  • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    — Going into Sunday’s games, big league pitchers were batting .112 this season

    — Texas Tech beat Florida, Arkansas beat Texas in the College World Series.

    — Astros went 10-0 on a 3-city road trip to Texas, Oakland, Kansas City.

    — Bryce Harper is a free agent this winter; he is hitting .217 right now. Not good.

    — Oakland A’s are 36-36 with 90 games left and I’m OK with that.

    — If the baseball playoffs started today:
AL: New York-Cleveland-Houston. Wild Cards: Boston-Seattle
    NL: Atlanta-Milwaukee-Arizona. Wild Cards: Chicago-Washington

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

    13) Brooks Koepka is first guy since Curtis Strange in 1988-89 to win the US Open two years in a row; he has only one other Tour win, the 2015 Phoenix Open.

    12) Rangers 13, Rockies 12— Horrendous pitching in this game; Colorado closer Davis walked four guys in 0.1 IP, then gave up the game-winning single to a 3rd-string catcher as Texas scored four times in the ninth inning for the comeback win.

    11) Single-season record for most home runs by a team is 264, set by the 1997 Mariners. That record could easily fall this year.

    10) Rookie QB Chris Streveler started for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this week; he is the first rookie QB straight out of college to start a Week 1 CFL game since 1994, when Anthony Calvillo did it in 1994, playing for the Las Vegas Posse.

Yes, for a while in the 90’s, the CFL had teams in America; I think Baltimore won a CFL title.

Calvillo is now a CFL Hall of Famer.

    9) Read on the Interweb this week that the country of Iceland has roughly the same amount of people as Santa Ana, CA.

Only thing I know about Iceland is that when Bobby Fischer played Boris Spassky for the world chess championship in the early 70’s, it was held in Iceland, in a town called Reykjavík, and I had to look up that spelling. Long way to go to play chess.

    8) Giancarlo Stanton’s OPS in his nine-year career:
    2010: .833, 2011: .893, 2012: .969, 2013: .845, 2014: .950, 2015: .952

    Then the last three years: 2016: .815, 2017: 1.005, 2018: .798

He used to get hurt a lot, now he just seems unsure at the plate; too much film study?

    7) Keith Hernandez was saying on TV last week that if he was still playing, he couldn’t do the all the film work that modern players do, as far as studying pitchers. Ron Darling came out and said that if a player now doesn’t want to do it, he is viewed as a malcontent by the team.

    6) Giants 4, Dodgers 1— Giants scored five runs in their first six games at Dodger Stadium this season, but salvaged the last game of this series.

    5) Kelly Johnson is the only ballplayer who played for all five AL East teams.

    4) Go to Deadspin’s Twitter account and find the GIF of the fan at the Montreal-BC Lions CFL game Saturday who ran on the field during the game. A defensive back on the Lions absolutely crushed the guy, laid him out. I’m sure when he sobered up, it hurt like hell.

    3) In top of 8th inning in Milwaukee Sunday, a Brewers reliever named Adrian Houser was puking his guts out behind the mound. Somehow, he finished the inning. He looked like Jamie Foxx in Any Given Sunday, when the backup QB barfed on the field before he started to play.

    2) Most greeting cards sold, by holiday:
    1) Christmas 2) Valentine’s Day 3) Mother’s Day 4) Father’s Day

    1) NBA Draft is Thursday, so that’ll be in the news a lot. Most interesting player in the draft is probably Slovenian Luka Doncic. He is a 19-year old wing who played for Real Madrid in the EuroLeague this past season. ESPN’s Seth Greenberg tweeted Sunday that he is a better passer than Lonzo Ball, as well as a better shooter .

His description of Doncic: “ a bigger Lonzo Ball with jumper, a better feel for reading ballscreens and the toughness of a grown man.”

