    • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
      Kevin Rogers

      Hottest team:
      Astros (12-1 last 13)

In spite of Houston having its 12-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday by Tampa Bay, the Astros are still the hottest squad in the game. Houston was listed as a favorite of at least -200 for the fifth straight game but couldn’t produce enough offense in a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday, while scoring below four runs for the first time in 13 games. The Astros also saw their eight-game OVER streak come to an end as Justin Verlander was denied his 10th win of the season.

Houston still has an opportunity to post another lengthy winning streak when it concludes its series with Tampa Bay, followed by home series against Kansas City and Toronto. Charlie Morton heads to the mound in Wednesday’s rubber match, seeking his ninth win of the season for Houston. The right-hander is coming off a 7-3 road victory over Kansas City his last time out, as the Astros own a 4-1 mark when Morton takes the mound as a favorite of -200 or higher.

      Coldest team:
      Royals (0-8 last eight)

Kansas City is riding an eight-game losing streak following Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to Texas. What’s even more amazing is that seven of those defeats have come at home, including four to last-place squads like the Rangers and Reds. If it wasn’t for Baltimore’s disastrous campaign at 20-51, Kansas City would own the worst record in baseball, as the Royals have been outscored on this homestand, 46-14.

The Royals look to avoid another home sweep as Jakob Junis heads to the hill against the Rangers. Junis hasn’t won a start in his last four appearances, while getting lit up in his past two outings against Oakland and Houston by allowing 12 earned runs and 17 hits in 10.2 innings of work. To make matters worse, Kansas City has compiled a dreadful 3-16 record in Game 3’s this season, including a 1-11 mark off a loss.

      Hottest pitcher:
Brent Suter, Brewers (7-4, 4.30 ERA)

Milwaukee snapped a three-game skid on Tuesday by holding off Pittsburgh, 3-2. Suter has been on fire over the last month as the Brewers have won five of his previous six starts, while coming off back-to-back blowouts of the Phillies. Suter delivered a season-high seven innings and allowed one run in a 13-2 home rout of Philadelphia last Friday, but it was only the second time in his career that he tossed seven innings. The Brewers won two of Suter’s three starts against the Pirates last season, including a 3-0 shutout last September.

      Coldest pitcher:
Andrew Cashner, Orioles (2-8, 4.98 ERA)

Baltimore built a 5-1 lead over rival Washington on Tuesday only to see that advantage disappear in a 9-7 setback. The Orioles dropped their fourth game in four tries to the Nationals this season, while stumbling to 9-27 on the road. Cashner will try to turn around his recent misfortune as the Orioles are winless in his past three starts, while scoring a total of three runs in those contests. The right-hander hasn’t pitched too poorly by putting together nearly identical stat-lines against the Blue Jays and Yankees as he allowed nine hits and three earned runs in six innings each time. Also noteworthy is the 6-0 UNDER streak Cashner is riding in his past six trips to the mound.

      Biggest OVER run:
      Phillies (9-2 last 11)

Philadelphia has been involved in a pair of wild games with St. Louis so far in its three-game series. The Phillies squandered a 4-0 lead on Monday only to rally past the Cardinals in 10 innings, 6-5 and cash the OVER of 8 ½. Philadelphia couldn’t hold onto another two-run advantage on Tuesday as St. Louis came back for a 7-6 win, as the Phillies have allowed 21 runs in the last three games. Jake Arrieta hits the hill this afternoon in the rubber match, looking for a better performance after getting tagged for eight runs in 3.1 innings of a 13-2 setback at Milwaukee.

      Biggest UNDER run:
      Yankees (14-0 last 14)

(Double-dose of Yankees alert) The Bronx Bombers unloaded on the Mariners last night, 7-2, thanks to four home runs. However, New York maintained its incredible UNDER run as the total of 9 ½ was threatened, but never busted. The pitching staff has allowed eight runs in the past five games, while the lineup reached the seven-run mark for the first time in 12 games. The last time the Yankees cashed an OVER came back on June 4 at Detroit in the first game of a doubleheader.

      Matchup to watch:
      Mariners vs. Yankees

The Yankees and Red Sox continue to be a two-horse race atop the American League East and will be for the next three months. New York sits alone atop the division after Tuesday’s victory over Seattle and Boston’s loss at Minnesota. The Bronx Bombers improved to 15-4 over the last 19 games, while Giancarlo Stanton was one of four Yankees to go deep in Tuesday’s win.

The Mariners are facing their third straight potential playoff opponent after a 5-2 homestand against the Angels and Red Sox. Seattle suffered its second loss in the last seven road series openers, but remained two games behind Houston in the AL West after the Astros were tripped up by the Rays.

Felix Hernandez tries to fix his road woes as the Seattle right-hander owns a bloated 7.71 ERA away from Safeco Field this season. Hernandez hasn’t had much luck with the Yankees the last few seasons the Mariners have lost three of his past four starts against New York.

