      • Who's Hot and Who's Not
        July 3, 2018

        Week of July 2nd

For the final week of June I took a look at a lot of different MLB totals situation that could come up with specific umpires and/or MLB teams. Blinding playing the 'under' in all the games played by Baltimore, Kansas City, the White Sox, and Mets from then until now would have given you a 14-12-2 record – good for nearly two units when you account for the juice – while taking the 'under' in games with one of those four umpires that were mentioned situated behind the dish gave you a 4-1-1 record – good for another couple of units.

While that approach did work well for one week, last week's piece was more about long-term profits the rest of this baseball season so keep those specific scenarios in mind as you go forward. Today, it's back to being about specific teams being in good or bad spots this upcoming week, so let's get right to it:

        Who's Hot

        Chicago Cubs Bats – 9-1 O/U last 10 games

Over the past week the Chicago Cubs offense has woken up in a huge way and aim to keep it going this week. Chicago had Monday off (which isn't ideal when you are smoking hot offensively), but having scored 10 or more runs in four straight games, you'd better believe the Cubs hitters can't wait to get out there and take advantage of this hot, hitter-friendly July weather. It might be a little tough to capitalize on this situation today given the Cubs are in an afternoon game, but at this rate, the Cubs are one of the best 'over' bets in the league right now.

To be cashing 'over' bets at the clip they are, the Cubs can't do all the scoring themselves, and having a pitching staff that's been struggling is the second part of the equation that's made Chicago a great 'over' bet the past week. No only have the Cubs scored 10+ in four straight and 5+ in seven of their last 11 games overall, but the Cubs pitching staff has given up 5+ runs in four straight and nine of those 11 games. Those kind of numbers lead to a break-even number in terms of wins/losses for Chicago as they are just 5-6 SU in those 11 games, but as an 'over' backer you've been swimming in profits of late.

Now, chances are this Cubs offense does cool off sooner than later and their pitching staff turns it around as well, but with some bad teams like Detroit, Cincinnati, and San Diego as three of Chicago's next four opponents, I wouldn't be that quick to jump in front of this 'over' streak yet for Chicago.

        Who's Not

The American League in Interleague play

With the July 4th holiday on the horizon, plenty of interleague games are taking place this holiday week(end) and that's not exactly good news for fans of AL squads. For years it's been a well-known fact that the American League has dominated interleague play during the regular season, but 2018 may be the year the National League gets to erase all those bad memories. Through Monday's action, NL teams at home in interleague action are 39-35 SU and 37-27 SU when on the road in an AL park. That's quite the turnaround overall, although the one anomaly in the entire interleague standings this year is the fact that two of the worst teams in all of baseball – the Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds – are two of the best bets on the road in interleague play. Baltimore is 7-3 SU in a NL park this year, while Cincinnati isn't the best in the NL with their 4-1 SU road mark in AL parks, but it's still impressive, especially when you consider that the Reds are 7-1 SU overall in interleague play this year.

Tuesday's MLB card brings bettors nine different interleague series to break down and six of the nine feature the NL participant at home. That's not particularly the best role for NL teams, but if the current numbers of the NL being the much better league in interleague play this year, back some or all nine of these NL teams over the next 24-72 hours should prove profitable.

Finally, one NL team on the road in interleague play that does bring a lot of intrigue to Tuesday's betting board are the New York Mets. New York is in Toronto to take on a Blue Jays team that will be welcoming their beloved former star Jose Bautista back to the building and I've always been inclined to back the former star's new team when they return “home” like Bautista is doing here. At plus-money and being in that favorable “NL on road” scenario, the Mets might be a good team to back on Tuesday night.

          Tuesday MLB Best Bet

          L.A. Angels vs. Seattle Mariners

Ever since the L.A. Angels lost sensational rookie Shohei Otani to injury they've been a mess, sliding all the way down to 4th in the AL West, and enter action tonight having lost 14 of their last 20 games overall. Any sort of playoff appearance for the Angels this year looks to be nothing but a pipe dream at this point, but if they are to climb back into the race, a long stretch of winning games has got to start soon.

