          • Friday's Diamond Notes
            Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Cubs (7-1 last eight)

Chicago is one victory away from becoming the second National League to reach the 50-win mark. The Cubs are riding a six-game winning streak after pulling off a pair of interleague home sweeps over Minnesota and Detroit. The offense has been scorching the last eight games by scoring at least five runs in each of these contests, including reaching double-digits four times.

The Cubs are in a rare revenge spot after getting swept in a four-game series at Cincinnati in late June. The Reds invade Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon as Cincinnati has won four of five. Southpaw Mike Montgomery takes the mound for the Cubs looking to extend this hot streak as Chicago owns a 5-2 record in his past seven starts. Montgomery allowed four runs in six innings of work in an 8-6 loss to the Reds on June 24 as Cincinnati heads to Chicago for the first time this season.

Coldest team: Tigers (2-14 last 16)

Detroit returned home after getting swept in a two-game set at Wrigley Field and put together another loss in Thursday’s defeat to Texas. The Tigers have dropped five consecutive games at Comerica Park with their last home victory coming on June 14 against Minnesota. Due to the dreadful play of the White Sox and Royals, the Tigers have managed to sit in third place of the AL Central, but remain 12 games behind the Indians past the halfway point of the season.

Game 2 of the four-game set at Comerica Park takes place tonight as Jordan Zimmermann tries to get the Tigers in the win column. Zimmermann is coming off a solid effort in his last start at Toronto by scattering five hits and allowing one run in seven innings of a 9-1 blowout as a +175 underdog, but Detroit owns a 1-3 record in his four home starts.

Hottest pitcher: Dereck Rodriguez, Giants (3-1, 3.16 ERA)

The son of Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez has delivered in short time since entering the San Francisco rotation in June. Rodriguez is unbeaten in his last four starts, while the right-hander has yielded one earned run in his previous 13.1 innings of work. Rodriguez delivered 6.1 shutout innings in a 7-0 trouncing of Arizona his last time out, but the Giants will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak on Friday against the Cardinals.

Coldest pitcher: Sonny Gray, Yankees (5-6, 5.44 ERA)

Things haven’t worked out well for the New York right-hander of late, as the Yankees have been shut out in each of Gray’s last two starts. In the losses to the Rays and Red Sox, Gray has been tagged for 13 hits and 10 runs in nine innings of work, while allowing six runs to Boston for the second time this season. Gray will try to turn things around at Toronto on Friday,

Biggest OVER run: Reds (6-1-1 last eight)

Cincinnati’s offense has caught fire of late as the Reds plated 20 runs in their series victory over the White Sox, while putting up 20 runs in the final two wins of their previous series against the Brewers. In the four-game sweep of the Cubs in late June, the Reds crossed home plate 31 times, while Cincinnati has scored fewer than four runs once in the last 17 games. The Reds square off with the Cubs this afternoon at Wrigley Field as Tyler Mahle heads to the mound, looking for his seventh win. Mahle has seen the UNDER connect in five of seven road starts this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (8-1 last nine)

Philadelphia welcomes in cross-state rival Pittsburgh tonight as the Phillies have allowed three runs or less during all four games of their current winning streak. The Phillies cashed the UNDER in eight of nine games on their recent homestand with the lone OVER coming in a 17-7 loss to the Nationals, but Philadelphia yielded eight runs to Washington in the other three matchups. Nick Pivetta tries to get on track for Philadelphia tonight as he was knocked around for seven runs in 1.2 innings in that 10-run defeat to Washington last Friday night. Philadelphia is on a 4-0 OVER run in Pivetta’s previous four starts, but the Phillies limited the Pirates to five runs in a four-game sweep at Citizens Bank Park in April.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Angels

The annual “Freeway Series” begins tonight in Anaheim as the Angels return home from a brutal road trip. The Halos posted a 3-7 record on its four-city road trip, capped off by a series loss against red-hot Seattle, while the Angels own a 3-9 mark in the past 12 games overall. The Dodgers are headed in the opposite direction by winning four straight games, including pulling off a dominating three-game sweep of the Pirates by outscoring Pittsburgh, 31-8.

