      • Betts hurts side, says injury minor, Red Sox near East title
        September 16, 2018
        By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts left the game after hurting his left side making a throw to home plate during a 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Sunday that cut Boston's magic number to two for a third straight AL East title.

Boston can clinch the division at Yankee Stadium for the second time in three seasons, needing only one win during a three-game series that opens Tuesday afternoon.

Betts said the injury is minor and he will be in the lineup Tuesday. He is hitting .337 with 29 homers and 72 RBIs.

Andrew Benintendi hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning off Seth Lugo (3-4) after a matchup of Boston's Chris Sale and New York's Jacob deGrom, both Cy Young Award candidates. Brandon Workman (5-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Steven Wright got three outs for his first big league save.

        BLUE JAYS 3, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Dellin Betances wasted a 2-1 eighth-inning lead, allowing hits to four of his first five batters. Pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez had a tying single and Randal Grichuk a go-ahead double. Betances (4-6) has lost in two of his past three appearances.

The Yankees maintained a 1+-game lead over Oakland for the top AL wild card. Manager Aaron Boone said All-Star slugger Aaron Judge could return to the lineup against Boston.

Andrew McCutchen hit his fourth homer with the Yankees on the second pitch from Thomas Pannone (3-1). Toronto closer Ken Giles struck out Gary Sanchez with a runner on to end his second save in two days.

        ASTROS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander (16-9) struck out 11 in seven innings, allowing one run and three hits for Houston, which leads second-place Oakland by 4+ games in the AL West.

Arizona began the day four games behind in the NL West and 3+ games back for the second NL wild-card spot.

Zack Greinke (14-10) allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Tyler White hit a two-out, RBI double in the sixth for a 2-1 lead, Josh Reddick homered leading off the seventh, Jose Altuve had an RBI single later in the inning and Martin Maldonado added a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Eduardo Escobar had a sacrifice fly in the ninth and Daniel Descalso hit a two-run homer off Roberto Osuna, who struck out Ketel Marte for his 18th save.

        RAYS 5, ATHLETICS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Khris Davis hit a grand slam in the ninth off Sergio Romo, his major league-leading 43rd homer.

Tampa Bay trails Oakland by seven games with 14 games left.

C.J. Cron and Willy Adames homered off Mike Fiers (12-7). Andrew Kittredge (3-2) and seven relievers combined on a four-hitter, and Romo got two outs for his 21st save.

        NATIONALS 6, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon hit two-run homers off Sean Newcomb (12-9) and 19-year-old rookie Juan Soto added an RBI single.

Atlanta maintained a 6+-game lead in the NL East over second-place Philadelphia.

Tanner Roark (9-15) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings, and Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save.

        MARLINS 6, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Peter O'Brien homered and drove in three runs as Miami ended a five-game losing streak. O'Brien put the Marlins ahead with a two-run homer in the fourth and Bryan Holaday added a pair of doubles.

Nick Pivetta (7-13), who has won only one of his last 11 starts, struck out seven in the first three innings.

Jose Urena (7-12) allowed one run and three hits through a five-inning stint for his third straight win. He left early because of cramping in his pitching hand.

        REDS 2, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - The Cubs' NL Central lead remained at 2+ games over second-place Milwaukee when Scott Schebler homered on the first pitch of the game from Jose Quintana (13-10) and Phillip Ervin also went deep.

Joey Votto had three hits for last-place Cincinnati.

Luis Castillo (10-12) allowed one run, four hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings, giving up Albert Almora Jr.'s sacrifice fly in the fifth. Amir Garrett and Jared Hughes combined for four outs and Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his 27th save, completing a five-hitter.

        PIRATES 3, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jesus Aguilar and Domingo Santana homered on consecutive pitches from Felipe Vazquez to begin the ninth, but Milwaukee fell short. The Brewers lead the NL wild-card race by 2+ games.

Trevor Williams (13-9) allowed two hits in six scoreless innings. Vazquez got his 24th consecutive save and 34th overall this season when Ryan Braun struck out, Mike Moustakas popped out weakly and Erik Kratz grounded out.

Jhoulys Chacin (14-8) gave up two runs and three hits in five innings.

