    • Best and worst MLB starting pitchers to bet on in July
      Marc Lawrence

At 45 years old, just the fact that Bartolo Colon is wearing a major league uniform is amazing. However, his past July efforts don't stack up well for the right hander.

Independence Day Fireworks and the MLB All-Star game always go hand-in-hand during the month of July. It’s also signals the start of the second-half of the MLB campaign. And as we’ve come to learn the key to each and every team’s fortunes lies with the pitching staff.

Can these pitchers sew up critical wins or will they unravel like a hand-me-down suit? Stay tuned. What we do know is that certain pitchers love hurling this time of the season while others tend to get lit up like a roman candle.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of July. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in July, winning 33 percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each July over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

      Note:
      * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s July list.

      GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

      Cole, Gerrit • 9-3 (6-1 H)

As if Cole was not effective enough this month in his career, the right-hander is having a fantastic year with the World Series champs. Cole's evolution began last season when he discovered a changeup that worked, to go along with two fastball's, a curve and a slider. Expect him to continue to stay hot in July.

      deGrom, Jacob • 10-4 (5-2 A)

In truth, the only thing that holds deGrom back from continuing to win in July is his teammates. The New York right-hander has a 1.69 ERA this season, but in 10 of last 12 starts, the Mets have scored three or fewer runs. Let's see if deGrom can overcome this adversity.

      *Duffy, Danny • 12-4 (7-1 H)

The Kansas City lefty is now on a bad baseball team and is showing the effects of it. Duffy has either been rather good or pathetically awful with little in between. He's not helped himself with 46 walks in just over 94.2 innings and been taken yard 18 times. Keeping up prior numbers could be an issue for Duffy.

      *Hamels, Cole • 11-4 (5-1 H)

At some point of this month, Hamels will likely be traded with the July 31 deadline coming. The lefty is no longer the same pitcher he was when with Philadelphia, at 34 years old now. His command is shakier and he's prone to more home runs allowed, but if he's traded to a contender, that might resharpen the focus and make his a consistent winner again.

      *Lynn, Lance • 8-3 (6-1 H)

Never a hard thrower, Lynn has always found a way to work out of trouble. He walks more batters than he did before the injury, which is caused by nibbling more. But he knows how to avoid trouble and can be a reliable five/six inning hurler.

      Quintana, Jose 11-5 (7-3 H)

Plain and simple, it's time for Quintana to stand up. The Cubs lefty was an excellent pitcher on the other side of Chicago but has been indifferent in his time on the North Side. His inability to spot the fastball inside at the knees or chest high has curtailed his production. With a largely underachieving starting staff, the Cubs need the pitcher they traded for.

      *Tanaka, Masahiro • 10-5 (8-1 H)

The new Yankees coaching staff has Tanaka on a shorter leash, but he keeps on winning. As the month starts he will be coming off the DL with a hamstring problem, but he's 7-2 this season and 59-30 lifetime in the Pinstripes and everyone will expect that to continue when he starts dealing again.

      BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

      Colon, Bartolo • 4-10 (1-5 A)

At 45 years old, just the fact that Colon is wearing a major league uniform is amazing. Nonetheless, his stops in recent years have been on pitching poor teams who don't have anyone in the minors they trust to be even a .500 pitcher. Colon knows how to pitch and where to place the ball, but to expect many W's is a pipedream. This month could lead to his undoing.

      Matz, Stephen • 3-8 (1-4 H)

After being a solid pitcher in 2015-16, Matz was injured last season and has not found the previous groove. His walks are up and strikeouts are down this season, which is usually a tell of diminished results. Playing for a Mets club with a host of injuries is the new norm for the Blue and Orange. Matz has not won often in July and that probably continues this season.

