  • LEADING OFF: Rangers-Twins get testy, Reds on grand run
    June 23, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

    CAREFUL

Texas has won seven in a row, and things got a little testy Saturday during a 9-6 victory at Target Field. Jurickson Profar tied a Rangers record when he was hit by pitches three times. Profar stole second base in the fourth inning with a 9-2 lead - his next at-bat, Minnesota reliever Addison Reed threw three inside fastballs, finally hitting him in the leg.

Said Texas manager Jeff Banister: ''I thought the intent there was excessive, especially they tried to dial him up three different times.''

Said Twins manager Paul Molitor: ''The thought process between the unwritten rules of the game is not clearly defined. What I might think and what he might think might be different things. I was surprised that (Profar) ran with the score the way it was, when he did. And getting hit there was something that Banister felt wasn't appropriate.''

    A GRAND TIME

The last-place Reds have won six straight, boosted by a bunch of grand slams. Cincinnati has hit three slams in five days - Anthony DeSclafani connected Saturday against the Cubs, becoming the first Reds pitcher to hit a slam since Bob Purkey in 1959. Cincinnati leads the majors with seven slams this season.

    POWER OUTAGE

Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and the Yankees have totaled just one run in dropping the first two of a three-game series at Tampa Bay. New York has the best record in the big leagues at 50-24 and is the only team in the majors that hasn't lost more than two straight games this year. This is the latest the Yankees have gone into a season without losing three in a row since August 1954.

    NOT HIMSELF

Bryce Harper is hitting just .149 in June, striking out 24 times in 67 at-bats. The Nationals slugger has one home run and five RBIs in 19 games this month. He has tried to bunt to beat the shift the last two days against Philadelphia - he bunted foul before fanning Friday, then was thrown out Saturday by pitcher Aaron Nola.

    LET'S SEE

Braves closer Arodys Vizcaino was unavailable Saturday due to a sore right shoulder. He felt more discomfort while throwing in the outfield before the game against Baltimore. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said he hopes Vizcaino feels better, but the team could soon face a decision on placing the right-hander on the DL.

        • Dodgers hit 7 homers in 8-7 win over Mets
          June 24, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Justin Turner hit Los Angeles' seventh home run of the game, a go-ahead drive in the 11th inning that lifted the Dodgers over the New York Mets 8-7 on Sunday.

Cody Bellinger and Kike Hernandez each homered twice as the Dodgers beat the Mets for the 12th straight time dating to 2016. Max Muncy and Joc Pederson also connected for Los Angeles. Hernandez and Muncy led off the game with back-to-back shots.

The Mets matched a team record for the most homers allowed in a game, and lost their sixth in a row overall.

Turner, a former Met, homered off Chris Flexen (0-1) with two outs to put the Dodgers up for good. Los Angeles had squandered a 7-4 lead in the eighth when Kevin Plawecki hit a tying three-run shot.

Daniel Hudson (2-2) picked up the victory with two scoreless innings.

          INDIANS 12, TIGERS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion hit an eighth-inning grand slam, helping the Indians to their season-high seventh straight win.

Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez and Jason Kipnis also connected for Cleveland, which outscored Detroit 26-3 in the three-game sweep. Ramirez finished with three hits, extending his streak of reaching base to 31 consecutive games.

Adam Plutko (4-1) pitched six innings of two-run ball, becoming the second rookie starter to beat the Tigers in the series. Shane Bieber pitched seven innings in Friday night's 12-0 win.

Tigers starter Matthew Boyd (4-6) allowed a season-high six runs in three-plus innings in his shortest outing of the season.

Detroit has lost five straight overall and is 3-10 against Cleveland this season.

          RED SOX 5, MARINERS 0

BOSTON (AP) - Chris Sale struck out 13 over seven dazzling innings and Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer, leading Boston to the victory.

Sale (7-4) gave up four hits and walked one. Joe Kelly and Matt Barnes each pitched an inning to complete the four-hitter.

Jackie Bradley Jr. had three singles and Rafael Devers added an RBI double for Boston, which struggled offensively in a 7-2 loss Saturday night after putting up 14 runs and 20 hits in the series opener.

The Mariners fell to 1-5 on their 10-game East Coast trip. Marco Gonzales (7-5) gave up five runs in six innings.

