  • SEC first to put 4 teams in top 5

    October 19, 2014

The Southeastern Conference has reached a new milestone in The Associated Press college football poll, becoming the first league to place four teams in the top five - all from the western division.

Mississippi State stayed No. 1 after a weekend off. The Atlantic Coast Conference's Florida State held its ground at No. 2 after beating then-No. 5 Notre Dame 31-27.

Mississippi remains No. 3. Alabama jumped three spots to No. 4 after a 59-0 victory against Texas A&M. Auburn moved up a spot to No. 5 during a bye week, taking advantage of losses by previously unbeaten Notre Dame and Baylor.

The Irish dropped two spots to seventh. Baylor fell to No. 12 after losing 41-27 at West Virginia.

Thirty times since 2001 a conference has placed three teams in the top five of the AP Top 25. The SEC had done it 16 times since 2009.

    • TCU now highest-ranked Big 12 team

      October 19, 2014

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - TCU coach Gary Patterson quickly dismissed any talk about the Big 12 title chase.

Someone brought up the league standings The No. 10 Horned Frogs, now the conference's highest-ranked team, had just completed their first-ever stretch of playing three consecutive top-15 opponents with a dominating 42-9 victory over Oklahoma State.

''I haven't thought about it. I didn't think about it before, `' Patterson said. ''We've got six games left, and all six are capable of playing very well.''

While TCU (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) is one of four teams with a league loss and behind Kansas State (5-1, 3-0) in the standings, the Frogs are ranked higher than any of them halfway through their third season in the power-five conference. That comes after winning three consecutive Mountain West titles and then going 6-12 in Big 12 games the past two years.

Asked if they were the best team in the conference, dual-threat junior quarterback Trevone Boykin responded, ''I wouldn't say that right now. We still have a lot of football left.''

TCU moved up two spots in the new Associated Press poll Sunday, a day after holding Oklahoma State (5-2, 3-1) out of the end zone and outgaining the Cowboys 676-258 in total yards. The Frogs are just ahead of No. 11 Kansas State and No. 12 Baylor (6-1, 3-1), which dropped eight spots after its loss at West Virginia (5-2, 3-1), which moved into the poll at 22.

Oklahoma slipped from 11th to 16th after its one-point loss to the Wildcats and Oklahoma State dropped completely out from 15th after its five-game winning streak was snapped.

Patterson knew long before the season the difficult stretch they faced once they got into conference play after having two off weeks in September. They wrap up their October stretch at home Saturday against Texas Tech (3-4, 1-3).

TCU started this month with a 37-33 win over Oklahoma in its Big 12 opener before a 61-58 loss at Baylor after blowing a 21-point lead in the final 11 minutes and losing on a last-play field goal.

The Frogs quickly eliminated any notion that the 4 1/2-hour shootout loss had any lingering effects on them. They led Oklahoma State for good after three long touchdowns in a span of four offensive snaps in the first quarter - a 34-yard run and catch-and-run plays of 77 and 84 yards from Boykin to Josh Doctson.

''We definitely had to bounce back and get a confidence boost. That's what we're used to doing,'' cornerback Kevin White said. ''Great teams have to bounce back. You can't let one loss define your season and define your team. We knew one loss wasn't going to define us, and we would just play harder, that's all we could do.''

Following the home game against Texas Tech, which won 56-53 in triple overtime its last trip to Fort Worth two years ago, the Frogs go to West Virginia and then host K-State.

Patterson said his team has already shown him plenty about its character by how it has handled tough stretches.

''Nobody flinched. You can either look around and you can blame people or we can just roll up our sleeves. That's what we've done,'' Patterson said. ''But that's what we've always done at TCU. You can't last 17 years, 14 as a head coach, without outlasting some hard times. Some close games. Some heartbreaks.''

      • Schedule favors No. 2 FSU down stretch

        October 19, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The road to the College Football Playoffs is open for Florida State after a thrilling victory Saturday night.

The No. 2 Seminoles passed their toughest test by holding on against then-No. 5 Notre Dame with a second-half comeback orchestrated by quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Seminoles (7-0, 4-0 ACC) control their own destiny, and no currently ranked teams remain on the schedule. They are one of only three top-five teams that are still undefeated, and both No. 1 Mississippi State and No. 3 Ole Miss have at least two more games against ranked teams. The Bulldogs and Rebels face each other in the regular-season finale in the Egg Bowl, so one is guaranteed to end the season with a loss.

