    • LEADING OFF: Red Sox sluggers feast on KC, Severino dominant
      July 6, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

      SOX SEEING DEAD RED

A couple of Boston's top hitters could be in line for a big weekend in Kansas City. Heading into the series opener Friday night, Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez and Mitch Moreland had gone a combined 15 for 27 (.556) with six home runs in three games against the Royals. The trio will have another opportunity to feast on Kansas City pitching on Saturday night when 22-year-old rookie Brad Keller takes the mound for the Royals. Keller has a 2.09 ERA in 56 innings this season and is making his seventh start.

      RAY'S REBOUND

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Robbie Ray looked sharp during his first start since missing two months with an oblique strain, throwing six scoreless innings in a win over Miami. Ray wasn't nearly as effective in his last start when he allowed six runs in five innings against St. Louis. He is hoping to bounce back when he takes the mound against the San Diego Padres.

      CY SEVERINO?

New York Yankees ace Luis Severino made the jump to Cy Young Award contender last season, finishing third in the American League voting after posting a 14-6 record and 2.98 ERA. The 24-year-old right-hander has been even better this season, leading the AL in wins (13) and ERA (1.98). Severino will try to add to his stellar resume and help New York keep pace with Boston when he takes the mound at Toronto.

      PRIMED PAXTON

Seattle's James Paxton has experienced plenty of success this season, like his no-hitter against Toronto on May 8. The left-hander had his best start since the no-hitter in his last outing, striking out 11 while pitching eight innings of two-hit ball in a 1-0 win over Kansas City. Paxton will try to continue his breakout season when the Mariners hosts the Colorado Rockies.

                    Road Struggles

The road has been very friendly to the defending champions, as the Houston Astros are the only team in Major League Baseball with a sub-3.00 ERA away from home this season. Obviously, the teams in the Top 5 are clubs contending for postseason spots, while the teams in the Bottom 5 are those which you need to fade on the road. They're not too great at home, either, for that matter. The four worst teams on the list also have a run differential of -112 or worse.

                    Team Record Team Record

                    Looking Ahead

                    Saturday, July 7

The Padres and Diamondbacks will continue their series in the desert on Saturday evening. The Snakes won 3-1 in Friday's game, avenging a 6-3 loss in the series opener. The Padres have struggled on the road, going 3-10 over their past 13 games on the road. They're also a dismal 5-16 in their past 21 against left-handed starting pitchers, while going 1-6 in the past seven against teams with a winning overall mark. San Diego has enjoyed success when Tyson Ross is on the mound, however, going 7-3 over his past 10 outings while going 5-2 in his past seven on the road. The Diamondbacks are in a swoon again, dropping six of their past seven while going 1-9 in their past 10 at home. They turn to LHP Robbie Ray to snap the team out of its funk. They're 21-8 over his past 29 starts, while going 16-5 in his past 21 against the NL West.

The Rangers and Tigers hook up in the Motor City, and it might be one of the last for Cole Hamels in a Texas uniform with the team expected to be sellers at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Everything would be just fine if the southpaw just made all of his starts on the road. Look at his overall stats, 4-7 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.30 WHIP isn't very good on the outset. But while he is 1-6 with a 5.83 ERA, 14 homers allowed and a .279 opponent batting average over 54 innings in nine home starts, he has been outstanding on the road. He is 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA, just six homers allowed in 48 1/3 innings while the opponents have hit just .203 against him in eight starts. The Rangers are also 8-3 in their past 11 against AL Central foes, and 12-4 in their past 16 against a team with a losing overall mark. The Tigers snapped a 12-game losing streak on grass in Friday's game, winning 3-1. Mike Fiers could keep them rolling, as they're 6-2 over his past eight starts and 6-1 in his past seven at home.

Friday's Texas-Detroit game was an 'under' result, snapping a 5-0-1 streak with the 'over' across the past six meetings. The Rangers are 9-2 in their past 11 trips to Comerica, while going 17-6 in the past 23 meetings overall. The under might be the play, as the under is 10-3-1 in the past 14 for Texas on the road, while going 12-3-1 in the past 16 for Hamels away from home. The under is 8-2 in Detroit's past 10, while going 5-0-1 in the past six at home. The under is 6-1-1 in Fiers' past eight overall, and 4-0-1 in his past five at home.

