    STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

    Streaking:
Andrew Heaney, Los Angeles Angels (3-4, 3.12 ERA, -$407)

There aren’t many smoking arms taking the bump on Monday, so Andrew Heaney will have to do as our streaking hurler. The 27-year-old lefty is in his first season after Tommy John surgery and the early returns have been pretty positive. Heaney is coming off a complete game shutout against the Kansas City Royals in his last appearance and he has produced quality starts in six of his last seven outings.

Oddsmakers have the Halos as -120 road favorites against the Seattle Mariners with the total set at 8.

    Slumping:
Jordan Lyles, San Diego Padres (2-2, 4.70 ERA, $317)

This big righty gave up 11 hits – including two home runs – and eight earned runs in his last start. He has only two quality starts since becoming a part of the Padres’ rotation at the beginning of May. The Over is 4-0 in his last four trips to the mound.

    MONDAY’S TOP TRENDS

*The Under is 6-0 in Boston’s last six games.
*The Rays are 1-9 in their last 10 games.
*The Blue Jays are 4-0 in their last four games.
*The Cubs are 8-2 in their last 10 games.
*The Under is 16-5 in the last 21 games between the Cubs and Brewers.
*The Under is 8-0-1 in the White Sox’s last nine games.
*The Padres are 16-45 in their last 61 games at St. Louis.

    WEATHER WATCH

It’s a beautiful day for baseball across the country with blue skies and warm weather in the forecast. Lights winds are blowing toward home plate at Marlins Park and Camden Yards.

    • Mets cut 1B Gonzalez, call up Dom Smith
      June 11, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Looking to spark their stagnant lineup, the New York Mets are making a change at first base.

Slumping veteran Adrian Gonzalez was released following a 2-0 victory over the Yankees on Sunday night, and the Mets will recall Dominic Smith from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday when they begin a 10-game road trip in Atlanta.

The 36-year-old Gonzalez, who struck out in all three at-bats Sunday, hit .237 with six home runs and 26 RBIs for the Mets. The five-time All-Star was signed for the major league minimum during the offseason after struggling with a bad back last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets also announced they plan to call up utilityman Ty Kelly from Triple-A on Tuesday. Reserve catcher Jose Lobaton will be designated for assignment.

Smith, who turns 23 this week, was batting .260 with two homers and 25 RBIs at Las Vegas. Drafted 11th overall out of high school in 2013, the touted prospect scuffled in the majors as a rookie last season, hitting .198 with nine homers, 26 RBIs and a .658 OPS in 49 games.

He slimmed down over the winter and came to spring training this year with a chance to compete for the starting job at first base. But he was disciplined early in camp for arriving late one day and then he strained a quad, keeping him out of the lineup for most of the spring.

The Mets also could play outfielders Jay Bruce and Jose Bautista at first base. Reserve infielder Wilmer Flores, who often starts at first against left-handed pitchers, could come off the disabled list during the upcoming road trip.

Flores has been sidelined since May 28 by a sore lower back.

        • BoSox edge struggling O's in 12, 2-0
          June 11, 2018

BALTIMORE (AP) Brock Holt and Jackie Bradley Jr. each delivered a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning, and the Boston Red Sox limited the Baltimore Orioles to five hits in a 2-0 victory Monday night.

A pitching duel between Dylan Bundy and Steven Wright was ultimately decided long after both starters departed.

Xander Bogaerts led off the 12th with a single against Mychal Givens (0-3), and the Red Sox went on to load the bases before Holt broke the scoreless deadlock with a fly to center. Bradley followed with a fly ball to score Rafael Devers, who had doubled.

Heath Hembree (3-1) struck out the side in the 11th and Craig Kimbrel got three outs for his 21st save.

It was the fifth straight loss for the Orioles, who have been shut out seven times this season.

          CUBS 7, BREWERS 2, 11 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Anthony Rizzo homered down the right-field line on the first pitch of a five-run 11th inning to help Chicago beat Milwaukee and jump into first place in the NL Central.

Rizzo turned on a fastball from Matt Albers (3-2) for a towering shot that snapped a 2-all tie. The Cubs scored four more runs in the inning with two outs, including a two-run double by Jason Heyward. He had three hits and three RBIs, including a tying single in the eighth off lefty reliever Josh Hader.

