  • Tuesday's Game 2 Tips

    May 3, 2011

For the third straight day, gamblers are staring at a doubleheader Tuesday in the NBA Playoffs. The action starts early down in South Florida where Miami will play host to Boston in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Most betting shops have installed Miami (63-25 straight up, 43-44-1 against the spread) as a five-point favorite with a total of 182. The Celtics are plus-190 on the money line (risk $100 to win $190).

Erik Spoelstra’s team cruised to a 99-90 win as a five-point home favorite in Sunday’s Game 1. The 189 combined points jumped ‘over’ the 179 ½-point total.

Dwyane Wade was the catalyst with 38 points, five assists, three steals and two blocked shots. James Jones erupted for 25 points from off the bench, while LeBron James added 22 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots. Jones hit 5-of-7 attempts from 3-point range and drained all 10 of his free throws.

Ray Allen scored a team-high 25 points in the losing effort. Paul Pierce chipped in with 19 but he was ejected on a questionable technical-foul call late in the fourth quarter.

It helped that Wade and Jones had big games offensively, but the physical tone the Heat set early was the biggest difference in winning the series’s lid-lifter. Jones levied a hard foul on Pierce that prompted the perennial All-Star to shove him and get his first tech. Moments later, Wade decided to run through a Pierce screen rather than go over it. That physical play baited Pierce into another tech and the ejection.

None of that will be lost on Boston (60-27 SU, 40-45-2 ATS) going into tonight’s Game 2. You know the Celtics will try to come out and be the more physical team from the jump.

Doc Rivers didn’t think Miami was being physical, telling the media, “It wasn’t physical – it was cheap-shot stuff.”

Despite the Game 1 setback, Boston still owns a 10-4 spread record in its last 14 games against Miami. And the Celtics have won in the Heat’s building, doing so by a 112-107 count back in November.

Sportsbook.com has updated the series price for Boston-Miami. Going into Game 2, the Heat are the minus-330 ‘chalk,’ while the Celtics own attractive plus-270 odds (risk $100 to win $270).

TNT will have the telecast at 7:05 p.m. Eastern.

Memphis (51-38 SU, 58-29-2 ATS) will try to take a 2-0 advantage over Oklahoma City in the West semifinals tonight. The Grizzlies stunned the Thunder in Game 1, capturing a 114-101 win as a 6 ½-point underdog.

Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol dominated in the lane with Randolph scoring 34 points to go with 10 rebounds and three steals. Gasol finished with 20 points, 13 boards and three blocked shots. Mike Conley added 15 points and seven assists without committing a turnover.

Kevin Durant had a team-high 33 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort. Russell Westbrook had 29 points, eight boards and six assists, but he committed seven turnovers and was just 9-of-23 from the field. Kendrick Perkins pulled the biggest no-show, producing just two points and six rebounds in 29 minutes.

Lionel Hollins’s team is on a 16-3-1 ATS roll dating back to the regular season. Even without one of its stars in Rudy Gay, Memphis is starting to look like a legitimate contender to win it all – seriously.

There’s not a better interior combination than Randolph and Gasol in all of the NBA, including Bynum and Gasol in L.A. Tony Allen is a dynamic defender with a nasty streak who is thriving in a starting role since Gay’s injury. And then there’s Conley, who has come a long way and is playing outstanding right now.

When you look at the bench, you have to like what you see. Shane Battier is an ideal role player who can knock down big 3’s at crunch time, while O.J. Mayo is an inconsistent scorer but one capable of erupting at any time. Darrell Arthur is a young ‘big’ that’s got an excellent skill set for a big man.

One thing is for certain: The Grizzlies have been cashing tickets galore, especially when listed as underdogs. They are 27-7-2 ATS in their last 36 such spots.

The ‘over’ has also been a money maker for Memphis recently, going 8-2 in its last 10 games.

For tonight’s Game 2, most books are listing OKC as a 6 ½-point favorite with a total of 197 ½. The Grizzlies are plus-260 to win outright (risk $100 to win $260). The updated series price at most spots is OKC minus-130, meaning bettors can take Memphis for a plus-110 payout.