          REDS 8, CUBS 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Pitcher Michael Lorenzen and Jesse Winker connected for pinch-hit homers in Cincinnati's seven-run seventh inning, sending the Reds to their seventh straight victory.

Lorenzen's homer was the third of his career and second in two games by a Reds pitcher. Anthony DeSclafani hit a grand slam on Saturday - the first by a Reds pitcher since 1959.

Jackson Stephens (1-0) got the win as the Reds completed a four-game sweep of the Cubs for the first time in 25 years. Raisel Iglesias worked the ninth for his 13th save.

Anthony Rizzo and Albert Almora Jr. homered for Chicago, and Pedro Strop (3-1) got the loss.

          RAYS 7, YANKEES 6, 12 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Rookie Jake Bauers led off the 12th inning with a home run, finishing off Tampa Bay's three-game sweep.

The Yankees also lost catcher Gary Sanchez when he pulled up while running out a double-play grounder in the 10th. Manager Aaron Boone said Sanchez hurt his right groin/hip abductor and is probably headed for the disabled list.

Giancarlo Stanton homered while going 5 for 5 for New York. The Yankees had been the only team in the majors that hadn't lost three in a row this year.

Bauers connected on the first pitch from Chasen Shreve (2-2). Ryan Yarbrough (7-3) pitched an inning for the win.

          BRAVES 7, ORIOLES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit a two-run single in the first, pinch-hitter Dansby Swanson belted a two-run homer in the eighth and the Braves earned their first win over the Orioles in six years.

Baltimore won the first two games of the series and swept the last set between the teams in 2015. Atlanta ended a stretch of seven straight losses to the Orioles since 2012.

Mark Trumbo and Trey Mancini homered for Baltimore. David Hess (2-4) gave up five runs in four innings.

Braves right-hander Brandon McCarthy (6-3) yielded three runs in five innings.

          DIAMONDBACKS 3, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Clay Buchholz pitched five solid innings before leaving with an injury, and the Diamondbacks completed a four-game sweep of the Pirates.

Buchholz (2-1) retired his first 11 batters before Starling Marte doubled down the right-field line with two out in the fourth inning. Despite throwing just 53 pitches, he was pulled after experiencing tightness in his left side.

The injury occurred on a swing in the fifth. Buchholz called the early exit ''more precautionary.''

David Peralta hit a two-run homer for Arizona, and John Ryan Murphy also went deep. Brad Boxberger worked the ninth for his 17th save.

Pirates right-hander Trevor Williams (6-5) allowed three runs in six innings.

          CARDINALS 8, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Luke Weaver won for the first time in eight starts and Jose Martinez hit a three-run homer for St. Louis.

Weaver (4-6) allowed two runs, both in the first, and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out a season-high nine in his first victory since May 11.

          Martinez's 11th homer capped a five-run fourth that made it 6-2 Cardinals.

Christian Yelich homered for the NL Central-leading Brewers. Jhoulys Chacin (6-3) allowed a season-high eight runs in 4 1/3 innings.

          TWINS 2, RANGERS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios struck out a career-best 12 in seven innings, and the Twins beat Bartolo Colon and the Rangers.

Eddie Rosario had two hits for Minnesota, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Bobby Wilson and Robbie Grossman each singled in a run.

Berrios (8-5) surrendered just three hits, two in the first inning, while improving to 3-0 in June. Trevor Hildenberger pitched a perfect eighth and Fernando Rodney finished the three-hitter for his 17th save.

The Rangers had won seven in a row and missed out on a chance for a perfect six-game road trip. Colon (4-5) yielded two runs and seven hits in seven innings.

          ASTROS 11, ROYALS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam in Houston's eight-run second inning.

Gurriel finished with three hits as the AL West-leading Astros won for the 15th time in 17 games. Jose Altuve drove in two runs and scored twice, and Evan Gattis connected for a pinch-hit homer.

Gerrit Cole (9-1) struck out eight while pitching five innings of one-run ball. The right-hander has struck out at least eight in 12 of his 16 starts.

Kansas City dropped to 3-18 in June. Jason Hammel (2-9) was tagged for nine runs, matching his season high, in four innings.

          MARLINS 8, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Derek Dietrich homered for the third straight game and tied a career high with four hits, leading Miami to the victory.