      Ray, Robbie • 4-10 (1-5 H)

After missing almost two months, the Diamondbacks talented and mystifying portsider retuned on June 27. Nobody has ever questioned Ray's ability and it looked like after having a career-year in 2017, he had grown into the focused pitcher everyone was hoping for. In spite of 51 strikeouts in only 33.2 innings, Ray has an ERA of 4.01 and a WHIP of 1.37. Simply put, it’s hard to trust this pitcher.

      Shields, James • 5-11 (1-5 A)

If not for the White Sox willing to live with Shields’ mediocre repertoire at 36 and desire to have a veteran pitcher on a youngish squad, he would probably be out of baseball. Bet against Shields and Chi-Sox again this month.

          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

          Streaking:
Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs (10-2, 2.18 ERA, $975)

Lester has turned back the clock, having reeled off six consecutive victories while allowing just four total runs in his previous five starts. And with Lester either an underdog or at even odds in each of the past three games, that has meant a tidy profit for bettors; Lester comes into Sunday's start ranked third among starters in total earnings.

Lester is a comfortable -172 favorite against visiting Minnesota, but should fare well against a Twins team that has lost four of five.

          Slumping:
Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (6-5, 3.68 ERA, $-95)

Things continue to go south for the veteran left-hander, after he was tagged for six runs – thanks in large part to five walks – in just one inning in an 11-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays last time out. Gonzalez has surrendered 17 runs in just 14 1/3 innings over his previous four starts, with the Nationals dropping four of those games.

The Phillies are slightly below average vs. lefties, but with the way Gonzalez has pitched of late, taking host Philadelphia at +102 is a decent play Sunday.

              • Jon Lester stars on bound and at plate for Cubs
                July 1, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Jon Lester hit a three-run homer in an eight-run second inning and wound up with his NL-leading 11th victory in the Chicago Cubs' 11-10 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Ian Happ also homered for the Cubs. They have scored at least 10 runs in four straight games for the first time since 1930. Chicago swept the three-game series and has won four in a row overall.

Lester (11-2) allowed four runs, two of them earned, and nine hits in five-plus innings.

Javier Baez, who doubled twice, Happ and Willson Contreras each had three hits.

Mitch Garver hit a two-run homer off reliever Dillon Maples in the Twins' five-run eighth.

Cubs closer Brandon Morrow got one out in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 19 chances. Lance Lynn (5-7) was the loser.

Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer and Jake Cave also homered for the Twins.

                RAYS 3, ASTROS 2.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell struck out 10, reliever Diego Castillo fanned Jose Altuve in a key spot and Tampa Bay beat Houston to end a homestand.

The Rays went 8-1 at Tropicana Field, taking three of four from the World Series champion Astros, sweeping three from the New York Yankees and winning both games against Washington. Tampa Bay set a team record by allowing no more than two runs in its sixth straight game.

Matt Duffy hit a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning that put the Rays ahead 2-1 and Mallex Smith homered in the eighth. Evan Gattis homered twice for Houston.

Snell (11-4) allowed one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Charlie Morton (10-2) struck out 11 in 6 2/3 innings.

                DODGERS 6, ROCKIES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Matt Kemp had three hits and drove in four runs, including a go-ahead homer leading off the eighth inning that rallied Los Angeles past Colorado to prevent a sweep.

Kemp sent his 14th homer of the season over the center-field wall off Adam Ottavino (4-2) to put Los Angeles ahead 5-4. It was the Dodgers' first homer of July after they hit a major league-leading and franchise-record 55 in June.

One out later, Yasiel Puig doubled and Joc Pederson followed and reached on an infield single to second. Puig ran hard into third and hopped back and forth before taking off for the plate, sliding belly first. He got up and swung his arms in wild celebration with the Dodgers ahead 6-4.

Kemp drove in the Dodgers' first three runs with an RBI groundout in the first, a double in the third and a single in the fifth.

Daniel Hudson (3-2) went one inning. Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save.

Nolan Arenado hit his 21st homer and had an RBI grounder for the Rockies.