Trailing 2-1 most of the night, the Cubs scored six times over the last four innings against the Brewers' normally lights-out bullpen. Chicago took a half-game lead in the division and won its seventh straight over Milwaukee.

Randy Rosario (3-0) retired all six batters he faced.

          MARINERS 5, ANGELS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Nelson Cruz homered twice and surprising Seattle overcame Mike Trout's two home runs in a win over Los Angeles.

Ryon Healy hit a two-run shot for the Mariners, who chased Andrew Heaney (3-5) early and won for the ninth time in 11 games. Seattle sits atop the AL West by a half-game over the World Series champion Houston Astros.

Trout tied Boston slugger J.D. Martinez for the major league lead with 21 homers. Albert Pujols also went deep for the Angels.

Mariners starter Wade LeBlanc (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings. He loaded the bases in the fifth but struck out Justin Upton to escape unscathed.

Cruz drove in three runs and Edwin Diaz pitched a clean ninth for his major league-best 24th save in 27 chances.

          DIAMONDBACKS 9, PIRATES 5

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona scored two runs on wild pitches in the eighth inning, Jake Lamb hit a tying, three-run homer in the seventh and the Diamondbacks took advantage of a hit by pitch to rally past Pittsburgh.

The Pirates led 5-0 behind Joe Musgrove until the right-hander opened the seventh by hitting Chris Owings with the first pitch - possibly as retaliation for Josh Harrison being plunked in the top half. Nick Ahmed hit a run-scoring single, Daniel Descalso had another off Edgar Santana and Lamb tied it at 5 with a three-run homer to left field.

Ketel Marte singled off Kyle Crick (0-1) leading off the eighth, moved to second on a walk and raced to third after a pickoff attempt at second base by catcher Elias Diaz. Marte scored when the next pitch by Crick bounded to the backstop. Descalso put Arizona up 8-5 with a two-run triple and scored on Dovydas Neverauskas' wild pitch.

Archie Bradley (2-1) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.

          INDIANS 4, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Carrasco struck out 11 while pitching two-hit ball over seven innings as Cleveland blanked Chicago.

Michael Brantley hit his 11th homer, Yan Gomes had a two-run double and the AL Central leaders took advantage of another wild outing by Lucas Giolito (4-7) to win for the fifth time in six games. The Indians improved to 4-0 against the White Sox.

Carrasco (8-4) gave up singles to Kevan Smith and Charlie Tilson in the second before striking out Adam Engel to end the threat. Three relievers completed the two-hitter.

Giolito (4-7) threw more balls (47) than strikes (46) in giving up four runs and four hits in five-plus innings.

          MARLINS 7, GIANTS 5

MIAMI (AP) - Madison Bumgarner blew a sixth inning lead and was ejected on the way out of his second start this season and Miami rallied past San Francisco.

J.T. Realmuto had three hits including his seventh home run of the season and drove in two and Brian Anderson homered, doubled twice, and drove in two runs for the Marlins.

Bumgarner was pulled after giving up a tying hit to Lewis Brinson with one out in the sixth. Upset over calls on a four-pitch walk earlier in the inning, Bumbarner had words for home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak on his way to the dugout and was ejected.

Brandon Crawford's sacrifice fly in the seventh gave the Giants a 5-4 lead. Anderson responded with an RBI double to tie the game at 5. Realmuto followed with a two-run home run to center field off Sam Dyson (2-1).

Adam Conley (2-0) tossed a scoreless inning and Kyle Barraclough pitched a flawless ninth for his third save in five chances.

          RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jake Bauers hit his first career home run to put Tampa Bay ahead in the fourth inning.

Bauers' two-run homer off Sam Gaviglia after Matt Duffy's single erased a 4-3 Toronto lead. Tampa Bay tacked on three runs in the seventh with the help of a bases-loaded throwing error by reliever John Axford.

Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough, who leads the major leagues with 44 relief innings, started and pitched six innings for the Rays. Yarbrough (5-2) gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out three in his first start since May 14.

The Rays, who won for only the second time in 11 games.

Gaviglia (2-2) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. Teoscar Hernandez hit his 11th homer for the Blue Jays, who had won four straight.

          CARDINALS 5, PADRES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marcell Ozuna and Jose Martinez hit two-run homers, rookie Jack Flaherty pitched into the seventh inning, and St. Louis beat San Diego for the 13th time in 18 meetings.

