              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Eduardo Rodriguez, Boston Red Sox (3-0, 4.58 ERA, $713)

He may not have the best ERA of any starting pitcher in baseball (4.58). His WHIP is good but not "elite starter good" (1.21). The one stat that Eduardo Rodriguez brings to the table is the most important stat of all...team wins. "El Gualo" owns a team win/loss record of 7-0 this season and is the top pitcher in baseball in our Starter Money statistic at +7.13 units.

Rodriguez and the Red Sox are -190 favorites at home this evening against Daniel Mengen and the Oakland A's.

              Slumping:
Jose Berrios, Minnesota Twins (3-4, 4.50 ERA, $-137)

Twins righty Jose Berrios has had a rough go of it in his last four trips to the hill. Over his last four outings he is 1-3 with an ERA of 8.84, a WHIP of 1.7455, and he has allowed six home runs. We wonder if he's 100 percent healthy because he's not missing bats with only four total strikeouts over his last three starts.

Berrios looks to get back on track as a -120 favorite at home tonight against Jack Flaherty and the St. Louis Cardinals.

              Weather Watch

There is some slop in the baseball weather forecast for games being played in the northeast today. There is a chance of thunderstorms/rain in Washington, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Boston with the Phillies and Orioles looking like the highest POP at 85 percent during the middle innings. The game at Fenway Park between the A's and Red Sox could be late getting started with rain expected early but tapering off later in the evening.

There is a very nice hitter's wind of 13-15 miles per hour blowing straight out to center field tonight in D.C. where the Nationals are scheduled to host the Yankees. The total for tonight's game is currently set at 8.5.

              Ump of the Day

Mark Wegner will be calling balls and strikes tonight in Boston for the game between the A's and Red Sox and, if recent history is any indication, that is great news for the visiting Athletics. In Wegner's last 17 games as the home plate umpire the road team is a very tidy 14-3.

The Red Sox are big -190 favorites with the A's available at +180 tonight at Fenway Park.

              • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                May 15, 2018

Hottest team: Nationals (13-2 last 15)

Washington has overcome an 11-16 start of the season as the Nationals are coming off a successful 6-1 west coast swing. The Nats swept the Diamondbacks in Phoenix, while limiting Arizona to seven runs in four games. Washington has captured four consecutive series in spite of star outfielder Bryce Harper going 4-of-30 in his last seven games with only one home run.

The premiere showdown on Tuesday night takes place in D.C. as the Nationals host the Yankees in interleague action. Gio Gonzalez heads to the mound for the Nationals, as the southpaw has pitched well of late by allowing two earned runs in his past three outings (18 innings). Washington has won each of Gonzalez’s last two home starts, while the UNDER in 6-1 in his past seven outings overall. Gonzalez is dealing with a Yankees’ squad that owns a 19-3 record in its last 22 games, including a 6-1 mark on the road.

Coldest team: Mets (2-9 last 11)

It seems like a century ago that New York began the season at 12-2, as the Mets head into Tuesday’s action compiling a 7-16 record the past 23 games. In this stretch, New York has played in eight series and won only one, beating San Diego in two of three games in late April. The offense has dried up of late by scoring a total of eight runs in the past four games, which includes three runs in a ninth inning rally in a victory at Philadelphia last Friday.

The Mets host the Blue Jays in an interleague set at Citi Field as Noah Syndergaard takes the hill. Syndergaard is winless in his last three starts for New York, but he is coming off three consecutive one-run defeats, capped off by two losses as a favorite of -180 or higher. Syndergaard owns a solid 3.09 ERA with 54 strikeouts compared to 10 walks, but the Mets have compiled a 1-8 record in the last nine home games.

Hottest pitcher: Gerrit Cole, Astros (4-1, 1.43 ERA)

Several pitchers are putting together spectacular starts, but probably none better than Cole. After struggling to a 12-12 record and 4.26 ERA in his final season with the Pirates, Cole owns a miniscule 1.43 ERA in eight starts as a member of the Astros in 2018. Houston has won seven of his eight starts this season with the only loss coming to the Angels on April 23. Cole gets another shot at facing Los Angeles tonight as the right-hander is unbeaten in four road starts to go along with a 0.62 ERA away from Minute Maid Park.

