Week One Review: Sumlin makes the difference at Texas A&M

College football is mostly about two things. Quarterbacks. And the Southeastern Conference.

Nowhere did those two themes intersect better than in the first game of the season -- Texas A&M at South Carolina.

College football moved on from the Johnny Manziel era, leaving his every off-field move and on-field gesture as a concern for the NFL. But he still had the gravitational pull of a black hole in the offseason, pulling every question about Texas A&M into this singularity: How could the Aggies possibly replace Johnny Football and still be relevant?

    It was the wrong question.

Give Manziel his due, but the immediate success of Texas A&M in the SEC had less to do with his improvisational skills and more to do with the man in charge of it all -- coach Kevin Sumlin. The question should have been: Have SEC foes figured out how to stop Sumlin?

Lesson No. 1 from the opening weekend of college football: Never doubt Sumlin's scheme.

He created a just-add-water Heisman candidate in sophomore Kenny Hill, who completed 44 of 60 passes for 511 yards, breaking the school single-game passing record of Johnny ... uh, what was that guy's name again?

Hill also threw for three touchdowns as he and the Aggies carved up the No. 9 Gamecocks 52-28.

Now, the opening weekend of the season always comes with a caveat -- avoid drawing too many conclusions based off one game. But the first impression screams that A&M's impressive performance wasn't a fluke.

Hill showed poise in the face of South Carolina's blitz. He is working behind an experienced offensive line, led by the team's next first-round left tackle -- Cedric Ogbuehi. Hill worked fast in the hurry-up offense and got the ball out quickly to an array of talented wideouts, including senior Malcome Kennedy and fab freshmen Ricky Seals-Jones and Speedy Noil. What we're saying is that the first-game numbers are sustainable.

Get used to the Aggies being back in the discussion in the wild SEC West and beyond. Their next four games are against Lamar, Rice, at SMU, and Arkansas. A&M should be 5-0 heading into an Oct. 4 game at Mississippi State, which is most definitely a team you don't want to sleep on.

Until then, just don't call the new quarterback Kenny Football. Perhaps Heis-Ken will do.

Five things we learned in week one

    1. This is a corollary to the Kevin Sumlin clause: Never, ever, underestimate a Rich Rodriguez offense. He lost All-American running back Ka'Deem Carey and quarterback B.J. Denker, returning a Pac-12-low 23.6 percent of his offense. In Arizona's first game, a 58-13 win over UNLV, the Wildcats rolled up a school-record 787 total yards, 425 coming off the arm of redshirt freshman Anu Solomon. This Thursday's game at UTSA, which opened with a 27-7 win at Houston, could be better than you think.

    2. Oklahoma State's defensive front is not good, it's great. Going against Florida State's best-in-the-nation offensive line, the Cowboys allowed just 106 rushing yards and had five tackles for loss, including two sacks from emerging sophomore star lineman Emmanuel Ogbah. After its close-call loss to No. 1 Florida State, young Oklahoma State has time to build before taking on a back-loaded schedule.

    3. UCLA's 2014 potential problem is its 2013 Achilles' heel. Playing without two injured starters on the offensive line, the Bruins scored only one offensive touchdown in a 28-20 win at Virginia. The Cavs overwhelmed UCLA with their blitzes, coming up with 11 tackles for loss, including five sacks. Good news: UCLA might get back center Jake Brendel (knee) and left tackle Simon Goines (ankle) very soon. "I know that there is going to be a lot of concern about our offensive line, and it's warranted at this point," coach Jim Mora said. "Those of us that know we have a good group know that we just need to play better."

    4. Senior quarterback Blake Sims got more than a courtesy start at Alabama. Everyone expected Florida State transfer Jacob Coker to win the job, but Sims' four years in the system trumped Coker's three months on campus. Sims was 24-for-33 for 250 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception, in a 33-23 win over West Virginia. It was a respectable effort that should earn encores in the next two games against weaklings Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss.

    5. It's going to be a wild ride in 2014. OK, we already knew that. But when the two teams most favored to get to the first title game of the College Football Playoff era -- Florida State and Alabama -- each struggle in openers against unranked opponents ... it's a clear sign that crazy twists and turns, and breathtaking freefalls, await.

    Five important returns

    1. Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson. Returning from academic exile, Golson looked as good as the new FieldTurf in Notre Dame Stadium, passing for 295 yards and running for 41. He had two long on-the-mark touchdown passes that each traveled about 60 yards in the air. It's in the DNA of coach Brian Kelly to fling the ball all over the yard, and Golson's arm and experience give him a chance to get back to those roots.

    2. Texas quarterback David Ash. Last season's concussion problems, followed by a spring foot injury, put Ash on the long road back. If the Longhorns are to have any success in coach Charlie Strong's debut, Ash has to stay healthy and be effective. He was sporadic in a 38-7 win over North Texas, completing 19 of 34 passes for 190 yards, and taking a couple of big hits that had Burnt Orange Nation holding its breath. Honorable mention: Texas linebacker Jordan Hicks, coming off an Achilles injury, made his first career interception. He is the glue guy of the defense.

    3. Arizona receiver Austin Hill. The senior, who missed all of last season because of an ACL injury, came back in style with a 92-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown on the first play of the second half against UNLV. He stiff-armed a defender after the catch to gain the separation he needed to race in untouched the rest of the way. Hill leads one of the deepest groups of receivers in the country.

    4. Maryland receivers Stefon Diggs/Deon Long. The Terps should have one of the best receiving corps in the conference -- that's now the Big Ten, remember -- led by Diggs and Long, who returned to the starting lineup in a rout of James Madison after rehabbing together from broken legs suffered at midseason last year. Diggs had five catches for 53 yards and returned a kickoff 59 yards. Long made two catches for 48 yards, including a 41-yard score.

