          — Montreal Alouettes traded for Johnny Manziel, who never played for Hamilton.

          — All three Giants-A’s games this weekend were sold out at the Coliseum.

          — Pirates are on a 9-game win streak, are contending in Wild Card race.

          — Tobias Harris turned down an $80M contract extension from the Clippers; he averaged 18.6 ppg LY, playing for Pistons/Clippers. Takes onions to turn down $80M.

          — “In 18 years in Dermatology, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in an adult.” This from Rany Jazayerli, an actual dermatologist, talking about Noah Syndergaard’s viral infection.

          — If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
AL: Boston-Cleveland-Houston. Wild Card: Seattle @ New York
NL: Phillies-Cubs-Dodgers. Wild Card: Braves @ Brewers

          Quote of the Day
“I won’t lie. I had too much to drink last night.”
Golfer Eddie Pepperell, on what he did Saturday night in Scotland

          Monday’s quiz
Where did former NFL QB Jay Cutler play his college football?

          Sunday’s quiz
Ted Williams holds the major league record for reaching base safely in the most consecutive games, 84 games in a row

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is most famous for playing for the Lakers, but he started his NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks.

          ************************

          Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

          13) Mike Shildt is the interim manager of the St Louis Cardinals; his first job in baseball a long time ago was as a clubhouse attendant for Charlotte in the Southern League.

In the summer of 1980, one of his jobs was to shine Cal Ripken Jr’s shoes.

          12) Ken Rosenthal and MLB Network research came up with this item:

Of all the baseball teams ever that were 60-40 or better thru 100 games, the ’54 Brooklyn Dodgers had the worst run differential (+14).

Right now, Seattle Mariners are 60-40, with a +1 run differential.

          11) Mets’ P Noah Syndergaard goes on 10-day disabled list with hand, foot and mouth disease; this is a real thing that is a viral infection characterized by sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet. No bueno.

          10) A GoFundMe page was started to help Washington Nationals assistant GM Doug Harris with medical costs as he battles leukemia; the owner of the Nationals is worth $5.2B, thats BILLION, with a B. How about picking up the tab there, Mr Lerner? Its probably tax deductible.

          9) Good college hoop tournament in Las Vegas Thanksgiving weekend; North Carolina, UCLA, Michigan State, Texas. I’m assuming it is at T-Mobile Arena.

          8) Phillies’ 1B Carlos Santana is hitting only .209, but he’s walked 76 times and has a .350 OB%. He’s knocked in 15.4% of baserunners, only 25 of 44 from 3rd base.

Last four years, when he was in Cleveland, Santana knocked in 13.1%, 13.8%, 13.8%, 13.4% of baserunners— he’s not a great RBI guy. Maybe he should bat leadoff.

          7) Golfer Zander Lombard was in contention at the British Open Sunday, before shooting an 82 in the final round. Coming into the Open, Lombard had missed 13 of his previous 15 cuts.

          6) Is it possible the LA Chargers have no analytics people working for them? Can’t find any of them listed in their media guide. In this day and age, that would be unusual.

          5) Cubs’ Hall of Famer Ernie Banks was famous for saying “Lets play two!!”; in his career, Banks played in both ends of 318 doubleheaders.

          4) I’ve never heard of Augusta State in any sport except golf; they won the national title in 2010 and 2011— Patrick Reed played there. British Open champ Francisco Molinari would’ve played there, except he played well in a European Tour event and turned pro instead.

          3) Reliever Jeurys Familia is the 939th player to play for the Oakland A’s.

          2) I have no idea if who the President is effects the stock market or not, but these are facts and they are not is dispute:

January 20, 2009— Dow Jones was at 7,949
January 23, 2017— Dow Jones was at 19,827
July 22, 2018— Dow Jones is at 25,058.

          1) RIP to former Dolphins’ coach Tony Sparano, who passed away Sunday at age 56. He had been in the doctor’s office Thursday, complaining of chest pains. Too young, man. RIP

                  Dominating the Opposition

The Milwaukee Brewers have struggled inside the National League Central Division, posting a dismal 19-25 record, one of the major reasons they're 3 1/2 games off the pace behind the Chicago Cubs. However, they're 15-9 against the NL East, and 12-4 against the NL West this season. That's good news for the Brew Crew, as they host the Nationals for three games before heading out on an eight-game road trip to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Starting July 26, the Brewers have 14 in a row through Aug. 9 against West Division clubs.