                    Weather Report
The winds will be gusty from right to left at Target Field from 13-16 mph, as if the Orioles needed any more obstacles against the Twins. The winds will be blowing in for the A's-Indians matchup at Progressive Field, knocking down long balls with a 13-16 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate. The good news is that precipitation isn't in the forecast, and those are the only two trouble spots across baseball.

                    Sunday, July 8
The Marlins will face RHP Tanner Roark and the Nationals in the series finale. Many of the big guns in the Miami offense haven't had a lot of success against Roark. OF Starlin Castro is hitless in 13 career at-bats against Roark, while 1B Justin Bour is just 5-for-29 (.173) with eight strikeouts. However, he has racked up three homers against the righty. C J.T. Realmuto has enjoyed facing Roark, going 10-for-26 (.435) with two doubles and four RBI. INF Martin Prado has also enjoyed Roark, going 10-for-23 (.435) with a homer, five RBI and a 1.045 OPS.

The Freeway Series final will be under the lights on ESPN, and the Dodgers are expected to use LHP Alex Wood, while the Angels will roll with LHP Andrew Heaney. The Angels snapped a four-game winning streak by the Dodgers, taking the opener by a 3-2 score against Kenta Maeda. The 'under' result also put a four-game 'over' streak to bed for the Dodgers. The Dodgers have been on fire on the road, heading into Saturday's game with a 13-4 record away from home. However, they haven't had a lot of success heading east on the Freeway, winning just once in the past seven trips in Anaheim heading into Saturday's contest.

Wood is 2-3 with a 4.04 ERA on the road across 42 1/3 innings over eight starts. It's a huge departure from last season when he was 7-1 with a 2.24 ERA in 13 outings away from home. Heaney hasn't had a lot of success in his brief encounters against Dodger Blue. He is 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA over 10 1/3 innings across two starts vs. LAD since the start of the 2015 season.

                    Weather Report
Like Saturday, winds will also be in the forecast for Sunday's series finale between the Orioles and Twins. The wind will be howling from 13-16 mph out to left field, but there is no precipitation in the forecast. The winds will be howling from 16-19 mph from home plate to the left-center field power alley for the Cardinals-Giants battle. Again, there is no precipitation in the forecast for any MLB city except for Houston, and they have a retractable roof. Enjoy the pleasant weather.

                      • Gibson in control, leads Twins past woeful Orioles
                        July 7, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Mark Reynolds homered twice and drove in a career-high 10 runs, Max Scherzer won for the first time since June 5, and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 18-4 on Saturday night.

Washington has won three straight and scored a combined 35 runs since calling a players-only meeting on Wednesday after falling under .500 for the first time since May 2.

Reynolds (5 for 5) tied his career high for hits and equaled the Nationals' RBI record.

Scherzer (11-5), who was 0-4 in his previous five starts, pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits - three of which were home runs. The Nationals had been shut out in three of Scherzer's previous five starts.

Miami starter Wei-Yin Chen (2-6) lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits.

                        DODGERS 3, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Ross Stripling pitched another gem and Justin Turner drove in two runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a win over the Angels.

Stripling (7-2) is making a strong case to make the NL All-Star team with another terrific outing. He allowed just one run and three hits - all by Mike Trout - in six innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked none, and lowered his ERA to 2.14.

After blowing a save opportunity on Friday night, Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 24th save.

Turner hit a two-out single in the fifth inning off Taylor Cole (0-1) to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.

                        RED SOX 15, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Andrew Benintendi homered, doubled, walked a career-high four times and scored four runs, and Boston routed Kansas City.

Mookie Betts had four hits, raising his American League-leading average to .343. Ten Red Sox players had RBIs as they scored a season high in runs. They scored 11 runs after the sixth inning.

Xander Bogaerts had three RBIs for the Red Sox, who have won five straight and 12 of their past 15.

Heath Hembree (4-1) worked 1 1/3 hitless innings to pick up the victory. Jason Adam (0-2), the third of seven KC pitchers, took the loss. Catcher Drew Butera got the final out in his sixth career relief appearance and his first since 2016.

                        TWINS 5, ORIOLES 4

MINNEAPOLIS - Kyle Gibson recovered from a rough start to throw seven innings, and Max Kepler homered in his second straight game to lead Minnesota past Baltimore.