    5. Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. Fired as USC's head coach during last season, Kiffin was back on the sideline, calling plays under the watchful eye of Nick Saban. The Tide gained 538 yards against West Virginia, which is good, but Bama can do better. Alabama must stop embracing the "Dinosaur Age" of offense -- Saban's words -- and use more of the fast-paced, no-huddle attack that sparked the Tide late in the second half and helped get quarterback Blake Sims in rhythm.

    Five players to watch

    1. Georgia running back Todd Gurley. The junior had 198 yards rushing and a 100-yard kickoff return in a win over 12th-ranked Clemson. He'll end the two-year drought of no running back in the first round of the NFL Draft.

    2. Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg. The sophomore threw for 454 yards and directed the game-winning drive that ended in a field goal in a 26-24 win over UCF in Dublin. Your No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft ...

    3. Michigan receiver Devin Funchess. Now wearing Michigan's famed No. 1 jersey and no longer mis-labeled as a tight end, Funchess (6-5, 230) is still a matchup nightmare. He caught seven passes for 95 yards and three scores vs. Appalachian State.

    4. BYU quarterback Taysom Hill. He ran for 1,344 yards last season, the question being whether he could improve his 53.9 completion percentage. Well, he was 28-for-36 in the opening win over UConn. This week: At Texas.

    5. Oklahoma State all-purpose back Tyreek Hill. It took one game to make the junior college transfer the nation's most exhilarating player. The fastest man in college football posted 278 all-purpose yards, and his value as a decoy made the Cowboys' offense all the more unpredictable.

    Five best Week 2 games

    1. Michigan State at Oregon, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. ET., FOX. Thanks to its backfield depth, Oregon moved Byron Marshall to an all-purpose role in the opener, and he responded with 89 yards rushing and 138 yards on eight receptions over South Dakota. His versatility is worth watching against the Spartans' stout defense in a game with major College Football Playoff implications.

    2. USC at Stanford, USC at Stanford, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. Steve Sarkisian's new-to-USC up-tempo offense was an instant success, with the Trojans running a school-record 105 plays en route to 701 yards in a laugher against Fresno State. Stanford yawns. If the Cardinal can handle Oregon's attack, it won't be awed by USC's.

    3. Michigan at Notre Dame, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET., NBC. A night game in South Bend wraps up this historic series until at least 2020 -- probably much longer, given the rhetoric on both sides. Enjoy while you can.

    4. Virginia Tech at Ohio State, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. The Buckeyes could end up being just fine with redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett at quarterback, although his inexperience and shaky play from the offensive line led to conservative play-calling against Navy. A fast, physical Hokies defense, led by defensive tackle Luther Maddy, cornerback Kendall Fuller and safety Kyshoen Jarrett, will require more creativity from Urban Meyer.

    5. East Carolina at South Carolina, Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU. The Gamecocks have to show resiliency after the humbling loss to A&M, while the Pirates are looking for big-bowl legitimacy, fueled by the prolific pass-catch combo of Shane Carden and Justin Hardy.

Senior Analyst Rob Rang's five takeaways on how prospects performed in their season openers. Players listed chronologically by game time this week, including position, school, year (Height, weight and current NFLDraftScout.com overall rating and by position).

    1. QB Jameis Winston, Florida State (6-4, 235, #6/#2)

Winston's stats in Saturday night's victory over Oklahoma State included two interceptions, but that doesn't tell the full story. Both picks were thrown into single coverage, with defenders making spectacular plays on the ball. While Winston did stare down his targets, he generally makes excellent decisions with the ball and did so throughout this game, peppering the Cowboys with well-thrown short and intermediate routes and driving strikes down the alleys. He showed good touch on traditional deep balls, including a pair of 50-plus-yard completions in the first half.

    2. WR Kevin White, West Virginia (6-3, 209, #296/#36)

White matched Alabama's preseason All-American Amari Cooper catch for catch, showing impressive hand-eye coordination and leaping ability to haul in several contested throws. The 6-foot-3, 209 pound White possesses a legitimate NFL frame with broad shoulders and good overall musculature. White used his size to overpower defenders on occasion, breaking tackles to gain yardage after the catch. He also showed agility and strength to gain a free release, smooth acceleration to push corners deep and the burst out of his breaks to gain separation.

    3. QB Brett Hundley, UCLA (6-3, 227, #19/#3))

Hundley was held without a touchdown pass against Virginia. He did score on a six-yard scamper and completed 20 of 33 passes for 242 yards and showed composure down the stretch, rifling deep passes to the sidelines. And when protected, Hundley generally threw the ball well. He showed improved poise in the pocket from a year ago, scanning the field and occasionally stepping up in the pocket before delivering confident passes. He failed to look off defenders, at times, which contributed to three of his passes being deflected at the line of scrimmage.

    4. RB Paul James, Rutgers (6-0, 210, #16 RB in 2016)

James, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior, routinely ran through arm tackles in Rutgers' victory over Washington State in Seattle, showing impressive leg drive, forward lean and enough burst to gain yardage in chunks. He lowers his shoulders on contact and spins off hits, keeping his feet moving and eyes searching for daylight. He showed better acceleration than his frame would indicate, breaking free for a 56-yard gain.

    5. LT Cedric Ogbuehi, Texas A&M (6-5, 300, #3/#1)

A boisterous crowd at South Carolina on Thursday seemed to contribute to Ogbuehi getting an occasional late start. Rather than panic and lunge at his opponent, Ogbuehi showed off his rare skill set, accelerating while turning his shoulders to remain square to the pass rusher before extending his vine-like arms to latch on. Ogbuehi's agility and reach make him reliable in pass protection. He also showed quickness and agility in the running game and drove his assignment off the ball to clear the lane for A&M's first touchdown of the season, a 1-yard plunge off left tackle by Tra Carson.