Another Central Division foe, the Pittsburgh Pirates, have a nine-game winning streak heading into their interleague series opener in Cleveland on Monday. The Bucs could stay hot, as they're 10-2 in interleague games so far this season.

The New York Yankees have posted a 13-4 record this season against the American League Central Division. That's good news when looking ahead, as they have a four-game set with the visiting Kansas City Royals starting on Thursday night. On the flip side, the Kansas City Royals are just 3-15 against the AL East. While they have been just mediocre at 17-21 inside their own division, a four-game set against the Bronx Bombers is not what they need.

                  Looking Ahead

                  Monday, July 23

The lowly Orioles will host the first-place Red Sox at Camden Yards, and Kevin Gausman takes the ball for the home side. Gausman is 4-7 with a 4.33 ERA this season, with all four of those victories coming at home. He was tuned up in the first meeting in Fenway Park, allowing six earned runs, eight hits and two walks over just 4 2/3 innings in a loss on May 17. There are a number of Red Sox who feast on Gausman's pitching, including All-Star Mookie Betts. He is 15-for-32 (.469) with a double, three homers and seven RBI with a 1.309 OPS. J.D. Martinez is just starting to see Gausman on a more frequent basis, but he has excelled in their brief encounters. He is 5-for-10 (.500) with a homer and four RBI. Xander Bogaerts is also a solid .289 (11-for-38) wth a double, a homer and five RBI. At least Gausman will get relief against the catchers, and Sandy Leon and Christian Vazquez are a combined 0-for-23 with 12 strikeouts against the starter.

Miami's Jose Urena has a 2-9 record, but his ERA (4.39) and WHIP (1.22) are certainly not as poor as his record. Chalk it up to poor run support. He has also been on the short end every time at home, going 0-7 with a 4.26 ERA across 12 outings at Marlins Park. That's shocking since he has good stuff in his home park, whiffing 60 batters in 67 2/3 innings. He is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA in two outings against the Braves this season. On the flip side, LHP Sean Newcomb is 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings across two starts against the Marlins, and Miami is hitting just .125 against him so far.

Rangers LHP Cole Hamels has had his name bandied about in trade rumors, but he is still wearing Texas across his chest with about a week to go until the non-waiver trade deadline. He might not be against a deal anywhere else, as he has been atrocious at Globe Life Park. Hamels is 4-2 with a 2.93 ERA in 10 starts on the road, but just 1-6 with a 5.83 ERA across 54 innings over nine home outings with the opposition hitting .279 against him.

The Phillies host the Dodgers on Monday night at 'The Vault'. The Dodgers streak in with a 19-7 record in their past 26 road outings, and they're 20-6 in the past 26 against right-handed starting pitchers. They're also 14-3 in the past 17 road contests against teams with a winning record. The Phillies are 6-1 in their past seven at home, but they could be a bit sluggish after a day-night doubleheader on Sunday against the Padres. They're also 1-5 in the past six starts by Zack Eflin against the NL West.

                  Weather Report

The only thing that might cool off the Red Sox will be a drink from Mother Nature. Thunderstorms are forecast for Charm City, listed at 40 percent or greater for the entire evening. As you might expect, Philly is very close in proximity to Balto. and the same forecast applies. Both cities have winds blowing 10-13 mph from home plate to left field, so if the games are played they could be high scoring.

In Queens, the Padres and Mets might need the tarpaulin for the field, as the forecast calls for thunderstorms at 60 percent throughout the evening.

In Texas, it will be cooler than over the weekend against the Indians. The forecast for first pitch is listed at 101 degrees, down six from Friday's outing. There will be a hot wind blowing out to right field from 12-15 mph, aiding left-handed hitters.

                  Tuesday, July 24

The Braves and Marlins play a day game in Miami. Atlanta has posted a 21-13 record in day games this season, while Miami is 13-20. Julio Teheran might not be the best start to pitch in the matinee game, however, as he has a 5.12 ERA through 45 2/3 innings over eight starts during the daytime. He was also rocked for six earned runs, seven hits and three walks over five innings in a no-decision in his only start with the Marlins this season back on May 20. While Wei-Yin Chen has a sparkling 1.83 ERA at Marlins Park this season over seven starts, with the opposition hitting just .204 against him over 39 1/3 innings, he has a dismal 6.23 ERA in four day starts over 21 2/3 innings.

