      • Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrappingup a sports Saturday.....

        13) Last time Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State all lost on the same day was in 1988; this was a very bad day for the Big 14, but Rutgers beat Howard, so they have that. Central Michigan won 38-17 at Purdue. Oy.

        12) Memo to whoever the coach is at Michigan next year: recruit a QB who can throw the ball. Maybe Brady Hoke will go on to have a great career in Ann Arbor, but if he does, he better as good a QB as the one he had at Ball State, who was a lot better than the one he has now.

        11) USC 13, Stanford 10-- Big win for Trojans was overshadowed by USC AD Pat Haden coming out of the press box to bitch at officials on the USC sideline. No one on TV could ever remember an AD pulling a stunt like that before.

        10) How has Stanford not retired #7? You know, John Elway's number.

        9) BYU 41, Texas 7-- Cougars hammered Texas 41-20 LY, running ball for 550 yards- they only had 248 in this game, which was 6-0 at half, but natives are going to get restless with losses like this, while Charlie Strong seems to be running guys out of the program.

        8) Washington 59, Eastern Washington 52-- Eagles are I-AA; game was 37-31 at the half. Huskies struggled with Hawai'i last week, but 2-0 is 2-0.
        7) Nebraska 31, McNeese State 24-- This would've gone to OT, if not for a great catch/run by Ameer Abdullah in the last minute to save the day. Joe Dumars is the most famous alum of McNeese; they're I-AA in football, not basketball.

        6) Maryland 24, USF 17-- Terps are first team in three years to win a game when they were -5 or worse in turnovers. In other words, they got lucky.

        5) North Carolina 31, San Diego State 27-- Aztecs gained 509 yards in Chapel Hill, but threw a pick-6 early on, then another INT in the end zone in last minute. This was a game San Diego State should've won.

        4) South Carolina 33, East Carolina 23-- Pirates outgained Carolina 453-441; Dawgs-Gamecocks is an interesting tilt next weekend. ECU is pretty good.

        3) Illinois 42, Western Kentucky 34-- Illini had two defensive TDs, WKU had one. Oklahoma State transfer Lunt was 35-50/456 passing for Illinois.

        2) Iowa 17, Ball State 13-- Hawkeyes scored two TDs in last 3:00 to avoid losing to David Letterman's alma mater- this was an ugly day for the Big 14.

        1) How do the PGA Tour honchos expect fans to watch golf today, when Phil Mickelson quit the tournament in Colorado, saying he needed to get ready for the Ryder Cup in three weeks? How else would you get ready for a golf event than by playing golf? Mickelson is probably in Las Vegas betting football today.

        • Lines hit the board for Week 3 schedule

Online sportsbook BetOnline has released odds for this week's slate of games in college football.

Of note, the Oregon Ducks will host the Wyoming Cowboys as massive 43-point favorites. The Ducks looked impressive in Week 2's 46-27 victory over the Michigan State Spartans. The Ducks improved to 1-1 ATS after failing to cover as 52-point favorites versus South Dakota State in Week 1.

Elsewhere, the Georgia Bulldogs have opened as 4-point road favorites at South Carolina. The Bulldogs are off a bye week after opening the season with a 45-21 win versus Clemson. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks have been an ice-cold wager, starting the season 0-2 ATS.

Here's a look at the opening lines for the Top 25 programs in the AP poll:

          Wyoming at (2) Oregon (-43)

Southern Mississippi at (3) Alabama (-49)

          Tennessee at (4) Oklahoma (-21)

          (6) Georgia at (24) South Carolina (+4)

          (8) Baylor at Buffalo (+30.5)

          (9) USC at Boston College (+20)

Purdue at (11) Notre Dame (-29.5)

          (12) UCLA at Texas (+6)

          Army at (15) Stanford (-27.5)

          (16) Arizona State at Colorado (13.5)

East Carolina at (17) Virginia Tech (-10.5)

          Central Florida at (20) Missouri

          (21) Louisville at Virginia (+8.5)

Kent State at (22) Ohio State (-26.5)

          Houston at (25) BYU (-14.5)

          • NCAA opening line report: Georgia favored in Week 3's marquee matchup

We’ve been treated to two weeks of numerous big games to open the college football season. It steps down a couple notches in Week 3, but there are still some intriguing contests on the docket that merit a good look.

