    • Saturday’s 6-pack

Six major leaguers who have had the most teammates:

      — Terry Mulholland 791 teammates (11 teams)

      — Edwin Jackson 763 teammates (13 teams)

      — Matt Stairs 725 teammates (12 teams)

      — Rickey Henderson 725 teammates (9 teams)

      — Carlos Beltran 719 teammates (7 teams)

      — LaTroy Hawkins 703 teammates (11 teams)

      Quote of the Day
“I think the Packers probably got better, maybe more than any team I saw this offseason. If the secondary is a little bit better, I think they’re the team to beat this year.”
      Tony Romo

      Saturday’s quiz
What two current major league managers have managed 1,000+ games for two different teams?

      Friday’s quiz
Charlie Manuel managed the Phillies when they won the 2008 World Series.

      Thursday’s quiz
Edwin Jackson has pitched for 13 major league teams; he pitched his no-hitter for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

      Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

      13) Jimmy Garoppolo’s salary cap hit this season is $37M, highest in NFL; next-highest cap hit is Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford, at $26.5M. Tom Brady’s? $22M.

      12) Dak Prescott’s cap hit is the lowest among QB’s, at $725,848.

      11) Back in 1985, the highest-paid baseball player was Mike Schmidt ($2,130,000); these days, the Red Sox have a utility guy named Brock Holt who makes $2,225,000.

      10) Boston acquired OF/DH Steve Pearce from the Blue Jays, giving Toronto a Class A shortstop in exchange. Pearce is 5-15 with two HR’s vs Masahiro Tanaka, 8-27 vs CC Sabathia.

He batted cleanup in his Boston debut and went 2-3 with a double.

      9) Nolan Arenado has homered 10 times in the first inning this year, most in MLB.

      8) From 2013-15, Michigan State’s football team was +46 in turnovers; they went 36-5 in those three years.

Last two years, Spartans are -2 in turnovers, going 13-12.

      7) Maryland Terrapins have an offensive line with 105 returning starts, so they’ll have a lot of experience, but the Terps are on their fourth OL coach in four years. Kids have heard a lot of different voices in their careers.

      6) Marlins 8, Mets 2— Miami is 27-29 when JT Realmuto starts, 6-21 when he does not.

      5) Bryce Harper is a free agent after the season; coming into Friday’s game, he is batting .188 in June, with 6 RBI in 95 PA. He is hitting .220 for the season, after hitting .319 LY. Unless he has a big second half of the season, it is going to be an interesting (and expensive??) winter for Harper and his agent.

Harper homered in the Nationals’ rout of Philly Friday night, knocking in three runs.

      4) Tim Tebow made it to the AA Eastern League All-Star Game; 30-year old Tebow is batting .261 with five homers, 30 RBI. Not a lot of 30-year olds in the Eastern League.

      3) Las Vegas Summer League starts next Friday; Miami Heat’s team might have a small home court edge, with three former UNLV Rebels on their roster. Derrick Jones Jr, Ike Nwamu and Rashad Vaughn will all suit up for the Heat next month.

Indiana Pacers have three UCLA guys on their team; Bryce Alford, Aaron Holiday and PJ Leaf.

      2) Arizona Diamondbacks went 18-7 in April, 8-19 in May and are 19-7 in June.

stats.com points out that Arizona joins the 1893 Pirates, 1956 White Sox as the only teams ever to go 10+ games over .500, 10+ games under .500 and 10+ games over .500 in three straight months.

      1) All this stuff going on with Justice Kennedy, his son the banker and the current state of affairs in Washington DC, probably has people who write movie scripts relaxing in their offices, sipping cool drinks while taking notes off of CNN, with their feet up on their desks. These movies and their sequels will write themselves.

