        • Bryant returns to Cubs, Indians seek relief
          July 11, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors on Wednesday:

          BRYANT BACK WITH CUBBIES

Kris Bryant flew to the Bay Area on Tuesday night and is hoping to play in the Cubs' series finale against the Giants. Bryant has been out since June 23 with inflammation in his left shoulder. He played rehab games for Double-A Tennessee on Monday and Tuesday before making his way to AT&T Park. The 2016 NL MVP is hitting .280 with nine homers and 36 RBIs in 66 games this season. Johnny Cueto will try to bounce back for San Francisco after allowing 10 hits and five runs in his return from the DL last week.

          POORLY `PENNED

The Indians return to the park following an excruciating loss Tuesday, when relievers Cody Allen and Dan Otero combined to allow seven two-out runs in the ninth inning of a 7-4 loss to Cincinnati. Trevor Bauer opened the game with eight scoreless innings for Cleveland, but Allen allowed six runs in the ninth and Otero allowed another before the Reds finally made the last out on the basepaths. Cleveland's bullpen entered Tuesday with a 5.13 ERA, better only than the Rockies (5.28) and Royals (5.35). The Reds try to complete a surprising three-game sweep behind Tyler Mahle (7-6, 3.66).

          ARMED AND READY

Mets ace Jacob deGrom makes his final scheduled start before heading to the All-Star Game when New York tries to split a four-game series with first-place Philadelphia. Despite leading the majors with a 1.79 ERA, deGrom (5-4) is 1-4 in his last nine starts and the Mets have won only two of those games. Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez (5-8, 4.69) is expected back from the 10-day disabled list after recovering from a bruised forearm. Velasquez was hit just below the right elbow by a line drive on June 30. He retrieved the ball and threw it left-handed to first base to get the out, falling to the ground in pain immediately afterward.

          STRUGGLING SHELBY

Arizona Diamondbacks starter Shelby Miller makes his fourth start since coming back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander will face the Rockies at Coors Field and try to improve on his first three starts, during which he's allowed 20 hits and 14 earned runs in 14 innings. One positive note for the 27-year-old Miller has been his 18 strikeouts.

          • Cubs, Giants hoping to get bats back
            July 11, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO -- Teams struggling to score runs in the first two games of the series hope to get key bats back in the lineup Wednesday afternoon when the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants wrap up their three-game set.

Right-hander Johnny Cueto (3-1, 1.95), pushed back a day to get an extra day of rest before what will be just his second start since April, is expected to duel Cubs lefty Mike Montgomery (3-3, 3.68) in the rubber game of a series in which the teams have split 2-1 and 2-0 games.

The Cubs managed a shutout win Tuesday despite getting only six hits. A throwing error by Giants catcher Nick Hundley broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning.

Hundley was playing because Buster Posey was relegated to pinch-hitting duties because of a sore hip. Posey has given up his spot in the All-Star Game next week in hopes that four days off, coupled with a cortisone shot, will resolve the issue.

In the meantime, Posey is expected to start in Wednesday's quick turnaround from a night game to an afternoon affair.

The Giants also are being cautious with Cueto, who sprained his right elbow during a brilliant five-start opening to the season in April.

He returned to allow four runs in the first inning Thursday against St. Louis but settled down to give up just one more run in a five-inning, 76-pitch outing.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced before Tuesday's game that, like Posey, the hope is to reappear from the All-Star break with a healthy Cueto. He will get at least eight days off after Wednesday's start.

I think you know we try to give our guys the extra day," Bochy said. "Every start is going to dictate that, when he needs an extra day, if he works harder. If not, he'll go every fifth day."

Cueto has a 9-9 record in 25 career starts against the Cubs. One Chicago hitter with whom he has struggled over the years is Kris Bryant, who is 5-for-10 with a walk and hit by pitch in 12 plate appearances -- playoffs included.

Bryant missed the first two games of the series while on an injury-rehab assignment at Double-A Tennessee. He hasn't played for the Cubs since June 22 because of inflammation in his left shoulder.

But Bryant was given the green light to be reinstated from the disabled list after Tuesday's minor-league appearance. He boarded a late flight to San Francisco and is a candidate to start Wednesday.

"He had a good day," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Tuesday's report on Bryant. "We hoped it would be able to work out this way, and it looks like it's going to."

Montgomery has never beaten the Giants, going 0-1 with a 3.78 ERA in four games (two starts).