TNT will have television coverage at 9:35 p.m. Eastern.

    **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Atlanta won its first second-round game in 14 years last night when it captured a 103-95 win in Game 1 at Chicago. The Hawks won outright as nine-point underdogs, rewarding money-line supporters with a monster payout in the plus-375 range (risk $100 to win $175). Joe Johnson scored a game-high 34 points and Jamal Crawford dropped 22 on the Bulls. Jeff Teague did a helluva job replacing Kirk Hinrich, who is unlikely to play in the series. Teague scored 10 points and had five assists compared to only one turnover. Most importantly, he was the primary defender on Derrick Rose, who was just 11-of-27 from the field.

--The ‘under’ had cashed in five straight Atlanta games and 13 of its last 16 before last night’s game obliterated the 178-point total to go 'over.'

--Dallas rallied from a double-digit deficit in the third quarter to beat the Lakers 96-94 in last night’s Game 1 at Staples Center. Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd made huge plays at crunch time, while Kobe Bryant committed one turnover, played a role in another and then missed a clean look at a 3-pointer for the potential game winner at the buzzer.

--Depending on what number you had for a bet on last night’s L.A.-Dallas total, the final minute was filled with anxiety for bettors on either side. The ‘over’ cashed thanks to three free throws from Dirk and Jason Kidd in the last 19 seconds.

--For bettors thinking an underdog money-line parlay might hit for a second night in a row, you can go with Boston and Memphis in a two-teamer that’ll pay better than 9/1 odds.

      • Heat look for 2-0 series lead over Boston Tuesday

        BOSTON CELTICS

        at MIAMI HEAT

Eastern Conference Playoffs – Second Round
        Game 2 – Miami leads series 1-0
        Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
        Line: Miami -5, Total: 181.5

After a physical Game 1 in which the Heat imposed their will on the aging Celtics, Kevin Garnett and company will look to even the series when they meet in South Beach for Game 2.

The Celtics were 13-for-32 (40.6%) in the paint on Sunday and seven of those FG attempts were blocked. This is the same Boston team that shot 57.8% from the same range during the regular season, second-best in the NBA. Rajon Rondo dominated the Knicks averaging 19.0 PPG and 12.0 APG, but was awful in Game 1, scoring just eight points and dishing out seven assists while turning the ball over five times. The Celtics also need better production out of Garnett, who scored just six points on 3-of-9 shooting. Glen “Big Baby” Davis posted a horrendous minus-21 rating in his 23 minutes on Sunday. Ray Allen had a great shooting night, dropping 25 points on 9-of-13 FG. Paul Pierce, who had 19 points and seven rebounds before getting ejected in Game 1, was not suspended, and will suit up Tuesday.

While Dwyane Wade scored 38 points and LeBron James added 22, the Heat got nothing out of the third member of the Big Three in Game 1, as Chris Bosh scored just seven points on 3-of-10 shooting. However, James Jones exploded for a career playoff-high 25 points thanks to 5-for-7 shooting from behind the arc. If the Heat can get that type of production from someone outside of the Big Three consistently, they are going to be hard to beat. LeBron James has been outscored by two or more of his teammates in two straight games. That happened in only two of LeBron’s 75 previous playoff games (both in losses with the Cavaliers).

Wade averaged just 12.8 PPG on 28.1 percent shooting against Boston during the regular season, so his Game 1 explosion was a bit shocking to the Celtics who thought they had him figured out. Look for James to raise his game on Tuesday and record his first 40-point playoff outing as a member of the Heat. I’m taking Miami minus the points to bury Boston in Game 2 and make a quick series out of this.

The FoxSheets give another reason to fade the Celtics:

BOSTON is 0-8 ATS (-8.8 Units) in road games versus teams who average 7 or less steals/game - 2nd half of the season this season. The average score was BOSTON 82.9, OPPONENT 92.3 - (Rating = 2*).