''You can say whatever you want: This team is dominant,'' FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said. ''This team understands how to win. ... This team has tremendous what I call adversity tolerance. It doesn't flinch. It can deal with anything.''

The Seminoles just aren't last season's title team. Instead of setting offensive records, the scoring offense ranks No. 21 in the country. Instead of a defense that set a school record for interceptions, the pass defense is ranked No. 60 and has given up big games to Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, N.C. State's Jacoby Brissett, Clemson freshman Deshaun Watson and Oklahoma State's J.W. Walsh.

The 'Noles have three victories by less than a touchdown.

But Florida State finds ways to win and still has the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Winston, who completed 15 of 16 passes during the second-half comeback against the Fighting Irish.

''We don't have anything to prove to anybody,'' Winston said. ''We've just got to keep playing and hopefully things will go our way. But one thing we are consistently proving is that we are winners.

''And no matter what type of adversity we may face, we are family here at Florida State and we play hard.''

Louisville (6-2) presents the biggest challenge for Florida State with a total defense that ranks No. 1 in the country and a scoring defense ranked No. 4. But its 59th-ranked scoring offense could be a problem in trying to pull off an upset against FSU. A Thursday night game Oct. 30 doesn't help much considering the Seminoles have an off week to prepare and get healthy.

The rest of the ACC opponents on the FSU schedule - Virginia, Miami and Boston College - are each 4-3. The Seminoles will be heavy favorites in all three.

Rival Florida (3-3) looms in the season finale, but 2014 has been abysmal for the Gators, who have dropped 3 of 4, including a 42-13 home loss to Missouri on Saturday. Coach Will Muschamp may be sitting on the hottest seat in the country.

A loss would put Florida State in a precarious position without anyone left on the schedule to impress the selection committee. The Seminoles won't have to worry about that if they can keep winning.

''That's one thing we can do - we can go four quarters,'' FSU linebacker Terrance Smith said. ''A lot of teams, they fizzle out toward the end, but we know how to fight and play four quarters. Sixty minutes.''

        • Michigan State figures out balancing act

          October 19, 2014

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Michigan State has found the perfect balance this season.

AdvertisemenConnor Cook is shredding Big Ten defenses. A large group of talented receivers keeps making huge plays. The rushing numbers are piling up, and on Saturday, the Spartans shut out high-scoring Indiana for the final 35 1/2 minutes.

The biggest question around the conference might be whether anyone on the Spartans' schedule can stop them from making college football's inaugural playoff.

''We were able to run the football. Possession time was about 40/20,'' coach Mark Dantonio said after the 56-17 blowout. ''Just an outstanding job by our guys.''

Since Dantonio's arrival in 2007, Michigan State (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) has traditionally relied on defense and ball control to win games. It's worked masterfully.

The Spartans played in two of the conference's first three championship games, won a Rose Bowl and are now on a streak of 13 consecutive wins against Big Ten foes including last year's title game.

This year, the Spartans have opened it up.

Cook has emerged as one of the league's most proficient passers in his second season as the starter. He threw for three more touchdowns Saturday, including a 4-yard shovel pass to R.J. Shelton that broke open the game.

Jeremy Langford rushed for 109 yards and three scores. Nick Hill had 178 yards, including a late 76-yard TD run, and Tony Lippett finished with his fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season. By the time Saturday's rout ended, the Spartans had 332 yards passing and 330 yards rushing and had pushed their average scoring total to 47 points.

The biggest change has been the play of Michigan State's receivers.

Lippett entered the weekend leading the league in yards receiving (111.5) and touchdown receptions (eight), and he didn't disappoint against Indiana. He finished with seven catches and 123 yards, none of his plays more spectacular than the sliding, over-the-shoulder 41-yard grab he made right in front of the Michigan State coaches on third-and-9. Six plays later, Cook threw the TD pass to Shelton that broke open the game.

Those sorts of plays seem to be infectious.

Tight end Josiah Price made Indiana pay for Donovan Clark's gamble by turning a first-down pass into a 67-yard catch-and-run to set up Michigan State's go-ahead score in the second quarter. Aaron Burbridge managed to keep his balance after spinning away from a defender during the second quarter, picking up nine yards on third-and-7 to keep another touchdown drive alive. And somehow Macgarrett Kings Jr. saved Cook by stealing a pass that appeared to be intercepted.

''I thought the receivers played outstanding. They made a lot of 50-50 catches,'' Dantonio said.

Michigan State's defense looks as though it's improving, too.

