MLB Preview - Los Angeles Dodgers at Oakland Athletics

Every few years it seems the Oakland Athletics make a playoff push despite being a small market team, and this is another one of those years. The A’s have vaulted into the second wild card spot and are hoping to hold off the Mariners to keep it down the stretch. Oakland has a big game coming up this week against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are in a playoff battle of their own over in the National League.

The Dodgers are the favorites to win the N.L. West but the Diamondbacks and Rockies are matching them blow for blow. Los Angeles could use a win in this one just as much as the A’s.

The Dodgers have the more talented team, especially after adding on at the trading deadline, but must hit the road so it figures to be a competitive contest in MLB wagering.

This MLB baseball game will be held at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum in Oakland, California at 10:05 p.m ET on Tuesday, August 7th, 2018.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

    Odds Analysis

The Dodgers enter this matchup with a record of 62-51, which is barely ahead of the D-Backs and Rockies in the division. The two teams that don’t win the N.L. West will also have a shot at the wild card spots, so the Dodgers have multiple ways to qualify for the postseason but would love to enter as the division winner.

The Athletics are 67-46 on the season. They have won six consecutive games to leapfrog Seattle for the second wild card spot and seem like the better team, so they have good odds of holding on. Oakland is 32-22 at home this season but the Dodgers have also been good on the road, so all signs are pointing to a good matchup in MLB betting.

    Probable Pitchers

The Dodgers are expected to send veteran left-hander Rich Hill to the mound. He is 4-4 on the season with a 3.63 ERA. Hill is injury-prone but is generally effective when healthy. He has been great lately, allowing only two runs combined in his past three starts. The A’s have been hot but are running into a pitcher that has found just as much success.

Oakland will counter with Sean Manaea. He is 10-7 on the year with a 3.38 ERA and a fantastic 1.01 WHIP. Manaea gave up only one run in six innings last time out in a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. He has been consistent all season and has the ability to shut down a Dodgers offense that has a lot of talent.

    Player To Watch

Brian Dozier -- The Dodgers added the former Twins second baseman to the fold. He is a power hitter, which is rare at the position, and could be an impact player down the stretch. Los Angeles previously traded for Manny Machado, and these two deals have really fortified an offense which lost Corey Seager early in the year.

The Dodgers are the favorites to win their division in large part because of the deals they made before the trading deadline to improve the roster.

    Free MLB ATS Picks

The Athletics are a small-market, scrappy bunch but there is no questioning their overall body of work. They have one of their best pitchers on the hill and a lot of momentum. The Dodgers are a worthy for but look for Oakland to keep it rolling with a victory at home in MLB betting.

MLB ATS Pick: Athletics 3, Dodgers 2

      • Braves split doubleheader with Nationals
        August 7, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Bartolo Colon became the top-winning pitcher born in Latin America, punctuating his 246th career victory with a nifty snag as the Texas Rangers roughed up Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners 11-4 on Tuesday night.

The 45-year-old Colon, from the Dominican Republic, made his sixth start since earning his 245th win on June 30 that matched the mark held by Dennis Martinez from Nicaragua.

Colon (6-10) gave up four runs in seven innings. The portly and popular right-hander struck out one and walked none.

Adrian Beltre, Jurickson Profar and Rougned Odor homered off Hernandez (8-10), who allowed a career-high 11 runs - seven earned - in six innings.

        PIRATES 10, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Jameson Taillon beat Chad Bettis in a matchup of pitchers who battled testicular cancer last year, and the Pirates hit three homers.

Taillon (9-8) allowed 10 hits in his second complete game of the season. The 26-year-old right-hander struck out three and walked one, helping Pittsburgh stop a three-game slide.

Starling Marte hit a solo drive in the first and Jordy Mercer connected for a three-run shot against Bettis (5-2) with two out in the fourth. Josh Harrison capped Pittsburgh's five-run fifth with a two-run homer off Jake McGee.

Bettis allowed nine runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in his first start after missing five weeks with a blister on his right middle finger.

        NATIONALS 8, BRAVES 3, GAME 1

        BRAVES 3, NATIONALS 1, GAME 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ender Inciarte snapped a ninth-inning tie with a two-run triple, helping Atlanta to a doubleheader split.

In the opener, Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman hit consecutive homers to spark a four-run fourth inning that carried Washington to the victory.