The best matchup by far, and not surprisingly, comes in the Southeastern Conference Saturday. Sixth-ranked Georgia (1-0 SU and ATS) travels to take on No. 24 South Carolina.

The Bulldogs are coming off a bye after ripping then-No. 16 Clemson 45-21, easily cashing as 10-point home chalks. The Gamecocks (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS) got pasted in their season opener, losing 52-28 as a 9.5-point home favorite against Texas A&M, then held off East Carolina 33-23 Saturday laying 14 points at home.

Georgia opened as a 4.5-point favorite, and the number is now as high as 6, which surprised Jay Kornegay, the vice president of race and sports operations at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

“Normally you wouldn’t see a number like this for the road team,” Kornegay said. “History is on South Carolina’s side, but the Gamecocks have looked awful this year, and their defense hasn’t shown up.”

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-28)

With the return of quarterback Everett Golson, who sat out all of last year on academic suspension, Notre Dame is looking much more like the team that had a perfect regular season two years ago. The Irish are 2-0 SU and ATS, shutting out Michigan 31-0 Saturday as a 4-point home fave. On the flip side, the Boilermakers (1-1 SU and ATS) just got rolled at home by Central Michigan, 38-17 as a 3-point favorite.

“Purdue was supposed to show improvement this year, and we’re still waiting,” Kornegay said. “Notre Dame looked impressive, but I have a feeling that Michigan is further down than most expected. These are two teams going in opposite directions.”

UCLA Bruins (-7) at Texas Longhorns

UCLA is 2-0 SU and ranked No. 12 in the AP poll, but the Bruins haven’t covered in either of their first two games, including Saturday’s 42-35 win over Memphis, when they were laying 22 points at home.

However, Texas (1-1 SU and ATS) could be in a worse spot, coming off an incredibly embarrassing 41-7 home loss to Brigham Young as a one-point favorite.

“UCLA has offensive line problems, and the run game is nonexistent. But the Memphis performance doesn’t surprise us, as the Tigers are an underrated team. The UCLA results are not as bad as they seem,” Kornegay said. “Texas has a plethora of injuries on the O-line, and the QB (David Ash) is still out. New coach Charlie Strong has issues right now, but he’s probably more concerned about developing his culture than winning games.”

Tennessee Volunteers at Oklahoma Sooners (-21)

Tennessee is off to a 2-0 SU start (1-1 ATS), including a 34-19 home win Saturday over Arizona State, with the Vols falling just short as 16-point chalk.

But Tennessee isn’t getting much respect against fourth-ranked Oklahoma (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS), which is coming off a 52-7 pounding of Tulsa as a 24-point chalk.

“Tennessee has looked lights-out and has dramatically improved. However, the Vols are still very young, they have a new O-line, and this is their first road game,” Kornegay noted. “Oklahoma looks all the part of a top-five team. The Sooners haven’t played anyone yet, but the victory over Louisiana Tech - which scored two backdoor TDs late – looks more impressive after La. Tech destroyed Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend.”

            • Top 25 Betting Recap - Week 2

              September 8, 2014

Week 2 of the 2014 NCAA football betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the rankings and see how they did from an ATS perspective in this go around this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU & ATS Results)

              1) Florida State (W-L vs. Citadel 37-12)
Don't let the final score fool you. The Seminoles scored on all six of their possessions with their first-team offense on the field.

              2) Alabama (W-L vs. Florida Atlantic 41-0)
Alabama would have covered this game had Mother Nature not cut it short.

              3) Oklahoma (W-W vs. Tulsa 52-7)
The Sooners have arguably been the most impressive team in the nation through two games.

              4) Oregon (W-W vs. Michigan State 46-27)
Oregon had a real test against Sparty, but when this team kicked it into gear, it was all over but the crying for the Big Ten boys.

              5) Auburn (W-W vs. San Jose State 59-13)
Three men ran for at least 90 yards for the Tigers against SJSU.

              6) Michigan State (L-L vs. Oregon 46-27)
A disastrous day for the Big Ten could have been at least somewhat salvaged had the Spartans not blown their lead against the Ducks.