              Streaky Teams (entering Monday)

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Baltimore 1-9 past 10 games overall Chicago Cubs Under 9-4 past 13 games
Colorado 4-12 past 16 games overall Chicago White Sox Under 14-1-1 past 16 games
Detroit 5-0 past five games overall Cincinnati Under 5-1 past six games
Houston 11-0 past 11 games overall Colorado Over 14-2-1 past 17 games
Kansas City 1-12 past 13 games overall Philadelphia Over 7-2 past nine games

              South Side of the Total
The Chicago White Sox are on quite the 'under' streak lately, going 14-1-1 in the past 16 games against the total. They suffered a 3-1 loss against the Tigers on Sunday, and they have averaged just 2.7 runs per game across the past 10 outings. Chicago's pitching has stepped up lately, as they have yielded just 3.2 runs per outing. That's going to help the 'under' come in quite frequently. Their Windy City brethren, the Cubs, have also had the 'under' hit quite frequently lately. Outside of a 13-run explosion in the series-opening win on Friday, the under is 7-3 across the past 10 outings. The Cubs have been shut out three times in the past five outings, and they have scored three or fewer goals in five of their past 13 outings.

              Chat Room
The Chicago Cubs will roll out RHP Tyler Chatwood against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. He hasn't faced L.A. this season, but he is very familiar with the Dodgers from his time with the Colorado Rockies. Chatwood is 2-5 with a 4.82 ERA over seven starts and one relief appearances against Los Angeles since the start of the 2015 season with 34 strikeouts and 27 walks over 37 1/3 innings while the Dodgers are hitting .250 against him during the span. It won't be easy for Chatwood to turn things around against L.A., as RHP Kenta Maeda is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in four starts and a relief appearance on the road this season.

              Looking Ahead

              Monday, June 18

As mentioned above, the Dodgers and Cubs will battle on Monday night at Wrigley Field. The Dodgers roll into the game with a 10-1 record over their past 11 road games against a team with a winning record while going 9-1 in their past 10 road games overall. They have also been starting series very hot lately, going 7-0 in their past seven series openers. L.A. is also an impressive 17-5 in the past 22 against teams with a winning overall mark, as they look to turn things around after a slow start to the season. The Dodgers are also Maeda's past seven against NL Central foes. The Cubs are looking for revenge against the Dodgers for a loss in the National League Championship Series last season. While Chatwood has struggled against the Dodgers in recent seasons, the Cubs are 4-1 in his past five home outings while goling 14-6 in their past 20 games overall. The Dodgers have dominated, going 7-1 in the past eight meetings between these sides, while the 'under' is 14-3 in the past 17 meetings at Wrigley Field.

The Pirates and Brewers renew their National League Central rivalry on Monday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Brewers have been getting very good results from veteran Jhoulys Chacin lately, going 10-1 over his past 11 starts, including 5-1 over his past six road contests. They're also an impressive 4-0 in his past four against divisional foes, while going 5-0 in the past five road outings against teams with a losing record. The Bucs have struggled, going 9-19 over his past 28 voerall while posting a 2-6 record in the past eight against teams with a winning record. The Pirates counter with Trevor Williams, and the Bucs are just 1-4 in his past five outings, 2-5 in his past seven at home against teams with a winning mark and 1-5 in his past six against winning teams overall.

              Weather Report
The weather is expected to hold off in the Steel City for the series opener between the Brewers and Pirates, but thw winds will be kicking up 10-13 mph blowing out from home plate to left field. Across the Keystone State in Philadelphia the Cardinals and Phillies will be locking horns. The precipitation will also be nil, but winds will be blowing out from 10-13 mph from home plate to straightaway center field at Citizens Bank Park.

In Cleveland, the tarpaulin is likely to come out at Progressive Field, as there is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms at first pitch, increasing to 70 percent by 9pm through midnight. If they are able to squeeze the game in, the winds will be howling from 10-13 mph from home plate to right field.

In Chicago there is a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms, dying down to 30 percent or less by 9pm CDT. The winds will be blowing in from left field to first base, knocking down any fly balls.

In Kansas City, it will be a hot wind from 11-14 mph blowing balls out of Kauffman Stadium from home plate to left field. It will be much cooler at Coors Field for the Mets-Rockies battle, with thunderstorm chances of 40 percent from 8pm MDT through the wee hours.

Lastly, but certainly not least, the Marlins and Giants will be dealing with winds from home plate to the left-center field power alleys from 13-16 mph. The 'over' is 5-1 in the past six meetings between Miami and San Francisco, and 7-2 in the past nine battles altogether. It will be a battle of lefties, and the over is 6-2 in Miami's past eight on the road vs. LHP, while the over is 5-2 in San Francisco's past seven at home vs. LHP.