The Padres and Mets tangle in a scheduled battle of southpaws. The Padres are just 7-19 across their past 26 vs. LHP, and 16-36 over their past 52 on the road against lefties. They're just 1-4 in the past five against NL East foes, and 1-5 over Joey Lucchesi's past six appearances. While those numbers are pretty appalling, the Mets are equally bad. They're just 5-16 in the past 21 against losing sides, and 6-21 in their past 27 at home vs. LHP. They're also 0-6 in their past six against NL West teams, 0-5 in their past five vs. LHP and 2-8 in Jason Vargas' past 10 starts overall. The biggest winner might be 'over' bettors, as the total has gone over in six of the past seven meetings in this series heading into Monday.

In late-night action, the Giants and Mariners battle in another southpaw-on-southpaw fight. The Giants enter the new week with just one win in the past five outings, and they're 2-8 in their past 10 road games against left-handed starting pitchers. They're also 1-6 in the past seven overall against southpaws, while going just 2-5 in Andrew Suarez's past seven on the road. The Mariners have cooled off lately, winning just two of the past seven heading into the new week. They're also just 1-4 in the past five vs. LHP, and 1-6 in their past seven interleague battles. Seattle has been upended in each of the past four against winning teams. While the M's are 5-1 in James Paxton's past six at home against a team with a winning record, they're just 2-6 in his past eight interleague assignments.

                  Weather Report

The Red Sox and Orioles will be battling the raindrops, as the forecast calls for a 65 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms. Expect a postponement.

Just up the road in Philly, the weather isn't a mirror of Baltimore. The thunderstorm chances are 30 percent or less until 10 p.m. ET, so they should get it in, or at least play an official game. The Dodgers and Phillies will also see a jetstream of 11-14 mph blowing out to left field.

The Pirates and Indians also might be starting at a possible lengthy weather delay and/or postponement, with the forecast calling for 50 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms. There is a slight chance of rain in the Padres-Mets game, but the big story will be 14-17 mph winds blowing out to the left-center field power alley.

The Astros-Rockies game could also be bothered by storms, as there is a 40 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms in the Mile High City.

                    • Severino eyes No. 15, Utley back in Philly
                      July 22, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                      LOOKING FOR No. 15

Yankees ace Luis Severino (14-2, 2.31 ERA) tries goes for his major league-leading 15th win in the opener of a series at Tampa Bay. Severino is 6-0 with a 2.41 ERA over his last six starts, including three scoreless outings of at least 6 2/3 innings each. New York, 5-5 in its last 10 games, begins the day five games behind first-place Boston in the American League East.

                      FAREWELL TOUR

Former Phillies second baseman Chase Utley starts his final regular-season series at Philadelphia, where he helped the Phillies win the 2008 World Series, when the Los Angeles Dodgers come to town to open a three-game series. Utley announced July 13 he will retire from baseball at the end of this season, capping a 16-year career, to spend more time with his wife and two young sons. The 39-year-old made his name with the Phillies, earning five All-Star berths and winning four Silver Slugger awards before a trade to the Dodgers in August 2015 brought him back to his roots. He was born in nearby Pasadena and played at Long Beach Poly High and UCLA.

                      SURGING ALONG

Corey Dickerson looks to keep his recent power surge going as the Pittsburgh Pirates try for their 10th straight win in the opener of a series against the Cleveland Indians. Dickerson has hit five homers in the last four games, increasing his season total to 11. He also became the first Pirates player to homer in four straight games since Josh Harrison in 2014. Pittsburgh will send Trevor Williams (7-7, 4.36 ERA) to the mound against Cleveland ace Corey Kluber (12-5, 2.76).

                      STRUGGLING STAR

After an outstanding run heading into the All-Star break, Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt looks to snap out of a 1-for-12 slump since the midseason game when the Diamondbacks open a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Goldschmidt struck out out a whopping nine times in a three-game series against Colorado, including three times on Sunday. The All-Star first baseman was the player of the month for June after beginning the season with one of the worst and most extended slumps of his career.

                      DELAYED DEGROM

The New York Mets send All-Star ace Jacob deGrom (5-4, 1.68) to the mound in the series opener against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field. The right-hander, sporting the lowest ERA in the majors this season, had his start pushed back a day when the Mets were rained out in the finale of their Subway Series against the Yankees on Sunday night. Left-hander Eric Lauer (5-6, 4.87) starts for San Diego.