After holding off late rallies by Nebraska and Purdue, the Spartans forced six three-and-outs, allowed just 11 yards passing and held Indiana to its second-lowest point total of the season.

          The timing couldn't be better.

Michigan State hosts rival Michigan next week, then welcomes Ohio State to town for a rematch of last year's classic Big Ten title game before closing the season at Maryland, at home against Rutgers and at Penn State.

And if the Spartans keep playing like this, a second straight trip to the Big Ten title game seems entirely plausible.

            The largest favorite to cash
Marshall (-21) at Florida International, 45-13 and Oregon (-21) vs Washington, 45-20

            Top 25 Notes
-- The upset bug reached up and bit Baylor, as they left burning Morgantown with a 41-27 loss, falling from the ranks of the unbeaten against red hot Clint Trickett and West Virginia. It was even more shocking since the Mountaineers were 4-2 SU and had failed to cover in three straight entering play.

-- The game of the day, and perhaps the season, was down in Tallahassee. Florida State failed to cover yet again, but found a way to come back and top Notre Dame 31-27. FSU might be 7-0, but they're just 1-6 ATS.

-- Top 10 teams ended up 6-2 SU/ATS, with one of the losses coming from the Irish in a battle of Top 5 teams.

-- Ohio State rolled over Rutgers 56-17 for an easy cover. Since their setback to Virginia Tech back on Sept. 6, the Buckeyes are 4-0 SU/ATS, and the 'over' has hit in five straight.

-- And bettors continue to yell, "Hotty Toddy!" Mississippi started extremely slow, but kicked it into high gear and buried Tennessee, 34-3. The Rebels are 7-0 SU and 6-0-1 ATS, while the 'under' has connected in six of their seven games.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- It was a low-scoring weekend in the ACC, as the 'under' cashed in six of the seven games. Of course, the exception was in Chapel Hill, where North Carolina outlasted Georgia Tech 48-43. UNC has allowed 34 or more points in five straight games, and 27 or more points in each of their seven games. ... Duke continues to roll, stopping Virginia 20-13. The Blue Devils have covered four of the past five overall, and they are 4-0 SU and 3-0-1 ATS at home. The 'under is also 5-1 in their past six. ... Wake Forest is a terrible offensive club. They were dropped 30-7 by Syracuse, and they have a total of just 20 points in the past three weeks. The 'under' is 6-1 for the Deacs this season.

-- The Big 12 had a difficult weekend, as its top ranked teams Baylor and Oklahoma each suffered straight-up losses. ... Texas Christian might be the best team in the Big 12 right now, as they routed Oklahoma State by a 42-9 score. The Cowboys had scored 20 or more points in 58 consecutive games.

-- How about Minnesota? Sure, they did not cover, and barely won, against Purdue, but they moved to 6-1. It was their first non-cover since their only setback Sept. 13 against a good TCU team. ... Nebraska continues to be a friend to bettors, topping Northwestern 38-17. The Huskers have covered five straight. They'll host Rutgers next Saturday. ... Michigan State has had some trouble finishing games lately, but they had no problem putting away Indiana, 56-17. Defense was a hallmark for Sparty last season, but the 'over' is 6-1 through seven games this season.

-- Stanford continues to tumble in the Pac-12. The Cardinals are a great defensive team, but their offense is abysmal. They held the high-flying Arizona State offense to 'just' 26, but scrounged up just 10 points in a loss. The Cardinal are just 1-3 ATS in the past four. Not surprisingly, the 'under' is a perfect 6-0 for Stanford this season. ... Oregon has covered back-to-back games since their loss to Arizona, rolling 45-20 against Washington. The total, well...see the bad beat section below. ... UCLA outlasted California in a tight one. The home team has now cashed in five straight meetings in this series.

-- In the SEC, Alabama embarrassed Texas A&M by a 59-0 count. The Tide rolled up 35 points in the second quarter, their most in a single quarter in program history. It was also Kevin Sumlin's first shutout defeat in seven seasons in College Station. ... Is this the end for Will Muschamp in Gainesville? Missouri manhandled Florida 42-13 in 'The Swamp'. ... Georgia blasted Arkansas 45-32 for their fifth straight win. They have also covered back-to-back games for the first time this season. The 'over' is 6-1 for the 'Dawgs. ... Auburn and Mississippi State were on byes.