        • Grizzlies try for 2-0 series lead over Thunder

          MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

          at OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER

Western Conference Playoffs – Second Round
          Game 2 – Memphis leads series 1-0
          Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:30 p.m. EDT
          Line: Memphis -6.5, Total: 196.5

Oklahoma City looks to get back on track at home against the surging eighth-seeded Grizzlies.

Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the series with an impressive 114-101 road win Sunday. The Grizzlies dominated the paint by scoring 52 points against solid big men such as Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka. Zach Randolph (23.3 PPG in playoffs) and Marc Gasol (15.0 PPG in postseason) combined for 54 points and 23 rebounds. The team also forced 18 turnovers, which led to 23 points. In the regular season, Gasol and Randolph only scored 20 points in the same game once but managed to complete the task Sunday in Game 1. The young point guard Mike Conley (14.4 PPG in playoffs) has really done some maturing during the playoffs. The 23-year-old, first-round pick has handled the offense nicely and added 15 points with seven assists Sunday. If Memphis keeps dominating the paint and forcing turnovers, we could have a short series in favor of the underdog Grizzlies.

The Thunder may have been thinking about their next-round matchup against Los Angeles or Dallas and forgot to focus on the eighth-seeded Grizzlies. Oklahoma City was outscored by 48 points in the paint, had 14 more turnovers, and 14 less assists than Memphis. The Thunder won’t be winning any games if they keep up their current play. Kevin Durant (32.5 PPG in playoffs) did all he could Sunday, scoring 33 points on 11-of-21 shooting. Russell Westbrook (24.7 PPG in postseason) also chipped in 29 points, but shot 9-for-23 from the floor. The guard play wasn’t the problem for the Thunder, it was the battle in the paint that they got severely beaten at. Kendrick Perkins (4.8 PPG in playoffs) only scored two points on 1-of-3 shooting and was dominated by Zach Randolph. The reason the Thunder traded for Perkins was to protect the paint, so he must start doing just that.

Memphis loves being the underdog where it is 30-12 ATS (71%) and 14-3 ATS coming off an upset win. The Grizzlies are also 15-3 ATS against Northwest Division opponents and 34-15 ATS (69%) against teams with a winning record. The Thunder are only 29-30 ATS as a favorite and 21-22 ATS in home games. One positive is that Oklahoma City is 20-14 ATS when revenging a loss against an opponent. I think the Thunder will come out playing very physical and win by a close margin. With that said, I like Memphis to keep up its ATS heroics and cover once again. Some more FoxSheets trends that pick the Grizzlies to cover include:

MEMPHIS is 31-11 ATS (73.8%, +18.9 Units) versus good shooting teams - making >=46% of their shots this season. The average score was MEMPHIS 101.0, OPPONENT 99.3 - (Rating = 4*).

MEMPHIS is 37-15 ATS (71.2%, +20.5 Units) versus good offensive teams - scoring 99+ points/game this season. The average score was MEMPHIS 102.7, OPPONENT 101.1 - (Rating = 3*).

Play On - Underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points (MEMPHIS) - after beating the spread by 36 or more points total in their last five games against opponent after being beaten by the spread by 18 or more points total in their last three games. (45-21 over the last 5 seasons.) (68.2%, +21.9 units. Rating = 2*).

              • NBA Betting: LA Lakers, Mavericks Game 2

Soft and not very clutch. That’s the reputation the Dallas Mavericks have when it’s playoff time.

It may be time to revisit that thinking for Dallas is 10-0-1 against the spread its last 11 games, including 6-0-1 ATS during the postseason.

The Mavericks certainly have the Los Angeles Lakers’ attention after upsetting them, 96-94, as six-point road underdogs this past Monday night in Game 1 of this Western Conference semifinal series.

The combined 190 points just went ‘over’ the 188 total.

Dallas came from 16 points down to pull out the victory. Dirk Nowitzki scored 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Lakers center Andrew Bynum hardly factored and Dallas’ reserves outscored Los Angeles’ bench, 40-25.

“This team can beat us, it’s clear,” Kobe Bryant said about the Mavericks following Game 1.