Seeking to blunt the momentum of the surging Nationals, Atlanta shook off a strong pitching performance by Max Scherzer before striking against the Washington bullpen in the second game.

Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis singled off Kelvin Herrera (1-2) before Inciarte hit a liner down the first-base line.

Jesse Biddle (3-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings and A.J. Minter got three outs for his ninth save.

In the first game, Zimmerman and Trea Turner had three hits apiece and Harper added two hits and two RBIs. Jefry Rodriguez (1-1) allowed one run in five innings in his first major victory.

Kolby Allard (1-1) got the loss in relief of Max Fried, who was struck in the lower back by a line drive in the second inning and removed with a left groin strain. Allard allowed four runs in two innings.

RED SOX 10, BLUE JAYS 7, 10 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer during Boston's five-run 10th inning, and the Red Sox earned their fifth straight win.

Moreland's one-out shot off Ken Giles (0-3) followed a triple by Mookie Betts and a walk by Andrew Benintendi. Jackie Bradley Jr. added a two-run homer later in the inning.

Boston closer Craig Kimbrel (3-1) gave up a solo homer to Justin Smoak with one out in the ninth inning, tying it at 5. It was Kimbrel's second blown save in four outings.

        CARDINALS 3, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Matt Carpenter hit his 30th homer for St. Louis, a tiebreaking drive in the eighth inning.

Carpenter connected for the fourth time in five games and increased his career high for home runs. He also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 26 games, the longest active string in the majors.

Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer in the seventh for the Cardinals, who have won eight of 12. Miles Mikolas (12-3) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits.

Derek Dietrich had three hits for the Marlins, who have lost seven of eight. Elieser Hernandez (2-6) got the loss.

        CUBS 5, ROYALS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Mike Montgomery pitched five-hit ball into the seventh inning and David Bote drove in a career-high three runs, leading the Cubs to the win.

Montgomery (4-4) picked up his first win since June 29. He is 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in four appearances against the Royals.

Kansas City rookie Brad Keller (4-5) was removed after six innings, allowing four runs and seven hits.

The Royals have lost six straight and are 14-43 since May 30.

        PADRES 11, BREWERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Manuel Margot homered, tripled, singled and drove in five runs, powering San Diego to the victory.

Franmil Reyes added three RBIs for the Padres. Matt Strahm (3-3) got one out for the win.

Jesus Aguilar and Mike Moustakas staked Milwaukee to a 4-0 first-inning lead with a pair of two-run homers - Aguilar's team-best 27th and Moustakas' 22nd and second as a Brewer.

All-Star Josh Hader (4-1) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in 1 1/3 innings.

        ASTROS 2, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Tyler White hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, helping Houston put together another late rally.

The win followed the Astros' 3-1 victory Monday night in which Marwin Gonzalez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth.

This time, the AL West leaders again trailed 1-0 when Gonzalez doubled and White hit a high, arching shot to left field off Ray Black (1-1).

The Astros have won six of seven and the Giants have lost four of five.

Joe Smith (4-1) got the win, and Hector Rondon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save.

        RAYS 4, ORIOLES 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Willy Adames hit a solo homer with two out in the ninth inning, lifting Tampa Bay to the victory.

Adames' fifth home run of the season came off Miguel Castro (2-6).

Sergio Romo (2-2) got the win after retiring two batters in the ninth, helping Tampa Bay break a three-game losing streak.

Tim Beckham and Trey Mancini homered for Baltimore, and Alex Cobb pitched seven strong innings.

        REDS 6, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Cincinnati's Sal Romano got the win in his New York homecoming, pitching into the seventh inning in a game delayed by rain for 1 hour, 40 minutes in the first.

Romano (7-9) was born in Syosset on nearby Long Island and grew up in Southington, Connecticut. He allowed a run in six-plus innings, helping the Reds stop a three-game skid.

Phillip Ervin hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati and finished with three RBIs.

Mets starter Jason Vargas (2-8) recorded just one out and was charged with three runs and three hits.

            Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

            13) Its good if you learn something new every day; was reading an article today about a card game called booray, a cross between spades and hearts that has its roots in Louisiana and is very popular amongst NBA players on airplanes and in hotels.