Jedd Gyorko added a one-out home run in the eighth, helping drop the Padres to their 46th loss in their last 62 games in St. Louis.

Flaherty (3-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings, his second-longest outing this season. He allowed one run and three hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Flaherty retired 14 consecutive batters before issuing a one-walk in the seventh. John Brebbia relieved and walked the bases loaded before getting two strikeouts to end the threat.

Bud Norris earned his 13th save in 15 chances.

Jordan Lyles (2-3) gave up 11 hits and four runs in six innings.

            • LEADING OFF: Harper, Nats visit Yankees; Colon seeks record
              June 11, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

              CLASH OF THE TITANS

Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals visit Yankee Stadium for the opener of a two-game interleague series between World Series contenders. With the Nationals playing the first of five straight games in American League parks where they'll need a designated hitter, it's possible Daniel Murphy (right knee surgery) could make his season debut. The second baseman rejoined the team Sunday, taking batting practice and fielding grounders. He planned to accompany the Nationals to New York.

              FOR THE RECORD

Bartolo Colon (3-3, 4.16 ERA) pitches for the Texas Rangers at Dodger Stadium. The 45-year-old righty is tied with Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for the most wins by a Dominican-born pitcher at 243.

              HELP WANTED

Milwaukee right-hander Chase Anderson could use some run support against the Cubs. Anderson has a 2.79 ERA over his last three starts vs. Chicago but the Brewers have been shut out each time, outscored by a combined 9-0. Anderson (4-5) hopes the bats get going when he faces Tyler Chatwood (3-4) in the second of a three-game series between the top two teams in the NL Central.

              WHO'S ON FIRST?

Hoping to energize a sagging lineup, the Mets will have a new starter at first base when they begin a 10-game road trip in Atlanta. The team released 36-year-old Adrian Gonzalez, a five-time All-Star, after Sunday night's 2-0 victory over the Yankees. Touted prospect Dominic Smith will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, and New York could also play outfielders Jay Bruce and Jose Bautista at first. Smith, who turns 23 this week, was batting .260 with two homers and 25 RBIs at Las Vegas. Drafted 11th overall out of high school in 2013, he scuffled in the majors as a rookie last season, hitting .198 with nine homers, 26 RBIs and a .658 OPS in 49 games.

              GETTING HEALTHY

White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte as he works his way back from a strained right hamstring. General manager Rick Hahn said the 2017 All-Star will need at least seven to 10 days before he is activated. Garcia hasn't played since April 23. He is batting .233 with four RBIs in 18 games after hitting .330 with 80 RBIs last year. ... Gold Glove center fielder Kevin Kiermaier is headed to Class A Charlotte as he rehabs from a torn ligament in his right thumb. Kiermaier hopes to rejoin the Tampa Bay Rays on June 22 for a series against the Yankees.

Tuesday’s List of 13; Nobody asked me, but…….

                13) New Jersey governor Phil Murphy signed the sports betting bill. Sports betting begins at Monmouth Park at 10:30 am Thursday, the same day soccer’s World Cup starts.

                12) NBA Summer League is next month in Las Vegas; 76ers still haven’t announced if last year’s #1 pick, Markelle Fultz, will play or not.

                11) If you really like the NBA, I highly recommend going to the Summer League; for $30, you can sit inside in air conditioning all day (it will be 110 or so outside) and watch NBA games, and you might meet some famous people, since everyone pretty much goes in/out the same doors.

                10) Detroit Pistons gave new coach Dwane Casey a 5-year contract.

                9) If Shohei Ohtani needs Tommy John surgery, he won’t pitch again until 2020. Angels aren’t saying much yet.

No idea how it would affect him as a hitter if he has TJ surgery. Could he DH late next year if he has the surgery this summer?

                8) Texas 4, Tennessee Tech 1— Longhorns are in College World Series for 36th time; no other school has been in the CWS more than 25 times.

                7) In college baseball, six of eight Super Regionals series went the maximum three games, which is most ever. This is the 20th year of the Super Regional format.

                6) In their last ten home games, Mets are 3 for 55 with runners in scoring position.

In their last four home games, Red Sox are 2 for 37 with RISP.

                5) QB Hunter Johnson transfers from Clemson to Northwestern; he will sit out this season, then have three years left to play for the Wildcats.

                4) NY-Penn League starts Friday night; the short season rookie league has a team over the river from here in Troy at Hudson Valley CC, where the Astros’ farm club the ValleyCats play home games.

