      • Scherzer gets 13 strikeouts in 10th win, Nationals beat Rays
        June 5, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Max Scherzer pitched eight strong innings to become the first 10-game winner in the majors this season, striking out 13 in the Washington Nationals' 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.

Scherzer (10-1) won his ninth consecutive decision while scattering five hits and did not allow a runner past second base until pinch hitter Brad Miller's two-out double in the eighth.

Sean Doolittle pitched the ninth for his 15th save in 16 opportunities.

Scherzer struck out Johnny Field, Christian Arroyo and Daniel Robertson on a combined nine pitches in the sixth inning. It was the third nine pitch/three strikeout inning in Nationals history and the first since Scherzer did it against Philadelphia on May 14, 2017.

Tampa Bay starter Nathan Eovaldi (1-1) gave up four runs in five innings in his second start back from Tommy John surgery.

        RED SOX 6, TIGERS 0

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez hit his 20th home run, Steven Wright pitched seven sharp innings in his first start of the season and Boston blanked Detroit.

Xander Bogaerts also homered for the Red Sox, who have won six of eight and hold the best record in the majors at 42-19.

Wright (2-0), the knuckleballer who served a 15-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, allowed only two hits and struck out six with three walks.

Artie Lewicki (0-1) lasted 3 2/3 innings in his first major league start.

        YANKEES 7, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Miguel Andujar hit his first career grand slam, CC Sabathia pitched seven innings to snap a five-start winless streak and New York won for the sixth time in seven games.

Aaron Hicks added a three-run blast as the Yankees improved to 30-9 since a 9-9 start.

Andujar connected off right-hander Seunghwan Oh (1-2) in the seventh, his seventh home run of the season. He leads all big league rookies with 29 extra-base hits this season.

Sabathia (3-1) allowed two runs and three hits to win for the first time since April 29 against the Los Angeles Angels. The seven innings matched his season high.

        DODGERS 5, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joc Pederson, Yaisel Puig and Cody Bellinger hit home runs and surging Los Angeles won its fourth straight and 14th in the last 18.

Pederson hit a two-run shot off Joe Musgrove (2-1) in the second inning, Puig led off the fourth with his seventh of the season and Bellinger drilled a long blast that smacked off the batter's eye in center field against reliever Tyler Glasnow in the sixth.

Ross Stripling (4-1) remained unbeaten as a starter this season, striking out seven while giving up four singles in five innings. The Dodgers moved back to .500 (30-30) for the first time since April 24.

Pittsburgh has been shut out three times in a week and dropped 13 of 17 overall to fall to .500 (30-30) for the first time this season.

        TWINS 4, WHITE SOX 2, 1st game; WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 3, 2nd game.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game of a doubleheader to spoil Zack Littell's major league debut and help Chicago bounce back from a late lapse in the opener.

In the first game, Eduardo Escobar hit a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth against Nate Jones (2-2) as the Twins ruined a stellar start by White Sox right-hander Reynaldo Lopez.

Abreu, who hit an RBI double in the opener, hit a first-pitch fastball from Littell (0-1) left over the middle of the plate onto the grass berm beyond center field. With an RBI single by Kevan Smith and an RBI double by Adam Engel, the White Sox staked starter Lucas Giolito (4-6) to a 4-0 lead.

Littell, added as the 26th player for the doubleheader, was acquired last July 30 from the New York Yankees in a trade for starting pitcher Jaime Garcia. The 22-year-old got nine outs, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks.

Escobar did his best to bring the Twins back again, with RBI doubles in the third and the eighth innings. The White Sox bullpen held this time, though. Luis Avilan struck out Max Kepler with men on second and third in the eighth, and Joakim Soria fanned Mitch Garver. Soria had runners at the corners in the ninth, but he finished his fifth save in seven opportunities.

Escobar went 5 for 8 with five RBIs in the doubleheader.

Tyler Duffey (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory in the first game, and Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save in 16 attempts and 11th in a row.

        ORIOLES 2, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Cobb delivered his best performance since signing a rich contract with Baltimore late in spring training, helping the Orioles break a seven-game losing streak by beating New York.

The major league-worst Orioles ended their longest skid of the season and sent the slumping Mets to their fifth loss in a row. New York has dropped seven straight at Citi Field and 12 of 15 overall.