                GIANTS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 6

PHOENIX (AP) - Brandon Belt and Joe Panik drove in two runs each and Hunter Pence had a pinch-hit, two-run double, leading San Francisco to a series sweep against Arizona.

The Giants had 11 hits in the first five innings and cruised to their seventh win in eight games.

A four-run fifth inning highlighted by Pence's double off reliever Silvino Bracho gave the Giants an 8-3 lead. Cory Gearrin (1-1) got one out in the fourth to earn the win in relief of starter Derek Holland.

The Giants tagged Diamondbacks starter Zack Godley (9-6) for seven runs on nine hits in four-plus innings, ending his four-game winning streak.

Arizona rallied with two runs in the seventh on Paul Goldschmidt's 18th home run of the season, and Jarrod Dyson became the eighth player in team history to record at least two hits, two runs batted in and two stolen bases in a single game. The Diamondbacks brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth with two outs, but Will Smith struck out Jake Lamb for Smith's second save.

                ORIOLES 8, ANGELS 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo hit consecutive homers after the Angels lost a popup in the sun, and Baltimore beat Los Angeles to end a seven-game losing streak.

After the Orioles took charge with a six-run fourth inning, Trumbo homered again in the fifth and Trey Mancini also connected to help Baltimore secure its only victory during a seven-game homestand that began with four straight losses to Seattle. The Orioles improved to 1-15 against the AL West and won at home for only the second time in 19 games since May 13.

Kevin Gausman (4-6) weathered temperatures in the upper 90s to go eight innings, allowing two runs and six hits to end a run of eight straight winless starts.

Kole Calhoun homered and Albert Pujols drove in a run for the Angels.

Deck McGuire (0-1) was the loser.

                MARINERS 1, ROYALS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - James Paxton limited Kansas City to two hits and struck out 11 in eight innings and Seattle beat the Royals for its season-best seventh consecutive victory.

Paxton (8-2) also allowed two walks. From Ladner, British Columbia, pitched on Canada Day - and his bobblehead day at Safeco Field. Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth for his 32nd save.

Kansas City rookie Brad Keller (2-3) allowed six hits in eight innings. He allowed only one extra-base hit, Kyle Seager's double in the seventh inning.

The only run came in the second inning. Ben Gamel dropped a broken-bat single into shallow center to score Kyle Seager from second base.

                INDIANS 15, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Francisco Lindor homered and hit two of Cleveland's 11 doubles and the Indians ended Oakland's six-game winning streak.

Edwin Encarnacion also homered and Jose Ramirez, Yonder Alonso and Lonnie Chisenhall each added two doubles. The Indians nearly matched the team record of 12 doubles set against Minnesota in 1996.

Alonso had four hits and three RBIs. Cleveland broke open the game with an eight-run eighth inning - its first 10 batters reached without an out.

Mike Clevinger (7-3) allowed three runs over six uneven innings as the AL Central leaders avoided a sweep. The Indians were outscored 10-3 in the first two games of the series and were on the verge of being swept for the second time this season before breaking out against A's starter Frankie Montas (4-2).

                WHITE SOX 10, RANGERS 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Matt Davidson hit a two-run double in his second straight three-hit game to lead Chicago past Texas.

Avisail Garcia had four hits, and Davidson and Jose Abreu drove in three runs apiece to help the White Sox avoid a sweep to start a 10-game road trip, their longest of the season.

Texas' Shin-Soo Choo extended the majors' longest on-base streak this season to 42 games. He returned after missing a game with a strained right quadriceps that the club said will limit him defensively for a few weeks. He was 0 for 4 as the designated hitter with an eighth-inning walk that kept alive the third-longest streak in club history, and longest since 1995. Choo's 12-game hitting streak ended.

Reynaldo Lopez (4-5) made it through 6 1/3 innings in the boiling Texas heat. One-time Texas closer Joakim Soria got five outs for his 12th save. Cole Hamels (4-7) was the loser.

                PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 3, 13 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Andrew Knapp homered just inside the right-field foul pole in the 13th inning to lift Philadelphia past Washington.

The Philles took three of four in the series, with all the wins by one run.

The Nationals are 6-15 in their past 21 games.

Knapp turned on Justin Miller's fastball and lofted it into the bleachers in right field. Miller (5-1) gave up the run in 1 1/3 innings of work. Nick Pivetta (5-7) got the win with a scoreless inning.

                REDS 8, BREWERS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Peraza kept up Cincinnati's parade of grand slams, sending Matt Harvey and the Reds over NL Central-leading Milwaukee.

Peraza connected in the sixth inning for the Reds' ninth slam this year, tying the season franchise record set in 2002. It was Cincinnati's second in two games and third in the last eight - pitcher Mike Lorenzen had a pinch-hit slam Saturday, and pitcher Anthony DeSclafani went deep with the bases loaded on June 24 against the Cubs. The last-place Reds have won 11 of 14, and the last eight of 11 against teams that were in first place when their series started.

Harvey (4-5) allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings and won his third straight start.

Peraza hit his first career slam, tagging reliever Aaron Wilkerson.

Freddy Peralta (3-1) took the loss.

                METS 5, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Steven Matz and three relievers combined on a four-hitter and New York beat Miami to escape the NL East cellar after a one-day stay.

The Mets, who endured their worst June ever, won for only the second time in the past 12 games.

Matz (4-5) pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed only an unearned run. He also singled for his first RBI of the year. New York's bullpen leads the majors in losses but limited Miami to one hit in the final 3 2/3 innings. Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit his 14th homer off Dan Straily (3-4). Todd Frazier had two hits and scored three times, and Kevin Plawecki doubled home New York's first run.

Matz was 2 for 26 this year before his two-out RBI single in the fourth put the Mets ahead 3-0.

                BRAVES 6, CARDINALS 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mike Foltynewicz threw five shutout innings and Freddie Freeman homered in Atlanta's victory over St. Louis.

Foltynewicz (6-4) gave up one hit - a fourth-inning single to Marcell Ozuna. He struck out nine and walked three in an 86-pitch outing. John Gant (2-3) took the loss.

A.J. Minter picked up his third save in as many tries by setting the side down in order in the ninth.

The Braves outscored St. Louis 22-10 in sweeping a three-game series in St. Louis for first time since May 11-13, 2012. Tommy Pham homered for St. Louis.

                TIGERS 9, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Nick Castellanos hit his fourth career grand slam, Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven strong innings and Detroit beat Toronto to snap a snapping an 11-game losing streak.

JaCoby Jones hit a two-run homer to help the Tigers won for the first time since June 17.

Niko Goodrum had four hits and Jose Iglesias had two hits and two RBIs for Detroit.

Zimmermann (3-0) allowed one run and five hits in his third start since returning from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss more than a month.

Iglesias chased Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ (10-4) with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth.

Wearing red jerseys and caps for Canada Day, the Blue Jays couldn't deliver a win for the holiday crowd of 37,445.

                PIRATES 7, PADRES 5

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Colin Moran hit his second grand slam of the season and Corey Dickerson and Elias Diaz also homered in Pittsburgh's victory over San Diego.

Moran connected off Tyson Ross (5-6) with two outs in the fifth to put the Pirates ahead 6-3. He also hit a grand slam April 2 in a 5-4 victory against Minnesota

Kyle Crick (1-1) pitched 1 1-3 innings for the win. Felipe Vazquez worked the ninth for his 17th save.

                    — Nationals also are paying Rafael Soriano $2M a year from 2018-24.

                    — Reds are paying Bronson Arroyo $1,363,636 this season and those payments continue thru 2021.

                    Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                    13) Social media can be pretty cool sometimes. Sunday, when John Tavares signed with the Maple Leafs, a disgruntled Islanders’ fan posted a pic of his Tavares jersey and said “I don’t think I can wear this jersey again and it kills me. At nearly 47 years old I should know better, but I am devastated.”

