        • Acuna hits 1st big league homer to lead Braves over Reds 7-4
          April 26, 2018

CINCINNATI (AP) Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies, the two youngest players in the major leagues, both homered and combined for five RBIs to lead Atlanta over the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 Thursday and give the Braves a split of the four-game series.

A day after the 20-year-old Acuna made his big league debut, he homered into the left-field upper deck leading off the second inning, singled in the sixth and hit a tiebreaking double off Wandy Peralta (1-1) in the eighth following Freddie Freeman's third double.

Albies, a 21-year-old who made his debut last August, hit a two-run homer in the fifth for a 4-0 lead and added an RBI double in the ninth.

Sam Freeman (1-1) retired all four batters he faced, and Arodys Vizcaino pitched a one-hit ninth for his second save. Cincinnati dropped to 5-20 for the first time in franchise history.

          YANKEES 4, TWINS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Fernando Rodney (1-2), extending New York's winning streak to six and completing an 8-2 homestand. The Yankees were held hitless through five innings and trailed 3-0 before Aaron Hicks' sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Dellin Betances (1-1) struck out the side on 13 pitches in the ninth for his first win since June 27.

Minnesota completed an 0-7 trip and has lost eight straight to New York, including last year's AL wild-card game.

          PIRATES 1, TIGERS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Corey Dickerson hit the first game-ending home run of his major league career, a disputed one-out drive in the ninth inning off Alex Wilson, (0-1). A fan reached over the 21-foot wall and caught the ball, and the home run was upheld in a video review.

Felipe Vazquez (1-0) escaped a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the ninth when James McCann grounded into a forceout, Victor Martinez popped out and Jose Iglesias bounced into a forceout.

          CARDINALS 4, METS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Dexter Fowler hit a winning single in the 13th off Paul Sewald (0-1), and Tommy Pham had four hits and scored twice.

John Gant (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Memphis before the game, pitched three perfect innings of relief for his second big league win.

St. Louis trailed 2-0 in the seventh and 3-2 in the 10th before Jose Martinez's tying double off Jeurys Familia.

          DIAMONDBACKS 8, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jarrod Dyson, Nick Ahmed and David Peralta homered as Arizona improved to 17-7 and matched the 2008 Diamondbacks for the best 24-game start in franchise history

Dyson hit a two-run homer in the first and Chris Owings added an RBI double off Ben Lively (0-2) for a 3-0 lead.

Matt Koch (1-0) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

RED SOX 5, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer, and Chris Sale (2-1) won for the first time in three starts, allowing three runs and four hits in six innings to improve to 5-1 in eight games at Toronto.

Andrew Benitendi had two hits and an RBI for the Red Sox, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit. The Red Sox are a major league-best 19-5, including 7-1 in one-run games.

Craig Kimbrel got three straight outs for his seventh save in as many chances, finishing a six-hitter.

Marco Estrada (2-2) allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings, and his ERA has risen from 2.77 to 6.00 in his past three starts.

          MARINERS 5, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager hit consecutive doubles in the eighth off Nick Goody (0-1), who relieved with the score 4-4 because regular setup man Andrew Miller is on the disabled list.

Dan Altavilla (2-2) got the last two outs in the seventh. Edwin Diaz pitched around a ninth-inning walk for his major league-leading 11th save.

          RAYS 9, ORIOLES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - C.J. Cron and Wilson Ramos homered as Tampa Bay won its sixth straight game, the Rays' longest since a nine-game run from July 12-26, 2014.

Chris Archer (2-1) allowed four runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Adam Jones had three hits, including his fourth home run of the season for the Orioles, who have lost 11 of 12 and are 1-5 on a nine-game homestand.

          Dylan Bundy (1-3) allowed eight runs - seven earned - and a career-high 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

          CUBS 1, BREWERS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks (2-1) allowed four hits in seven innings to outpitch Chase Anderson (2-2), who allowed Kyle Schwarber's sixth-inning homer, and Chicago stopped Milwaukee's eight-game winning streak.

Carl Edwards Jr. worked the eighth and Brandon Morrow finished the six-hitter for his fifth save.

Kris Bryant missed his third straight game after he was beaned during a victory at Colorado last weekend.

              — Three of the top 22 players taken were defensive guys from Alabama.

              — Braves 7, Reds 4— Ronald Acuna hit his first major league homer.

              — Atlanta Hawks parted ways with coach Mike Budenholzer after five years.

              — Last time there were no WR’s taken in first round of the draft was 2008.

              — Amazon signed a deal to stream NFL games for two years, roughly $130 million.

              Quotes of the Day
“I’m not saying I watch a ton of tennis. But when you watch Wimbledon and see these tennis players and their ability to move side to side, attack the net, backpedal back to the baseline, it is a skill set as far as footwork goes that’s definitely transferable to football.”
              Texans’ coach Bill O’Brien

              Friday’s quiz
Who was commissioner of the NFL before Roger Goodell?