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

            Team to watch: Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

            This week: -14 vs. Idaho

The Warhawks are coming off an impressive 17-10 victory over Wake Forest of the ACC last Thursday. They limited Wake to a mere 94 total yards of offense and won the time of possession battle by almost 11 minutes, despite forcing just one turnover. Junior safety Mitch Lane was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after returning an interception 31 yards for a touchdown at the Demon Deacons’ expense.

On Saturday, Louisiana-Monroe is going up against an Idaho squad that unexpectedly has no games under its belt in 2014. The Vandals were supposed to pay a visit to Florida last weekend, but that contest was postponed due to severe thunderstorms. As such, they have not yet been able to tinker with an expected dual-quarterback rotation of redshirt freshman Matt Linehan and former starter Chad Chalich. Those two QBs will be without standout receiver Dezmon Epps, who was dismissed from the team this offseason.

Team to beware: Kent State Golden Flashes

This week: +3 vs. South Alabama

These are trying times for the Golden Flashes, whose season is off to a tough start both on and off the field. Starting center Jason Bitsko was found dead in his apartment last month and it remains to be seen if Kent State will recover. The team kicked off its 2014 campaign last weekend and lost as a 3-point home favorite to Ohio via a 17-14 decision.

The Golden Flashes were without 2013 leading rusher Trayion Durham and he’s questionable for Saturday’s game due to a foot injury. How bad did it get in Durham’s absence? Kent State rushed for 31 yards on 22 carries against Ohio.

South Alabama, which is contesting its season opener, was 5-0 ATS in its last five outings of last season. Kent State, meanwhile, is 0-6-1 ATS in its last seven home games and 1-5 ATS in its last six overall.

            Total team: Nevada Wolf Pack

This week: 63 vs. Washington State

The Under is 7-0 in Nevada’s last seven overall (its game last week against Southern Utah went Under the total by a half point), but that may be about to change. That’s because the Wolf Pack are going up against Washington State Friday. Mike Leach’s Cougars lost to Rutgers 41-38 last Thursday even though Connor Halliday completed 40 of 56 passes for 532 yards and five touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Washington State is a serious question mark. Pieces are rotating all over the place, with depth chart changes at the top, bottom, and everywhere in between being made at tackle, end, linebacker and cornerback.

Nevada’s Jerico Richardson (13 catches, 177 yards vs. Southern Utah) and Co. should be able to capitalize on this game of musical chairs.

              TEXAS TECH at UTEP

                Top 25 Betting Recap - Week 1

                September 2, 2014

Week 1 of the 2014 NCAA football betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the rankings and see how they did from an ATS perspective in this go around this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result-ATS Result)

                1) Florida State (W-L vs. Oklahoma State 37-31)
The Noles were challenged, but they remain Unconquered for the 17th time in a row after surviving Ok State.

                2) Alabama (W-L vs. West Virginia 33-23)
Blake Sims is going to need a lot of work if the Tide are going to win the National Championship once again.

                3) Oklahoma (W-L vs. Louisiana Tech 48-16)
The Sooners were the only team in the Top 3 to really take care of business without a shadow of a doubt.

                4) Oregon (W-L vs. South Dakota 62-13)
Things are about to get real in Eugene, as the Spartans are bringing one of the best defenses in America to town next week.

                5) Auburn (W-W vs. Arkansas 45-21)
Nick Marshall was suspended for the first half, but the Tigers were still the only Top 5 team in the land to cover the spread.

                6) Ohio State (W-W vs. Navy 34-17)
This one was much closer than the final score suggested. OSU's defense needs help up front, but JT Barrett should be alright as a starter.

                7) UCLA (W-L vs. Virginia 28-20)
The Bruins needed three defensive TDs in the first half to avoid getting upset in Charlottesville.

                8) Michigan State (W-W vs. Jacksonville State 45-7)
Connor Shaw is now 13-1 as a starter, including 2-0 against Top 10 teams going into next week's battle with Oregon.

                9) South Carolina (L-L vs. Texas A&M 52-28)
South Carolina deserves to plummet clear out of the Top 25 after a showing like that on opening night.

                10) Baylor (W-W vs. SMU 45-0)
If Bryce Petty's back injury is serious, the Bears are in a lot of trouble.

                11) Stanford (W-W vs. UC-Davis 45-0)
The Cardinal have picked up where they have left off defensively for the last few seasons.

                12) Georgia (W-W vs. Clemson 45-21)
Todd Gurley had his biggest day as a Dawg, and the argument could be made that he is the Heisman frontrunner after Week 1.

                13) LSU (W-W vs. Wisconsin 28-24)
It was a struggle early on, but the Bayou Bengals showed grit to tame the Badgers.

                14) Wisconsin (L-L vs. LSU 28-24)
The Badgers have an easy enough schedule to run the table from here, and they may rue the day they blew a double-digit lead to LSU.

                15) USC (W-W vs. Fresno State 52-13)
Consider this a warning shot. The Trojans are on the verge of being super legit once again under Coach Sark.

                16) Clemson (L-L vs. Georgia 45-21)
The Tigers were level at 21-21 at halftime against the Dawgs, but they never had a shot in the second half.

                17) Notre Dame (W-W vs. Rice 48-17)
Anyone who thought that Everett Golson would have some rust after a year off had better go back and watch this tape.

                18) Arizona State (W-L vs. Weber State 45-14)
Are we the only ones wondering if ASU might have at least a twinge of trouble against New Mexico next week?