Rookie Jonathan Loaisiga makes his second career start for New York, as he tossed five scoreless innings in his Major League debut against Tampa Bay last Friday in a 5-0 shutout. The Yankees look to continue their recent ownership of the Mariners as they have won seven of the past nine meetings dating back to 2016.

      Betcha didn’t know:
The Rockies held off the Mets on Tuesday, 10-8 to snap an eight-game losing streak at Coors Field. Colorado has won two consecutive home games against an opponent only twice this season, coming against San Francisco in late May and San Diego in late April.

      Biggest public favorite:
      Indians (-290) vs. White Sox

      Biggest public underdog:
      Braves (+130) at Blue Jays

      Biggest line move:
Reds (-120 to -128) vs. Tigers

              *********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

              13) OK, so minor leagues and major leagues use different baseballs. Why?

Brewers’ TV guy Brian Anderson was saying Tuesday night how some minor league pitchers carry major league baseballs around with them, and when they throw in between starts, they use the major league baseballs, so when they get called up, the adjustment is minimal.

              12) Was told recently that it looks like the Oakland A’s AAA affiliate will be moving to the new ballpark in Las Vegas next season (actually in Summerlin). Mets bought the Syracuse Chiefs, so their AAA team is moving there, Word has it the Nationals’ AAA team will be moving to Nashville.

              11) Looks like the CFL will be adding a 10th team soon, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Having an odd number of teams in a league has to be a logistical nightmare.

              10) On ESPN Sunday night, Alex Rodriguez was talking about former Seattle teammate Edgar Martinez, about how Martinez would do drills to improve his vision before games- he claimed it helped him see the ball better. Edgar was a hell of a hitter, so the drills must’ve worked

              9) Mets had only three healthy outfielders, so they’re playing 1B Dom Smith in LF for the time being. Smith is not America’s finest athlete; playing the spacious LF in Denver ain’t easy.

              8) When you blow the lead in the 9th inning, don’t compound your mistake by punching the door or wall in the clubhouse and breaking your hand. Thats what Giants’ reliever Hunter Strickland did Monday night, now he is out at least two months.

              7) St Louis Cardinals haven’t made the playoffs since 2015; last time they missed playoffs three years in a row was 1997-99.

              6) Jaren Jackson and Mo Bamba have told the Memphis Grizzlies, who have the #4 pick, not to draft them. This is a big problem for the NBA; there are some teams none of these guys want to play for. Everyone wants to be on the Warriors, Rockets or play in LA. Hell, Kyrie Irving didn’t want to be Lebron’s teammate.

When the Spurs were winning their titles, most of their players were foreign-born. Not a coincidence, either.

              5) Former NFL referee Jeff Triplette is joining ESPN as a rules analyst. Triplette is the ref who once threw a penalty flag, hit a Browns’ player in the eye and cost the guy three years of his career with the damage done to his eye.

              4) Kentucky lands graduate transfer Reid Travis from Stanford. He scored 19 ppg and grabbed 8.7 rebounds a game LY. Wildcats have a bunch of freshmen coming in, as always; two of them are kids who should be high school seniors but re-classified to the Class of 2018.

              3) The son of former Rams’ CB LeRoy Irvin will play college football at Washington; he will wear number 29 in honor of the great running back Eric Dickerson.

              2) A’s 12, Padres 4— Oakland hit back/back homers in consecutive innings for the first time since 1997, when Canseco-McGwire/Stairs-Canseco did it against Milwaukee.

Ironically, Matt Stairs is now San Diego’s hitting coach.

              1) You can’t make this stuff up: Cubs’ closer Brandon Morrow went on the DL when he hurt his back putting on a pair of pants. I’m 58 but am still pretty nimble when getting dressed.

                    • LEADING OFF: Pair of aces pitching in Bronx, Wacha gets MRI
                      June 21, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                      BIG ARMS IN THE BRONX

With slugger Giancarlo Stanton heating up at the plate, the major league-leading Yankees (49-22) go for a three-game sweep of visiting Seattle. Luis Severino (10-2, 2.09 ERA) pitches for New York against lefty James Paxton (6-1, 3.44), who is 5-0 with a 2.55 ERA since the beginning of May - a nine-start span that includes a no-hitter in Toronto. The Mariners have lost three straight for the first time since April 17-19 against the World Series champion Astros.

                      STRANGE TO SEE

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (10-3, 2.06 ERA) tries to avoid his first three-game losing streak since August 2015 when the Nationals host lowly Baltimore. He'll hope to get some help on offense from slumping slugger Bryce Harper, who went 0 for 4 in a rain-delayed 3-0 loss Wednesday night, dropping his batting average to .209. Washington manager Dave Martinez said Harper has been working hard with batting coach Kevin Long. ''He's going to hit. I know he's going to carry us for a month or two or for whatever,'' Martinez said.