Tonight they are in Seattle to take on a Mariners team that's in the thick of the AL West race – 0.5 games behind Houston for 1st – and actually did exactly the opposite of this Angels organization when one of their superstars was lost. Seattle has been a winning machine since around the time Robinson Cano was suspended for PED's, so can they continue that dominance overall tonight?

Odds: L.A. Angels (+102) vs Seattle (-112); Total set at 8.5

The Seattle Mariners come into action tonight on a seven-game winning streak after sweeping away basement dwellers like Baltimore (four games) and Kansas City (three games) the past week. Seattle rewarded anyone that was willing to swallow all the chalk with them this weekend as they closed at -200 or higher in all three games against the Royals, and after a weekend like that it should come as no surprise that Seattle will attract plenty of support tonight with their odds basically near the pick'em range.

VegasInsider.com currently shows about 80% of the ML wagers on this game tonight have already come Seattle's way. That's not particularly a percentage I'd really like to join, but are the Mariners the better side?

Well for one, Seattle has won four of their last five with the Angels this year and that includes a 5-3 win over tonight's Angels starter Andrew Heaney. Seattle did all of that damage against Heaney in just the first four innings as they jumped all over him early on and ended up hitting three balls out of the place off Heaney as well. That was about a month ago and while the two teams have gone different directions since then, I'm not totally sure that the Angels should be priced as plus-money underdogs tonight.

L.A. actually closed as a -121 road favorite that day and that was in the midst of Seattle playing some good baseball as well. The Angels were in the beginning phase of their post-Otani swoon and for the most part you can simply chalk that loss up to nothing more than a bad outing by Heaney. That's fine, they happen, but it's not like Heaney, and the Angels 5-9 SU record in his 14 starts this year, haven't been a little snake-bitten by some bad luck when he's on the mound.

Heaney comes into this game with a 3.95 ERA on the season despite those poor win-loss records, and the good news for Angels fans tonight is the idea that bad starts for Heaney usually don't happen twice in a row. Heaney has six starts of 5 IP or less this year, and just three have come since his first three starts of the season as he was not looking to get overworked coming back from Tommy John surgery at the time.

But in those three starts since, Heaney has a complete-game, shutout (1-0) win, and a 6-5 no-decision loss that saw him go 8 IP and had his 5-3 lead blown in the 9th by the bullpen. The latter of those two results came after the rough outing against this Mariners team, and the final sub-5 IP start that has yet to be mentioned came in Heaney's last outing when he was roughed up by the Red Sox, so good things could be on the horizon for him and the Angels tonight.

When it comes down to it, I just believe that this Angels team is going to spend the next 4-6 weeks making a run at getting back into the playoff picture and see where they end up by the middle of August. If they are still out of it then, then 2019 plans can begin in earnest, but 2018 was supposed to be the year we saw the Angels go for it. There is too much talent on this team overall for them to be bascially a .500 team at this point of the year and I think a very big run for the Angels is coming.

With a great bounce-back candidate on the hill like Heaney, and we as bettors getting about an extra 20 cents in value on the line compared to Heaney's last trip to Seattle a month ago, I've got to back the road side tonight. As Seattle starts Wade LeBlanc again (he started against Heaney in that earlier game), I'm looking for the script to get flipped tonight as the Angels become the ones to halt Seattle's winning run against the worst of the worst in MLB the past week.

The Angels may be just a .500 team on paper, but they are exponentially better than what Kansas City or Baltimore trots out there and this step up in competition level for this Mariners team after a week of playing “cupcakes” shouldn't be taken that lightly. STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

            Streaking:
Zach Eflin, Philadelphia Phillies (6-2, 3.02 ERA, $609)

Eflin has been a revelation for the Phillies, who have won each of his past five starts and seven of his previous nine overall. Eflin was the underdog in every one of those outings, and he has been on fire, having allowed two or fewer runs in five straight appearances. He has also kept the ball in the park in each of those starts.