Professional athletes are competitive by nature, whether they’re playing ball or cards or doing whatever it is that they do. They also have a lot of money.

            12) Go to actionnetwork.com for an interesting article about how in 2009, a booray game between two players on the Washington Wizards got out of hand and I’m understating that. Go read the article; poor Flip Saunders, who was coaching the Wizards at the time.

            11) I’m watching Hard Knocks on HBO the other night, from last year’s show featuring the Tampa Bay Bucs, and the narrator says this line:

“Quite simply, he’s the most important player on the team.”

He was talking about QB Jameis Winston, and if you’re a Bucs’ fan, it has to make you queasy, because Winston is suspended for the first three games this season, for off-field issues.

Buccaneers opened at +7.5 in their season opener at New Orleans; game has been bet up to 9.5, with Ryan Fitzpatrick the likely Tampa Bay starter at QB.

            10) The great Tony Gwynn got his 2,000th hit on August 6, 1993 and he got his 3,000th hit on an August 6, 1999. Gwynn’s mother’s birthday was August 6th.

            9) 76ers’ rookie Zhaire Smith broke his foot this week; what is it with Sixers rookies and foot injuries?

            8) Sounds like when Robinson Cano returns to the Seattle Mariners next week, it’ll be as a first baseman. He is playing first base in his AAA; there are thoughts he could play 3B, too, but since he can’t play in the postseason, Dee Gordon will likely stay at second for Seattle.

            7) Last week, the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces needed nearly 26 hours to travel to Washington from Las Vegas after flight delays and cancellations Friday. By the time the team reached its hotel, it was 3:45 p.m. — about four hours before the scheduled tip.

Aces players decided not to play because of concerns about their health and safety after 26 hours of travel; the WNBA ruled Tuesday that the Aces have to forfeit that game.

            6) Sounds like Lakers-Warriors will be on Christmas Day; who ever would’ve guessed?

            5) Bronx Bombers are still on the hook for $47M over the next three years to Jacoby Ellsbury, the oft-injured outfielder who had hip surgery in NYC this week.

            4) Get well soon to Red Sox TV announcer Jerry Remy, who has battled cancer multiple times in the last decade and now has to do it again. We wish him well.

            3) RIP to hockey great Stan Mikita, 78 who passed away this week. Mikita played for 22 years with the Chicago Blackhawks, is their all-time leading scorer.

One of my first memories as a young Bruins fan was rooting against the Blackhawks, who had Mikita and Bobby Hull as their best players. RIP, sir.

            2) An Irish guy living in Vancouver went streaking during the 9th inning of the Toronto-Mariners game in Seattle Saturday night, all for an $80 bet. Now the guy may get deported back to Ireland, because of his subsequent arrest. Brilliant!!!

            1) Which reminds me that when the Blue Jays visit Seattle every year, a ton of Toronto fans invade Safeco Field; the Blue Jays are Canada’s team, after all, and Seattle is close to Canada.

            • LEADING OFF: Cards' Carpenter hot, Fiers debuts for A's
              August 7, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

              MATTY WOODWORK

Matt Carpenter has four homers in five games heading into St. Louis' series finale against Miami. Carpenter hit his 30th home run in a 3-2 win Monday, becoming the first left-handed Cardinal to hit 30 home runs since Jim Edmonds hit 42 in 2004, according to ESPN Stats & Info. ''I couldn't imagine the stretch I'm putting together,'' Carpenter said. ''I would have never guessed that. It's uncharted territory for me.''

              FIRED UP

Mike Fiers makes his first start since the Athletics acquired him Detroit earlier this week. The right-hander will pitch at the Coliseum against a tough opponent in Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fiers is 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA this season and 2-2 with a 1.96 ERA over his last seven starts.

''I wasn't really planning on going anywhere and just focused on what I had to do there. The time came and I was traded and now I'm here trying to do my job every fifth day,'' he said.

              BOSTON BAIL OUT

The Red Sox go for their sixth straight win a night after overcoming a blown save from closer Craig Kimbrel. The Blue Jays rallied in the ninth, getting a solo homer from Justin Smoak off Kimbrel to force extra innings, only to have Ken Giles allow a three-run homer to Mitch Moreland and a two-run shot to Jackie Bradley Jr. in the 10th. It was the second blown save in four appearances for Kimbrel, though he struck out the other three batters he faced Monday.