                19) Ole Miss (W-W vs. Boise State 35-13)
Five forced turnovers were the key to victory for the Rebs, but they turned it over three times, too. That won't cut it in the SEC West.

                20) Texas A&M (W-W vs. South Carolina 52-28)
No team will take a bigger leap in the Top 25 this week than the Aggies, who have a look of a legit Top 10 team after one game.

                21) Kansas State W-L vs. Stephen F. Austin 55-16)
The start was a bit slow for the Cats, but Jake Waters and the crew never struggled with SFA.

                22) Nebraska (W-W vs. Florida Atlantic 55-7)
The Children of the Corn put up 784 yards, the most ever by a team in the Big Ten.

                23) North Carolina (W-L vs. Liberty 56-29)
The Tar Heels looked miserable defensively against Liberty. They'll get a better challenge next week from San Diego State.

                24) Texas (W-W vs. North Texas 38-7)
Texas was workmanlike against North Texas, and now, it has its sights set on revenge against BYU from last year's shellacking in Provo.

                25) Washington (W-L vs. Hawaii 17-16)
Not the way that Chris Petersen wanted to start his career at U-Dub, but at least it was a win.

Big Ten Report - Week 2

                  September 3, 2014

                  GAME OF THE WEEK

                  Michigan State (+12) @ Oregon - 6:30 PM EST
There was a moment when the Spartans' season flashed before their eyes as QB Connor Cook took a scary hit to the knee in the 1st half against FCS Jacksonville State. Luckily, Cook returned unscathed and finished 12-of-13 passing for 285 yards and 3 TD in the 45-7 drubbing over the Gamecocks. MSU coasted to a victory behind Cook, 211 rush yards, and a dominating defensive performance. The degree of difficulty goes up dramatically this week at Oregon, the fourth-ranked team in the nation and one of the toughest venues to play in. Oregon had an easy victory in week one over FCS South Dakota. Heisman candidate QB Marcus Mariota led the way with 267 pass yards, 43 rush yards, and four total TD's in the 62-13 win. The Ducks rushed for 293 yards on 7.7 YPC en route to a +303 yard advantage over the outmatched Coyotes. It will be a true matchup of strength vs. strength on Saturday as Oregon's fast-paced offense takes on an MSU defense that has ranked at or near the top of the nation over the past few seasons. Oregon depends on its rushing attack averaged 274 YPG on 6.3 YPC last year, while MSU allowed just 86 rush YPG on 2.8 YPC. MSU's defense hasn't allowed an opponent to reach exceed 28 points since 2011. If they can hold Oregon to 30 points or less, they have a great shot at covering considering that Oregon is just 2-7 SU & 1-8 ATS when scoring fewer than 30 points since the beginning of the 2009 season. The Ducks are just 6-13-1 ATS in the last 20 at home as a favorite of 10 points or more. They are also 0-7 ATS their last seven as a home favorite between 10 and 20 points. Michigan State is 3-1 since 2006 as an underdog of 10 points or more. They are 7-4-1 ATS in their last 12 regular season road games against non-Big Ten teams.

                  BEST OF THE REST

Ohio State (-11) vs. Virginia Tech - 8:00 PM EST
The J.T. Barrett era in Buckeye land didn't exactly get off to a flying start against Navy last week. OSU was losing 14-13 midway through the third quarter before a 80-yard touchdown pass from Barrett to WR Devin Smith gave OSU the lead for good. Navy is no pushover, and we give Barrett and co. credit for getting through a rough start and coming alive down the stretch, giving the Buckeyes a comfortable 17-point win. Navy's vaunted triple-option rushing attack gave OSU's defense some trouble, tallying 370 rush yards on 5.9 YPC, giving up a number of big plays. The Bucks buckled down in the second half, forcing and returning a fumble for a TD in the third quarter and allowing just 36 rush yards in the 4th quarter. OSU now takes a step up in competition as they host the Hokies of Virginia Tech this Saturday. VA Tech had a ho-hum 34-9 victory over FCS William & Mary last week. The Hokies had +295 yards, +12 first downs, and didn't allow the Tribe to reach the end zone. New QB Michael Brewer completed 23-of-30 passes for 251 yards and freshman RB Shai McKenzie had 109 rush yards on just nine attempts. A stout defense has always been a staple in Blacksburg under head coach Frank Beamer and this year should be no different, presenting the first difficult task for OSU's QB Barrett. The redshirt freshman will have to shake off the jitters as this game will be in prime time broadcasted by ESPN. The good news is that OSU is playing at the Horseshoe, where the Bucks are 15-0 under Urban Meyer. They are also 15-1 SU and 11-5 ATS in the last 16 home games against non-conference foes. VA Tech has been a double-digit underdog just six times since 2000 and is 4-2 ATS in those situations. The Hokies are just 1-9-1 ATS in the last 11 road games against non-conference opponents. This is the first ever meeting between these two schools.

Michigan (+3.5) at Notre Dame - 7:30 PM EST
The Wolverines were clearly ready for their "rematch" with Appalachian State after the famous loss to the FCS program in 2007. Michigan jumped to a 35-0 halftime lead behind three TD passes to WR Devin Funchess. QB Gardner finished 13-of-14 for 173 yards and 3 TD while RB's Green and Smith combined for 285 rush yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns. Sure, it was against an FCS opponent, but it was a promising start for a team that has struggled with offensive consistency over the past few seasons. This week they travel to South Bend for a meeting with rival Notre Dame. The Irish got QB Everett Golson back from his 2013 suspension and his presence cannot be understated. Golson led the Irish to the 2012 BCS championship and is 11-1 overall as a starter. He showed his worth last week with 295 pass yards, 41 rush yards, and 5 total TD in the 48-17 win over Rice. Notre Dame will be without three preseason starters for this matchup after dismissals to DT Ishaq Williams, WR DaVaris Daniels, and CB KeiVarae Russell, among others, for an academic scandal. Michigan will get starting center Graham Glasglow back this week after he served his suspension sitting out against Appalachian State. Motivation will not be lacking for either side here as this is the final scheduled meeting between the two rivals (have met every year since 2002 and 28 times since 1980). Michigan is 6-2 SU & ATS in the last eight meetings with the Golden Domers, but both of the losses were in South Bend. The Wolverines are just 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS the last two years against ranked opponents - the one SU win was at home against Notre Dame last year. The underdog has won seven of the last 10 meetings outright.