              7) Ohio State (L-L vs. Virginia Tech 35-21)
The Urban Meyer retirement watch is on for what suddenly looks like it could be a long season for the Buckeyes.

              8) Georgia (Bye)
Head Coach Mark Richt has his Dawgs legitimately ready for a run at the SEC title.

              9) Baylor (W-W vs. Northwestern State 70-6)
No Bryce Petty? No problem. The Air Bear trumps all at this level.

              10) Stanford (L-L vs. USC 13-10)
Going 2-for-8 in the red zone is going to get you killed against a team as good as USC.

              11) UCLA (W-L vs. Memphis 42-35)
The Bruins have had one great offensive games, one great defensive game, and absolutely nothing near one good game.

              12) LSU (W-W vs. Sam Houston State 56-0)
On a day when FCS teams challenged some, the Bayou Bengals had no problems with the Bearkats.

              13) Texas A&M (W-W vs. Lamar 73-3)
The Aggies have earned their way into the Top 10 in the land, though beating Lamar by 70 doesn't move our dial at all.

              14) USC (W-W vs. Stanford 13-10)
The Trojans dynasty effectively ended when they lost at home against Stanford as 37-point favorites all those years ago. Maybe it started again by going on the road and upsetting the Cardinal.

              15) Notre Dame (W-W vs. Michigan 31-0)
The last game in the rivalry against the Wolverines was one of the best ever for the Golden Domers.

              16) Arizona State (W-W vs. New Mexico 58-23)
We're still not sure why the Sun Devils traveled to New Mexico, but they never had any troubles in the game.

              17) Ole Miss (W-W vs. Vanderbilt 41-3)
The Commodores have been terrible this year, but the Rebs have quietly taken care of business against two teams who were bowl bound last year in a big time way.

              18) Nebraska (W-L vs. McNeese State 31-24)
Ameer Abdullah saved the day for the Cornhuskers, who have a lot of work to do before going to Fresno next week.

              19) Wisconsin (W-L vs. Western Illinois 37-3)
The Badgers took a while to get going, but once they did, the Leathernecks just didn't have the physical nature to stick around.

              20) Kansas State (W-L vs. Iowa State 32-28)
Jake Waters had a huge game in a big comeback for KSU against a Big XII foe on the road.

              21) South Carolina (W-L vs. East Carolina 33-23)
A week after allowing all those points to Texas A&M, the Carolina defense really didn't look all that much better, relatively speaking, against East Carolina.

              22) Missouri (W-W vs. Toledo 49-24)
The Tigers faced a tough game that could have been a trap at the Glass Bowl, but they were workmanlike in their effort and easily got the 'W'.

              23) North Carolina (W-L vs. San Diego State 31-27)
The Tar Heels were in a lot of trouble for a big period of time against San Diego State, but they lived to tell about it.

              24) Clemson (W-W vs. South Carolina State 73-7)
That's much better out of the Tigers, who mustered nothing in the second half two weeks ago at Georgia.

              25) Texas (L-L vs. BYU 41-7)
If the Longhorns never see BYU again, they'll probably be happy. Unfortunately, the team that is coming to town next is a legit Top 10 teams (UCLA), and it's one which issued the biggest ever beating at Memorial Stadium back in '97.

              • NCAAF Week 3 line watch: It's time to take the Aggies

                Spread to bet now

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Utah State Aggies (-14)

Utah State is currently a 14-point home favorite over Wake Forest, but I expect the line to rise throughout the week. Utah State took a ton of money in its season opener at Tennessee, but they got crushed 38-7. The Aggies bounced back nicely last week in their 40-20 win over FCS Idaho State, and they should play even better in this game.

Wake Forest is a bad team. The Demon Deacons are void of talent and they are in the process of learning new head coach Dave Clawson’s system. Wake Forest was awful in their first game, a 17-10 home loss to UL-Monroe after gaining a total of 94 yards of offense. They beat a terrible FCS Gardner Webb 23-7 last week, but it’s back to reality in the thin air and altitude at Utah State Saturday. This line will close higher than two touchdowns, so lay -14 now.