Cobb (2-7) gave up one run and two hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking one. Richard Bleier got Asdrubal Cabrera to ground into a double play with two on to end the eighth. Brad Brach closed for his ninth save, completing the three-hitter.

Baltimore scored two quick runs in the first against Jason Vargas (2-4).

        INDIANS 3, BREWERS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber scattered seven hits in seven strong innings and moved into a tie for the American League lead with his ninth win, leading Cleveland past Milwaukee.

Kluber (9-2) gave up a run, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter for the fifth straight start, a stretch of 35 1/3 innings. The right-hander is tied with New York's Luis Severino for the league lead in wins.

Jose Ramirez hit his 19th home run, a solo shot in the third. Lonnie Chisenhall, in his first at-bat in two months, drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the second.

Cody Allen gave up a leadoff homer to Travis Shaw in the ninth, but retired the next three hitters for his 10th save.

Junior Guerra (3-4) allowed three runs in six innings.

        ROCKIES 9, REDS 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Chris Iannetta hit a two-run homer off Anthony DeSclafani in his return to the mound, and Carlos Gonzalez added a three-run shot to power Colorado.

The Rockies ended a four-game losing streak that was their longest since they dropped eight in a row last June.

Left-hander Kyle Freeland (6-5) allowed three runs while pitching into the seventh. He also got his first RBI of the season with a bases-loaded walk as Colorado pulled away.

The Reds matched the third-worst start in franchise history at 21-40 despite getting one of their top pitchers back from his latest major injury.

DeSclafani (0-1) was activated off the disabled list before the game and got hit hard at the outset.

        MARINERS 7, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Kyle Seager, Mike Zunino and Jean Segura all homered off Dallas Keuchel early to back up another solid start by James Paxton and lead Seattle to its fifth straight win.

The Mariners, now two games ahead of the defending champion Astros atop the AL West, got going early as Seager hit a three-run homer in a four-run first. Zunino padded the lead to 6-0 with his two-run shot in the second.

Paxton (5-1) gave up nine hits but just one run in 7 2/3 innings to extend his winning streak to five games. Keuchel (3-8) tied a season-high by yielding seven hits and the seven runs were the most he's allowed this season. Marwin Gonzalez was a home run shy of the cycle and drove in Houston's only run with a second-inning double.

        RANGERS 7, ATHLETICS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking homer, one of Texas' season-high five on the night.

Beltre made it 5-4 when he connected off reliever Lou Trivino (3-1), who then walked Jurickson Profar before Joey Gallo pulled a two-run shot into the right-field seats. It was Gallo's 16th homer.

Shin-Soo Choo, Robinson Chirinos and Profar also homered for Texas.

Chris Martin (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for his first big league victory, and Keone Kela struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his 14th save - the most in the majors without a blown chance.

        PHILLIES 6, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Zach Eflin pitched into the eighth inning, Nick Williams homered and Philadelphia snapped a three-game slide.

Williams had three RBIs and Eflin (2-2) allowed one run and eight hits in a season-high 7 2/3 innings to end a two-game skid for his first win since May 7.

Seranthony Dominguez got the final three outs to extend his scoreless streak to 14 2/3 innings.

Anthony Rizzo had two hits and an RBI as Chicago's four-game winning streak came to an end.

Kyle Hendricks (4-5) allowed five runs and five hits in five innings.

        MARLINS 7, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Brian Anderson and J.T. Riddle homered to help a shaky Jose Urena get his first win of the season as Miami stopped a six-game losing streak.

Anderson had a two-run homer and two singles for the Marlins, who had lost nine of 10.

Urena (1-7) pitched five innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs for his first win in 13 starts. Kyle Barraclough pitched the ninth for second save.

Preston Guilmet (0-1) made his St Louis debut after the Cardinals called him up Tuesday from Triple-A Memphis. It was a forgettable one inning of work. In his first game against his former team, St. Louis' Marcell Ozuna went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

            Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

            13) Movie recommendation: I told you about the book last summer, but Molly’s Game the movie was even better. Very good.

