    Tuesday NBA Best Bet
    Charlotte vs Cleveland

The mighty sure take a big fall when the King leaves town, as this year has been disastrous for the Cleveland Cavaliers as it's the second time this organization has had to move on from a post-LeBron James era. Cleveland comes into this home game tonight with a 1-11 SU record (6-6 ATS), and that includes a 126-94 loss to this Hornets team 10 days ago.

Does anything change for the Cavaliers this time around?

BetOnline.ag Odds: Charlotte (-7.5); Total set at 218

If you were to look for a dictionary definition of what a professional sports team looks like after going all-out to win championships during a championship “window,” the 2018-19 Cleveland Cavaliers would be just that. The Cavs spent the past four years surrounding LeBron with veteran talent at nearly every position, and while it did result in four straight NBA Finals appearances and one title, it's the organization who's now stuck with a bunch of aged players who can't compete on a nightly basis in today's NBA. Kyrie Irving warned us all that this would happen, and it's why he got out when he did, but the Cavs look like they did after the first time LeBron left, tanking away a season to try and fast-track a rebuild with a #1 overall pick.

Tanking teams are inherently hard to back in the betting markets because you typically want a chance at an outright victory if you are going to consider taking the points with an underdog. A one-win Cleveland team doesn't exactly inspire too much confidence in that regard, but the results do suggest there has been some improvement.

Cleveland started the year on a six-game losing streak where the average margin of defeat was 12.83 points. They snapped that with a all-around performance in a 136-114 win over Atlanta, but have since lost five in a row. The margin of defeat during this five-game losing streak: 10.5 points.

Granted, that doesn't look like a dramatic improvement, but if you were to just look at the three games they lost since that first meeting with Charlotte, it's been defeats of 2, 9, and 1 point respectively. Obviously we can't just “throw out” that Charlotte game since they are the Cavs opponent tonight, but I don't think we will see the Hornets knock down 57% of their shots again, as seven different guys finished with double-digit points that evening.

For one, this is a road game rather than a home one for the Hornets, and two, Charlotte's probably already got one eye on their return trip home after tonight's end to this three-game road trip for a few days of rest and relaxation before they deal with Philly and Boston in their next two games. Charlotte lost to Philly by one in an OT game over the weekend, so even with a few days off after tonight's game, it's not hard to see that the Hornets may not be all that interested in bringing their best effort against a team they figure they can beat by just showing up.

Counting on the Cavs to show up is a bit tougher to stomach, but as those recent close games suggest, these Cavs players are still professionals and are getting tired of all the losing. Talent-wise they may not have what it takes to get many SU wins this year, but they are at home and seemingly on the precipice of snapping this losing streak. Cleveland is also 3-2 ATS this year when underdogs of 7+ points, while the Hornets are just 2-2 ATS this year when favored by less than nine.

With the betting percentages at VegasInsider.com currently sitting at about an 80/20 split in favor of Charlotte tonight (not surprising), it's not always the worst thing in the world to side with a home dog that nobody wants to come in other than the oddsmakers. Situationally, it's a pretty decent spot for the Cavs to come out and play hard, as chances are all those vets the Cavs currently have know that the next few months are basically an open audition for them to potentially get traded to a contender by March. Facing a team that handed it to them 10 days ago, I think we see those vets step up and find a way to keep this game well within this spread, if not have a shot at the outright win late.

          *****************

          Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

          13) Monday night’s Rams-Chiefs game was moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles, after the NFL determined the field in Mexico City wasn’t up to NFL quality. Player safety took precedence over the almighty buck, which is the way it should be.

          12) Random fact that doesn’t matter for Monday night’s game anymore; the altitude in Mexico City is 7,350 feet. Denver’s altitude is 5,280 feet, which is why the Broncos play in Mile High Stadium, at least thats what it was called before corporate sponsorship was invented.

          11) Congrats to the great Bob Melvin, who was named AL Manager of the Year Tuesday night. I watch the A’s play every night; you have no idea how great a job he did, leading the team with the lowest payroll in baseball to the playoffs this past summer. Well deserved award!!!

That said, Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash was also awesome this season, winning 90 games with a Rays’ squad that doesn’t exactly spend a lot of money either.

          10) Eli Manning’s career W-L record in regular season games is 113-110; he is the only NFL QB ever with 100+ wins and 100+ losses for the same team.

