  • Yankees split doubleheader with Orioles
    July 10, 2018

BALTIMORE (AP) Brett Gardner had four hits, homered and drove in three runs to help the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-2 Monday night for a doubleheader split.

In the opener, Danny Valencia snapped an 0-for-25 skid with a three-run homer off CC Sabathia, and Baltimore ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory.

The split left the Yankees a 4-4 record against Baltimore and dropped them 2+ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East.

The first game ended with Gardner grounding out as a pinch hitter with the potential tying run on third base. He returned in the nightcap to torment the Orioles at the plate and in center field, where he made several fine, running catches.

Gardner led off with a single off Jefry Ramirez (0-3) and scored on a double by Didi Gregorius. In the fourth, Gardner hit his seventh homer, a two-run drive that made it 3-0.

That was enough offense for Luis Cessa (1-1), who allowed three hits over six shutout innings.

    RED SOX 5, RANGERS 0

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez hit his major league-leading 28th home run, Steve Pearce added a two-run shot and Eduardo Rodriguez pitched 5 2/3 innings to lead the Red Sox to a victory over the Rangers and their seventh straight win.

The Red Sox won for the 14th time in 17 games to end the day with their biggest lead over the Yankees in the AL East since April. Boston led New York, which lost the opener of a doubleheader in Baltimore, by three games pending the outcome of the nightcap.

Rodriguez (11-3) held Texas hitless until Adrian Beltre singled with one out in the fourth. He allowed just three singles and three walks, striking out five.

Mike Minor (6-5) allowed two runs on six hits.

    REDS 7, INDIANS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Anthony DeSclafani allowed one run in seven innings, Scott Schebler was 4 for 5 with a homer, and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-5 on Monday night.

All-Star first baseman Joey Votto homered for Cincinnati, which took the opener of the team's annual battle for the Ohio Cup and sent the AL Central leaders to their third straight loss.

Cincinnati improved to 9-2 against American League teams and is 37-36 since interim manager Jim Riggleman replaced Bryan Price on April 19.

DeSclafani (4-1) held the Indians to five hits.

Votto hit a fifth-inning home run off Mike Clevinger (7-4), who matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in six-plus innings.

    RAYS 10, TIGERS 9, 10 innings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Daniel Robertson hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Rays won for the 12th time in their last 13 home games by beating the Tigers.

Kevin Kiermaier had a one-out triple off Blaine Hardy (3-2) in the 10th. After Matt Duffy walked, Robertson won it on his hit to center.

Matt Andriese (2-3), the eighth Tampa Bay reliever, worked a scoreless 10th.

Niko Goodrum had two doubles and three RBIs for the Tigers, who have lost 16 of 20.

    TWINS 3, ROYALS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eduardo Escobar had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh to support Jose Berrios' strong outing as the Twins beat the Royals.

Escobar plated Joe Mauer with a seventh-inning single as Minnesota took advantage of Kansas City's struggling bullpen to win its fifth straight game.

Berrios (9-7), elected to his first All-Star game a day earlier, allowed one run on six hits in seven innings. He struck out eight while throwing a season-high 111 pitches.

Fernando Rodney allowed a walk and hit in the ninth but secured his 20th save.

Tim Hill (1-3) surrendered both runs and got just one out in relief after starter Danny Duffy's six scoreless innings. The Royals started the game with a league-worst 5.29 relief ERA.

    ATHLETICS 2, ASTROS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Frankie Montas and two relievers combined for a five-hitter, Stephen Piscotty homered and hit an RBI single and the Athletics beat the Astros.

Houston starter Gerrit Cole struck out 11 and scattered three singles across six scoreless innings before Brad Peacock (1-4) took over for the seventh. Piscotty, who finished with three of Oakland's six hits, greeted him with his home run to left field to make it 1-0. He added an insurance run with a single in the eighth.

The Athletics have won three in a row and 11 of their last 13. The loss snapped Houston's six-game winning streak.

Montas (5-2) also allowed just three singles with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings to get back on track after yielding 17 hits and nine runs combined in his last two starts.

    PIRATES 6, NATIONALS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Gregory Polanco drove in four runs in the first two innings and the Pirates went on to a victory over the Nationals.

Polanco hit a two-run double in the first as the Pirates started the game with four straight hits, then added a two-run home run in the second, his 13th of the season to extend the lead to 6-1.