              Tuesday, June 19
The Orioles and Nationals will renew acquaintances in their interleague rivalry on Tuesday night. Baltimore has struggled all across the board, but they're particularly poor lately in interleague games. They're 0-9 in their past nine interleague games against teams with a winning record, 0-5 in their past five interleague road outings against a team with a winning mark and 2-7 in their past nine interleague road assignments overall. Washington hasn't fared well in interleague games lately, either, going 1-4 in their past five heading into Monday's continuation of a game against the Nationals. However, Washington has taken advantage when playing the dregs of the league, going 48-23 in the past 71 games against teams with a winning percentage under .400. Washington has won five straight meetings against Baltimore, while going 'under' has hit in four in a row.

The Athletics and Padres will do battle in interleague play, as the A's look to hang around in the playoff chase. They enter the new week at 36-36, while the Padres are six games under .500 at 34-40. Oakland has stumbled in series openers, going 2-6 in their past eight Game 1s of a new series. They're also just 7-16 in their past 23 interleague games against a team with a losing record. San Diego has won four of their past five at home, but they're just 1-5 in their past six against the American League west, while winning just once in the past six interleague battles. Oakland has rattled off five wins in the past six trips to Petco Park, while going 8-3 in the past 11 meetings overall. Total bettors will like the fact the 'over' is 6-1 in the past seven at Petco, and 9-3 in the past 12 meetings overall.

              Weather Report
The weather looks pretty good for most of the country outside of the Midwest. In Cincinnati, the Tigers and Reds will be looking at 40 percent chances of thunderstorms from 8-10pm ET. The same holds true for the Dodgers and Cubs at Wrigley Field, with 50 percent chances of storms dying down to 40 percent by 9pm CDT. If and when they do start, those west-southwest winds will be blowing in from left field to home plate again from 9-12 mph.

The winds will be gusting again in Kansas City, blowing 12-15 mph with temperatures flirting with the 100-degree mark. No precip in San Francisco, either, but the Marlins-Giants will again experience gusts from 14-17 mph to the left-center field power alleys.

              • Angels host D-backs
                June 18, 2018

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Angels

The Arizona Diamondbacks begin a 10-game road trip on Monday night, as they visit the Los Angeles Angels on ESPN. The Diamondbacks are just in front of the Dodgers in the NL West, while the Angels are well back of the Astros and Mariners in the AL West. The Diamondbacks have held their own on the road this season as they are 16-16, while the Angels have a losing record at home.

The probable pitching matchup for Monday has Zack Greinke going against Jaime Barria. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Angels
Date and Time: Monday, June 18, 2018, 10:07 p.m. ET
Location: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, CA
                MLB Odds: Angels -121, O/U 7.5 under
Probable Pitchers: Zack Greinke vs. Jaime Barria
                TV Coverage: ESPN

The Diamondbacks and Angels have similar records, but because the Angels play in the AL West, they are in third place, while the Diamondbacks lead the NL West. It is already looking like it could be another season of missing the playoffs for Mike Trout and the Angels and another massive failure for the most overrated manager in the game, Mike Scioscia. Part of the problem for the Angels is that they have a losing record at home. They are 17-18 at home, with 15 games going over the total, 18 going under, with two pushes. They are scoring 4.5 runs per game and giving up 3.7 per contest.

The Diamondbacks are 16-16 on the road, with 19 games going over, and 13 going under the total. They are averaging about 4.4 runs per game and giving up about 3.5 runs per contest.

                Starting Pitchers

Greinke has not lived up to the reputation of a staff ace this season. He is 5-5 with a 3.87 ERA. He allowed five earned runs in 4.2 innings last time out against the Pirates. He is 2-1 with a 4.76 ERA in his last three starts. Greinke has not faced the Angels since 2015 when he was pitching as a member of the Dodgers.

Barria is 5-2 on the season with a 2.61 ERA. He is in the spot of Shohei Otani in the Los Angeles roatation. Barria gave up three runs, two earned, last time out in five innings against the Mariners. He has actually been really solid in his starts, as he has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his eight career starts.

                Key Stats

The Diamondbacks are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings against the Angels. The Diamondbacks are 6-1 in their last 7 series openers. The Diamondbacks are 4-1 in their last 5 road games. The Diamondbacks are 2-7 in their last 9 Interleague road games. The Diamondbacks are 2-5 in Greinke’s last 7 road starts. The Angels are 5-0 in their last 5 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Angels are 13-5 in their last 18 Interleague home games.