                      MAKING HIS DEBUT

Daniel Poncedeleon will make his major league debut for St. Louis in the opener of a series at Cincinnati. The right-hander underwent surgery last year to relieve pressure around his brain after he was hit in the head by a line drive while pitching for Triple-A Memphis. Luis Castillo (5-8, 5.49) is set to start for the Reds.

MLB Preview - Arizona Diamondbacks At Chicago Cubs

The Arizona Diamondbacks have enough talent to make a playoff run but a recent lull has left them outside of the current postseason picture. They are aiming to keep up with the Dodgers in the race for the National League West title and would love to pick up a key road win this week against the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs have ascended to the top of the N.L. Central and will aim to pull away from the Brewers and the rest of the pack. Chicago is looking like a World Series contender again and currently boasts the best record in the N.L. Both teams would love to pick up a victory in this matchup in MLB wagering.

The MLB Baseball contest will be held at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. The game will take place on Monday, July 23rd, 2018, at 7:05 p.m. ET. It will be nationally televised on ESPN.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                          Odds Analysis

The Cubs are 57-40 on the season with a run-differential of plus-106, which is easily the best in the National League. Chicago has gone 30-17 at home on the year and should be the favorite to come away with this victory.

The Diamondbacks are 53-46 overall and have a run-differential of plus-41, so they seem to be one of the better teams in the league as well. Arizona has gone 27-21 on the road this year and would love to pick up a road upset win in MLB betting.

                          Probable Pitchers

The Diamondbacks are expected to send All-Star left-hander Patrick Corbin to the mound. He is 6-4 on the season with a 3.24 ERA. Corbin has struck out 149 batters in 122 innings with a WHIP of 1.05 on the year. The Cubs have a really good offense but Corbin has been dealing all season and will aim to keep it in check.

The Cubs will be going with Luke Farrell who is making only his second start of the season. The Cubs had to adjust their rotation after Saturday’s doubleheader. The only start for Farrell this season was on June 23 when he gave up three runs in 2.2 innings. He has made six starts at Triple-A this season.

                          Key Stat

Four. That’s how many teams are within two games of each other for the two wild card spots in the National League, with the D-Backs in that group. They are also within two games of the Dodgers in the National League West. The best-case scenario is winning the division but the Diamondbacks would also be more than happy to get into the postseason as a wild card.

With so many teams battling for a couple of spots, it’s imperative for the D-Backs to find a groove. They have been struggling lately but have the ability to turn it around. The pitching is solid and the offense should improve in the second half with the return to health of A.J. Pollock and Steven Souza.

                          Free MLB ATS Picks

The D-Backs have a chance in this one with Corbin on the mound, and he matches up decently with a Cubs lineup that has several talented left-handers. This should be a competitive contest. Take the Diamondbacks to come away with a close win, which should pay off nicely in MLB betting lines.

MLB ATS Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks 5, Chicago Cubs 4

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                            13) When I was a little kid, my dad always brought the New York Daily News home from work with him; I remember reading Dick Young’s great columns and learning about sports.

As time went on, the New York Post passed the Daily News as a sports section, and Monday, the Daily News cut their sports staff from 35 people to only nine. Lot of people out of work; sad day.

                            12) More I think about it, geographic realignment would help baseball a lot.

Think about 18 Dodger-Angel games, Cubs-White Sox games, or Subway Series games every season; its not going to help every team that much, but it’ll reduce travel/travel costs and increase regional rivalries, which is good for the game.

Having two new teams will make scheduling so much easier, too. Don’t have to have interleague games every night, if hey do indeed keep the AL and NL intact

                            11) NFL players are getting aggravated because NBA guys make so much guaranteed money and football players don’t; we mentioned the other day, how Tobias Harris TURNED DOWN an $80M guaranteed deal with the Clippers. NFL guys have to be shaking their heads.

When the next NFL labor contract rolls around, negotiations will be contentious.

                            10) They had Big 14 football media day this week and 13 of the coaches show up in jacket and tie; Jim Harbaugh appeared in a polo shirt with baseball cap, both with the Michigan block M on them. Sometimes those interviews are fun to listen to; don’t often learn a whole lot- they sound like politicians, speaking words without actually saying much.

                            9) You go to the racetrack, and you forget how dangerous it is to be a jockey.

Hall of Famer Victor Espinoza fractured a vertebrae in an accident at Del Mar on Sunday ; he will miss the remainder of the Del Mar meeting.