Ivan Nova (5-6) worked around eight hits to hold the Nationals to three runs over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Felipe Vazquez pitched the ninth for his 19th save of the season as Pittsburgh won its second straight after a five-game skid.

Jefry Rodriguez (0-1) took 90 pitches to get through five innings, and was charged with all six runs.

    MARLINS 4, BREWERS 3, 10 innings

MIAMI (AP) - Backup catcher Bryan Holaday hit a walk-off RBI single with one out in the 10th inning and the Marlins beat the Brewers.

Holaday, who came into the game batting .165, was in the lineup because the Marlins placed All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto on the paternity list before the game in anticipation of the birth of his first child.

Jesus Aguilar gave his All-Star candidacy a boost by hitting his NL-leading 23rd homer for Milwaukee.

In a matchup of worst against first, the Marlins ended a streak of five consecutive losses to Milwaukee. Miami has the worst record and Milwaukee the best in the NL.

Miguel Rojas was hit by a pitch from Corey Knebel (2-1) with one out in the 10th, Cameron Maybin walked, and both advanced on a double steal. Holaday then bounced a grounder up the middle against the drawn-in infield.

The Brewers had runners at second and third with none out in the 10th, but Brad Ziegler (1-5) struck out Aguilar, and after an intentional walk, Brad Miller bounced into a double play.

    METS 4, PHILLIES 3, 1st Game, 10 innings

    PHILLIES 3, METS 1, 2nd Game

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Nola allowed one hit in seven shutout innings and lashed a three-run double that sent the Philadelphia Phillies past the New York Mets 3-1 on Monday for a split of their twinight doubleheader.

One night after being named to his first All-Star team, Nola (12-2) struck out 10 and won his sixth straight decision to become the only 12-game winner in the National League. With his teammates scuffling at the plate, he took care of the offense himself by doubling his career RBI total in the fifth.

Mets rookie starter Corey Oswalt (0-2) took the loss.

In the opener, Wilmer Flores connected for a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the 10th off Victor Arano (1-1) to give New York a 4-3 victory. Tim Peterson (2-1) pitched out of trouble in the 10th to get the win.

Tuesday’s Den: Random comments, thoughts, questions

        13) Is the famous cook Wolfgang Puck a hockey fan?

        12) What is the point of batting the pitcher 8th? Still don’t get it, and no one has done it in a playoff game, so that tells me it is just a gimmick.

        11) Wouldn’t geographic re-alignment help baseball by creating more games between rivals and reducing travel costs?

If the All-Star Game was US against the World, it would be a lot more spirited.

        10) An actor named John Hurt passed away last year, at age 77; he appeared in 207 movies, and died in 43 of them, which is the record for the actor whose character died in the most movies.

        9) I don’t think set-up men should make the All-Star Game; if you’re not a starter or not the team’s closer, then you’re not one of the six best pitchers on your team, so no All-Star Game for you.

An exception is Milwaukee’s Josh Hader; their front office is misusing Hader so badly— he’s thrown only 44.2 innings all season, when he should be starting games, not pitching in the 6th and 7th inning only.

If Milwaukee gets nosed out of a playoff berth, that’ll be a big reason why.

        8) Mets sent TV analyst Keith Hernandez out to a wiffle ball field in centerfield for an inning or two during the first game of last night’s twinbill, to tutor little kids on hitting balls off a tee.

You know your team is bad when watching a 5-year old whack wiffle balls is a diversion from the actual game you’re broadcasting.

        7) A former Goldman Sachs banker is in talks with U.S. prosecutors to potentially plead guilty to criminal charges stemming from an alleged scheme to steal billions of dollars from a Malaysian state investment fund.

Is there no end to the corruption in this world? It is sad.

        6) There was once an NHL player named Miroslav Satan who played 15 years in the NHL, playing for five different teams, scoring 224 goals. How could someone named Satan never play for the Devils?

        5) I’m curious how many actors have played the President of the US in movies/TV.

        4) Do NASCAR drivers get a lot of speeding tickets when they’re driving in normal traffic?

        3) I was curious about guys who are in the Las Vegas Summer League, are they responsible for their own sneakers, if they’re guys without shoe contracts?

Was told by someone who knows that established NBA players send sneakers to guys on their team who might need them, and that player agents might also provide some to clients.