Question for Giants’ fans out there: Who do you think was a better Giant, Eli Manning or Phil Simms? I’m curious what you think- e-mail me at [email protected]

          9) If you’re debating whether Manning is a Hall of Famer, keep in mind that Joe Namath (62-63-4) is only Hall of Fame QB with a losing record- he won only two playoff games, one Super Bowl, albeit the Super Bowl that forced the AFL/NFL merger. By way of reference, Jim Plunkett was 72-72 and also won two Super Bowls- he isn’t in the HOF.

          8) Brooklyn Nets’ star Caris LeVert hurt his foot in Minnesota Monday night; the injury was so gruesome, there were teammates in tears on the Brooklyn bench, but it turned out relatively well. LeVert dislocated his foot, won’t need surgery and could return later this season.

          7) That didn’t take long; former Browns’ coach Hue Jackson is going to join the Cincinnati Bengals‘ coaching staff immediately; his title on the Bengals’ staff is unknown right now, but he joined the team Tuesday.

Bengals have a bye this week; they play the Browns play a week from Sunday, and then again in Week 16- those games figure to be very interesting.

          6) Penny Hardaway is going to create a monster program at Memphis; not only is he a legend at Memphis he has two former NBA players (Sam Mitchell, Mike Miller) on his coaching staff, as well as another former Memphis Tiger (Tony Madlock). Memphis is a hotbed of high school talent; hard to believe Hardaway isn’t going to dominate the recruiting there.

Memphis-LSU game on SEC Network Tuesday night was great fun.

          5) Golden State Warriors have dissension? Apparently, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant got into it late in Monday night’s loss to the Clippers, and the dispute spilled over into the locker room after the game. Green was then suspended for Tuesday night’s game.

I’ve said this before, but seems like in a league where most everyone is really rich, the NBA has an awful lot of angry people. If the Warriors can’t get along, who can?

Durant wasn’t happy on the Thunder, who were a very good team; now he’s not happy on the Warriors, who are a stacked team. Maybe he can go to China and score 50 a game like Jimmer Fredette and make all the decisions- maybe he’d be happy then.

          4) Sacramento Kings beat the Spurs 104-99 Monday night, ending a 14-game losing streak against San Antonio. Kings are 8-6 and appear to be vastly improved, and they also seem to be enjoying the experience. Good for them.

          3) Le’Veon Bell didn’t report to the Steelers by 4pm Tuesday, cannot play in the NFL this season; he forfeits all of his $15M salary, hoping to clean up as a free agent this winter. We’ll see how that works out for him.

          2) Alabama is playing The Citadel in football this weekend; this is pathetic, that a team as good as Alabama is playing a I-AA team. Play a Sun Belt team, play a MAC team. Have some guts and play someone who can challenge you. This is embarrassing.

          1) Nathan Peterman’s NFL career has mercifully come to an end, after the Bills cut him. Not sure what took them so long, but Josh Allen is almost ready to play again, so Peterman was released.

                  Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Blazers at Lakers – 10:35 PM EST – ESPN

Both these Western Conference squads are hitting their stride as Portland and Los Angeles meet up for the third time this season. The Blazers (10-3 SU, 10-3 ATS) sit atop the Northwest division after winning seven of its previous eight games to leap-frog Denver for the top spot. Portland finished off a 5-1 homestand by holding off Boston, 100-94 as two-point favorites on Sunday as Damian Lillard paced the Blazers with 19 points and 12 assists.

The Lakers (7-6 SU, 4-9 ATS) have overcome a slow 2-5 start by posting a 5-1 record the last six games to sneak above the .500 mark. LeBron James led Los Angeles with 26 points and the go-ahead dunk in the final seconds of Sunday’s narrow 107-106 home triumph over Atlanta, but the Lakers failed to cash as 11 ½-point favorites. The Lakers have won four of their last five games at Staples Center after starting 0-2 at home, while the Purple and Gold have cashed the UNDER in six straight contests.

The Blazers captured the first matchup of the season by spoiling James’ debut with the Lakers on opening night at the Moda Center, 128-119. Portland cashed as three-point favorites in a back-and-forth game that saw L.A. convert only 7-of-30 three-point attempts. The Lakers rebounded in the second meeting on November 3 in Portland with a 114-110 triumph as 3 ½-point underdogs, highlighted by a 32-16 third quarter to overcome a one-point halftime deficit.