Espinoza will have to wear a neck brace for the next six weeks, “more to remind him not to turn his head sideways suddenly”, according to his agent.

                            8) Baltimore Ravens had 30 draft picks the last three years, and 29 of them are still with the club, the only exception being a former Naval Academy QB who is doing his four years of service in the actual US Navy- they’re going to be a very young team.

                            7) Clemson gave basketball coach Brad Brownell a 6-year contract extension; Tigers made the NCAA’s last year, for first time since 2011.

                            6) Fernando Tatis Jr, the Padres’ #1 prospect, is out for the year after breaking his thumb. The 19-year old SS was batting .286 with 19 HRs, 19 steals at AAA El Paso.

                            5) David Payne Purdum posted on Twitter Monday that at Caesar’s Palace sports books, there were 64 bets made on the Red Sox-Orioles game; only one of the 64 was on Baltimore.

                            4) Diamond Sportsbook International (@betDSI on Twitter) posted odds on who the starting QB will be for these teams:

                            Alabama: Tagovailoa -230, Hurts +165
Ohio State: Haskins -600, Martell +370
                            Oklahoma: Murray -600, Kendall +370
                            Clemson: Bryant +130, Lawrence +160, Johnson +510, Brice +820

                            3) Reds 2, Cardinals 1— Young man named Daniel Poncedeleon made his MLB debut for the Cardinals in Cincinnati; he no-hit the Reds for seven innings, throwing 116 pitches, then was pinch-hit for in top of 7th inning.

St Louis blew a 1-0 lead in 9th inning, costing the kid a win in his MLB debut.

In 2016, Ross Stripling threw 7+ hitless innings in his MLB debut; he didn’t get a decision that night, either.

In 1967, a kid named Billy Rohr threw 8.2 hitless innings in his MLB debut in the Bronx, giving up a hit to Elston Howard with two outs in 9th inning of a 1-0 Boston win.

                            2) First five days after the All-Star Game are weird; lot of good pitchers struggled in their first start after the break, maybe because hitters are most rested after the four days off?

                            1) Nate Silver points out that the NBA started tracking games started in 1981-82; since then, Carmelo Anthony is only NBA player to play in 1,000+ games without ever once having come off the bench. Wouldn’t expect Anthony to be a 6th man at his next destination (Houston?)

                            • Surgery for Cespedes? Brewers lose SP
                              July 23, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

                              YO, YOU GOOD?

Yoenis Cespedes and the Mets are awaiting a report and recommendation from doctors after the slugger had an MRI on both feet Monday. Cespedes may need surgery to address calcification on both heels that has bothered him for 15 years, and he said recently that surgery would sideline him for 8-to-10 months. ''I guess what we're looking to find out is if it has progressed to the point where it's something that cannot be managed with the conservative treatment that we've been using,'' Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said.

Ricco said the Mets were aware of the foot problem when they acquired Cespedes from Detroit in July 2015. The 32-year-old has been treated with anti-inflammatory medication, stretching exercises and orthotics.

                              SOMETHING BREWING?

The Brewers were already rumored to be shopping ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline before starting pitcher Brent Suter said Monday he would need season-ending Tommy John surgery. The left-hander exited a start Sunday and was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament a day later, ending his season after a career-high 101 1/3 innings. He was 8-7 with a 4.80 ERA in 20 appearances, including 18 starts.

Milwaukee has already been without ace Jimmy Nelson all season, while Zach Davies and Junior Guerra are also on the DL, though both are expected to return soon. Manager Craig Counsell says he's confident in the five guys the Brewers have on-hand, but an arm might help Milwaukee as it chases the Cubs in the NL Central.

                              BIEBER VS BUCCOS

The Pirates offense is rolling, and Cleveland will ask rookie Shane Bieber to slow Pittsburgh's roll. The Bucs had averaged 6.3 runs per game while winning nine straight prior to Monday, and then they teed off on Indians ace Corey Kluber for seven runs in four innings in the series opener. Bieber (5-1, 3.53) ranks among the game's top rookies, though his ERA has risen by more than a run over his past four three starts.

                              BACK AT THE START

Kenta Maeda and Aaron Nola both return to the rotation after making their previous appearances out of the bullpen. The Dodgers' Maeda (7-5, 3.12) is coming off an unusual relief appearance July 15, facing two batters in the last game before the All-Star break to get a little work before an extended rest period. Meanwhile, Phillies ace Nola (12-3, 2.30) struck out two in a scoreless relief inning at the All-Star Game. He has allowed two-or-fewer runs in five straight starts.