              Thursday’s quiz
Cleveland Browns are 2-41 in their last 43 games; Johnny Manziel and Robert Griffin III were the Browns’ starting QB’s in those two wins.

              Wednesday’s quiz
Didi Gregorius played for the Reds, Diamondbacks before coming to New York.

              *************************

Friday’s Den: Running diary of first two hours of NFL Draft

8:16: Cleveland Browns take Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield with the #1 pick in the draft; time will tell on all these picks, but my quick analysis is this— when we last watched actual college football games, no one had Mayfield in the top 10 picks. No one.

Now all of a sudden, he is the #1 pick. The team that took Johnny Manziel took a guy who has a lot of similarities to Manziel.

Cleveland is 2-41 in its last 43 games; they traded for Buffalo’s QB Tyrod Taylor this winter. How long before Mayfield gets to play for the Browns?

8:21: Giants take Sequon Barkley and my godson, a huge Giants fan, isn’t happy— he wanted Big Blue to take Sam Darnold or trade out of the pick.

Have to think the Giants could’ve gotten a boatload of picks from Buffalo to move out of this spot, but they didn’t.

Is it possible that Eli Manning is the real GM of the Giants? They fired Ben McAdoo LY when he benched Eli for a game, after Eli had gotten Tom Coughlin fired the year before. Manning is a 37-year old QB who needs a better offensive line than he currently has.

8:29: Jets and Giants didn’t use up much time; Jets grab QB Sam Darnold from USC.

NFL Network has Deion Sanders doing player interviews; I can’t stand him, so it is off to ESPN, where they just had a package about how Darnold’s parents, grandfather and sister all played college sports. I’m sure the Jets drafted Darnold because his sister played volleyball at Rhode Island.

Cleveland has had 28 different starting QB’s since 1999; that not good.

8:36: With the second pick of the night, Cleveland takes Denzel Ward, a DB from Ohio State which means that QB’s Allen/Rosen are now sliding down the draft board, since Denver and the Colts don’t need a quarterback, and they have the next two picks.

8:43: Broncos have to be happier than hell to get Bradley Chubb, the DE from NC State. No way did they think he would be available with the 5th pick.

8:47: Colts take offensive lineman Quentin Nelson from Notre Dame; Andrew Luck will be a happy guy, but not often a guard is the #6 player in the draft.

8:53: Finally, the Bills make a trade- they move up to the #7 pick. They take Josh Allen; he might be only kid in country where playing for Buffalo is a weather upgrade.

Tampa Bay got two second round picks to drop down to #12; good haul for them.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock thinks Allen is a project; right now, AJ McCarron is the Buffalo QB, so the project will hit the field sooner than later.

Allen and Carson Wentz had the same college coach; Craig Bohl, who won multiple I-AA national titles at North Dakota State. That had to help Allen here.

9:01: Chicago Bears take Roquan Smith, a LB from Georgia; Bears’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio got a hole-in-one playing golf Thursday, so that plus drafting Smith makes it a big day for Fangio.

49ers, Raiders are next on the clock and don’t need a QB; Josh Rosen can’t be having fun right now.

9:04: 49ers take Notre Dame OT Mike McGlinchey; Fighting Irish had two offensive linemen taken in top nine picks- their OL coach has bolted and now works for the Bears, who didn’t take an offensive lineman.

9:09: Arizona trades with Oakland to move up to #10; Carson Palmer retired and Sam Bradford is always hurt, so this has to be a quarterback, doesn’t it?

Josh Rosen is an Arizona Cardinal, taken 10th; he is the 4th QB taken in the draft. Last time five QB’s were taken in the first round was 1999. It is good to play QB in a dome; eight home games indoors, plus at least two road games in California every year.

Of course, the term “chip on his shoulder” got tossed around, since Rosen slipped out of the top five.

9:18: Dolphins take S Minkah Fitzpatrick, as Nick Saban contributes a player to the team he used to coach.

This is the 10th year in a row Alabama had a player taken in the first round of the draft.

9:24: Tampa Bay takes Vita Vea, a defensive tackle from Washington. Bucs traded for Jason Pierre-Paul and drafted this guy, so they’re intent on improving their defense.

Couple of guys on TV said Via has to work to control his weight so he’ll be more durable and have better stamina.

9:31: Washington Redskins aren’t popular in Dallas, but they took Da’Ron Payne, a DT from Alabama. Having two of the top 13 players selected has to help your recruiting, right?

Imagine how different college football would’ve been for the last decade if Nick Saban had won while coaching the Dolphins and stayed there?