        2) Baseball doings:
        — Mets put Todd Frazier (ribs) on the DL.
        — Marlins’ C JT Realmuto is on the paternity list.
        — Dodgers put OF Yasiel Puig (oblique) on the DL.

        1) Former NBA star Yao Ming got his degree this weekend from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China; he first enrolled in 2011. The 38-year old Ming majored in Economics.

                    STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

                    Streaking:
Trevor Bauer, Cleveland Indians (8-6, 2.45 ERA, $-323)

It's hard for pitchers like Bauer to be considered solid value plays, given that they're almost always pitching as an overwhelming favorite. But Bauer is doing his part to recoup his overall value for the season, with the Indians having won four of his previous six turns. Bauer has given up just nine total earned runs in those six starts and hasn't allowed a home run in seven straight outings.

Bauer is a massive -230 fave against the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, but is pitching well enough to warrant a look as either a run-line play (-115) or as part of a Cleveland Win/Under parlay (+163).

                    Slumping:
Matthew Boyd, Detroit Tigers (4-7, 4.58 ERA, $199)

Boyd was in this space last week after losing three consecutive road starts and looking mostly awful in all three. Boyd's return to Comerica Park didn't fix things, as he was tagged for seven runs over four innings in a loss to the Texas Rangers. Boyd has allowed a whopping 20 runs over 17 innings in his last four starts, cutting a major swath out of his early-season profits.

Even at a tempting +149 against Tampa Bay counterpart Matt Andriese, Boyd is pitching far too poorly to be a trustworthy option.

                      Tuesday MLB Best Bet

                      Oakland A's vs Houston Astros

The Oakland A's managed to steal Game 1 of this series as big underdogs (+190) with a 2-0 win last night. Oakland was able to find a way to score just enough to get the job done and they can thank Stephen Piscotty for most of that as he drove in both of the runs.

But beating the defending champs with Gerrit Cole on the hill is only the first part of a tough week for the A's as they've got to deal with Justin Verlander and now a pissed off Astros bunch tonight. Can Oakland steal another victory and ensure at least a series split?

Odds: Oakland (+203) vs Houston (-220); Total set at 7.5

Monday's victory made it consecutive shutout wins for Oakland who have now won eight of 10 overall. Oakland has four wins over Cleveland and one win over Houston in that span so it's not like their schedule has been soft either. This is a team that's making a mid-season push to get back into at least the Wild Card conversation.

At 51-40, this A's team has been a money maker all year (+12.88 units) yet because there are other “bigger” stories out there like the Yankees/Red Sox battle and the resurgence of Seattle this year, the A's often get overlooked by mainstream media and bettors alike. But as good as consecutive shutout wins and the consistently strong baseball the A's have played, I'm not sure I'm ready to back them as heavy underdogs tonight.

Yet, I'm not sure I'm ready to back Houston at this price either basically for all the reasons I discussed earlier about Oakland actually being much better in reality than general MLB betting markets perceive.

Verlander is a beast no doubt, but the Astros are just 11-8 SU in his 10 starts this year thanks to not exactly littering him with plenty of run support. Houston scores just 3.8 runs per game with Verlander on the hill and that's compared to the 5.08 per game they put up overall. Eventually that run support for Verlander should come around, but I'm not laying -220 hoping that tonight's the night.

Instead, I am willing to risk -110 to -125 on that proposition in terms of taking the high side of this total that currently sits at 7.5. See, Houston has been shut out five previous times this year prior to last night and the average total runs scored in their next outing clocks in at 8.8 runs per game.

That streak of five games also includes a stretch where Houston was actually shut out in consecutive games, so if you eliminate that game from the outcomes – because how likely is it that Houston gets shutout again tonight and Oakland gets third shutout victory in a row? - that average creeps much higher to 10 runs per game post-Houston shutout loss.

Obviously pitching matchups matter in those scenarios and having a Verlander vs Manaea matchup doesn't really do 'over' bettors a lot of help in that regard, but the 'over' has still cashed at a 76% clip (10-2-1 O/U) the last 13 times these two AL West rivals have played.

High-scoring games are more of the norm for these two, and considering Oakland is 33-14-4 O/U against a quality starter with a WHIP of 1.15 or lower, fearing Oakland's bats getting mowed down one-by-one tonight by Verlander shouldn't be that big of a concern.

With the majority of bettors expecting these starting pitchers to live up to their numbers and reputation this year and backing the low side of this total, I've actually quite excited about going the other way.