                Spread to wait on

Central Florida Knights (+9.5) at Missouri Tigers

There was a flood of money against Missouri last week for their game at Toledo. That money was dead wrong as the Tigers rolled to an easy 49-24 win. Bettors don’t like to lose money against a team two weeks in a row, so I don’t expect strong anti-Missouri money this week.

The current line has Missouri -9.5 at home, so waiting for a possible +10 to pop up is the correct betting strategy for this game. Central Florida lost its season opener against Penn State in Ireland but the Knights had last week off, so they’ll come with a strong effort in this game. Penn State came back and won last week, so maybe UCF’s 26-24 loss wasn’t so bad. Professional bettors will wait to hit this game in hopes the public ticks the line up to double digits.

                Total to watch

Nevada Wolf Pack at Arizona Wildcats (57)

Nevada and Arizona both come into this game off poor offensive outings. Nevada scored just 24 points in its home win over Washington State while Arizona only scored 26 points in its win at Texas-San Antonio. But those low-scoring outputs should be attributed to the defenses they played.

This total is projected to open in the high 50s, according to the early odds in Las Vegas. If the total comes out lower than expected, there will be some value on the Over. Arizona has scored 35 points or more in five of its last seven home games, while Nevada allowed 47.3 points per game on the road last season.

Baylor (-47) vs Northwestern State, 45-0

                  Top 25 Notes
-- It was a topsy-turvy day in the Top 10, as teams went 5-3 straight up and 4-4 ATS. Michigan State, Ohio State and Stanford each lost straight up, with the Buckeyes setback most damaging since it was against an unranked opponent and at home. Southern California (2-0 SU/ATS) likely moves into Top 10 after winning on road versus Cardinal. Oregon (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) did nothing but help themselves by throttling Sparty.

-- Nebraska (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) survived a HUGE scare against McNeese State, barely scraping by 31-24 with a late touchdown inside the final minute.

-- Auburn (2-0 SU/ATS) covered its 13th consecutive game by paddling San Jose State by a 59-13 count. They're on a bye next week before heading to Manhattan for a battle with Kansas State (2-0 SU, 0-2 ATS).

-- One thing which has been consistent for K-State - the over. It has cashed in each of the Wildcats' first two games.

-- Texas (1-1 SU/ATS) will fall out of the Top 25 after getting hammered in Austin by Brigham Young (2-0 SU/ATS), who could very well find their way into the rankings. The Cougars not only have won and covered each of their first two games, but they've done so away from Provo.

-- Top-ranked Florida State (2-0 SU, 0-2 ATS) turned aside FCS opponent The Citadel, but it wasn't pretty. The Seminoles scratched out a 37-12 win, but left the field again with more questions than answers.

-- The game between Florida Atlantic (0-2 SU, 0-1 ATS) and No. 2 Alabama (2-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) was called with over seven minutes left in regulation due to lightning, with the Crimson Tide leading 41-0. The game was ruled a 'no play' because it didn't go the required 55 minutes or more to become official.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- It was a disastrous day for the Big Ten, as the conference not only had both Michigan schools and Ohio State lose on the same day for the first time since Sept. 17, 1988. In addition, Northwestern (0-2 SU/ATS) and Purdue (1-1 SU/ATS) each lost at home to opponents from the Mid-American Conference. Overall, the Big Ten was a very underwhelming 2-11 ATS.

-- The SEC was better, going 12-1 SU and 8-4 ATS, with one fewer game ATS due to Alabama's no play. In addition, Mississippi (2-0 SU/ATS) won a league game with Vanderbilt (0-2 SU/ATS), keeping one of the league losses in house.

-- The most impressive league performance of the day might have been the ACC, which had a signature win from Virginia Tech (2-0 SU/ATS). Overall, the league was 12-1 SU, with the only setback actually a league loss for Boston College (1-1 SU/ATS) against Pittsburgh (2-0 SU/ATS).

-- The Big 12 managed a 7-2 straight-up record with a 5-4 mark ATS, and 'over' going 4-1 in games against FBS opponents.

-- Lastly, the Pac-12 posted a 10-2 straight-up record, and a marginal 5-6-1 ATS mark. The 'over' ended up 6-4 in league play.

