            • Anderson comes off DL, helps surging A's blank Cleveland
              July 8, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) Brett Anderson came off the disabled list and pitched effectively into the sixth inning before turning things over to Oakland's outstanding bullpen as the Athletics downed the Cleveland Indians 6-0 on Sunday.

Anderson (1-2) had been sidelined with a shoulder strain, one of several injuries to the A's starting staff. But the left-hander looked sharp in his first start since May 18, limiting the Indians to three hits and leaving with a 4-0 lead.

Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run homer off rookie Shane Bieber (4-1), and Jed Lowrie had a solo shot as Oakland won for the 10th time in 12 games to take two of three from the Indians.

The A's are 18-6 against AL Central teams.

Yusmeiro Petit, Ryan Buchter and Emilio Pagan finished the combined five-hitter as the A's moved 10 games over .500.

              ASTROS 2, WHITE SOX 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel pitched seven strong innings, Jose Altuve homered and Houston manufactured the go-ahead run in the seventh to complete a four-game sweep of Chicago.

Altuve's solo shot put the Astros up 1-0 in the fourth.

Chicago starter Lucas Giolito (5-8) had retired nine straight after Altuve's home run when Yuli Gurriel got Houston's second hit of the game, a double with no outs in the seventh. He went to third on a flyout and the Astros went up 2-1 on a sacrifice bunt by Marwin Gonzalez.

Keuchel (6-8) yielded six hits and a run to win his third straight decision.

Hector Rondon struck out two in a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

              YANKEES 2, BLUE JAYS 1, 10 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Brett Gardner hit a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning and New York beat Toronto for its fourth win in five games.

Former Yankees reliever Tyler Clippard (4-3) hit New York's Greg Bird with a pitch to begin the 10th, and Tyler Wade came on to pinch run. Austin Romine sacrificed Wade to second, and Gardner followed with a single.

Chad Green (5-1) pitched one inning for the win and David Robertson finished for his second save. Regular closer Aroldis Chapman, who left Saturday's game because of a sore left knee, was available but did not pitch.

              PADRES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3, 16 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) - Wil Myers homered for San Diego for the fourth time in two days, connecting in the 16th inning off Arizona catcher Jeff Mathis.

Myers, who hit three home runs Saturday, clubbed a 3-2 pitch from Mathis (0-1) over the right-field fence with two outs.

The Diamondbacks used two starting pitchers out of necessity. Zack Greinke began the game and Zack Godley entered in extra innings.

Manuel Margot had a career-high five hits for the Padres. All-Star closer Brad Hand (2-4) worked two innings for the win in a game that lasted 5 hours, 31 minutes.

              RANGERS 3, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Austin Bibens-Dirkx pitched Texas past Detroit.

Jurickson Profar homered in the first inning and the Rangers split the four-game series. Bibens-Dirkx (2-2) allowed three hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five.

All-Star Shin-Soo Choo of the Rangers hit an infield single with two outs in the ninth, extending his on-base streak to 47 games. He surpassed the team record of 46, set by Julio Franco in 1993.

Jose Leclerc struck out five in 1 2/3 hitless innings of relief for Texas. Jake Diekman pitched the eighth, and Keone Kela finished for his 22nd save in 22 chances.

Michael Fulmer (3-8) allowed two earned runs and five hits in seven innings.

              RAYS 9, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Nathan Eovaldi took a perfect game into the seventh inning, C.J. Cron hit an early three-run homer and Tampa Bay routed New York.

Eovaldi retired his first 18 batters before Brandon Nimmo lined a clean single to right field leading off the seventh. Nimmo was quickly erased on a double play, and Eovaldi faced the minimum through seven innings.

The right-hander, who returned this season from his second Tommy John surgery, struck out nine. Andrew Kittredge pitched the final two innings for the Rays, giving up a single in the ninth before finishing the two-hitter.

Cron's home run gave the Rays a 3-0 lead in the first. He connected off Chris Flexen (0-2) for his 17th of the season, setting a career high.

              PIRATES 4, PHILLIES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nick Kingham pitched six solid innings and had two RBIs, helping Pittsburgh avoid a three-game sweep against Philadelphia.