Bobby Wilson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Twins, who won their third in a row.

Gibson (3-6) allowed three runs in the first inning - including a two-run homer by Chris Davis - but only gave up two hits after that while striking out nine. It was Gibson's highest strikeout total since fanning 10 batters on April 26 against the New York Yankees.

Kepler's solo shot off Kevin Gausman sparked a three-run fifth that tied it. Wilson's two-run double off Miguel Castro (2-5) in the sixth gave Minnesota the lead for good.

The team with baseball's worst record, meanwhile, lost its fifth in the row.

Trevor Hildenberger worked a scoreless eighth for the Twins. Jace Peterson's RBI double off Fernando Rodney pulled the Orioles to 5-4, but Rodney got Tim Beckham on a grounder to short to convert his 19th save in 24 chances.

                        CUBS 8, REDS 7

CHICAGO - Javier Baez homered and had four hits - including a game-tying infield single in the eighth - and Chicago rallied from a five-run deficit.

Anthony Rizzo's RBI groundout capped a four-run eighth inning for Chicago, which has come from behind in each of its last eight wins.

Eugenio Suarez homered and Billy Hamilton added three hits and three stolen bases for Cincinnati, which had its five-game winning streak against the Cubs snapped.

Randy Rosario (4-0) allowed two hits in 2 1/3 innings to get the win. Brandon Marrow worked the ninth for his 20th save.

Jared Hughes (2-3) took the loss, part of three Reds relievers who allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings.

                        PHILLIES 3, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH - Nick Williams, Scott Kingery and Jorge Alfaro drove in runs on consecutive at-bats in the seventh inning to help first-place Philadelphia win its sixth straight.

Jake Arrieta (6-6) worked around six hits with the help of eight strikeouts to hold the Pirates to two runs over seven innings.

Pirates starter Jameson Taillon (5-7) was charged with all three runs. He had allowed just two singles coming into the seventh. He struck out eight and walked none.

Starling Marte singled and scored in the first and homered in the second as part of a three-hit afternoon to stake the Pirates to an early lead.

Victor Arano worked around a leadoff double in the ninth for his second save.

                        CARDINALS 3, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO - Carlos Martinez pitched seven effective innings for his third consecutive win and St. Louis beat San Francisco.

Martinez (6-4) allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts and did not walk a batter for the third time this season. The right-hander also drove in the Cardinals' first run with an RBI double in the third.

Jordan Hicks allowed a run in the eighth and Bud Norris retired three batters for his 17th save.

Brandon Belt had three hits and drove in both runs for the Giants. San Francisco has been held to two runs or fewer in five of its last six games.

Jeff Samardzija had an uneven outing in his first start since May 29. Activated off the disabled list before the game, Samardzija (1-5) gave up three runs in five innings and repeatedly pitched with runners on base.

                        BRAVES 5, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE - Anibal Sanchez pitched effectively into the seventh and Freddie Freeman added three hits, lifting slumping Atlanta over Milwaukee.

Sanchez (4-2) retired 19 in a row at one point to help snap Atlanta's season high four-game skid. He exited with two outs in the seventh after being hit by a liner on his right hip.

Atlanta got to Brewers spot starter Aaron Wilkerson (0-1) early to end Milwaukee's five-game winning streak. Wilkerson had taken the rotation turn of Brent Suter, who went on the 10-day disabled list with left forearm tightness on Friday.

Sanchez struck out six in a row at one point. But after two easy outs in the seventh, his day ended quickly following a walk to Hernan Perez.

                        TIGERS 7, RANGERS 2

DETROIT - Nicholas Castellanos homered as part of a seven-run first inning for Detroit, and the Tigers cruised past Texas.

Cole Hamels (4-8) retired only two batters for the Rangers in his shortest start since 2010, and Adrian Beltre had a home run taken away when Detroit's JaCoby Jones made a spectacular catch in left-center field.

Mike Fiers (6-5) allowed a run and five hits in six innings. He struck out six with one walk.

Rougned Odor hit a solo homer for Texas immediately after Beltre was robbed by Jones. Shin-Soo Choo doubled twice for the Rangers to extend his on-base streak to 46 games, tying Julio Franco's club record set in 1993.

Niko Goodrum had four hits for the Tigers.

                        YANKEES 8, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO - Luis Severino pitched five innings to earn his major league-leading 14th win, Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge each hit solo home runs, and New York beat Toronto.