His last start against San Francisco came in 2016, a game in which he allowed a home run to Hunter Pence.

                • B]Nationals fall back to .500 with shutout loss to Pittsburgh
                  July 11, 2018
                  [/B]

DENVER (AP) Colorado right-hander German Marquez homered against Arizona infielder Daniel Descalso, helping the Rockies pound the Diamondbacks 19-2 on Wednesday night.

Marquez (8-8) pitched six innings of two-run ball. He connected for his first career homer in the fifth.

Marquez's drive to center was the first homer by a pitcher off a position player since Mike LaCoss went deep for the Giants against San Diego's Dane Iorg on June 23, 1986, according to STATS.

Carlos Gonzalez homered twice for the Rockies and drove in six runs. Charlie Blackmon and Ian Desmond also went deep.

Arizona right-hander Shelby Miller (0-4) allowed five runs in one inning before departing with right elbow tightness.

                  MARLINS 5, BREWERS 4, 12 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Milwaukee slugger Jesus Aguilar was added to the NL All-Star team and then validated the selection with three hits and three RBIs, but the Brewers went 3 for 16 with runners in scoring position.

Starlin Castro singled home the winning run for Miami with one out in the 12th. Elieser Hernandez (1-5) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.

Aguilar learned he won the online vote for the final NL roster spot, and he'll also compete in the Home Run Derby next week in Washington.

Miami took two of three in the series from the NL Central leaders. Jorge Lopez (0-1) got the loss.

                  PIRATES 2, NATIONALS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starling Marte hit a two-run homer for Pittsburgh, and Trevor Williams combined with four relievers on a five-hitter.

Williams (7-7) won for just the second time in his past 10 starts, permitting four hits in five innings.

Gio Gonzalez (6-6) remained winless since May 28 despite allowing just two runs in six innings.

Washington lost for the 11th time in 16 games and fell back to .500.

Richard Rodriguez, Edgar Santana, Kyle Crick and Felipe Vazquez followed Williams with one scoreless inning each. Vazquez earned his 20th save.

                  TWINS 8, ROYALS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer, going deep for the second straight game to give Minnesota a boost on its way to a win over Kansas City.

Lance Lynn (7-7) recovered from a three-run homer by Salvador Perez in the first inning to win his second straight start for the Twins, who used the bottom third of their lineup to launch rallies in the second and the fourth against Royals starter Burch Smith (0-1).

Mike Moustakas homered twice for the Royals, who have the fewest home runs in MLB, but took the Twins deep five times over the last two games of this series. Kansas City has lost 23 of its past 27 games.

                  RAYS 4, TIGERS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - C.J. Cron's three-run home run in the seventh inning carried Tampa Bay Rays to its fifth straight win, a victory over Detroit.

Cron's 18th homer came off Jordan Zimmermann after singles by Kevin Kiermaier and Matt Duffy.

The Tigers, who struck out 14 times against five Tampa Bay pitchers, have lost four straight and 18 of 22.

Rookie left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (8-4) got the win after giving up one hit in three innings of relief. Sergio Romo pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 16 opportunities.

Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann (4-1) gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

                  GIANTS 5, CUBS 4, 13 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Buster Posey singled off the right-field wall in the 13th inning for his fifth career game-ending hit, sending San Francisco past Chicago.

Brandon Belt drew a two-out walk from James Norwood (0-1). Andrew McCutchen then singled to bring up Posey, who ended the 4-hour, 30-minute game with San Francisco's first run since scoring four in the first.

Dereck Rodriguez (4-1) pitched three scoreless innings for the win. He also had three of San Francisco's 16 strikeouts.

Cubs slugger Kris Bryant hit a two-run homer in his return from the disabled list, and All-Star Javier Baez tied the game with a solo homer to start the seventh.

                  RED SOX 4, RANGERS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Chris Sale struck out 12 in seven innings of shutout ball in his final start before the All-Star Game, and major league batting leader Mookie Betts had two more hits to lead Boston to its ninth straight victory over Texas.

Sale (10-4) allowed six hits and walked one to win his fifth straight decision and move the Red Sox 36 games above .500 for the first time since Bucky Dent homered into the net above the Green Monster in a one-game playoff to settle the 1978 AL East title.

Elvis Andrus had three hits for the Rangers, who struck out 18 times to lose for the fifth time in six games. Bartolo Colon (5-7) allowed four runs.

Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 28th save, and his 19th in a row.