In his eighth major league start, Kingham (3-4) allowed one run and four hits with five strikeouts and one walk for his first win since May 4. The right-hander retired the first 20 batters of his MLB debut against St. Louis on April 29 before giving up four runs in a 6-4 win in his second start.

Felipe Vazquez struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save.

Drew Anderson (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in his season debut for the Phillies.

              MARLINS 10, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - J.T. Realmuto had a career-high five hits and drove in three runs, Martin Prado got four hits and Miami snapped a 14-game losing streak to Washington.

The Marlins piled up a season-high 22 hits, the first 19 of which were singles, and salvaged the finale of a four-game series.

Adam Conley (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win.

Mark Reynolds, given a start at third base by the Nationals after his 10-RBI game Saturday night, went 2 for 4 with a walk. He also pitched one-third of an inning, retiring the only batter he faced in the ninth.

Tanner Roark (3-11) hasn't won since June 6. He allowed four runs, 10 hits, three walks and hit two batters over four innings.

              TWINS 10, ORIOLES 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jake Odorizzi pitched six scoreless innings and Mitch Garver, Eduardo Escobar and Brian Dozier homered as Minnesota completed a four-game sweep of Baltimore.

Odorizzi (4-6) turned in his third consecutive strong outing, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out five. In his last three starts, he's allowed only two earned runs over 17 innings.

Baltimore's Chris Davis homered off reliever Matt Magill with two outs in the ninth to break up the shutout.

Orioles starter Alex Cobb (2-11), Odorizzi's former teammate in Tampa Bay, kept the Twins at bay for the first four innings but still ended up taking the loss. That ties him with Kansas City's Jason Hammel for the most in the major leagues.

              RED SOX 7, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Rick Porcello pitched seven effective innings, Andrew Benintendi had four hits and Boston beat Kansas City.

The Red Sox hit .385 and had 68 baserunners in sweeping the three-game series. Boston has won six straight and 13 of 16.

Porcello (11-3) allowed three runs and nine hits before leaving after 111 pitches. He struck out nine, matching his season high, and walked one. Craig Kimbrel got two outs for his 27th save in 29 chances.

Heath Fillmyer (0-1), making his first big league start, allowed four runs, one unearned, on eight hits and three walks.

              BREWERS 10, BRAVES 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jesus Aguilar homered twice, Hernan Perez added a three-run shot and Milwaukee defeated Atlanta.

Aguilar hit a solo drive in the seventh and a three-run shot in the eighth. The burly slugger moved into a tie with Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the NL lead with 22 homers.

Milwaukee also got another solid start from Junior Guerra (6-5) during its sixth win in seven games. The right-hander allowed one run and seven hits in six innings, helped by three double plays.

Atlanta left-hander Sean Newcomb (8-4) was tagged for five runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

              CUBS 6, REDS 5, 10 INNINGS

CHICAGO - David Bote drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning, lifting Chicago over Cincinnati.

Javier Baez had two hits and two RBIs for the Cubs, who have earned their last nine wins in comeback fashion. Albert Almora Jr. and Ian Happ also had two hits apiece, and Addison Russell drove in three runs.

Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall homered for the Reds, who had won their previous five series.

Luke Farrell (3-3) worked a clean inning for the win. Jackson Stephens (2-2) took the loss.

              MARINERS 6, ROCKIES 4

SEATTLE - Ryon Healy homered and tied a career high with five RBIs, leading Seattle over Colorado.

Healy, who had a two-run double in the first inning, put the Mariners ahead for good with a three-run homer - his 18th of the season - in the sixth. He entered the game in an 0-for-13 slump.

Wade LeBlanc (5-0) won despite giving up four runs in six innings. The three homers allowed were his most this season.

Edwin Diaz struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth for his major league-leading 35th save.

Colorado starter Antonio Senzatela (3-2) allowed six runs and five hits in six innings.

              GIANTS 13, CARDINALS 8

SAN FRANCISCO - Pablo Sandoval homered and had five RBIs to back an uneven start by Madison Bumgarner as San Francisco beat St. Louis.