If you’re in the Albany area and like affordable fun, the ValleyCat games are well worth it.

                3) Giants’ 3B Evan Longoria made his 11th error last night in Miami; he had 12 errors all of last season, when he played more than half his games on artificial turf.

                2) Speaking of artificial turf, lot of these college baseball teams have artificial turf fields. Wonder if that makes scouting infielders tougher?

                1) Baseball can be a tough business; Ji-Man Choi hit a grand slam for the Brewers in a huge spot Saturday in Philly, was mobbed by his teammates in the dugout.

The next day? He got traded to Tampa Bay, for Brad Miller.

                        • Who's Hot and Who's Not
                          June 11, 2018

                          Week of June 11th

Last week we debuted this piece discussing the prospects of the Washington Nationals 'under' run, the Miami Marlins struggles with starter Jose Urena on the hill, and two WNBA teams in the Connecticut Sun and Minnesota Lynx where the former was a great money earner and the latter hadn't cashed a point spread ticket yet.

Well, since that piece went up, the Connecticut Sun stayed hot even with losing their first game of the year the following day. Connecticut finished the week with a 2-1 SU (1-2 ATS record) though with the lone ATS win coming against the aforementioned Minnesota Lynx. That was yet another loss for the defending WNBA champs who did manage to get their first winning ATS ticket a few days earlier, albeit by a single point.

For the two MLB teams mentioned, Miami got their first win with Urena on the hill the following day (7-4 over St Louis) and managed to have a solid .500 record (3-3 SU) the rest of the week. Urena's second start of the week was another defeat, as bettors going back to fading Miami with him on the hill ended up getting rewarded once again.

Meanwhile, Washington had a light week with only five games on the schedule, and after cashing another 'under' ticket to make it 10 straight – thanks to having Max Scherzer on the hill – last Tuesday, the Nats followed that up with three straight no-doubt 'overs' where we saw 13, 14, and 12 runs scored. The week ended with a surprising 2-0 home loss to the Giants with Scherzer on the hill once again, so looking at the low side of the total in Washington games when Scherzer starts is a must.

Streaks are made to be broken and last week we saw three of the four teams mentioned in this piece snap their respective streaks the next time out. Will that be the case again this week? I'm not sure but less discuss a few of the streaking teams in sports today.

                          Who's Hot

MLB – Teams on the “Left Coast” (AL/NL West squads)

If you are looking to back some of the hotter teams in baseball right now you'd better steer your eyes westward as it's that division in both leagues that have some surging squads. In the AL West we've got Seattle leading the way with an 8-2 SU record in their last 10 games (12-4 SU last 16), followed closely by Houston (7-3 SU last 10), and the L.A Angels (7-3 SU last 10).

L.A and Seattle begin a three-game set in the Pacific Northwest tonight so something will have to give there, and given Seattle's tougher schedule after this tough series (seven with Boston, three with the Yankees) following this Angels series, the Mariners could be the best candidate for a dramatic downturn in the coming weeks.

Over in the NL West we've got the L.A Dodgers surging back into the race with a 7-3 SU mark over their last 10 games, a number that can be stretched out to a 17-6 SU run over their last 23 games. It's those type of runs many have expected from L.A all year, and with a brief two-game interleague series against the lone AL West team not on a good run – Texas (3-7 SU last 10) – good things could be in store for the Dodgers again early this week.

San Francisco owns the best 10-game mark though of any NL West team though at 8-2 SU, and they do have a big series with those Dodgers this upcoming weekend. But we've also got Arizona (7-3 SU last 10) and even San Diego (7-3 SU last 10) making noise in this division, so keep an eye on those teams as well.

                          Who's Not

MLB – Teams on the “Right Coast” (AL/NL East squads)

The East division in both leagues have some powerhouse squads with the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox, Nationals and Braves all having a great first few months of the year, but the teams from those divisions that everyone knew would be in “tank mode” this year appear to have hunkered down in the basement of thier division.

Miami continues to be bad in the NL, and with a 3-7 SU record their last 10, and with a 6-15 SU mark when you stretch things out further, this is one team that should be on everyone's fade list. This week doesn't start out well for them either as they host the surging San Francisco Giants with Madison Bumgarner on the hill for SF in Game 1 tonight.

