    Top 25 Notes
-- The upset bug took the weekend off after a tumultuous week for high ranked teams in the previous Saturday. Top 10 teams went 9-1 straight-up (SU) and 3-7 against the spread (ATS). Only Auburn fell, and that's because they were matched up against Mississippi State.

-- Oregon fell out of the Top 10 with their setback against Arizona last weekend, but they got back on track with a 42-30 win at UCLA.

-- Alabama just narrowly averted its second straight loss, hanging onto a 14-13 win at Arkansas. The Hogs were able to score against the Tide for the first time since 2011.

-- Oklahoma State is well down the rankings, but their only loss of the season is to top-ranked Florida State in their opening game in Arlington. The Cowboys likely won't shoot up the rankings after looking rather sluggish at Kansas. The Cowboys won, but didn't come close to covering.

-- Notre Dame was in a defensive slugfest last weekend with Stanford, but this week was a track meet with North Carolina. The Irish were unable to cover for just the second time in six games. As a double-digit home favorite, the Irish are just 1-2 ATS.

-- Overall in the Top 25, ranked teams were 14-7 SU and 6-15 ATS, with five games featuring ranked teams facing each other.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- In the ACC, Florida State looked like a top-ranked team for the second straight game, having no trouble with an inferior opponent at Syracuse, 38-20. Of course, the Orange were able to score a touchdown with 10:37 left in regulation to grab a cover. ... UNC covered for the first time in six tries in South Bend Saturday. The Tar Heels have given up 27 or more points in each of their six games this season, and 50 or more points in three of their past four. ... Miami-Florida got back on track with a 55-34 win and cover over Cincinnati. The Hurricanes are 4-0 SU/3-1 ATS, including three straight covers, at home.

-- One of the best games of the day took place in Waco in Big 12 action, especially if you like offense. Texas Christian piled up 58 points in regulation - and lost. Baylor trailed 58-37 with 11:38 left, but the Bears hit a field goal at the buzzer to stun the Horned Frogs. ... Kansas has dropped three straight, but they are 3-1 ATS in the past four outings. The 'under' has also cashed in five straight for the Jayhawks. ... Texas slipped to 2-4 SU with a narrow 31-26 loss to Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry game, but they covered for the third time in four outings.

-- Minnesota won and covered against Northwestern in an early-afternoon game, winning 24-17. The Gophers have won and covered three straight, and their only setback this season came at TCU back on Sept. 13. ... Iowa posted a season-high 45 points in their win over Indiana. After starting out 0-3 ATS, the Hawkeyes have covered three in a row. ... Wisconsin won for the fourth time in five games, but the Badgers have failed to cover in three straight, and they're just 1-5 ATS on the season.

-- It was a light slate in the Pac-12, with Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon State and Utah getting the week off. ... Washington brought California down to Earth quite a bit with a 31-7 win in Berkeley. It was quite amazing since Cal had scored 60 points last week in a win at Washington State. ... Southern California outlasted Arizona 28-26 in an amazing game in Tucson (see Bad Beats below).

There were no hiccups from the Magnolia State teams in SEC play. After huge wins a week ago, Mississippi and Mississippi State were impressive again versus big-time SEC West foes. Ole Miss pounded A&M 35-20 in front of the 12th man, and the Bulldogs fileted the Tigers 38-23, likely staking claim to the No. 1 spot in the rankings for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs have covered four straight, and they're 5-1 ATS this season. The Rebels, also 6-0 SU, improved to 5-0-1 ATS on the season. ... Louisiana State won 30-27 at Florida on a 50-plus field goal in the waning seconds. LSU is 25-1 SU under Les Miles following a loss.

    Mid-Major Report

It was a topsy-turvy day in the Mid-American Conference. Eastern Michigan scored the biggest upset of the week with a 37-27 win over Buffalo. The Eagles are just 2-4 SU, but they have covered three of the past four. ... Massachusetts snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 40-17 win at Kent State. While the Minutemen have struggled straight-up, they are 5-1 ATS over the past six games. ... Toledo lost on the road to Iowa State, and the Rockets are just 1-5 ATS over the past six.

--Georgia Southern was back to its covering ways, taking down Idaho as a 21.5-point favorite. The Eagles are now 6-1 ATS in seven games this season. ... For the sixth straight game, New Mexico State saw the cover hit. They travel to the Kibbie Dome in Idaho next week. The Vandals have seen the over go 4-1-1 in six games this season.

-- In Mountain West play, Colorado State won for the fourth straight games, and they are also 4-0 ATS during the span while the under has cashed in three in a row. ... Air Force was buried 34-16 at Utah State. The under hit for the third straight game for the Falcons, and the under is 5-1 in six games this season. ... New Mexico lost Friday to San Diego State, and the Lobos are just 1-5 ATS this season.

    Bad Beats

If you had the 'over' (54.5) in the Boston College-North Carolina State game, you were loving the 14-14 score at the end of the first quarter. However, the rains came after halftime, and there was a lightning delay. That caused the scoring to grind to a halt, and there were just nine total points in the second half on the soggy turf.

-- If you had Arizona on the moneyline, it was a tough loss. The Wildcats scratched back from 15 down to close to 28-26. After a successful onside kick, Arizona drove down for a very makeable field goal. However, a successful kick didn't count because USC called timeout first to ice the kicker. It actually worked, as the attempt from 36 yards was well wide right, and the Trojans held on while Wildcats' moneyline bettors shook their head.

-- Also in the Pac-12 Friday, Washington State looked to be in line for a cover. However, some late offensive struggles gave Stanford the ball back. Rather than sitting on the lead, the Cardinal poked in a touchdown with 98 seconds left to kill Cougar side bettors.