        The Division Bell

The first-place teams are taking big-time advantage of their cellar-dwelling divisional mates, especially in the American League. The Red Sox and Yankees are both jockeying for first place. They're obviously both fine teams and World Series contenders, but even more so facing the likes of the Blue Jays and Orioles. The Jays have managed a subpar 12-20 record against the AL East, while the O's have the worst divisional record winning percentage at just .281. It's a good thing the Birds aren't in the AL West, however, as they're 0-14 against the Angels, Astros, Athletics, Mariners and Rangers this season. On the flip side, the Indians are 8 1/2 games clear in the AL Central. However, they're under .500 against the East and West, going 4-6 and 8-12. However, they're an impressive 25-13 insde their own division. In other words, bet the Indians inside the Central and fade them elsewhere.

        DIVISIONAL RECORDS
        Team Record Team Record
        Arizona 20-10 (.667) Baltimore 9-23 (.281)
        Atlanta 27-14 (.658) Chicago White Sox 13-25 (.342)
        Boston 25-10 (.714) Cincinnati 12-25 (.324)
        Cleveland 25-13 (.658) Miami 8-15 (.348)
        Houston 25-10 (.714) Oakland 12-25 (.324)

        Looking Ahead

        Saturday, June 30

The Giants and Diamondbacks will continue their divisional series in the desert, as Dereck Rodriguez squares off against Shelby Miller. The San Francisco rookie, son of Hall of Famer Ivan 'Pudge' Rodriguez, is coming off of a quality start and no-decision against the Padres last time out. He has been solid at home, but he has yet to get his footing on the road. Pudge Jr. is 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA across 12 2/3 innings over two starts and a relief appearance on the road this season. The opposition is hitting .321 against him on the road this season. Miller made his first start of the season after reconstructive elbow surgery, allowing five earned runs, six hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings in Miami on Monday. The 'over' is 14-3 in the past 17 for San Francisco against right-handed starters, while the 'over' is 6-1 in the past seven for the Snakes vs. RHP.

The Red Sox and Yankees will continue their AL East battle, and the Red Sox look to avenge an 8-1 whipping in the series opener in the Bronx on Friday. The Red Sox are 4-1 over their past five games against a team with a winning record, while going 38-15 in the past 53 inside the division. They're 5-1 in their past six games with Sale on the hill against an AL East club, and they're 43-17 in their past 60 vs. RHP. The Yankees counter with Sonny Gray, and they're just 2-5 over his past seven against teams with a winning overall mark while going 0-4 in the past four divisional contests. The Yankees are 20-7 in the past 27 at home vs. LHP, while going 21-7 in their past 28 overall against southpaws. The Red Sox are now 1-5 in the past six meetings at Yankee Stadium.

Also in NL West action, German Marquez of the Rockies and Kenta Maeda of the Dodgers butt heads at Dodger Stadium. Maeda has posted a 4.30 ERA in five starts and a relief appearance on the road over 29 1/3 innings, but he has a sparkling 2.79 ERA in eight assignments at home with 48 strikeouts in just 38 2/3 innings at Chavez Ravine. Marquez also has shocking splits, or perhaps not so shocking since half of his games are a mile above sea level. He is 2-5 with a 7.93 ERA and a .345 opponent batting average in nine home starts, while going 3-3 with a solid 3.07 ERA and .214 opponent batting average on the road. The last time Marquez worked at Dodger Stadium, he allowed one earned run, two hits and two walks with five strikeotus over seven innings in a win May 21.

        Weather Report

The wind will be blowing out at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon, gusting 10-13 mph out to left field while the heat index will be flirting with the 100-degree mark. Wind will also be an issue at the Oakland Coliseum, blowing 11-15 mph out to the right-center field power alley.

Wind will also be an issue in the early-evening games, blowing from right to left at Busch Stadium II from 10-13 mph with heat indices again flirting with triple digits. In Arlington, the White Sox and Rangers will be battling wind, too, but it will be blowing in from right field to home plate at a 14-17 mph clip. Other than that, there is no threat of precipitation anywhere and the other venues have wind under 10 mph or controlled conditions.