I responded that he shouldn’t burn the jersey, just give it to a kid or put it up on eBay.

Little while later, the guy posts a pic of him putting the jersey into a Goodwill bin, which is great; a kid will get the jersey and enjoy it. Congrats to that guy for making the effort.

                    12) Every time the Red Sox win a game, they post a photo that defines that game on the wall in manager Alex Cora’s lineup. Excellent idea, actually, like a roadmap thru the season.

                    11) Some of the Minnesota Twins had problems with the heat in Chicago this weekend; can you imagine what driving in a NASCAR race, with that big suit on, must be like on a 95-degree day?

Twins scored 25 runs in three games at Wrigley Field and didn’t win any of them; Sunday’s 11-10 final was only close game, and that was only because Minnesota scored five runs in top of the 8th. Dismal weekend for the Twins.

                    10) On July 1, the Mets sent a check for $1,193,248.20 to Bobby Bonilla- they have to do that every year through 2035. If things get much worse for them, the Mets might ask Bonilla to suit up again, and he is 55 now.

                    9) Pirates lost 4-3 in San Diego late Saturday; they had tying run on 3rd with no one out, but with one out, a foul fly was hit down the RF line. Hunter Renfroe caught the ball as he bumped into the wall in foul territory, but Marte never tagged up and couldn’t try to score.

                    8) Gio Gonzalez is having a solid major league career- he is 123-91 in the majors, but he was traded by the White Sox twice, once in December ’05, then again two years later. That does not happen much. White Sox got Jim Thome, Nick Swisher back in the two trades- Gio was part of a package in both deals.

                    7) Sounds like Portland, OR is eager for a major league baseball team, whether it be an expansion team or the Oakland A’s moving north. They’re going to build a 34,000-seat stadium in Portland and they’ve done a great job supporting the NBA’s Trailblazers over the years.

                    6) QB Ben Miles, son of former LSU coach Les Miles, is transferring from Nebraska to Texas A&M. There is some history between Les Miles and Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher; Fisher was an offensive coordinator at LSU working under Miles in 2005, 2006.

                    5) Former Colorado State basketball coach Larry Eustachy got the first of three $250,000 payments Sunday- they are part of his settlement after being fired by the Rams last season.

                    4) Milwaukee Brewers sent SS Orlando Arcia to AAA for the second time this year; the first time they sent him down, his replacement sprained his ankle a couple days later so he came right back to Milwaukee, but with Arcia batting .197, he figures to stay in Colorado Springs for a while now.

                    3) Rays 3, Astros 2— Houston scored seven runs in the four-game series, going 1-3. Tampa Bay is 42-41, and Kevin Cash should be Manager of the Year.

                    2) 97 degrees today at Armadillo World HQ (heat index was 106), might hit 100 tomorrow; not even a dry heat, like you find in Las Vegas. Heat is better than snow, but everything in moderation……

                    1) There is a young lady, maybe 9-10 years old, who was born with a deformed right hand, but now she uses a robotic hand— she is traveling around the country, throwing out the first pitch at various major league ballparks. Philadelphia was her 17th major league ballpark Sunday; good for her!!!

                    • LEADING OFF: Will July be a hit or miss for MLB batters?
                      July 1, 2018

Here's a look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

                      SWING OR MISS?

Many hitters got off to a smashing start in July as Cleveland socked 11 doubles, Baltimore homered four times and the Cubs combined with Minnesota for 21 runs at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Now, we'll see if the trend continues as the weather heats up and the balls fly.

June marked the second time in three months that strikeouts exceeded hits in the major leagues, a pattern that had never occurred until this year. About halfway through the season, there had been 21,090 strikeouts and 20,671 hits.

                      SLAMMIN'

The Reds try to keep socking grand slams when the White Sox come to Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati leads the majors with nine slams and has already tied the single-season franchise record set in 2002.