9:40: Saints traded next year’s #1 pick to move up from #27 to #14; they took DE Marcus Davenport from UTSA, after guys from NFL Network went on for five minutes about how great Lamar Jackson would be playing for the Saints. Whoops.

They must really love Davenport, to trade a #1 pick to the Packers to move up. Saints DL coach Ryan Nielsen and UTSA coach Frank Wilson worked together at Ole Miss, so he must know.

Green Bay now has two #1 picks next season.

9:45: Oakland takes T Colton Miller, then Bills traded up to #16 to take Tremaine Edmunds a LB from Virginia Tech.

9:56: Chargers get a steal with S Derwin James from Florida State; he was hurt a couple years ago when Showtime did their reality show on FSU football. Good kid; he’ll help them.

                      • LEADING OFF: Bogaerts expected back by Boston; Miller to DL
                        April 26, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

                        BOGAERTS IS BACK

Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts was expected to return to the Red Sox lineup on Friday for a homestand opener against Tampa Bay. Bogarts broke the talus bone in his left ankle on April 8 while sliding into the Rays dugout to grab an errant ball. He went 2 for 3 with a home run and a double while playing six innings at shortstop Tuesday night in a rehab appearance Triple-A Pawtucket.

                        MILLER OUT

Cleveland reliever Andrew Miller has been placed on the 10-day disabled list because of his strained left hamstring but hopes it's a very short road back.

Miller grabbed the back of his leg after throwing a pitch to the Chicago Cubs' Anthony Rizzo in the seventh inning Wednesday night and was removed from the game. Miller struck out 17 and walked four over 10 scoreless innings in 11 games this year.

                        BRYANT STILL OUT

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was out of the starting lineup for the third straight game after he was beaned during a victory at Colorado last weekend.

Bryant visited with a team doctor on Thursday, and the Cubs said Bryant hasn't been diagnosed with a concussion.

''I don't anticipate anything awful or bad. We're just waiting for everybody to be on board and once we do that he'll be back out there playing,'' manager Joe Maddon said.

The 26-year-old Bryant is batting .319 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 19 games.

                        SERIES STREAK

Arizona, the first NL team to win its first eight series since the 1977 Los Angeles Dodgers, goes to Washington for three games against the Nationals this week. Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Godley (3-1, 3.09 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday's opener, with Stephen Strasburg (2-2, 2.97) opening for the Nationals.

                        OLD FOES

The Dodgers start a season-long 11-game, 10-day trip at San Francisco on Friday and send Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-0, 1.99) to the mound. Giants starter Derek Holland (0-3, 4.98) is winless in two career starts against Los Angeles.

                          April 26, 2018

Hottest team: Brewers (8-1 last nine)

Milwaukee had its eight-game winning streak snapped in Thursday’s 1-0 defeat at Chicago to fall to 1-4 this season against the Cubs. However, the Brewers have still shined of late by allowing two runs or less in seven of the last nine contests, while owning a solid 8-4 record away from Miller Park this season.

The Brewers have a quick turnaround on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field as southpaw Brent Suter heads to the mound. Suter was knocked around by the Cubs at home on April 5 in an 8-0 setback as he allowed five runs in five innings of work. However, the Brewers have won seven of eight Game 2’s this season, while the Cubs have compiled an 0-4 record after winning a series opener.

Coldest team: Royals (1-9 last 10)

It’s amazing to think Kansas City once held a solid home-field advantage as the Royals fell to 1-10 at Kauffman Stadium following Thursday’s home loss to Chicago. The Royals have lost three times to the White Sox at home, while the only home victory for Kansas City this season came against Seattle back on April 9.

Kansas City tries to break through against Chicago, sending out left-hander Danny Duffy to the mound. Duffy, a 12-game winner two seasons ago, is winless in 2018, while the Royals have put together an 0-5 record with the southpaw on the hill this season. When Duffy faced the White Sox on opening day, he allowed five earned runs in four innings, including yielding three home runs in a 14-7 loss.

Hottest pitcher: Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dodgers (3-0, 1.99 ERA)

Los Angeles squares off with San Francisco for its third series in less than a month. The two NL West rivals have split six games so far as the Dodgers try to get on track after losing their final two games as heavy favorites to the Marlins. Ryu allowed three earned runs in his first start of the season at Arizona, but has yielded two earned runs in his last three outings combined. The Dodgers blanked the Nationals behind Ryu’s seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball last Saturday, while striking out eight.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Tillman, Orioles (0-4, 9.87 ERA)

Tillman has been racked so far in four starts, giving up at least seven hits and four earned runs in each of his outings this season. To be fair, Tillman has faced the Astros, Yankees, Red Sox, and Indians so far, all playoff teams in 2017. Baltimore owns a dreadful 3-8 record at Camden Yards this season, while Tillman allowed seven runs in two innings of a 7-5 home defeat to Detroit last August, as the Orioles welcome in the Tigers for a weekend series.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (6-1 last seven)

Minnesota returns to Target Field for the first time in two weeks following stops in Puerto Rico (to face Cleveland), Tampa Bay, and New York. The Twins try to snap a seven-game skid after blowing a 3-0 lead in Thursday’s 4-3 walk-off loss to the Yankees. Minnesota’s pitching actually stepped up in the series finale against New York by allowing one run in the first eight innings, as the Twins had given up seven runs or more in each of the previous six contests. The Twins welcome in the Reds for an interleague set as Cincinnati has cashed the OVER in four the last five games.