Story deals with a young woman runs celebrity poker game in Los Angeles and New York City; she eventually gets in trouble with the law when she begins raking the pot, which is what makes it illegal. Having members of the Russian mob playing in her games complicates things.

Anyway, very good movie. Worth your time to watch it.

            12) Jake Arrieta’s complaints with the Phillies’ defensive shifts over the weekend confirmed what I had suspected; when the shifting doesn’t work, it drives some pitchers nuts.

            11) Sporting News ranked all 32 NFL starting QB’s; 19th for Cam Newton seems very low- 30th for Eli Manning seems ridiculously low.

            10) Max Scherzer got three strikeouts on nine pitches in the 6th inning vs Tampa Bay Tuesday, just the 92nd time this has happened in major league history.

            9) Good trivia, part 1; we talked yesterday about the A’s drafting Kyler Murray, the Oklahoma QB/CF. His dad and uncle were also outstanding athletes.

Turns out his uncle Calvin was the batter when Randy Johnson hit that bird with a pitched ball in a spring training game and the poor bird exploded in mid-air.

            8) Good trivia, part 2: When Jesse Owens won the gold medal in the 200-meter sprint in the 1936 Olympics, Mack Robinson won the silver medal- they both broke the previous Olympic record.

Mack Robinson was Jackie Robinson’s older brother.

            7) Vince McMahon’s XFL hired Oliver Luck (Andrew Luck’s dad) as Commissioner/CEO. The elder Luck was also once President of NFL Europe and AD at West Virginia- he was a backup QB for the Houston Oilers back in the day.

XFL starts in 2020; the AAF will also be a spring football league— it starts next year.

            6) Nebraska Cornhuskers signed dual-threat QB Luke McCaffery, the youngest son of former NFL WR Ed McCaffery, and brother of Panthers’ RB Christian McCaffery.

            5) A horse named Gronkowski is 12-1 to win the Belmont Stakes Saturday on Long Island.

            4) When a team is rebuilding like the Kansas City Royals are, they tend to draft more college players, since they’re obviously older than high school kids and generally take less time to get to the major leagues. The Royals need help.

First 11 players the Royals drafted this week are college players.

            3) A government contractor was taken into custody at a Secret Service checkpoint at the White House when he showed up for work. He was wanted for attempted murder. Yikes.

            2) Get well soon to New Jersey Giants’ GM Dave Gettleman, who diagnosed with lymphoma this week. Hope he is feeling better soon.

            1) RIP CM Newton, 88, former basketball coach at both Vanderbilt/Alabama, who was later the AD at Kentucky. He was the President of USA Basketball from 1992-96. RIP, sir.

            • LEADING OFF: Sho-time for Angels; Colon chases Marichal
              June 5, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

              SHO-TIME

Shohei Ohtani makes his ninth major league start on the mound as the Angels host Kansas City. Back on his usual once-a-week pitching schedule, the two-way rookie phenom from Japan is 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA. Los Angeles gave him extra rest before his most recent outing in Detroit.

              CHASING MARICHAL

Bartolo Colon gets his fourth crack at tying Hall of Famer Juan Marichal's 243 career wins, most for a pitcher born in the Dominican Republic, when the Texas Rangers play Oakland. The 45-year-old right-hander earned win No. 242 on May 16 when he threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings at Seattle. He is 0-2 with an 8.80 ERA over his last three starts. Colon (2-3) has pitched for 11 major league teams - including the Athletics from 2012-13. He was an All-Star for the A's at age 40 in 2013, when he went 18-6 with a 2.65 ERA in 30 starts.

              LAST GO ROUND

Baseball's amateur draft comes to an end with rounds 11-40 on Day 3. The Detroit Tigers took Texas second baseman Kody Clemens, the youngest son of seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, with the opening pick of the third round Tuesday. The younger Clemens, selected 79th overall, was the Big 12 player of the year and has helped the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament super regionals. He's hitting a team-leading .346 with 21 home runs, second-most in school history, and 68 RBIs as one of college baseball's top sluggers. Clemens is a semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy as the best player in the country. Kody Clemens was a 35th-round pick by Houston out of high school, but opted to go to his father's alma mater to play baseball. The left-handed hitter surpassed his two older brothers, Koby (Astros, 2005) and Kacy (Blue Jays, 2017), who were eighth-round picks in previous drafts.