-- Total bettors in UMass-Kent State were either happy or destroyed by a pick-six by the Minutemen with 2:03 left. Under bettors likely had to settle for a push.

    • 4th Quarter Covers - Week 7

      October 12, 2014

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the seventh college football weekend. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows, get the details in this weekly column.

Central Florida (-2½) 31, BYU 24: The Cougars stormed out to a 24-10 lead early into the third quarter, but with two short drives, Central Florida tied the game, scoring late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter on matching 37-yard drives with a kick return and a punt return setting up the favorable field position. The Knights had plenty of chances to win in regulation, missing a field goal and then having an interception near the red zone. In the final seconds, a 50-yard field goal attempt was also blocked to force overtime. UCF went first in overtime and scored a touchdown in five plays, while BYU drove down to the UCF 6-yard line, but could not match the score to the extend the game.

Stanford (-16½) 34, Washington State 17: The Cardinal defense dominated the high-flying Washington State offense Friday night, but the Stanford offense continues to misfire in scoring opportunities. Stanford led just 24-17 into the fourth quarter and the Cardinal wound up with a late touchdown to steal the cover in the final two minutes, getting past the favorite line that was just shy of the 17-point final margin most of the week.

Oklahoma (-16½) 31, Texas 26: You know your season is not going well when you allow just 29 yards to your biggest rival in the first half, but are still losing the game. That was the scenario for Texas as they allowed early Oklahoma touchdowns on kickoff and interception returns. The Sooners pulled past the favorite spread in the fourth quarter leading 31-13, but Texas scored two touchdowns in the final nine minutes to pull with five for a deserved cover in game they out-gained Oklahoma, 482-232.

Michigan State (-21½) 45, Purdue 31: Most on the heavy road favorite Spartans got the game in at -20½, just below the three-touchdown margin which Michigan State took into the fourth quarter up 38-17. For the second straight week, Michigan State had a bizarre fourth quarter collapse as Purdue wound up within seven points with the ball and about three minutes to go on the clock. Austin Appleby made a terrible third down pass that wound up intercepted for a short touchdown to put the game away for the Spartans, but the Boilermakers took the cash.

Minnesota (-4) 24, Northwestern 17: As strange as it sounds, this game was for the Big Ten West lead. Minnesota took a 14-10 lead into halftime, right even with the common spread on the game. Entering the fourth quarter, the score remained the same. Early in the fourth, Minnesota had to settle for a short field goal from inside the Northwestern 10-yard line to go up by seven. Disaster nearly struck for Northwestern with a fumble on the kickoff return, they recovered but were forced to start from the Minnesota 3-yard line. The Wildcats went 97 yards for the tying score with the help of penalties, but the momentum swing did not last long as Jalen Myrick returned the next kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, putting Minnesota up for good. Northwestern threatened on a late drive, but did not get past the Minnesota 33-yard line as the Gophers held on despite the Wildcats having twice as many first downs in the game.

Florida State (-23½) 38, Syracuse 20: If not for Syracuse turnovers, this could have been a pretty tight game even with the Orange playing with two back-up quarterbacks. The yardage wound up pretty close, but Florida State pulled away taking a 31-13 lead into the fourth quarter and then adding an early touchdown to put the margin at 25 points and just past the favorite spread. Syracuse did not let the favorite cover sit for long, however, answering just three minutes later with a big pass play. Florida State had the ball in Syracuse territory late, but did not need to add to the score as the Seminoles fell to 1-5 ATS on the season.

Wisconsin (-26½) 38, Illinois 28: Illinois led this game 14-7 after the first quarter and at no point did the Badgers get past the heavy home favorite spread. Despite not playing a great game, Wisconsin looked like they might pull out the cover as after a 72-yard Corey Clement touchdown run, the Badgers led by 24 early in the fourth quarter. A big punt return sealed the underdog win for Illinois as they took over inside the Wisconsin 30-yard line and scored on the next play. Illinois added another touchdown with about three minutes to go and then recovered an on-side kick to make the final minutes fairly interesting, ending up with a 10-point defeat that really was not that close in the middle quarters.

Akron (-14½) 29, Miami, OH 19: Seeking to start a winning streak Miami played commendably at Akron, getting a touchdown right before halftime to get within two points. The Zips took advantage of two short-field drives to pull away leading 29-13 with five minutes to go in the game. Miami would not fold, however, as the Redhawks stole the cover back with a five-play drive going 91 yards to get within 10 with just three minutes on the clock. Favorite backers had a little hope as Akron recovered the on-side kick attempt and wound up near the Miami 30-yard line, but the Redhawks only had one timeout as the Zips got one first down to salt the game away.

West Virginia (-6) 37, Texas Tech 34: A season that has gone poorly for Texas Tech seemed on the verge of turning around, leading throughout in a big conference game. West Virginia was within seven heading into the fourth quarter, but a 69-yard run halfway through the final frame seemed to seal the win for the Red Raiders. Things got quite interesting from there as West Virginia tied the game with two touchdowns in a four-minute span with the defense stepping up. Forcing another punt, West Virginia got the ball back with less than a minute on the clock. Using timeouts well the Mountaineers gave themselves a shot, lining up for a long field goal attempt. Those on the road favorite had to hope for a miss and overtime to still have a chance with the huge momentum shift, but Josh Lambert impressively hit from 55-yards for an incredible comeback win for the Mountaineers.

