    • Thursday’s 6-pack

Odds on more teams to win the 2019 college basketball title next April:

      — Michigan State Spartans 15-1

      — Tennessee Volunteers 20-1

      — Auburn Michigan, Oregon 25-1

      — UCLA Bruins, West Virginia Mountaineers 30-1

      — Florida, Purdue, Texas Tech, Wichita State 40-1

      — Cincinnati, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State 50-1

      Tweet of the Day
“Every player has a right to express what he feels and what he thinks. I think he has every right to do that with every coach in the organization that he has relationships with, which we certainly do quite often. Look, this is probably a lot more important to people outside this organization than people inside. This doesn’t have any effect on our team. The rhetoric will not have anything to do with who’s the quarterback. That will obviously be decided on the field. Same parameters than before on who wins the team.”
      Nick Saban

      Thursday’s quiz
Which NFL team did Nick Saban once coach?

      Wednesday’s quiz
Kings County in New York is better known by another name, Brooklyn.

      Tuesday’s quiz
Everyone knows Jim Kelly played for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL, but he also played for the USFL’s Houston Gamblers, before he played in the NFL.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

      13) Made an appearance at Saratoga racetrack Wednesday with my cousins; I know very little about horse racing, but its a fun place to visit. Living 25 miles from the track, have been there dozens of times over the years, but horse racing is a very difficult game to beat.

My favorite horse? Mr Ed, the talking horse from an old TV show (look it up on YouTube).

      12) Free advice on going to Saratoga; eat before you go, because the vendors at Saratoga are the biggest thieves in America. Seriously.

How much would you pay for a (decent) hot dog and a 20-ounce bottle of Coke?

How much would you pay for a salty pretzel and a bottle of water?

Try $13 for the hot dog/soda, and $12 for the pretzel/water.

      $6 for a 20-ounce bottle of Coke?!?!?!?! $5 for a 20-ounce bottle of water???

To paraphrase John McEnroe, “You cannot be serious!!!!”

      11) Big-time rule change in college basketball: All players who get invited to the NBA Combine but go undrafted will have the option to return to their former school.

This is a tremendous rule change, it gives kids the option of going back to school or going to the G-League. It’ll help college basketball and it has no real downside that I can see.

      10) One rule change that didn’t happen was low-level staff members (like operations directors and video coordinators) being able to do on-court skill instruction.

Not sure why that isn’t allowed, but it still isn’t.

      9) 13 football players at North Carolina will be suspended for selling team-issued Jordan sneakers given to them by the school. 10 of the 14 players will be suspended for four games.

Chazz Surratt was supposed to be the Tar Heels’ QB this season; he is done for four games, which is a major problem for North Carolina.

      8) From CBS sports.com, also regarding sneakers:

“According to the NYPD and Homeland Security Investigations, five individuals in New York who smuggled several thousand pairs of fake Nike Air Jordan shoes into New York and New Jersey have been caught red-handed. The estimated total amount of the stock had the sneakers been authentic, per ABC News, is roughly $73 million.”

Each defendant in the case faces a maximum potential sentence of 20 years in prison.

      7) This is my annual complaint that Little League games shouldn’t be on national TV; too much pressure on 11-13 year olds. Imagine being a kid who messes up in a game and his team loses and he has to live in that town the rest of his life? Or be shown on SportsCenter?

      6) So there are cars wth push-button ignitions; I had no idea about this until a couple of years ago when I was in Las Vegas. Rented a car, which was parked in the parking garage— it is 110 degrees in the garage, and I can’t figure out how to start the damn car. Would’ve been funny, if I wasn’t the fool who couldn’t start the car. Luckily I figured it out before I sweated thru my clothes.

Not sure what the advantage of a keyless ignition is, but they’re advertising them on TV, so they must be a big deal.

      5) Second time in three years on Hard Knocks for DC Browns’ Gregg Williams, who was with the Rams two years ago. Hope this season turns out better for him than that one did.

      4) Indians 5, Twins 2— Francisco Lindor hit his 2nd career walk-off HR in this game; his 67 extra-base hits lead the majors this season.