              NEW FACES

After spending most of his career in the American League, Diamondbacks right-hander Clay Buchholz makes his second start against the Giants. The other one also came in San Francisco on June 26, 2010, for the Red Sox. Buchholz signed a minor league deal with Arizona last month after his release by the Royals.

                • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                  June 5, 2018

Hottest team: Mariners (14-3 last 17)

Nearly a week into June and the Astros are not leading the American League West race. Instead, it’s Seattle, who made a major statement in the series opener at Minute Maid Park by scoring six early runs in a 7-1 blowout of Houston. The Mariners extended their division advantage over the Astros to two games, while pulling off their fifth consecutive victory. During this hot stretch, Seattle has allowed one run in seven of the past 11 games.

The Mariners are a heavy underdog on Wednesday against Lance McCullers, Jr. and the Astros as the right-hander limited Seattle to one hit and one run in seven innings of a 4-1 in April. Wade LeBlanc counters for Seattle, as the Mariners own a 5-1 record in his six starts this season, while cashing the UNDER in all six of those outings.

Coldest team: Mets (2-10 last 12)

The month of May didn’t treat the Mets very well (10-18), but things have gone from bad to worse in the first week of June. New York has been amazingly bad by losing all five games on its current homestand, including Tuesday’s 2-1 setback to last-place Baltimore. The Mets followed up a six-run effort in four losses to the Cubs by scratching across a single run against the Orioles, but New York’s pitching has allowed four runs in the last two games.

New York finishes off its two-game interleague set with Baltimore prior to a visit from the Yankees this weekend. Zack Wheeler takes the mound for the Mets in this matinee affair as New York is winless in his past six starts, while the team is 0-5 in his five outings at Citi Field this season. The Mets look to avoid their fourth home sweep since the start of May, while Baltimore has won consecutive road games only twice this season.

Hottest pitcher: Daniel Mengden, Athletics (6-4, 2.91 ERA)

Since beginning the season at 0-2, Mengden has turned into one of the most reliable starters in baseball. Oakland has won eight of the right-hander’s last 10 starts with both losses coming to defending champion Houston. Mengden owns a 4-0 record in his past four outings, while yielding four earned runs in his last 30 innings of work. The Texas native looks to avenge a 6-3 home loss to the Rangers in April as Mengden takes the mound in Arlington trying to improve on a 3-1 road record this season.

Coldest pitcher: Ian Kennedy, Royals (1-6, 6.08 ERA)

It’s been a rough season in Kansas City for a team that is three years removed from hoisting the World Series trophy. The Royals continue their road trip against the Angels as Kennedy seeks his first win since April 7 at Cleveland as a +220 underdog. Kansas City owns an 0-5 record in Kennedy’s past five outings, including a 16-0 thrashing at the hands of Oakland last Friday in which the right-hander allowed eight runs in three innings. Kennedy pitched well against the Angels at home in April, giving up one earned run in six innings of a 7-1 defeat.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (6-0 last six)

Colorado’s pitching was torched in its three-game sweep at the hands of Los Angeles this past weekend by allowing 33 runs. The Rockies’ offense turned things around in Tuesday’s rout of the Reds at Great American Ballpark, 9-6 to continue their OVER streak. Colorado improved to 9-1 in their last 10 road series openers, while scoring at least four runs in 10 consecutive games overall. Jon Gray may be in line to keep this OVER streak going as the Rockies’ right-hander has given up 19 runs in his last four starts, while the OVER has hit in three of his four outings away from Coors Field this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Nationals (10-0 last ten)

Only on a 6 ½ total can you feel good about the UNDER hitting if Max Scherzer is on the mound. The three-time Cy Young Award winner tossed eight spectacular innings and struck out 13 batters in a 4-2 victory over Tampa Bay on Tuesday to barely cash the UNDER. Regardless, that streak is up to double-digits as the Nationals have not allowed more than four runs in any of their last 10 games. On the flip side, the offense has plated more than three runs only twice in the past five contests. Tanner Roark gets the start on Wednesday as the Nationals have drilled the UNDER in each of his last seven starts.