        ROCKIES 3, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Antonio Senzatela pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and also hit a two-run single as Colorado held its playoff position.

The Rockies, blanked the previous two days, avoided a three-game sweep. Colorado began the day with a half-game lead over St. Louis for the second NL wild-card spot and a half-game behind Los Angeles in the NL West - the Dodgers played later at St. Louis.

Senzatela (5-6) left in the sixth and Wade Davis got his NL-leading 40th save. The Rockies scored three times in the second against Dereck Rodriguez (6-4).

        PADRES 7, RANGERS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Francisco Mejia hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning and San Diego avoided three-game sweep in a matchup of last-place teams.

It was the first walkoff for Mejia, who was promoted from Triple-A on Sept. 4. The prized prospect has hit three homers since then.

The Rangers were two outs away from a 3-2 win before Freddy Galvis hit a tying double off rookie reliever Jeffrey Springs (0-1). Mejia homered off Springs.

Kirby Yates (5-3) got two outs for the win.

        ANGELS 4, MARINERS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Kole Calhoun hit a tiebreaking home run and Justin Upton connected in his third straight game as Los Angeles averted a four-game sweep.

Angels star Shohei Ohtani appeared to be limping as he jogged off the field in the eighth inning after he slid awkwardly into second base and was caught stealing.

Calhoun's solo homer in the seventh off reliever Nick Vincent (3-4) snapped his 0-for-25 skid.

Taylor Cole (2-2) got the win and Ty Buttrey struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.

        TIGERS 6, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Indians rested several regulars a day after clinching the AL Central. Jim Adduci homered and drove in a career-high four runs for Detroit

Francisco Liriano (5-10) allowed three runs in seven innings for the Tigers, who won two of three in the series after losing 10 straight at Progressive Field dating to last season.

Cleveland rookie Shane Bieber (10-4) wasted a 3-1 lead in the fifth.

Indians reliever Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless seventh but gave up a solo home run to Mikie Mahtook in the eighth. Miller has been on the disabled list three times this season with hamstring, knee and shoulder injuries.

        ORIOLES 8, WHITE SOX 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jonathan Villar and Adam Jones homered and rookie Cedric Mullins had a career-high four hits.

Baltimore took control with a five-run first inning against Lucas Giolito (10-11) and held on for its 43rd victory. That means the Orioles can't match the major league record of 120 losses in a season, set by the 1962 New York Mets.

Ryan Meisinger (1-0) got the final two outs in the fifth for his first major league victory, and Paul Fry finished for his initial big league save.

        TWINS 9, ROYALS 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Tyler Austin hit one of Minnesota's four home runs and made a spectacular catch while flipping into the dugout down the first-base line as Minnesota avoided a four-game sweep.

Max Kepler, Johnny Field and Jorge Polanco also went deep for the Twins, who had a season-high 18 hits.

Kyle Gibson (8-13) lasted into the seventh and ended a four-start losing streak despite giving up five runs and 11 hits.

Jerry Vasto (0-1) allowed one run on three hits to take the loss in relief.

Wainwright blanks Dodgers over 6 innings, Cardinals win 5-0
        September 16, 2018

ST. LOUIS (AP) Adam Wainwright pitched two-hit ball over six innings for his first win in five months, Marcell Ozuna homered and the St. Louis Cardinals salvaged the finale of a four-game series with a 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night.

The Cardinals snapped a season-high four-game losing streak and moved into a tie for the second National League wild card with the Dodgers, who slipped a half-game behind Colorado for the NL West lead.

The Rockies visit Dodger Stadium for a three-game series beginning Monday night, the last regular-season meeting between the teams.

Wainwright (2-3), making his second start since missing almost four months with right elbow inflammation, struck out a season-high nine while earning his first victory since April 16. His 101 pitches were his most since July 22, 2017.

Cardinals reliever Bud Norris left the game with a blister on his middle finger after walking the only batter he faced in the seventh. Jordan Hicks, pitching for the first time in a week, finished the inning and also worked the eighth. Carlos Martinez completed the four-hit shutout - one night after the Dodgers piled up 17 runs.

Ozuna homered to right-center to make it 1-0 in the second.