Jose Peraza hit one Sunday, and pitchers Mike Lorenzen and Anthony DeSclafani recently connected. Eight different Reds have hit grand slams - Adam Duvall is the only player with two.

James Shields, who twice has led the league in homers allowed, starts for Chicago.

                      MOTOWN MEMORIES

Washington ace Max Scherzer (10-4, 2.04 ERA) will face ex-Detroit teammate Rick Porcello (9-3, 3.60 ERA) in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners when the Boston Red Sox visit Nationals Park.

                      HE'S BACK

Shortstop Jorge Polanco is set to rejoin the Twins after serving an 80-game drug suspension. He went 8 for 19 in six rehab games at Triple-A and Class A, and will report to the big league club for the series opener at Milwaukee. The 24-year-old Polanco was a key contributor last season when the Twins earned an AL wild-card spot.

                      SEATTLE SLOW

The Mariners plan to monitor Felix Hernandez and his back stiffness over the next few days. Hernandez pitched five innings Saturday night and earned the victory over Kansas City, but struggled with back pain and wasn't able to sit down in the dugout between innings. The six-time All-Star is 8-6 with a 5.11 ERA in 18 starts this season.

For many years the Detroit Tigers had a feared offensive lineup and outstanding starting pitching. Their biggest issue was the bullpen, something that held them back from accomplishing great things. Now, it is a lack of offense which is their biggest bugaboo. Detroit enters the new week averaging just 3.0 runs per game over the past 10 outings, and that includes a nine-run outburst in Sunday's spoiling of Canada Day in Toronto. It is nothing new, either, as if you go back 24 games to June 5, they're only slightly better at 3.29 runs per contest. As you might imagine, the 'under' has been a frequent happening for the Tigers, going 17-8 across their past 25 tilts.

The Tigers will play an afternoon affair in Toronto on Monday, as the Canada Day festivities spill over into the first day of the week. The 'under' has connected in 13 of the past 18 road games for the Tigers, and is 5-1-1 in the past seven overall when Mike Fiers is on the hill. The under is also 5-2 in their past seven overall against teams with a left-handed starting pitcher. For the Jays, the 'over' has been the rule lately, but the under is 7-3 in their past 10 following a loss, and 4-1 in the past five against a team with a losing overall record. And seven of the past 10 meetings at Rogers Centre have resulted in an 'under' result between these two sides.

                                Looking Ahead

                                Monday, July 2

The novelty of interleague play has certainly worn off over the years, but Monday kicks off a huge slate of AL vs. NL tilts, with many more series starting on Tuesday.

The Rays and Marlins battle for Sunshine State supremacy, and both teams have had a little to crow about lately. The Rays have picked up victories in eight of their past nine games overall, while going 7-1 in their past eight played on a Monday. In addition, they're 5-0 in the past five against teams with a losing overall record, 5-0 in their past five against left-handed starting pitching and 5-1 in their past six road outings vs. LHP. However, they're also a dismal 2-7 in their past nine against NL East foes, 2-7 in their past nine interleague games overall and 2-11 in their past 13 on the road. They're also just 1-4 in Nathan Eovaldi's past five outings. Miami has won seven of their past nine interleague battles vs. RHP, and they're 11-4 in Wei-Yin Chen's past 15 at home. However, they are also 4-9 in their past 13 interleague home games, including just 1-5 in the past six at Marlins Park against the Rays. Tampa is an impressive 9-4 in the past 13 meetings overall. The 'under' is also 12-4-2 in the past 18 meetings in Miami, and 5-2 in the past seven overall.

The Red Sox roll into the nation's capital to battle the Nationals in what could possible be an October preview. It's a good pitching matchup, too, with Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer doing battle. The BoSox are 9-4 over Porcello's past 13 road outings, and 11-1 in his past 12 starts against the National League. They have also been successful in five straight interleague road contests, while going 36-15 in the past 51 vs. NL East clubs. Boston is also 44-18 in the past 62 vs. RHP, and 39-16 in the past 55 on the road against righties. Washington is in a bit of a tailspin, losing five of their past six overall. An interleague home game and a start by Scherzer might be the elixir to cure their ills.