Boston, which has the best record in the majors, turns to left-hander Brian Johnson (2-3, 3.74) to keep the streak going against Toronto's Mike Hauschild (1-0, 0.00).

              SCORING FOR YO

The last-place Rangers score a lot of runs when Yovani Gallardo is on the mound. Gallardo, 6-1 since rejoining Texas in mid-June for the first time since 2015, starts the series finale against Seattle. While Gallardo has a 4.76 ERA in seven starts since a no-decision in his season debut for the Rangers, they have averaged an MLB-best 11.57 runs per nine innings with the right-hander on the mound. No AL pitcher has more wins in that span.

Toronto Over 12-3 past 15 games overall Washington Under 7-3 past 10 games

                        D.C. Under

The Washington Nationals will host the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, as LHP Tommy Milone will battle RHP Mike Foltznewicz in the third of a four-game set. The Braves have posted four consecutive under results when facing a southpaw starter, while the under is 4-1 in their past five against winning sides and 8-3 in their past 11 games overall. While that's very encouraging for under players, the over has been 21-9 in their past 30 games away from SunTrust Park and 5-2-1 in Foltynewicz's past eight assignments. However, the under is 8-3-3 in Folty's past 14 outings against National League East clubs, including 4-1-1 across his past six versus the Nats. The under is also 8-3-1 in the past 12 meetings overall between these division rivals.

For the Nationals, the under has connected in four of their past five, including 4-1 in the past five at Nationals Park. The under is also an impressive 39-18 across their past 57 against right-handed starting pitchers and 11-5 in their past 16 in Game 3 of a series. In addition, the under is 5-1 in their past six outings on Wednesday, for whatever that's worth. It's more worth noting rather than putting much stock into, as it's a rather arbitrary trend. Under bettors might feel more comfortable knowing Greg Gibson will be the home-plate umpire. The under is 7-1-1 in Gibson's past nine behind the plate in Atlanta games, while going 3-1-1 in his past five overall behind the dish. Of course, the over is also 5-1 in Gibson's past six for the Nationals behind home plate, so make of that what you will.

                        Looking Ahead

                        Wednesday, Aug. 8

The Orioles and Rays will battle at Tropicana Field, and the over has been the rule for the O's lately. The over is 8-2 in their past 10 games overall while going 5-1 in the past six inside the division. In addition, the over is 5-0 in their past five against a team with a winning record, and 8-1 in their past nine vs. RHP. The over is also 4-0 in the past four starts by Andrew Cashner, although the under has connected in five of his past seven on the road. The under is also an impressive 18-5 in Baltimore's past 23 appearances on artificial surfaces. The under has hit in four of the past five at home for the Rays, while going 5-1 in Ryne Stanek's past six against divisional foes. The under is also 7-1-1 in Stanek's past nine showings at home. In addition, the under is 7-1 in the past eight meetings in St. Petersburg.

The Twins and Indians have had one over and one under in the first two games of their current series. Tuesday's contest was affected by a lengthy weather delay, so perhaps that threw off the timing of the bats. The over is still 4-1 in Minnesota's past five overall, and 4-1 in their past five inside the division. The over is also 4-1 in Jake Odorizzi's past five assignments. For the Tribe, the under is 6-2 in their past eight overall, and 4-1 in their past five against Central clubs. However, the over is 4-0-2 in the past six at home for Mike Clevinger, and 3-0-1 in his past four against teams with a losing overall mark.

It's a battle of left-handers in Oakland, as LHP Clayton Kershaw takes the bump for the Dodgers against LHP Brett Anderson for the A's. The under is 4-0 in L.A.'s past four on the road, and 9-2 across their past 11 interleague battles. The under is also 13-4-1 in their past 18 on the road vs. LHP. In addition, the under is 8-3 in their past 11 overall, and 5-2 in Kershaw's past seven away from home. For the A's, it's been all under all the time. The under is 4-0 in their past four, 5-0 in their past five vs. LHP and 6-1-1 in their past eight interleague home battles. The under is also 4-0 in Anderson's past four against teams with a winning overall record.

                        Betting On The Wind
There are no issues as far as the wind is concerned on Hump Day, although Cleveland will be the breeziest with a 10 mph wind blowing from left to right.