Biggest UNDER run: Red Sox (4-1 last five)

Boston saw its four-game UNDER streak come to an end in Thursday’s 5-4 victory at Toronto, as the total closed at 8. The Red Sox have allowed four runs or fewer in 13 straight games, as Boston hosts Tampa Bay this weekend. The Rays are on fire by winning six straight contests, but they have lost six of seven meetings with the Red Sox. Drew Pomeranz makes his second start of the season for Boston, as the southpaw lasted less than four innings at Oakland last Friday in a 7-3 win. However, all three starts by Pomeranz against the Rays last season finished OVER the total.

Matchup to watch: Athletics vs. Astros

The AL West is turning into a competitive race, at least early on with the World Champion Astros in front at 17-9. For the exception of the struggling Rangers, the Angels, Mariners, and Athletics are all hanging around above the .500 mark.

Although Oakland lost on Wednesday at Texas, the A’s have rolled off wins in eight of their last 10 games, including taking two of three from the Red Sox last weekend at home. Sean Manaea tossed his first career no-hitter as the Athletics’ left-hander struck out 10 batters and walked two in a 3-0 victory over Boston as a +150 underdog. Manaea has yielded one earned run or less in four of five starts this season, but the A’s put together a 1-3 record in his four outings against the Astros last season.

The Astros avoided a sweep by the Angels in Wednesday’s 5-2 victory behind Justin Verlander’s seven strong innings. Houston turns to its southpaw ace in Dallas Keuchel on Friday as the 2015 Cy Young winner is fresh off his first win of the season in a 10-1 blasting of the White Sox last Saturday. Keuchel has struck out six batters in each of his last three starts, but had receiving a total of five runs of support in his first three outings prior to the rout of Chicago.

                          Betcha didn’t know:
Only one team in the league has yet to win a series opener this season. That squad is the Texas Rangers, who owns a dreadful 0-8 mark in Game 1’s, including six of those losses by three runs or more. The Rangers travel to Toronto to face the Blue Jays as Texas also has another trend going against them on Friday. Texas beat Oakland on Wednesday, as the Rangers have compiled a 1-7 record off a victory this season, although that win came as a +280 underdog at Houston on April 15.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-250) vs. Mariners

Biggest public underdog: Athletics (+145) at Astros

Biggest line move: Marlins (+130 to +115) vs. Rockies

                            • Manaea follows no-hitter with another win
                              April 28, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Sean Manaea followed up his no-hitter with seven solid innings, three Athletics homered and Oakland beat the Houston Astros 8-1 on Friday night for its fifth win in six games.

Manaea (4-2) no-hit Boston last Saturday and didn't allow a hit Friday until the fourth inning. He gave up one unearned run and four hits.

Dallas Keuchel (1-4) retired his first 13 batters before Matt Chapman's one-out homer in the fifth. Chad Pinder added a two-run homer in the sixth off Keuchel, who allowed a season-high six runs and seven hits in seven innings.

                              INDIANS 6, MARINERS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber (4-1) struck out 10 in 8 2/3 innings and Cleveland hit hit five solo home runs, including three in the first inning.

Kluber left with a 6-2 lead after Kyle Seager's two-out single in the ninth, the Mariners' fourth hit. Cody Allen gave up Mitch Haniger's single and Mike Zunino's three-run homer, then retired Ben Gamel on a lineout to shortstop Francisco Lindor.

Lindor, Michael Brantley and Edwin Encarnacion homered in the first, and Yonder Alonso and Yan Gomes hit consecutive drives in the sixth for a 6-0 lead against Erasmo Ramirez (0-2).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Matt Davidson homered twice, including a tiebreaking, two-run drive in the 11th off Tim Hill (0-1), setting a record for home runs by a visiting player at Kauffman Stadium in one season. Davidson has seven home runs in 15 at-bats over four games at Kansas City - one more home run than the Royals have hit in 12 home games this season.

Kansas City is a big league-worst 1-11 at home. Four of Chicago's seven wins this season have been at Kauffman Stadium.

Gregory Infante (1-1) won, and Joakim Soria got his fourth save.
