    • Thursday’s six-pack

From ***********, least profitable starting pitchers this year, based on $100/start:

      320. Homer Bailey (1-16) $-1,448

      319. Justin Verlander (15-12) $-1,283

      318. Clayton Kershaw (9-10) $-1,152

      317. Kenta Maeda (8-12) $-1,117

      316. Kyle Hendricks (12-14) $-1,106

      315. Alex Cobb (5-18) $-1,061

      Quote of the Day
“I wish everyone in the world was rich so they would realize that money isn’t everything.”
      NBA star DeMar DeRozan

      Thursday’s quiz
Right now, who is the head coach of the New York Knicks?

      Wednesday’s quiz
Bill Callahan replaced Jon Gruden as coach of the Raiders.

      Tuesday’s quiz
Texas Rangers won the AL but lost the World Series in both 2010, 2011; Ron Washington was their manager.

      ****************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

      13) Quality TV from the Mets’ crew Tuesday night when roving reporter Steve Gelbs asked pitcher Zach Wheeler if it bugs him when he gives up a hit that wouldn’t be a hit if the team hadn’t shifted, and Wheeler quickly replied “100%”

There are people online who keep track of “runs saved” with the shift; I mean, lot of hard drives up the middle are now caught by infielders, so the shift is useful, too, but there is a plus/minus that exists, and you just know it drives some guys nuts when the shift fails.

      12) Tampa Bay Rays were -$210 against the Royals Monday, which says a lot about how awful Kansas City is. Pretty interesting wagering quandary.

How can you lay $210 with a team, when you know the starting pitcher is going to get only four or five outs before he is removed, and you’re not totally sure who his replacement will be?

Rays won the game easily; the “opener” has changed baseball though, to a small degree.

      11) 2019 baseball season starts on March 28, except A’s/Mariners, who play two games over in Japan March 20-21. MLB decided to schedule some 2-game interleague series on weekends, so there will be teams who have Fridays off, which is weird. A’s have two Fridays off in August.

When they expand to 32 teams, and they will soon, scheduling will become much easier.

      10) Ever see American Restoration on the History Channel? Guy in Las Vegas who has a place that refurbishes old stuff (cars, Coke machines, wagons, motorcycles) and makes them look like new again. They do excellent work.

Saw an episode last night where they worked on one of Billy Joel’s motorcycles, then they delivered the finished bike to a shop Joel owns in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Pretty cool stuff.

      9) Random musical opinions:

      — Favorite Billy Joel song: Piano Man
      — Favorite Bob Seger song: Turn the Page
      — Favorite Van Morrison song: Into the Mystic

      8) Buster Posey is likely going to have season-ending hip surgery, which will probably also end his career as a catcher. Does that mean the Giants will trade Brandon Belt this winter?

      7) Nationals’ TV analyst FP Santangelo told a story on air Tuesday night about when he was playing and his best friend on the team got traded, and Santangelo went 0-20 right after that, as it became painfully obvious to him that baseball is indeed a business.

I’m trying to remember what old-time player told this next story, I want to say Al Kaline, but I’m not 100% sure. Anyway, when the young player first came up to the majors, one of the established stars of the team came up to him and said, “…..they cut our friend to bring you up” and then walked away from the young guy, and they weren’t nice to him until he established himself as a really good player. Nowadays, young players get treated a lot better.

      6) Washington didn’t trade Bryce Harper to the Dodgers (who claimed him on waivers) because they know they can get a first-round draft pick if he bolts in free agency this winter.

      5) There are some people on Twitter pushing for an 8-team college football playoff, which would involve getting rid of conference championship games, and playing the first round of the playoff tournament at campus sites. Not a bad idea.

      4) Former Arizona Cardinals’ coach Bruce Arians will work for CBS on NFL games this fall, along with Greg Gumbel and Trent Green. Curious to hear Arians analyze games.

      3) Major league All-Star Game was later than normal this year; it is earlier than normal (July 9) next summer, in Cleveland.