Kenta Maeda takes the mound for the Dodgers in the opener as he is coming off a loss to the Rockies in his last start in spite of striking out nine batters in seven innings. The Dodgers own a 5-2 record in Maeda’s past seven trips to the mound, while posting a 7-0-1 mark to the UNDER in his previous eight starts overall. Last season, Maeda dominated the Angels as a -200 home favorite in a 4-0 victory as he tossed seven scoreless innings.

Felix Pena makes his fourth start for the Angels since entering the rotation in late June. The right-hander picked up his first win as an Angel in a 7-1 rout of the Orioles in his last outing as he went 5.1 innings and allowed five hits. The Halos have won six of their last eight home openers, while the two southern California rivals split four matchups in 2017.

            Betcha didn’t know:
The Marlins built a seemingly safe 9-0 lead over the Nationals on Thursday before melting down and falling, 14-12. Not only were Washington money-line winners ecstatic, but those that bet on the run-line with the Nats were also victorious. That victory marked Washington’s 12th consecutive win over Miami dating back to last season as 10 of those triumphs have come by two runs or more.

            Biggest public favorite:
            Red Sox (-320) at Royals

            Biggest public underdog:
            Braves (+115) at Brewers

            Biggest line move:
Twins (-118 to -135) vs. Orioles

              STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

              Streaking:
Jacob DeGrom, New York Mets (5-4, 1.84 ERA, $-848)

How on Earth does a pitcher with a sub-2.00 ERA represent such terrible value? When that pitcher toils for one of the worst offenses in the league, that's how. And while DeGrom's hideous deficit will almost certainly turn bettors away, he has put together nine straight quality starts while allowing just four homers in that span. In other words, he's very, very good.

It might make you squeamish to even consider the Mets at -170 against the Rays, but Tampa won't do much of anything in this one. And that's good news for New York, which might only need two or three runs to win this thing.

              Slumping:
Nick Pivetta, Philadelphia Phillies (5-7, 4.66 ERA, $61)

A promising start to the season is now a distant memory for Pivetta, who looks to turn things around Friday in Pittsburgh. The 25-year-old Canadian righty has been in a tailspin of late, with Philly having lost six of his previous seven starts. He has given up eight home runs in his past five turns in the rotation, while allowing more than four runs three times in that span.

While Pittsburgh counterpart Trevor Williams has only been slightly better over that same stretch, it's hard to trust Pivetta as a -120 road fave given his recent struggles, so you probably shouldn't.

They actually have almost the exact same record that Cleveland has, as the A’s are 48-39, while the Indians are 48-37. The problem for the A’s is that they play in the AL West where they are well behind both Houston and Seattle.

The probable pitching matchup for Friday has Paul Blackburn going for the A’s, while the Indians send Carlos Carrasco. Let’s look at this contest and MLB picks.

                Oakland Athletics vs. Cleveland Indians
Date and Time: Friday, July 6, 2018, 7:10 p.m. ET
                Location: Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH
                MLB Odds: Indians -180, O/U 9 under
Probable Pitchers: Paul Blackburn vs. Carlos Carrasco
Athletics vs. Indians TV Coverage: ESPN

The A’s have been a good road team this season, as they are 24-18 on the road, with 23 games going over, 15 going under the total, with four pushes. They are averaging about 4.6 runs per game and giving up 4.1 per contest.

The Indians are 27-13 at home with 26 games going over, 12 going under the total, with one push. They are scoring five runs per game and giving up about 3.9 per contest.

                Starting Pitchers

Blackburn is 2-2 on the season with a 6.46 ERA. He did pitch well last time out against the Indians, as he allowed just three hits and no runs in 6.1 innings last Friday. Blackburn’s overall numbers are skewed by one terrible outing where he pitched just 1.1 innings against Houston and gave up eight runs.

Carrasco is 8-5 on the season with a 4.24 ERA. He has not pitched since the middle of last month. He was on the DL with a forearm injury, but he looked really good in a rehab start last Saturday against Akron. He threw four scoreless innings and threw 58 pitches. Cleveland manager Terry Francona said that Carrasco also threw in the bullpen following that start so Carrasco is not expected to be on a pitch count.