Looking at the total, the Under is 5-1 in the Diamondbacks last 6 Interleague games. The Under is 4-0 in Greinke’s last 4 starts vs. the American League West. The Under is 9-1-2 in the Angels last 12 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Los Angeles.

                Diamondbacks vs. Angels Picks

This could actually be a very good pitching matchup. Greinke should be focused to pitch against his former team, while Barria has been solid nearly every time out. The Diamondbacks have been going over the total on the road, but you have to take into account that the last three road games were in Colorado. The last time the Diamondbacks played an Interleague series on the road, they went under in two of three in Oakland.

The Angels pitching has faltered lately, so they have been going over more at home than they did earlier in the season, but Barria has been a reliable starter. I think there is some value in taking Monday night’s game under the total.

Diamondbacks vs. Angels Pick: Under the total
Diamondbacks vs. Angels Score Prediction: Angels 3, Diamondbacks 2

Arizona Diamondbacks At Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Arizona Diamondbacks have shaken off a recent slump and are back atop the National League West. The Dodgers are right on their tails so the D-Backs must continue to play well. They have a tough matchup next time this week as they hit the road for a matchup against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Angels are above .500 and aiming to keep within striking distance of the Astros and Mariners in the American League West. This is an important matchup for both sides in MLB betting lines.

The MLB Baseball contest will be held at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The game will take place on Monday, June 18th, 2018, at 10 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                  Odds Analysis

The oddsmakers have pegged this one as a pick ‘em, as the D-Backs and Angels are both listed at -105 to win this contest on the moneyline. The Angels are getting 59 percent of the action.

The Diamondbacks and are being wagered on at +148 to cover the 1.5-run spread, while the Angels are the -170 favorites to lose by one run or win the game.

The scoring total is listed at eight runs, with the “over” the more popular choice in MLB gambling.

                  Probable Pitchers

The Diamondbacks are scheduled to send star right-hander Zack Greinke to the mound. He is 5-5 on the season with with a 3.87 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. Greinke is striking out more than a batter per inning and will be a handful for the Angels’ lineup if his stuff is sharp.

The Angels will counter with young right-hander Jaime Barria. He is 5-2 on the season with a sparkling 2.61 ERA. Barria is only 21 years old and doesn’t have a lot of experience under his belt, but the early returns are good. Barria has done a nice job limiting walks and if he can avoid putting D-Backs on the bases he should be in good shape.

                  Player To Watch

Paul Goldschmidt -- The Diamondbacks’ star first baseman got off to a really slow start this season but is red hot right now. He was hitting below .200 in late May but is now back to slugging the ball. Goldschmidt is hitting .267 with 14 home runs, 35 RBIs and an .880 OPS on the season.
The Angels will have to be very wary of him, but the lineup is pretty strong around Goldschmidt as well, so Barria will want to avoid walking him. The D-Backs are much better when Goldschmidt is raking and he is in the middle of a red-hot streak currently.

                  Free MLB ATS Picks

The Angels are at home and have the best player in the major leagues in Mike Trout, so they have to feel good about their chances. Star shortstop Andrelton Simmons has returned to the lineup after injury and that’s a big boost.

The Diamondbacks have been decent on the road this season, and even though Barria has good numbers, he doesn’t have the track record of a player like Greinke. When the talent is so even such as a game like this, it’s smart to go with the top-flight pitcher.

The Diamondbacks are in a nice groove and they are the choice to come away with a key victory in front of a nationally televised audience in MLB betting. This one should be a pitcher’s duel and the “under” is the pick on the scoring total.

BEST BET: Arizona Diamondbacks 4, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3

                      Monday MLB Best Bet
New York Mets vs. Colorado Rockies

A new week brings new matchups in MLB for the betting market to dissect and one of those is the start of a four-game set between the Mets and Rockies out at Coors Field. Considering Coors Field is no stranger to allowing plenty of HR's and the Mets are a HR-heavy team this year, we could see our fair share of runs in this series over the next four days.

But to start, it's the New York Mets coming in as slight road chalk with Jacob deGrom on the hill as they appear to be catching Colorado at a good time.

New York (-122) vs Colorado (+112); Total set at 9.5

Colorado comes into tonight's game as losers of eight of 10 overall and that's because they choked away a 3-run lead in the bottom of the 9th yesterday. The 13-12 loss in Texas after giving up four runs in the 9th has to have left a bit of a lasting mark on the psyche of these Rockies players entering this series and how they react to that result will be interesting to see.