      2) From ***********, most profitable starting pitchers this year, based on $100/start:

      1. Mike Fiers (16-8) $1,467
      2. Mike Leake (17-8) $1,256
      3. Jhoulys Chacin (19-8) $1,164
      4. Eduardo Rodriguez (16-3) $1,160
      5. David Price (18-6) $1,094
      6. Aaron Nola (18-7) $1,039
      7. Yovani Gallardo (9-2) $951

      1) Worlds colliding; You know I love college basketball and Seth Davis is a college basketball analyst for CBS and writes for The Athletic. It is just odd to me that Davis’ father is Lanny Davis, Michael Cohen’s lawyer, who is on national TV about every 90 seconds this week.

      • LEADING OFF: Nola vs Scherzer; deGrom faces Bumgarner
        August 23, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

        PRIZE FIGHT

Top contenders for the NL Cy Young Award square off when Aaron Nola (14-3, 2.24 ERA) and the Phillies face Max Scherzer (16-5, 2.11) and the Nationals in their series finale. Nola is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in two starts this season against Washington, which has won consecutive games against Philadelphia since trading away Daniel Murphy and Matt Adams. The second-place Phillies are three games behind Atlanta in the NL East, while the Nationals are 7+ games back.

        PAIR OF ACES

In another marquee matchup on the mound, it's Jacob deGrom (8-7, 1.71 ERA) and the Mets hosting Madison Bumgarner (4-5, 3.05) and the Giants for a Citi Field matinee. Also a leading candidate for the NL Cy Young, deGrom is coming off his third career complete game and first this season last Saturday in a 3-1 win at Philadelphia. Bumgarner is 5-0 with a 0.47 ERA in five starts at Citi Field. He last faced New York in the 2016 NL wild-card game, pitching a four-hit shutout that sent San Francisco to the NLDS.

        E-WING SWINGIN'

Boston tries to slow down Edwin Encarnacion and the Indians as the major league-leading Red Sox seek a split of their four-game series between AL division leaders. Encarnacion cleared the Green Monster twice Wednesday night after being sidelined since Aug. 12 with a bruised right wrist, though Boston still beat Cleveland 10-4 to end a three-game skid. Encarnacion has 27 homers and is trying to reach 30 for the seventh straight season, stretching the longest active streak in the majors. Red Sox left-hander David Price (13-6, 3.69) is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA since the All-Star break.

        IMMEDIATE DIVIDENDS

Cole Hamels is 3-0 with a 0.72 ERA in four starts for the NL Central-leading Cubs since they acquired him from Texas in a July 27 trade. Hamels pitches the opener of a four-game series at Wrigley Field against last-place Cincinnati. One day after obtaining Daniel Murphy from Washington to boost their sagging lineup, the Cubs finally broke loose Wednesday night in an 8-2 victory at Detroit. Chicago, which homered three times, had scored exactly one run in each of its previous five games. Murphy singled home a run in his first game with the Cubs.

        TOO HOT CORNER

Wil Myers' move to third base got messy Wednesday. The Padres' infielder was scratched from a game against Colorado with a cut on his nose after taking a grounder to the face while practicing at his new position. Myers was fielding grounders at third during batting practice when a ball went over his glove and struck him. He left the field holding a towel over his face with a trainer near his side. Myers was scheduled to make his eighth start at the hot corner as San Diego experiments with sliding the veteran outfielder and first baseman across the diamond.

                  • Nola outpitches Scherzer, Phils top Nats in aces' duel
                    August 23, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Aaron Nola outdueled Max Scherzer in a meeting of All-Star aces, Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals 2-0 Thursday.

Nola (15-3) was masterful in his matchup with the three-time Cy Young Award winner, allowing five hits and one walk. He escaped his biggest jam with his final pitch, striking out Bryce Harper with runners on first and second to end the eighth.

Nola struck out nine and finished with a 2.13 ERA - the exact same ERA as Scherzer.

Scherzer (16-6) was nearly as good in the first matchup of starters with at least 150 innings and a sub-2.25 ERA since St. Louis' John Tudor faced Mets ace Dwight Gooden on Sept. 11, 1985. Scherzer gave up two hits in seven innings and struck out 10, increasing his major league-leading total to 244.