Coldest pitcher: Yu Darvish, Cubs (0-3, 6.00 ERA)

Darvish was expected to be a key contributor to the Chicago rotation after helping the Dodgers to the World Series last season. However, the veteran right-hander has allowed at least four earned runs in four of six starts this season, while not lasting past the fifth inning in any of those outings. Darvish is making his first start since an 11-2 home loss to Colorado on May 2, as the Cubs own a 2-1 record in this three road appearances. The Cubs travel to Atlanta to face a hot Braves’ squad that won at Wrigley Field on Monday in a make-up game.

Biggest OVER run: Tigers (5-1-1 last seven)

Detroit’s lineup is built around slugger Miguel Cabrera, but the former Triple Crown winner has been sidelined since early May. The young Tigers’ roster is finding ways to score runs without Cabrera as Detroit has not only won three of its last four games against Seattle and Cleveland, but it has plated 16 runs in the past three contests. Francisco Liriano heads to the mound for Detroit in Tuesday’s matchup with Cleveland, as the southpaw scattered three hits and allowed two earned runs in six innings of a 2-0 defeat to the Indians last month.

Biggest UNDER run: Astros (9-1 last 10)

Houston may be in line for another UNDER with Gerrit Cole on the mound tonight, as the Astros held the Angels to two runs on Monday. However, the defending champions couldn’t get much offense going off Angels’ southpaw Andrew Heaney in a 2-1 defeat to end Houston’s short two-game winning streak. The loaded Astros’ rotation has allowed an amazing two runs or fewer in seven consecutive games, while the only OVER in this stretch came thanks to a 16-run outburst at Oakland on May 7.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Diamondbacks

Arizona still sits atop the NL West in spite of hitting the skids of late. The Diamondbacks have dropped six consecutive games, including five straight at home after getting swept by the Nationals this past weekend and Monday’s 7-2 defeat to the Brewers. Arizona’s offense has been non-existent in this cold streak by scoring two runs or less in four of the past five games, while facing a right-handed starter in each of those contests.

The D-backs will see another righty tonight as Jhoulys Chacin heads to the hill for Milwaukee. The Brewers have jumped out to a 4-1 record on their road trip after grabbing three of four at Colorado last weekend. Chacin has turned into a fantastic addition to the rotation as Milwaukee owns a 5-0 record in his past five starts, while the Brewers have scored at least five runs in each of those victories.

Arizona sends out its ace tonight looking to stop the bleeding as Zack Greinke seeks his fourth victory of the season. The former Cy Young winner picked up a no-decision in a 2-1 loss to Washington last Thursday, but scattered four hits and allowed one earned run in seven innings of work. Greinke has been lights out at Chase Field this season by compiling a 1.72 ERA in five home starts, while the D-backs own a 3-2 record in those games.

Betcha didn’t know: After beginning the season at 0-8 in series openers, the Rangers have responded with a 4-1 record in their past five Game 1’s. The latest victory came in last Friday’s 1-0 triumph at Houston as heavy +230 underdogs. Texas travels to Seattle to face a Mariners’ team coming off a win in a make-up game at Minnesota on Monday. The Rangers tallied only three runs in their three-game set at Houston, as Mike Minor heads to the mound tonight. Texas has fared well in Minor’s limited work on the road by compiling a 2-0 record, including wins at underdog prices of +140 at Toronto and +210 at Houston.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-180) at Angels

Biggest public underdog: Nationals (+105) vs. Yankees

Biggest line move: Padres (+115 to -105) vs. Rockies

                • LEADING OFF: Dodgers seek spark in Miami, Pollock hurt
                  May 15, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                  BLAH BLAH LAND

The struggling Dodgers (16-24) hope to jumpstart their season with a series against the lowly Marlins in Miami. Of course, Los Angeles was thinking the same heading into a weekend set against last-place Cincinnati, then the Reds pushed the Dodgers around in a four-game sweep. It was the first time LA was swept over four games by a team with a .300 or worse winning percentage since the Padres did it in 1969, per the Elias Sports Bureau. Alex Wood (0-3, 3.60) tries to end the Dodgers' skid at four in a start against Wei-Yin Chen (1-2, 10.22).

                  POLLOCK PROBLEM

Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock is set to see a hand specialist after spraining his left thumb diving for a ball Monday. The slumping Diamondbacks lost their sixth straight shortly after Pollock was pulled, and they'll have a hard time getting on track without him. He leads the club with a .293 average, 44 hits, 11 home runs and 33 RBIs. An All-Star in 2015, Pollock played only 12 games in 2016 after breaking his elbow on a slide just before the regular season, and he was out from mid-May until early July with a strained groin last season.