Yairo Munoz sparked a two-run fourth, reaching first on a wild pitch after swinging and missing at strike three. Jedd Gyorko and Yadier Molina followed with RBI singles, chasing Dodgers starter Ross Stripling and giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.

Ozuna singled and scored on third baseman Justin Turner's fielding error in the sixth. Ozuna has a team-high 44 multihit games.

Molina had a pair of singles and drove in another run in the eighth.

Stripling (8-4) retired nine of his first 10 batters before running into trouble in the fourth. He went 3 1/3 innings, matching his shortest start of the season last Wednesday at Cincinnati.

        TRAINER'S ROOM

Dodgers: LHP Tony Cingrani (left shoulder strain) and RHP John Axford (broken right leg) will be activated Monday.

Cardinals: Norris was removed after throwing just seven pitches.

        UP NEXT

Dodgers: LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-3, 2.42 ERA) starts Monday against Colorado RHP Jon Gray (11-7, 4.80). Ryu is 3-6 with a 5.77 ERA in nine career starts vs. the Rockies.

Cardinals: RHP Miles Mikolas (15-4, 2.99 ERA) gets the opener of a three-game series in Atlanta against Braves RHP Mike Foltynewicz (11-9, 2.66 ERA) on Monday night. In his last outing, Mikolas became the first pitcher to win 15 games in his first season with St. Louis since Mark Mulder in 2005.

LEADING OFF: NL West showdown, Cards-Braves, Cubs slumping
          September 16, 2018
          By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

          SHOWDOWN

With the Rockies and Dodgers in a tight race atop the NL West, they begin their final series of the regular season. Jon Gray (11-7) pitches the opener of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium against Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-3). Gray is 4-0 in 11 starts since returning from the minors. After getting shut out on consecutive days, the Rockies ended their longest scoring drought of the year during a 3-2 win Sunday in San Francisco. Colorado is 41-34 on the road this season, and one more victory will break the franchise record for wins away from Coors Field.

          HUNT FOR OCTOBER

It's a potential playoff preview and a matchup of All-Star pitchers when Miles Mikolas (15-4) and the Cardinals visit first-place Atlanta. Mike Foltynewicz (11-9) starts for the Braves, who lead second-place Philadelphia by 6+ games in the NL East. Atlanta's magic number is eight to win its first NL East title in five years. But the Braves have been struggling at home, where they have lost eight of 11 and are 38-36 overall. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said third baseman Johan Camargo should be back in the lineup after missing four games with left groin tightness.

          SILENT STICKS

Leading the NL Central by 2+ games over Milwaukee, the Cubs hope to get their slumping bats going when they face left-hander Patrick Corbin (11-5, 3.05 ERA) in Arizona. Chasing its third consecutive division championship, Chicago scored only five runs in a three-game home series against last-place Cincinnati over the weekend. The Cubs have totaled 15 runs in their past seven games. ''We have to do better than one run somehow,'' manager Joe Maddon said. Left fielder Kyle Schwarber (back) has missed six games in a row and didn't accompany the team to Arizona.

          REST UP

Mookie Betts and the major league-leading Red Sox get a day off before their first chance to clinch a third straight AL East crown. Boston can wrap up the division title at Yankee Stadium for the second time in three seasons, needing only one win during a three-game series that opens Tuesday afternoon. Betts, a contender for AL MVP, left Sunday's win over the Mets after hurting his left side making a throw to home plate. He said the injury is minor and he'll be in the lineup Tuesday. The Yankees hold a 1+-game lead over Oakland for the top AL wild card. New York manager Aaron Boone said star slugger Aaron Judge could return to the lineup against Boston.

            Season record: 5-6-1

            **********

Armadillo: Monday's Den: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Chiefs 42, Steelers 37— Don’t think I’ve ever seen this before; Patrick Mahomes threw six TD passes in a game where his offense faced only five 3rd down plays the whole day. More TD passes than 3rd down plays? Doesn’t happen much.

Chiefs led 21-0, it was 21-21 at the half; Pittsburgh scored 58 points in its first two games, but they didn’t win either one of them. And Le’Veon Bell has coughed away $1,760,000 in just two weeks, because…….well, I don’t know why. Guess he doesn’t want to play.