                              • Who's Hot and Who's Not
                                July 23, 2018

                                Week of July 23rd

MLB is back in full swing after the All-Star break and while the time off was a nice reprieve for both the players and MLB bettors, it often marks the last significant time off for sports bettors the rest of the year with football right around the corner.

We've still got some time until then though, so let's look at some hot teams/trends for MLB teams coming out of the break and into their first full week of action for the 2nd half:

                                Who's Hot

Pittsburgh Pirates ML Bets (9-0 SU last nine)

It's not often that you see a baseball team that's won nine games in a row priced in the +240/250 underdog range, but that's precisely what we've got on Monday with the Pittsburgh Pirates in Cleveland to take on the Indians.

Pittsburgh went into the All-Star break on a roll having won six in a row, but the time off did nothing to squash that momentum as they swept Cincinnati in a three-game set over the weekend and scored at least 6 runs in all three victories. In fact, the Pirates have averaged 6.33 runs per game during this nine-game winning streak and have won seven of those nine contests by at least two runs.

Squaring off against Cleveland for three games to start the week won't be easy and will probably be the end of this Pirates run at some point, but I don't expect them to get swept either, and you really aren't going to get too many other opportunities to back a smoking hot team like Pittsburgh at +250 odds like we've got on Monday. I would expect Cleveland to be priced close to that range for all three of these games, so taking a long look at Pittsburgh ML wagers could be a great way to start your week.

'Overs' in both St Louis (9-1 O/U last 10) and Cincinnati (9-1 O/U last 10) games

As luck would have it, two of the best 'over' bets in baseball right now begin a three-game set against one another on Monday night with St Louis in Cincinnati to take on the Reds. St Louis is on a 9-1 O/U run – thanks in large part to Matt Carpenter and his absurd HR hitting prowess of late (he had 6 HR's from Thursday through Sunday) – and they begin this week in Cincinnati to take on a Reds team that just finished allowing at least six runs against in three straight losses to the aforementioned Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds are on a 9-1 O/U run themselves over their last 10 games, including three consecutive 'overs' vs the Cardinals in St Louis prior to the break.

So the question here is will these high-scoring games continue for both teams in this series or will we see a bit of regression to the mean? Betting percentages for Monday's contest already suggest that many are well aware of this 'over' trend for both sides with 90% + on the high side of the 9.5 total for Game 1, and it's tough to make an argument against it. But don't expect all three games between these two to cash 'over' tickets again, so maybe it's best to take more of a macro view here and wait to see if totals start to become a tad inflated by “getaway day” on Wednesday if the first two games still see plenty of runs.

                                Who's Not

Making money on Tanner Roark (Washington) starts – 5-14 SU, -12.63 units

No starting pitcher in all of baseball has lost bettors more units than Washington's Tanner Roark this year and he's slated to start the series finale vs Milwaukee on Wednesday. Roark has lost five consecutive starts for the Nationals, and it's been seven outings overall since he started a game that the Nationals won. Three of those five recent losses have seen Washington's opponents score in double figures, and it's not like Milwaukee isn't a quality team to couldn't do the same thing to Roark as well.

What makes this downturn the most interesting though is that many bettors out there (myself included) expect Washington to turn things around in a hurry during this 2nd half and climb back into the NL East lead. But when you've got one starter every five days seemingly working against that long-term view, it makes handicapping the Nationals that much tougher. You are never going to get that much value backing Washington in Max Scherzer or Stephen Strasburg starts, so it's really the other three guys where you've got to look to make some hay. And when one of those three guys (Roark) is the worst bet in baseball, it makes decision making awfully tough.

If you decide to pass on the Nationals with Roark starting and they win you'll be kicking yourself for not trusting the long-term view of this team, but if you do back them and they lose, you'll be kicking yourself for backing the worst pitcher (money wise) in all of baseball. It makes this streak probably the best one to sit back and wait on, even if it's only to protect yourself from going on tilt.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, Roark isn't the only big name from a potential playoff team that's been burning money all year. Others that have been just slightly better than him this year include the Cubs' Kyle Hendricks (-11.51 units), the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw (-10.81 units), Houston's Justin Verlander (-8.52 units) and Cleveland’s Mike Clevinger (-7.61 units).