Western Michigan (+1) 42, Ball State 38: This somewhat meaningless MAC game drew a lot of action with the line jumping around throughout the week. It was only fitting that the spread result would swing in the final minutes. Ball State led 38-28 entering the fourth quarter, but a 54-yard run put the Broncos within three with about seven minutes to go. Ball State had to punt back to Western Michigan and the Broncos completed the go-ahead drive, scoring with just over a minute to go. There was plenty of late drama left as the Cardinals quickly had the ball down to the Western Michigan 8-yard line at first-and-goal. All four attempts fell incomplete as Western Michigan held on.

LSU (-2½) 30, Florida 27: The Tigers led by three heading into the fourth quarter and that is where the final margin landed, but not without a see-saw end to the game. Florida scored the go-ahead touchdown with about six minutes to go after a great punt return from Andre Debose. LSU was more methodical, but the Tigers took the lead back with a touchdown after nine plays for 75 yards, leaving Florida with less than three minutes on the clock. The Gators connected for a rare big play with a 73-yard pass play to put Florida on the LSU two-yard line. The Gators could not punch the ball in and had to settle for a short field goal to tie the game. LSU was pinned back and had to punt putting Florida near mid-field with less than a minute to go. Disaster struck for a snake-bitten Florida team with a Jeff Driskel interception with 24 seconds left. LSU ran one play and kicked a game-winning field goal from 50 yards.

USC (+1) 28, Arizona 26: What would an Arizona game be without late drama? USC seemed to be in control against the lone remaining undefeated team from the Pac-12, leading 28-13 heading into the fourth quarter. The Wildcats scored to get within eight with about 10 minutes to go and then the defense delivered back-to-back key stops near mid-field. After the second USC punt, Arizona had just over three minutes to go 80 yards and the Wildcats got the job done, scoring with just over a minute to go, but the crucial two-point conversion attempt failed. The Wildcats were not done, however, as they incredibly recovered the expected on-side kick in the second straight week with an inexcusable late-game blunder for the Trojans against a desperation play. Arizona did not have much time, but they moved into field goal range only to have heartbreak with the 36-yard attempt missing. Most on Arizona still wound up cashing as the Wildcats were +2½ all week before a very late Saturday line move left the Wildcats as short chalk.

Clemson (-9) 23, Louisville 17: There were only 22 combined first downs in this defensive showdown in the ACC, but Clemson scored first half touchdowns on a punt return and a fumble recovery. The Tigers led just 20-17 entering the fourth quarter, but appeared that Clemson would sneak by the favorite spread, sitting with second-and-goal inches away from a touchdown after a Louisville penalty. Clemson could not punch it in, settling for a short field goal. It was then Louisville who failed in the red zone as they took a big play deep into Clemson territory in the final minute, only to wind up failing as well with a Clemson goal line stand. Clemson lost quarterback Deshaun Watson to an early injury in this game and while the ACC is rightfully catching some flack nationally, these defenses look legit with both teams combining to go 3-33 on third downs and 0-3 on key fourth down attempts.

Georgia Southern (-21½) 47, Idaho 24: Georgia Southern has been kind to ATS backers this season and the Eagles pulled out another late spread win last week. Idaho had trimmed a big early deficit to just nine points entering the fourth quarter, but Georgia Southern scored a defensive touchdown early in the final frame to lead by 16. With the game completely in hand and Idaho not calling its final two timeouts, Georgia Southern continued to run its offense, punching in a touchdown on third down with 12 seconds on the clock to put the Eagles conveniently just past the heavy favorite spread.

Michigan (-2½) 18, Penn State 13: It looked like another similar story was unfolding for Michigan as a second quarter turnover led to a Penn State touchdown to put the Lions up 13-7. With two field goals on short-field drives Michigan tied the game late in the third quarter. The Wolverines did not do much on offense in the final frame but the defense came up with big plays to secure field position as Michigan added a field goal and a safety and Penn State could not seriously threaten to score late.

Colorado State (-2) 31, Nevada 24: The Rams stormed out to a 31-3 lead late in the third quarter, but things got rather interesting late in this key Mountain West clash. Nevada put together three consecutive scoring drives, aided by a fumble in the middle of the run as the Wolf Pack got back into the game. Colorado State had to punt back to Nevada with about five minutes to go in the game and overtime looked likely with Nevada moving to the Colorado State 10-yard line with just a minute left in the game. A third down interception saved the day for the Rams who held on in a wild finish.

Hawaii (-5½) 38, Wyoming 28: Hawaii fell behind early at home in this game with Wyoming scoring on defense early in the game and leading 21-10 at the half as a slight underdog. Wyoming clung to just a four-point lead heading into the fourth, but an interception put Hawaii in business. The Warriors capitalized on strong field position to take a 31-28 lead and shortly thereafter Wyoming missed in a tying field goal attempt. The momentum carried over for Hawaii, punching in another touchdown to create the final 10-point margin.

      • Top 25 Betting Recap - Week 7

        October 13, 2014

Week 7 of the 2014 NCAA football betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the rankings and see how they did from an ATS perspective in this go around this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result-ATS Result)

        1) Florida State (W-L vs. Syracuse 38-20)
The Noles never broke a sweat against Syracuse, but they were never good enough to cover either.

        2) Auburn (L-L vs. Mississippi State 38-23)
Home field advantage is really going to be key in the SEC West this year, and Auburn fell victim to all of the cowbells in Starkville.

        3) Baylor (W-L vs. TCU 61-58)
The Bears rallied with 24 straight in the fourth to take down TCU and live to fight another day on Survival Saturday.

        4) Ole Miss (W-W vs. Texas A&M 35-20)
All of the hype is around MSU, but Ole Miss legitimately has a claim to No. 1 as well after putting forth a dominating performance on the road in College Station a week after upsetting annual powerhouse Alabama.