      3) Mets 8, Reds 0— Jacob deGrom’s first win since June 18 in Denver.

      2) Kentucky is playing four exhibition games in the Bahamas this week and SEC Network or some ESPN channel is showing all of them.

      1) The family of billionaire Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos should owe the state of Michigan $2.4M in taxes on her family yacht that is cruising the Great Lakes this summer- but the yacht is registered as a foreign vessel from the Cayman Islands, so they dodge the taxes everyone else pays.

Who knows, maybe that $2.4M could help fix the water pipes in Flint, MI? Go figure.

      • LEADING OFF: Struggling Seattle faces Houston, Porcello up
        August 8, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

        LOSING GROUND

Struggling Seattle turns to ace James Paxton as it opens a series against AL West-leading Houston. The Mariners have lost seven of nine overall and three of Paxton's past four starts dating to July 7. Paxton (9-5, 3.51) will oppose Justin Verlander (11-6, 2.19), who struck out 14 last time out in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers. Seattle is eight games back of the Astros and also chasing Oakland in the AL wild-card race.

        RICK ROLLING

Rick Porcello starts for Boston against Toronto coming off an astounding game against the Yankees. Porcello (14-4, 3.84) carved up New York, completing nine innings of one-hit ball on just 86 pitches in a 4-1 victory. The only blemish on his stat line was a homer allowed to Miguel Andujar. Porcello, the 2016 AL Cy Young Award winner, has 20 strikeouts and two walks over his past three starts combined.

        GOING, GOING, GALLO

Joey Gallo is on a tear for the Texas Rangers. Gallo slugged two homers in an 11-7 win over Seattle on Wednesday, and he enters a series at Yankee Stadium having hit 10 of his 31 homers in his past 19 games. He also had three hits Wednesday to lift his batting average over .200 for the first time since June 16. The 24-year-old is closing in on his career high of 41 homers, reached last season. New York starter J.A. Happ is set to be activated following a bout with hand, foot and mouth disease.

        BIG FOUR

The Rockies are trying to keep pace with the Diamondbacks and Dodgers in the NL West race, and they have a chance to make progress during a four-game series against Los Angeles. Tyler Anderson (6-4, 4.05) takes the Coors Field mound for Colorado in the opener against Ross Stripling (8-3, 2.68), whose breakout season hit a bump with a pair of shaky outings late in July followed by a DL stint with an inflamed toe on his right foot.

MLB Baseball Odds - Seattle Mariners at Houston Astros

The Seattle Mariners are fading fast, and if they don’t turn it around, playoff hopes are going to disappear. Seattle looked to be in good shape to claim the second wild card spot in the American League several weeks ago but the Athletics have zoomed past them. The Mariners need to string together some wins but get a tough matchup next time out against the Houston Astros.

The Astros are leading the American League West and are the defending World Series champions. They would normally be big home favorites in this one but they are missing some key bats, which gives the Mariners a chance at pulling off the upset.

Houston is in good shape to win the division but it’s not a done deal quite yet as it needs to continue winning while dealing with some notable injuries. Seattle needs this victory even more but will have to knock around one of the Cy Young leading contenders in MLB wagering.

This MLB baseball game between the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners will be held at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas at 7 p.m ET on Thursday, August 9th.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                  Odds Analysis

The Mariners have a record of 65-50 on the season but have a negative-29 run-differential, which is not a good sign for the rest of the way. Seattle has gone 29-26 on the road this year and hopes to pick up another win in this one but it won’t be easy.

The Astros are 73-42 overall, which is the second-best record in the major leagues behind the Red Sox. Houston is 32-24 at home this season, which is not as good as its record on the road but is still solid.

The scoring total could be low as two standout pitchers face off on the mound.

                  Probable Pitchers

The Astros will send veteran right-hander Justin Verlander to the hill. The ace comes into this game with an ERA of 2.19 and a record of 11-6. The 35-year-old captured his latest win against the Dodgers on August 3rd. He pitched 7.2 innings in that game, allowing four hits and one run while striking out 14. Verlander is among the American League leaders in nearly every pitching category and hopes to continue his fantastic season with another strong outing.

