  • LEADING OFF: Reyes returns to Cards, Scherzer seeks No. 9
    May 30, 2018

A look at what's happening around baseball today:

    FIXED WING

Alex Reyes is set to return to Cardinals for the first time since his brief-but-stellar rookie season in 2016. The hyped right-handed prospect missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery and he'll come off the DL to make his season debut against NL Central-leading Milwaukee. Reyes struck out 44 in 23 innings during his minor league rehab assignment, including nine straight batters during his final start with Triple-A Memphis - a first in the 116-year history of the Pacific Coast League.

    CLOUD NINE

Max Scherzer tries to become the first nine-game winner in the majors when Washington takes on Baltimore. Scherzer (8-1, 2.13) has won seven straight decisions, including when he gave up four runs in six innings to Miami last time out. Scherzer entered Tuesday leading the majors in strikeouts (108) and wins above replacement (2.8), according to Fangraphs.

    BACK ON THE BUMP

Shohei Ohtani will return to the mound for the Angels in a game at Detroit. The two-way Japanese sensation had his usual turn Sunday skipped as Los Angeles tries to manage his workload. Ohtani (4-1, 3.35) threw 110 pitches against Tampa Bay in his previous start - his most in America so far - and has a 2.25 ERA in three May starts.

    SORE THOR

Jason Vargas, and not Noah Syndergaard, will start for the Mets in the finale of a series at Atlanta. Syndergaard was placed on the 10-day DL on Tuesday with a sore right index finger, though the Mets are hopeful he will only miss one start. The team is also hoping for good news on Steven Matz, another starter who left Tuesday's game with discomfort in the middle finger of his left hand.

    EOVALDI RETURNS

Rays right-hander Nathan Eovaldi is set for his first major league start since 2016 in a game against Oakland. Eovaldi had one of baseball's hardest fastballs before needing a second Tommy John surgery, which caused him to miss all of last season. He's taking the roster spot of reliever Jamie Schultz, who struck out the side in the seventh inning on 14 pitches in his major league debut Tuesday. Schultz was sent back to Triple-A.

    GETTING CHECKED

Astros catcher Brian McCann has left the team to return to Houston after being placed on the 10-day DL with right knee soreness. McCann is in a 1-for-26 slide and batting .219 on the season, and he reported soreness to manager A.J. Hinch during a game Monday at Yankee Stadium. Hinch said McCann was set to be evaluated further in Houston while the team finishes its series in New York. The Astros' Dallas Keuchel (3-6, 3.39) will face Luis Severino (7-1, 2.28) in the series finale.

    THE PAST IS PRESENT

The annual Rickwood Classic will be held in Alabama when the Birmingham Barons host the Chattanooga Lookouts in the Double-A Southern League. Opened in 1910, Rickwood Field is the oldest ballpark that continues to operate with pro ball in the United States. The Barons play one game a year at the park, which was the longtime home of the both the Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons - featuring the likes of Willie Mays and Satchel Paige - of the Negro Leagues. Babe Ruth swing away in exhibition games at Rickwood and Reggie Jackson played there when the Barons were an A's farm team. For the Rickwood Classic, the teams wear throwback uniforms and the outfield walls are often covered with old-timey ads. This year's game salutes the 1950s, when the Barons were a Yankees affiliate for a few years - Bucky Dent, who hit a famed 1978 playoff homer for the Yanks, is set to throw out the first pitch.

          Quote of the Day
“There remains a fundamental question the owners are going to have to address. When you take away the home plate umpire’s control over the strike zone, you take away a principal piece of his authority in terms of managing the whole game. You really need to think carefully about whether you want to make that change.”

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

          13) Didn’t write about this yesterday because I was trying to fully grasp whats going on, but there are strange doings on social media this week. Apparently 76ers’ GM Bryan Colangelo was discovered to be running five burner Twitter accounts, which did various things that a GM shouldn’t be doing, like disclosing players’ medical information and ripping his predecessor.

          12) 76ers put out a statement saying they’re investigating the whole thing.

Joel Embiid said “I talked to him and he said that he didn’t say that. He called me just to deny the story. Gotta believe him until proven otherwise. If true though, that would be really bad.”

One thing no one in Philly wants to do is tick off Embiid.