        5) Notre Dame (W-L vs. North Carolina 50-43)
Up Next) A date with the defending champs. Notre Dame's defense looked like it was already looking ahead to Jameis Winston and the gang in Tallahassee before dealing with UNC.

        6) Mississippi State (W-W vs. Auburn 38-23)
Dan Mullen has brought the Bulldogs all the way up to the No. 1 team in the land.

        7) Alabama (W-L vs. Arkansas 14-13)
The Tide look like anything but a legit playoff team right now. They were lucky to escape Fayetteville with their playoff hopes still intact.

        8) Michigan State (W-L vs. Purdue 45-31)
A late pick six was all that made this game look more respectable than it really was for Sparty.

        9) Oklahoma (W-L vs. Texas 31-26)
The Sooners went 1-for-11 on third downs and were outgained by 250 yards in the Red River Rivalry, but they lived to tell about it.

        10) Georgia (W-W vs. Missouri 34-0)
No Todd Gurley? No problems for the Bulldogs. Likely the most impressive win of the Richt era.

        11) Oregon (W-W vs. UCLA 42-30)
There are still really big problems along the offensive line for the Ducks, who are barely skating by.

        12) TCU (L-L vs. Baylor 61-58)
The Horned Frogs will rue the day that they let one get away in Waco.

        13) Arizona (L-L vs. USC 28-26)
We knew that the Wildcats were always fools' gold. There's a reason the oddsmakers opened them up as dogs against an unranked USC team at home.

        14) Texas A&M (L-L vs. Ole Miss 35-20)
Kiss A&M's chances of playing in the first playoff goodbye after a second straight loss to a Mississippi school.

        15) Ohio State (Bye)

        16) Kansas State (Bye)

        17) UCLA (L-L vs. UCLA 42-30)
The Bruins had fighting on their bench between coaches, and that's not something you see every day.

        18) Oklahoma State (W-L vs. Kansas 27-20)
The Pokes were on high upset alert most of the day before squeaking out a win in Lawrence.

        19) East Carolina (W-L vs. South Florida 28-17)
It took 30 minutes for the Pirates to wake up, but they finally downed a bad USF team.

        20) Arizona State (Bye)

        21) Nebraska (Bye)

        22) Stanford (W-W vs. Washington State 34-17)
A week after Connor Halliday broke the NCAA record for passing yards in a game, he had zip going against the Cardinal.

        23) Georgia Tech (L-L vs. Duke 31-25)
The Ramblin' Wreck lost to Duke for the first time in a decade and a half on Saturday.

        24) Missouri (L-L vs. Georgia 34-0)
Maty Mauk and the Mizzou offense were just downright embarrassing on Saturday.

        25) Clemson (W-L vs. Louisville 23-17)
The win meant nothing. Deshaun Watson's broken hand meant everything. The freshman phenom will now be out for at least a month with this injury.

        • NC State suspends 7 players for Week 8

          October 13, 2014

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina State suspended seven players - including its leading tackler and a second defensive starter - for this week's game against Louisville for their involvement in a BB gun incident, coach Dave Doeren said Monday.

Doeren said the players were playing a game with the BB guns at an off-campus residence last week and ''made a mistake in not recognizing that this activity could have resulted in someone being injured.''

The coach provided no further details. Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Suhgrue did not immediately return an email.

Among the suspended players are linebacker Jerod Fernandez and safety Josh Jones - both of whom started the 30-14 home loss to Boston College on Saturday.

Fernandez leads the team and is tied for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 58 tackles, and also has a team-best two interceptions. Jones has 38 stops, one sack and an interception.

The other suspended players were receivers Johnathan Alston and Jumichael Ramos, defensive linemen Justin Jones and Pharoah McKever and cornerback Mike Stevens.

Alston is tied for fourth on the team with 14 receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown while Ramos has one catch for seven yards.

Justin Jones has five tackles in five games, McKeever has made two starts and has two stops and Stevens has three tackles in six games.

''There's going to be a lot of next-man-in mentality'' at Louisville, Doeren said.

Additionally, five freshmen who are redshirting this season - Tyler Jones, Kalen McCain, Deyshawn Middleton, Terronne Prescod and Maurice Trowell - have been placed on team probation.

          • Hoosiers lose starting QB for season

            October 13, 2014

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld will miss the rest of the season after separating his non-throwing shoulder in Saturday's loss at Iowa.

Coach Kevin Wilson says Sudfeld will undergo surgery later this week. He is expected to be replaced by freshman Chris Covington against No. 8 Michigan State this weekend.

Covington went 3 of 12 for 31 yards after replacing Sudfeld last weekend in his most extensive action of the season.

Sudfeld was Indiana's most consistent quarterback in 2013 and was having a solid junior season, too. He was 101 of 167 with 1,151 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions for Indiana (3-3, 0-2 Big Ten).

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gators' Harris to split snaps with Driskel

            October 13, 2014

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida is changing things up at quarterback - at least partially.

Coach Will Muschamp said Monday that freshman Treon Harris will share snaps with fourth-year junior Jeff Driskel, who has eight turnovers in the last three games, against Missouri on Saturday.

''They both will play this week,'' Muschamp said. ''We'll work through the week, see how things go. Right now, Jeff will probably start, but they're both going to play.''

The move would have been made a week earlier, but Harris was suspended last Monday while authorities investigated a sexual battery charge against him. The female student withdrew her complaint Friday, and the university and Muschamp fully reinstated him later that day.

Gators safety Keanu Neal said it's a lesson in how quickly a person's life can change and that everyone needs to make smart decisions.