        Sunday, July 1

The Rangers will host the White Sox, with Cole Hamels taking the ball. He is 1-5 with a 5.14 ERA with a .268 opponent batting average with 14 homers allowed in 49 innings. On the road he is 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA and .203 opponent average across eight road outings. Perhaps he'll be able to get well against the White Sox, as they're just 12-26 on the road with a minus-105 run differential, fourth-worst in the majors.

The Red Sox and Yankees wrap up their rivalry series under the lights and on national television. Shocking, as this might be the first time these teams have played on ESPN, right?

David Price will be on the hill for the Red Sox looking to avenge an early-season ripping from the Bronx Bombers. Price was tagged for four earned runs, three hits and two walks in just one inning of work in a loss at Fenway against the Yankees on April 11. He has been much better lately, however, winning seven of his past eight decisions while going 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA in five outings in June, all quality starts. The Yankees counter with Luis Severino, who brings a 12-2 record, 2.10 ERA and .201 opponent batting average into the game. He also has 132 strikeouts over just 111 2/3 innings across 17 starts. He has been money at home, going 7-0 with a 1.83 ERA with 69 strikeouts over 59 innings across nine starts with a .187 opponent batting average. However, he is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two outings against the BoSox this season, lasting just 11 total innings while Boston is hitting .298 against him.

Andrew Benintendi has been Severino's kryptonite, going 9-for-19 (.474) with two doubles, a triple, two homers and 10 RBI with a 1.524 OPS. Mookie Betts is also 7-for-22 (.318) with three doubles and two RBI with an .855 OPS. Price has struggled against Didi Gregorius, as he is 12-for-28 (.429) with two doubles, a homer, five RBI and a 1.055 OPS. The good news for Price is that Gary Sanchez is sidelined with a Grade I groin strain, as the backstop has five homers in just 12 career at-bats against Price. Giancarlo Stanton hasn't seen much of the veteran southpaw, but he is 4-for-11 (.364) with a double, a triple and three RBI.

        Weather Report

The weather on Canada Day will be HOT with a capital H. In Baltimore, temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-90s with heat indices in triple digits. The temperatures will be the same in Cincinnati, and there is a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms which might interrupt the start of the ball game. It won't last long enough for a postponement, however. The Nationals-Phillies, Braves-Cards and Twins-Cubs will all be playing during the daytime, and they'll each be dealing with mid-90's temperatures and heat indices in triple digits.

In Arlington, the wind will be blowing in for a second straight day. It will be a hot wind gusting from 13-16 mph from right field to home plate. It will be much more temperate in Oakland, and the winds will be blowing out from 11-15 mph to the right-center field power alley for the Indians-Athletics.

                  • Blue Jays hand Tigers 11th loss in a row
                    June 30, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Chris Sale pitched his latest Bronx gem, Rafael Devers went 5 for 5 with a first-inning grand slam and the Boston Red Sox held the New York Yankees to two hits during an 11-0 rout Saturday night to take back baseball's best record.

Sale (8-4) allowed only Giancarlo Stanton's clean single over seven innings, striking out 11. He has a 1.73 career ERA against the Yankees, best among pitchers with at least 10 starts against them since 1920. His ERA at Yankee Stadium is 1.86, second only to Seattle's Felix Hernandez among pitchers with five starts.

Boston is a major league-leading 56-28, just ahead of the Yankees at 53-27. New York held the majors' best mark by percentage points after winning Friday's series opener 8-1.

Yankee Stadium hosted a season-high sellout of 47,125, and the crowd gave starter Sonny Gray (5-6) an earful after he gave up six runs in 2 1/3 innings. The right-hander dropped to 0-4 with a 9.35 ERA against Boston since being acquired by New York from Oakland last season.

                    BLUE JAYS 4, TIGERS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Smoak led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run and Toronto handed Detroit its 11th straight loss.

Smoak connected against reliever Joe Jimenez (3-1) for his 11th homer of the season.