                  YANKEES 9, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Greg Bird hit his first career grand slam to back a dominating pitching performance by Sonny Gray, and New York beat the Baltimore for a split of the four-game series.

Rookie Tyler Wade and Austin Romine also homered for the Yankees, and Giancarlo Stanton had four hits.

Facing Dylan Bundy (6-9) in the third inning, Bird launched a drive off the right-field foul pole to put New York up 5-0. It was the second night in a row he homered and had four RBIs.

Gray (6-7) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out eight over six innings.

                  METS 3, PHILLIES 0, 10 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Pinch-hitter Brandon Nimmo launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning and New York got another dominant outing from All-Star Jacob deGrom in a 3-0 victory over Philadelphia Phillies.

Amed Rosario, who had two of New York's four hits, began the winning rally with a two-out double off Mark Leiter Jr. (0-1) - the first hit for the Mets since the fourth inning. Jose Reyes walked and Nimmo drove Leiter's next pitch well over the wall in right-center for his first career walk-off RBIs.

In his final scheduled start before heading to the All-Star Game next Tuesday in Washington, deGrom scattered five hits and matched his longest outing of the season. He struck out seven and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.68.

Robert Gsellman (6-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

                  WHITE SOX 4, CARDINALS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Rodon pitched three-hit, shutout ball into the eighth inning to outduel Luke Weaver and lead Chicago to a victory over St. Louis.

Rodon (2-3) allowed only two singles and a double while walking two and striking out a season-high seven though 7 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old left-hander, who spent the first two months of 2018 on the disabled list rehabbing from shoulder surgery, sparkled in just his seventh start this season.

Joakim Soria got the final four outs for his 13th save in 16 chances.

Weaver (5-8) allowed one run on three hits and fanned seven his second straight impressive start.

                  Francisco.

                  BRAVES 9, BLUE JAYS 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Ozzie Albies snapped Atlanta's power drought with two homers, and the Braves beat Toronto to move back into a tie for the NL East lead.

Mike Foltynewicz (7-5) and the Braves led 7-0 before Toronto scored five runs in the seventh on Justin Smoak's leadoff homer and a grand slam by Devon Travis. But Albies hit a two-run shot in the eighth to help Atlanta hold on for just its second win in eight games.

Coupled with Philadelphia's loss to the New York Mets, the Braves moved into a tie with the Phillies for the division lead.

Toronto's Sam Gaviglio (2-3) allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings.

                  INDIANS 19, REDS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Ramirez homered twice and drove in five runs as Cleveland took out some frustrations following a brutal loss with a thumping of Cincinnati.

Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Tyler Mahle (7-7) and connected for a three-run shot in Cleveland's nine-run third. With the Indians up 17-0, the All-Star was replaced in the fifth inning by manager Terry Francona before he could inflict further damage.

It was a much-needed rebound by the AL Central leaders, who squandered a 4-0 lead in the ninth on Tuesday night, when Francona's miscommunication with pitching coach Carl Willis on a choice of relievers helped the Reds rally for seven runs and stun the Indians.

Carlos Carrasco (10-5) reached 1,000 career strikeouts, and given the humongous lead, coasted through five innings for his second straight win since coming off the disabled list. Adam Plutko worked four innings for his first career save.

                  ATHLETICS 8, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Chad Pinder hit a three-run homer and Khris Davis added three RBIs as Oakland jumped on Lance McCullers Jr. early and cruised to a win over Houston.

Davis, who extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games, put the A's up 2-0 with a double in a three-run first. Pinder made it 6-0 when he connected off McCullers (10-4) for his ninth homer in the fourth.

Oakland starter Chris Bassitt (2-3) yielded five hits and three runs in five innings for his second straight win after losing his first three decisions.

If you did it long enough and you were sitting next to this thing for hours upon end like I was, a home run had a certain rhythm to it. You know somebody hit a home run, not even by looking at it, just by hearing how that thing was going—’oh, that’s a home run, I better check that out.’”

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                      13) You look at the benches in the NBA Summer League and you see two rows of coaches, maybe 8-9 coaches for each team. NBA teams spend lot of money on player development, which is more important now because players come into the league younger than ever before.

One of the first books I remember reading was The Open Man, Dave DeBusschere’s diary of the Knicks’ 1969-70 title team. For a 12-year old kid who was falling in love with basketball, I went thru that book pretty quickly.