Penn State (-14) vs. Akron - 12:00 PM EST
The James Franklin era got started off with a bang as PSU survived Central Florida in Ireland last week. In a game that went back-and-forth, UCF took a lead with 1:13 remaining on a TD run by QB Justin Holman. PSU QB Hackenberg took the Nittany Lions down the field and put them in position for a 36-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. It would've been a devastating loss for PSU considering they dominated the stat book. PSU had a +265 yard advantage and +13 first downs. UCF's stout defense was able to hold PSU to just 57 yards on 2.0 YPC. Hackenberg was able to lead the way for PSU as he completed 32-of-47 passes for 454 yards. The defense also had a great day, holding UCF to just 24 rush yards on 29 carries (0.8 YPC). PSU had a difficult travel schedule as they return from Ireland (10+ hour flight) to prepare for the Zips of Akron. Akron finished just 5-7 last year, but returned nearly every key position player and have been tabbed as a contender for the MAC title this season. They got off to a promising start last week in a 41-0 win over FCS Howard. Talented Jr. QB Pohl tossed for 304 yards and 4 scores and the defense held Howard to just 216 total yards and 3-of-18 on 3rd down. James Franklin will have to fight off jet-lag and avoid a letdown performance here because this version of Akron has enough talent to pull off an upset. The Zips are 0-4 all-time against PSU, including a 31-7 loss the last time here (2009). They've dropped 20 straight road openers by an average of 28 PPG and they are 0-17 since 1998 against Big Ten squads. PSU is just 3-7 ATS in the last 10 home games as a double-digit favorite against non-conference opponents.

Iowa (-17) vs. Ball State - 3:30 PM EST
The Hawkeyes knew they were going to get a fight against Northern Iowa; but for a team that has aspirations of a Big Ten West title, getting outgained by an FCS program and barely holding them off is a bit concerning. Still, a win's a win and Iowa did a lot of things right. QB Rudocks was 31-of-41 for 250 yards with 2 scores and 0 INT, the stable of RB's pounded for 151 yards on 4.2 YPC, and the defense held the Panthers to just 25 rush yards and 13 total first downs. The renovated defense will have to work on limiting the big plays after UNI QB Kollmorgen (380 pass yards) hooked up with WR Johnson (205 rec. yards) for a couple of big gains. Next up is a battle with MAC member Ball State. BSU finished 10-3 last year but lost top QB Wenning (35 TD, 7 INT in 2013) and WR Snead (106 rec, 15 TD) so the offense that averaged 38.5 PPG in 2013 is expected to take a bit of a step back. The Cards looked good last week, albeit against FCS Colgate, so take it with a grain of salt. BSU tallied 514 yards and 29 first downs in the 30-10 win. RB's Banks and Edwards combined for 243 rush yards on 35 carries, helping ease along QB Ozzie Mann who made his first career start. Iowa and BSU have met twice previously. The Cardinals have dropped both prior meetings (2005 & 2010) by a combined score of 101-0. Ball State is 2-16 SU in its last 18 road openers including 5 straight by an average of 16 PPG. They are 7-3 ATS since 2006 against Big Ten schools, including three SU wins (all against Indiana). Iowa is just 7-20 ATS since 2006 as a favorite of 14 points or more. The Hawkeyes are 4-0 SU but 0-4 ATS the last four games preceding their annual rivalry matchup with Iowa State.

Maryland (-12.5) at South Florida - 3:30 PM EST
There isn't too much to be learned about Maryland from a 52-7 blowout of James Madison last week, though Maryland will surely be looking for more efficiency from its passing attack after C.J. Brown completed just 11 of 24 attempts. He offset his poor passing performance with three rushing scores as the Terps gashed the Dukes for 285 rushing yards. WR's Stefon Diggs and Deon Long returned to the field for the first times since each suffered a season ending injury early in 2013. They combined for seven receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown (Diggs also returned a kickoff for 59 yards). Defensively the Terps forced three turnovers and held JMU to just 4-for-19 on 3rd down. Next up they travel to Tampa for their first road game of the year at South Florida. USF just just 5-19 over the past two seasons, but there was reason for optimism considering the Bulls return 10 starters on offense. The Bulls didn't exactly look much improved in their debut against FCS Western Carolina last week. Western Carolina jumped out to a 14-3 lead before USF woke up (won 36-31). Western Carolina had +14 first downs and tallied 454 yards against USF, holding the TOP advantage by +15 minutes. USF QB White completed just 9-of-26 passes for 181 yards and an INT. Freshman RB Marlon Mack burst onto the scene with 275 rush yards (11.4 YPC) and 4 TD. Maryland is just 2-4 SU & ATS in the last six non-conference road games. The Terps are just 4-8 ATS in the last 12 as a double-digit road favorite (first time since 2008). The Bulls are 12-6 ATS in the last 18 as a double-digit underdog, including 4-2 ATS in 2013.