          11) There are 30 teams in the NBA- their draft is two rounds, so that is 60 guys who will get drafted in late June.

Last I heard, 77 kids have bolted college early for the NBA; when you add in foreign players and international players, going to be lot of disappointed kids after the draft. G-League draft will have lot of recognizable names in it.

          10) Cleveland Browns’ DB Demarious Randall tweeted this week that if the Cavaliers beat Golden State in the NBA Finals, he would buy everyone who re-tweeted his tweet a Cavaliers’ jersey (they cost around $100).

Well, 831,404 re-tweeted his tweet, and since Randall doesn’t make anywhere near $9M a year, he had to use the “obviously it was a joke” line, referring to his offer to buy lot of jerseys.

          9) Did some research this week; looking at which umpires call the highest %age of strikes, Here is part of what I found. Most every umpire is somewhere around 17%.

Highest %age of strikes called (for starting P’s only):
          Culbreth 20.8%, Greg Gibson 20.6%, Nelson 19.9%, Lentz 19.5%

          8) Lowest %age of strikes called (for starting P’s only):
          Reynolds 14.4%, Woodring 14.9%, Bucknor 15.4%, Welke 16.0%

          7) Duke, Northwestern, Purdue are leading the race for Clemson transfer QB Hunter Johnson, who has to sit this season out, but then will have three years to play. Johnson was rated asthe #2 pro-style passer in the 2017 recruiting class

          6) Cubs scored 8+ runs in seven of Jon Lester’s 11 starts.

          5) Dodgers put P Kenta Maeda (hip strain) on DL.
Phillies put LF Rhys Hoskins (jaw) on DL.

          4) Washington 3, Vegas 2— This is just third time since 2005 that Stanley Cup finals are tied 1-1.

          3) Nevada Wolf Pack got very good news Wednesday, as the Martin twins are coming back to Reno to play another year of ball, which makes the Wolf Pack a top 20 team.

          2) The baseball commissioner hinted this week that calling balls/strikes via automation isn’t impossible in the future. Does this guy even like baseball? Why would this be a good idea?

Having humans call balls/strikes is as important as having humans play the game.

Call me paranoid, but if my favorite team the A’s was playing New York in the ALCS, with the big money TV ratings for the World Series at stake, do you think I’d be trusting that someone wasn’t rigging the automated umpire to favor New York? You bet your ass I’d think that.

          1) If you want a laugh, find the front page of today’s New York Post. It has a picture of two people sitting in the Oval Office, after their discussion about prison reform. I’m not going to say anything else about it, other than you can find the picture on Twitter or the Post’s website.

Read the captions above the picture; classic New York Post stuff.

                    • LEADING OFF: Astros head home to face red-hot Red Sox
                      May 31, 2018

A look at what's happening around baseball today:

                      TEST OF THE CHAMPION

After wrapping up a series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, Jose Altuve and the World Series champion Astros return home to face another 2017 playoff opponent in Boston. Including a four-game series at Cleveland last weekend, that makes three straight foes for Houston that participated in last year's postseason. Lance McCullers Jr. (6-3, 3.98 ERA) starts the opener of a four-game set against Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz (1-2, 6.75 ERA).

                      BACK ON THE MOUND

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to return to the rotation at home against the Philadelphia Phillies. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner has been on the disabled list for nearly a month with left biceps tendinitis. He is 1-4 with a 2.86 ERA this season. Aaron Nola (6-2, 2.27 ERA) pitches for the Phillies.

                      BEASTS OF THE NL EAST

The Nationals and Braves, in a tight race with the Phillies for the top spot in the NL East, begin a four-game series in Atlanta. Tanner Roark (2-4, 3.17 ERA) starts for Washington against Atlanta's Sean Newcomb (5-1, 2.75 ERA).

                      `ROCK BOTTOM' IN QUEENS

Entering Wednesday night, the New York Mets have been reeling, and first-year manager Mickey Callaway is looking for a way out. Almost nothing has gone right since New York won its fourth straight game on May 21. The Mets are 16-25 since starting the season 11-1. Though the Mets did earn a split of their series in Atlanta with a 4-1 win on Wednesday. ''We've hit rock bottom the last few days and we have to come out of it,'' Callaway said before the game. New York has 11 players on the disabled list, including sluggers Yoenis Cespedes and Todd Frazier, reliever Anthony Swarzak and catcher Travis d'Arnaud.