Pat Neshek pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

                    BRAVES 5, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his 21st home run and got hit by another Miami pitch, though tempers stayed in check this time and Atlanta went on to win.

It was the first meeting between the teams since the Aug. 15 game in which Miami starter Jose Urena earned a six-game suspension by plunking Acuna on his first and only pitch. This time, no hysterics broke out.

And in the end, it was more of the same for Sean Newcomb and the Braves when they face the Marlins. Newcomb (11-7) allowed two hits and struck out eight in six shutout innings, improving to 4-0 with a 0.75 ERA in four starts against Miami this season.

Charlie Culberson and Ender Inciarte also homered for Atlanta, which remained three games ahead of second-place Philadelphia in the NL East.

Marlins starter Elieser Hernandez (2-7) lasted three innings, giving up three hits - two of them homers - and three runs.

                    CUBS 7, REDS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Cole Hamels tossed a complete game to continue his dramatic turnaround with NL Central-leading Chicago, which got home runs from Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez to beat Cincinnati.

Hamels (4-0) allowed eight hits, struck out seven and walked two in his 17th career complete game and the first by a Cubs pitcher this season. His ERA in five starts with Chicago is 0.72.

Rizzo went 2 for 2 with a walk and three RBIs.

Baez was 3 for 5, reached on an error and scored three runs. The homer, his 27th, was a mammoth 481-foot solo shot that cleared the bleachers just left of straightaway center.

The Reds jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Cubs quickly answered. After Baez reached on an error with one out, Rizzo hit the first pitch he saw from Anthony DeSclafani (6-4) into the bleachers in right. Baez's homer in the third made it 3-1.

                    ROCKIES 4, PADRES 3

DENVER (AP) - Ian Desmond hit a two-run, two-out homer in the ninth inning, and Colorado beat San Diego.

Desmond lined an 88-mph splitter from reliever Kirby Yates (4-3) over the fence in left after Trevor Story singled earlier in the ninth and stole second. It was Desmond's second career walk-off homer. His other was May 2, 2012, against Arizona.

Matt Holliday was in Colorado's starting lineup for the first time in a decade after having his contract selected from Triple-A Albuquerque. He went 0 for 3.

The Rockies overcame a baserunning blunder early and a costly error late to take two of three games from the Padres and move within one game of first-place Arizona in the NL West.

Chris Rusin (1-2) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.

                    RED SOX 7, INDIANS 0

BOSTON (AP) - David Price pitched eight shutout innings for his fifth straight win, backed by three bases-loaded doubles in a six-run fifth inning, and Boston beat Cleveland to split their four-game series.

After losing the first two games, Boston won twice in 20 hours to open a 9+-game lead over the idle New York Yankees in the AL East. The Red Sox, who have the best record in baseball at 90-39, have not lost four games in a row all season, and they are the only team in the majors that has not been swept.

Price (14-6) gave up three hits against the AL Central leaders and no walks, hitting a batter and striking out seven before leaving to a standing ovation after the top of the eighth.

Adam Plutko (4-4) matched him into the fifth, when Sandy Leon led off with a ground-rule double. Boston added three more doubles in the inning to make it 6-0.

                    TWINS 6, ATHLETICS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - With a two-run double by pinch-hitter Mitch Garver, Minnesota overtook Oakland starter Trevor Cahill in the fourth inning on the way to victory.

The A's lost consecutive games for the second time in more than two months and dropped 1+ games behind AL West-leading Houston.

Joe Mauer singled in the fourth to tie Rod Carew for second on the club's career hits list, driving in Minnesota's fifth run against Cahill (5-3). The right-hander took his first defeat since May 16, and the A's lost with him on the mound for the first time since June 2.

Khris Davis moved into the major league lead with his 39th home run, a no-doubt drive to start the second inning against Twins starter Kohl Stewart, who was removed with two outs in the fifth. Reliever Alan Busenitz (4-0) picked up the win.

Trevor Hildenberger shook off Jed Lowrie's two-out homer in the ninth to finish his fourth save in as many opportunities since closer Fernando Rodney was traded to the A's two weeks ago.