Subscribing to the Zig-Zag revenge theory so popular in the NBA playoffs, oddsmakers have installed the Lakers as 6 ½-point favorites for Wednesday night’s Game 2 matchup at Staples Center beginning 7:30 (PT) on TNT. The ‘over/under’ is 187.

The Lakers opened this series as 2/1 favorites to capture their third consecutive world championship. No player since Michael Jordan has inspired his team to win titles more than Bryant, who had 36 points in Game 1.

There’s no panic in Los Angeles. The Mavericks have improved their height and inside toughness, but they still are not a match for 7-foot Pau Gasol, 7-0 Bynum and 6-10 Lamar Odom off the bench.

Gasol and Bynum combined to average 37 points and 17.3 rebounds in three regular-season games against Dallas, two of which Los Angeles won. Odom averaged 14.7 points.

The Lakers were plus-30 in rebounding in dispatching New Orleans in six games during their first-round series. Los Angeles averaged 40.8 rebounds versus the Hornets. The Mavericks averaged 39.7 rebounds against Portland in their opening-round series.

The Lakers out-rebounded Dallas, 44-40, in Game 1. Bynum, however, scored just eight points and pulled down five rebounds in fewer than 29 minutes after shooting 70.4 percent against the Mavericks during the regular season. The Lakers were minus 16 in scoring differential when Bynum was on the floor Monday night.

Tyson Chandler nearly had a double-double for Dallas scoring 11 points on five-of-eight shooting from the floor and had nine rebounds. The Mavericks are 15-4 when Chandler posts a double-double.

It was the seventh time in the last nine visits that the Mavericks have covered on the road against the Lakers. The road team is 11-4-1 ATS in the last 16 meetings. The ‘over’ has cashed six of the past eight times the two teams have met at Staples Center.

Los Angeles has failed to cover in six of its past eight home contests.

The Lakers ranked ninth during the regular season in scoring at 101.5 points a game. They averaged 96.5 points per game during their series against New Orleans.

Dallas averaged 93.3 points in going 5-0-1 ATS during its series with the Trail Blazers. The Mavericks held the Trail Blazers to 88.2 points per game. The Lakers held the Hornets to an average of 89.3 points per contest.

The Mavericks run a lot of pick-and-roll plays with veteran Jason Kidd at point guard primarily dishing off to Nowitzki and Jason Terry. Kidd had 11 assists in Game 1, while Nowitzki and Terry combined to make 17-of-32 shots from the floor.

The series shifts to Dallas for Game 3 on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (PT) on ESPN with Game 4 on Sunday.

The Lakers also lost Game 1 of their series at home to New Orleans. They came back to win Game 2, 87-78, failing to cover as 12-point favorites.

The Mavericks are 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 games following a pointspread cover

                • NBA Odds: Bulls look to level series against Hawks

Atlanta exorcised some playoff demons with its unexpected Game 1 victory over Chicago in the opening game of this Eastern Conference semifinal series. The fifth-seeded Hawks (49-40 straight up, 43-46 against the spread) had dropped 15 consecutive contests in second-round games dating back to 1997 before upsetting the Bulls.

Top-seed Chicago (66-22 SU, 51-35-2 ATS) needs a victory in this spot on its home court before this series moves to Atlanta. The Bulls will play Game 2 with point guard Derrick Rose listed as ‘probable’ after spraining his ankle at the end of the game.

Don Best's Real-Time Odds show Chicago as 8 ½-point home ‘chalk’ over Atlanta, with the total set at 179 ½. TNT will provide coverage of Wednesday’s Game 2 beginning at 5:05 p.m. PT from Chicago’s United Center.

Atlanta defeated the Bulls Monday as a 9 ½-point road underdog, 103-95, while the combined 198 points soared ‘over’ the 177 ½-point closing total. The Hawks are now 8-3 ATS the past 11 meetings in this series, while the ‘over’ is 9-3 the previous 12 encounters.