                  YU GOOD?

Yu Darvish pitches against the Braves aiming for his first victory since signing a $126 million, six-year contract with the Cubs in the offseason. Darvish (0-3, 6.00 ERA) is returning from the disabled list after fighting off a virus and hasn't pitched since allowing three homers and six runs in a loss to Colorado on May 2. The teams are playing in Atlanta a day after a 6-5 Braves' victory in a makeup game at Wrigley Field, making this the first time the Cubs will play an opponent on consecutive days in different cities since April 16-17, 1990.

                  DIVISION DUST-UP

First-place Houston's Gerrit Cole goes against Jaime Barria of the Angels, who are just a game back of the pace-setting Astros in the AL West. Cole has emerged as one of the AL's best pitchers (4-1, 1.43 ERA, 86 strikeouts and 30 hits allowed in eight starts). He'll face a high-powered offense featuring standout two-way rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani, who likely will DH after racking up 11 strikeouts on the mound Sunday in a victory over the Twins. Houston's starters have the top three ERAs in the league, led by Justin Verlander at a major league-best 1.21. Cole is second and Charlie Morton third at 2.03.

                  CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

Two of baseball's most prodigious power hitters are on display when Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees visit Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals in interleague play. Judge has knocked in 14 runs during a seven-game RBI streak. Harper homered Sunday night to help Washington finish a four-game sweep in Arizona. Both teams have been rolling, too. New York is 19-3 in its last 22 games, while the Nationals have won 13 of 15. Masahiro Tanaka (4-2, 4.66 ERA) pitches for the Yankees against lefty Gio Gonzalez (4-2, 2.22).

                  PINKIE OUT

Mariners star Robinson Cano is to be examined by a hand specialist in Philadelphia on Tuesday to see if surgery is necessary on the broken pinkie finger of his right hand. The eight-time All-Star broke the finger Sunday when he was hit by a pitch from Detroit left-hander Blaine Hardy. The Mariners placed Cano on the 10-day disabled list and recalled infielder Gordon Beckham from Triple-A Tacoma.

                    • Dodgers lose 5th straight against last-place team
                      May 15, 2018

MIAMI (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position against Wei-Yin Chen and four relievers and were beaten by a last-place team for the fifth straight game, losing to the Miami Marlins 4-2 Tuesday night.

The NL champions managed only five hits after being swept in a four-game series at home by woeful Cincinnati. Alex Wood (0-4) lost despite allowing only one earned run in six innings for the Dodgers (16-25), who are off to their worst start in 60 years. Miami (15-26) could pass them by sweeping the three-game series.

Nick Wittgren (2-0) entered in the fifth and worked 1 2/3 perfect innings to lower his ERA to 0.69. Brad Ziegler gave up a home run to Cody Bellinger in the ninth but earned his sixth save.

Dodgers infielders Justin Turner and Logan Forsythe were activated from the disabled list but couldn't spark the defending NL champions, who have scored 11 runs during their skid.

                      PADRES 4, ROCKIES 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Jordan Lyles came (1-1) within five outs of a perfect game and the first no-hitter in San Diego history before allowing Trevor Story's single.

Lyles then walked Pat Valaika and made way for Kirby Yates. Brad Hand got four outs to complete the one-hitter and earn his 12th save.

San Diego is the only major league that without a no-hitter. The Padres have played 7,858 games since their expansion season of 1969.

Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer in the first off German Marquez (2-5) and Christian Villanueva hit a two-run drive in the sixth against Christian Villanueva.

                      ATHLETICS 5, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Stephen Piscotty homered in his first at-bat after being reinstated from the bereavement list and saluted his late mother as he crossed home plate, helping lead Oakland in a game delayed almost two hours because of weather.

Piscotty, who returned to the A's Tuesday after missing four games to be with his family, drove an 0-2 pitch from Eduardo Rodriguez out to left in the second inning. He slowly made his way around the bases, then after rounding third placed his right hand over his heart and patted it with a glance to the sky in tribute to Gretchen Piscotty, who died May 6 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Daniel Mengden (3-4) pitched six solid innings for Oakland. Eduardo Rodriguez (3-1) took his first loss of the season after getting roughed up in the first few innings.