''Huge eye-opener,'' Neal said. ''That could've been any of us. That could've been anyone on the team. Thank God he didn't get in trouble for it, but it's definitely an eye-opener. It makes you think, that's for sure.''

Because Harris missed a full week of practice and preparation, he did not play in the 30-27 loss to LSU. He watched from the coaches' box, sitting near offensive coordinator Kurt Roper.

Harris has completed 4 of 6 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns this season. He replaced Driskel late in the third quarter at Tennessee two weeks ago and led the Gators (3-2, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) to 10 points in his first two drives. The Gators held on to win 10-9. The alleged incident involving Harris happened a few hours after Florida landed back in Gainesville.

So the Gators were essentially stuck with Driskel for another week.

He completed 14 of 25 passes for 183 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also fumbled early, which led to LSU's first touchdown. His second interception came on Florida's final play of the game. It was ill-advised pass into double coverage that was tipped, picked off and returned 23 yards to set up the game-winning field goal.

''I want to play better,'' Driskel said. ''Whatever comes after that, whatever happens, happens. That's not my call to make. I want to play better and give our team the best chance to win.''

Driskel has completed 55 percent of his passes for 878 yards, with six touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. He's really struggled in four SEC games, completing 49.6 percent of his passes for 630 yards, with five touchdowns and eight interceptions.

''You know, believe it or not, I'm not worried about me,'' Driskel said. ''I'm worried about the team. I want the team to play well. If it's going to help the team, I'm all for it. We're confident in Treon. I think the guys are confident in me as well. It's not going to be something that's going to divide the team or anything like that. We've got mature guys that can handle it.''

Driskel is a three-year starter for the Gators. Coaches, teammates and fans had high expectations for him before the season, but he's fallen far short so far.

''Just because I haven't made all the plays I would've liked to, doesn't mean I'm not confident,'' Driskel said. ''I'm still confident in my ability, what I can do and what I can do for this team. I don't think my confidence has ever been shaken.''

The Gators have a lot of confidence in Harris, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound Miami native who went 40-2 as a three-year starter at Booker T. Washington High School in Miami.

''He's a winner,'' Muschamp said. ''He certainly has a persona about him.''

Harris led the Tornadoes to consecutive Class 4A state titles, and the Gators believe he has the `it' factor.

''You saw it in the Tennessee game: He's just comfortable in the pocket,'' Neal said. ''He didn't really panic when things went wrong. He almost threw an interception and he didn't panic and he stayed in and did a great job in the Tennessee game. It's just having confidence in the pocket and not panicking.''

FSU: QB Winston will not miss games

            October 13, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Coach Jimbo Fisher said Florida State's Jameis Winston has committed no crime and is adamant the quarterback will not miss any games this season due to an ongoing sexual assault investigation.

Fisher said Monday recent reports about the investigation haven't revealed any new facts.

''This country is based off being innocent until proven guilty, not guilty till you're proven innocent,'' Fisher said. ''There is no victim because there was no crime. We're convicting a guy over things that are not true, based on evidence.

''There's facts of the case and what the reports are. Public opinion wants to do what they do. They don't get what they want. ... We believe in him, 100 percent.''

Florida State announced last week it will use an independent official in the student code of conduct hearing. No hearing date has been set.

Fisher said he wasn't concerned with the details of the hearing.

''Get it and get it over with,'' Fisher said.

A female student said Winston sexually assaulted her in December 2012. Florida State Attorney Willie Meggs declined to press charges against Winston last December due to inconsistencies and flaws in the evidence.

In addition to the Winston developments, Florida State fell to No. 2 after an 18-point win against Syracuse Saturday. Mississippi State leaped over the Seminoles in the Top 25.

Fished dismissed that as well, saying if his team takes care of its business against Notre Dame in another top 10 showdown Saturday the rankings may flip-flop again.

            • Baylor continues to lead high-scoring era

              October 13, 2014

The age of high-powered offenses continues to drive college football this season, with no end - or limit - in sight to how high the points can go.

Nowhere was the scoring fun more in focus this weekend than Baylor's 61-58 win over TCU on Saturday.

The Bears, led by Bryce Petty's national best of 510 yard passing for the week, rallied from 21 points down to hand the Horned Frogs their first loss of the season. Following the dramatic win, Baylor continues to lead the country with an average of 52.7 points per game, while TCU is third at 45.8.

The two teams combined to gain 1,267 yards in the game, which was the second-highest scoring affair between two ranked teams. Baylor was also involved in the highest scoring one, a 70-63 loss to West Virginia in 2012.

While the two Big 12 Conference teams put on an offensive show for the rest of the country to enjoy the truth is high-scoring games like Saturday's shootout are becoming more and more commonplace.

Nationally, Football Bowl Subdivision teams are averaging 30.3 points per game this season. That's up from 27.1 points per game in 2009 and 29.5 last year, with Spread offenses and stricter defensive rules contributing to the steady rise.

The Pac-12 leads all conferences with an average of 35.6 points per team per game. More surprisingly, the Southeastern Conference - home to Alabama's 14-13 win over Arkansas on Saturday - is the second-highest scoring conference with an average of 34.8 points per team.

The Big 12 is third at 34.1, though Baylor and TCU are likely to push that upward with their continued assaults on opposing defenses.

Some other notable statistics from the weekend:

RUNNING RAWLS: Central Michigan senior Thomas Rawls had the top rushing performance of the week, rushing 40 times for 270 yards as the Chippewas shocked Mid-American Conference power Northern Illinois in a 34-17 win. The win snapped a national-best 28-game home winning streak for the Huskies, who had also won 24 regular season conference games in a row before Saturday.