Andrew McCutchen and Alen Hanson each added three hits. Brandon Belt and Gorkys Hernandez had two apiece to help the Giants split the four-game series.

Bumgarner (2-3) earned his second win this season despite an erratic outing. Making his seventh start after missing the first two months with a broken left pinkie, Bumgarner allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

John Brebbia (1-3) also took the loss against the Giants on Friday.

                • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Spreads on random college football games this fall:

                  — Sept 8: Clemson (-12.5) @ Texas A&M

                  — Oct 13: Wisconsin @ Michigan (-3.5)

                  **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                  13) How the bleep is Blake Snell not on the AL All-Star team?!?!?!?!

Snell is a lefty pitcher; he is 12-4, 2.09 with a 1.03 WHIP. Hitters are batting .183 against him— he’s the best pitcher in the damn league, but HE ISN’T ON THE DAMN ALL-STAR TEAM!!!!

If Snell pitched for a team in NY or Boston, they’d be preparing his plaque for Cooperstown already (see Matt Harvey), but he’s on the Rays, so screw him.

                  12) Well guess what, Tampa Bay is 45-44, they can have more than one guy on the All-Star team. Wilson Ramos is the best hitting catcher in the AL, and Snell is the best pitcher. Not having him on the All-Star team is an embarrassment— he belongs on before any of the closers.

                  11) Mark Reynolds’ line in the boxscore Saturday night: 5-3-5-10

5 for 5, three runs scored, 10 runs knocked in. One game.

Reynolds was a free agent until April 17; anyone could’ve had him.

In his last 17 games, Jose Abreu is 10-57 wth 3 runs scored and 8 RBI; he made somehow made the freakin’ All-Star team.

                  10) Charlotte, Chicago and Orlando pulled off a 3-way trade in the NBA: Timofey Mozgov will be sent from Charlotte to Orlando in exchange for Bismack Biyombo. Charlotte will also be sending Julyan Stone to the Bulls while Chicago sends Jerian Grant to Orlando.

                  9) Arizona led the Padres 15-4 in the 5th inning Saturday, and the D’Backs take Robbie Ray out with a man on base and one out. Starting pitcher has to finish five innings to get the win; Ray threw 96 pitches in his second start back from injury- he couldn’t have been very happy.

                  8) David Price’s last 11 hitters in Kansas City Saturday night; six strikeouts, two hits allowed, three hit batters, all in the same inning. No Boston pitcher had ever hit three batters in the same inning before.

                  7) Padres’ TV guys were saying Saturday night how the new humidor at Chase Field in Phoenix has helped reduce scoring. Luckily, no Diamondback hitters are on my fantasy team.

                  6) White Sox TV guys were talking Friday night about how the hitting background at Minute Maid Park in Houston is one of the smallest in the major leagues, and how batters struggle picking up the flight of the ball, moreso from lefty pitchers.

The hitting background became smaller once Tal’s Hill in centerfield was removed, and they put more of a seating area out over the CF fence.

                  5) They had a food drive to combat hunger at the CFL game in Winnipeg this weekend, and Blue Bomber fans donated over 90,000 pounds of food. Good for them!!!

                  4) Baseball doings:
                  — Red Sox C Christian Vazquez broke his right little finger sliding Saturday, is on the DL.
                  — Giants traded OF Austin Jackson, reliever Cory Gearrin and a minor leaguer to Texas for a player to be named later or cash.
                  — Wil Myers hit three homers Saturday and San Diego still lost by 15 runs.

                  3) NBA stuff:
                  — There are 19 players in the Las Vegas Summer League who are 28+ years old.
                  — Zaza Pachulia signed a one-year, $2.4M contract with the Pistons.
                  — Brook Lopez agreed to a one-year, $3.4M deal with the Bucks.
                  — Dante Exum signed a 3-year, $33M extension with the Jazz.

                  2) I thought this was the age of baseball analytics?
                  — Baltimore has Tim Beckham (.306 career OB%) batting leadoff.
                  — San Diego has Manuel Margot (.303 career OB%) batting leadoff.
                  — Angels have Kole Calhoun (.321 career OB%, .221 this year) batting leadoff.
                  — Tampa Bay has Kevin Keirmaier (batting .147) hitting leadoff.