Atlanta took control of the contest by outscoring Chicago by 10 points in the first quarter, 28-18, and seven in the fourth, 31-24. The Hawks did grab one more rebound in the triumph, 38-37, while the Bulls dished out one more assist, 21-20. Atlanta shot a stellar 51 percent (40-of-78) from the field, and 54 percent (7-of-13) from behind the arc.

Shooting guard Joe Johnson led all scorers with 34 points on 12-of-18 shooting, connecting on all five of his 3-point attempts. Guard Jamal Crawford contributed 22 in the triumph, while center Al Horford provided nine and 13 rebounds.

Chicago enjoyed advantages in fast break points, 18-8, and points in the paint, 48-40. The Bulls shot 45 percent (37-of-83) from the field, and 44 percent (8-of-18) from 3-point land. Chicago entered the fourth quarter with a slight one-point advantage, but the Hawks went on a 15-2 run from the end of the third quarter to early in the fourth.

Rose, who was recently named the league’s Most Valuable Player, paced the offense with 24 points and 10 assists. The 22-year-old was 11-of-27 from the field, but did not attempt a free throw after averaging 12 free throw attempts in the first-round series.

Small forward Luol Deng accounted for 21 and six rebounds in the setback, while power forward Carlos Boozer had 14 and eight. Center Joakim Noah provided 11 and nine, while shooting guard Kyle Korver netted nine.

Atlanta point guard Kirk Hinrich is ‘doubtful’ for this contest due to a hamstring injury. Backup Jeff Teague played well in the Game 1 triumph, recording 10 points and five assists while limiting Rose to 2-of-9 shooting when guarding him.

Atlanta has now seen the ‘under’ go 13-6 its past 19 road games. Chicago dropped to 2-8 ATS its previous 10 home outings. The Bulls went 2-1 SU and ATS during the three regular season meetings with the Hawks, with the ‘under’ going 2-1.

                  • NBA Odds: Bulls, Lakers draw Game 2 chalk

Two NBA playoffs series move on to Game 2 on Wednesday night, each with their own superstar hobbling on a bad left ankle.

The first tip-off will be at 5:00 p.m. (PT) on TNT between the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls. The line opened on the Don Best odds screen with Chicago favored by nine before moving down a half to 8½. The total remains at 180.

Monday night's Game 1 saw Joe Johnson of the Hawks put his skills on display to the dismay of the fans at Chicago's United Center. On 12-of-18 shooting, he scored 34 points and was an impressive 5-of-5 from behind the arc.

The biggest news, of course, came in the final seconds of the game when Bulls superstar Derrick Rose turned his ankle on a meaningless play. It happens to be the same ankle that he injured in Game 4 of the first round series against the Pacers. He returned in Game 5 and again he is determined to return in Game 2 of this series.

That’s good news for the Bulls because forward Carlos Boozer played while suffering through a turf toe injury Monday night.

The Hawks won despite being without their point guard, Kirk Hinrich, who is doubtful for the remainder of the series.

The Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers will follow up that game starting at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The Don Best screen opened with the defending champs favored by 6½ and a total of 189. The line remains the same but the total has been bet down to 186½.

Quite simply, the Lakers blew Game 1. They had a 16-point lead in the third quarter that was drained to seven to to start the fourth. The final quarter set up Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs to steal Game 1 from the Lakers, just as the New Orleans Hornets did in the first round.

Dallas has normally been the team to give up huge leads in the playoffs, but this time they showed some grit and turned the tables.

Kobe Bryant hoisted up 29 shots in this game to score 36 points. Though they lost the game, the Lakers had two chances to reclaim the lead late and Kobe was knocking down shots. Down 95-94, Pau Gasol lost the ball on a fluke handoff to Bryant that led to Jason Kidd making 1-of-2 free throws with 3.1 seconds left.

Even after that, Bryant had a good look at a 3-pointer that just didn’t go in. Remember, Kobe is still playing through a sprained left ankle.

After losing Game 1 to the Hornets, the Lakers came back to win by nine in a low-scoring affair in Game 2. They will look to have the same success against Dallas.