Severino (14-2) won his fifth straight start, allowing three runs and five hits. Two of the hits were home runs, marking the first time this season that Severino has allowed more than one homer in a game. He has allowed three earned runs or less in 16 consecutive starts.

Jonathan Holder, David Robertson, Dellin Betances each worked one inning and Aroldis Chapman got the first out of the ninth before leaving with an apparent injury. Chasen Shreve finished for New York, giving up a solo homer to Aledmys Diaz.

J.A. Happ (10-5), a potential trade target for the Yankees, had a dreadful audition. He allowed six runs and four hits in 2 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the season.

                        RAYS 3, METS 0

NEW YORK - Blake Snell blanked the Mets over a career-high-tying 7 1/3 innings, Wilson Ramos drove in a pair of runs and Tampa Bay downed New York.

Snell (12-4) struck out nine, scattering six hits and three walks while lowering his ERA to 2.09. The lanky lefty has yielded two runs or fewer in nine of his last 10 starts and is 4-0 with an 0.63 ERA over his last four outings, two against the Astros.

Steven Matz (4-6) continued his recent surge, charged with one run on five hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings - striking out five. The Long Island native has allowed four earned runs across his last his three starts, a span of 18 2/3 innings.

Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save in 13 chances.

                        ROCKIES 5, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE - Noel Cuevas hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning among his three hits to lead Colorado to a win against Seattle.

Carlos Gonzalez added a double and a run-scoring single for the Rockies, who have won five in a row.

Jean Segura homered for the Mariners, who came into the series having won nine of their last 10, but have now lost two in a row.

Seattle starter James Paxton (8-3) lost for the second time in three starts, allowing four runs and seven hits in seven innings. It was the third time in four starts Paxton allowed at least that many runs and hits.

Reliever Scott Oberg (2-0) earned the win by throwing a perfect sixth inning, striking out two.

                        ASTROS 12, WHITE SOX 6

HOUSTON - Yuli Gurriel and Alex Bregman each homered and Charlie Morton won his 11th as Houston beat Chicago for its fifth straight win.

Morton (11-2) allowed five runs and five hits with eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander has won four of his last five starts.

James Shields (3-10) allowed a season high-tying eight runs on a season-high 10 hits with nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for the White Sox, who have lost four straight. Shields had allowed one run over his prior two starts.

Gurriel, who also had an RBI single in the eighth, hit a three-run homer to left field to increase Houston's lead to 4-0 in the third inning.

                        ATLETICS 6, INDIANS 3, 11 innings

CLEVELAND - Stephen Piscotty hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the 11th inning and Oakland Athletics past Cleveland.

Matt Chapman, who had a career-high four hits, scored later in the frame on Jonathan Lucroy's grounder to complete the A's comeback victory and make a winner out of closer Blake Treinen (5-1).

Oakland won for the ninth time in 11 games since June 25 and snapped the Indians' home winning streak at eight. Josh Tomlin (0-5), who was Cleveland's sixth pitcher, allowed all three runs in the 11th.

Corey Kluber tossed seven shutout innings, but was denied in his bid to become the first Indians pitcher with 13 wins before the All-Star break since Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry had 15 in 1974.

                          **************************

                          Sunday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

                          13) It is possible that I watch too much TV; wore out my damn remote control. Seriously.

The 0 and the 4 buttons don’t work anymore; DirecTV sent me a new one, which better get here pretty soon.

                          12) Colts’ QB Andrew Luck lost his wallet recently; a guy found it, and returned it to Colts’ HQ, without taking anything out of it. Honorable guy.

For his honesty, Luck gave the guy a signed football; throwing in some game tickets or a signed jersey/helmet might’ve been good, too. Everyone is happy, which is the main thing.

                          11) NBA Summer League in Las Vegas is very popular; the first game of the day is usually in the girls’ gym, Cox Pavilion, and it always almost full for the first game.

Once the day gets started, they’ll have two games going at once; the best move, if you don’t care which game you’re watching, is to walk down the hall to the Thomas & Mack Center and stretch out in the big arena— lot more room, and closer to the concession stands, which are pretty good.

                          10) Did I mention it was supposed to be 110 degrees in Las Vegas Friday? So for $38 or so, you get solid entertainment all day while staying cool. Cheaper than playing video poker all day.