The Mariners plan to counter with talented left-hander James Paxton. He has a record of 9-5 with an ERA of 3.51 and has had his way against the Astros this season. In his most recent showing against Houston on July 30th, Paxton pitched seven innings and allowed three runs and no hits in a 2-0 shutout. He also captured two more wins against the Astros this year, only allowing two runs in the three previous matchups.

                  Injury Update

The Astros are going to be without their three best position players in this matchup due to injury. Shortstop Carlos Correa is expected to return from a back injury this weekend but is not expected to be available for this game. Jose Altuve and George Springer are still sidelined with knee and thumb injuries, respectively.

All three are All-Star caliber players and are a big reason why the team won last year’s championship. Houston has depth so it can stay afloat without them but does not have the same high ceiling.

                  Free MLB ATS Picks

The absence of so many key offensive pieces is a blow to the Astros, but they are at home and sending a dominant pitcher to the mound. Houston has still won games without its star trio and will pick up another one here.

The loss will be another blow to Seattle’s sinking playoff chances in MLB gambling.

MLB ATS Pick: Astros 4, Mariners 2

                      • Friday’s 6-pack

                        — Cleveland Indians are 27-8 vs division rivals Royals-Tigers-White Sox; they’re 37-42 vs everyone else.

                        — Memo to NFL officials: don’t call taunting penalties!!!!

                        — Browns went 4-0 in preseason LY, then went 0-16 in games that count.

                        — Why do the Browns’ jerseys say “Cleveland” on them? They look like damn high school jerseys.

                        — For next four weeks, daytime TV consists on re-runs of NFL preseason games. This is good.

                        — There was a delay in the White Sox game Wednesday night because a moth flew into the ear of home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman, and it needed to be removed.

                        Tweet of the Day
“I’ve had some really good teammates. One guy? It would be (Nick) Markakis for me. First of all, I played with him the longest. He always said the right things when they needed to be said. He didn’t say much, but whenever he did, people listened. And he played the game the right way. We’re plumbers, we show up every day for work, good, bad and the ugly and we live with the results each day. And the way he approached this game, and still approaches the game, is something that not just myself, but a lot of people in this clubhouse, have modeled themselves after.”
                        Adam Jones

                        Friday’s quiz
Who coached Cleveland Browns last time they made the playoffs?

                        Thursday’s quiz
Nick Saban went 15-17 in two seasons coaching the Miami Dolphins.

Friday’s List of 13: NFL games with interesting subplots:

Week 1: Falcons @ Eagles: Philly beat Atlanta 15-10 in playoffs LY, went on to win their first Super Bowl title, with their backup QB playing- now Carson Wentz is back under center. Falcons lost Super Bowl two years ago. Matt Ryan is from Philly.

Week 2: Dolphins @ Jets: If I owned the Dolphins, would damn sure want to know how the hell we’re 1-6 in our last seven games against the Jets? Miami lost last three visits to the Swamp, by 38-20/34-13/20-6 scores. Will Sam Darnold be the Jets’ QB by then?

Giants @ Cowboys: Big Blue visited Dallas in Week 1 four of the last five years; they have to wait until Week 2 this year. This matchup must get consistently high TV ratings, but an NFC East squad won the Super Bowl last year, and it wasn’t either one of these teams.

Week 3: Titans @ Jaguars: Jacksonville made playoffs LY for first time in 10 years, but they got swept by the Titans, 37-16/15-10. Jaguars were +10 in turnovers last year, but were -5 vs Tennessee- they scored only two offensive TD’s in 26 drives against the Titans.

Patriots @ Lions: Matt Patricia is the Lions’ new coach; he’s come a long way from his days as a college student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), located in Troy, NY, just over the river from Armadillo World HQ. This matchup vs Brady/Belichick is the NBC Sunday night game.

Week 4: Chiefs @ Broncos: Kansas City is starting Patrick Mahomes at QB; he is basically a rookie- his only start was a 27-24 win here LY. Four of the Chiefs’ first six games this year are on road, at Chargers, Steelers, Broncos, Patriots. Tough start for a young QB.