Seyunghwan Oh (4-2) worked one inning for the win. Randal Grichuk also homered for the Blue Jays, who have won 10 of 11 at home.

John Hicks hit a solo homer in the Detroit second off Sam Gaviglio and Nick Castellanos made it 3-0 with a two-run shot in the third, his 12th.

Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer to cap Toronto's three-run fifth that tied the score.

                    RAYS 5, ASTROS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Wilson Ramos drove in four runs in the first two innings against Justin Verlander, and Tampa Bay won for the seventh time in eight games.

Matt Duffy finished with three hits, including two in the first two innings, to help the Rays move to .500 (41-41) for the first time since June 1. Tampa Bay has held opponents to two runs or fewer in five straight games for only the second time in franchise history.

Ramos gave the Rays the lead with a two-run double in the first, and made it 5-0 with a two-run single in the second.

Alex Bregman got the Astros on the board with a two-run homer in the sixth off Vidal Nuno (2-0).

Verlander (9-4) gave up a season-high five runs in a season-low five innings, giving up nine hits while striking out eight.

Sergio Romo pitched ninth for his seventh save in 11 opportunities.

                    PHILLIES 3, NATIONALS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Hit on his pitching arm by a line drive, Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez made a dazzling throw with his left hand, and Philadelphia overcame an injury to its starting pitcher to bea Washington.

Velasquez was struck in the forearm by Adam Eaton's liner in the second inning. He dropped his glove, hustled to retrieve the ball as it deflected toward third base, and unleashed a strong throw with his opposite arm that nipped the speedy Eaton at first for the final out.

Velasquez then dropped to the ground, writhing in pain and was pulled from the game with a bruise.

Victor Arano (1-0) followed with two scoreless innings of relief. Rookie Seranthony Dominguez pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save in his eighth chances.

Odubel Herrera homered and Jorge Alfaro and Aaron Altherr had RBI doubles for the Phillies. Anthony Rendon homered for the Nationals.

Jeremy Hellickson (2-1), back after being sidelined since June 4 with a right hamstring strain, allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

                    ROCKIES 3, DODGERS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - German Marquez pitched two-hit ball over eight innings and Ian Desmond homered to help Colorado beat Los Angeles.

Marquez (6-8) retired his first 15 batters before Enrique Hernandez connected for a home run off the left-field foul pole leading off the sixth. The right-hander struck out nine and walked none after entering with a 5.53 ERA, third-worst among qualified National League starters.

Adam Ottavino pitched the ninth for his second save.

The Rockies closed out June with consecutive victories over the Dodgers after getting swept by Los Angeles in a three-game series at Coors Field to begin the month. Colorado finished June with an 11-16 record.

Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda (5-5) gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits over seven innings and lost for the first time in four June starts.

                    MARLINS 5, METS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Brian Anderson hit a two-run homer off Jacob deGrom and Miami climbed out of last place in the NL East.

For the second game in a row, a Marlins pitcher beat the Mets while making his first major league start. Pablo Lopez (1-0) allowed two runs in six innings in his big league debut.

The Mets (32-48) lost for the 10th time in 11 games and fell into last place for the first time this year. They finished 5-21 this month for the worst June in franchise history, and they've plummeted from 10 games over .500 to 15 under at an earlier date than any team in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Meanwhile, the rebuilding Marlins (34-50) went 14-14 in June, their best month this season.

DeGrom (5-4), who departed after six innings trailing 3-2, fell to 1-4 in his past five starts.

Drew Steckenrider pitched a perfect eighth, and Kyle Barraclough earned his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

                    CUBS 14, TWINS 9

CHICAGO (AP) - Minnesota's Eddie Rosario, Bobby Wilson and Max Kepler all left early because of heat illness on a scorching afternoon at Wrigley Field in the Cubs' win.