FLIP FLOP: A week after falling to second nationally in rushing, Indiana's Tevin Coleman regained the lead on Saturday with a 15-carry, 219-yard rushing performance in a 45-29 loss at Iowa. The junior is now averaging 176.7 yards rushing per game, narrowly ahead of Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon. Gordon is averaging 174.3 yards rushing per game after a 175-yard, four-touchdown performance in a 38-28 win over Illinois.

KICKING ACC: Led by Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo, the Atlantic Coast Conference is the home to some of the best field-goal kickers around this season. Aguayo is 13 of 13 on field goal attempts this season to lead the country, but he's far from alone - with four of the top five kickers all from the ACC. Pittsburgh's Chris Blewitt, Duke's Ross Martin and Wake Forest's Mike Weaver are all also perfect on field goals this season and rank third through fifth nationally. Ironically, the second-best kicker so far - Brad Craddock - plays for Maryland, which left the ACC for the Big Ten this year.

EASY PICKING: Louisville had a pair of interceptions in a 23-17 loss to Clemson on Saturday, and surprisingly neither came from safety Gerod Holliman. The sophomore leads the nation with seven interceptions in seven games this season, including a pair of games - against Virginia and Florida International - with two each.

POINTS A PLENTY: Three of the top quarterbacks in the country continue to play the most important role for their teams this season. Washington State's Connor Halliday, who threw for a Division I-record 734 yards last week, leads the country by being responsible for 24 points per game for the Cougars - thanks to his 28 touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Heisman Trophy hopefuls Marcus Mariota of Oregon and Dak Prescott of Mississippi State are second with an average of 23 points per game each.

              • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting football games this coming weekend........

-- Baylor (-8.5) @ West Virginia-- Dicey game for unbeaten Bears.

-- Georgia Tech (-2) @ North Carolina-- Option attack vs a putrid defense.

-- Georgia (-3.5) @ Arkansas-- Hogs got ten votes for top 25; they haven't won an SEC game in two calendar years.

-- Oklahoma State @ TCU (-9.5)-- Can Frogs bounce back from Baylor loss?

-- Notre Dame @ Florida State (-10.5)-- No shortage of hype for this one.

-- 49ers @ Broncos (-7)-- Patrick Willis missed second half Monday (toe).

                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

                13) TCU-Baylor game Saturday had 198 offensive plays; it was wildly entertaining. 15 NFL games this week had an average of 130.9 plays per game. More action in the college game, that much is undeniable. Fewer commercials, too.

                12) Arizona Diamondbacks did smart thing, hired Chip Hale as its new manager; he's a sharp guy, was recently bench coach for the A's and Mets.

                11) I may be late with this, but ESPN's E:60 ran an interesting show Monday on a wildly successful high school football coach in Alabama, whose personal life was completely messed up; he had six kids, three by his wife, three by his girlfriend.

The guy quit his job, couldn't get hired by anyone, until a high school in Georgia hired him and he turned the school's program around, but not before he had throat cancer and beat that, too. Show ends when his new team goes back to Alabama to play his former team. Anyway, if you see it on TV, its worth a watch.

                10) Two side notes to the program: The guy was such a good coach, he interviewed with Nick Saban to become an assistant at Alabama. Also, the woman who hired him in Georgia had this great quote-- picture a 60-ish woman with a southern drawl:

"We want a coach who can win foot-balllllllll games." Tremendous.

                9) Now that ESPN's Bob Ley grew his beard, he looks like the old actor Raymond Burr, who played Perry Mason and Ironside on successful old TV shows. .

                8) In their last three games, Washington Redskins lost field position by 25-18-15 yards. You cannot win this way, no matter how good you are.

                7) Speaking of the Redskins: before last night, the last time an NFL team scored a 75+-yard TD in last 2:00 of the first half was in 1994, when Heath Shuler threw one for the Redskins, one of only 15 career TD passes for the future congressman.

                6) A bank in Ann Arbor, MI wouldn't take Columbus Day as a holiday, because:

"We will not be closed for Columbus Day today because Columbus is in Ohio."

Seriously, this was the Bank of Ann Arbor. Glad I don't work there.

                5) Four San Francisco Giant pitchers gave up homers Sunday night; the last time that happened? Back in 2005, when the Giant catcher was....Mike Matheny.

                4) Paid crowd for the Florida Panthers' NHL game in south Florida Monday was 7,311, a new franchise low. I refuse to believe an NHL game in Saskatoon, Quebec
City or Hamilton wouldn't draw twice that much. Am I wrong?

                3) Hopefully Jimbo Fisher recruited a QB to play next season, because he'll be lucky if he has Jameis Winston under center for the rest of this season; no way will Winston still be in Tallahassee at this time next fall.

                2) 19 primetime NFL games this season: over is 15-4 in those games.

                1) If you own an NFL team and want to host a Super Bowl in your city, well, your team better be willing to give up a home game to play in London the next season- thats how the league office is extorting teams who want the cash cow of hosting the Super Bowl. Fewer and fewer teams want to go to London to play.

                • NCAAF opening line report: Hard to trust Notre Dame vs. Florida State

Yes, we’re heading into Week 8 of the 2014 college football season. But this week, we’re gonna party like its 1993.

Notre Dame at Florida State (-12.5)

Back then, unbeaten and top-ranked Florida State faced unbeaten and second-ranked Notre Dame in a late-season battle that the host fighting Irish won, 31-24. Notre Dame faltered a week later, though, losing to Boston College, while the Seminoles rebounded and ultimately won the national title.