Drew Rucinski (2-1) got the win in relief of Caleb Smith, who exited in the second inning with left shoulder tightness. Kyle Barraclough earned his seventh save.

The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 31 minutes by a strong storm that dropped heavy rain and hail on Coors Field.

Nolan Arenado and Gerardo Parra homered for Colorado. German Marquez (5-8) was tagged for six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

          GIANTS 3, PADRES 2, 11 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Hunter Pence hit a two-run double in the 11th inning, sending San Francisco to the win.

With one out and the bases loaded, Pence came up with the game-ending hit against Brad Hand (1-4). Pence raised his arms once the ball got past first baseman Eric Hosmer.

Cory Spangenberg had put San Diego ahead in the top of the 11th with a single.

Ty Blach (5-5) got one out for the win.

          BLUE JAYS 7, ANGELS 6, 10 INNINGS

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Kendrys Morales connected for a pinch-hit homer in the 10th inning, lifting Toronto to the win.

Morales hit a two-out drive to right off Hansel Robles for his eighth homer. Robles (2-3) was making his Angels debut after he was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets.

Curtis Granderson, Aledmys Diaz and Devon Travis also homered for Toronto, which split the four-game series after dropping the first two. Ryan Tepera (5-2) got the win and Tyler Clippard earned his fourth save.

          WHITE SOX 10, ATHLETICS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Yoan Moncada broke out of a slump with a three-run homer and six RBIs, and the White Sox salvaged a split of the four-game series.

Daniel Palka and Yolmer Sanchez also connected for the White Sox, who had lost nine of 10. Carlos Rodon (1-2) pitched a season-high eight innings in his fourth start after missing the beginning of the year while recovering from shoulder surgery last September.

Oakland set a modern major league record when Mark Canha hit a drive to left on Rodon's first pitch of the fifth, extending the A's streak to 25 straight road games with a homer. But Paul Blackburn (1-2) allowed six runs and eight hits in five-plus innings.

              Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

              13) If you have Showtime on your TV, there is an interesting documentary about tennis called Love Means Zero, about tennis coach Nick Bolleteri and his dealings with famous players. I’m not a big tennis fan, but the stories they tell are pretty interesting.

              12) Maybe 15 years ago, I disappeared for several days for my summer vacation and just hung out at a place with a nice pool and sat in the shade and read college football magazines and decompressed for a few days, just relaxing and doing as little as possible.

One day, I’m sitting in the shade and this couple comes by the pool and gets in the water- they start talking, making no effort to hide their conversation from me. It was quickly obvious that they were not married or dating.

              11) The guy is a tennis coach and he is trying to convince the woman to have her daughter uproot her life and transfer to a tennis academy in Florida. The daughter had just finished 9th grade and apparently was a very good player, and this guy is giving his A-1 recruiting pitch to this lady for her and the daughter to move from upstate New York to Florida.

Then the daughter shows up at the pool; she had been hitting tennis balls against the board on the courts behind the hotel. She is 5-10 or 5-11 and she could’ve been a model, but she is only 15 or 16 years old- she looked older.

              10) You could almost see the dollar signs rolling up in the eyeballs of the tennis coach, like a freakin’ slot machine; if this young lady became a tennis star, she’d be a big star, both on and off the court. She would be a winning lottery ticket, one with very long legs.

This whole thing lasted about 35-40 minutes, and then they were gone. Always wonder what the mother decided to do and how the young lady’s life is going now.

              9) Mets’ 1B prospect Peter Alonso hit three homers, knocked in seven runs in only his 7th game for AAA Las Vegas. He hit .314 with 52 RBI in the AA Eastern League before being promoted. He is 23 and played in college for the Florida Gators.

              8) Jerry Blevins made 532 relief appearances in the majors before finally starting a game Sunday for the Mets, when Jason Vargas went on the DL. Last time Blevins had started a game was for Peoria in the Class A Midwest League in 2005.

First two batters Blevins faced Sunday both homered; he is the 2nd pitcher since 1900 to give up back/back homers to the first two hitters in his first MLB start.

Other guy was Don Hendrickson of the 1945 Boston Braves; he pitched all nine innings that day, winning 13-8. Blevins lasted two innings yesterday.