                Key Stats

The Athletics are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in Cleveland. The Athletics are 4-0 in their last 4 road games. The Athletics are 14-3 in their last 17 games on grass. The Athletics are 42-16 in their last 58 vs. the American League Central. The Athletics are 7-3 in Blackburn’s last 10 starts. The Indians are 46-17 in their last 63 home games. The Indians are 39-15 in their last 54 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Indians are 14-5 in Carrasco’s last 19 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 6-1 in the Athletics last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 4-1 in Blackburn’s last 5 road starts. The Over is 23-6-1 in the Indians last 30 home games. The Over is 34-16-1 in Carrasco’s last 51 home starts. The Under is 4-0 in Carrasco’s last 4 starts vs. the Athletics. The Under is 26-10-2 in the last 38 meetings between the A’s and Indians in Cleveland.

                Athletics vs. Indians Picks

This game has a lot of conflicting numbers, as the A’s are solid on the road, but the Indians are good at home. Blackburn has been solid on the road, while Carrasco has been excellent at home. I think there are two factors that point to Cleveland in this contest. First, the Indians have taken six of the last seven at home against the A’s and second, Carrasco is simply a better pitcher than Blackburn. And despite how the A’s have played so far this season, I also think Cleveland is simply the better team. I will lay the price and take the Indians on Friday night. I also lean a little bit to the under, as the last four starts by Carrasco against the A’s have gone under the total.

                Athletics vs. Indians Pick: Indians
Athletics vs. Indians Score Prediction: Indians 5, A’s 2

                  Friday MLB Best Bet

                  Miami Marlins vs Washington Nationals

Miami and Washington got involved in a wild series opener yesterday as it ended up being a 14-12 victory for the Nationals. That was the 10th straight win for Washington against Miami, but as much of a story as a 14-12 score tells, it comes nowhere near telling the whole thing.

Miami jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the 2nd inning and built it up to 9-0 after the top of the 4th. But that was the beginning of the end for the Marlins as Washington went on to score all 14 of their runs in innings 4-7 and were able to bring it home late despite another Miami push.

Blowing a 9-0 lead in any fashion has to sting and it will be interesting to see how the Marlins pick themselves up for tonight's contest.

Both teams would love to see their own offenses stay hot, but they can't be pleased with how poor their pitching was and how much work their respective bullpens got. Tonight Miami turns to Dan Straily to give them a quality outing while Washington is looking for the same from Gio Gonzalez tonight. Will any of them get it done?

Odds: Miami (+188) vs Washington (-210); Total set at 9

Washington's comeback win last night was their 12th in a row against this Miami franchise as they've spent the bulk of the last few years beating up on some very bad Marlins teams. They found a way (and probably got a little lucky) in keeping that streak alive last night, and in terms of tonight's situation, going back to the well and backing Washington might not be a bad idea. The price is steep in terms of juice, but it's tough to envision this Marlins team bouncing back in a hurry after blowing a game in the fashion they did. Furthermore, Washington's comeback win does nothing to really solve their problems as they are still a team that needs to string a few long winning streaks together over the next month or two to put themselves back in the playoff picture. This is the perfect opportunity to do so, especially with a guy like Mike DiMuro behind the dish and his 13-2 SU record for the home team when he's calling balls and strikes.

Yet, as good as that number is for home teams with DiMuro behind the plate, I am not really looking to get a significant wager on the side in this contest. It's the total I'm attacking with DiMuro there as not only has he been a great bet for home teams, but he's been a great 'under' bet for bettors all year long.

A colleague here at VegasInsider.com pointed this out last week or so about DiMuro (among others) being a great guy to back the 'under' with and since that time he's come in with another two 'unders' as his record now sits at 3-11 O/U (it was listed at 3-9 O/U in the article). A game featuring two teams that combined for 26 runs the day before doesn't always lead many to have the first thought of going 'under' the total in the next meeting, but I do love to play teams 'under' after they scored 10+ runs, especially so when both teams did so, and having DiMuro calling balls and strikes just seals it for me.

Washington is 10-25 O/U in their last 35 games against a righty, and have a 1-5 O/U run going with Gonzalez on the hill against a division rival. Eleven of Gonzalez's last 16 starts overall have stayed 'under' the posted number,
and with Miami on a 1-5 O/U run off a loss and DiMuro's average runs scored per game coming in at just 5.7, there is plenty of margin of error on this play.