Saints 21, Browns 18— Cleveland outgained Saints by 52 yards, but Browns’ kicker missed two FG’s, two PAT’s, including one with 1:16 left that would’ve given the Browns a 19-18 lead. Don’t scrimp when it comes to paying kickers; they decide who wins close games. Gregg Williams’ defense held Saints to 5.6 yards/play, but it wasn’t good enough.

Vikings 29, Packers 29 OT— Two weeks, two ties; not sure I can remember a kicker missing two FG’s in same OT period, but Vikings’ rookie Carlson was 0-3 in this game, 0-2 in OT. Why do contending teams have rookie kickers?!?!?!?!

Green Bay scored only one offensive TD, tried six FG’s; they scored a TD on a blocked punt on Minnesota’s first series. Total yardage here was 480-351 Vikings, but they didn’t win.

Titans 20, Texans 17— A gentleman in Las Vegas wagered $100,000 on the Texans in this game; imagine having the onions to bet $100K on a team coached by Bill O’Brien?? Total yardage was 437-283 Houston, but Titans got the home win.

Tennessee led 14-0 early behind backup QB Gabbert and a TD pass off a fake punt, but Houston rallied to lead 17-14 early in 4th quarter, before Titans kicked FG’s on their last two drives to win the game.

Falcons 31, Panthers 24— Falcons have now won five of last six series games, with all five wins by 7+ points; Carolina lost its last four visits here. Atlanta is 13-2 vs spread in its last 15 home openers. Total yardage was 442-439, Atlanta averaged 9.7 yards/pass attempt. Cam Newton took a vicious shot to the head as he slid after a run; the tackler was ejected.

Rams 34, Cardinals 0— Arizona needs to play rookie QB Rosen now, because Sam Bradford isn’t competing; he dumps the ball off quick as hell so he won’t get hit. If Rosen isn’t ready, then play Mike Glennon, because the defense got depressed in this game. They know they have no shot.

Cardinals had five first downs, 137 total yards, and lost field position by 20 yards, in a game where Rams’ kicker Greg Zeurlein strained a groin muscle before the game. Punter Johnny Hekker kicker a FG and a PAT- Rams went for two the other times they scored.

Chargers 31, Bills 20— Buffalo trailed 26-0/28-6 at halftime of its two games, but at least now rookie QB Allen is getting needed experience that hopefully will pay off down the road (can you hear us, Arizona?). Chargers scored 59 points in splitting their first two games; they visit the Rams in the LA Coliseum next week.

Bills’ CB Vontae Davis abruptly retired at halftime of this game, saying in a statement that the reality had hit him: “I shouldn’t be out there anymore.”

Dolphins 20, Jets 12— First-place 2-0 Miami ran out to a 20-0 lead, won field position by 10 yards- two of their three TD drives were less than 50 yards- they held Jets to 42 rushing yards. Dolphins covered four of their last five road openers; under is 20-5 in their last 25 road openers.

NFL Network has Jets-Browns on this Thursday night; huge game for both teams. Winner will either be 2-1 or 1-1-1 after three weeks, a big improvement.

Buccaneers 27, Eagles 21— Ryan Fitzpatrick is 48-61 for 819 yards in two wins; Jameis Winston ain’t getting his job back after his suspension ends next week, at least not right away. Bucs had two drives of one play, 75 yards each- they averaged 11.2 yards/pass attempt.

49ers 30, Lions 27— Underdogs were 10-4 against spread Sunday, including this back-door cover by Detroit, which scored two TD’s in last 8:40 to beat the number.

Matthew Stafford threw 53 passes, Lions ran ball only 18 times; he may make $9M a year more than Tom Brady, but Stafford’s career record is 60-67, his playoff record is 0-3. Matt Patricia is learning the hard way that winning without Brady ain’t so easy.

Guess who the Lions play next week? Brady and the Patriots, on Sunday night.

Jaguars 31, Patriots 20— Jax’ville avenged their loss in LY’s AFC title game; they converted 10-14 on third down, held Gronkowski to two catches for 15 yards and overcame a -2 turnover ratio. Yardage was 481-302 Jaguars; people have to stop riding Blake Bortles, he’s winning lot of games lately.