              7) A’s will start Edwin Jackson on the mound this week, making Oakland the 13th major league team Jackson has pitched for, which ties a major league record (Octavio Dotel).

              6) Odd stat from Jason McCallum: In Chris Sale’s last six starts, Red Sox offense went 7-60 (.117) and scored 1 run in innings 1-3. The one run scored on a homer by Mookie Betts.

              5) San Diego Padres’ team bus didn’t show up at their hotel Sunday morning, so the team rode a double-decker tour bus to their game against the Giants..

              4) The 2019 NFL Draft will be in Nashville; the NBA should start moving its draft around the country, the way the NHL, NFL does. Excellent idea.

              3) In 1917, Red Sox pitcher Ernie Shore threw a no-hitter after relieving starter Babe Ruth, who punched the umpire when he started the game by walking the first batter.

              2) Term of the Day: “mentally reboot”
Mets are benching SS Amed Rosario for a couple days, so he can “mentally reboot”, according to Mickey Callaway.

Wish I had thought of that one back in my working days; would’ve been awesome to call in sick, saying I needed to mentally reboot.

              1) Dodgers 8, Mets 7 (11)— LA’s first five hits of the day were all solo home runs.

First three runs Mets scored were all by guys who reached base getting hit by a pitch.

              • LEADING OFF: Jackson set to play for 13th team, Sanchez hurt
                June 24, 2018

A look at what's happening around baseball Monday:

                THIRTEEN AND COUNTING

Edwin Jackson is set to play for his 13th team in the majors, matching the most by any big leaguer. The injury-depleted Athletics are promoting him from Triple-A to start at Detroit. The 34-year-old righty will tie the clubs mark held by former reliever Octavio Dotel. Jackson made his debut in 2003 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and later pitched for Tampa Bay, Detroit, Arizona, the Chicago White Sox, St. Louis, Washington, the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta, Miami, San Diego and Baltimore.

Jackson and Dotel, who finished up in 2013, were teammates just once in their overlapping careers. They were part of the same three-team trade in July 2011 that sent them to St. Louis, and pitched in the World Series for the champion Cardinals.

                AILING

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez is likely headed to the disabled after pulling up while running out a double-play grounder Sunday at Tampa Bay. Manager Aaron Boone said Sanchez hurt his right groin/hip abductor and ''it's probably going to be a DL situation.'' He will have an MRI.

Sanchez is hitting only .190 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs, a season after he made the AL All-Star team while batting .278 with 33 homers and 90 RBIs.

                BUCKEYE BROOMS

The AL Central-leading Indians and the NL Central cellar-dwelling Reds each have seven-game winning streaks. Both teams finished up sweeps in Ohio over the weekend and now hit the road - Mike Clevinger (6-2, 3.00 ERA) starts for Cleveland in St. Louis, and Tyler Mahle (6-6, 3.89) pitches for Cincinnati in Atlanta.

                REST UP

Cubs star Kris Bryant is day to day with a sore left shoulder. The third baseman missed his second straight start Sunday at Cincinnati, but doesn't expect to be out much longer. Bryant is hitting .280 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs in 66 games. The Cubs next open a series at Dodger Stadium.

                HE'S O-K

Astros ace Justin Verlander leads the majors with a 1.60 ERA and is among the league leaders in strikeouts. He's fanned at least 10 three times this season - Houston is 0-3 in those games, totaling just two runs. Verlander (9-2) and J.A. Happ (9-3) both try to reach double digits in wins when Toronto visits Minute Maid Park.

                GETTING CLOSER

Cubs right-hander Yu Darvish is ready to make a rehab start for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League. He's been out since May 20 because of triceps tendinitis. He's expected to throw around 75 pitches, and hopes to be back in the majors after that outing. Darvish is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA in eight starts since signing a $126 million, six-year deal with Chicago as a free agent.

                TAKE A BREAK

Mets shortstop Amed Rosario is being held out of the starting lineup as part of a mental break over the next couple of days. The 22-year-old is hitting just .249 and has struggled this month.

''We brought him in and talked to him, sat him down and we're going to make sure that we take these next couple of days to work on some things in his overall game,'' manager Mickey Callaway said. ''This young kid is still trying to develop at the major league level and these couple of days will allow him to get some work done in the cage, some work done in the field tomorrow taking groundballs and things like that. So we thought this would be really good for him.''