                          9) I’ve told this story here before, but few years ago, I’m sitting in Cox Pavilion by myself watching the summer league, listening to conversations around me. For a solid hour, not one of the conversations were in English.

GM’s from basketball leagues all over the world are in Las Vegas, looking for players to help their teams next season. Once spent an hour talking to an agent whose clients were all players who played overseas. Guys still make six figures playing ball internationally.

                          8) Indiana Pacers lost their summer league opener 92-89 to Houston Friday; they were 19-33 on the foul line; you wonder why Doug McDermott makes $7M a year? Shooters are always welcome.

                          7) This is going to look strange; Tony Parker signed a 2-year, $10M deal to go to the Charlotte Hornets. Parker played for San Antonio the last 17 seasons.

Dwight Howard was bought out by the Nets, signs a 2-year, $11M deal with the Wizards.

Zach LaVine signed a 4-year, $78M offer sheet with Sacramento- Bulls matched it.

                          6) Guy that owns the NHL’s Florida Panthers is selling his NYC mansion for a mere $88M, thats million, with an M. Place looks more like a museum than a house.

                          5) There is a grocery store on East Flamingo Rd in Las Vegas, Smith’s Food King, with a bar inside it. This is an excellent idea. Wife shops, husband drinks, marriages are happier.

                          4) Orlando Magic’s summer league team had five practices in three days before the summer league began; they’ll practice once a day on their off-days until summer league is over.

                          3) University of Houston hired Robert Boudwin as assistant AD for marketing and event presentation; he spent two decades as the Houston Rockets’ mascot “Clutch the Bear”

                          2) This makes no sense; major league base coaches have to wear batting helmets on the field, but watch when a team has a runner on 2nd base- the third base coach will stand halfway between home and third, to get a better angle on a ball hit to the outfield.

This is totally unsafe; the third base coach shouldn’t be allowed to be closer to home plate than the coaches’ box. I mean, if you care about safety and all.

                          1) Bartolo Colon and Jamie Moyer are only pitchers in MLB history to allow a home run to 300 different players; this week James McCann became the 300th player to homer off Colon.

                          • LEADING OFF: Lester eyes NL-best 12th win, A's stay hot
                            July 7, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

                            CHICAGO'S ACE

Jon Lester has put together some ace-worthy seasons during his 13-year major league career, including four All-Star appearances and a runner-up finish in the Cy Young voting two years ago. The Chicago Cubs left-hander is in the middle of what might prove to be his finest season so far, and he'll look to become the National League's first 12-game winner when he takes the mound against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. Lester is 11-2 with a 2.25 ERA this season, and he's won his last seven starts - including going 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA during June.

                            GRADE-A OAKLAND

The Oakland A's downed Cleveland 6-3 in 11 innings on Saturday, winning for the ninth time in their last 11 games and for the 15th time in their last 19. Oakland sits at a season-high nine games over .500 and will try and stay unbeaten for a seventh straight series when it closes out its series with the Indians. Brett Anderson (0-2, 7.63) starts for the A's, and Shane Bieber (4-0, 2.97) goes for Cleveland.

                            GOING GREINKE

Arizona starter Zack Greinke has turned around his season since posting a 5.04 ERA in April and is 9-5 with a 3.35 ERA overall, including 112 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings. The Diamondbacks right-hander will take the mound against the San Diego Padres, and he comes in having allowed only two runs in his last three starts combined - a span of 19 2/3 innings.

                            RICK'S REBOUND

Rick Porcello struggled mightily to follow up his 2016 Cy Young award-winning season a year ago, finishing a disappointing 11-17 with a 4.65 ERA. The Boston right-hander has returned to form this year with a 10-3 record and 3.57 ERA, and he'll be on the mound when the Red Sox close out their season series with the Kansas City Royals.

                            OZUNA'S OUTAGE

Since winner the NL's Player of the Week award last month, St. Louis outfielder Marcell Ozuna has been in a prolonged funk - going 15-for-71 (.211) and failing to hit a home run during that stretch. The Cardinals left fielder was the prized offseason acquisition in a trade from Miami, coming off a season in which he hit .312 with 37 home runs and 124 RBIs. This year, Ozuna is hitting .275 with 10 homers and 46 RBIs in 83 games.