One thing that stands out now was that coach Red Holzman had NO ASSISTANT COACHES; Dick McGuire was his advance scout and trainer Danny Whalen kept track of timeouts and served as an assistant coach of sorts, but Holzman did all the actual coaching.

The game has changed drastically in that regard.

                      12) George Karl’s son Coby is on the Lakers’ bench coaching during summer league; he is also the all-time leading scorer in Las Vegas Summer League history, with 337 points. Archie Goodwin is next, at 318 points.

                      11) Miami Marlins were 23-42 on June 10, but since then, they’re 15-14, hanging in there and hitting the ball well- they had 22 hits in a game in Washington Sunday. Don Mattingly has done a fine job keeping a talent-shy roster competitive in games.

                      10) Cincinnati Bengals may have seen one of the errors of their ways; they were 31st last year in $$$ spent on their offensive line, letting LT Andrew Whitworth bolt to the Rams.

Bengals are now 22nd in OL spending for this coming season; they hope it results in a QB who gets hit a lot less this season.

                      9) San Diego Padres lost their last 13 games against Clayton Kershaw, scoring a total of 12 runs off Kershaw in those 13 games.

                      8) An unnamed AL scout after watching the Kansas City Royals recently:

“I think someone will bite on Lucas Duda as a lefty bat off the bench. They won’t get enough for Duffy or Merrifield to move them. They’ll definitely move Moustakas and he will help someone. Won’t get the big return. Doesn’t happen anymore.”

                      7) Houston Astros’ contract situation in the near future:
                      — Verlander, $28M a year thru 2019 (Detroit is paying $8M of that)
                      — McCann, $17M with an option after this year (NYY is paying $5.5M of that)
                      — Keuchel, $13.2M, free agent this season
                      — Reddick, $13M a year thru 2020 (yikes)
                      — Gurriel, $12.4M this year, $10.4M in ’19, $8.4M in ’20.
                      — Altuve, $9M this year and next, then a $29M/year deal kicks in
                      — Morton $7M, free agent after this season
                      — Cole $6.75M, arbitration this winter, then free agent after 2019.
                      — Carlos Correa isn’t a free agent until after 2021
                      — Alex Bregman isn’t a free agent until after 2022

Astros have some serious decisions to make about their starting pitchers this winter; their young position players are going to keep Houston strong for a long time.

                      6) When the Indians blew a 4-0 ninth inning lead in a 7-4 to the Reds Tuesday, it was in large part the manager’s fault. Terry Francona told pitching coach Carl Willis to get “OP” up in the bullpen, he meant Oliver Perez, but Willis thought he said “OT” meaning Dan Otero, so Willis told the bullpen coach to get Otero warmed up.

Few minutes later, Francona went to the mound, waved to the bullpen for a pitching change and was surprised to see Otero come to the mound instead of Perez. Whoops.

                      5) Baseball doings:
                      — Indians’ OF Lonnie Chisenhall (calf) is out 8-10 weeks.

                      4) Injury-plagued Duke alum Harry Giles, who Sacramento drafted in 2017 despite having two ACL injuries before getting to the NBA, has played 23.3 mpg in his first three summer league games this month, scoring 12 ppg, grabbing 7.5 rpg.

                      3) There are 19 Kansas Jayhawk alums playing in Las Vegas this week.

                      2) There is guy named Chris Majkowski who is a radio engineer for Mets’ games and he has worked 4,011 consecutive games, dating back to 1993- imagine not missing one day of work for 25 years? Majkowski threw out the first pitch before the Mets’ game Wednesday.

                      1) Astros’ closer Ken Giles blew a 9th-inning lead Tuesday, appeared to curse out manager AJ Hinch when he was removed from the game, then was sent to AAA today. Alrighty then.

                      • LEADING OFF: Severino vs Kluber; Max to the rescue for Nats
                        July 11, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

                        PAIR OF ACES

Two of the top pitchers in the American League square off when the New York Yankees begin a series in Cleveland. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber (12-4, 2.49 ERA) starts for the Indians, while the AL leader in wins, Luis Severino (14-2, 2.12) takes the mound for New York in a matchup of 2018 All-Stars. The appearance will be Severino's first against Cleveland since last season's playoffs when he allowed three runs in seven innings of work and helped the Yankees force a decisive Game 5 in the AL Division Series with a 7-3 victory in Game 4.