Rosario homered in the top of the fifth inning, then was pulled from left field shortly after fielding a hit by Anthony Rizzo in the bottom half. The Cubs said it was 96 degrees at the time with a heat index of 107 - that's a calculation of how hot it actually feels, with the humidity factored in.

Jason Heyward had four of the Cubs' 20 hits, Ben Zobrist had three RBIs and Chicago had a pair of five-run innings. The Cubs rallied from 3-0 and 7-4 deficits and have scored at least 10 runs in three straight games for the first time since April 2003.

Albert Almora Jr. had three hits and drove in two runs as the Cubs won their third in a row.

With the score tied 9-9, Chicago broke it open with a five-run seventh with Heyward's bloop single with the bases loaded off reliever Trevor Hildenberger (1-2) giving the Cubs the lead.

Justin Wilson (2-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

                    ATHLETICS 7, INDIANS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Journeyman Edwin Jackson earned his first win with Oakland, pitching neatly into the seventh inning as the Athletics got their season-high sixth straight victory.

Matt Olson, Dustin Fowler and Josh Phegley homered to help the A's win for the 12th time in 14 games. They've won seven straight against Cleveland and nine of their last 10 against the Indians in Oakland.

Jackson (1-0), who signed a minor league contract with the A's on June 6 and is now with his record-tying 13th major league team, gave up only two hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The A's trailed 2-0 going into the sixth, when Franklin Barreto became their first baserunner with a leadoff double against Adam Plutko (4-2). Phegley followed with his second home run and Oakland took a 3-2 lead when Fowler scored from first on Mark Canha's double.

Francisco Lindor hit his 20th homer and Jose Ramirez hit his 24th in the Cleveland fourth.

The A's broke the game open in the eighth, when Fowler and Olson homered in a four-run inning.

                    ANGELS 6, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Albert Pujols' RBI double highlighted a five-run eighth inning and Los Angeles handed Baltimore its seventh straight loss.

Playing their 3,000th game under manager Mike Scioscia, the Angels trailed 2-1 before using three hits, three walks and a hit batter to take control against the free-falling Orioles.

After Mychal Givens (0-6) issued a pair of one-out walks, Pujols tied it with his 632nd career double, tying David Ortiz for 10th place on the all-time list. An intentional walk followed, and the go-ahead run scored when Chris Young hit into a force play at third base.

Tanner Scott hit Martin Maldonado with a pitch to force in a run, and David Fletcher capped the uprising with a two-run single.

The major league-worst Orioles have five losing streaks of at least six games, are 0-15 against the AL West and have lost 17 of 18 at home.

Justin Anderson (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn the win.

                    REDS 12, BREWERS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Reliever Michael Lorenzen hit the second grand slam by a Reds pitcher in a week, and Cincinnati snapped a seven game losing streak.

Lorenzen's pinch-hit grand slam off Jacob Barnes in the seventh inning completed an eight-run rally - Cincinnati's biggest of the season. Lorenzen's fifth career homer drew a curtain call from the crowd of 24,640.

The reliever has homered in his last three at-bats. He also connected Friday during Milwaukee's 8-2 win.

Tyler Mahle struck out a career-high 12 batters in 5 2/3 innings, three shy of the Reds' rookie record. David Hernandez (3-0) pitched the top of the seventh.

The Reds fanned 18 batters, a club record for a nine-inning game.

Mike Zagurski (0-1) took the loss in his first major league appearance since 2013.

Sunday’s List of 13; Happy Canada Day, everyone!!!!

                          13) Modern baseball; Friday night in Oakland, the Indians brought in lefty Oliver Perez to face a lefty hitter with a man on second. Predictably, the A’s sent up a righty hitter instead and Terry Francona ordered the righty hitter intentionally walked.

With another righty up next, Francona took Perez out and brought a righty in, creating the unique situation where a pitcher is removed from the game without throwing a pitch or even a pickoff throw— technically, the intentional walk counts as a batter faced.