Broncos 20, Raiders 19— Oakland led 12-0 at halftime, 19-7 with 3:00 left in third quarter, but Denver scored on all four second half possessions (two TD’s, two FG”s), kicking winning FG with 0:06 left, giving them two home wins, by total of four points. Raiders converted only 3 of 10 third down plays and fell to 0-2.

            Colts 21, Redskins 9— Indy converted 9 of 16 on 3rd down, scored 21 points on three red zone drives. Redskins kicked FG’s on both their red zone drives, ran ball for only 65 yards- they were 5-15 on third down. Colts are 9-4 in their last 13 games vs NFC teams. Redskins have now lost six of their last seven home openers;

Cowboys 20, Giants 13— Dallas held rookie RB Barkley to 28 rushing yards, sacked immobile QB Manning six times, and won a game that took well under 3:00 to play, shortest NFL game I can remember in long time. Barkley did catch 14 passes for 80 yards; Beckham was held to four catches, 51 yards.

Colorado Under 5-1 past six games
                      L.A. Dodgers Under 11-6-1 past 18 games
N.Y. Mets Under 4-0-1 past five games
Pittsburgh Under 12-4-1 past 17 games
San Francisco Under 17-2-1 past 20 games

                      Giant Fade

The San Francisco Giants have been a great parlay fade lately, betting against their futility while taking the 'under'. Over the past 14 games, the Giants have won just twice while the 'under' is 12-2 during the stretch, too. The Giants have lost AND the 'under' on 10 separate occasions during the 14-game streak.

That streak will be put to the test, as the Giants take it on the road to face the last-place San Diego Padres. LHP Andrew Suarez will take the ball for San Francisco, while RHP Bryan Mitchell works for the Fathers. The Giants have won just twice over their past 14 games on the road, and they're a dismal 1-8 across the past nine outings vs. RHP. The Giants haven't had a lot of luck inside the division, either, going just 2-5 in their past seven against NL West foes. The only good thing going for the Giants lately has been Suarez, and San Francicso has won four of the past five when the lefty kicks off a new series. The 'under' is 25-7-2 in the past 34 for the Giants against NL West clubs, too, while going 3-0-1 in Suarez's past four outings. The under is also 6-1-1 in his past eight assignments against divisional opponents.

For the Padres, they're just 16-35 across the past 51 against left-handed starting pitchers, while winning just 16 times over their past 53 divisional games. They haven't had a lot of luck at Petco vs. lefties, too, winning just once in their past eight at home against southpaws. While they're also a dismal 1-4 in Mitchell's past five starts at home, they have won four of his past five outings overall, so that might be the way to go against Suarez and the skidding Giants.

The 'under has cashed in five of the past six inside the division for the Padres, while going 6-0 in their past six games to kick off a new series. However, the 'over' is 6-2 in their past eight games, 20-6-1 in the past 27 at home vs. LHP and 4-1 in Mitchell's past five outings in San Diego.

                      Looking Ahead

                      Monday, Sept. 17

The Rockies and Dodgers square off in an important National League West Division battle at Chavez Ravine on Monday night. RHP Jon Gray will take the ball for the Rox, while the Dodgers counter with LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu. Gray is 0-0 with a .308 opponent batting average across just 9 2/3 innings over two starts against the Dodgers this season. However, he has really picked up the pace since the All-Star break, going 3-0 with a 3.77 ERA across 10 starts with 49 strikeouts over 62 innings and a .215 opponent batting average during the span.

For L.A., Ryu has been a tale of two pitchers. On the road, he is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in five road assignments, but at home he is 3-2 with a minuscule 1.51 ERA with 47 strikeouts and just six walks over 41 2/3 innings with a .223 opponent batting average. This will be his first meeting against Colorado this season, and that might be a good thing based on his history. Ryu is a terrible 0-4 with an 8.64 ERA across four starts against the Rockies since the start of the 2015 season. It's his highest ERA against any team in the league during the span.

Mariners LHP Wade LeBlanc takes the ball on Monday at Minute Maid Park against the Astros. He has cooled off lately, and the Astros might cool him off more. He is 1-1 with an 8.31 ERA across three starts and two relief appearnaces over 17 1/3 innings with a .347 opponent batting average against Houston this season.