                  Mid-Major Report

-- It was a good day for some MAC teams, with Central Michigan (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) winning outright at Purdue, and Northern Illinois (2-0 SU/ATS) registering a straight-up win at Northwestern as a touchdown dog. And Ball State nearly made it three upsets against the Big Ten with a narrow 17-13 loss at Iowa. Overall, the conference was just 3-9 SU and 5-7 ATS, but the wins were pretty impressive.

-- Conference USA has a strong Week 2, with league mmebers going 5-5 SU, but an impressive 9-1 ATS. Texas-San Antonio (1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS) kicked it off Thursday with a close home loss to Arizona, and Louisiana Tech (1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS) scored the biggest upset win at Louisiana, winning 48-20. The Bulldogs have covered back-to-back games after their backdoor cover last weekend in Oklahoma.

-- The Sun Belt posted an impressive 7-3 ATS mark, including Old Dominion (1-1 SU/ATS) keeping it close against NC State (2-0 SU, 0-2 ATS).

-- It was a so-so day for the AAC. Temple (1-1 SU/ATS) was unable to carry over momentum from last week's win at Vanderbilt, falling at home to Navy (1-1 SU/ATS). Memphis 1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS) showed conference pride by nearly pulling an upset at UCLA, losing 42-35. South Florida (1-1 SU/ATS) lost at home to Maryland, but was able to cover as an 11-point home dog. It wasn't so good for Connecticut (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS), who was able to pull out a 19-16 win against Stony Brook, but looked awfully ugly in doing so.

                  Bad Beats

-- Most people missed it, but Hawaii (0-2 SU, 2-0 ATS) backdoored Oregon State. The Beavers entered the fourth quarter up 38-7, covering as a 10-point favorite, but they were outscored 23-0 in the final 15 minutes.

-- The game between SMU and North Texas entered the fourth quarter with the Mean Green up 29-0. They scored a touchdown at 9:18 to make it 36-0, still well under the total of 45. The final 2:59 saw a total of 13 points, including an SMU touchdown :00 remaining on the clock to push the total over.

-- It certainly can be considered a bad beat, especially if you had Alabama laying 41 points. The game between FAU and Alabama was canceled with 7:31 to play, and the Tide up 41-0. Games must go at least 55 minutes to be official in Vegas, and this one fell short by 151 seconds.

-- If you had Iowa State on the moneyline, they ended up blowing a 28-20 lead by getting outscored 12-0 in the fourth quarter. K-State went ahead to stay with 90 seconds left in regulation.

-- Kansas held a 34-7 lead as a 24-point favorite heading into the fourth quarter, but they were outscored 21-0 by SE Missouri State.

-- It might not be considered a bad beat, per se, but Baylor (2-0 SU/ATS) came in as a 47-point favorite over Northwestern State, but they were without starting QB Bryce Petty (back) and their top two WRs Antwan Goodley (quadriceps) and Levi Norwood (wrist). They didn't skip a beat, hanging 70 points on their FCS opponent with their second-team offense.

                  • June Jones resigns as SMU coach

                    September 8, 2014

DALLAS (AP) - SMU coach June Jones resigned Monday only two games into his seventh season at the school, citing unspecified personal reasons for the decision.

The resignation, effective immediately, came after the Mustangs scored only one touchdown while losing their first two games this season.

''It was a very difficult decision for me to make, as you can imagine. I have devoted my life for the last 50 years to playing and coaching this game and it has been a great journey,'' Jones said in a statement released by the school. ''This job has a lot of demands, as you know, and along with that journey comes a price that is paid. I have some personal issues I have been dealing with and I need to take a step away so I can address them at this time.''

The 61-year-old Jones, who was 36-43 at SMU after nine seasons at Hawaii, didn't elaborate on what those personal issues were. The former NFL coach didn't return a message left on his cell by The Associated Press.

Jones' agent, Leigh Steinberg sent out a tweet Monday in which he wrote that Jones ''had felt for some time he had accomplished mission to turn around program and needed a break.''

Defensive coordinator Tom Mason, who was Jones' associate head coach, was elevated to the top job for the rest of the season.