The New York Mets managed to snap an eight-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Yankees on Sunday night baseball, but this is another team that should be considered a strong fade. Tanking was not really part of the plan for the Mets this year, but key injuries have hit them hard and with them being a team that's so reliant on the HR ball to score, cold stretches are going to happen.

Over in the AL, it's the Baltimore Orioles (2-8 SU last 10) and Tampa Bay Rays (1-9 SU last 10) bringing up the rear as nobody wearing an Orioles jersey can be happy these days. Baltimore is already 24.5 games out of 1st in the division and we haven't even hit Fathers Day yet. That's downright embarrassing and at 19-45 SU, backing the Orioles on the ML is something bettors do at their own peril. Oddly enough though, the Orioles have already seen significant line movement come their way tonight at home against Boston in what is one of the more puzzling moves of the day.

Tampa Bay also begins the week at home against an AL East division rival with the Toronto Blue Jays coming to town. The Blue Jays just swept Baltimore in a four-game set over the weekend, but despite that, they aren't a very good team and historically have always had issues playing at Tropicana Field. If there was one of these struggling teams I'd look to flip it around soon, at least in terms of getting a few wins over the next couple of days it would be this Tampa Bay team. And quite frankly the Rays better find a way to win their series with Toronto, because on deck they've got the Yankees, Astros, and Yankees again as their next three series'. Yikes!

                          • Braves, Mets hook up
                            June 12, 2018

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves

The New York Mets visit the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night in a game that can be seen on ESPN. The Mets have to be very relieved, as they broke an 8-game losing streak by beating the Yankees on Sunday night.

The Mets head out on the road for a long 10-game road trip, beginning with a quick two-game series in Atlanta. The probable pitching matchup for Tuesday has Jason Vargas taking on Mike Foltynewicz. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves
Date and Time: Tuesday, June 12, 2018, 7:35 p.m. ET
                            Location: SunTrust Park, Atlanta, GA
                            MLB Odds: Braves -153, O/U 8.5 under
Probable Pitchers: Jason Vargas vs. Mike Foltynewicz
                            TV Coverage: ESPN

The Mets have actually been better on the road than they have at home. They are 15-13 on the road and just 13-21 at home. They have gone over 14 times on the road, under 13 times, with one push. The Mets are scoring just 3.8 runs per game and giving up just over 4 runs per contest. New York’s offense has done very little of late, as in their last nine games they have scored a total of 13 runs. The Mets have really missed Yoenis Cespedes in the middle of their lineup.

The Braves are returning home after a poor road trip out west that saw them go just 2-4. Atlanta is 16-12 at home this season, with 12 games going over the total, 13 going under, with three pushes. They are scoring almost 5 runs per game and giving up 3.7 per contest.

                            Starting Pitchers

The overall numbers for Jason Vargas are not good, as he is 2-4 with a 7.71 ERA, but he has been better of late. He allowed just two runs and five hits last time out against Baltimore. He has allowed just two earned runs in his last 10 innings. The key for Vargas is the first inning, as his ERA in the first inning is 18.00, while his ERA in all other innings is 4.63.

Foltynewicz is 5-4 with a 2.31 ERA. He has been very good lately with a 0.97 ERA in his last six starts. He gave up five hits and two runs last time out against San Diego but his offense did very little in a 3-1 loss. He has a 1.29 ERA in his last three starts and his record in those starts is 2-1.

                            Key Stats

The Mets are 21-10 in the last 31 meetings in Atlanta. The Mets are 4-9 in their last 13 vs. the National League East. The Mets are 23-56 in their last 79 vs. a team with a winning record. The Mets are 3-14 in their last 17 games following a win. The Mets are 1-4 in Vargas' last 5 road starts.

The Braves are 22-7 in their last 29 games following a loss. The Braves are 16-7 in their last 23 vs. the National League East. The Braves are 2-6 in their last 8 home games vs. a left-handed starter. The Braves are 2-7 in Foltynewicz’s last 9 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 6-0 in the Mets last 6 overall. The Under is 16-5 in the Mets last 21 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 4-1 in Vargas' last 5 starts overall. The Under is 5-0 in the Braves last 5 home games. The Under is 5-1-2 in Foltynewicz’s last 8 home starts.