Minnesota (-16) vs. Middle Tennessee State - 3:30 PM EST
The Gophers took their time getting started offensively against FCS Eastern Illinois last week, scoring just before halftime to take a 14-0 lead against the Panthers. They ended up winning 42-20, but the Gophers were outgained by 71 yards and had 9 fewer first downs. Many still question the passing ability of QB Leidner after a 9-of-17, 144 yard performance against EIU. Leidner did rush for two scores, but it doesn't appear that he'll put much fear into opposing secondaries this season. Leidner's shortcomings in the passing game allow opposing defenses to load the box against Minnesota's rushing attack - the strength of this team. As a result, the Gophers had just 182 rush yards on 40 carries (4.5 YPC) - that includes a 42-yard TD scamper by RB Edwards. Eastern Illinois exposed some flaws, and Middle Tennessee State will try to take advantage this weekend. MTSU put up 61 points in the victory over FCS Savannah State last week, scoring six rush TD, one pass TD, one defensive TD, and one special teams TD. We're not putting too much stock in that performance considering Savannah State is one of the worst FCS programs. Still, it was a promising start for Blue Raiders QB Grammer, who completed 15-of-17 passes for 250 yards and 1 TD in his starting debut. MTSU has some familiarity with the Big Ten, losing to Minnesota by just seven points in 2010, and Purdue by just 3 points in 2011. Eleven of MTSU's last 15 road openers have come against Big Five conference schools. The Raiders are an impressive 9-1-1 ATS in those 11 games. The Gophers are 13-7 ATS in the last 20 games as a favorite of 14 points or more - though they're on an 0-4 run at home in that situation.

Northwestern (-7) vs. Northern Illinois - 3:30 PM EST
After a disastrous end to last season and some tumultuous news from training camp this offseason, the nightmare continued for Northwestern in a seven-point loss to Cal to kick off the 2014 season. A loss to a team coming off a 1-11 campaign isn't a step in the right direction for the Wildcats and now there's a hint of desperation in the Evanston air. Northwestern QB Siemian was an inefficient 23-of-44 for 229 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT and the rushing attacked mustered just 108 yards on 36 carries (3.0 YPC). The defense did all it could to hold a potent Cal offense, but the Bears still gained 414 yards and achieved 23 first downs. Northern Illinois has gone an impressive 46-10 over the last four seasons, winning two bowl games and even earning an invite to the 2012 Orange Bowl. Star QB Lynch is gone, but the Huskies still return 14 starters, including nine on offense. They got off to a strong start with a 55-3 win over Presbyterian. NIU outgained the FCS foe by a staggering 508 yards and had +30 more first downs. The Huskies have one of the better rushing attacks in the nation and Northwestern will have its hands full this weekend. The Wildcats are on a 0-5 SU run at home and 0-7 ATS run at home. They are on an extended run of 17-34 ATS as a home favorite. The Huskies are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 as an underdog. NIU has won four of the last seven against the Big Ten and they are 13-4 ATS in the last 17 against the B1G.

Illinois (-6) vs. Western Kentucky - 12:00 PM EST
Illinois definitely made it interesting against FCS Youngstown State last Saturday. The Illini looked absolutely abysmal for the first three-and-a-half quarters before a TD with 8:50 remaining gave them the advantage for good. The Illini were outgained, had fewer first downs, and had 20 fewer minutes TOP. The good news for Illinois is that new starting QB Wes Lunt looked very good in his debut. Lunt completed 24-of-38 passes for 285 yards with 4 TD and 0 INT. The bad news is that Illinois gained just 78 rush yards on 3.5 YPC and the defense allowed 203 rush yards. There's still a lot of work to do before Illinois is even considered as a contender in the Big Ten West. If they play like they did last week against Western Kentucky this week, they'll be ripe for an upset. WKU looked very good in its debut against Bowling Green last week. BGU was tabbed to be one of the better teams in the MAC this season and the Hilltoppers absolutely destroyed them. WKU jumped out to a 38-10 lead and coasted to a 59-31 victory. The 'Toppers gained 708 total yards and 40 first downs. QB Doughty was extremely efficient, completing 46-of-56 passes for 569 yards with six TD's and 0 INT. WKU allowed 466 yards on defense, but if they can replicate that offensive performance like the one against Bowling Green, the Illini will have problems keeping pace. Illinois is just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 as a home favorite. Western Kentucky is 20-6 ATS in their last 26 road games.

Purdue (-3) vs. Central Michigan - 12:00 PM EST
The Boilermakers quickly matched their win total from 2013 with a win over Western Michigan last week. The 43 points scored exceeded any Purdue total from 2013 - it also represented 24% of 2013's point total. QB Etling tossed for 181 yards on 50% completions with 2 TD and 0 INT. RB's Mostert and Hunt combined for 224 yards on 37 carries and 2 TD. There are some causes for concern starting with the defense. The Boilers allowed 456 yards and 24 first downs to Western Michigan - a middle-of-the-pack MAC offense. WMU RB Franklin rushed for 163 yards and 3 scores, repeatedly gashing this Purdue defensive front. The Boilers came away with a W, and ow they've got a chance to build a little momentum and confidence against another directional Michigan. Central Michigan opened its season with a narrow victory against FCS Chattanooga. Chattanooga actually had a 16-0 lead before CMU went on a 20-0 run to close it out. It wasn't a sharp performance by any means, but the Chippewas churned out 150 rush yards and had an efficient day from QB Rush (15-of-26 for 173 yards and 2 TD) and that was enough to get the W. Central Michigan is 3-19 in its last 22 against the Big Ten - playing at least one school every season. They are on a 6-3 ATS run against Big Ten schools, earning 3 SU wins in the process (Indiana in 2008, Michigan State in 2009, and Iowa in 2012). Purdue is just 3-9 ATS in the last 12 home games.