                    GIANTS 3, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner hit an RBI double for the only earned run off New York ace Jacob deGrom and topped him on the mound, too.

In his first appearance in New York since tossing a four-hit shutout in the 2016 NL wild-card game, Bumgarner (5-5) allowed one run on five hits in eight innings. He struck out eight and walked none.

Bumgarner extended his scoreless streak at Citi Field to 33 innings before Todd Frazier homered to begin the seventh. The big lefty is 7-0 with a 1.42 ERA in eight starts against the Mets.

DeGrom (8-8) went six innings and exited with a major league-best 1.71 ERA. He allowed two runs overall on four hits, striking out 10 with a season-high four walks.

Will Smith worked around a two-out walk to Jose Bautista in the ninth for his 11th save in 13 opportunities.

                    RAYS 4, ROYALS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - A throwing error on Kevin Kiermaier's bases-loaded grounder in the ninth inning helped Tampa Bay complete a four-game sweep of Kansas City.

Jake Bauers opened the ninth by drawing a walk from Brian Flynn (4-4) and went to third on C.J. Cron's single.

After Joey Wendle grounded out and Willy Adames was intentionally walked to load the bases, Kiermaier grounded a 3-2 pitch to first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, who made a wild toss to the plate.

Sergio Romo (3-3) worked a perfect ninth as Tampa Bay improved to a season-high six games over .500 (67-61) with its fifth consecutive victory.

Kansas City, which has lost 17 of 21, fell 52 games under .500 (38-90) and was eliminated from the playoff race.

                    TIGERS 7, WHITE SOX 2

DETROIT (AP) - Matthew Boyd pitched six scoreless innings and Ronny Rodriguez hit his first career home run to lift Detroit over Chicago.

Rodriguez also hit an RBI double, and Nicholas Castellanos and Mikie Mahtook homered off James Shields (5-15). All three of Detroit's homers were solo shots in the sixth inning.

Boyd (8-11) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out six.

Jose Rondon hit a two-run homer in the eighth for the White Sox, who fell to 3-10 this season against Detroit.

                      • LEADING OFF: Holliday rejoins Rockies, Moreland hurts knee
                        August 23, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

                        HAPPY HOLLIDAY

Matt Holliday takes aim at getting his first hit of the season. The 38-year-old outfielder returned to the Rockies on Thursday for the first time in a decade and went 0 for 3 against San Diego. The seven-time All-Star signed a minor league deal last month after hitting .231 with 19 home runs for the Yankees last year. Colorado hosts St. Louis this weekend.

''I'm grateful to be back,'' said Holliday, who hit .319 with 128 homers for the Rockies from 2004-08.

                        CHECK HIM

The Red Sox will see how first baseman Mitch Moreland is feeling, a day after he bruised his left knee sliding near a photo pit chasing a foul popup at Fenway Park. Moreland left the game soon after that.

Moreland, who had knee trouble earlier this year, is hitting .259 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs for the team with the best record in the majors. He was an All-Star for the first time this season. Boston plays at Tampa Bay over the weekend.

                        EASY, ROOK

San Francisco right-hander Dereck Rodriguez (6-1, 2.25 ERA) is set to come off the disabled list to face Texas at home. The son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez recently strained his hamstring when he ran out of the dugout during a dustup between the Giants and Dodgers. He's won five straight decisions and his name is now in the NL Rookie of the Year conversation.

                        STUCK

Former home run champ Chris Davis is trying to avoid having the worst batting average for a full-time player since 1900. The Baltimore slugger is hitting .163 heading into this weekend at Camden Yards against the Yankees. Davis is in jeopardy of finishing below the .179 mark by Rob Deer in 1991 and Dan Uggla in 2013. At 32, Davis still has four more seasons left on a $161 million, seven-year contract. He has 15 homers and 41 RBIs, and has struck out 158 times in 386 at-bats this year.

''For me, I want to finish up strong. I want to work on some things and go into the offseason with a head of steam,'' he said.