Twenty-one years later, both are unbeaten again, and defending national champion Florida State will get to host Notre Dame this Saturday. The winner keeps alive hopes to reach the four-team playoff, and the loser is on the outside looking in. The No. 2 ‘Noles (6-0 SU) have been awful against the number, at 1-5 ATS, failing to cover as 23-point chalks in a 38-20 win at Syracuse last weekend. The fifth-ranked Irish (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) struggled Saturday, holding on for a 50-43 win over North Carolina as a 16.5-point favorite.

John Lester, senior lines manager for bookmaker.eu, is wary of both sides – but more so Notre Dame.

“We still haven’t seen that convincing, marquee win from Florida State. Perhaps they’ve just been going through the motions,” Lester said. “This could be the week, as Notre Dame isn’t nearly as deep from a talent perspective. The Irish always have their supporters, but they’re tough to trust right now, from a sharp standpoint.”

Texas A&M Aggies at Alabama Crimson Tide (-12.5)

Another week, another key clash in the Southeastern Conference, which continues to eat its own – with the exception of Mississippi State and Mississippi, whom A&M has lost to over the past two weekends to soil its season. On Saturday, the Aggies got drubbed at home by Ole Miss 35-20 as a 2.5-point fave.

Alabama bounced back from its loss at Mississippi by narrowly outlasting Arkansas 14-13, falling well short as a 9-point road chalk.

“Going back to last week, I called for the Aggies to get upset at home (by Mississippi,)” Lester said. “The Johnny Manziel hype is over; this is a bad defense with a decent offense. The Tide is poised for a breakout game, and this should be it. The Alabama offense will find its footing here.”

Kansas State Wildcats at Oklahoma Sooners (-9.5)

Oklahoma (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) has proven vulnerable the past two weekends, losing outright 37-33 at Texas Christian laying 3.5 points, then struggling to hold off overmatched Texas in a 31-26 win as a 16.5-point fave in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl. Kansas State (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS, coming off a bye, suffered its only loss against Auburn (20-14 catching 7 points at home last month). The Wildcats have cashed their last three in a row, most recently a 45-13 beatdown of Texas Tech giving 14 points at home.

“Is the blueprint out on Oklahoma?” Lester said. “Granted, it’s seen two very sound defenses recently, but Kansas State brings another one to the table, and Bill Snyder does a fine job getting his kids ready with extra preparation. The Wildcats aren’t the sexy team in this matchup, but I bet they keep it very close.”

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Texas Christian Horned Frogs (-9.5)

TCU (4-1 SU) is the only team in the nation with a perfect ATS mark, cashing in all five of its games – though Mississippi and Virginia are both 5-0-1. After upending Oklahoma 37-33 getting 3.5 points two weekends ago, the Horned Frogs blew a big lead and lost a shootout at No. 3 Baylor 61-58, but covered as a 7-point underdog.

Since losing its season opener at home to Florida State, Oklahoma State (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) has peeled off five consecutive SU wins. But the Cowboys have alternated ATS wins and losses all season, winning 27-20 at Kansas on Saturday, well short of covering as 19.5-point chalks.

“You always know what you’re going to get with Gary Patterson’s (TCU) squads – sound defense and sound special teams,” Lester said. “But the offense goes as the quarterback goes, and Trevone Boykin is erratic. This is the Cowboys’ first test since their opener against Florida State, so we will certainly see what they’re made of.”

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Louisiana-Lafayette at Texas State
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at Texas State Bobcats (-2.5, 63)

With a three-game losing streak now in the rearview mirror, the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns have a new goal: avoid getting blown out on the road. The Ragin' Cajuns look to atone for a pair of one-sided losses away from home as they face Texas State at Bobcat Stadium on Tuesday night. The Bobcats had a precarious opening to their Sun Belt Conference schedule last time out, fending off winless Idaho behind 284 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Terrence Franks.

Louisiana-Lafayette is on a high after defeating Georgia State 34-31 on a late touchdown pass from Terrance Broadway to Jamal Robinson. It was the perfect capper to a sensational performance from Robinson, who hauled in eight passes for 119 yards and two scores after missing the previous two games with a torn meniscus in his knee. Texas State will have revenge on its minds after getting throttled 48-24 in last season's encounter at Cajun Field.

                        TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

LINE HISTORY: The line has fallen a half-point since opening at Texas State -3. The over/under has held steady at 63.

INJURY REPORT: Louisiana-Lafayette: S Trevance Patt (ankle), RB Elijah McGuire (toe), LB Trae Johnson (knee) and LB Chris Hill (eligibility) are questionable. Texas State: LB Michael Orakpo (knee) is out.

WEATHER REPORT: Temperatures at Bobcat Stadium are expected to be in the high-70s with sunny skies and wind blowing to the northwest at 15 mph.

ABOUT LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE (2-3, 1-4 ATS, 3-2 O/U): Broadway had what was easily his most efficient game of the season against Georgia State, completing 20-of-26 passes for 216 yards and a pair of scores. The 22-year-old senior has taken a significant step back from each of the previous two seasons; he already has seven interceptions and his 5.68 yards-per-pass-attempt is well below his marks of 9.09 and 9.02 the past two years. Elijah McGuire (331 yards, three touchdowns) and Alonzo Harris (249 yards, four TDs) pace a two-headed rush attack.

ABOUT TEXAS STATE (3-2, 3-2 ATS, 3-1-1 O/U): The Bobcats would love nothing more than a nice, easy victory; they needed three overtimes to subdue Tulsa two weeks ago before clinging to victory last week over the woeful Vandals. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones was dreadful against Idaho, but remains on pace for a sensational season with 1,149 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. He has also recorded a rushing touchdown in four straight games, taking some of the heat off the running back tandem of Franks (408 yards, six TDs) and Robert Lowe (402 yards, two TDs).