                  Best Bet: Under 9 runs

Los Angeles Dodgers At Los Angeles Angels MLB Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers have absorbed injuries to some of their best players and are still within a half-game of first-place in the National League West. They can overtake the Diamondbacks with a good week and will look for a road win against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Friday. The Angels have the best player in the major leagues in Mike Trout but he does not have a bunch if help around him.

The Angels are just a game over .500 and are a long way from contending for a wild card berth. The Angels need to really pick it up to have a shot at the playoffs and winning games like this against tough foes are essential. The Dodgers are the superior team but the Angels have the home field advantage so the odds figure to be pretty close one way or the other in MLB odds.

The MLB Baseball contest will be held at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The game will take place on Friday, July 6th, 2018, at 8:05 p.m. ET.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                    Odds Analysis

The odds have yet to be released but this figures to be a competitive contest. The Dodgers are 47-39 overall and have done a nice job with a 21-16 record on the road. The Dodgers don’t have to travel far for this contest and that takes away some of the built-in advantage of the home team.

The Angels are 44-43 overall but just in fourth place in the American League West as the Astros, Mariners and A’s have all put together nice seasons. The Angels are multiple games out of the playoff hunt and are under .500 at home this season. They need to start playing better in their friendly confines to have a shot at the postseason.

                    Probable Pitchers

The Dodgers are slated to send veteran right-hander Kenta Maeda to the mound. He is 5-5 on the season with a 3.36 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Maeda doesn’t get the credit as one of the National League’s better pitchers but he has been solid for a long time. He has been very good for the past six weeks, including allowing only two earned runs in his past two starts, which have totaled 14 innings. He has struck out 18 batters in that span and comes in throwing the ball extremely well.

The Angels have not yet decided on a starter for this contest. The choice they make should have a decent effect on the odds. Keep a close eye on what manager Mike Scioscia says regarding the spot in the hours before the contest. If the Angels are forced to use an unproven starter it could make them the underdogs in this one.

                    Injury Report

Angels star import Shohei Otani has resumed batting. He has been out for several weeks with an elbow injury and the two-way star is not yet pitching but he is back in the lineup. Otani has been a revelation this season in his first in the major leagues.

Otani is hitting .287 this season with six homers, 20 RBIs and an OPS of .890 in 45 games. It remains to be seen how much the elbow injury will affect his pitching status and if the ailment matters when he is swinging the bat. Ohtani is a big piece of the Angels’ future and the team is glad to have him back in the lineup as he has great natural power.

                    Free MLB ATS Picks

The Dodgers have to play on the road but they have a very good team and an underrated starter on the mound. Look for Maeda to show up with another solid start to quiet the Angels bats. Ohtani is back but he won’t have a huge effect on this game as Maeda will keep him off-balance.

The Dodgers are the choice to come away with this road win in MLB wagering. The “under” should be under consideration as the Angels could have trouble getting much of anything going offensively.

MLB ATS Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers 4, Los Angeles Angels 3

MLB Weekend Series Prices Best Bets

Last week my MLB weekend series plays did not go according to plan as both the White Sox and Indians fell short of their respective goals to cost me a couple of units. Chicago not taking two of three in Texas wasn't that surprising, but given they did manage to win the finale at +140ish odds, hopefully some of you were able to get some losses back.

Cleveland losing two of three in Oakland was more surprising, but this weekend the Indians get their chance at redemption as they host the A's for a three-game set. Cleveland was -150 on the road a week ago, but the price has doubled now that they are at home as it's in the -300 range for the Indians to get their revenge. Situationally it's a spot I like, but I'm not about to lay the -300 price tag.

There are two other series I'm looking to invest in this weekend and bounce back myself from a rough weekend set a week ago. This week we had many more four-game sets begin on Thursday so there is a bit less to go off of, but here are the plays I've already made.

                      L.A Dodgers (-155) vs L.A Angels (+135)

The L.A Angels have really taken a hard fall in the standings the past six weeks as they enter this weekend set with their cross-town rivals sitting at the .500 mark (44-44 SU) and in desperate need of some good things to happen. Going up against a talented, deep, and relatively hot team like the L.A Dodgers may not be the best place to get that done, but as desperate home underdogs in this series and no Clayton Kershaw to deal with in all likelihood, I'm willing to take a shot with the Halos this weekend.