                      STILL NOT MILLER TIME

Andrew Miller has been cleared to start a throwing program as the Indians' All-Star reliever battles inflammation in his right knee. Miller, who is on the disabled list for the third time in the past year because of soreness in his knee, visited a specialist in New York on Tuesday. The club said Dr. David Altchek confirmed a previous diagnosis and the left-hander can ''begin a gradual progression back to mound activity.'' While there is no timetable for Miller to return, the fact that he doesn't need surgery and can resume throwing is good news for the Indians.

                      • Attempt to remove goose from baseball stadium ends in chaos
                        May 31, 2018

DETROIT (AP) A Canada goose settled into right-center field during a rain delay at the Detroit Tigers game, and an attempt to remove it ended in chaos.

The grounds crew at Comerica Park in Detroit set off two firecrackers and another member gave chase Wednesday night. The bird tried to escape, but crashed into an LED board on the third deck and fell two levels into the stands.

Video of the goose's appearance was captured by Fox Sports Detroit.

After several moments, a veterinarian who was attending the game wrapped the stunned goose in a blanket and took it to the concourse, where it was released outside the stadium and dashed into nearby bushes.

After the rain delay, the Tigers went on to beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-1.

                        • Thursday's Best Bet

                          Thursday MLB Best Bet

                          Philadelphia Phillies vs L.A Dodgers

Tonight we get the return of the great Clayton Kershaw to the Dodgers rotation as he looks to be ready to go after a stint on the DL with an arm injury. 2018 has not gone well for the Dodgers ace as L.A was just 2-5 SU in Kershaw's seven starts prior to landing on the DL, and his 4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and 5.7 runs allowed on average during his last three outings are just not numbers you regularly see from Kershaw. Whether or not the issue with his arm is fully ready to go remains to be seen, but if L.A is going to continue to climb back to the top of the NL West standings, getting Kershaw right and racking up wins with him on the mound is a good place to start.

                          Philadelphia (+157), L.A Dodgers (-175); Total set at 6.5

L.A would grab a series victory (3-1) with a win tonight after guaranteeing themselves at least a split of this four-game set with a 8-2 win last night. Dodgers fans were glad to see their offense get rolling again after being held to just a single run the night before vs Jake Arrieta. L.A has now scored 4 or more runs in six of their last eight games overall and their 7-3 SU mark over their last 10 has them inching ever closer to that 1st place position in their division. Having Kershaw back in uniform is going to give this Dodgers team a huge spark, but I wouldn't be expecting him to be the best version of himself that we've seen in the past tonight.

For one, 2018 has already been a year full of struggles for Kershaw, and there is no certainty that his time on the DL enabled him to fix what may have been issues. Going on the DL with an arm injury isn't exactly ideal for a pitcher looking to regain his all-world form because simply throwing the ball becomes a task and there isn't much time for things other than healing in that regard.

Secondly, the first start off the DL for any MLB pitcher is always a tough spot to back them, let alone when they are laying the type of juice that Kershaw and the defending NL Champs are tonight. We all know just how good Kershaw can be when he's pitching well, but we have yet to see that at all in 2018, so how do we really trust it when he's coming off the DL in 2018? That's just not something I'm willing to do.

Now, looking at VegasInsider.com's betting percentage numbers, we do have about a 60/40 split in favor of L.A tonight and it's pushed the ML odds from the opener around -160 to it's current standing. That move alone is enough to give me pause on considering the Phillies ML here because oddsmakers clearly have gotten some L.A action that they respect, although if I was forced to pick a side tonight it would be Philly or nothing. Phillies starter Aaron Nola has been tremendous all year long and does have a bit of value at this current underdog price. Yet, it's the total of 6.5 I'm looking to attack as this number is built on Kershaw's years-long reputation rather than his 2018 results and I've got the true line coming in much closer to 7.5 rather than 6.5.

While Nola has been great all year for the Phillies, L.A's bats aren't showing signs of cooling off for a significant period, especially considering they are 3-0-2 O/U in their last five outings against a righty like Nola. The Dodgers are also 8-2-2 O/U in their last 12 against a winning team, so bringing out the bats and relying on their offense to do most of the heavy lifting to win games against quality foes is nothing new for L.A yet. They'd love to take the field trusting/knowing Kershaw is going to put up seven scoreless innings tonight, but that's simply not realistic.