The Mets have lost six straight. They've also dropped 13 of 14 at Citi Field heading into a home series against Pittsburgh.

                        Buckeye State Bonanza
The Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians combined to make it a perfect week for the state of Ohio. The Reds and Indians are a combined 14-0 across their past 14 games, as each club is on a seven-game winning streak. The run by the Reds is quite a bit more surprising, as they're cellar dwellers in the National League Central Division. The huge winning streak has helped them carve into what was once an ugly run differential. It's now at just minus-43. They'll hit the road for Atlanta on Monday looking to stay hot with Tyler Mahle on the mound. The Reds have won five straight with Mahle on the hill, and five of his past six outings away from home. They have also rattled off four straight wins vs. right-handed starting pitchers. The Braves will counter with Mike Foltynewicz, and they're just 6-15 across his past 21, and 0-4 in his past four against NL Central foes.

The Indians have opened up an eight-game gap in the American League Central, sweeping the Tigers out of Progressive Field. They're now 10-3 against the Tigers, and 25-13 overall in their division. The only chink in the armor for the Tribe has been on the road, where they're 16-20. That's where the Indians will be starting on Monday night in St. Louis. The Indians have rattled off 23 victories in their past 29 appearances on Monday, but they're just 17-41 in their past 58 interleague road games against a team with a winning record, 2-5 in their past seven interleague road games vs. RHP and 1-4 in Mike Clevinger's past five road assignments. They're also 0-5 in his past five against a winning team. Luckily for the Indians, the Cards are just 1-4 in their past five at home, 2-5 in their past seven interleague battles and 0-5 in John Gant's past five outings.

                        Looking Ahead

                        Monday, June 25

The Blue Jays head down to the Gulf for a battle against the Astros. The Jays have gotten a little hotter lately, going 5-1 in their past six games against a right-handed starting pitcher, although Justin Verlander of the Astros represents the biggest test in a while. Toronto has posted a solid 6-2 record in their past eight games on a Monday, but they're just 3-10 in the past 13 games on the road. They're also 3-9 in the past 12 games against American League West Division opponents. The good news for Toronto is that they'll have LHP JA Happ on the bump. They're 10-4 over his past 14 assignments, while going 12-5 in his past 17 games against AL West opponents. Toronto is also a solid 36-17 over the past 53 with Happ on the hill against a team with a winning record.

For the Astros, they have posted a 5-2 mark in their past seven tries vs. LHP. They're also 5-2 in the past seven at Minute Maid Park against teams with a losing overall mark. Houston has posted a 42-19 record in their past 61 home games, and they're 35-16 in the past 51 against teams with a losing overall mark. Verlander has been gold for the defending champs, as Houston has posted a 19-7 record across his past 26 assignments, although they are a dismal 1-4 in the past five home outings by J.V. The Jays have managed just six wins in their past 21 trips to Houston, while the 'under' has connected in six of the past eight meetings at Minute Maid Park.

The Cubs and Dodgers hook up in L.A. in the only late-night game on Monday night. These two clubs just met last week at Wrigley Field, with the Cubs posting two wins in three tries. However, Chicago limps in after a shocking four-game sweep at the hands of the cellar-dwelling Reds. The Cubs pitching staff allowed 7.8 runs per game in the four-game brooming, so they'll need better pitching against Matt Kemp and the Dodgers. They turn to Duane Underwood Jr. in his major league debut on Monday. He'll be tasked with turning around an 0-5 skid in the past five road games, while going 0-4 in their past four vs. RHP. The Dodgers counter with Kenta Maeda, and they're 6-2 in his past eight starts vs. NL Central foes. They're also 12-5 in his past 17 starts at Chavez Ravine.

                        Weather Report
The winds will be howling at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, gusting from 12-15 mph from home plate to the left-center field power alley. Precipitation will not be a problem in Queens for the Pirates-Mets battle, but the wind will also be gusting there, too. However, the winds will be out of the north from 9-12 mph blowing in from right-center field to home plate.

The only trouble spot as far as precipitation will be in St. Louis, where there is a 40 percent or better chance of rain from 6pm through midnight.