Oddsmakers are wise to him Tuesday; he's at -154 against visiting Baltimore, his first stint as a favorite all season. But with the Orioles countering with human dumpster fire Alex Cobb, Eflin is a great option.

            Slumping:
Andrew Heaney, Los Angeles Angels (4-5, 3.95 ERA, $-644)

Things have gone quite poorly for Heaney, who was at least a break-even value play to start the season but has since cratered. The Mariners have dropped six of his previous eight starts, and the gopher ball has been a major problem of late, with Heaney having surrendered seven home runs over his past four appearances. He had allowed just four in his first 10 starts.

Heaney and the Angels are a -110 toss-up against host Seattle and those Mariners bats, combined with Heaney's dreadful road numbers (0-3, 6.14 ERA), make him a starter to avoid Tuesday.

              • Red Sox win 11-4 to drop Nats to .500
                July 3, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer during a six-run fifth inning, J.D. Martinez and Eduardo Nunez also went deep, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals 11-4 on Tuesday.

Martinez drove in four and leads the majors with 26 homers and 71 RBIs. Boston has won 17 of its last 19 interleague games.

Washington has lost four straight and 16 of 21 to fall to 42-42, its first time at .500 since it was 17-17.

Red Sox starter Brian Johnson allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings. Brandon Workman (1-0) pitched a perfect seventh.

Nationals starter Tanner Roark (3-10) allowed a career-high nine runs in seven innings and is 1-8 with a 5.19 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts) since May 5.

                YANKEES 8, BRAVES 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Kyle Higashioka each homered and New York went ahead early and hung on to beat Atlanta.

Aaron Judge had two hits and a walk, and he stole two bases for the first time in his career. Hicks also walked twice as New York drew eight free passes.

The Yankees improved to a major league-best 21-6 against left-handed starters and remain a game behind Boston for the majors' best record.

Nick Markakis and Ender Inciarte each hit two-run homers for Atlanta, which ended a four-game winning streak. Braves starter Sean Newcomb allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings in the shortest start of his career.

A.J. Cole (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the win.

                INDIANS 6, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY (AP) - Yan Gomes hit a sixth-inning grand slam as Cleveland rallied to beat Kansas City.

The Indians lead the AL with eight grand slams. Francisco Lindor hit a grand slam Monday.

Edwin Encarnacion led off the sixth with a walk and Brandon Guyer was hit by a pitch from Danny Duffy (4-8). Yonder Alonso's infield single loaded the bases. Gomes drove a 1-0 Duffy pitch into the left-field bullpen.

Chad Allen got the final four outs for his 17th save in 18 chances. He stranded two runners in the ninth after a single and a walk.

Shane Bieber (4-0) picked up the victory and remains undefeated in his first five big league starts.

                PHILLIES 3, ORIOLES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Zach Eflin pitched seven strong innings for his sixth straight victory and Andrew Knapp had the winning hit for the second straight game.

Rhys Hoskins had a two-run double for the Phillies, who have won 11 of 16.

Mark Trumbo homered for Baltimore, which has dropped eight of nine.

The game was delayed at the start 1 hour, 25 minutes due to rain and mostly played under a persistent drizzle.

Eflin (7-2) allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks to become the first Phillies pitcher since Cliff Lee in 2011 to record six consecutive wins.

Orioles starter Alex Cobb (2-10) gave up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.

                CUBS 5, TIGERS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo drove in his second run of the game in the seventh inning to snap a tie, Kyle Schwarber followed with a solo homer in the eighth and Chicago rebounded from an early three-run deficit to edge Detroit for its fifth straight win.

With one out in the seventh, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist singled off reliever Daniel Stumpf (1-4). Rizzo's slow bouncer up the middle resulted in a force of Zobrist at second, but Jose Iglesias' throw to first was too late to double up Rizzo and Heyward scored from third to put Chicago ahead for the first time, 4-3.