Would it be too much to ask to have one of your best on-base guys batting first?

This is where I mention that it bothers me that Joey Votto doesn’t bat leadoff for Cincinnati. At least Billy Hamilton doesn’t either; they settled on Scott Schebler, most of the time.

                  1) If Wendell Carter Jr becomes a really good NBA player and becomes really, really rich, will his mother keep bitching about Mike Krzyzewski recruiting other good players beside her son to play for his Duke team?

At some point, will she thank her son’s college coach for helping to prepare him for the NBA? If not, the least she could do is clam up and have some class.

                          National League Parity
In the American League, there are three teams with a run differential of +116 or greater, including the defending champion Houston Astros with a mark of +188. There are also three teams with a run differential of -125 or more. In the National League, there isn't as much of a stark difference between the top and bottom teams.

There is just one team, the Chicago Cubs, with a run differential in positive triple digits (+105). There is also just one team with a run differential in negative triple digits, the Miami Marlins (-118). While there are some poor teams to fade, it's much tougher to pick your spots in the NL than it is in the AL. Even the last-place Reds are 39-51 (.433) overall, but they have a reasonable run differential of minus-34 and they have been great kryptonite to the aforementioned Cubs. In fact, the Reds have the second-most runs scored in the NL Central, and they're tied for fifth in the NL in runs. The only team to fade on a regular basis might be the Marlins, although a 19-26 mark at home and 18-29 mark on the road isn't really all that bad. And they're 5-5 over their past 10 outings, so...look at the AL. Baltimore (.270), Kansas City (.281) and the Chicago White Sox (.333) all have winning percentages lower than any club in the NL.

                          Looking Ahead

                          Monday, July 9

The two MLB teams from the Buckeye State square off in Cleveland on Monday, as the Reds and Indians meet. Anthony DeSclafani and Mike Clevinger will be the combatants. The Reds have dominated the American League Central over their past eight tries, going 7-1. They're also a respectable 14-6 over the past 20 outings, while also managing a 7-1 record over the past eight interleague outings. However, they're 1-4 in DeSclafani's past five starts in the first game of a new series, and they're 0-4 in their past four DeSclafani starts against the AL Central. The Indians have posted a 4-1 mark across the past five against right-handed starting pitchers, and they're 6-2 in the past eight against the NL Central. Cleveland has won 47 of their past 66 home games, while they're 7-1 in Clevinger's past eight home starts against teams with a losing overall record. They're also 10-4 in his past 14 home starts overall. The Reds haven't fared very well when travelling up Interstate 71 to Cleveland, going 5-16 over the past 21 meetings at Progressive Field, and 2-8 in the past 10 meetings overall.

A have and a have-not square off at Camden Yards in Baltimore, as the Yankees and Orioles will do battle in a doubleheader. In Game 2 it's a pitching matchup featuring Luis Cessa and Yefry Ramirez, so on the surface this feels like an 'over' wager. The Yankees are 1-8 in the second game of a doubleheader, and 2-5 in their past seven road outings against a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also just 3-8 in Cessa's past 11 starts, and 1-5 in his past six on the road. Baltimore is an impressive 11-1 over their past 12 second games of a doubleheader, but just 2-11 in the past 13 at home vs. RHP. Getting back to that total talk...the 'over' is 6-1 in the past seven meetings in Charm City, and 24-4 in the past 28 meetings overall.

In late-night action, there are more divisional battles. The Dodgers visit the Padres, and they're 14-5 in the past 19 road outings. They're also 42-19 in the past 61 road starts by Clayton Kershaw, while going 16-5 in the past 21 games vs. RHP. The Padres are 5-15 in their past 20 overall, and 5-17 in their past 22 vs. LHP. They're also 1-6 in Luis Perdomo's past seven outings. L.A. is 5-0 in the past five road starts by Kershaw in San Diego, and 20-6 in the past 26 meetings overall when Kershaw is on the hill.