                        Tuesday, June 26
It will be a southpaw battle in Detroit between A's LHP Sean Manaea and Tigers LHP Blaine Hardy. Oakland has posted a 5-2 mark over their past seven on the road with Manaea on the hill. They're also 6-0 in Manaea's past six starts against American League Central foes, while going 36-15 in their past 51 against Central opponents overall. They're also 20-8 in the past 28 against teams with a losing overall record while going 4-1 in their past five vs. LHP. For the Tigers, they're on a five-game losing skid heading into Monday's game. They are also a dismal 11-24 in their past 35 against AL West teams, while posting a 13-27 record in the past 40 at home vs. a team with a winning record. However, they have won five of their past six tries vs. LHP, including 4-0 in their past four at home vs. southpaws.

The Twins and White Sox will battle on the south side after a scheduled day off. Minnesota has struggled with rest, going just 3-7 in their past 10 games after a day off. They're also just 4-9 in their past 13 on the road, while going 1-5 in Lance Lynn's past six starts when opening a new series. The Pale Hose counter with Reynaldo Lopez, and they're 1-5 in his past six starts while going 0-5 in his past five inside the division. Chicago has managed a poor 2-6 record in their past eight at home, while going 18-39 in their past 57 vs. RHP. Minnesota has owned this series recently, going 9-3 in the past 12 overall, while posting an 11-5 mark in their past 16 trips to Guaranteed Rate Field.

Colorado and San Francisco renew acquaintances in the Bay Area. The Rockies struggled against the Marlins over the weekend, now they try to get better on the road. They're 0-7 in Chad Bettis' past seven battles against NL West rivals, and they're 1-6 in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record. Colorado has managed a subpar 2-5 mark in the past seven on the road. San Francisco has won five of the past six overall, and they're 5-1 in the past six at home. The Giants are also 13-3 in their past 16 vs. RHP, while going 4-1 in Derek Holland's past five starts. The Giants are 7-2 in the past nine at home vs. the Rockies, although they're 0-4 the past four times seeing Bettis at AT&T Park.

                        Weather Report
The weather is expected to move in to the Motor City in the later innings, perhaps hindering the A's-Tigers battle at Comerica. There is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms around 9pm, increasing to better than 50 percent through the overnight hours.

At Fenway Park, the Angels and Red Sox will be dealing with a jetstream to left-center field blowing at 11-14 mph. The same holds true for the Pirates-Mets game. There will be no precip, but winds gusting from 11-14 mph to the left-center field power alley. A hot wind will be blowing in from right field to home plate at 12-15 mph with temperatures hovering around the 100-degree mark. In San Francisco, the Rockies-Giants will also be experiencing gusty winds humming from 13-17 mph out to left-center field.

It wouldn't be summer if Atlanta wasn't on the weather worry list. The Reds and Braves have thunderstorm chances of 40 percent for most of the evening, so it will be hit or miss there. Mother Nature might be the only thing that can cool off the Reds these days.

                          • MLB

                            Monday, June 25

                            STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

                            Streaking:
Tyler Skaggs, Los Angeles Angels (6-4, 2.81 ERA, $83)

The overall value has been modest, but Skaggs has been one of the top pitchers in baseball this month. Skaggs has reeled off three consecutive victories, allowing just one run while racking up 22 strikeouts over 20 sensational innings in that span. And with only one of those wins coming with the Angels as a favorite of better than -111, Skaggs has turned a tidy profit in June.

Look for that success to continue Monday night, with the Angels installed at -165 on Bet365 against Brad Keller and the woeful Kansas City Royals.

                            Slumping:
Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (6-4, 3.08 ERA, $5)

It has been an up-and-down kind of year for the veteran southpaw, who earned value in seven of eight starts during a recent stretch but has dropped his last two starts – including one as a -200 favorite. Gonzalez sports a 6.20 ERA in four starts this month, and has allowed at least one home run in six of his previous seven outings.

Gonzalez and the Nationals are +100 underdogs against red-hot Blake Snell and the Tampa Bay Rays; given the difficulty of the pitching matchup, bettors shouldn't put their faith in Gonzalez to turn things around Monday.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                                13) Good discussion on strategy during the interesting Phils-Nationals game Sunday night; Phillies walked 19-year old Juan Soto to load bases with two out, with Daniel Murphy coming up next. Alex Rodriguez said he wouldn’t have done that. ARod gives opinions before the fact and that makes him fun to listen to.