Philadelphia's offense will do their part in getting this total to be surpassed tonight too, against a Kershaw that's looking to just find his health and some consistency. Coming off the arm injury that he is, I'm expecting Kershaw to be looking to pump the strikezone with fastballs more often than not tonight for fear of re-injuring himself, at least early on. Kershaw's motion can be so violent and jerky at times that injuries are nothing new for him, and with the goals L.A has again this year, the Dodgers would take a 100% healthy Kershaw in September/October over pushing a 80% healthy Kershaw out there in May and expecting him to be his dominant self. That just won't happen tonight in hi s first start back, and the more the Phillies can make him work hard for each out, the better off their offense will be.

Finally, we can't forget about the guy calling balls and strikes tonight in Will Little. Little has a 5-5 O/U record behind the dish this year, but the average runs per game he sees is 8.8 and that's more than enough for a total of 6.5. Throw in the 15.6 strikeouts he dishes out per game – which is 10th lowest of all MLB umpires this year – and we could even see these two studs on the hill get pinched a little bit with the strikezone. Given both offenses are already going to come to the plate with the mindset of being aggressive from the outset, forcing Nola and Kershaw to be even more around the center of the plate should only lead to more runs being scored.

But when a 3-3 game guarantees you a win on your 'over' ticket and you've got one guy – albeit Clayton Kershaw – making his first start off an injury, and another guy facing a lineup that's really starting to heat up, there really is nowhere else to look but the high side of this total.

                            • Nola, Phillies spoil Kershaw's return
                              June 1, 2018

LOS ANGELES (AP) Jorge Alfaro drove in two runs, Aaron Nola pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 Thursday, spoiling Clayton Kershaw's first start in almost a month.

Hitting out of the No. 8 spot in the Phillies' lineup, Alfaro delivered an RBI single in the second inning against Kershaw and had an RBI double off reliever Josh Fields in the seventh.

Nola (7-2) struck out seven, including five of the last seven batters he faced. He walked one and allowed just two runners to reach as far as second base. Seranthony Dominguez held the Dodgers scoreless over the final two innings for his second save.

Kershaw pitched in his first game since May 1, spending time on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis. He gave up one run and four hits over five innings, throwing 62 pitches. He had five strikeouts and a walk.

Alfaro, who had an RBI single in the second, broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning when he doubled to the wall in right-center field off Fields (2-2). He was thrown out at third base trying to extend the hit to a triple.

                              ASTROS 4, RED SOX 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Correa snapped an 0-for-10 slump with a two-run homer in the first and Tony Kemp and Jake Marisnick had an RBI each to help Houston beat Boston.

Lance McCullers (7-3) allowed four hits and two runs in six innings to help the Astros win this rematch of last year's ALDS, which Houston won in four games.

Ken Giles gave up a single to Sandy Leon with two outs in the ninth before walking Jackie Bradley Jr., but Marisnick grabbed a fly ball hit by Blake Swihart to end it and give Giles his 10th save.

Boston's Drew Pomeranz (1-4) allowed six hits and four runs in five innings after failing to pitch longer than four innings in his past three starts. The Red Sox, playing without Mookie Betts (soreness in left side) for fifth straight game as well as Dustin Pedroia, snapped a three-game winning streak.

                              BRAVES 4, NATIONALS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Sean Newcomb pitched seven strong innings for his sixth straight win, leading Atlanta back into first place in the NL East.

The Braves snapped Washington's six-game winning streak and reclaimed first place by a half-game over the Nationals.

Newcomb (6-1) was roughed up by the Nationals in his season debut April 2. Since then, he's 6-0 with a sparkling 2.16 ERA in 10 starts.

Anthony Rendon drove in in both Washington runs with a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single in the third. Newcomb was dominant the rest of the way , retiring 14 of 15 hitters before he was lifted for a pinch hitter after a 1-2-3 seventh. He threw 93 pitches - 61 for strikes.

The Braves went ahead for good in the bottom of the third off Tanner Roark (2-5).

Arodys Vizcaino got the last three outs for his 10th save in 12 chances.

                              TIGERS 6, ANGELS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Victor Reyes hit a three-run triple in the five-run first to lead Detroit.