Matchup to watch: Phillies vs. Cubs

Philadelphia rebounded from an ugly weekend series sweep in San Francisco to cruise past Chicago, 6-1 at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. The Phillies not only cashed as +190 road underdogs, but their offense also got back into gear after getting limited to one run in the previous 27 innings. Meanwhile, the Cubs didn’t show much after a four-game sweep of the Mets at Citi Field as Chicago entered Tuesday’s action with a 7-1 record in the previous eight contests.

Aaron Nola heads to the mound for Philadelphia looking to keep his solid season going. The right-hander has put together an impressive 7-2 mark to go along with a 2.18 ERA, while the Phillies own a 7-1 record in his past eight trips to the hill. Nola has limited opponents to one run or less in five of his last six starts, while most recently cashing as a +150 road underdog against the Dodgers last Thursday in a 2-1 victory.

Jose Quintana counters for Chicago, as the southpaw is seeking consistency after tossing six scoreless innings in a 5-1 victory over the Mets last Thursday. Quintana has not delivered consecutive quality outings this season, while allowing 10 runs in his past two home starts against the Giants and Braves, both losses as a heavy favorite. The Cubs have done a solid job of bouncing back off a loss recently by going 6-1 in their last seven off a defeat since mid-May.

Betcha didn’t know: Since Sonny Gray was traded to the Yankees from Oakland last August, the right-hander has been the model of inconsistency in pinstripes. New York owns an 0-8 record when Gray takes the mound after the Yankees won in his previous outing. The Yankees are in this situation on Wednesday against the Blue Jays as New York won at Baltimore last Friday with Gray tossing six innings in a 4-1 victory.

Biggest public favorite: Angels (-260) vs. Royals

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (+100) vs. Dodgers

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (+130 to +120) vs. Yankees

New York went over the total in 13 of those games, under in 11, with one push. They are scoring 5.6 runs per game to lead the league while they are giving up about 3.8 runs per contest.

The Blue Jays were just 12-17 in their first 29 home games, with 10 games going over the total, 15 going under, with four pushes. They are scoring 4.6 runs per game and giving up 4.8 per contest.

                              Starting Pitchers

Sonny Gray is 4-4 on the season with a 5.50 ERA. He has been very inconsistent this season, but he did go six innings last time out and allowed just one run against the Blue Jays. Gray is 2-1 in his last three starts with a 3.57 ERA. New York has dropped three of Gray’s last four starts against Toronto.

Gaviglio is 2-1 on the season with a 3.32 ERA. He has thrown six innings in each of his last two starts. He has a 3.63 ERA as a starter. He went six innings last time out against Boston and allowed four runs and seven hits.

                              Key Stats

The Yankees are 7-16 in the last 23 meetings in Toronto. The teams split a four-game series in Toronto earlier this season, with three of the four going under the total. The Yankees are 19-7 in their last 26 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Yankees are 4-9 in Gray’s last 13 starts vs. the American League East. Gray has had all kinds of trouble stringing together two good starts in a row. The Yankees are 1-7 in Gray’s last 8 starts following a quality start. The Blue Jays are 1-5 in their last 6 home games vs. a right-handed starter.

Looking at the total, the Over is 7-2 in the Yankees last 9 road games. The Over is 22-10-1 in the Yankees last 33 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 8-3-1 in Gray’s last 12 starts overall. The Over is 17-6-3 in the Blue Jays last 26 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 25-10 in the last 35 meetings in Toronto.

                              Yankees vs. Blue Jays Picks

There is no question the Yankees are the better team and Toronto has not played well at home. The problem with backing the Yankees is that Gray has been very unreliable. He simply can’t put together two good starts in a row. Is that going to change on Wednesday night? He hasn’t had that much recent success against Toronto so it seems unlikely. I am tempted to take the plus money on the Blue Jays, but it is hard take an inferior team. I think the better choice is to play the total. Gray hasn’t been that good this season and I already talked about his trouble in pitching well in back-to-back starts. Gaviglio has been okay for Toronto, but he is facing a potent New York lineup that leagues the league in runs scored. I will go over the total in this Wednesday night contest.

Yankees vs. Blue Jays Pick: Over the total
Yankees vs. Blue Jays Score Prediction: Yankees 6, Blue Jays 5