                    • Wednesday's Playoff Tips

                      May 3, 2011

The road underdogs took control in the series openers in the conference semifinals with the Grizzlies, Mavericks, and Hawks each grabbing a Game 1 victory. Dallas and Atlanta stole home-court advantage with upsets on Monday, as each club tries to capture a 2-0 series lead. We'll start in the Windy City with the Bulls looking to bounce back against Atlanta.

Hawks at Bulls - 8:00 PM EST

Chicago fell behind early in its series opener and couldn't manage to finish off a comeback as the Bulls dropped a 103-95 home decision to the Hawks. Atlanta jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter, but Chicago rallied back to cut the halftime deficit to one. However, the Hawks outscored the Bulls, 31-24 in the final quarter to cash as 9 ½-point underdogs and +430 on the money-line.

Derrick Rose turned his ankle in the final seconds, but the league MVP is listed as 'probable' for Wednesday's Game 2. Rose scored a team-high 24 points, but Joe Johnson put up 34 points, including 5-for-5 from three-point range. The series opening loss for the Bulls was just the second setback at the United Center since January 18 (21-2 SU).

The Hawks have made a massive turnaround from an ATS standpoint after failing to cover the final five games of the regular season. Larry Drew's team owns a 6-1 ATS mark in the postseason, while going 5-2 to the 'under.' The pair of 'overs' hit in each of the series openers against Orlando and Chicago. However, the Hawks have scored 88 points in each of the games that finished 'under' the total.

VegasInsider.com's Chris David elaborates on the Hawks' scoring inconsistency in the playoffs, "Atlanta's output in Game 1 shouldn't come as a surprise, considering it scored an identical 103 points in the first game of its opening round series versus Orlando. What people might not remember is that the Hawks didn't bust 90 in the next five games against the Magic. So will the Hawks shoot lights out again against Chicago? The Bulls allowed the Pacers to put up 99 in Game 1, but they only gave up an average 88 points in the next four. An adjustment on defense will be necessary and likely in Game 2."

Tom Thibodeau's squad fell to 1-3 ATS as a home favorite in the playoffs, with three of the losses coming as 9 ½-point 'chalk' or higher. Since Chicago blew out Atlanta at Philips Arena on March 22, the Hawks are 12-6 ATS, including a 6-3 ATS mark on the highway. Meanwhile, the Bulls are riding a 5-0 ATS run since the All-Star break when coming off a SU defeat.

The Bulls are listed as 8 ½-point favorites in Game 2, while the total is set at 180. The game will be televised nationally on TNT.

Mavericks at Lakers - 10:30 PM EST

For the second straight series, the defending champions lost the opener as Dallas rallied from a 16-point deficit to stun Los Angeles, 96-94 as six-point 'dogs. Kobe Bryant missed the potential game-winning shot at the buzzer, dropping the Lakers to 1-7 ATS the last eight games at Staples Center.

Bryant carried the Lakers with a game-high 36 points, but Andrew Bynum and Ron Artest combined for just 10 points on 4-for-16 shooting. Dirk Nowitzki led the second-half charge for Dallas with 28 points and 14 rebounds, while the Mavs shot 49% from the field. Dallas is the hottest ATS team in the playoffs with a 6-0-1 ATS in seven games, as Rick Carlisle's club owns a 10-0-1 ATS record the last 11 contests.

David breaks down the line movement in this series and where the money is headed, "It appears that the sharp money was on Dallas in Game 1, with the line dipping to 5 ½ points at a few major offshore books. The number closed at 6 and it looked like the public was going to win and cover, with the Lakers building a 16-point lead early in the third quarter. After the loss, the opener for Game 2 started at 6 ½ but it went up to 7 quickly. It's hard to see L.A. losing two straight at home in the playoffs, something that has never been done since Phil Jackson took over the coaching duties for his second go 'round."

Since the Mavs started the season at 10-0 ATS as a road underdog, Dallas is just 6-6-1 ATS the previous 13 games when receiving points on the highway. Meanwhile, the Lakers won 17 of 18 games after the All-Star break, but L.A. is 6-8 SU and 4-10 ATS the past 16 games. Even though the Lakers gave up 109 points in the first round opening game loss to the Hornets, Los Angeles has allowed 96 points or less in each of the last six contests.