            Mid-Major Report

-- If you really like to dig deep and follow the Sun Belt, one of the most shocking results of the day was New Mexico State-Idaho. The Vandals covered 29-17, which was whatever. But the total was set at 67.5, and fell three touchdowns short. The 'over' was 6-0 in the past six for the Aggies entering play, and the over was 4-1-1 in six games for the Vandals entering the day. ... South Alabama has won three straight, but Georgia State covered in their matchup. The Panthers are now 4-1 ATS over the past five.

-- In the Mountain West, Hawaii was traveling to the mainland for the third time in less than a month. Perhaps all of the travel has them tired. They're 0-3 SU/ATS in trips in the contiguous 48, and 2-2 SU and 4-0 ATS in four games in the islands. ... San Jose State is showing signs of life lately, winning and covering back-to-back game for the first time this season. ... Wyoming started out 3-1 SU and 2-1 ATS. However, they have dropped three in a row straight-up, and four straight against the spread. The 'under' was 4-0 in the first four for the Cowboys, but the under is 3-0 in their past three.

-- In Conference USA, Florida Atlantic continues to be tough at home. They outscored Western Kentucky 17-0 in the fourth quarter, winning 45-38. The Owls are now 3-0 SU/ATS at home, and 0-4 SU and 2-2 ATS on the road. They head to Marshall next week. ... Speaking of the Herd, they thrashed Florida International 45-13 to stay unbeaten at 7-0, and they have now covered six in a row.

-- In Mid-American action, Northern Illinois failed to cover for the fourth consecutive game. ... Kent State picked up its first win of the season, crushing Army 39-17. The Golden Flashes are 2-1 ATS over the past three after starting out 0-4 ATS. ... Massachusetts was awful last season, and they started out 0-6 SU this year. But they have won back-to-back games, covered four straight and six of the past seven. Don't sleep on the Minutemen. Win or lose, their games have been exciting.

            Bad Beats

-- Bad beats were aplenty, especially in the early games if you like MAC totals. Eastern Michigan-UMass (63.5) had 44 total points at halftime, but just six points in the third quarter and none in the fourth. ... Ball State-Central Michigan had 11 points in the final 2:22, turning an 'under' into an 'over' in a hurry.

-- The game between OK State and TCU (62) had 51 total points through the first 42:19, but zero points in the final 17:41.

-- If you had Notre Dame on the moneyline (+290), salutations. They appeared to score the go-ahead touchdown in the waning moments, but a rare offensive pass interference call wiped out the play, forcing them backwards 15 yards. FSU hung on for a 31-27 win. Depending on when you got in on the total, it could have been an 'under', 'push' or 'over'. If you had over 60, the closing number, it was another bitter pill to swallow.

-- Kansas-Texas Tech (57.5) appeared to be headed for an 'over', but seven total points in the fourth quarter put the brakes on that. There was no scoring in the final 13:21 of the game.

-- It wasn't the worst bad beat, but Miami-Ohio did score a touchdown with 2:36 left, picking up a backdoor cover at NIU.

            • 4th Quarter Covers - Week 8

              October 19, 2014

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the eighth college football weekend. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows, get the details in this weekly column.

Utah (-1½) 29, Oregon State 23: This game featured just five field goals through three quarters with Utah leading 9-6 as a slight road favorite in the late game Thursday night. Oregon State finally broke through for the first touchdown in the game connecting on a 72-yard pass play to give the Beavers their first lead of the night. After holding the Utes to a 3-and-out the Beavers appeared poised to take control of the game moving into Utah territory in an 11-play drive but ultimately the Beavers were forced to punt just outside of field goal range. Pinned deep, a big pass interference penalty helped Utah into better field position and a 53-yard run by Devontae Booker set up the Utes for the go-ahead score with just four minutes to go. The Beavers did enough to force overtime as Trevor Romaine hit a tying field goal as time expired even after a huge 3rd-down sack nearly cost Oregon State that chance. The Utes went first and scored with relative ease and Oregon State answered on a 4th-and-goal pass play. In the second session a reasonable Oregon State field goal was missed and the Utah running game that dominated the night punched in the winning score. The final touchdown also pushed the game ‘over’ on the early week numbers even though the game played out as a very low scoring affair.

Marshall (-21) 45, Florida International 13: With a 32-point final margin this game appeared to be another Marshall blowout win but this was a seven-point game at halftime and Marshall led just 24-7 entering the fourth quarter. The Herd got past the spread early in the fourth and then scored on an interception return touchdown to put the game out of reach. Marshall was much less dominant in the box score than on the scoreboard as Florida International competed well but was on the wrong end of the turnover margin, something they have had great success with most of this season.