The majority of bettors are already of the mindset that a loss like that has likely shattered what little confidence the Rockies have right now as about 80% of the ML bets have already come in on the Mets, as it probably doesn't hurt New York's cause that Jacob deGrom is on the hill either.

Jacob deGrom has been a stud for this floundering Mets team all year with his MLB -leading 1.55 ERA through 14 starts and with much of the MLB betting market still weighing the bulk of their handicapping methods on starting pitching matchups alone, a league-leader like deGrom is always going to receive plenty of support.

Yet, getting plenty of support from his teammates is not something deGrom has been privy of late. The Mets have averaged 0.7 runs per game in deGrom's last three outings, and despite a 1.64 ERA by deGrom in those starts, New York lost all three of them. In fact, a similar story has been on repeat for deGrom and New York in all of his starts this year as the Mets are just 5-9 SU in his 14 starts overall.

To continually go out and waste quality outings from one of your top starters is how a team ends up eight games under the .500 mark in mid-June, and it's why that even though there looks like there is plenty of value on the MLB ERA leader at -122 tonight, backing the Mets may not be the best idea.

Colorado is in a slump no question, but they already swept this Mets team up in New York at the beginning of May, and while they didn't face deGrom in that series, beating Syndergaard, Matz, and Wheeler is quite impressive. Furthermore, while Colorado may have dropped eight of their last 10 games, if you shrink those results down to a more recent number of their past five games, they are just 2-3 SU. That includes blowing the game last night which is a little problematic, but there are plenty of positives to take from that loss.

For one, it was the third time in five games that the Rockies offense put up 7 or more runs in a game, and it was the only one of those three that they ended up losing. In this day and age it's completely “normal” for bullpens/closers to have a bad night and that's really all it was yesterday in Texas.

The Rockies lead for basically the entire game yesterday – there were only trailing at the start of the 7th inning after Texas took a 6-5 lead that didn't last through the Top of the 7th – and six of their first seven guys in the batting order finished the day with multiple hits. Knocking around deGrom is going to be a bit tougher tonight, but since deGrom has been in the league he's only pitched once at Coors Field (2016) and it was the Rockies who came out with a victory that day.

Furthermore, unlike the lack of support deGrom gets from his lineup, the Rockies have no problem supporting their starter tonight, Tyler Anderson. Colorado has put up an average of 5.1 runs per game in Anderson's 14 starts this year, and that number gets bumped up to 6.7/game over his last three outings.

Get a quality start from Anderson and a win will likely follow as he's got a 4-1 SU record this year, but even an average start may do as Colorado is 7-7 SU in his 14 starts overall.

Simply put, I'm don't think I can pass up backing this Rockies team as home underdogs tonight because even with deGrom on the hill I'm not sure the Mets deserve to be road favorites here. No matter how good a year a starter is having, anyone can get shelled at Coors Field and deGrom definitely isn't an exception.

Colorado has the better record, are 5-1 SU last six games at home vs this Mets franchise, and are the minority side of things in terms of betting support this evening. Add it all up and I believe that streak of deGrom and the Mets losing in his starts continues tonight.

                      Best Bet: Colorado +112

                        Monday, June 18

                        Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                        Streaking:
Dylan Covey, Chicago White Sox (3-1, 2.29 ERA, $522)

The continual rebuild for the White Sox has been filled with disappointments, but Dylan Covey has blossomed from a has been prospect to a productive major league pitcher. In his last three outings, Covey is 2-0 (3-0 team win-loss) with an ERA of 1.00. Included in that stretch is six innings of shutout ball at Fenway - an impressive feat in 2018.

Covey takes to the hill as the White Sox take on The Indians at Progressive Field. The White Sox are currently huge +248 underdogs.

                        Slumping:
Bartolo Colon, Texas Rangers (3-4, 3.90 ERA, $251)

Everyone's favourite PED user is slowly walking to the mound at Kauffman Stadium tonight for the Texas Rangers. 'Big Sexy' Bartolo Colon is still getting paid to be a starting pitcher in the majors and wow is he stealing money.

In June, Colon is sporting a 12.71 ERA in three starts and only thrown 11.1 innings. The scary stat is he's only struck out eight batters and allowed 6 home runs during this stretch.