The Angels are returning home after going through a 10-game road trip that saw them hit four different cities along the way. That type of grind can take it's toll on any team and the 1-3 SU run to end the trip started to look like the Angels just wanted to sleep in their own beds again. Well now they get to do that and I think that may be a small factor in the Angels potentially turning things around (long term) this weekend.

The Dodgers just swept the Pirates as their offense looks like the ultra-dangerous one that got them to the World Series last year, and giving them a DH to use now probably doesn't help the Angels in any regard. But the home side in this interleague rivalry has won five of the past seven meetings between the two, with the Angels themselves going 4-2 SU in the last six meetings overall. At plus money, at home, and with their backs against the wall in terms of getting back into the playoff hunt, the LA Angels have a lot potentially working in their favor this weekend and I'm willing to ride with them to get at least two games at the +135 price.

                      Odds per - Bookmaker.eu

Best Bet: L.A Angels to win the series (+135)

Colorado Rockies (+160) vs Seattle Mariners (-180)

Speaking of interleague matchups, we've got another one this weekend between the Rockies and Mariners in Seattle, with the Pacific Northwest's favorite baseball team nearly a 2-1 favorite to win at least twice. There is no question the 56-32 Seattle Mariners deserve to be laying a steep price like this, especially with their 30-15 SU record at home, but they are relatively “new” to interleague play this year with just a 1-1 SU mark. Those two games came all the way back during the first week of the season when they visited San Francisco, and while they won't have to play by NL rules here, I'm not so sure the Mariners aren't in a good 'bet against' spot here.

For starters, when the Mariners are playing a non-division rival after playing a division opponent like they are here (Seattle is coming off a series with the Angels this week), Seattle has just a 4-3 SU record in Game 1's of those series. That may be more applicable to the opener tonight, but if you are laying -180 on a team to win at least two of three, you kind of want a better percentage than that (and arguably better than the -135 they are priced at for Game 1) for the opener. A Mariners loss tonight would have Seattle backers needing a sweep over the weekend and I'm not sure this Colorado team will let that happen.

Secondly, Colorado comes into the weekend on quite the roll as they just swept the Giants and have now won six of their last seven overall. The Rockies are getting the bulk of those victories with great pitching and defense as they've allowed two runs or fewer in five of those seven games, and did it twice against the hot hitting L.A Dodgers too. Slow down a good hitting club like Seattle for the bulk of this weekend and the Rockies should have themselves another series win too.

Finally, Colorado is another NL team that's probably greatly helped by getting to add a DH to their lineup as they are a team built to win with offense. They've only played one road interleague series thus far in 2018, and that was in Texas a few weeks ago. Colorado didn't win the series (1-2 SU) but did manage to score 9 and 12 runs in two of the three games as the 13-12 loss was an epic collapse late. But the point is, this Rockies team can string together plenty of runs with a DH in their lineup, and with the success they've had on the mound lately, things seem to be brewing at just the right temperature for an upset. Give me the dog.

                      Odds per - Bookmaker.eu

Best Bet: Colorado to win series (+160)

As far as the other series' are concerned this weekend, here's how I see them breaking down

*Number of games won in brackets

                      Cincinnati (1) vs Chicago (2)
                      Philadelphia (2) vs Pittsburgh (1)
New York Yankees (2) vs Toronto (1)
                      Oakland (0) vs Cleveland (3)
Tampa Bay (2) vs New York Mets (1)
Boston (2) vs Kansas City (1)

                      • Midseason AL Predictions
                        July 5, 2018

Hard to believe, but we are now officially into the second half of the 2018 MLB season, which means that the All-Star Break and the trade deadline are just around the corner.

This is traditionally the time of year when the lesser teams start moving their better players to the big guns, and that can very often lead to some rather dramatic reversals of fortune in the second half. It’s the perfect time to dust off the old crystal ball and take a look into the future.

We will cover both leagues over the next couple of days, but let’s get started with the American League, the existing odds listed at YouWager.eu to win the Conference and what the future may hold for the teams in there.