                      METS 12, BLUE JAYS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Noah Syndergaard (3-1) won for the first time in five weeks, knocking in two early runs against the team that traded him to rouse a sluggish New York offense.

Missing injured sluggers Yoenis Cespedes and Todd Frazier from a slumping lineup, the Mets finally broke through anyway against Jaime Garcia (2-3) and the skidding Blue Jays after an 86-minute rain delay at the start.

Juan Lagares had four hits, three RBIs and a stolen base to help New York improve to 12-0 at home against Toronto - the longest such streak in interleague history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                      DIAMONDBACKS 2, BREWERS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Daniel Descalso singled home Jarrod Dyson with two outs in the eighth inning, and Arizona snapped a six-game losing streak.

The Diamondbacks managed just three hits against starter Jhoulys Chacin and three relievers, but starter Zack Greinke stifled Milwaukee over six innings and Arizona tied together just enough offense to get by.

Taylor Williams (0-1) walked Jeff Mathis to start the Arizona eighth, and Descalso singled through the shift to score pinch-runner Dyson. It gave Archie Bradley (1-1) a win after striking out two in a perfect eighth. Brad Boxberger tossed a scoreless ninth for his 12th save.

                      PIRATES 7, WHITE SOX 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Trevor Williams (5-2) scattered six hits in seven innings, and Adam Frazier homered to start a four-run first.

Chicago has lost eight of nine and 12 of 14, dropping to a major league-worst 10-28. The White Sox have matched the poorest 38-game start in team history, in 1948.

Reynaldo Lopez (0-3) gave up six runs and seven hits with two walks in two-plus innings.

                      YANKEES 3, NATIONALS 3, 5+ INNINGS, SUSPENDED

WASHINGTON (AP) - Tyler Austin hit a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly as the Yankees rallied from a 3-0 deficit in a game suspended because of rain with the score 3-3 after 5+ innings. The game is scheduled to continue at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday before the finale of the two-game interleague series.

Washington built a 3-0 lead against Masahiro Tanaka when Anthony Rendon homered in the first, and Andrew Stevenson hit a run-scoring single in the second and scored on Pedro Severino's double.

                      TIGERS 9, INDIANS 8

DETROIT (AP) - JaCoby Jones homered and doubled, and Detroit rallied in a five-run seventh as Andrew Miller (1-2) allowed two inherited runners to score and gave up two runs of his own. Pete Kozma hit a tying, two-run double, and Miller walked John Hicks with the bases loaded.

Cleveland led 4-0 on Brandon Guyer's first-inning grand slam and 8-4 before Detroit rallied for its third straight win. Miller faced six batters, giving up two doubles and three walks while getting one out.

Louis Coleman (1-0) threw a scoreless seventh and Shane Greene, pitching for the fourth straight day, worked the ninth for his ninth save.

                      CUBS 3, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Cubs catcher Willson Contreras helped Chicago throw out two runners at home plate and another at third base before rallying for two runs in the ninth inning.

After Ronald Acuna Jr. homered against Carl Edwards Jr. (2-0) for a 2-1 lead in the eighth, Albert Almora Jr. and Addison Russell hit consecutive doubles and Ben Zobrist came through with a two-out, run-scoring single off Arodys Vizcaino (1-2). Brandon Morrow got three outs for his 10th save.

                      TWINS 4, CARDINALS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Bobby Wilson hit his first home run since Sept. 21, 2016, for Tampa Bay, a two-run drive off Luke Gregerson that capped a three-run seventh.

Jose Berrios (4-4) surrendered one run on two hits and struck out 10, leaving after hitting Kolten Wong with a pitch with one out in the eighth.

Addison Reed struck out both batters he faced and Fernando Rodney retired three straight batters for his eighth save.

Brett Cecil (0-1) allowed a double to Logan Morrison starting the seventh, and Morrison scored on Byron Buxton's bunt attempt when Gregerson threw the ball wide of first and into foul territory for an error.

                      RAYS 6, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jonny Venters (1-0) got two outs for his first victory since Sept. 27, 2012, while with Atlanta against the Mets. Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                          13) I usually have a great time sitting in the sportsbook here at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas; usually find lot of interesting people to talk to. Comfortable chairs, big screens to watch the games on. Had great fun watching games Monday, but last night……..