Nebraska vs. McNeese State - 12:00 PM EST
Nebraska put together the most complete performance of any Big Ten team in week one. Florida Atlantic was overmatched in almost every way as the Huskers dominated their way to a 55-7 win. The Huskers gained 784 yards of offense and achieved 35 first downs. They rumbled for 498 rush yards and five rushing touchdowns behind 232 rush yards by star RB Abdullah. QB Armstrong Jr. added 271 pass yards and two scores. Defensively they held the Owls to just 200 yards and 13 first downs. FAU QB's Johnson and Hankerson struggled against this Huskers pass defense, completing just 11-of-30 passes for 95 yards. This week they get McNeese State, who finished 10-3 last year and has upset an FBS school in each of the past two seasons (Middle Tennessee State in 2012 and South Florida in 2013).

Wisconsin vs. Western Illinois - 12:00 PM EST
The loss to LSU won't affect Wisconsin's ability to win the conference, but the complete letdown in the 2nd half and the utter lack of a passing attack certainly presented some red flags. Wisconsin built a 24-3 lead and appeared to be in complete control of the game. LSU mounted a comeback in the 2nd half and took away Wisconsin's rushing attack. QB McEvoy couldn't capitalize as he finished just 8-of-24 for 50 yards and 2 2nd half INT's. Coach Gary Anderson has stated that backup QB Stave (2013's starter) has some issues and is not available to play, so McEvoy's job is not in jeopardy at the moment. Star RB Gordon finished with 140 rush yards, but had just four attempts in the 2nd half - after the game the coaches cited a hip injury being the reason for that. Gordon won't miss any time, but the Badgers need to put together more of a passing attack if they want to compete for a Big Ten title. This week they get a refresher against FCS Western Illinois at Camp Randall, where they've won 18 straight home openers by an average of 20 PPG.

Rutgers vs. Howard - 12:00 PM EST
The Scarlet Knights made a memorable debut of their 2013 season, going across the country and winning at Washington State, 41-38. Rutgers scored a TD with 3:24 left to take the lead, then held off WSU for the final minutes to seal the victory. QB Nova completed 16-of-27 passes for 281 yards and two scores (1 INT) while RB James churned out 173 rush yards and 3 scores. Defensively they took their lumps against Mike Leach's aerial attack as WSU completed 40-of-56 passes for 532 yards and five scores. Credit the Knights for winning the shootout and starting off their inaugural season in the B1G with a win. This week they get FCS Howard at home. Howard was shut-out by Akron last week, 41-0.

                  Indiana - Bye Week
Indiana has one of the better offensive line units in the nation and they used it to perfection last week against FCS Indiana State. The Hoosiers ran the ball 69 times for 455 yards (6.6 YPC) and four scores. RB's Coleman and Roberts combined for 376 of those rush yards and QB Sudfeld only had to attempt 18 passes. If Indiana has successfully instilled a rushing presence into its offensive arsenal - they could be a serious sleeper in the Big Ten. The defense also had a promising effort, albeit against an FCS program, as it allowed just 170 total yards and 10 first downs. They get a bye week before traveling to Bowling Green next week.

                    Arizona at Texas-San Antonio

                    September 1, 2014

College football is back as this week’s Thursday night matchup is much more intriguing after the Week 1 results than it was when the schedule was released. Arizona will face its first road game in a rematch of one last season’s non-conference games while Texas-San Antonio will look for another major upset after a big win last Friday in Houston. Here is a look at both teams playing Thursday night in college football.

Match-up: Arizona Wildcats at Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners
Venue: Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas (field turf)
                    Date: Thursday, September 4, 2014
                    Time/TV: 8:00 PM ET – FOX Sports 1
                    Line: Arizona -7
                    Last Meeting: 2013, Arizona (-24½) 38-13

Texas-San Antonio has played just one season as a full FBS member and this 2014 season will be the first year that the Roadrunners will be bowl eligible as they were not eligible in last season’s 7-5 campaign. Expect Texas-San Antonio to be in the postseason this year and while Marshall is getting a lot of press as the team to beat in Conference USA, the Roadrunners could be the top team in the West side of the conference. The Roadrunners made a big opening statement with a 27-7 win at Houston last Friday, spoiling the opening of the new stadium for the Cougars and grabbing perhaps the biggest win in the history of the program.

That win avenged a 59-28 loss from last season for Texas-San Antonio and less than a week later the Roadrunners will get another shot in a revenge game, hosting an Arizona team that beat them 38-13 last season. This is a veteran Roadrunners team that returned nearly every important player from last season’s very competitive squad and is coached by Larry Coker, who led Miami to a national championship in 2001. Last season, the Roadrunners hosted Oklahoma State in a big non-conference home date, this year they will hope for better results in the marquee home game of the season at the Alamodome.

Last season, Arizona only had a small yardage edge against Texas-San Antonio, but while Arizona capitalized on its opportunities, the Roadrunners left Arizona territory empty on a few possessions to fall behind 24-6 at the half. Arizona had a modest yardage total of only 422 yards in the game, well below the season average for the Wildcats. Even with a lot of new personnel, the Wildcats posted nearly 800 yards last week to crush UNLV and it will be a difficult task for the Roadrunners defensively this week.

Arizona hosted UNLV last Friday night and it was a dominant result with a 58-13 win. Freshman quarterback Anu Solomon threw for four touchdowns in a mild surprise as the starter this season ahead of senior Jesse Scroggins. The Wildcats ran for 7.4 yards per carry as replacing Ka’Deem Carey was not a problem in game 1. UNLV actually had solid production with decent drives in the first half of the game as an Arizona defense that allowed over 400 yards per game last season still looks vulnerable and the competition will get tougher moving forward. This is an extremely athletic Wildcats team that may be the most talented that Rich Rodriguez has had in three years in Tucson, though the team has limited game experience overall.