                        SLUMPING

Tigers rookie Mike Gerber is in an 0-for-30 slump, striking out 17 times in that span. The 26-year-old outfielder got four hits in his first 12 at-bats after making his major league debut this season, but nothing since. Detroit continues its home series this weekend against the White Sox.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……

                          13) Next weekend, after the last preseason games, NFL teams will cut their rosters from 90 guys to 53; thats 1,184 players who will be out of a job. Lot of them will move to other teams and make other guys unemployed; couple hundred will get signed to practice squads, but it is high drama and it is why the last episode of Hard Knocks (Sept 4) will be excellent TV.

                          12) 2019 baseball schedule notes:
In addition to the A’s-Mariners series in Japan next March, Monterrey, Mexico will host a couple of two-game series; Reds-Cardinals in April, Angels-Astros in May.

AL East rivals New York-Boston are playing a two-game series in London in late June.

Royals-Tigers will play a game in Omaha, two days before the College World Series starts.

Pirates-Cubs are playing in the Little League Classic, in Williamsport.

                          11) The NL Wild Card race is so tightly bunched; someone came up with a scenario where eight teams in the NL would all wind up with the same record. How would those ties be broken?

Here’s the thing: right now, the current tie-breaking procedures don’t go any further than a four-way Wild Card tie. What if five teams tie? Its not likely, but it could happen.

                          From MLB.com:
“If MLB found itself in a situation not covered by the existing rules, it would be up to the Commissioner’s Office — likely with input from the Competition Committee — to determine the best course of action.”

                          10) Tampa Bay Rays swept a 3-game series in Kansas City May 14-16; of the 25 Rays who were in that series, only ten of them are still with Tampa Bay, and they’re somehow 66-61. Tremendous amount of turnover during the season for a major league team.

                          9) Browns 5, Eagles 0— Third week of exhibition games are supposed to be dress rehearsals for the regular season opener; this game was very, very ugly. Both teams have reason to worry about their offense.

Back in 1970, an NFL playoff game also ended 5-0; Dallas beat Detroit. I was 10 at the time, so not sure if that game was as bad as this one, but it was a more important one.

                          8) MGM is opening a new hotel/casino in Springfield, MA this weekend; they’ve been sending me lot of info, both online and in mail- I live 90 miles from Springfield. Aggressive marketing.

                          7) Bill Parcells turned 77 years old this week; as a player, he was a tackle drafted in the 7th round of the 1964 draft by the Detroit Lions.

The pick before Parcells? Cowboys drafted WR Bob Hayes, who was a very fast man- he played 11 years in the NFL and averaged 20 yards per catch.

                          6) Madison Bumgarner is also one of only five players in baseball to hit a home run off each of Jacob deGrom, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. Bumgarner, obviously, is the only pitcher to do that.

Other four: Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos González, Hunter Pence and Gregory Polanco

                          5) Royals’ 2B Whit Merrifield is the only player this season with three hitting streaks of 12+ games.

                          4) One thing I’ve learned from watching too much TV: everyone who rides one of those Peloton exercise bikes looks like a model or an Olympic athlete. Maybe I should get one; my current bike hasn’t improved my looks any (its a joke!!!)

Peloton must have an unlimited advertising budget; commercials are on all the time.

                          3) From Covers, the best “over” umpires in the majors:
                          1. Chris Guccione 16-4
                          2. David Rackley 14-5
                          3. Adrian Johnson 16-6
                          4. Brian Knight 15-6
                          5. Roberto Ortiz 7-3
                          t6. Ted Barrett 16-7
                          t6. Jim Wolf 16-7
                          8. Kerwin Danley 15-7

                          2) Urban Meyer gets suspended for the first three games of the season, for not firing one of his assistant coaches, who should’ve been fired. Buckeyes’ first three games are against Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU- that TCU game will be very interesting.

If you care about such things, Ohio State was -12 over TCU before Meyer’s suspension; they are now -10.

                          1) Interim coach at Ohio State is Ryan Day, who was once a college QB at New Hampshire, where the offensive coordinator was a guy named Chip Kelly. There are rumors that Day passed on the chance to be the Tennessee Titans’ OC this season, in order to stay at Ohio State. Interesting decision.