Trailing 3-0, Albert Almora, Jr. and Heyward each drove in a run with a double, then Rizzo followed with an RBI single in Chicago's three-run fifth.

Justin Wilson (3-2) worked around an error to pitch a scoreless seventh and earn the win. Pedro Strop pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save in four chances.

                BREWERS 2, TWINS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit a two-run homer and three pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as Milwaukee beat Minnesota.

The Twins fell to 1-7 on their current nine-game road trip.

Milwaukee broke through in the fifth against starter Jake Odorizzi (3-6) when pinch-hitter Nate Orf walked and stole second before Thames hit his 12th home run of the season, a liner that barely cleared the right-field fence.

Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra (5-5) pitched five shutout innings. He gave up two hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Josh Hader pitched a season-high three innings in relief for the Brewers and didn't allow a hit. Corey Knebel notched his ninth save in 11 attempts by striking out the side in the ninth.

                BLUE JAYS 8, METS 6

TORONTO (AP) - Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the eighth inning and Toronto rallied from a five-run deficit to beat New York.

Yangervis Solarte hit a tying three-run home run off Robert Gsellman in the seventh before Gurriel went deep off Tim Peterson (1-1) in the eighth as the Blue Jays won for the 11th time in 14 home games.

John Axford (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings to earn the win. Tyler Clippard got the final out for his sixth save in 10 opportunities, stranding runners at first and second.

Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler allowed two runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings but was denied his first victory since April 29 at San Diego. The struggling Mets have lost 11 of 13.

                ROCKIES 8, GIANTS 1

DENVER (AP) - Antonio Senzatela pitched seven scoreless innings in his first start of the season, Nolan Arenado hit his NL-leading 22nd home run and Colorado beat San Francisco.

Colorado's Charlie Blackmon had three hits, including his first homer since June 20. Trevor Story had an RBI triple for the Rockies, who have won five of six.

Senzatela (3-1), recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Albuquerque, struck out four and walked none while limiting the Giants to three hits.

Chris Stratton (8-6) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits.

                ASTROS 5, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Josh Reddick and Tony Kemp homered, Dallas Keuchel worked seven solid innings to win for only the second time in his last nine starts and Houston beat Texas.

Houston is 11-4 this season against its instate division rival, with seven consecutive road wins in the series.

Texas leadoff hitter Shin-Soo Choo walked twice and had two singles to extend his career-best on-base streak to 43 games, the longest in the majors since Atlanta's Freddie Freeman's 46-gamer two years ago. Choo is three games shy of Julio Franco's team record of 46 in a row set 25 years ago.

Keuchel (5-8) struck out seven while allowing only two runs.

Houston went ahead to stay in the first when Yuli Gurriel and Reddick had RBI doubles off Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-2).

                ATHLETICS 6, PADRES 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jed Lowrie hit a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double in the decisive sixth, Mark Canha added a solo homer that inning, and Oakland rallied to beat San Diego. Chad Pinder added a solo homer in the seventh.

The A's finally got to San Diego starter Clayton Richard (7-8) in the sixth. Pinder walked to start the sixth as the first five hitters reached base. Khris Davis followed Lowrie's double with a run-scoring single before Canha's 11th home run, after a double play.

Emilio Pagan (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win in relief of A's starter Chris Bassitt.

                WHITE SOX 12, REDS 8

CINCINNATI (AP) - Daniel Palka and Avisail Garcia each homered twice, and Yoan Moncada tripled with the bases loaded in the 12th inning as Chicago pulled off its biggest comeback of the season.

Trailing 7-2 after five innings, the White Sox pulled even in the ninth on Garcia's solo homer off Raisel Iglesias, then pulled it out with the help of a couple of Reds errors.

They loaded the bases in the 12th with a walk and two errors. Moncada's triple off Jackson Stephens (2-1) broke the tie, and Yolmer Sanchez followed with another triple.