                        Thursday, Aug. 9

In Thursday's afternoon battle, the Twins and Indians battle in Cleveland. The under is 5-1 in Jose Berrios' past six starts on the road, and 9-4-2 in his past 15 away from home against a team with a winning overall mark. The over is actually 8-3-1 in Corey Kluber's past 12 starts at home, however, and 11-3-1 in his past 15 overall. The over is also 6-2 in Klubot's past eight at Progressive Field against the Twins.

Red Sox RHP Rick Porcello takes on Blue Jays rookie LHP Ryan Borucki. The over is 6-2 in Porcello's past eight on the road, while going 11-4-1 in his past 16 starts overall. The over is also 4-1 in Boston's past five against left-handed starting pitching, and 7-3 in their past 10 away from the Fens against teams with a losing overall record. The over has hit in 12 of the past 17 when Porcello is working on five days of rest, too. For the Jays, the over is 10-2 in the past 12 games overall heading into play Wednesday, while going 4-1 in their past five overall. The over is also 6-1 in the past seven against right-handed starting pitchers.

                        Friday, Aug. 10

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler takes the ball for the series opener in Miami. Wheeler enters the game with a 13-inning scoreless streak intact, and the 'under' is 2-0 in the past two outings as you would imagine. The Marlins will counter with RHP Jose Urena, and the over is 3-1 in his past four outings overall. However, the under is 4-2 across his past six at Marlins Park. The under cashed in Urena's only meeting against the Mets back on April 9, a 4-2 victory by New York in Miami.

Phillies RHP Zach Eflin will work against the Padres at Petco Park on Friday night. He has allowed three or fewer runs in nine of his past 10 starts, and the under is 7-3 during that span. In addition, the under is 4-1 over his past five outings on the road. The under will be tested, however, as Padres rookie LHP Joey Lucchesi is on the hill for the home side. He is 3-4 with a 4.21 ERA in 11 home assignments, allowing 11 of his 14 homers with a .255 opponent batting average. Lucchesi also has a 5.28 ERA in three outings since the All-Star break.

                          August 8, 2018

Hottest team: Red Sox (9-1 last 10)

Boston picked up its 80th (yes, 80th) victory of the season in Tuesday’s 10-7 extra-innings triumph at Toronto after erasing a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning. The Red Sox improved to 11-3 this season against the Blue Jays, while extending its winning streak to five after their weekend sweep of the rival Yankees. Boston also compiled its fifth straight road series opening win, but the Sox have lost their last two away Game 2’s of a series at Detroit and Baltimore, while laying at least -145 in each defeat.

The Red Sox opened as a -140 favorite in tonight’s affair at Toronto as southpaw Brian Johnson heads to the hill. Johnson picked up his second win of the season as he struck out 11 in a 15-7 victory over the Yankees last Thursday. The left-hander received a no-decision the last time he faced the Blue Jays at Fenway Park on July 15 in a 5-2 win as he lasted one out shy of five innings to be eligible for the victory.

Coldest team: Tigers (3-7 last 10)

Detroit dropped its 40th road game of the season in Tuesday’s 11-5 setback to the Angels, while falling to 0-5 on its current California swing. The good news is the offense scored more runs last night than it did in its previous four losses combined, including two runs in the opening frame. However, the Angels rebounded by posting a seven-spot in the bottom of the first to cruise to the six-run win. Detroit owns a 3-4 record this season when looking to avoid the sweep in a road series of three games or more, as two of those wins came at Boston and Houston.

The Tigers send out left-hander Blaine Hardy to try and stop the bleeding this afternoon as he is coming off his best start of the season at Oakland. Hardy yielded one hit and struck out six in seven scoreless innings, but the A’s came up with the only run of the game in the 13th inning of a 1-0 victory last Friday.

Hottest pitcher: Jose Quintana, Cubs (10-7, 4.12 ERA)

The southpaw takes the mound tonight looking to finish off a three-game sweep of the hapless Royals. The Cubs have won five of Quintana’s last six starts, including a 5-4 victory in his past outing against the Padres last Friday in which he allowed four hits and one earned run in six innings. In two starts against the Royals last season as a member of the White Sox, Quintana beat Kansas City twice, while striking out 17 batters and yielding two runs in 14 innings.