Northern Illinois (-13½) 51, Miami, OH 41: The Huskies entered this game off a rare MAC loss and early on the rout appeared to be on as Northern Illinois took a 37-14 lead late in the first half. Miami managed to score in the final minute of the half to take some momentum into the break and the Redhawks did the only scoring in the third quarter to get within nine points. There was little defense in the fourth quarter as both squads alternated touchdowns on relatively quick drives with NIU leading 51-34 and past the spread late in the game but Miami completed its final drive for the spread-winning touchdown with just over two minutes to go.

Duke (-3) 20, Virginia 13: Virginia out-gained Duke by 131 yards but despite nearly 500 yards of offense the Cavaliers managed just 13 points in Durham. After falling behind 10-0 early, Virginia tied the game by halftime and it was 13-13 heading into the fourth quarter. Virginia was just to the edge of field goal range on its first drive of the final quarter before stalling and it was Duke that broke through with a few big plays to complete a scoring drive with less than eight minutes to go. Virginia looked poised to answer, again moving into Duke’s territory on its next possession before failing on 4th down with two penalties being costly on the drive.

North Carolina (-2) 48, Georgia Tech 43: If you like offense this ACC tilt provided one of the more entertaining games of the day. Georgia Tech took the lead early in the second half but the Tar Heels appeared poised to run away with back-to-back touchdowns to lead by nine entering the fourth quarter. There were five touchdowns in the final frame as Georgia Tech scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 43-42 lead with three minutes to go, missing two-point conversions on both scores, costing those on the Yellow Jackets early in the week at a price as high as -2½ for the road team. By game time the Tar Heels closed as a 2-point favorite and North Carolina delivered a great final drive, converting a touchdown run with 11 seconds on the clock to win the game. Two Georgia Tech penalties in the final three plays certainly helped the cause for North Carolina in a game that could have gone either way.

San Jose State (-3) 27, Wyoming 20: This was a 10-10 game entering the fourth quarter after a 63-yard fumble return touchdown for Wyoming. San Jose State dominated the yardage in the game and went up early in the fourth but Wyoming answered with back-to-back scoring drives, settling for a short field goal to up 20-17 with just four minutes to go. In the final minute San Jose State was able to force overtime with a 50-yard kick. A defensive holding penalty helped the cause as the Spartans scored a touchdown to start overtime, a score that pushed the total ‘over’ as well and Wyoming was not able to convert a first down in its possession as San Jose State escaped with the road favorite cover.

South Florida (-2) 38, Tulsa 30: A trying season for Tulsa took another step backward Saturday as a 27-7 halftime lead quickly evaporated. By the start of the fourth quarter South Florida closed to within nine points and the writing was on the wall with a big momentum shift early in the final frame as South Florida blocked a field goal attempt. The Bulls then pulled away with a pair of quick touchdowns, taking the lead for the first time in the game with six minutes to go on an 85-yard pass play. South Florida added a field goal and then down eight Tulsa had a solid kickoff return to near midfield that was negated with a holding penalty and the final drive for the Hurricanes went quietly in a very depressing defeat for a program that has now lost six in a row.

Louisiana Tech (-11½) 27, Texas San Antonio 20: This under-the-radar Conference USA clash attracted a lot of action with an opening line of -7 climbing all the way up to -13 before buy-back on Saturday. Early on the underdog looked promising with a 10-6 lead at halftime but in the third quarter Louisiana Tech scored three touchdowns in about a five-minute span of game clock aided by turnovers. The host was just past the spread early in the fourth quarter even after a Texas San Antonio field goal but the Roadrunners added a touchdown after getting great field position after a lousy Louisiana Tech punt. Both teams threatened to score again late but Louisiana Tech missed a field goal and Texas San Antonio fell short on downs needing seven.

Middle Tennessee State (-2) 34, UAB 22: The upstart Blazers appeared on their way to another upset with a 22-21 lead entering the fourth quarter but Middle Tennessee State took the lead in the fourth with a 67-yard touchdown run. UAB wound up with interceptions on its next two drives and with about two minutes to go the Blue Raiders hit a big pass play to seal the win.

Florida Atlantic (+3) 45, Western Kentucky 38: The Hilltoppers scored with 12 seconds left in the first half to go up 31-14 but Florida Atlantic stormed back to get within 10 by the start of the fourth quarter. The Owls wound up outscoring Western Kentucky 31-7 in the second half and with two touchdowns in the final 2:18 Florida Atlantic delivered the outright upset by forcing two Western Kentucky punts.