                        SNELL'S SNUB

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Blake Snell (12-4) is second in the AL in ERA (2.09) and has 132 strikeouts in 116 innings this season. The 25-year-old lefty will make his first start since being left off the All-Star team Sunday when he takes the mound at Minnesota.

                        MAX TO THE RESCUE

The Nationals fell back to .500 with a 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, the 11th loss in their last 16 games. Washington will try to reclaim a winning record when it begins a four-game series in New York against the Mets. Fortunately for the struggling Nationals, they'll open with three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.33 ERA) on the mound, while the Mets counter with left-hander Steven Matz (4-6, 3.31).

                        • Aguilar, Segura win online vote for final All-Star spots
                          July 11, 2018

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar and Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura won the final two roster spots for next week's All-Star Game in Washington.

Major League Baseball released the results of online balloting for the last slot in each league Wednesday night, with Aguilar drawing 20.2 million votes to secure his first All-Star selection. His total was the second-highest in the history of the All-Star Final Vote, trailing only Justin Turner's 20.8 million votes last year.

The 28-year-old Venezuelan was tied for the National League lead with 23 home runs and becomes the fourth Milwaukee player headed to the game.

''The campaign was unbelievable - the people in Wisconsin and around the world really supported me,'' Aguilar said. ''It's a great thing.''

Brewers outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich had already been chosen, along with reliever Josh Hader.

Aguilar has 67 RBIs, including 12 in his past seven games, and is batting .307.

''I'm swinging really good right now,'' he said.

Segura snagged the last American League spot with 13.6 million votes. He was followed by Boston Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi, New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton, Minnesota Twins outfielder Eddie Rosario and Los Angeles Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

The 28-year-old Seattle shortstop was batting .329 and ranked second in the majors with 116 hits. He will join Mariners teammates Nelson Cruz, Edwin Diaz and Mitch Haniger at the All-Star Game. Segura, who made the NL All-Star squad in 2013 with Milwaukee, is the first Seattle player to win the fan voting for the final spot.

''It was unbelievable,'' Segura said. ''I can't believe all those people around the world, the fans, the marketing, the organization, the people in Seattle, my teammates, even Felix (Hernandez) yesterday going around the city trying to get some votes for me. It just feels amazing. It feels special. You come from another country and you see how the people support you around the world, it makes it even more special.''

San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt finished second in the NL balloting, followed by Max Muncy of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Trea Turner of the Washington Nationals and Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals.

                          • Cards' Mikolas to start Sunday, replaced by Stripling in ASG
                            July 11, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas was removed from the National League's active roster for the All-Star Game next Tuesday because he is scheduled to start Sunday for St. Louis against the Cincinnati Reds.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling was added to the NL pitching staff Wednesday as Mikolas' replacement.

Mikolas is 10-3 with a 2.65 ERA and was selected to his first All-Star team last weekend. The 29-year-old right-hander is enjoying a resurgent season in the majors following three years in Japan.

''He understands how important it is to give us our best shot on Sunday,'' Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. ''He's got to pitch (Sunday). And that's what he wants to do.''

Mikolas will still receive full All-Star honors in Washington.

''There's always the potential that you go there and don't play,'' Matheny added. ''It's just the honor more than anything - and the experience. It will be a great experience for him.''

Stripling also has been a big surprise since stepping into an injury-depleted rotation for the Dodgers. He is 7-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 24 games, including 13 starts. In his third big league season, he has 103 strikeouts and only 13 walks in 89 1/3 innings.

                            • Angels place Richards on disabled list due to UCL damage
                              July 11, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The Los Angeles Angels placed pitcher Garrett Richards on the 10-day disabled list due to ulnar collateral ligament damage in his right elbow.

General manager Billy Eppler said before Wednesday's game against Seattle that options to treat the injury will be decided on at a later date. Eppler said Richards would decide on ''conservative care'' or season-ending Tommy John surgery.

This is the third straight season that Richards has dealt with an arm injury. The right-hander had been limited to six starts each of the past two seasons. He missed most of 2016 due to an ulnar collateral ligament injury and had biceps nerve irritation last year.

''There is a scenario that could bring him back maybe the last couple of weeks, the last week, something like that,'' Eppler said.

Richards, who will become a free agent at the end of the season, is 5-4 with a 3.66 earned run average. He has made 16 starts this season, which is his most since 2015.

Richards made his second start on Tuesday since returning from the 10-day disabled list because of a left hamstring strain. He gave up three runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings and left the game in the middle of an at-bat in the third inning against Seattle's Nelson Cruz.