                  The Butler Will Do It

Following a month of “Will He or Won’t He Get Traded,” the Wolves finally pulled the plug on Jimmy Butler’s time in Minnesota and traded the disgruntled swingman to Philadelphia. The 76ers (9-6 SU, 6-9 ATS) are lining themselves up to be a threat to win the Eastern Conference along with the Celtics, Raptors, and Bucks.

Butler is expected to suit up for the Sixers as they wrap up their three-game road trip in Orlando. Philadelphia rebounded from a late meltdown in an overtime loss at Memphis to defeat Miami on Monday, 124-114 as 2 ½-point underdogs. Joel Embiid dominated in the middle for Philadelphia by scoring 35 points and pulling down 18 rebounds, while the 76ers knocked down 15 three-pointers. The victory was only the second in eight opportunities away from Wells Fargo Center, while the 76ers own an 0-2 SU/AT mark in the role of a road favorite.

The Magic (6-8 SU, 6-8 ATS) have come back to life after beginning the season at 2-6 by winning four of their past six games. Orlando and Washington matched each other point for point through three quarters on Monday before the Wizards pulled away for a 117-109 victory to grab the narrow cover as 8 ½-point favorites. The Magic cashed as hefty 12 ½-point underdogs at Philadelphia on October 20 in a 116-115 setback, as Evan Fournier dropped in six treys and scored 31 points for Orlando.

                  You Again?

By the time mid-November hits, the Jazz (7-6 SU, 7-6 ATS) will have played the Grizzlies and Mavericks each three times. Utah finally beat Memphis for the first time in three tries on Monday as a short road favorite, while the Jazz seek their third victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday. In the first matchup at American Airlines Center on October 28, the Jazz held off the Mavs, 113-104 to cash as 4 ½-point favorites, led by Rudy Gobert’s double-double (23 points, 16 rebounds).

In the second meeting in Salt Lake City last Wednesday, Utah halted a four-game slide by blasting Dallas, 117-102 to cover as 9 ½-point favorites. Utah improved to 8-1 in the past nine meetings with Dallas since the start of the 2016-17 season, including five straight wins at home.

Now, the Mavericks (5-8 SU, 8-5 ATS) return to the Lone Star State after picking up their first road win in seven tries this season at Chicago on Monday. Dallas has won four of six contests at American Airlines Center, including recent double-digit victories over Oklahoma City and Washington. The Mavs have also cashed in four of six opportunities as an underdog, while seeking their first three-game winning streak of the season.

                  Strap it Up

The Spurs (7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS) had won 19 of their previous meetings with the Kings before getting tripped up at Sacramento on Monday as short favorites. Now, San Antonio continues its road trip at Phoenix, looking to beat the Suns for the second time this season. In the first matchup at Talking Stick Resort Arena on Halloween night, the Spurs rolled the Suns, 120-90 as 6 ½-point favorites, as DeMar DeRozan knocked down 10-of-12 shots to pace San Antonio with 25 points.

The Suns (2-11 SU, 5-8 ATS) are back in the Valley following back-to-back road double-digit losses at New Orleans and Oklahoma City. Phoenix has dropped four straight overall, but has covered in three of its previous four home contests, including ATS victories in losses to Boston and Toronto. The Suns have finished UNDER the total in four of the last five home games, while the Spurs have gone UNDER in five of the past six games overall.

                  Double-Digit Home Favorite Traps?

                  (Part I)

The Celtics (7-6 SU, 4-9 ATS) have been one of the worst teams to back through the first month of the season. Boston stumbled on its recent road trip by losing four of five games with the only victory coming at Phoenix after the Celtics trailed by 22. The C’s failed to cash in all five road contests, including three losses as an underdog at Denver, Utah, and Portland. Boston returns home to host Chicago as a heavy favorite, as the Celtics own an 0-4 ATS record as chalk of eight points or more.

The Bulls (4-10 SU, 8-6 ATS) begin a rough stretch the next four days by heading to Boston tonight, Milwaukee on Friday, and hosting Toronto on Saturday. Chicago has scored less than 100 points in four of the past five games, while hitting the UNDER in six of the previous seven contests. The Bulls have covered in three straight road games, including as an 11-point underdog at New Orleans on November 7.

                  (Part II)

The Bucks (10-3 SU, 8-4-1 ATS) put their 6-0 home record on the line as the Grizzlies make their first visit to Fiserv Forum. Milwaukee split its four-game road trip as the Bucks lost in both favorite opportunities to the Blazers and Clippers, but shocked the Warriors and Nuggets as underdogs. Playing in the brand new Fiserv Forum, the Bucks have thrived as not only are their unbeaten but have won every home game by 11 points or more.