Week 6: 49ers @ Packers: Same thing for the 49ers; four of their first six games are on the road, at Vikings, Chiefs, Chargers, Packers. Was 49ers’ strong finish LY a sign of future promise, or were they merely passing tired horses? By time this game is over, we may know.

Week 7: Chargers @ Browns: Cleveland is 1-31 the last two years; they beat Chargers 20-17 here in Week 16 of 2016 for the only win, then lost to them 19-10 (+14) in Carson LY. Chargers are on their way to London after this game, for a 6:30am PST game with the Titans in Week 8.

Week 8: Saints @ Vikings: I’m guessing New Orleans has this game circled on their calendar, after their defensive meltdown at the end of last year’s 29-24 playoff loss on this field.

Week 9: Raiders @ 49ers: “I could fly to LA for a haircut faster than I could drive to Santa Clara” Mark Davis is moving his team to Las Vegas because he didn’t want to share this stadium with the 49ers. Well, he has to drive to Santa Clara for this Thursday night game.

Week 12: Six NFC teams are playing on Thanksgiving: Bears-Lions, Redskins-Cowboys and Falcons-Saints. Smart to have divisional games on Thursdays, with less prep time.

Jaguars @ Bills: Last year’s unlikely playoff game: Jaguars 10, Bills 3. Buffalo made playoffs for first time in 19 years, then sent their QB packing. Interesting decision; was it smart? Visiting Buffalo on Thanksgiving weekend means cold weather will probably be a factor.

                        Week 13:
49ers @ Seahawks: Richard Sherman’s return to Seattle is a Sunday night game.

                        • LEADING OFF: Betts rolls to Baltimore, Correa comes off DL
                          August 9, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                          MOOKIE MANIA

Mookie Betts tries to follow up his first career cycle when Boston opens a series at Baltimore. The AL MVP contender homered off Ken Giles in the ninth inning Thursday to complete his first career cycle, though the Red Sox still lost 8-5. A trip to Camden Yards doesn't figure to slow Betts - he's hit 13 homers there in 35 games, by far his most in any stadium other than Fenway Park. Betts is hitting .347 with 27 homers, 59 RBIs and a 1.102 OPS this season.

                          HEALTH SCARE

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen has been sent back to Los Angeles after being hospitalized Thursday with an irregular heartbeat. Jansen has dealt with an irregular heartbeat in the past, and manager Dave Roberts said the right-hander will visit his cardiologist in LA. Roberts said the team is ''holding out hope it's not too serious.'' Roberts didn't know if the team would make a roster move in Jansen's absence.

                          CARLOS COMES BACK

Carlos Correa is expected back in the lineup for Houston. The star shortstop has been out with lower back soreness since June 25. Correa completed a rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi on Wednesday and was in Houston for a scheduled day off Thursday. Correa is batting .268 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs.

                          BOLSTERED BULLPEN

The Athletics have charged into the AL playoff picture with a never-say-die lineup, but Oakland is looking to make a name for keeping leads, too. Fernando Rodney may join the team Friday after being acquired via trade from Minnesota on Thursday night. The longtime closer joins a deep bullpen led by Blake Treinen, Lou Trivino and former Mets closer Jeurys Familia. That quartet could prove pivotal if Oakland winds up in the AL wild-card game. For now, the group will try to lock down victories as the A's open a series in Anaheim.

                          GRAY DAYS

Jon Gray aims to continue a strong second half of the season when Colorado hosts the Dodgers. Gray struggled hard in the first half, even getting demoted to Triple-A in early July, but he's been solid since returning to the majors. He's 2-0 with a 1.52 ERA in his past four starts, and the Rockies haven't lost with him on the mound since June 17. Kenta Maeda (7-7, 3.73) pitches for LA as the NL West contenders continue their four-game series.

                          • Irregular heartbeat forces Jansen home
                            August 10, 2018

DENVER (AP) Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen went to the hospital with an irregular heartbeat before a game Thursday against Colorado and will be sent back to Los Angeles for more tests.

Manager Dave Roberts said after the Dodgers' 8-5 win over the Rockies that Jansen was at the hotel earlier in the day and didn't feel right. Jansen called the trainer and was taken to the hospital.