                      DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT

Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha (8-2, 3.20 ERA) is scheduled for an MRI after exiting Wednesday's start with a left oblique strain. ''Feeling a little bit better,'' he said following the game. ''I'm hoping for the best.'' Carlos Martinez (3-3, 2.73) pitches for St. Louis in the opener of a four-game set at Milwaukee. He is 6-4 with a 1.95 ERA against the Brewers. Slumping outfielder Ryan Braun is expected to rejoin the Brewers after the team sent him to Los Angeles on Wednesday for treatment on his achy right thumb. The six-time All-Star is hitting just .236 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs.

                      SEEKING HIS FIRST WIN

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (0-2, 4.67 ERA) pitches at home against last-place San Diego, which has dropped four straight. Bumgarner missed the first two months of the season with a broken pinkie. He has lost four in a row to the Padres, who counter with Tyson Ross (5-4, 3.51). Meanwhile, San Francisco right-hander Jeff Samardzija (shoulder tightness) is set to make his second rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento.

                      READY TO GO

White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia (right hamstring strain) could return to the lineup against Oakland in the opener of a four-game series. Garcia was hitting .333 with two home runs and seven RBIs during a six-game rehab stint with Triple-A Charlotte. He batted .330 with 18 homers and 80 RBIs last season, making his first All-Star team.

                      COMING UP EMPTY

Boston will be looking for a couple of clutch hits against the Minnesota Twins in the finale of its road trip. The Red Sox were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position Wednesday and are 2 for 22 in the first two games of the series. They stranded 18 runners in those two games and have lost four of five overall. Rick Porcello (8-3, 3.70 ERA) starts against Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson (2-4, 3.27), who has allowed only five runs over his last four starts spanning 26 2/3 innings.

                        Thursday MLB Best Bet
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Los Angeles Angels

The Toronto Blue Jays are out in California to begin a seven-game road trip against a couple of AL West teams and it begins with a four-game set against the L.A. Angels tonight. These two teams have already played three times (in Toronto) this year and it was L.A. who took two of three. That was back in late-May though when things were still rolling for L.A. as they've started to fall back towards the .500 mark since then.

Poor play and injuries have been a big reason why the Angels have stumbled the past month, but they do have their most consistent pitcher in Tyler Skaggs on the hill tonight. Can he right this ship and help L.A. improve on their 3-7 SU mark over their last 10 games?

Odds: Toronto (+140) vs L.A. (-155); Total set at 7.5

Skaggs got the start in one of those two earlier Angels wins over Toronto and he was actually squared off against tonight's starter Aaron Sanchez in that game as well. Neither guy lasted longer than five innings that day and at the end of the 5th it was actually 3-0 for the Blue Jays. Toronto led the entire game until the 9th inning when their bullpen gave up four runs and watched L.A. turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead, as that was when Toronto had just recently lost closer Roberto Osuna to off-field issues and were trying to piece together who would take over that role.

You could say it was a crushing loss for Toronto as they went on to lose nine of their next 12 games after that and it's probably the point when the Blue Jays knew they'd end up being “sellers” at this year's trade deadline rather than competing for a return trip to the playoffs.

But Toronto's clubhouse is still full of guys who love to compete and chances are nobody in that room has forgotten about that loss, especially Aaron Sanchez. That bullpen blowup cost him a win for his record, and for a guy who's just 3-5 SU on the year, he could use all the W's he could get.

The good news for Blue Jays fans is the fact that Sanchez has really turned things around of late with a 2.95 ERA over his last three starts, and while he's only been on record for one victory, Toronto has won all three of those Sanchez starts. Considering they are decent underdogs on the road tonight, a brief run like that can't be ignored.

The problem for Toronto is the fact that Skaggs has been on fire of late as he's got a 0.45 ERA over his last three outings and the Angels have won all three of those as well. Unlike Sanchez though, Skaggs has lasted long enough and left with leads in those outings to get all three victories on his individual record. Without a doubt this run by Skaggs is why the Angels are laying the chalk that they are and still getting upwards of 80%+ of the action tonight according to VegasInsider.com. But you can count me as one of those bettors that will be going the other way here.

For one, I do like to flip the result when we get pitching rematches between non-division teams because they are rather rare and the pitcher on the losing side of the first meeting tends to not forget that result. They know they only get one more crack at said team that year and while Sanchez did nothing wrong in that first meeting with Skaggs and the Angels, he definitely wants the result to be different this time around.

Secondly, for as good as Skaggs has been recently (and all year), the majority of his bad starts have come at home. In six home starts this year for Skaggs, the Angels have a 2-4 SU record with the only two times Skaggs has gone less than five innings being included in those home starts as well.