Hector Santiago (3-3) fanned six in two innings as the White Sox extended their domination in the interleague series. They're 17-5 all-time against the Reds, including 11-3 in Cincinnati.

                    ***************************

Wednesday’s List of 13: Happy birthday, America!!!!

                    13) This is the Webster’s definition of “compete”:

“strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others who are trying to do the same.”

Maybe the NBA should make playoff series best-of-3, to give lesser teams at least a chance to pull an upset. The NBA playoffs, in their current format, are boring as hell; who can beat the Warriors best-of-7? Best-of-3 series would be a lot more fun to watch.

                    12) In this year’s playoffs, only 4 of 15 playoff series went to seven games.

3 series were four-game sweeps, 6 series went five games, two went six. In other words, 9 of 15 playoff series ended in either four or five games. NBA needs shorter playoff series- more drama equals better TV ratings, which is very important.

                    11) Colorado Rockies will almost undoubtedly trade OF Carlos Gonzalez by the All-Star break; CarGo becomes a 10-and-5 man on July 19, at which point he has veto rights on any trade Colorado tries to make involving him.

10-and-5 means this: 10+ years in major leagues, last 5+ years with same club.

                    10) Dumbest baseball stat ever; Caleb Ferguson pitched the last three innings for the Dodgers in their 17-1 win Monday night- he got a save!!! If you pitch the last three innings, you get a save no matter what the score— a ridiculous rule.

                    9) Pretty nasty brawl broke out in a basketball game between Australia and the Philippines over the weekend in a World Cup qualifying tournament; someone even got hit in the back with a chair. Luckily the crowd was set back away from the court a little bit so it didn’t spill over into the crowd, but it was a nasty fight.

                    8) Avery Bradley is returning to the LA Clippers for two-years, $25M; if playing hoops in LA is so freakin’ great, how come the Lakers are making all the noise and not the Clippers? They play in the same arena.

Lakers have a way better history than the Clippers, but what history did the Warriors have before five years ago?

                    7) Jay Cutler is 35 years old; he played QB for the Dolphins LY, but his NFL career may be over now, unless another starting QB gets hurt in training camp. Cutler is 74-79 in 12 years as an NFL starting QB; he split two playoff games with the 2010 Bears.

Anyway, Cutler is married to actress Kristin Cavallari; the couple will be featured on a reality show on the E! Channel this fall, called “Very Cavallari.” Previews I read Tuesday said that Cutler has a dry wit and could steal some scenes.

Remember, before his NFL comeback last summer, Cutler was supposed to be the new voice in the CBS TV booth next to Jim Nantz, not Tony Romo.

                    6) Hitters who have come up with most men on base, and %age of those runners they knocked in:
                    Justin Upton 257 (10.5%)
                    Nick Markakis 251 (18.7%)
                    Scooter Gennett 248 (16.5%)
                    Joey Votto 246 (14.3%)

                    5) Hitters with minimum 150 PA who have knocked in worst %age of baserunners:
Austin Barnes LA (4 of 95)
                    Matt Joyce A’s (6 of 95)
Carlos Gomez TB (10 of 157)
Christian Vazquez Bos (9 of 132)

                    • LEADING OFF: Nats fall to .500, Shohei back in the box
                      July 3, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

                      NATIONAL DECLINE

The Nationals could use a spark before the July 4 fireworks go off in D.C. Washington is at risk of falling below .500 for the first time since May 2 as it continues a series against Boston at 11 a.m. EDT. The Red Sox thumped the Nationals 11-4 on Tuesday, giving Washington its fourth straight loss and 16th in 21 games to fall to 42-42. That slide has the preseason NL East favorites chasing the Braves and Phillies in the division. Erick Fedde (1-3, 6.00) tries to stop Washington's skid against Boston left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (9-3, 4.11).