VegasInsider.com currently shows 85%+ on the 'under' tonight – pushing it down to 7.5 – and now that the number is below that flat '8' mark and eight runs is enough for a winner I've got to fire.

                      Best Bet: Over 8 runs

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins

It’s hard to back a team that can’t win, and the Kansas City Royals can’t win. They lost their 10th consecutive game on Monday, falling 3-1 in the series opener to the Minnesota Twins, and they’ve dropped 28 of their last 32 games. They aren’t the worst team in the Majors yet, but they are giving the Orioles a battle for the basement.

Looking for a surge before the All-Star break, the Twins have taken care of business against the worst teams, following up a four-game sweep of the O’s by taking Monday’s tilt for their fifth straight win. The AL Central rivals are meeting for just the fifth time this season and they’ve split the first four games.

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins
Date and Time: Tuesday, July 10, 2018, 8:10 p.m. ET
                      Location: Target Field, Minneapolis, MN
                      MLB Odds - Minnesota -185, Kansas City +160, O/U 9.5
Probable Pitchers: Ian Kennedy vs. Aaron Slegers
Royals vs. Twins TV Coverage: FS1

The Royals are bad and they’re bad in just about every aspect of the game. The pitching staff has been gouged to the tune of a 5.33 ERA and they score less than 3.5 runs per game. Both rank dead last in the Majors. The good news for KC fans is that the team can’t lose every game and the law of averages will catch up with them eventually. Their current 10-game losing streak is the longest of the season, narrowly edging out a pair of nine-game slides from earlier in the year.

Ned Yost would certainly welcome a win and so would starter Ian Kennedy, who hasn’t tasted victory since April 7. The Royals have lost the last 10 games started by Kennedy and they are just 3-14 when he takes the bump, making him the least profitable starter in the Bigs.

After reaching the postseason in 2017, the Twins were considered a contender for the AL Central crown this year. However, things haven’t quite worked out. They have been on a roll before the All-Star break, matching a season-high with their fifth straight win after taking the opener of the series on Monday. They will open the post-break portion of their schedule against the Royals and play their division foe 13 times in the second half. Of course that’s meaningless if they can’t win those games.

It’s odd for division rivals to have played just four times before Tuesday’s tilt, but that’s how the schedule has played out in the Central. The Twins evened the series with Monday’s win and will look to continue their assault on lesser clubs. Their current winning streak started with a four-game sweep of the Orioles and they have a 29-10 advantage in runs over the last five outings.

                      Probable Pitchers

Ian Kennedy ( 1-8, 5.11 ERA ) is expected to come off the disabled list and get the start, looking for his first win since early April. Once a contender for the Cy Young after winning 21 games with Arizona in 2011, the righthander has fallen on hard times. Kennedy hasn’t pitched since June 29 when he suffered an oblique strain in a loss to Seattle. He allowed three runs on three hits, including a pair of home runs, in four innings.

Kennedy has been susceptible to the long ball giving up over 30 dingers in each of the previous three seasons. He’s surrendered 17 this season in 91.2 innings. Despite the home runs and lofty ERA, the under is 13-4 in games started by Kennedy. He hasn’t had a lot of success at Target Field with a lifetime 6.75 ERA in five starts. He’s also surrendered six homers in 21.1 innings.

Looking to take hold of the fifth spot in the Twins rotation, Aaron Slegers ( 1-0, 2.38 ERA ) will get another opportunity to show what he can do. Making his first start of the season and only his second appearance the righty was solid in a 5-2 win over the Orioles on July 5. He allowed just three hits and one run over six innings for his first career victory.

At 6-10, 245 pounds, Slegers is an imposing figure on the hill. However, he isn’t overpowering and throws to contact. He had a 3.55 ERA in 14 starts at Triple-A before getting called up. His only other appearance this season came against the Royals in May in an extended relief stint when he tossed 5.1 innings giving up six hits and two runs on a career-high 83 pitches.

                      Royals vs. Twins Picks

The Royals will win a game at some point and it’s coming sooner rather than later. However, things have gone terribly wrong this season. The Twins still have thoughts of catching the Indians and games against KC are must wins. Kennedy hasn’t been sharp this season and his struggles are worse on the road. Coming off an injury is always tough and a short stint leaves a weak bullpen further exposed. That leaves the Twins in a good spot to get the victory and cash the over.