Phillies RHP Jake Arrieta will work against the Mets on Monday at 'The Vault'. He is 0-1 in two outings against the Mets, but he has a 0.68 ERA over 13 1/2 innings with 11 strikeouts and a .188 opponent batting average against New York. Mets RHP Zack Wheeler has faced the Phillies just once this season, allowing three earned runs and seven hits over just 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision back on July 9.

                      Weather Report

There is a 40 percent chance of rain for the Blue Jays-Orioles battle at Camden Yards, so beware. The Royals and Pirates will be dodging plenty of rain drops in the Steel City, and there is a 60 percent chance of precipitation forecast for first pitch thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Florence moving up through the Keystone state.

They needn't worry about rain in Philadelphia, but the Mets and Phillies will face a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing from right to left field. Four other games will be played under a dome, so the weather concerns during the early part of the week are going to be confined to the east.

                      Tuesday, Sept. 18

Yankees RHP JA Happ will work against the Red Sox, and he looks to stay red hot. Since the All-Star break he is 6-0 with a 2.61 ERA over nine outings spanning 51 2/3 innings while striking out 52 batters with a .219 opponent batting average. He is 0-1 with a 0.84 ERA in two outings against the Red Sox this season with a sparkling .214 average and 16 punch outs over just 10 2/3 innings. Boston counters with RHP Nathan Eovaldi, but it might not end well for the BoSox starter. He is 2-6 with a 5.68 ERA across 57 innings over 12 road starts this season, and the opponent is hitting .288 against him.

Cardinals LHP Austin Gomber takes the ball for Tuesday's outing in Atlanta. The former Florida Atlantic University star has posted a 5-1 record with a 3.78 ERA in nine starts and two relief appearances since the All-Star break. The Braves counter with RHP Anibal Sanchez. While he has a 3.01 ERA and 1.12 WHIP overall on the season, and the opponent is hitting just .217 against him, he is actually just 1-3 across 55 innings in nine home starts and one relief appearance. This will actually be his first appearance against the Cardinals since July 8, 2012.

                        • Yelich propels Brewers with 2nd cycle in 3 weeks vs Reds
                          September 18, 2018
                          By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) Christian Yelich became the first major leaguer to hit for the cycle twice in one season against the same team, driving in four runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Cincinnati Reds 8-0 on Monday night.

Less than three weeks after his cycle in Cincinnati, the streaking slugger accomplished the feat against the last-place Reds once again to help the Brewers in their playoff pursuit. Milwaukee began the night 2+ games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central but with a three-game lead in the wild-card race.

Yelich singled in the first inning, doubled in the second, launched a two-run homer in the fifth and completed the cycle with a two-run triple in the sixth. With the Brewers nursing a large lead, he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Yelich's huge second half has turned him into a top contender for the NL MVP award. He also hit for the cycle when he went 6 for 6 in a 13-12 comeback victory on Aug. 29 at Cincinnati, making him the fifth player to turn the trick twice in one season - and first in Brewers history.

The previous player with two cycles in one season was Aaron Hill in 2012.

Wade Miley (5-2) labored through five innings and Brandon Woodruff got his first save.

Anthony DeSclafani (7-6) gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings.

                          CARDINALS 11, BRAVES 6

ATLANTA (AP) - Kolten Wong hit the first of four St. Louis homers, Miles Mikolas won his third straight start and the Cardinals beat the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves to give their playoff push another boost.

St. Louis has 35 victories since the All-Star break, most in the National League, and has won two straight after losing four in a row. The Cardinals, who also got homers from Paul DeJong, Harrison Bader and Yadier Molina, began the night tied with the Dodgers for the second NL wild card.

The Braves took a third consecutive loss after winning a season-best six straight games. They remained 6+ games ahead in the division following Philadelphia's loss to the Mets, which reduced Atlanta's magic number to seven as the Braves try to clinch their first NL East title in five years.

Mike Foltynewicz (11-10) allowed six runs and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. Atlanta pitchers have issued 32 walks over the last four games, all at home, where they are 38-37 and have dropped nine of 12.