Texas Tech (-11½) 34, Kansas 21: The spread on this game fell from as high as -14½ down to just -11½ by kickoff and the final margin fell in the middle. Kansas scored with three seconds left in the third quarter to close within six but Texas Tech answered quickly in the fourth quarter to go up by 13. Kansas fumbled in Texas Tech territory on its next possession and neither team seriously threatened to score the rest of the game.

Nebraska (-7) 38, Northwestern 17: Northwestern led Nebraska 17-14 at the half and the Cornhuskers were short of the spread entering the fourth quarter up just 21-17. Nebraska passed the spread for the first time with an early fourth quarter touchdown and then added 10 more points in the final frame on short fields after woes in the punting game for the Wildcats, getting a 15-yard penalty to put Nebraska at midfield and then having a short kick returned to its own 19-yard line late in the game to help Nebraska pull away.

San Diego State (-10) 20, Hawaii 10: The late game Saturday night fell right on the closing number but most on the Aztecs won as the spread was as low as -7 earlier in the week. San Diego State led by just seven entering the fourth quarter but a short field goal with six minutes to go pushed San Diego State to the 10-point margin with an overwhelming yardage advantage. Hawaii was immediately intercepted in its final legitimate chance to score and San Diego State eventually handed the ball back to the Warriors on downs rather than kicking another short field goal and risking a block, three points that would have been pretty important for a number of people.

              • Top 25 Betting Recap - Week 8

                October 20, 2014

Week 8 of the 2014 NCAA football betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the rankings and see how they did from an ATS perspective in this go around this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result-ATS Result)

                1) Mississippi State (Bye)

                2) Florida State (W-L vs. Notre Dame 31-27)
The Noles never looked the part of the better team against Notre Dame, but the coast should be clear from here.

                3) Ole Miss (W-W vs. Tennessee 34-3)
After falling behind 3-0, the Rebs never looked back against UT.

                4) Baylor (L-L vs. West Virginia 41-27)
Baylor couldn't survive a second straight bad first three quarters, and it was knocked from the ranks of the unbeatens.

                5) Notre Dame (L-W vs. Florida State 31-27)
A suspect offensive pass interference call is what gave the Irish their first loss of the year.

                6) Michigan State (W-W vs. Indiana 56-17)
There was a point that MSU was in a dog fight with Indiana, but a 28-0 second half changed all of that.

                7) Alabama (W-W vs. Texas A&M 59-0)
Did you really think that Alabama was done? Not after that win, you don't.

                8) Auburn (Bye)

                9) Oregon (W-W vs. Washington 45-20)
There were no problems for the Quack Attack this week against U-Dub.

                10) Georgia (W-W vs. Arkansas 45-32)
Everyone has really forgotten who Todd Gurley is in Athens.

                11) Oklahoma (L-L vs. Kansas State 31-30)
The Sooners' kicking woes took them out of title contention once and for all.

                12) TCU (W-W vs. Oklahoma State 42-9)
Was TCU that good, or was Okie State that bad? It's a question that begs to be asked for sure.

                13) Ohio State (W-W vs. Rutgers 56-17)
JT Barrett has the biggest test of his career next week in Happy Valley.

                14) Kansas State (W-W vs. Oklahoma 31-30)
That's two straight trips to Norman in which the Wildcats have pulled off the big upset.

                15) Oklahoma State (L-L vs. TCU 42-9)
Don't be stunned if the Cowboys don't win another game this year.

                16) East Carolina (Bye)

                17) Arizona (Bye)

                18) Arizona State (W-W vs. Stanford 26-10)
Mike Bercovici has made the QB competition interesting in Tempe.

                19) Nebraska (W-W vs. Northwestern 38-17)
Another 146 yards and four TDs for Ameer Abdullah against NW.

                20) Stanford (L-L vs. Arizona State 26-10)
The Cardinal never figured they would be 4-3 through seven games.

                21) Texas A&M (L-L vs. Alabama 59-0)
That win over South Carolina in Week 1 feels like forever ago.

                22) Clemson (W-L vs. Boston College 17-13)
Cole Stoudt is clearly no Deshaun Watson, and the Tigers might be struggling for it.

                23) Utah (W-W vs. Oregon State 29-23)
The Utes survived on the road in Corvallis, and they have a real shot to seize control of the Pac-12 North next week against USC.