The Lakers are listed as seven-point favorites, while the total is set at 186 ½. The second half of this Wednesday doubleheader will also be televised nationally on TNT.

                      • Mavericks look for another upset in Los Angeles

                        DALLAS MAVERICKS

                        at LOS ANGELES LAKERS

NBA Playoffs - Western Conference Semifinals
                        Game 2 – Dallas leads series 1-0
                        Tip-off: Wednesday, 10:35 p.m. EDT
Line: Los Angeles -7, Total: 187

The deeper we get into the playoffs, the closer the competition level, it becomes more and more important to live up to the expression “steal one on the road.” Especially when a series involves teams like the Lakers and the Mavericks, teams that are as even as their respective 57-25 regular season records would indicate. Monday night the veteran Mavericks were successful in their thievery of Game 1 of the series. Wednesday, they try and go for a second straight win, and if they pull off a heist in Game 2, it will make the Game 1 victory look like a simple pickpocket.

Dallas overcame a 16-point, second-half deficit to shock the Lakers in Staples Center, 96-94. Dirk Nowitzki scored 28 points, hauled down 14 boards, and hit the free throw that put his team up for good with 19.5 seconds left. Multiple chances to win the game were squandered by Los Angeles in the final seconds when the Lakers turned the ball over, leading to a Jason Kidd FT, and Kobe Bryant missed a three-pointer for the win as time expired. Bryant led all scorers with 36 points, and felt the need to pass along some wisdom to his teammates that would serve as a wake up call concerning the Mavs: "This team can beat us, it's clear."

"We felt like we gave the game away," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I'm not so sure Dallas didn't outplay us, but the players felt like we gave it away. ... The game was won in the third quarter when we got the lead and stopped playing defense and stopped playing offense. It took a lot of energy out of us and gave a lot of energy to them."

It was the second straight Game 1 defeat this postseason for the defending champs, which is unusual for a team that won six straight series openers over the past two seasons. The Lakers allowed Dallas to shoot 49.4% FG in Game 1, much higher than the 46.3% they allowed to opponents during the regular season, which tied them for just 13th-best in the league.

Dallas had a more balanced attack than L.A. Monday night, with five players scoring in double figures. The Mavericks bench outscored the Lakers reserves 40-25, as Jason Terry had 15 points off the bench while Peja Stojakovic added 10. But the big attraction Monday night was the job that Nowitzki did down the stretch, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter, as the Mavericks won their first-ever playoff game in Los Angeles. Nowitzki’s clutch performance came as no surprise to his team. "He always wants the ball down the stretch, and he always finds a way to get it done," said Dallas guard Jason Kidd, whose veteran defensive savvy also caused problems for Bryant. "He likes that stage. You don't find a lot of guys who like that stage. Kobe is one of them, but (Nowitzki) has done a lot of work to get there with him. He and Kobe are the two best players on the floor, and he found a way to get it done (Monday)."

While Nowitzki was poised at the end of the game, Bryant and the Lakers appeared confused and flustered, failing to get shots off in two of their final three possessions in the fourth quarter. Expecting the Black Mamba to melt down in crunch time for a second straight game is about as likely as expecting the world champions to lose two straight home playoff games to start a series. Then again, stranger things have happened.

The pick here is for Los Angeles to bounce back at home in Staples Center to even the series up. The following two FoxSheets trends support the Lakers to win and cover.

Play Against - Underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points (DALLAS) - poor foul drawing team - attempting <=24 free throws/game, good shooting team - shooting >=46% on the season. (190-118 over the last 5 seasons.) (61.7%, +60.2 units. Rating = 2*).

Play On - Home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (LA LAKERS) - after 1 or more consecutive losses, in a game involving two good teams (60% to 75%). (89-57 over the last 5 seasons.) (61%, +26.3 units. Rating = 1*).