Mikolas (16-4) gave up two runs in five innings. He improved to 16-0 when getting at least two runs of support, and the Cardinals are 21-3 in those games.

Freddie Freeman homered for the Braves.

                          MARINERS 4, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Rookie pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach's first career grand slam with two outs in the eighth inning lifted Seattle over Houston.

The loss trimmed Houston's lead in the AL West to four games over idle Oakland.

The Mariners trailed 1-0 when Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager singled off Hector Rondon (2-5) in the eighth. Rondon walked pinch-hitter Denard Span to load bases before Vogelbach sent a 97 mph fastball into the bullpen in right-center.

Marwin Gonzalez had an RBI double for the Astros in the fourth. But they mustered just three hits, with the last one coming in the fifth.

Ryan Cook (2-1) worked a perfect seventh, and Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 56th save.

                          BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore lost its 107th game, tied for most in a season since its arrival in 1954.

Toronto rookie Ryan Borucki (4-4) pitched eight innings of three-hit ball. The Blue Jays have won 13 of 17 games between the two bottom teams in the AL East.

Toronto stands 25 games better than the Orioles, whose 43-107 record is worst in the majors. The only other Orioles team with 107 defeats was the 1988 club, which started 0-21 on its way to a 54-107 finish.

The franchise record for losses is 111, by the 1939 St. Louis Browns. After going 54-100 in 1953, the Browns moved to Baltimore. The major league record is 120 losses, set by the expansion New York Mets in 1962.

Making his first major league start, Evan Phillips (0-1) retired the first five batters he faced before Kevin Pillar doubled, Rowdy Tellez hit an RBI single and Danny Jansen homered to left.

                          METS 9, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Conforto had a career-high six RBIs and finished a triple shy of the cycle, and Zack Wheeler pitched seven solid innings for his career-best 12th win for New York.

Conforto had a two-run single in the fifth, an RBI double in the seventh off Tommy Hunter (4-3) and a three-run homer in the ninth for the Mets, who have won 7 of 11 and are 26-17 over their last 43 games. Conforto has 75 RBIs, including 45 since the All-Star break, second most in the NL over that span behind Milwaukee's Christian Yelich.

Wheeler (12-7) allowed four runs and three hits to become the first Mets pitcher since Steve Trachsel in 2001 to record nine wins after the All-Star break. Since the break, the right-hander is 9-1 with a 1.68 ERA in 11 starts.

                          MARLINS 8, NATIONALS 5

MIAMI (AP) - Washington reliever Wander Suero balked in a run while the Nationals blew a four-run lead.

Washington led 4-0 after 4 1/2 innings but trailed by the end of the sixth. Suero let in the go-ahead run, balking with pinch-hitter Rafael Ortega batting and Austin Dean at third base to put Miami ahead 5-4.

Washington tied it in the seventh when Trea Turner beat out a potential double play, but Miami loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and Lewis Brinson hit a tiebreaking single off Koda Glover (1-3).

Jarlin Garcia (3-2) recorded the final out of the seventh. Adam Conley pitched the ninth for his third save.

                          RAYS 3, RANGERS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Tyler Glasnow allowed two infield singles in six innings for his first win since Tampa Bay traded Chris Archer to get the right-hander.

Ji-Man Choi homered and drove in two runs to help the Rays improve to a major league-best 21-5 since Aug. 19. Tampa Bay started the day seven games behind Oakland for the second American League wild card.

Adam Kolarek, Jose Alvarado and Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless inning apiece to wrap up the second two-hit shutout of the Rangers in a week. Romo got his 22nd save in 29 chances.

Glasnow (2-6) got his fourth career win in 26 starts over two seasons. He struck out six, walked two and hit a batter.

Adrian Sampson (0-2) gave up two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                          TWINS 6, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Kohl Stewart pitched six solid innings and Eddie Rosario homered for Minnesota before leaving with an injury in a victory over Detroit.

Gabriel Moya pitched the opening inning for the Twins before Stewart (2-1) took over and worked through the seventh. He allowed an unearned run and three hits with five strikeouts.

Rosario hit a solo shot in the first, his 24th home run of the year. He left in the fourth after aggravating a right quad injury on the play that gave the Tigers their only run of the game.