With the Angels being listed as -163, -175, -122, and -104 in those four home losses, you'd have added some nice units to your bankroll fading Skaggs in his own yard, and Toronto does enter this game T10 in the majors in scoring runs against southpaws (96).

Finally, we can't forget about this team-wide slump these Angels are in right now and that in and of itself isn't a bad reason to be fading the Angels these days. L.A. is searching for anything to bring back the great play we saw from them the first two months of the year, and a 5-16 SU run after a day off does them no favors tonight either. And although Toronto is just 1-8 SU in their last nine on the road overall, they have won four of five entering play tonight and love when Sanchez opens up a series as they are 12-5 SU when he does so.

Add it all up and I believe Toronto wins this game more than the 41.6% of the time a +140 price tag suggests, as this downward slide the Angels are in is not something I really want to step in front of, especially when they are still priced like the 10+ games over .500 team they were the first two months of the year.

                        Best Bet: Toronto (+140)

Toronto Blue Jays At Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are getting one of the best seasons in the history of Major League Baseball from superstar Mike Trout. It would be a shame if it went to waste. Despite Trout’s excellence, the Angels are only four games above .500 and hope to improve moving forward to make a run at either the American League West or a Wild Card.

They have a winnable game this week when they host the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto has a losing record and has not performed very well on the road this year so they will be the underdogs.

Trout has been on an incredible streak of getting on base recently and the Blue Jays’ pitchers hope he doesn’t eat them alive. These are the kind of games the Angels need to win to become postseason-bound in MLB gambling.

The MLB Baseball contest will be held at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The game will take place on Thursday at 10:07 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on MLB Network.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                          Odds Analysis

The oddsmakers have pegged Anaheim as the -154 favorite to capture this contest, while Toronto comes in at +139 on the moneyline. The scoring total has been placed at 7.5 runs, with the “over” the slight favorite.

                          Probable Pitchers

The Blue Jays are set to send Aaron Sanchez to the hill. He is 3-5 this season with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Sanchez was very good in 2015 and 2016 and he is only 25 years old, but his ERA often outperformed his peripherals and everything is more in line this season. He is a decent starter but is not on an ace trajectory like some thought at one point.

The Angels will counter with left-hander Tyler Skaggs, who is 6-4 on the year with a 2.81 ERA. Skaggs has an impressive strikeout rate and the peripheral numbers are good as well. He has dealt with injuries in the past but is an impressive hurler when healthy. The Blue Jays could have their hands full against him.

                          Player To Watch

Trout -- The Angels’ versatile MVP is making his case as the best baseball player of all-time. This year has been spectacular, as Trout is batting .335 with 23 homers, 38 RBIs, 60 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. He has an OPS+ of 213 and has already accumulated 6.3 WAR.

Trout does it all in the batter’s box, on the basepaths and in the field. He has no peer but the Angels have failed for years to put enough talent around him. He is going to continue to put up mind-boggling numbers provided he stays healthy, and shortstop Andrelton Simmons has given the team a nice lift this season, but too many players aren’t pulling their weight.

With Albert Pujols, Kole Calhoun and others struggling, the Angels could be hard-pressed to make the playoffs even with the best player in the majors patrolling center field for them every day.

                          Free MLB ATS Picks

The Angels should be heavier favorites in this one. Their pitcher is better and they are playing at home. The Blue Jays are not going to have enough firepower to keep up. Sanchez will pitch OK but Skaggs should outduel him in MLB betting lines.

If the 1.5-run spread gives decent odds, take the Angels there as they should do enough to win by multiple runs in this affair. The scoring total seems right on but the “over” could be the play.

MLB ATS Pick: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5, Toronto Blue Jays 3

                                STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

                                Streaking:
Tyson Ross, San Diego Padres (5-4, 3.51 ERA, $704)

Ross is the perfect value pitcher; as a member of the Padres' starting rotation, he won't often be favored to win, but is good enough to pull out the victory at often-terrific prices. The Padres had won six straight Ross starts prior to his previous outing and went into five of those games as the underdog – making it no surprise that he's near the top of the earnings list at the moment.

Ross is in tough against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants on Thursday, but at a healthy +135 and facing a Giants lineup that isn't exactly the New York Yankees, you could do worse in this spot.

                                Slumping:
Kyle Hendricks, Chicago Cubs (5-6, 3.55 ERA, $-1,074)

Ah, the wonder of betting odds. Compare Hendricks' basic stats to Ross' and there is precious little difference. But when you pitch for the Cubs, you are almost always going to be the fave – and in that regard, Hendricks has been a major disappointment. Chicago has dropped five of his previous seven starts overall, with three of those coming with the Cubs at -185 or better.

Hendricks is at -164 for today's encounter with Matt Harvey and the Cincinnati Reds; while Chicago is in a good spot here, there are just too many superior plays on the board.