                          12) As the owner of a fantasy baseball team, I try and find players wherever/whenever; Marlins brought up a pitcher named Pablo Lopez to make his MLB debut Saturday.

Lopez starts the game by striking out Brandon Nimmo on three pitches; I scramble to get to MILB.com to look up his minor league history. Before I find his page, Jose Bautista homers to left field, then Michael Conforto gets a hit. My enthusiasm wanes.

                          11) Lopez is 22 years old. looks like he was rushed to the majors; this was his first season in AA, and he was really good, going 1-2, 0.62 in eight starts in the AA Southern League.

So the Marlins promoted him to AAA and he was 1-1, 3.38 in four starts there. 62.1 IP above A ball is a little bit fast to get to the big leagues.

Lopez wound up throwing six innings, allowing only two solo homers; a solid debut for the kid.

                          10) Hunter Wendelstedt umpired the plate at Wrigley Field Saturday; not to say it was hot in Chicago, but he umpired with a wet towel draped around his neck. Never saw that before, but it seems like it was the smart thing to do.

                          9) Astros are 10-15 in one-run games, 45-15 in their other games.
Mariners are 25-11 in one-run games, 28-20 in their other games.

                          8) Kansas City Royals are 13-15 vs lefty starting pitchers, 12-42 vs righty starters.
Toronto Blue Jays are 11-21 vs lefty starters, 28-22 vs righthanders.

                          7) Enes Kanter has played seven years in the NBA, scoring 11.7 ppg; last three years, he scored 12.7, 14.3, 14.1 ppg, all while playing 21.0, 21.3, 25.8 mpg.

Kanter has earned $72,889,846 in his NBA career, will tack on an additional $18,622,514 this coming season. In his last two seasons with the Thunder (2015-16, 20-16-17), he started one freaking game!!!

Kanter shot at least 54.5% from the floor the last four years. He must be a good teammate.

                          6) Colorado Rockies called up OF Raimel Tapia, optioned their Opening Day starting pitcher Jon Gray, to AAA Albuquerque. Tapia is a leadoff-type hitter; will they give him a chance to play every day? Hope so, I’ve had him stashed on my fantasy team for three years now.

                          5) Star pitchers Jacob deGrom and Corey Kluber both played college baseball at Stetson.

deGrom played shortstop his first two years for the Hatters; he hit .243 and .258, then added pitching to his resume, going 4-5, 4.48 in 17 games (82.1 IP), while hitting .263. He pitched one inning in those first two seasons.

                          4) Mets’ TV guy Gary Cohen is very good at calling games and he wants the Mets to win but he is fair and questions why certain things happen.

Mets have a 22-year old 1B named Dominic Smith who hasn’t started the last three games against righty starters, even though Smith bats lefty. Cohen openly asked on the air why Smith wasn’t starting— “If he isn’t starting, then why is he here?”

You don’t get stuff like that on most local baseball broadcasts.

Smith is hitting .203 in his first 230 major league PA; he went to Juniper Serra HS in California, same high school that Tom Brady and Barry Bonds went to.

                          3) Lakers’ G Lonzo Ball has a torn meniscus in his left knee, is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in September.

                          2) Reds’ pitcher Michael Lorenzen homered again Saturday, now has three pinch-hit HRs in his career. The only other pitcher to do that in the last 60 years: Gary Peters, who hit four from 1964-71, playing in the pre-DH era for the White Sox, Red Sox.

                          1) Happy Canada Day to all our friends north of the border!!!
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....

                            • LEADING OFF: Steamy starts, Price-Severino at Yankee Stadium
                              June 30, 2018

Here's a look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

                              HIGH HEAT

It's expected to be a hot box at many ballparks, with game-time temperatures likely to climb over 100 degrees in Texas for White Sox-Rangers, near triple digits in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Yankee Stadium, and into the mid-90s in Chicago and Cincinnati. On Saturday, three Twins left early with heat illness at Wrigley Field.