NBA Playoffs - Eastern Conference Semifinals
                          Game 2 – Atlanta leads series 1-0
                          Tip-off: Wednesday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
                          Line: Chicago -8.5, Total: 180

The Bulls didn’t look like a team that had the league MVP and the Coach of the Year on their side Monday when they lost 103-95 to the Hawks. Atlanta looks to win again Wednesday night and take a dominant 2-0 lead back to Philips Arena.

The Hawks didn’t cry over spilled milk when they found out their veteran point guard Kirk Hinrich (10.2 PPG in playoffs) will most likely be out for the whole series with a hamstring injury. Jeff Teague (5.0 PPG in playoffs) stepped up into the starting role and played fantastic defense on the recently announced league MVP, Derrick Rose. Teague also chipped in 10 points and five assists. Jamal Crawford has been fantastic in the playoffs (20.7 PPG), and scored 22 points in the victory Monday. Joe Johnson was on point from behind the arc going 5-for-5, and finished with 34 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Atlanta out-shot the Bulls 51% to 45% from the field, and made 54% of its threes (7-of-13) to Chicago’s 44% (8-of-18) from downtown. If Atlanta can win again at the United Center, this series may be all but done.

Chicago did not look like the team with the best record and the 8.5-point favorite in front of its stunned home crowd Monday. The Bulls only lost five games at home the whole regular season, but were outplayed basically the entire Game 1. Derrick Rose scored 24 points, but went 11-of-27 from the field and didn’t attempt a free throw. Yes, that was not a typo. Rose didn’t attempt a single free throw and settled for jump shots, which we all know is not his strength. At the end of the game, Rose stepped on the foot of the ball handler who was running out the clock and tweaked the same ankle he had problems with in the previous series. Fortunately for the Bulls, Rose said he was all right and ready to go Wednesday. Chicago will need strong front-court play from Carlos Boozer (10.7 PPG, 9.8 RPG in playoffs) and Joakim Noah (11.8 PPG, 10.3 RPG in playoffs) who combined for 25 points and 17 rebounds in Game 1. Luol Deng had a good game, scoring 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and will need to have another good performance Wednesday to keep the pressure off Derrick Rose.

Atlanta has been great against the spread during the playoffs going 6-1 ATS and 3-1 ATS when leading a playoff series. The Hawks have been average in road games (24-21 ATS) and as underdogs (22-19 ATS). Atlanta has had also success against Central Division opponents, going 12-7 ATS. Chicago is 2-8 ATS in its past 10 home games and 2-4 ATS overall in the playoffs. The Bulls have been spectacular though after an upset loss this season, going 11-3 ATS. I like Derrick Rose to have a huge game and lead Chicago to a double-digit victory in front of a rowdy United Center crowd.

Some more FoxSheets trends leaning toward the Bulls include these three:

Play On - Home teams (CHICAGO) - off a home loss, extremely well rested team - playing 3 or less games in 10 days. (54-21 over the last 5 seasons.) (72%, +30.9 units. Rating = 3*).

Play Against - Underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points (ATLANTA) - poor foul drawing team - attempting <=24 free throws/game, good shooting team - shooting >=46% on the season. (190-118 over the last 5 seasons.) (61.7%, +60.2 units. Rating = 2*).

CHICAGO is 15-6 ATS (71.4%, +8.4 Units) after 1 or more consecutive losses this season. The average score was CHICAGO 101.7, OPPONENT 92.8 - (Rating = 1*).

Dallas and Atlanta stole home-court advantage with upsets on Monday, as each club tries to capture a 2-0 series lead. We'll start in the Windy City with the Bulls looking to bounce back against Atlanta.

Hawks at Bulls - 8:00 PM EST

Mavericks at Lakers - 10:30 PM EST

For the second straight series, the defending champions lost the opener as Dallas rallied from a 16-point deficit to stun Los Angeles, 96-94 as six-point 'dogs. Kobe Bryant missed the potential game-winning shot at the buzzer, dropping the Lakers to 1-7 ATS the last eight games at Staples Center.