                        TRENDS:

                        * Louisiana-Lafayette is 1-7 ATS in its last eight games following an ATS loss.
                        * Texas State is 2-5 ATS in its last seven home games.
                        * Under is 5-1 in the Ragin' Cajuns' last six road games.
                        * Over is 4-1-1 in the Bobcats' last six gams.

CONSENSUS: 61 percent of the vote is on Texas State at -2.5.

                          Tuesday's game
UL-Lafayette (-11) beat Texas State 48-24 LY; they were 21-26/360 passing, outgained Bobcats 572-196 in game that was 28-3 at halftime. ULL is 1-3 vs I-A teams, allowing 34+ points in all three losses- 48-20 loss to La Tech is a red flag. Texas State won its last two games by total of 8 points despite allowing 30+ points in each game- they're 0-4 in last four games as a home favorite. Ragin' Cajuns are 2-5 in last seven games as a road underdog, after being 15-2 in seventeen games before that. Sun Belt home favorites are 4-6 vs spread in conference games this year.

                              • Bad Company - Week 8

                                October 14, 2014

As conference season continues to roll on, the pointspreads aren’t as heavy as they were during non-league play. There are still plenty of awful teams out there looking to get through a miserable season and gives bettors a chance to fade them. We’ll start this week’s action inside the ACC with a team that has lost 11 consecutive conference games and is receiving plenty of points on the road.

                                N.C. State (+17) at Louisville – 3:30 PM EST

The wheels have officially fallen off the Wolfpack wagon as N.C. State coach Dave Doeren suspended seven players for Saturday’s game at Louisville for a BB gun incident. The Wolfpack has shot themselves in the foot plenty of times this season, including blowing a 24-7 lead to top-ranked Florida State before allowing 49 points in the final three quarters. N.C. State hasn’t won a conference game under Doeren, while posting an 0-11 SU and 3-8 ATS record inside the ACC since the start of last season.

The Wolfpack travels to Louisville, as the Cardinals fell to 2-2 in ACC play after a 23-17 defeat at Clemson as 8 ½-point underdogs. Louisville’s defense has been solid all season long, not allowing more than 23 points in any of its seven games, while cashing the ‘under’ six times. In Bobby Petrino’s last 20 games as a home favorite at Louisville, the Cardinals have covered 17 times, including a 2-1 ATS record this season.

Cincinnati (-14) vs. SMU – 3:30 PM EST

Looking at this matchup, some would ask if the wrong team to fade is listed with SMU owning an 0-5 record. The Mustangs have been abysmal offensively this season, but showed some signs of life in a 45-24 setback at East Carolina two weeks ago to cover as a hefty 40-point underdog. The 24-point output by SMU doubled the amount of points it scored in the previous four games combined. Going back to the negatives with the Mustangs, this team has allowed at least 43 points in all five losses, while their only cover of the season came against ECU.

Cincinnati’s defense has been shredded all season, allowing 146 points in its past three defeats, including giving up 55 points in last week’s loss at Miami. The Bearcats have been outgained on the ground by at least 200 yards in the previous three games, while allowing 335 yards to the Hurricanes last week. From a pointspread standpoint, UC hasn’t covered in the past four contests, including an 0-2 SU/ATS record on the road. Cincinnati beat SMU last season at home, 38-35, but didn’t cash as seven-point favorites.

Ball State (+9 ½) at Central Michigan – 3:30 PM EST

Ball State dominated Colgate in its season opener, but the Cardinals haven’t won since, dropping five straight games. The Cards did cash as double-digit underdogs at Iowa and Toledo, but have allowed 75 points in the past two losses to Army and Western Michigan. Ball State’s defense is giving up nearly 200 yards a game on the ground, as this team has gone backwards since going 7-1 in MAC play last season.

Central Michigan has bounced back since a three-game losing streak following a 2-0 start, beating Ohio and Northern Illinois in the past two weeks. In those victories, the Chippewas rushed for 234 and 283 yards, which could spell major problems for Ball State’s anemic run defense. Central Michigan has plenty to play for against Ball State, considering the Cardinals have won four straight meetings in the series.

Kent (+5) vs. Army – 3:30 PM EST

The Golden Flashes are winless through six games, while not eclipsing the 17-point mark in any contest this season. Kent has been outgained in each loss, as the Golden Flashes were destroyed by previously winless UMass last week, 40-17 as three-point favorites. The lone game that Kent actually cashed came as 26-point underdogs at Northern Illinois in a 17-14 setback, while dropping 14 of its past 17 games dating back to last season.

Army has won just once in the past five games since a season-opening victory over Buffalo, while losing outright as a road favorite at Yale and Wake Forest. This seems like each team is fade material in this matchup, but the Black Knights are 2-0 against MAC opponents, beating Ball State and Buffalo, but each victory came at home. Army has dropped 18 straight road games with its last victory in a true away contest coming in 2010 at Kent State, so tread lightly here.

Georgia State (+17 ½) at South Alabama – 7:30 PM EST

This Sun Belt matchup won’t get a lot of attention on Saturday, as Georgia State has dropped five consecutive games. The Panthers have given up at least 34 points in all six contests, while coming off a 52-10 home defeat to Arkansas State last week. However, Georgia State has covered each of its two road games at Washington (+34 ½) and Louisiana-Lafayette (+16), while going 6-1 ATS in the away underdog role since the start of last season.

South Alabama returns home off back-to-back road victories at Idaho and Appalachian State, but the Jaguars scored a combined nine points in home losses to Georgia Southern and Mississippi State. The Jaguars have performed well since the end of last season in the favorite role, posting a 6-0 SU/ATS record.