I’m sitting there last night, and this guy sits in the chair next to me, on my right; within 90 seconds, he starts in by criticizing every team he has bet on. For the next two hours, I heard in loud and obscene terms:

                          — Washington Caps pass too much in the offensive zone.
                          — Mike Matheny doesn’t know how to make a lineup.
                          — Matt Carpenter shouldn’t bat 2nd.
                          — The Flaherty kid pitching for St Louis should be in AAA.
                          — Matt Chapman sucks as a third baseman.
                          — Matt Carpenter shouldn’t be playing.
                          — Daniel Mengden can’t field his position. And on and on………..

                          12) Now two of those guys play for the Oakland A’s, and if you know me, you know I’ve been an A’s fan since 1965, when Phil Roof was the A’s catcher and Jose Tartabull played the outfield. I love the freakin’ A’s. I’m biting my tongue so hard with this guy it hurts.

He bet the Cardinals and A’s in the first five innings; both bets win, but he doesn’t say one positive word about either team. He loses his NHL wager. I am considering whether he has Tourette’s syndrome or is just a degenerative gambler without any filter at all.

                          11) He blurts out “Winner, winner, chicken dinner” as the 5th inning ends in the A’s game, and goes to cash his ticket. I say to him “Mengden won the game for you” and he protests with a profanity (“He can’t field his (bleep)ing position”) as he storms off, never to be seen again.

Should’ve said something about an hour earlier…….

                          10) Robinson Cano gets an 80-game suspension for failing a drug test; weird timing, since he broke his hand Sunday, and the suspension/injury will be served at same time. Cano will be eligible again in late August, but if Seattle makes the playoffs, he is ineligible to play in them.

Cano loses roughly $11.85M with the suspension; Mariners can use that money to try and replace him, or fortify their team somewhere else. Seattle is 24-17 with roughly 25% off the season gone; they’re half-game out of the 2nd Wild Card spot.

                          9) David Tepper, a billionaire hedge-fund manager who owned a small part of the Steelers, will buy the Carolina Panthers for $2.2B or so and keep the team in Charlotte. Mr Tepper is said to be paying cash to buy the team. 2.2 billion dollars. In cash.

I can barely afford a team in my fantasy league. Good for him.

                          8) Supreme Court has opened the door for states other than Nevada to start taking bets on sports; New Jersey is already rumored to be starting on Memorial Day.

                          7) New York-Washington baseball game was suspended in the middle of the 6th inning last night, with game 3-3; it’ll be resumed at 5:05 ET today, and then the regularly-scheduled game will be played.

Orioles-Phillies got rained out last night; that game will be made up July 12.

                          6) Guy named Tom Haberstroh is a better man than I am; he counted how many times each team dribbled in the Rockets-Warriors game Monday. Houston 1,105, Warriors 812.

Point being that part of Golden State’s greatness is that they get great spacing and they find open men quickly with passes, the way basketball should be played. Plus the open men they find can all shoot, otherwise it would be pointless to get them the ball.

                          5) Phoenix Suns won the NBA Lottery, so they get the first pick in the draft; seeing as they already hired a foreign-born coach who was once coached international prospect Luka Doncic on a national team, you’d think he’ll be the choice, yes?

But Deandre Ayton played one season for the Arizona Wildcats; most people seem to think he is the best player in the draft. We’ll see what the Suns do.

Sacramento/Atlanta pulled upsets and moved up to the 2nd and 3rd spots in the draft.

                          4) Arizona Diamondbacks lost star CF AJ Pollock (broken wrist) for 4-6 weeks.

                          3) You can wager on what color hat the Queen of England will be wearing at the royal wedding this weekend. Green is the current favorite, bet down to even money.

                          2) So you bet the Astros-Angels game last night; maybe you bet the game because Fielden Culbreth was the home plate ump, but Culbreth got drilled in the mask by a foul ball in the 3rd inning and was replaced by CB Bucknor, who is more of a pitcher’s umpire.

Sometimes stuff happens during a game and it either helps you or hurts you from a gambling perspective; when you’re hot, things fall your way. When you’re cold, you lose replay challenges and guys drop fly balls on you. Part of what makes gambling so challenging.

                          1) I made a wager on the Dodgers-Marlins game last night, forgetting that they can’t show Dodger games here in Las Vegas unless they’re on national TV. Las Vegas for some stupid reason, is considered part of the LA market, so their games get blacked out.

Think I realized all this about 30 seconds before the talkative gambler sat next to me and brightened up my world. Today will be a better day!!!!