Colon will look to use a time machine as he and the Rangers visit the Royals tonight. The Rangers can be found as -106 road chalk.

                          • Bregman's double runs Astros' winning streak to 12
                            June 19, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Alex Bregman hit a game-ending two-run double with one out in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 Monday night to match a franchise record with their 12th straight win.

Houston trailed 4-0 after three innings but cut the lead to one entering the ninth.

Sergio Romo (1-2) walked Marwin Gonzalez to start the ninth, then allowed a single to Max Stassi. Tony Kemp's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, and Houston loaded the bases when George Springer reached on interference by catcher Wilson Ramos.

Bregman then drove a ball that bounced off the wall in left-center. He lifted both arms as he trotted into second base, and teammates mobbed him in the infield.

Collin McHugh (2-0) struck out two in a scoreless ninth for the win on a night Gerrit Cole walked a career-high five to help the Rays build the early lead.

Houston also won 12 straight in 2004 and 1999. The Astros will go for No. 13 on Tuesday with ace Justin Verlander on the mound.

                            NATIONALS 5, YANKEES 3, 1ST GAME

                            YANKEES 4, NATIONALS 2, 2ND GAME

WASHINGTON (AP) - Aaron Hicks' go-ahead two-run homer sparked chants of ''Let's go, Yankees!'' on the road and helped New York beat Washington in the second game of an unusual semi-doubleheader, after pinch-hitter Juan Soto's tiebreaking two-run shot for the Nationals won the opener.

These games originally were scheduled more than a month ago, and Game 1 resumed after being suspended because of rain in the middle of the sixth - so technically, Soto managed to homer in a game played before he made his major league debut.

                            Huh?

The 19-year-old Soto was called up from the minors for the first time five days after Game 1 started on May 15; it picked back up at 3-all and the Nationals about to bat in the bottom of the sixth. After Bryce Harper - who had a full beard back on May 15, when the game began, but was clean-shaven this time - struck out, and Anthony Rendon singled, Soto drove a 97 mph fastball from Chad Green (4-1) to the back of the second deck in right field.

                            RANGERS 6, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Bartolo Colon earned his 244th win, passing Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for the most by a pitcher born in the Dominican Republic, and Texas beat skidding Kansas City.

Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer for the Rangers, who won their third straight game. The 45-year-old Colon (4-4) allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings to break a tie with Marichal on the career wins chart.

Only right-hander Dennis Martinez has more victories among pitchers from Latin America. Martinez, a native of Nicaragua, won 245 games in the majors.

Ian Kennedy (1-7) is 1-13 in his last 28 home starts. The Royals have lost seven straight and 13 of 14. They've dropped 27 of 37 games at Kauffman Stadium, the worst home record in the majors. Kansas City is 2-14 in June, having been outscored 95-35.

                            INDIANS 6, WHITE SOX 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trevor Bauer shut out Chicago for seven innings before a rain delay ended his night, and Jason Kipnis homered to lead Cleveland over the sliding and sloppy White Sox.

Bauer (6-5) allowed just three hits, struck out eight and was in line to potentially pitch his first shutout. However, the game was halted by rain in the seventh inning for 35 minutes, and manager Terry Francona pulled the right-hander following the delay and 100 pitches.

Roberto Perez drove in two runs off Dylan Covey (3-2) as Cleveland improved to 15-4 in its last 19 home games against Chicago.

The White Sox committed three errors - one by Covey - in the first three innings, lost their fifth straight and dropped a season-high 23 games under .500.

                            METS 12, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Brandon Nimmo homered twice during a huge night at the plate, including an inside-the-park shot to begin the game, and New York finally gave Jacob deGrom some run support in a victory over.

Wilmer Flores and Devin Mesoraco also went deep for New York, which won its their third straight. Nimmo had four hits and set a career high with four RBIs - one night after his go-ahead, two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning staved off defeat for the Mets and rallied them to a win at Arizona.

After pitching in terrible luck for weeks as New York's hitters slumped, deGrom (5-2) got some help at last. He allowed two runs - one earned - in eight innings to snap a two-game skid and win for the first time in six starts since May 18 against the Diamondbacks.

One day before his 30th birthday, the right-hander struck out seven and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.51. The 12 runs New York scored Monday were more than the team managed in his previous eight starts combined.