''Drink more water, try to stay by the fan. I try to keep a towel by my side and make sure I catch my breath,'' White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson said. ''It's a mind thing. You can't think too much about it. If you do, it'll eat you up.''

Angels manager Mike Scioscia saw starter Tyler Skaggs wilt after five innings in Baltimore. Scioscia was already anticipating another steamy afternoon.

''These guys will be hydrating tonight and I know Deck McGuire, the starter, was hydrating all day just in anticipation of the heat,'' he said.

Said Orioles skipper Buck Showalter: ''There's a big bulletin board the guys see every day reminding them of the things they need to do to hydrate properly. ... We're taking a lot of precautions.''

                              RIVALRY NIGHT

The Red Sox and Yankees play in prime time, with stars David Price (9-5, 3.66 ERA) and Luis Severino (12-2, 2.10) on the mound. New York entered Saturday a major league-best 19-5 against left-handed starting pitchers, and its .820 OPS against lefties was best in the majors. The left-handed Price has been tough lately, though, going 7-1 with a 2.72 ERA in nine starts since being diagnosed with a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome that caused him to miss a scheduled turn against the Yankees in early May.

                              POWER PITCHER

The biggest bat off Cincinnati's bench might be in the bullpen. No, really. Reds reliever Michael Lorenzen has homered in three straight at-bats after connecting for a pinch-hit grand slam Saturday in a 12-3 victory over Milwaukee. He also went deep Friday during Milwaukee's 8-2 win. ''We treat him as a position player. We covered him in scouting meetings. We're going to have to make some adjustments,'' Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. The last major league pitcher to homer in three consecutive at-bats was Colorado's Mike Hampton in 2001. For the season, Lorenzen is 4 for 6 with three homers and six RBIs. His fifth career homer was the second grand slam by a Reds pitcher in a week - starter Anthony DeSclafani also hit one against the Chicago Cubs.

                              STINGY STUFF

The surging Rays (41-41) send left-hander Blake Snell (10-4, 2.31 ERA) to the mound against Charlie Morton (10-1, 2.54) and the World Series champion Astros in the finale of a four-game series. Snell didn't give up a hit until the seventh inning of an 11-0 win over Washington on Monday night. Tampa Bay has limited opponents to two runs or fewer in five straight games, and seven out of eight during a tough stretch against the Yankees, Nationals and Astros. Morton has won three straight starts and hasn't permitted an earned run in his last two. Houston first baseman Yuli Gurriel (paternity leave) is expected back in the lineup.

                              CANADIAN CURRENCY

Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ (10-3, 3.62 ERA) faces the skidding Tigers on Canada Day in Toronto. An expected trade target as the July 31 deadline approaches, Happ has won six straight decisions and is unbeaten in eight outings. Detroit has lost 11 games in a row overall - and 12 of 14 in Toronto. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have won 10 of 11 at home.

                              BAY AREA BOOM

Jed Lowie and the Oakland Athletics (46-38) try for their seventh straight victory when they host AL Central-leading Cleveland. The surprising A's have won 12 of 14 overall. They've also taken seven in a row against Cleveland, and nine of the last 10 meetings in Oakland.

                              SUMMER WINS

Chicago Cubs left-hander Jon Lester (10-2, 2.18 ERA) hopes to start a new month the same way he ended the last one. After going 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA in five June starts, Lester pitches against Lance Lynn (5-6, 4.81) and the Minnesota Twins in the finale of the three-game interleague series.

                              WESTWARD NO

The Baltimore Orioles are 0-15 against AL West opponents this year after losing to the Angels 6-2 on Saturday. The O's have dropped seven in a row overall, 17 of 18 at Camden Yards and own the worst record in the majors at 23-59. They'll try again when Kevin Gausman (3-6, 4.20 ERA) pitches at home against Los Angeles righty Deck McGuire, who makes his third major league start. Gausman has lost his last four decisions and hasn't completed seven innings in any of his past eight starts.