Coldest pitcher: Luis Severino, Yankees (14-5, 3.08 ERA)

At the All-Star break, Severino was a prime candidate to capture the AL Cy Young award at 14-2 and an ERA below 3.00. Three starts later, the Yankees’ right-hander can’t pick up a victory to save himself as he owns an 0-3 mark and a bloated ERA of 9.60. Severino has allowed 17 runs in this span, while not lasting past the sixth inning in any start. To make matters worse, two of the losses came as a favorite of -270 against the Rays and -400 against the Royals, as Severino opened as a -250 favorite tonight at Chicago.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (8-3-1 last 11)

Who woke up San Diego’s offense the last few days? The usually dormant Padres’ lineup scored 10 runs in Sunday’s victory over the Cubs, then topped that by posting 11 runs in Tuesday’s comeback triumph at Milwaukee. Granted, this OVER run has also been aided by mediocre pitching by the Padres, who have given up five runs or more in four straight contests. However, San Diego has scored 35 runs in the first five games of its road trip as rookie Brett Kennedy makes his Major League debut tonight at Miller Park opposite Milwaukee veteran Jhoulys Chacin.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (9-1 last 10)

Philadelphia closes out its series with Arizona this afternoon at Chase Field following Tuesday’s 5-2 victory. This game barely finished UNDER the total of 7 ½, but UNDER bettors were on the right side all along as Philadelphia led 1-0 heading into the eighth inning before the Phillies busted out for four runs. Philadelphia’s pitching staff continues to impress by allowing three runs or fewer in eight consecutive games, as Vince Velasquez looks to keep that streak going. Velasquez has allowed two runs in his last four starts, while the Phillies are 6-0 to the UNDER in his past six starts.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Athletics

When you think of these two Golden State squads hooking up, the first image is always Dennis Eckersley serving up a home run to gimpy Kirk Gibson in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, eventually won by the Dodgers. Fast-forward 20 years and the Dodgers captured the opener of their mini two-game interleague set with the Athletics, 4-2 on Tuesday night behind three early runs off Oakland’s Sean Manaea.

The A’s had their six-game winning streak snapped following a pair of sweeps against below .500 teams in the Blue Jays and Tigers. Oakland will have step up its game in the series finale tonight against Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers own a 5-1 record in Kershaw’s last six outings, including a 21-5 drubbing of the Brewers his last time out. Kershaw has delivered six consecutive quality starts, while the Dodgers are 9-0 in his past nine interleague outings dating back to 2015.

Mike Fiers makes his Oakland debut after getting traded from Detroit last week. Fiers compiled a 7-6 record to go along with a 3.48 ERA with the Tigers this season, while giving up one earned run or less in five of his final seven starts. The right-hander performed well as a home underdog this season as Detroit won seven of his 10 starts at plus-money, including victories over Boston, Cleveland (twice), and New York.

Betcha didn’t know: The Braves and Nationals continue their chase of the Phillies for the top spot in the NL East race. Atlanta and Washington split a double-header on Tuesday as the two division rivals hook up again tonight in D.C. Mike Foltynewicz takes the mound for Atlanta as the Braves have won each of his two home starts against Washington this season, but Atlanta is 0-2 in his two starts at Nationals Park.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-265) at White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Braves (+105) at Nationals

Biggest line move: Diamondbacks (-145 to -155) vs. Phillies

MLB Preview - Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals

                            By Kyle Markus

The Washington Nationals have picked up the pace lately, finally resembling the team everyone expected to cruise to the National League East title. They are currently in third place and five games out so they have some work to do to make the playoffs. The Atlanta Braves sit in second place ahead of them and the teams will face off in a monumental series this week.

Washington has been very inconsistent but has the talent to zoom past the Braves and Phillies for the top spot if it excels down the stretch. Atlanta can put a big wrench into those plans by playing well in this one.

The Nationals have the inferior record but get this game at home and figure to be the favorites in MLB gambling.

This MLB baseball game will be held at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. at 7:00 p.m ET on Wednesday, August 8th. The contest will be nationally televised on ESPN.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                            Odds Analysis

The Braves come into this matchup with a record of 60-49. They are currently in the second wild card spot but it is a tight race. They are close to the Phillies for the division lead as well so there are multiple avenues for the Braves to either make or miss the playoffs.