                      THE SHO GOES ON

Shohei Ohtani is back from the disabled list, albeit without full use of his electric right arm. The Japanese two-way sensation has been cleared to hit and was in the Angels' lineup as a designated hitter Tuesday night, but he won't be pitching anytime soon due to a Grade 2 sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament suffered more than three weeks ago. Ohtani has received stem cell therapy and a platelet-rich plasma injection on his right elbow, and it's unclear if he'll be able to return to the mound this year. For now, Los Angeles welcomes him as a hitter. He entered Tuesday batting .289 with a .907 OPS and six homers in 114 at-bats.

                      ROTATION RESET

Gerrit Cole (9-2) will pitch on regular rest for the Astros after a slight tweak to their rotation. Lance McCullers Jr. was initially scheduled to start at Texas, but Cole will pitch instead. Justin Verlander (9-4) will follow Thursday at home against the White Sox and McCullers goes Friday. Manager A.J. Hinch said the switch keeps Cole and Verlander pitching every fifth day, and provides extra rest for McCullers (9-3) and Charlie Morton (10-2). The reset rotation means likely All-Star selection Verlander is scheduled for the final game before the break. ''This is always going to be the priority,'' said Hinch, the All-Star manager who then won't have Verlander available to pitch for the AL team on July 17 in Washington D.C.

                      BAUER POWER

Trevor Bauer tries to carry over an outstanding June when the Indians play at Kansas City. Bauer (7-6, 2.45) was 3-3 with a 2.18 ERA last month, striking out 62 batters in 41 1/3 innings. He gets probably his easiest test of the year against the Royals, who scored a major league-low 58 runs in June - the second-lowest output was Tampa Bay at 87.

                        Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Mariners (8-0 last eight)

Seattle started its recent east coast road swing by dropping five of six games against New York and Boston. However, the Mariners found their footing against struggling Baltimore by sweeping the Orioles to conclude the trip. Seattle returned home and pulled out the brooms on Kansas City in a three-game sweep and followed that up with a 4-1 victory over the Angels on Tuesday to extend its winning streak to eight games.

The Mariners’ pitching staff has yielded two runs or less five times during this current hot streak as Mike Leake heads to the mound today. Seattle owns a terrific 9-1 record in Leake’s last 10 starts, although the only loss in this stretch came in his past home start against Boston on June 17 as he allowed five runs in a 9-3 defeat. The Mariners have had the Angels’ number this season by capturing five of seven matchups, although all seven games have been played at Safeco Field.

Coldest team: Twins (2-10 last 12)

Minnesota concludes a disastrous road trip this afternoon at Miller Park in Milwaukee as the Twins look to avoid the sweep against the Brewers. The Twins have posted a 1-7 record on their current away swing, including five straight losses to the NL Central opponents. After allowing 35 runs in a three-game sweep by the Cubs last weekend, the Twins jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Monday’s opener at Milwaukee before falling in extra innings, 6-5. Minnesota’s offense didn’t show up in Tuesday’s 2-0 shutout loss, as the Twins dropped to 5-16 in their past 21 games away from Target Field.

Staff ace Jose Berrios tries to turn things around for Minnesota as the right-hander is coming off a shaky performance in a 10-6 loss to the Cubs last Friday. Berrios was tagged for a season-high six runs in 4.1 innings, as the Twins fell to 1-5 in his past six road starts. Berrios is facing the Brewers for the first time in his career, as Minnesota owns a 4-2 record this season after he allowed four runs or more in his previous outing.

Hottest pitcher: Lance McCullers, Jr., Astros (9-3, 3.55 ERA)

Houston picked up its seventh consecutive win against Texas last night and the fifth straight victory in Arlington, 5-3. That win snapped a three-game skid as the Astros turn to McCullers, who is unbeaten in his last six trips to the mound. McCullers has put together six consecutive quality starts since allowing seven runs in an 8-6 loss at Cleveland in late May, including seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory at Tampa Bay his last time out. The right-hander faced the Rangers back on May 31 in Arlington, striking out 10 in a 9-3 win as a nearly -200 favorite.