Athletic director Rick Hart said in a campus news conference Monday night that a national search for the next coach would begin at the appropriate time. He said Mason could be considered in that search.

''There's no urgency to get that process under way,'' Hart said. ''But we'll certainly do that the right way at the right time.''

Hart also reiterated what he said in an earlier statement that Jones' ''decision to resign was his own'' and that it was something the coach had been contemplating for some time. Hart didn't go into details about the personal issues that led to the coach's departure.

''Only that that was something June decided he needed to focus on that it was at least impacting, he felt, his ability to provide his best to the team,'' Hart said. ''We're going to respect that.''

The Mustangs are off this week, providing some extra time to make adjustments after Jones' departure. Their next game is the home opener Sept. 20, against seventh-ranked Texas A&M.

SMU hadn't been to a bowl game in 25 years before 2009, when the Mustangs went 7-5 in Jones' second season and then beat Nevada 45-10 in the Hawaii Bowl. The last postseason game before that had been before SMU was the only team ever given the NCAA's so-called death penalty, and had its program shut down for two seasons, 1987 and 1988.

The Mustangs went to four consecutive bowls under Jones, a streak that ended last season when they were 5-7 after losing their last two games. Even after missing a bowl, Jones was given a three-year contract extension after the season through 2017.

''June Jones has been one of the most influential individuals on SMU football since it returned to the Hilltop in 1989,'' Hart said. ''In addition to re-establishing SMU as a winner, June has helped shape the university and athletics department in ways which benefit student-athletes and coaches across all sports.''

SMU opened this season with a 45-0 loss at Baylor, and then dropped a 43-6 game at North Texas on Saturday when the Mustangs' only touchdown came on the last play of the game.

Before a 34-0 loss at Houston in the 11th game last season, a Jones-coached college team with his ''Run and Shoot'' offense had never been held scoreless.

Jones was 112-84 overall in 16 seasons on the college level, including a 76-41 record from 1999-2007 at Hawaii, where he played quarterback and began his coaching career as quarterbacks coach in 1983.

He was 22-36 as an NFL head coach, with Atlanta from 1994-96, and 10 games as San Diego's interim coach in 1998.

Hawaii was coming off an 0-12 season when Jones was hired in 1999, and then went 9-3 in his first season - the biggest season-to-season improvement in NCAA history. The Warriors were 12-0 during the 2007 regular season and got to the Sugar Bowl, where they lost to Georgia before Jones left Hawaii for the SMU job.

The Mustangs were 1-11 in Jones' first season, the same mark as the year before he got there, before the turnaround to four consecutive bowl appearances.

                    • Texas QB David Ash out indefinitely

                      September 8, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas coach Charlie Strong said Monday quarterback David Ash is out indefinitely and that the Longhorns will push ahead with Tyrone Swoopes as the starting quarterback.

Ash missed Texas' 41-7 loss to BYU on Saturday because of concussion symptoms. Swoopes was 20 of 31 passing for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his first career start.

Ash has only appeared in four games since the start of the 2013 season. He was cleared to return this season and played most of Texas' season-opening win over North Texas. Ash later reported headaches and dizziness after the game and hasn't returned. He was on the sideline for the BYU game last week.

Texas (1-1) plays No. 12 UCLA (2-0) this Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

                      • NCAA lifts Penn State's postseason ban

                        September 8, 2014

Penn State students turned campus into the site of a peaceful and jubilant celebration after the football program had its bowl ban lifted.

They chanted Joe Paterno's name and, of course, threw in ''We Are'' for good measure on Monday night.

The thousands that rallied were in stark contrast to the mess 2 1/2 years ago, when disgruntled students took to the streets and wracked their college town in violence after Paterno's dismissal.

Good times - and big games - are back at Penn State.

''We were sitting in a computer lab, and we just started running around telling people, letting them know, just going crazy,'' fifth-year senior Brad Vasko said. ''We bought a keg. Immediately.''

The Nittany Lions got out from under the most severe on-field sanctions imposed two years ago over the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal, learning Monday that the NCAA will allow Penn State to compete in this year's postseason and that all scholarships will return in 2015.