Jansen has dealt with an irregular heartbeat in the past and will visit his cardiologist in Los Angeles. Roberts said the right-hander had his medication with him on the trip.

''We're holding out hope it's not too serious,'' Roberts said. ''In talking to the trainer right now, his mood is fine.''

Roberts didn't know if the team would make a roster move in Jansen's absence. Los Angeles plays three more games at Coors Field before returning home.

The Dodgers used Scott Alexander to close the ninth Thursday. Jansen is tied for the NL lead with 32 saves this season.

''Anytime you're talking about the heart and irregular heartbeat, you've got to be very careful with it,'' Roberts said. ''You're talking about altitude (in Denver). That's why we want to be proactive and get him back'' to Los Angeles.

Jansen spent a month on the disabled list during the 2011 season because of blood thinning medication he was taking to treat an irregular heartbeat. In 2012, he was out again after suffering an irregular heartbeat during an Aug. 27 appearance in Colorado. He underwent a procedure on his heart on Oct. 23, 2012, to return it to normal rhythm.

''Once he sees the doctors, the cardiologists - we'll know more about his timetable then,'' Roberts said.

King Felix bumped from M's rotation
                            August 10, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Seattle's Felix Hernandez has lost his spot in the rotation in the wake of his latest terrible start in a season filled with struggles.

The right-hander, who threw a perfect game in 2012, will pitch out of the bullpen for the first time in his career. He's having the worst season of 14-year career as the Mariners chase their first playoff berth since 2001. Hernandez has a career-high 5.73 ERA this season and is 0-4 in his last five starts, capped by a clunker against the Rangers on Tuesday when he allowed a career-high 11 runs - seven earned - on eight hits in six innings.

The six-time All-Star and 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner, who earned the nickname King Felix for his majestic presence on the mound, trotted from the dugout to the bullpen after the third inning Thursday night against Houston but did not pitch. Manager Scott Servais announced the decision postgame.

Servais said he spoke with Hernandez before the game and informed him of the decision. Hernandez has spent his entire career with the Mariners, where all his 398 appearances have been as a starter.

''He's done an unbelievable job as a Mariner,'' Servais said. ''And I certainly don't take any of this lightly, but I just think trying to make the best decision for the ballclub and really the best decision for Felix at this point is just take a breath. Step back, gather yourself.''

Servais said the conversation was a difficult one.

''Certainly, respect him and everything he's done here throughout his career, but these things happen and ultimately it's about the team,'' he said. ''It's never easy but again hopefully he takes it the right way. He'll get a chance to pitch at some point down there and maybe he can work his way back in the rotation. We'll see. He'll let us know on that.''

Hernandez declined to speak to reporters when approached after the game.

The 32-year-old right-hander is 168-124 with a 3.32 ERA in his career. But after posting an AL-leading and career-best 2.14 ERA in 2014, Hernandez has become increasingly less dominant each year, bottoming out this season by going 8-10 in 23 starts.

Hernandez got two wins to end the month of June before a terrible July where he went 0-3, with the lowlight coming when he allowed six hits and seven runs in just 2 2/3 innings of an 11-5 loss to the Angels.

Servais said the team hasn't decided who will take Hernandez's spot in the rotation Sunday in the finale of this four-game series.

A's bolster deep bullpen by landing Rodney
                            August 9, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Athletics have acquired closer Fernando Rodney from the Minnesota Twins.

The A's sent minor league right-hander Dakota Chalmers to Minnesota on Thursday to complete the deal that adds more depth to Oakland's stellar bullpen.

The 41-year-old Rodney is 3-2 with 25 saves and a 3.09 ERA in 46 relief appearances for Minnesota this season. The right-handed Rodney has 325 career saves, 17th most in baseball history.

Oakland acquired former Mets closer Jeurys Familia last month to go along with Blake Treinen and Lou Trivino in one of baseball's deepest bullpens.

The 21-year-old Chalmers pitched five scoreless innings in two games for Class A Beloit this season. He is 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in four minor league seasons with Oakland.