The Nationals are 5-2 in their past seven interleague home games, while going 14-4 in the past 18 games played on a Monday. More importantly, the Nats are 16-5 across Scherzer's past 21 starts and 14-3 in his past 17 when leading his team into a new series. He is working on five days of rest, and the team is 22-6 in Scherzer's past 28 on full rest, too. With two solid pitchers, many might not be thinking 'over', but the over has hit in the past six meetings between these two in D.C., while going 9-2 in the past 11 meetings overall.

                                Weather Report
There is a slight weather concern for the interleague series opener in Cincinnati between the White Sox and Reds. Chances of an isolated thunderstorm are around 30 percent for the first two-thirds of the game, but no postponement is expected in this one.

The weather will cooperate in all other Major League Baseball venues on Monday, and the winds will be rather tranquil, too. The forecast is for winds at or below 10 mph everywhere. Enjoy!

                                Tuesday, July 3
The Orioles take the short jaunt up I-95 (ahh, they'll still probably fly) for an interleague series opener with the Phillies. Alex Cobb hasn't been the shot in the arm the team was hoping for, and the O's are just 3-11 over his past 14 starts and 2-5 in his past seven against a team with a winning overall mark. The O's are a dismal 6-17 across their past 23 interleague games, and 14-43 in the past 57 on the road. In addition, they're 14-43 in the past 57 against a right-handed starter, too. Zach Eflin has been pitching well for the Phillies, and Philadelphia is a perfect 5-0 across his past five outings. Overall the Phils have won four of the past five at hoem, and they're 12-5 in the past 17 vs. RHP.

It isn't John Tavares going from New York to Toronto, but there will be a homecoming on Tuesday when the Mets and Blue Jays square off. Jose Bautista makes his return to Rogers Centre in what should be an emotional return. Mets fans are emotional about the play of the team lately, too -- mostly angry or sad. New York is 1-5 in the past six on the road, 0-7 in their past seven interleague road outings and 3-11 in their past 14 against losing sides. They're also just 7-20 in the past 27 vs. RHP. They'll roll Zack Wheeler out against Marco Estrada, but that could be a disaster. The Mets are 1-10 over Wheeler's past 11 starts, and 0-5 in his past five on five days of rest. Conversely, not counting Monday's game, the Blue Jays are 10-2 over their past 12 at home and 5-1 in the past six interleague battles. While they are 2-7 in Estrada's past nine starts, including 2-5 in the past seven at home, they have posted a 5-1 record in his past six against losing squads and 5-1 in the past six vs. NL East teams, too.

Both Andrew Heaney of the Angels and Wade LeBlanc of the Mariners were tuned up in their most recent outing. They'll look to right the ship againts each other at Safeco on Tuesday. The Angels are 0-8 in their past eight vs. LHP, and 3-11 in the past 14 on the road after a blistering start away from home earlier in the season. They're also just 2-6 in Heaney's past eight assignments, and 3-13 in his past 16 on the road. They have won just once over his past five inside the division, too. The M's have won five of the past six overall, and they're 20-6 in their past 26 in SoDo. More impressively, the Mariners are a sizzling 12-0 in LeBlanc's past 12 starts at home, while going 13-3 in his past 16 overall, including 4-1 in the past five inside the division.

                                Weather Report
It is shaping up as a great early-week forecast in Major League Baseball. There are no precipitation threats on Tuesday, although wind will be a factor in Oakkland. The wind will be humming from home plate to the right-center field power alley at a 14-17 mph clip, so watch for a potential 'over' there with wind-aided extra-base hits. Elsewhere, no precip and winds all less than 10 mph, or 16 kilometers per hour, in hono(u)r of Canada Day.