The surprise announcement, linked to progress the school has made reforming its athletic program, moved the university a step farther away from the fallout from Sandusky, the former assistant coach convicted of sexual abuse of 10 boys, including acts at university facilities.

The scandal badly tarnished what had been one of college sports' most respected programs, led to charges of a criminal cover-up against former university administrators Graham Spanier, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley - whose cases are still pending. Paterno, the Hall of Fame coach, was fired.

Penn State had been halfway through a four-year postseason ban handed down during the summer of 2012. Some of the 40 scholarships the program was originally docked were restored earlier than expected a year ago.

The university still must pay a $60 million fine, vacate 111 wins that came under Paterno, plus another victory under interim coach Tom Bradley, and the school will remain under monitoring.

The decision by the NCAA's Executive Committee followed a recommendation by former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, whose second annual report as Penn State's athletics integrity monitor concluded the university was in compliance with a 2012 agreement and consent decree.

''Senator Mitchell's report and recommendations, along with the actions taken by the NCAA today, are a recognition of the hard work of many over the past two years to make Penn State a stronger institution,'' said Penn State President Eric Barron, who took over in February.

Mitchell said the school had made progress toward implementing a new human resources system, ''fostering an ethical culture'' and improving security at its sports facilities. His own five-year oversight role, scheduled to continue until 2017, might end earlier as a result of the progress that has been made, he said.

Mitchell said his recommendation was focused on aspects of the penalties that affect student-athletes, many of whom stayed at Penn State despite the ability to transfer without penalty.

''In light of Penn State's responsiveness to its obligations and the many improvements it has instituted, I believe these student-athletes should have the opportunity to play in the postseason should they earn it on the field this year,'' Mitchell wrote.

His 58-page report said incidents involving the football team this year included only minor infractions.

In State College, junior kinesiology major Daniel Zambanini said seeing the news on television gave him a moment of shock. He said removal of the postseason ban ''just takes that weight off our shoulders, and you can kind of just be Penn State once more.''

The penalties against Penn State were unprecedented in many ways and, because of that, not well-received by many in college sports. While lack of institutional control was cited, Penn State's missteps had nothing to do with competition and the areas that usually fall under the NCAA's jurisdiction.

''The biggest problem I had was the effect on the student athletes in the program,'' said former Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe, who worked in NCAA enforcement during the 1980s, including on the SMU football death penalty case. ''They (Penn State's players) weren't involved in a program that was cheating against their rivals and now all of a sudden they're not able to participate in postseason.''

The NCAA cutting the penalties down is also unusual. Beebe and Mike Gilleran, a sports law and ethics professor at Santa Clara University who worked in NCAA enforcement during the 1970s and `80s, said they were concerned the latest move would set another precedent.

''So what happens now when one of your old schools,'' Gilleran said, referring to Beebe's time in the Big 12, ''gets whacked? `OK, we'll take that penalty with the understanding that we will be model citizens and we will expect the treatment that Penn State got.'''

Beebe said rolling back the sanctions gives the appearance of the NCAA acknowledging it might have overreached by getting involved with the Sandusky scandal.

''My first blush is I don't know how it could be perceived differently,'' he said. ''`I'd be very curious to dive into (the NCAA's) rationale.''

On Friday, the NCAA said in a Pennsylvania state court filing it is willing to let the state government control the $60 million fine Penn State is paying under the consent decree. The NCAA wants the judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by state officials seeking to enforce a 2013 state law that requires the money remain in the state.

If the judge agrees, the NCAA said it also will move to end a federal lawsuit against Gov. Tom Corbett and others that challenges that same law.

Penn State went 15-9 during the first two seasons of the sanctions under coach Bill O'Brien, who was hired to replace Paterno.

Paterno was the winningest coach in major college football history when he was fired not long after Sandusky, his former defensive coordinator, was charged in November 2011. Paterno died in January 2012 and lost his record when the NCAA vacated those 111 victories

O'Brien left for the Houston Texans of the NFL after last season and James Franklin was hired away from Vanderbilt to take his place.

''A lot of good people have done a lot of great things over there over the last couple of years to make sure that they've learned from the past mistakes and understood that that is a special place,'' O'Brien said. ''I feel very happy for Penn State and mostly I'm happy for the players and the coaching staff that's there now.''