Its a gray area, since Soto has been hitting really well and Murphy just recently returned from a long injury absence, but Murphy has a long history as a terrific hitter. Plus if you walk Soto the bases are loaded, which puts more pressure on the pitcher.

Sure enough, Murphy gets a hit, the Nationals go on to win, but it is part of what makes baseball so interesting; we’ll never know what Soto would’ve done had they chosen to pitch to him.

                                12) James Harden won MVP in the NBA; Victor Oladipo won Most Improved Player and Ben Simmons won Rookie of the Year.

                                11) This is a funny tweet from Rachel Harper- I have no idea who she is, but…….

“For the past two years the ticket man at my station has baffled me. Some days we get on like a house on fire, chatting about life. Other days he won’t even return a hello…turns out to be a pair of identical twins who both work there…….

                                TWO SEPERATE MEN.

                                TWO YEARS GUYS.”

                                10) Oklahoma football coach Lincoln Riley has a new contract worth $5M a year; in his first year as coach of the Sooners, they were 1st first nationally in total yards (8,114), yards per play (8.29), touchdowns (80), yards per game (579.6) and averaged 5.6 yards per rushing attempt.

TheMMQB.com has an interesting article with Riley this week, about how NFL coaches are going to Norman to pick Riley’s brain about how the Sooners do things.

The NFL has become more like college ball, in part because NFL coaches now have less time to work with players in the offseason, much like how college coaches are limited (20 hours a week) during the season.

                                9) Los Angeles Rams have a financial literacy program every rookie has to finish before signing his first contract and getting his first check. They help the players prepare for the all new things they’re about to experience, both good and bad.

Rams’ CEO Kevin Demoff’s dad was Marvin Demoff, a really good player agent back in the day, so he knows the pitfalls of what can happen if a player’s personal life gets messed up. Also, it is different living in an entertainment center like Los Angeles; lot more opportunities.

                                8) When Sam Darnold fell to the Jets with the 3rd pick in the NFL draft in April, their people were so happy they wanted to put the card in right away, but for TV purposes, the NFL made them stretch it out for the whole 15:00, before Darnold was announced as the Jets’ pick.

Jets’ GM Mike Maccagnan took five scouting trips to see Darnold play live in 2017, and VP of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger spent 17 nights in Los Angeles during the season, doing his due diligence on Darnold. Lot of grunt work in scouting.

                                7) A Jets’ scout’s report marked Baker Mayfield a perfect 9—exceedingly uncommon—as a teammate, leader and worker, but gave him lower grades elsewhere.

                                6) This past week was Week 12 of our fantasy baseball season; with three weeks til the All-Star break, it is kind of the dog days of baseball, especially for bad teams.

Surprised me that the three bottom teams in our fantasy league all won this past week; that doesn’t happen much. Competitive league, lot of close games. Makes it more fun.

                                5) Denver Nuggets and star Nikola Jokic agreed on a 5-year, $146.5M maximum contract.

                                4) Turns out the Chargers would’ve wanted Lamar Jackson to play some WR had they drafted him, and there was no way he would agree to that, which is part of why he wouldn’t run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

I think when we see the Ravens play this fall, if he doesn’t start, Jackson will get on the field for some trick plays, lining up at WR but he’ll throw the ball off of end-arounds and stuff like that. Ravens are smart enough to call it “two QB’s on field at once” not “Lamar playing WR.”

                                3) Ilya Kovalchuk signed a 3-year, $18M deal with the LA Kings; he is 35, and hasn’t played in the NHL since 2013. In the last five seasons, no NHL player over age 35 has scored more than 30 goals in a season.

                                2) Congrats to Detroit Tigers Leonys Martin and Jose Iglesias, who are now American citizens. Good for them!!!

                                1) RIP to Richard Harrison, “Old Man” on the Pawn Stars TV show, who passed away Monday after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Rick Harrison, owner of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop that is featured on Pawn Stars, said this: “He was my hero and I was fortunate to get a very cool ‘Old Man’ as my dad. He lived a very full life and through the History television show ‘Pawn Stars’ touched the lives of people all over, teaching them the value of loving your family, hard work and humor.”

                                RIP, sir.