American League Pennant 2018 - Odds to Win
                        -- Baltimore Orioles: +40000
                        -- Boston Red Sox: +350
                        -- Cleveland Indians: +700
                        -- Detroit Tigers: +20000
                        -- Houston Astros: +180
                        -- Los Angeles Angels: +3000
                        -- Minnesota Twins: +12500
                        -- New York Yankees: +180
                        -- Oakland Athletics: +12000
                        -- Seattle Mariners: +1200
                        -- Tampa Bay Rays: +30000
                        -- Toronto Blue Jays: +30000

                        AL Division Winners
The biggest battle in baseball right now is going on in the AL East, where the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are going toe to toe. Given the lead that these two have opened up on the rest of the division, it will be one of these teams that wins it.

The Red Sox have a 1-game lead over their bitter rivals right now, but I think it will be the Yankees who get the better of the second half, winning the division in the final few days of the season.

The AL Central is the worst division in the league, if not the entire MLB. The Cleveland Indians are the only team above .500 in there, and they already have an unassailable 11 ½ game lead at the top. This thing will be over with plenty of time to spare.

The defending World Series champions, the Houston Astros, have the lead in the AL West, but they are being pushed surprisingly hard by the Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners deserve some real credit for making this division a contest this season, but they are ultimately going to fall short. The Astros are maddeningly consistent, whereas the Mariners are prone to up and down streaks. Houston will win it comfortably in the end.

                        AL Wild Card
We cane safely rule out all teams in the Central, as there is no way they are going to be able to do enough in the second half to get into the Wild Card picture.

Given how the Yankees and Red Sox are playing, it’s a rather safe assumption that both of them will be in the postseason.

Since I have the Yankees winning the East, it will be the Red Sox in the Wild Card. The Mariners also look like a solid bet to be in the WC, as no other team in the West is really making a serious push.

                        AL Playoff Predictions
Assuming that the predictions made here are correct, the big question now is in regards who will represent the AL in the World Series. Repeating as a World Series winner is incredibly difficult, as there are a lot of things that need to go right for that to happen.

That said, my pick to win it all before the season began was the Houston Astros. They look as though they are going to be dominant for a few years, and I think they are a solid bet to get their second title in as many years.

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Astros are 25-0 SU as a home 170-plus favorite after a game in which they drew 5+ walks and it is not a series opener.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Royals are 0-16 SU as a 140+ dog off a home game in which they struck out at least ten times. Kansas City has lost these sixteen games by an average of a whopping 5.25 rpg.

                            • Mahle in control, Reds continue dominance over Cubs
                              July 7, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Tyler Mahle tossed one-run ball into the seventh inning and the Cincinnati Reds edged the Cubs 3-2 on Friday for their fifth straight victory over Chicago.

Adam Duvall and Scooter Gennett drove in runs as the Reds won for the 14th time in 18 games and ended the Cubs' six-game winning streak. Billy Hamilton, Cincinnati's No. 9 hitter, had three hits and leadoff man Jose Peraza had two.

Mahle (7-6) allowed five hits and struck out four over 6 2/3 innings to win his fourth straight decision. In his last seven starts, the 23-year-old right-hander has a 2.06 ERA.

Raisel Iglesias, Cincinnati's third reliever, got the final five outs for his 17th save in 20 chances.

Cubs starter Mike Montgomery (3-3) allowed three runs on six hits in five innings while walking two and hitting two batters.

                              TIGERS 3, RANGERS 1

DETROIT - Jordan Zimmermann denied Bartolo Colon's bid at baseball history, striking out 11 batters in eight innings as Detroit beat Texas.

Colon (5-6) as trying to become the winningest Latin-American pitcher in major league history. He remains tied with Dennis Martinez with 245 career victories.

He pitched well, allowing three runs - including homers by James McCann and JaCoby Jones - in an eight-inning complete game, but Zimmermann (4-0) was better. The Tigers right-hander allowed one run and four hits and struck out 10 or more for the first time since his no-hitter for Washington against Florida on Sept. 28, 2014.

Joe Jimenez pitched the ninth for his third save, helping the Tigers end a three-game losing streak by winning for just the third time in 17 games.

                              BLUE JAYS 6, YANKEES 2

TORONTO - Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer, Yangervis Solarte reached base four times and Toronto beat New York.