                24) Marshall (W-W vs. FIU 45-13)
Does anyone care that Rakeem Cato has 19 TDs and 1,912 yards this year?

                25) USC (W-W vs. Colorado 56-28)
Four first quarter TDs made this one a no-contest early.

                • NCAAF opening line report: LSU faces statement game vs. Ole Miss

                  Mississippi at Louisiana State (+3)

Unbeaten Mississippi is ranked No. 3 in the country heading into Week 9 of the college football season, with a 7-0 SU record. More important for bettors backing the Rebels, though, is that they are ranked No. 2 against the spread, having yet to lose to the oddsmakers, with a 6-0-1 ATS record.

Keeping both those streaks intact won’t come easy in a Southeastern Conference that’s been eating its own all season. Ole Miss hopes to keep its championship hopes alive when it travels to the bayou this week to face Louisiana State (6-2 SU and ATS).

The Rebels rolled Tennessee 34-3 to easily cash as a 16-point home chalk Saturday, while LSU is coming off a 41-3 home trouncing of Kentucky laying 11.5 points.

“Tennessee was a very real overlook spot for the Rebs, and they played a complete game,” said John Lester, senior lines manager for bookmaker.eu. “I’d say this is the best team in the country, but I still don’t trust their quarterback (Bo Wallace).

“And just when everyone was ready to write off LSU, they come back with a big win. They could make a major statement here.”

Oregon Ducks at California Golden Bears (+18.5)

These Pac-12 rivals square off in a Friday night game, with No. 7 Oregon (6-1 SU, 3-4 ATS) continuing its quest to try to get back into the four-team playoff picture. Since their stunning 31-24 home loss to Arizona, the Ducks rolled over UCLA 42-30 giving 1.5 points on the road, then thumped Washington 45-20 as a 21-point home fave.

After going 4-1 SU and ATS in its first five games, California (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS) has dropped two in a row, but the Golden Bears gave UCLA all it could handle Saturday before losing 36-34 as a 6.5-point home underdog.

“We’ve seen a massive uptick from the Ducks' offense since their left tackle (Jake Fisher) returned. Marcus Mariota remained relatively clean against a pretty good pass-rushing team Saturday,” Lester said. “Cal is so one-dimensional offensively and bad defensively, I don’t know if they can keep up.

Southern California Trojans at Utah Utes (+1)

No. 19 Utah (5-1 SU and ATS) is just a few minutes away from a perfect record this season, with its only loss coming on a late TD in a 28-27 setback at Washington State. The Utes have been a big surprise, beating Michigan at the Big House – though the Wolverines are awful – and following their lone loss with a 30-28 upset at UCLA and a 29-23 overtime win at Oregon State last Thursday giving 1.5 points.

No. 21 Southern Cal (5-2 SU and ATS) has also won its last two SU and ATS, pummeling visiting Colorado 56-28 on Saturday as a 19.5-point fave.

“We expect to see a lot of groundwork between these two teams,” Lester said. “The Utes have been fantastic for their backers this year, but USC is a very public team, so we had to be wary of those factors when setting the line.”

Michigan Wolverines at Michigan State Spartans (-17)

You can’t say much good about Michigan (3-4 SU and ATS), but Michigan State (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) is another story. The fifth-ranked Spartans’ lone loss came at Oregon in a game they were in through three quarters before getting flattened late 46-27 as a 14-point road pup in Week 2.

Since then, they’ve won five in a row SU (3-2 ATS), including a 56-17 road beatdown of Indiana on Saturday as an 11.5-point favorite. Michigan is coming off a bye, after fending off Penn State 18-13 as a 2.5-point chalk to end a three-game SU slide.

“I’m not so sure Mark Dantonio doesn’t have one of the top four teams in the nation. The Spartans are impressive, and they finished a game decisively this week (at Indiana),” Lester said. “I don’t have much to say about this one. Michigan is garbage, and in a rivalry situation, this could get ugly.”

                  • NCAAF Line Watch: Bettors should jump on Marshall now

                    Spread to bet now

                    Marshall -28 vs. Florida Atlantic

Marshall opened as a 26-point home favorite over Florida Atlantic, and the line quickly moved up to -28. The Thundering Herd are a perfect 7-0 SU on the season, and they need all the style points they can in order for a remote shot at getting into the 4-team playoff discussion.