In Houston, the A's and Astros square off. The A's are 6-1 in the past seven road games, and 9-2 in their past 11 vs. RHP. Oakland is also 16-5 in the past 21 overall. While they're 5-2 in Frankie Montas' past seven starts, the Astros are even more impressive with Gerrit Cole. They're 15-2 in Cole's past 17 starts on grass, 5-0 in his past five at home and 6-0 in his past six vs. AL West foes.

                          Weather Report
The Phillies and Mets square off at Citi Field, and while there is no chance of precipitation, wind will be an issue. The wind will be blowing fiercely from 13-15 mph from home plate to the left-center field power alley. The same holds true for the Rangers-Red Sox battle in Boston, with the wind gusting from 12-15 mph straight at the Green Monster. Other than that, weather and wind will not be an issue across the MLB.

                          Tuesday, July 10
The Diamondbacks and Rockies will renew acquaintances on Tuesday at Coors Field. Arizona has ticked off wins in seven of their past eight road outings, while going 7-2 in the past nine road outings against teams with a losing home record. However, they're just 2-5 in the past seven against the NL West, and 6-20 in their past 26 against teams with a winning record. They're also just 1-4 in their past five with LHP Patrick Corbin on the hill against teams with a winning overall record, and 3-9 in his past 12 road outings against a team with a winning record. Colorado has won five of the past six overall, four of their past five vs. LHP and 6-1 in their past seven vs. NL West opponents. The Rox have also won seven of their past nine at Coors. Arizona has dominated this series of late, especially with Corbin on the bump. Arizona has won eight straght meetings at Coors Field, and 13 of the past 16 meetings overall. They're also 13-3 in the past 16 starts by Corbin against Colorado, including 5-2 in Corbin's past seven starts in Denver.

The Mariners and Angels will kick off a series on Tuesday in Anaheim. Seattle is on a tear, winning four in a row on the road and five of their past six against AL West opponents. And, for what it's worth, they're 9-2 in their past 11 appearances on Tuesday. More importantly, they're 6-0 in Mike Leake's past six road outings, and 9-2 in his past 11 outings overall. The Halos have won just once in the past five inside the division, but they're 9-4 in the past 13 at home while also going 9-4 in the past 13 at home vs. RHP. Seattle has won five of the past six meetings overall, and the 'over' is 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings overall. The 'over' is also 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings in SoCal.

                          Weather Report
In Queens, the wind will be blowing out from home plate to straightaway center field at 10-13 mph. In Cleveland, it will be the exact opposite, as winds will aid the pitchers. A wind of 12-15 mph will be blowing straight into the face of the batters from center field. There will be no precipitation threats again on Tuesday, but San Francisco is the winner for the biggest trouble spot. Well, it's trouble if you're a pitcher. The winds will be gusting from 16-20 mph from home plate to straightaway center field, making for a potentially long (or really short) night for the pitchers.

                            • LEADING OFF: Red Sox return home, Nola goes for 12th win
                              July 9, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                              BACK HOME IN BOSTON

The Red Sox went 7-2 on their recent road trip against the New York Yankees, Washington Nationals and Kansas City Royals. They return home for a seven-game homestand leading into the All-Star break, beginning with a series against the Texas Rangers. Eduardo Rodriguez (10-3, 3.84 ERA) starts the opener for Boston, and Mike Minor (6-4, 4.63) goes for Texas.

                              AN EVEN DOZEN

Philadelphia ace Aaron Nola tries to become the National League's first 12-game winner - and match his career high for victories - when he starts against the New York Mets. The right-hander was selected to his first All-Star Game on Sunday, and he enters the start in New York fifth in the NL in ERA (2.41) and sixth in strikeouts (116).

                              STRUGGLING STARTER

Kyle Hendricks has been one of the most consistent starters for the Chicago Cubs since entering the rotation in 2014. But the right-hander has been going through a difficult stretch over his last six outings, a trend he hopes to turn around when he pitches at San Francisco. Hendricks (5-8, 4.27 ERA) has allowed 22 runs over his last 29 1/3 innings since the start of June, wining only once during that span.