Smoak connected in Toronto's five-run second inning, when the Blue Jays batted around and put an early end to struggling right-hander Sonny Gray's latest outing.

Solarte went 3 for 4 with a walk as the Blue Jays won for the 12th time in 16 home games.

Aaron Hicks homered and had two RBIs in the opener of New York's 11-game road trip.

Gray (5-7) allowed five runs and six hits in two innings, his shortest start of the season and his third straight loss. Gray lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his previous start, matching a season worst by allowing six runs in an 11-0 loss to the division-leading Boston Red Sox.

Joe Biagni (1-5) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for his first win of 2018.

                              METS 5, RAYS 1

NEW YORK - Jose Bautista's grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted New York over Tampa Bay.

Todd Frazier walked and Devin Mesoraco singled to open the ninth against Chaz Roe (1-2) before Amed Rosario's sacrifice advanced the runners. Roe then got pinch-hitter Dominic Smith on a comebacker and intentionally walked Brandon Nimmo to load the bases.

Bautista homered to left field on the first pitch he saw for his first career walk-off blast. It was his sixth homer of the season and gave the Mets their third win in their last 18 games at home.

Tampa Bay had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth against New York closer Jeurys Familia (4-4) but came up short.

Jacob deGrom was once again stellar for the Mets, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out eight and issuing one walk over eight innings.

                              INDIANS 10, ATHLETICS 4

CLEVELAND - Carlos Carrasco returned from the disabled list - and returned to the win column - as Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion drove in three runs apiece, leading Cleveland to its fifth straight victory.

Carrasco (9-5) shook off two homers measuring over 900 combined feet in the first two innings and pitched into the sixth in his first start since being drilled on the right elbow by a line drive on June 16. He struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings and showed no rustiness despite the layoff.

Francisco Lindor stole home as the AL Central-leading Indians won their eighth straight home game. Cleveland is an MLB-best 56-21 at Progressive Field since the All-Star break last season.

Matt Olson and Dustin Fowler homered for the A's, who lost for just the second time in 10 games since June 25. Paul Blackburn (2-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, in four innings.

                              NATIONALS 3, MARLINS 2

WASHINGTON - Pinch-hitter Mark Reynolds led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run that lifted Washington past Miami.

Kyle Barraclough (0-3) fell behind Reynolds 3-0 and on 3-1 before the Nationals slugger sent a fastball into the visitor's bullpen in left-center for his eighth home run.

Sean Doolittle (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win as Washington defeated Miami for the 13th consecutive game dating to last season.

Miami starter Dan Straily lasted six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

Gio Gonzalez threw 114 pitches over five innings and gave up eight hits and four walks.

                              BREWERS 5, BRAVES 4

MILWAUKEE - Jesus Aguilar hit his 20th homer, rookie Freddy Peralta pitched six sharp innings and surging Milwaukee held off Atlanta.

Tyler Saladino also homered for the Brewers, who have won five straight to extend their NL Central lead to 2 1/2 games over the second-place Cubs.

After Peralta (4-1) departed, Atlanta rallied for three runs in the seventh off Jacob Barnes. But the Braves' rally faltered when they failed to score with two on and no out after Dan Jennings replaced Barnes, and then left two on with one out in the eighth against Jeremy Jeffress.

Corey Knebel worked around a one-out single in the ninth for his 11th save. Atlanta has lost a season-high four straight.

Mike Foltynewicz (6-5) went six innings, allowing six hits and striking out seven.

                              TWINS 6, ORIOLES 2

MINNEAPOLIS - Lance Lynn bounced back from two poor starts, Max Kepler homered and Minnesota won its second straight after a six-game skid.

Joe Mauer, Eddie Rosario, Jorge Polanco and Mitch Garver each had two hits for the Twins.

Caleb Joseph had a season-high three hits for the Orioles, losers of four straight and 11 of 12.

Lynn (6-7) allowed six hits and one earned run in six innings as he continued his up-and-down season.

In his first start since going on the disabled list June 23 with a left ankle sprain, Baltimore's Dylan Bundy (6-8) allowed nine hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. It is his second-shortest start of the season.