The Nationals are 58-54 on the year as eight wins in their past 11 games has gotten them back in the race. Washington has a plus-71 run-differential so clearly the team is capable of making a run but has to prove its worth in contests like these. The Nationals are 29-26 at home this year.

                            Probable Pitchers

The Braves are scheduled to send Mike Foltynewicz to the mound for this one. The All-Star pitcher has a 3.04 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. He is having a breakout season but finished July on a down note -- allowing 18 runs and 28 hits in his five showings last month. Foltynewicz pitched well last time out, giving up two runs and five hits in six innings of work in a 4-2 win over Mets.

The Nationals are expected to send veteran lefty Tommy Milone to the hill to oppose Foltynewicz. The 31-year-old only has two starts after his latest call-up in late July. He has an ERA of 3.00 in those two showings, allowing a combined four runs off 11 hits in 12 innings pitched. Milone has 15 strikeouts and a 1-0 record in that small sample size, and it doesn’t really indicate how he will do in this one.

                            Player To Watch

Bryce Harper -- The Nationals were rumored to be shopping their star outfielder at the trading deadline when the playoffs seemed unlikely, but they kept him to make a run this year. Harper is a free agent at the end of the season and it’s unknown if he will return so the Nationals need to takr advantage of his presence.

Harper is batting .234 this season but does have an on-base percentage of .378 with 27 homers, 70 RBIs and an .875 OPS. Harper has picked it up lately and is capable of putting up huge numbers in any game he plays, so the Braves have to keep him in check.

                            Free MLB ATS Picks

The Nationals have a very high sense of urgency at this point as they have to play well in order to catch the Braves and Phillies. Even though Atlanta has the better record, Washington is the more talented team and gets this one at home.

Look for the Nationals to continue their comeback with a much-needed victory in MLB betting lines.

MLB ATS Pick: Nationals 6, Braves 4

CLEVELAND (AP) Francisco Lindor connected for a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning as the Cleveland Indians again moved 10 games ahead of Minnesota in the AL Central with a 5-2 win over the Twins on Wednesday night.

Lindor, who struck out with the winning run at second base in the ninth in a loss on Tuesday, drove the first pitch from Trevor Hildenberger (2-3) over the wall in right to trigger a wild celebration.

Jason Kipnis singled with one out in the ninth before Twins right fielder Max Kepler robbed Yan Gomes of extra bases with a leaping catch before crashing into the wall. Brandon Guyer followed with a single to bring up Lindor, who capped a wild ninth inning with his 29th homer.

The All-Star shortstop skipped around the bases before being mobbed at home plate by his teammates.

Down 2-1, Minnesota tied it in the ninth on Miguel Sano's leadoff homer against Cody Allen (4-4), who wound up with a blown save and win.

PHOENIX - Patrick Corbin struck out nine in a combined four-hitter, David Peralta had four hits and two RBIs, and the Arizona Diamondbacks rolled over the Philadelphia Phillies 6-0 on Wednesday.

Corbin (10-4) had the Phillies guessing most of the game, allowing four hits in 7 1/3 innings while reaching a career-high 183 strikeouts this season. The left-hander did not give up a home run for the ninth straight start, the longest stretch by an Arizoba Diamondbacks pitcher since Brandon Webb in 2003.

Peralta hit a two-run triple off Vince Velasquez (8-9) in the third inning, sending the Phillies right-hander to his first loss since June 25.

Peralta had his fourth four-hit game of the homestand and tied the franchise record with 10 hits in the three-game series. He is 18 for 31 since taking two days off with shoulder tightness last week.

Acuna also made a sensational catch in the fourth inning to rob Matt Adams of a home run. Acuna raced to the center-field wall, leaped and snagged the ball with his outstretched glove before sprawling on the warning track.

Bryce Harper hit his 28th home run for the Nationals, who showed their frustration in the sixth inning when rookie Juan Soto and hitting coach Kevin Long were ejected by home plate umpire Greg Gibson.

DeGrom (6-7) ended a seven-start winless streak, allowing four hits in a 100-pitch outing and lowering his major league-leading ERA to 1.77. He won for the first time since June 18 at Colorado.

Brandon Nimmo tied a team record with three doubles and drove in three runs to help the Mets win for the 22nd time in their last 66 games.