Jorge Polanco added a solo homer of his own in the ninth.

Jordan Zimmermann (7-8) allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings. Nicholas Castellanos had three hits and a walk for Detroit.

                          PIRATES 7, ROYALS 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates rookie Jacob Stallings hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally Pittsburgh past Kansas City.

After Jordan Luplow grounded into a double play, Kevin Kramer walked and moved to second on Kevin Newman's single. Stallings then singled off Ben Lively (0-3), scoring Kramer.

The Pirates scored twice with two outs in the eighth to tie it 6-all, including Starling Marte's RBI triple.

Newman had three hits as the Pirates won for the ninth time in 12 games.

                          Edgar Santana (3-3) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Ryan O'Hearn hit his 11th home run in 36 games for the Royals since making his debut July 31. He also had an RBI double.

                            Tuesday’s six-pack

Six interesting college games this weekend:

                            — Washington State @ USC (-4)- Friday night

                            — Stanford (-1.5) @ Oregon

                            — Florida (-4.5) @ Tennessee

                            — Texas Tech @ Oklahoma State (-13)— Listed total is 79.

                            — TCU (-3) @ Texas

                            — Wisconsin (-3.5) @ Iowa

                            Quote of the Day
“Look, coach (Chip) Kelly, if you wish to call him this is 4 and 26 for his last offensively called football games… Dorian has only played in 3 of the last 30 games… Can you say duped!”
Michael Robinson, whose son is UCLA’s QB.

                            Tuesday’s quiz
Who was the Chicago Bears’ coach last time they were in the Super Bowl?

                            Monday’s quiz
Giant coach Pat Shurmur’s son is the starting QB at Vanderbilt this year.

                            Sunday’s quiz

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                            13) Cleveland Browns were going to cut WR Josh Gordon over the weekend, but they traded him instead, to New England; they got a 5th-round draft pick in exchange.

                            12) It is too bad HBO’s Hard Knocks ends when the final rosters are named in training camp; seeing all that drama play out behind closed doors would’ve been good TV.

                            11) I know Nebraska is 0-2 for the first time since 1957 and they lost to Troy State Saturday, but ragging on Troy is a mistake- Trojans also won at LSU last year- they’re 24-6 in their last 30 games, and are favored to win the Sun Belt this season.

                            10) USC didn’t score a touchdown at Stanford two weeks ago; they didn’t score a point on their last nine drives at Texas- those two losses should have some Trojan coaches nervous, and since the head coach is signed up thru 2023, I’m talking about assistants on offensive side of the ball.

                            9) Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys for $154M in 1989; they’re worth right around $5B now. Not the best GM of a football team, but a damn good businessman.

                            8) Last two years, San Francisco Giants are 2-17 at Coors Field in Denver.

                            7) Defensive tackle David Onyemata of the Saints got fined $40,108 for two hits in the Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay. Problem is, Onyemata’s game check was $39,375- he lost $700 by playing in the game.

                            6) Florida State is 1-2 this season, and has looked awful in all three games.

In coach Willie Taggart’s previous head coaching stops, he went 11-25 in his first season at those schools; this is his third stop in three years, which is weird for a head coach, and his system is a lot different than Jimbo Fisher’s. If panic set in and FSU wanted to fire Taggart, it would cost the school around $21M, so that probably ain’t happening. At least this season.

                            5) Former NBA player Brent Barry got a job in San Antonio Spurs’ front office, which takes him off TV and that is a loss for those of us who watch NBA games on TV- he was a good analyst.

                            4) Mets won their season series with the Phillies the last seven years, their longest streak of that kind over any opponent, ever.

                            3) Seattle Seahawks have played 33 Monday Night Football games; last night was only their 10th such game on the road.

                            2) Eagles get starting QB Carson Wentz back this weekend, for first time since he got hurt out in LA last December. Philly split its first two games this season.

                            1) One of the best lines I’ve heard in Hard Knocks over the years was from Texans’ coach Bill O’Brien, who called the NFL “…..the most competitive business in the world” while talking to his team after the final roster had been determined.

Pretty accurate statement; there is such a fine line between success and failure.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