Penn State is 2-0 this season. If the Nittany Lions win the East division, they will be eligible to play in the Big Ten championship game.

Franklin said in a statement the team appreciates the opportunity.

''This team plays for each other. We play for Penn State, our families, the former players, our students, alumni, fans and the community,'' he said.

                        • USC AD Pat Haden fined $25K

                          September 8, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Pac-12 Conference has fined Southern California athletic director Pat Haden $25,000 for coming down to the field at Stanford Stadium on Saturday and confronting game officials.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement Monday that Haden's conduct was inappropriate. Scott says ''such actions by an administrator in attempt to influence the officiating, and ultimately the outcome of a contest, will not be tolerated.''

Haden, who is also a member of the new College Football Playoff committee, jogged onto the field after getting a text message from a member of USC's staff during the Trojans' 13-10 win over Stanford. He held an animated discussion with officials on the sideline between the third and fourth quarters.

USC coach Steve Sarkisian said he had requested Haden's presence on the sideline. Haden and Sarkisian apologized for their actions Sunday.

                              • See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

                                Lookahead spot

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start and dreams of SEC grandeur are starting to creep in. The Bulldogs have their first taste of SEC competition in Week 4, making the trip to Death Valley to play the LSU Tigers. But before MSU tests its conference might, it travels to little ole South Alabama as a 14.5-point favorite in Week 3.

The Bulldogs rolled over Southern Mississippi but found themselves up against it versus UAB last weekend. Mississippi State was actually out-gained 548-516 by the Blazers, and can’t afford to look past the jacked-up Jaguars – and to LSU - this weekend.

South Alabama, which defeated Kent State 23-13 as a 2-point favorite in Week 1, enjoyed a bye week last Saturday and has been preparing for MSU since the ink dried on the schedule. Hell, there’s a billboard on Interstate-65 outside of Mobile simply stating “It’s Here, Sept. 13, 2014.” Oddsmakers opened MSU as 15.5-point road chalk but that has since been trimmed to 14.5, with that pesky half-point hook standing strong.

                                Letdown spot

The USC Trojans jumped into the national title conversion with a hard-fought 13-10 victory as 3-point road underdogs at Stanford in Week 2, going from 20/1 to 12/1 to win the college football championship. The Trojans’ emotions are running high after Andre Heidari’s field goal gave USC the edge late in the fourth quarter.

Southern Cal will have to bottle that excitement during a cross-country plane ride, traveling all the way to the East Coast for a date with Boston College Saturday. The Eagles are getting a lofty 17.5 points from the oddsmakers, but a look at the early line moves could give USC backers reason for concern. Books opened Southern Cal as big as a 19.5-point road favorite but have cut that spread down two points as of Tuesday, with early action expecting the Trojans to come out flat.

“I think it’s natural for that to be a concern,” USC head coach Steve Sarkisian told the Orange County Register of a possible letdown in Boston. “As I’ve said all along, whether it’s a rival or not, a conference opponent or not, the way we prepare is what is critical. That shouldn’t change based on the opponent. That being said, I’m still learning this football team.”

Note: USC will be without senior starting LB and team captain Hayes Pullard for the first half Saturday due to suspension.

                                Schedule spot

Another team making a long road trip this weekend is the Arizona Cardinals. They’re traveling to New Jersey for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff – 10 a.m. in Arizona – with the New York Giants on a short week, coming off a 18-17 win over San Diego (failed to cover -3) on Monday Night Football.

Arizona will not only deal with the long flight and time change but the early forecast is calling for un-desert like conditions in the Meadowlands Sunday. There’s a low pressure system projected to hit the East Coast this weekend and it brings wind and rain with it. The Cardinals are also 0-3 ATS in their last three contests coming off a Monday nighter.

The Giants need all the help they can get. New York’s new offense sputtered versus Detroit in Week 1, with Eli Manning throwing for just 163 yards and two interceptions Monday. Books opened the Giants as 3-point favorites but that spread is stinking like a stone. As of Tuesday afternoon, New York can be had as low as -1 and will be an underdog by the time Sunday rolls around.