Royals vs. Twins Pick: Twins -185

Royals vs. Twins Score Prediction: Minnesota 7, Kansas City 4

                        • Indians allow 7 in 9th, lose to Reds 7-4 after Bauer's gem
                          July 10, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) Joey Votto hit a go-ahead three-run double during a seven-run ninth inning and the Cleveland Indians bullpen wasted a gem from Trevor Bauer in a 7-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Indians closer Cody Allen (2-4) allowed six runs after getting two outs in the ninth, the last three charged on Votto's sharp hit to right off Dan Otero. Adam Duvall also doubled in two in the ninth, while Jose Peraza and Eugenio Suarez each hit an RBI single. Cincinnati had seven straight batters reach with two outs, and the inning didn't end until Scooter Gennett ran into the third out at third base on Suarez's single.

Cleveland's bullpen entered Tuesday with a 5.13 ERA, better only than the Rockies (5.28) and Royals (5.35).

Bauer was brilliant, striking out 12 over eight scoreless innings in his first appearance since being named to the All-Star team for the first time. The right-hander allowed three singles, walked one and didn't allow a hit until Jesse Winker hit a one-out single in the fifth.

Former Cleveland reliever Kyle Crockett (1-0) recorded the final two outs in the eighth, and Raisel Iglesias worked the ninth for his second save in two nights and his 19th of the season.

                          RED SOX 8, RANGERS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Andrew Benintendi bolstered his All-Star credentials with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in his final game before fan votes are tallied, and Boston extended its winning streak to eight games.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a pair of RBI doubles and Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run triple as Boston scored five runs in the third and won for the 15th time in 18 games.

Matt Barnes (3-2) got the win with one inning of relief. He was the fourth of five relievers the Red Sox rode to another victory and improve on the best record in the majors.

Rougned Odor homered and Joey Gallo hit a two-run double for the Rangers, who have lost four of five.

Yovani Gallardo (3-1) made it through the first two innings without allowing a baserunner, but ran into trouble in the third.

                          RAYS 5, TIGERS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Wilson Ramos hit a three-run homer, five Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a five-hitter and the Rays beat Detroit.

The Rays moved three games above .500 for the first time since Aug. 6 last year after posting their 13th win in the last 14 home games.

Ramos, elected to start at catcher for the AL in next week's All-Star Game, keyed a five-run third inning when he connected off Matthew Boyd (4-8) for his 14th homer. That tied John Flaherty (1999) for the most in a season by a Tampa Bay catcher.

Ryne Stanek pitched two innings as the opener for the Rays on their latest bullpen day. He allowed a first-inning single to Niko Goodrum. Jose Alvarado (1-3) and Jaime Schultz followed Stanek, and both went two hitless innings.

                          BREWERS 8, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Christian Yelich had three hits and four RBIs, Travis Shaw homered and Milwaukee beat Miami.

Shaw and Tyler Saladino had two RBIs each, and Milwaukee won for the seventh time in nine games. Jhoulys Chacin (8-3) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Corbin Burnes pitched two perfect innings in his major league debut for the save.

Miami's Pablo Lopez (1-1) pitched six innings and allowed five runs.

                          PHILLIES 7, METS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Enyel De Los Santos won his major league debut and Philadelphia got home runs from Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera in a victory over New York.

Franco drove in four runs as the Phillies, who began the day tied with Atlanta atop the NL East, won for the 10th time in 13 games. Nick Williams had three hits and two RBIs, and Rhys Hoskins also got three hits.

De Los Santos (1-0) allowed three runs and five hits over 6 1/3 effective innings. The 22-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he was 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 16 starts, and matched against another starter making his big league debut in Drew Gagnon (0-1) of the Mets.

It was the first time a Phillies starter made his debut against another starter in his first outing since Sept. 25, 1944, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                          ORIOLES 6, YANKEES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Manny Machado hit two home runs, Jonathan Schoop singled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, and Baltimore rallied past New York.

Greg Bird homered and drove in four runs for the Yankees, who own an inexplicable 4-5 record against the last-place Orioles.

Machado brought the Orioles back from deficits of 3-2 and 5-3 before Schoop won it in the ninth against Dellin Betances (1-3).

Zach Britton (1-0) worked the ninth for Baltimore.