                            PHILLIES 6, CARDINALS 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Left fielder Marcell Ozuna dived for and missed Aaron Altherr's two-run double with two outs in the 10th inning, allowing Philadelphia to rally past St. Louis.

Tommy Pham hit a solo homer in the top of the 10th, one inning after a wild pitch on a strikeout kept the game going. But the Phillies rallied.

Rhys Hoskins hit a bloop single to start the bottom of the 10th off Matt Bowman (0-2). Odubel Herrera dived headfirst into first to seemingly beat out an infield single, but the play was overturned by a video review. After Carlos Santana was intentionally walked, Bowman struck out Jesmuel Valentin.

Altherr then hit a sinking liner that appeared to skip off Ozuna's glove before bouncing to the wall.

                            PIRATES 1, BREWERS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Trevor Williams pitched one-hit ball over seven innings and two Pittsburgh relievers closed out a two-hitter against Milwaukee.

Williams (6-4) struck out seven and walked two for his first victory in a month. Jordy Mercer drove in the lone run with a seventh-inning double, and the Pirates won for the fourth time in five games.

The Brewers entered the day leading the NL Central but suffered their third straight loss.

The only hit off Williams was a single by Jonathan Villar with two outs in the fifth. The hit followed a walk to Hernan Perez, and the duo executed a double steal before Erik Kratz struck out to end the inning.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                                13) Some odd baseball trivia yesterday, in Washington DC.

On May 15, New York-Washington had a game suspended in the 6th inning; it was finished Monday. On May 20, Nationals’ rookie Juan Soto made his MLB debut.

So Monday, in the completion of the suspended May 15 game, Soto homered, making him a player who homered in a game that was started five days before his MLB debut. Go figure.

                                12) Soto is really good, by the way; he is hitting .316 in his first 79 at-bats as a rookie.

                                11) Nationals acquired closer Kelvin Herrera from the Royals Monday for three minor leaguers, one of whom is a 24-year old who hasn’t even made AA ball yet.

                                10) Washington Capitals won their first Stanley Cup in their 45-year history this season, so of course, their coach quit Monday.

In four seasons under Barry Trotz, the Capitals were 205-89-34, the best record in the NHL. A two-year contract extension that had been negotiated previously was on the table if they won the Cup, but it was only a $300K raise per year and Trotz wanted the pot sweetened- obviously it was not. Everyone loses here.

I’m guessing Trotz wil be a hot commodity in the coaching free agent derby. Right now, the only NHL team without a head coach is the New York Islanders.

                                9) Keith Hernandez on TV in the 4th inning of the Mets-Rockies game last night: “I’ve never seen so much in-game coaching in my life.”

He didn’t seem real happy about it, but players get to the major leagues faster now than they used to and they still need coaching when they get there.

                                8) Nevada Wolf Pack hired Michael Musselman, the son of Nevada basketball coach Eric Musselman, as a graduate assistant.

Eric Musselman: “I’m really excited to add Michael to our coaching staff. He will provide high energy and a great work ethic to our coaching staff. I was very fortunate to work for my father at a young age and the opportunity to work with my son is something that is very special.”

Eric Mussselman’s dad Bill was coach at U of Minnesota and also in the NBA.

                                7) Pirates and Mariners have both won four 1-0 games this year, most in major leagues.

There were 29 games last year that ended 1-0; so far this year, there have been 30.

                                6) Pretty serious upgrade for the Carolina Panthers, going from Mike Shula to Norv Turner at offensive coordinator. Panthers will be an interesting team to follow this fall. Turner has a great reputation as an offensive guru; how will he mesh with Cam Newton?

                                5) Unintended consequence of the immigration crackdown: “Avocado farmers in Santa Barbara County, (CA) are currently struggling to find workers.”

So if the price of avocados goes way up, you know who to blame…….

                                4) There are two guys in professional baseball named Josh Smith; they both pitch for the Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston’s AAA farm club.

On Saturday, one of the Josh Smiths started for the Sox; on Sunday, the other one did.

                                3) Red Sox are 13-1 in Eduardo Rodriguez’ starts this season.

                                2) Cleveland Cavaliers dumped two of their assistant coaches; read into that what you will.

                                1) Umpire Tony Randazzo is a tough guy; he took a foul tip off the knuckles on his left hand last night, then took another foul ball off his collarbone. Both direct hits- they had to hurt like hell, but he stayed in the game. Tough.
