiana is 2-4 both SU and ATS as a road ‘dog this season, and it’s just 2-5 against teams at .500 and above. The ‘bully’ label is certainly in play when you see that they’re 11-3 against teams below .500. They did just beat the Jazz on Sunday but Utah and maybe Boston have been two of the biggest disappointments this season. Can the Pacers steal one at the Lakers?

Unlike Indiana, Los Angeles has been good versus teams above .500 (6-4) but it’s still weak on defense (113 PPG) and it can’t buy a shot from 3-point land (34.7%). They’re ranked in the bottom third of the league in both those categories, while the Pacers (102.2 PPG) are ranked second in scoring defense and fifth from distance (37.6%).

The Lakers aren’t in great form offensively, scoring 100.2 PPG in their last five games and that’s led to a 5-0 ‘under’ run. When you factor in the current play and the opponent, it’s tough to make a case for a Los Angeles team that has been pedestrian at home (6-4 SU, 3-7 ATS). And for whatever reason, the club has struggled against teams from the Eastern Conference (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS) at the Staples Center.

The home team has won four straight games in this series and three of the victories came by double digits. The ‘under’ is 3-1 during this span.

                                L.A. Clippers (14-6 SU, 13-7 ATS) at Sacramento (10-10 SU, 12-7-1 ATS)

Surprising starts by both clubs and while I believe both will taper off as the season progresses, you have to be impressed with the pair. For this matchup, the public will lean to the Clippers (-3) because the line is short and they’re clearly the more talented than Kings. We all know it’s not that simple and there are reasons to fade or follow both clubs. What’s stood out this season for me on Los Angeles is its great record as a favorite (9-1 SU, 8-2 ATS). The point-spread has only mattered in one game and with this line being so short, it’s unlikely to play a factor on Thursday.

L.A. is playing this game on no rest and it’s gone 1-1 both SU and ATS in that role this season. Another factor that could have me staying away is the Clippers production on the road (5-5 SU, 5-5 ATS), and they’ve pulled some wild wins out of their hat too.

Sacramento has been decent at the Golden 1 Center this season, going 5-4 SU and 6-2-1 ATS but their recent form could have you pumping the breaks. The Kings are 2-4 in their last six games and the defense has surrendered 119.5 PPG during this span, which has directly attributed to a 6-0 ‘over’ mark. Thursday’s total opened at 235 and they haven’t seen a number this high since early November.

This will be the first meeting between the pair this season. The Clippers have gotten the better of the Kings recently, sweeping last year’s encounters (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) but the two road wins came by a combined eight points. The ‘over’ went 3-1.