The Grizzlies (7-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) suffered their first home loss of the season on Monday against Utah, halting a two-game winning streak. Memphis has lost three of its past four road contests, including a 117-101 defeat at Golden State on November 5. The Grizzlies were swept by the Bucks last season, while losing four of the past five meetings with the last win in Milwaukee coming in January 2014.

Rookie Collin Sexton had a career-high 24 points for Cleveland. Playing the second of back-to-backs after topping Charlotte on Tuesday night, the Cavaliers are an NBA-worst 2-12.

In addition to forward Kevin Love (foot surgery), the Cavaliers were without starting point guard George Hill (hamstring), forward Sam Dekker (ankle) and forward Kyle Korver (sore right foot).

                                Quote of the Day
“Nobody ever talks about Kevin’s free agency. It doesn’t bother any of us. This is the NBA. There are guys that are either under contract or are upcoming free agents. It’s the business. We are focused on this year. I didn’t think anybody in our locker room or anyone on our coaching staff thinks twice about Kevin’s free agency this summer. That’s next summer. We are coaching this year and we are playing this year.”

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                                13) Lot of college basketball games in November are awful; mismatches and teams just scheduling easy wins, but Tuesday I was highly entertained by two excellent games.

Memphis-LSU was great entertainment; Penny Hardaway will build a power with the Tigers, and LSU has a strong young team, also. Both teams played fast and played well.

Georgetown-Illinois was fun to watch; Illini PG got a concussion during the afternoon walk-thru and didn’t play, which brings up a pet peeve of mine.

                                12) Some coaches are insane; they have these “walk-thrus” on game day but there are guys who turn them into practices— put it this way, you can’t get a concussion while walking. Having a practice on game day takes energy away from the game, which is all that matters. Getting your point guard hurt during a practice on game day is bleeping stupid.

Patrick Ewing’s team has upgraded its talent in his second year on the job, but they got a gift here when the other team’s point guard got hurt.

                                11) Draymond Green’s one-game suspension cost him $120,000, which is pocket change to Green, but the public nature of it makes it way more significant than that. Green has been the heart of this Warrior dynasty; the most important player isn’t always the best player.

                                10) Chiefs-Rams line is now 3.5, moving up from 2 or 2.5 when game was scheduled to be played in Mexico City. Total doesn’t seem to have moved, staying at 63.5, the highest NFL total ever.

                                9) Michigan 73, Villanova 46— Some alum gave Villanova so much money they named their gym after him, then they had FS1 interview him during the game. Too bad he couldn’t play; Michigan avenged (somewhat) their loss to Villanova in the national title game last April.

This game was 44-17 at halftime. Wow.

                                8) SEC decided to make Nashville the permanent home of its conference basketball tourney, signing a deal to keep the event in Music City thru 2035.

                                7) IUPUI 76, Boston College 69— Jaguars from the Horizon League were 16-point underdogs; a 6-3 guard named Camron Justice torched the Eagles for 29 points.

                                6) Magic 111, 76ers 106— Philly led by 16 early in 4th quarter, losing Jimmy Butler’s debut with the 76ers. Orlando is 7-8 and appears to be an improved team- their last winning season was seven years ago.

                                5) Timberwolves 107, Pelicans 100— Minnesota’s first game with Saric/Covington; from this point on, their record will be measured against Philly, because of the big trade.

                                4) Pistons 106, Raptors 104— Reggie Bullock scored on an out-of-bounds play at the buzzer as Dwane Casey won his return to Toronto after the Raptors fired him last spring, despite a regular season record of 320-238 (21-30 in playoffs).

                                3) Radford 63, Notre Dame 60— Not as big an upset as we’d think; Radford won the Big South LY, won a play-in game, then lost to Villanova in NCAA’s. Highlanders were only a 12.5-point underdog; they’re in top 20 nationally in experience, top 50 in minutes continuity and they play a slow tempo, so they’re hard to guard.

                                2) Singer Billy Idol became a US citizen this week; good to see people who are so happy when they become citizens. This country was built by immigrants, something we shouldn’t forget.

                                1) NFL flexed the Steelers-Raiders game out of the Sunday night slot on December 9 (Week 14) and instead will show Rams-Bears on NBC. Should be nice and balmy in Chicago for a night game on December 9th. Do they think of the fans in Chicago who pay to go to these games?