Coldest pitcher: Dylan Covey, White Sox (3-3, 4.82 ERA)

Covey pulled off a pair of solid underdog victories over the Red Sox and Indians in early June, but has trended backwards recently. The Chicago right-hander has allowed 18 runs (16 earned) in his last three outings, while not lasting past the fifth inning in any of those starts. The Rangers knocked around Covey to the tune of nine runs and eight hits in 2.1 innings of an 11-3 blowout of the White Sox last Friday. Chicago finishes off its three-game series at Cincinnati as the White Sox rallied past the Reds on Tuesday in extra innings, 12-8.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (8-3 last 11)

The Dodgers have crushed the Pirates in each of the first two games of their series at Chavez Ravine by a combined score of 25-4. Los Angeles followed up a 17-1 rout on Monday by beating Pittsburgh, 8-3 on Tuesday, as the offense has woken up since plating a total of two runs in a pair of losses to Colorado last weekend. The Dodgers are in the midst of a 20-game stretch in which they don’t leave southern California as they face the rival Angels this weekend in Anaheim, followed by a four-game set at San Diego. Rich Hill heads to the mound against the Pirates seeking the three-game sweep tonight, as the Dodgers’ southpaw has hit the UNDER in two of his last three starts, while no-hitting Pittsburgh through nine innings last season before allowing a walk-off homer in the 10th inning of a 1-0 defeat at PNC Park.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (7-1 last eight)

Philadelphia’s pitching staff has stepped up of late by allowing three runs or fewer in five of the past six games. Yes, the Phillies yielded 17 runs to the Nationals last Friday, but Philadelphia has rebounded by giving up seven runs in the past three games combined. In this stretch, the offense hasn’t been spectacular by scoring four runs or fewer in seven of the previous eight contests, but the Phillies have managed to post a 5-1 record in the last six games. The Phillies turn to their ace on the mound this afternoon as Aaron Nola is unbeaten in eight home starts, while owning a 1.77 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. At home, the Phillies are 5-2-1 to the UNDER in Nola’s eight starts, including a 4-1 mark in the last five outings at Citizens Bank Park.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Rockies

The NL West race continues to be extremely competitive with the Diamondbacks owning a 1 ½-game edge over the Dodgers heading into Independence Day. The two teams sitting behind Arizona and Los Angeles are right in the mix as Colorado seeks a three-game sweep of San Francisco at Coors Field. The Rockies rallied past the Giants on Monday, 5-2, followed by an 8-1 pounding on Tuesday to improve to 5-2 in the past seven games.

Colorado sends out southpaw Tyler Anderson to the mound tonight as looks to fix his bloated 5.26 ERA at home this season. The Rockies own a dreadful 1-6 record in Anderson’s seven starts at Coors Field, but he was solid in his last appearance (on the road) against the Dodgers last Friday in a 3-1 victory as a nearly +150 underdog. Anderson didn’t fare well in his last start against San Francisco on May 20 as he allowed five runs in 5.1 innings of a 9-5 defeat.

Another left-hander heads to the hill as Andrew Suarez takes the ball for the Giants. Suarez has overcome a tough start to his rookie season by giving up two earned runs or less in four consecutive outings, while beating Arizona as a road underdog his last time out. The southpaw picked up a no-decision in a 6-5 loss at Coors Field on May 28, in spite of striking out seven in five innings of work.

                        Betcha didn’t know:
The Mets have been terrible recently (Betcha did know that). New York squandered a 6-1 lead in Tuesday’s 8-6 loss at Toronto to fall to 2-11 in the last 13 games, while allowing at least five runs in each of their past six road defeats. The Mets have put together an 8-19 record in Game 2’s of a series this season, including a 1-9 mark in their last 10 in this situation on the road.

                        Biggest public favorite:
                        Cubs (-225) vs. Tigers

                        Biggest public underdog:
                        Giants (+115) at Rockies

                        Biggest line move:
Twins (-105 to -112) at Brewers