Tigers starter Ryan Carpenter was on pace to pick up his first career victory, but left the game after four innings with an oblique strain.

Warwick Saupold (3-1) replaced Carpenter and pitched two perfect innings. Carpenter gave up one run and five hits.

Andrew Heaney (2-4) allowed five runs and eight hits over five innings. He had given up a total of six runs over his previous six starts.

                              CARDINALS 10, PIRATES 8

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Yairo Munoz hit a three-run, game-ending homer to cap St. Louis' five-run ninth inning .

Munoz ripped the first pitch from closer Felipe Vazquez (2-2) over the wall in center field to give St. Louis its sixth walk-off win of the season.

Francisco Cervelli hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth to give the Pirates an 8-5 lead. However, Pittsburgh couldn't hold on and lost in St. Louis for the fifth straight time and 12th in the last 14.

Josh Bell also homered for the Pirates

Mike Mayers (2-0) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

                              INDIANS 9, TWINS 8

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Francisco Lindor's second home run of the game snapped an eighth-inning tie after Minnesota erased an eight-run deficit, and Cleveland held on for the win.

Lindor also hit two doubles and drove in four runs for the Indians, who stretched their winning streak to a season-best six straight games despite another wobbly performance by their bullpen until Cody Allen finished by getting the final four outs - his ninth save in 10 opportunities.

Tyler Olson (1-1) got the last two outs of the eighth.

In the next inning, Lindor straightened the Indians out with his one-out drive off Addison Reed (1-4). The star shortstop became the first player in the major leagues since Adrian Beltre for Seattle in 2007 to hit two doubles and two homers in two different games in one season.

The Twins lost for the seventh time in their last eight games.ATHLETICS 7, RAYS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Daniel Mengden allowed three runs over eight innings and Oakland avoided a four-game sweep.

Matt Olson, Matt Chapman and Matt Joyce all homered, providing some much-needed punch to an offense that had sputtered since their leading home-run hitter Khris Davis went on the disabled list 10 days earlier.

Davis was activated before the game and doubled and scored as part of a three-run second inning to help Oakland end a three-game losing streak.

Joey Wendle had three hits for Tampa Bay.

Mengden (6-4) gave up six hits, struck out five and extended his scoreless streak to a career-high 25 innings before giving a two-run double to Wilson Ramos in the ninth. Blake Treinen got the last out for his 13th save.

Ryne Stanek (1-1) started for Tampa Bay and retired four batters in his second major league start.

                              CUBS 5, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Jose Quintana pitched six shutout innings, Ben Zobrist hit a two-run homer and Chicago won the opener of a four-game series.

Zobrist also doubled and singled in the leadoff spot as the Cubs won for the fourth time in five games. Chicago improved to 2-8 at Citi Field since the 2015 NL Championship Series.

An inconsistent Quintana (6-4) continued his run of strong starts following poor ones. The left-hander allowed three hits and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third when he threw a called third strike past Jose Bautista and retired cleanup man Michael Conforto on a grounder.

Quintana struck out six and walked two on a foggy, misty night in Queens. Brandon Morrow, the fourth Chicago reliever, needed only two pitches to earn his 13th save.

Brandon Nimmo hit his career-high sixth home run in the eighth for the Mets, off Brian Duensing.

The Mets have lost eight of 11 since a four-game winning streak.

Zobrist went deep against Hansel Robles (2-2) with two outs in the fifth.

                              PADRES 8, MARLINS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Christian Villanueva hit his 15th home run, Jordan Lyles pitched seven solid innings and San Diego won its third straight.

Villanueva's homer total before June 1 is the most by a National League rookie since St. Louis' Albert Pujols hit 16 in 2001. His power surge has helped the Padres win four of their last six games.

After taking a perfect game into the eighth inning in his last start at Petco Park, Lyles (2-1) wasn't as dominant against the Marlins. But he limited them to two runs and six hits while walking one and striking out seven in his fifth start after 13 appearances out of the bullpen.

Brad Hand got the last out with the bases loaded for his 17th save after.

Derek Dietrich homered off Kirby Yates in the eighth for Miami.

Wei-Yin Chen (1-3) got just five outs in his shortest stint of the season. He allowed four runs and four hits, and walked two and struck out four.