Florida Atlantic has been awful on the road this season. The Owls are 0-4 SU with three of their losses coming by 48, 41, and 28 point margins. Marshall has a potent offense that is averaging 47.4 points per game on an incredible 7.8 yards per play this year. Knowing they need to win by big margins, laying the 28 points now with Marshall would be a prudent move by bettors.

                    Spread to wait on

                    Tennessee +17 (vs. Alabama)

This line came out with Alabama as a 16-point road favorite at Tennessee, and most sports books have already moved this game up to -17/-17.5 after early money came in on the Crimson Tide. This line will likely go higher once the public gets involved.

Alabama comes in off a 59-0 win over Texas A&M while Tennessee enters off a 34-3 blowout loss as 16-point underdogs at Mississippi. Both teams played the Rebels and lost, yet Alabama is laying more points into the Vols despite playing on the road. The value will be on the home dog in this game, especially closer to kick off.

                    Total to watch

                    Vanderbilt at Missouri

Vanderbilt and Missouri have two of the worst offenses in the country this season. The Commodores are only averaging 17.6 points per game on just 4.7 yards per play. The Tigers are only averaging 5.1 yards per play despite scoring 30.7 points per game. Those numbers are not in line with each other, and represent Missouri’s fortune of scoring on short drives, defense, and special teams.

Both teams also possess decent enough defenses to stifle the opposing offense. Vanderbilt is allowing 5.7 yards per play versus offenses averaging 6.0 yards per play. Missouri has even better numbers, allowing 4.7 yards per play versus opponents averaging 5.9 yards per play. If this total comes out at 45 or higher, there will be value with the Under.

Game of the Day: Arkansas State at Louisiana-Lafayette
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arkansas State Red Wolves at Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (+2, OFF)

The Arkansas State Red Wolves and Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns both put unbeaten Sun Belt Conference records on the line in a Tuesday night showdown at Cajun Field. The Red Wolves trounced host Georgia State 52-10 on Oct. 11 for their third straight victory since a one-sided loss to Miami. They’ll meet their match in the Ragin’ Cajuns, who followed up a narrow win over the Panthers with a 34-10 drubbing of Texas State a week ago in hostile territory.

The key to Louisiana-Lafayette extending its winning streak to three games will be finding a way to suppress the Arkansas State running game. The Red Wolves are ranked in the top 30 nationally at 219.2 yards on the ground per game, led by Junior running back Michael Gordon and his 9.4 yards per carry. The Ragin’ Cajuns are no slouches in the backfield themselves - averaging 192.8 yards per game - and quarterback Terrence Broadway looks like he has turned a corner.

                              TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

LINE HISTORY: Arkansas State opened -3 but the line has since dropped a half-point.

INJURY REPORT: Arkansas State: DB Charleston Girley (wrist), DB Chris Humes (biceps), DL Jonah Hill (knee) and OL Daniel Keith (ankle) are out. Louisiana-Lafayette: S Trevence Patt (ankle) and WR Jamal Robinson (foot) are questionable; OL Jeremy Sparks (neck) and DL Marvin Martin (knee) are out.

WEATHER REPORT: Cajun Field will see clear skies with temperatures in the low-80s and wind out of the northeast at 9 mph.

ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE (4-2, 5-1 ATS, 2-4 O/U): The Red Wolves could do no wrong against overmatched Georgia State, racking up 384 yards on the ground, another 234 through the air and converting 10-of-13 third-down opportunities. Gordon was the catalyst with 188 rushing yards and a pair of scores, and has 356 yards on just 33 carries in his past two contests. The Arkansas State defense has also excelled during the winning streak, allowing fewer than 13 points per game while holding each of their last two opponents below 75 rushing yards.

ABOUT LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE (3-3, 2-4 ATS, 3-3 O/U): Broadway struggled mightily in back-to-back losses to Ole Miss and Boise State - barely completing 50 percent of his passes with zero touchdowns and four interceptions - but has rebounded nicely. He went 20-of-26 for 216 yards in the victory over Georgia State and followed that up with a 225-yard, one-touchdown, one-interception performance against Texas State. That game also saw him rush for a season-best 101 yards on 19 rushes; Louisiana-Lafayette improved to 1-2 on the season in games where Broadway exceeds 50 rushing yards.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Red Wolves are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games.
                              * Ragin' Cajuns are 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games against teams with winning road records.
                              * Over is 5-1 in Arkansas State's last six conference games.
                              * Over is 10-2-1 in Louisiana-Lafayette's last 13 games on turf.

CONSENSUS: 54.17 percent percent of users are backing the Red Wolves -2.