Texas-San Antonio certainly had some great fortune in the upset on Friday night as a game that most expected would be an offensive showcase featured ugly results for both offenses. The Roadrunners punted on six of their first seven drives with a total of 22 net yards gained as they failed to pull away despite getting four first half turnovers from Houston. Texas-San Antonio managed to score a touchdown in the final minute of the first half in what was a huge score that changed the complexion of the game. Houston was held to negative rushing yards but six turnovers were clearly pivotal as Houston sophomore quarterback John O’Korn had four interceptions and a nightmare game overall leading the Cougars on offense. Houston had to abandon the running game early after falling behind so the Texas-San Antonio run defense may not be as stout as it looked in the box score.

Senior quarterback Tucker Carter did not have to do a lot leading the Texas-San Antonio offense as he passed for just 121 yards with very few downfield throws, averaging just over five yards per pass attempt. The Roadrunners only rushed for just 2.9 yards per carry as once the team built a lead it took a very conservative approach. This was not a great passing team last season and it will be interesting to see if they are able to keep up with an Arizona offense that will likely put up a much better offensive showing. The Texas-San Antonio defense will get a much tougher test this week unless they can create more turnovers against a young quarterback in his first road game.

This will be a big test for Texas-San Antonio to see if they can handle some success and some national attention as this Thursday night game should have a bit more national intrigue after last week’s results. The spread obviously has changed dramatically as the Roadrunners are not nearly the underdog they were last season. Texas-San Antonio narrowly missed covering against Arizona last season but there is an over 17-point adjustment this season with the venue shift. While Arizona is a more prominent program than Houston, this matchup might not bring the same focus for a roster filled with mainly Texas kids, going against a bigger in-state school last week. This also might have been a better upset opportunity for Texas-San Antonio had they lost last week as now Arizona will be well aware of what the Roadrunners can do.

For both teams this is a big opportunity to get a quality non-conference win over a team that will likely be in the postseason. Arizona is just 4-6 S/U in road games under Rodriguez although Texas-San Antonio was just 3-3 S/U in the dome last season. While the NFL matchup will certainly get more viewers by a mile Thursday night, this is a better matchup than it might sound to the casual college football fan and this game will be worth turning to during the breaks.

Line Movement: The early line opened at -8 before dipping to just -7 early this week.

Last Meeting: This game occurred in the third week of last season and it was a tough follow-up game for Texas-San Antonio coming off hosting Oklahoma State in one of the biggest home dates in the history of the program. Arizona led 38-6 in the fourth quarter before Texas-San Antonio got a late score to make the final score more respectable. Arizona had just a 422-379 yardage edge, posting 264 yards on the ground playing with a lead. Texas-San Antonio passed for 277 yards playing from behind most of the game to boost the yardage numbers.

Series History: This is just the second meeting, with Arizona winning and covering last season 38-13 at home.

Arizona Historical Trends: The Wildcats have not posted strong historical numbers in the road favorite role, going just 23-34 ATS as a road favorite since 1980, including going 4-10 ATS as a road favorite since 2008. Should this line climb, Arizona is just 8-19 ATS as road favorite of 10 or more points since 1982. Arizona is just 4-6 S/U & ATS in road games under Rodriguez, going just 2-4 ATS last season. Arizona is also just 17-28 ATS as a favorite of seven or more since 1999.

Texas-San Antonio Historical Trends: The Roadrunners only have ATS numbers for the past two seasons vs. FBS competition. Texas-San Antonio is 4-5 ATS at home and 2-3 ATS as a home underdog since 2012 as the road ATS numbers have been much more promising for the Roadrunners. Texas-San Antonio is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 games as an underdog including last week’s win.

Game of the Day: Arizona at Texas-San Antonio
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Wildcats at Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (+7, 56)

Arizona put on a dynamic offensive display in its season opener, but the Wildcats' second contest appears as if it will be anything but a cake walk. The Wildcats hit the road for the first time Thursday when they take on Texas-San Antonio, which is also coming off an impressive win in Week 1. Arizona rolled to a 58-13 victory over UNLV on Friday behind a school-record 787 yards of total offense, including 425 passing yards by Anu Solomon.

“Our guys competed well and kept their poise,” Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters. “It was a good win and we’ll learn from it. We will get a quick turnaround and get ready for the next one.” Arizona, which registered two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers Friday, is trying to start 2-0 for the sixth time in the last seven years. Meanwhile, UTSA's football program has only been in existence since 2011 but the Roadrunners are coming off one of the biggest wins in school history.

                              TV: 8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened the Wildcats at 7-point road favorites and the total at 56.

INJURY REPORT: Arizona - DL Reggie Gilbert (questionable, foot). UTSA - T Josh Walker (questionable, undisclosed).

ABOUT ARIZONA (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U): Solomon, a redshirt freshman, also ran for 50 yards last week as part of a 353-yard rushing attack for the Wildcats, who were led by Terris Jones-Grigsby (124 yards) and Nick Wilson (104). With Austin Hill (110 yards) and Samajie Grant (101) going over the century mark through the air, it marked the first time in school history that Arizona had two 100-yard rushers and a pair of 100-yard receivers in the same game. “We have the ability to be a good offense this year. We just need to carry the confidence like we do," said Hill, who had a 92-yard TD catch-and-run in his first game in 20 months following knee surgery.

ABOUT TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U): The Roadrunners opened their season with a resounding 27-7 road victory against Houston, holding the Cougars scoreless until 1:04 remained. David Glasco II ran for a pair of touchdowns and the UTSA defense forced six turnovers, including four interceptions. One negative for the Roadrunners is they committed 14 penalties for 115 yards - a stat they surely will need to clean up if they are going to upset the Wildcats.