                          BLUE JAYS 6, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Russell Martin's sharp single in Toronto's five-run eighth drove in the go-ahead run, Marcus Stroman allowed pitched seven strong innings, and Toronto beat Atlanta to knock the Braves out of first place.

The Braves, who have lost six of their last seven, fell to second in the NL East after beginning the day tied with Philadelphia for the lead. Atlanta had held at least a share of first since May 30.

Toronto was limited to three hits through seven innings by Julio Teheran and Jesse Biddle, and the game was tied 1-1. The Blue Jays broke out with five hits off A.J. Minter (3-2) and Shane Carle in the eighth.

Stroman (2-6) gave up one run and six hits with two walks in seven innings for his second win in Atlanta in two seasons.

“It’s really difficult to get three hits in one inning. If you hit three singles, it’s one run. If you get a walk and a double, you might get one run. If you get a double and a single, you might get one run. So my goal is to touch second base every single time I step to home plate.”

                              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                              13) Six NFL teams improved their win total by 4+ games last year.

Over the last 19 years, 104 teams have done that; of the 98 before last year, they mostly regressed in the third year, winning an average of 2.45 less games per season. 70 of those 98 teams won fewer games than they did in the second year, when they improved.

                              12) On the other hand, over those same 19 years, 104 teams have won 4+ fewer games than they did the year before, and strange as it may seem, in that third year, the 96 teams prior to LY improved by the same 2.45 wins per team that the above teams regressed by. Go figure.

                              11) This is one story of how difficult it is to make an NBA roster.

Kid named Isaiah Briscoe is on Orlando’s summer league team in Las Vegas; he played two years at Kentucky, scoring 9.6 ppg as a freshman, 12.1 as a sophomore, at which point he declared for the NBA, but he wasn’t drafted- doesn’t shoot the ball well enough.

Briscoe played for the 76ers’ Summer League team LY, went to training camp with the Trailblazers, but got cut— he wound up playing pro ball in Russia last winter, and did well there, scoring 18 ppg.

                              10) Can you imagine what it is like to be a 21-year old kid who was treated like a God for two years at Kentucky, then spending last year as an anonymous American playing in Russia?

Talk about a humbling experience; I’m sure he made decent bank over there, but it ain’t the NBA and you’re in freakin’ Russia.

Briscoe had nine points in 24:00 vs Memphis Sunday, played three scoreless minutes against the Suns Monday. Orlando is a rebuilding team, but it could be back to Russia or some other foreign country for Briscoe- where else can a 22-year old with no college degree make a six-figure salary?

                              9) G-League players make around $35,000, except for the two 2-way players each team can have, who make anywhere from $75K to $275K a year.

The competition for these NBA roster spots is really, really fierce.

                              8) USC is a football underdog twice this September; Trojans are +4 at Stanford September 8, and +4.5 at Texas Sept 15.

Going back to 2016, USC will have been an underdog in five of its last 12 September games, and that is a little surprising.

                              7) fanatics.com has orders for Lebron James #23 Laker jerseys from all 50 states and 90 different countries.

                              6) Rookie pitcher Corey Oswalt allowed one hit in six innings for the Mets Monday night, but the one hit he allowed was a bases loaded double to the opposing pitcher Aaron Nola, who was 9 for 136 hitting in his major league career.

                              5) Buster Posey has a problem with hip inflammation, will miss the All-Star Game; Yadier Molina takes his place on the NL roster.

                              4) Sacramento Kings’ top draft pick Marvin Bagley III is out for the rest of Summer League with a pelvic bone bruise. Bagley is still a kid, won’t turn 20 until next March. Takes some time for these young players to mature physically so they can compete with adults.

                              3) Royals’ 2B Whit Merrifield found out just before Sunday’s game that he wouldn’t be an All-Star; he went out and got five hits against the Red Sox.

Merrifield is hitting .303 this year with a .371 OB% and is now mentioned in trade rumors to lot of contending teams. He is also versatile, playing in both infield and outfield.

With Gleyber Torres hurt, Jed Lowrie was named to the AL team at 2B.

                              2) Reds 7, Indians 4— Cleveland led this game 4-0 in 9th inning; their bullpen has worst ERA in the major leagues, which suggests they’ll be making a trade or two for a reliever this month.

                              1) Congrats to the workers who rescued the 12 soccer players and their coach from the flooded caves in Thailand. Great work by those Navy SEALS.