                              ASTROS 11, WHITE SOX 4

HOUSTON - Lance McCullers struck out a career-high 12 in seven strong innings, Evan Gattis hit a three-run homer in Houston's seven-run eighth and the Astros beat Chicago.

McCullers (10-3) didn't allow a hit until a single by Adam Engel with one out in the sixth, and he allowed just three singles and one run. He kept the White Sox off balance with a flurry of curveballs to outdo his previous career-best of 11 Ks.

The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Yuli Gurriel. Tim Federowicz hit a two-run double in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Chicago starter Reynaldo Lopez (4-6) yielded six hits and three runs while tying a career high with five walks in 4 2/3 innings to snap a two-game winning streak.

                              RED SOX 10, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Chris Sale struck out 12 in six innings, Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts homered, and Boston beat Kansas City.

Sale's 16-inning scoreless streak was snapped by Alcides Escobar's two-out RBI single in the second, but that was it for the skidding Royals against the ace left-hander. Sale (9-4) has allowed one run and 10 hits over 20 innings in his past three starts.

Boston stretched its win streak to four with its ninth victory in 11 games overall. It leads the majors with 60 victories and a .674 winning percentage.

Jason Hammel (2-11) allowed nine hits and eight runs in two innings.

                              PHILLIES 17, PIRATES 5

PITTSBURGH - Odubel Herrera and Andrew Knapp hit three-run homers, rookie Scott Kingery had a career-high four hits, and Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh for its fifth straight victory.

Herrera's shot into the right-field stands in the third inning off Trevor Williams (6-7) pushed the Phillies' lead to 5-1. Knapp's blast to left capped a seven-run seventh, making it 14-4 and helping Philadelphia improve to 5-0 against the Pirates this season.

The game lasted 4 hours, 30 minutes, tying the NL record for a nine-inning game set on June 24, 2016, by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

Edubray Ramos (3-0) retired both batters he faced in the fifth inning after being activated from the disabled list before the game.

                                11) Pete Carroll is going into his 9th season in Seattle, but he’ll have two new coordinators this season; Mike McCarthy has been in Green Bay for a dozen years, but he’ll have two new coordinators this season, too.

                                10) Over was 13-3 in Falcon games in 2016, 2-13-1 last year. Over is 21-11 in Washington games the last two years.

                                9) Baltimore Ravens went 9-7 LY, missing playoffs for 3rd year in row when their defense gagged at end of a 31-27 home loss to Cincinnati in Week 17, giving up a 49-yard TD pass in the last minute.

When an NFL team is +17 in turnovers, +14 in sacks, scores eight TD’s on defense/special teams (T1 in NFL) and doesn’t make the playoffs, that not good.

                                8) Vikings, Patriots had similar profiles last year; they both won despite not forcing many turnovers (Minn 19, NE 18), but rarely turning ball over themselves (Minn 14, NE 12).

                                7) Teams who turned ball over the most LY: Browns 41, Broncos 34, Dolphins 29.

Teams who turned ball over the least: Chiefs 11, Patriots 12, Vikings/Raiders 14.

                                6) Teams with the most takeaways LY: Ravens 34, Jaguars 33, Lions 32, Eagles 31.

Teams with the least takeaways LY:

                                5) Jets, Raiders were only NFL teams LY to not score a TD on defense or special teams.

                                4) Carolina Panthers were 11-5 LY, 8-1 in games decided by 8 or fewer points, 4-0 in games decided by 3 or fewer points.

Norv Turner as the Panthers’ new OC will be fascinating, how he utilizes Cam Newton.

                                3) Chargers went 9-7 LY, but were 1-4 in games decided by 3 or fewer points, losing three of those games during their 0-4 start, when the Bolts’ kickers screwed up in key spots. Chargers used four different kickers last year.

                                2) Dak Prescott loses his top two red zone targets from LY, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. Dallas has only three players on its team who are 30+ years old.

                                1) Alex Smith is a QB who doesn’t take as many chances as most QB’s, so his teams don’t turn the ball over as much- they had 11 turnovers LY, least in league. but Smith is in Washington now, and rookie QB Mahomes (1 start LY) is the Chiefs’ QB.

Its not inconceivable that their giveaway total could double this season; 19 of 32 NFL teams turned the ball over 22+ times LY.