                            Mets vs. Braves Picks

The price on the Braves is a little high, perhaps too high. The Mets got a big monkey off their back by ending their losing streak and the Braves simply don’t give Foltynewicz much support. I am tempted to take the Mets at the price, but I just don’t know how they are going to score many runs. Their offense of late has simply been terrible. I think the better choice in this game is to play the game under the total, as most of the trends point to a low scoring game, and the Braves struggle against lefties.

Mets vs. Braves Pick: Under the total
Mets vs. Braves Score Prediction: Braves 3, Mets 1

                            • HOW TO HANDICAP MLB UMPIRE BETTING STATS

One of the best kept secrets among sharp baseball bettors is using MLB home plate umpire stats when researching their daily wagers. And Covers is one of the few outlets to find these certain stats – especially as they pertain to the MLB betting odds.

Every umpire is different. Some have a large strike zone, benefiting pitchers, while others have a small strike zone, which helps hitters. Some give the home team the benefit of the doubt and others are not rattled by their surroundings.

Umpire crews are announced before the start of a series and follow a standard rotation from game-to-game, moving clockwise. That means that if an umpire is behind home plate in Game 1 of a series, they will be at third base the following night and the first base ump from Game 1 will take over calling the balls and strikes in Game 2.

Here are some simple steps to take when factoring umpire stats into your baseball bets:

                              Over/Under umps

The one MLB wager that utilizes umpire stats the most is betting baseball totals. You can find how a team is playing offensively as well as how the starting pitcher is performing in recent efforts, and should weigh those factor against the umpire calling the balls and strikes.

During the course of the MLB season, Covers tracks the Over/Under results for each game as well as for each home plate umpire. You can simply go to our MLB umpire stats and find which umpires call more Over winners and which ones are involved with more Under winners.

Factoring those umpires with a particular lean to the Over or Under, along with the teams’ current form and starting pitchers, should give you a good idea of which side of the MLB total you want to wager on.

                              Matching umps and pitchers

As mentioned above, some umpires have a liberal strike zone while others call the game much tighter. Recognizing how a home plate ump calls the balls and strikes can give you a huge edge when capping starting pitchers and Over/Under totals.

For example, if an umpire is known for having a big strike zone and is calling a game with an accurate pitcher, who likes to paint the corners, then there is a good chance the pitcher – and their team - will excel given those added inches.

This also gives value to the Under, as the pitcher will strike out more batters than walk, putting less men on base and therefor allowing fewer runs than normal.

However, if you have a command-based pitcher on the mound and an umpire with a stingy strike zone behind home plate, that pitcher could struggle to get Ks as they attempt to nibble the corners of the strike zone.

That quickly translates to more balls than strikes and can often force a starter to throw pitches they wouldn’t normally make – just to appease the umpire – and change their approach to each hitter as they find themselves walking more batters than normal. This opens value to play against those pitchers as well as the Over, with more men getting on base due to elevate walks.

                              Home/Away and team trends

While MLB umpires are supposed to be neutral when it comes to home and away teams, there are some umpires who side with the host teams more than the visitors. There may be a subconscious factor at play with these types of umpires, who feel like they need to appease the home crowds. However, there is a flip side to those trends, as road teams have prevailed more often with certain umpires behind home plate.

Along with these Home/Away and Over/Under records, Covers generates unique umpire trends for each and every MLB game on the schedule. Throughout the course of a 162-game baseball season, betting trends will develop between home plate umpires and MLB clubs and their starting pitchers, giving leans toward certain sides and totals.

                                *STREAKING AND SLUMPING PITCHERS*

Streaking: Clay Buchholz, Arizona Diamondbacks (1-1, 1.88 ERA, -$200)

Talk about finding a gem on the scrapheap. The Diamondbacks were looking for a fourth or fifth starter when they signed this former Boston Red Sox hurler to a free agent contract. Arizona had no idea they were picking up the 2013 edition of Clay Buchholz.

The big righty hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his first four starts for the D-backs and he’s only walked three batters – compared to 21 Ks – in 24 innings of work.

Arizona is a -140 home favorite today against the Pittsburgh Pirates and oddsmakers have the total set at 8.5.

Slumping: Sal Romano, Cincinnati Reds (3-7, 6.23 ERA, -$197)

This Reds starter is having an awful go on the mound these days. He’s surrendered at least four runs in five consecutive starts and he owns an ugly 2.11 WHIP since May 14. The Over is also 3-1-1 in his last five appearances.

Oddsmakers have the Reds as +100 underdogs at Kansas City with the total set at 9.5.
