      Pudge Junior

The San Francisco Giants kick off an interleague series againts the defending World Series champion Houston Astros on Monday night in a good pitching matchup. All-Star RHP Charlie Morton takes the bump for the 'Stros, while the Giants counter with rookie RHP Dereck Rodriguez, son of Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez.

The Astros have won four of their past five games overall, and they're also 4-1 in the past five against teams with a winning overall record. In addition, Houston has posted an 11-4 mark over the past 15 road games against a right-handed starting pitcher, while posting an impressive 38-17 mark across their past 55 games away from home. Houston has also been outstanding against National League West clubs, winning 38 of their past 54 against that division. Houston has cooled off a bit with Morton toeing the slab, as they're just 1-4 in his past five tries against a team with a winning overall record. The Astros are also an impressive 17-3 in their past 20 starts by Morton when working on five days of rest, and they're a perfect 7-0 across his past seven in the first game of a new series.

So what about Rodriguez? D-Rod? Pudge Jr.? He'll get his own nickname soon enough if he continues to pitch well. San Francisco has won seven of the rookie's past eight starts, and they're 4-1 in his past five outings at home. The Giants have been money at home aginst right-handed starting pitching, going 16-5 across the past 21 games. They have had their issues against RHP lately, however, winning just two of their past seven, while going 1-5 in the past six at home. They are also a dismal 2-5 in the past seven interleague battles, while cashing in just two of their past seven against AL West clubs, too.

Total bettors might want to thump the 'under'. The under is 5-2 in Morton's past seven overall, while going a perfect 4-0 in their past four against NL West clubs. The under is also 25-10-2 in the past 37 against NL West foes. For the Giants, the under is 5-1 in Rodriguez's past six apperances, and 4-1 in their past five interleague battles. There isn't a huge history between these sides lately, but the under is 4-1 in the past five meetings, and a perfect 5-0 in San Francisco.

      Looking Ahead

      Monday, Aug. 6

Trevor Bauer and the Indians host the Twins, looking to finally get it right. The boys from the Twin Cities have been a thorn in the side of the first-place Tribe, and they're 4-0 in Kyle Gibson's past four road assignments against the Indians. The Indians, however, are 5-2 in Bauer's past seven against the Twinkies.

There are plenty of Minnesota batters who have had their way against Bauer. Jorge Polanco is 4-for-17 (.235), which isn't great, but three of those hits are good for homers. Eddie Rosario is hitting .364 (12-for-33) with a double, two homers and nine RBI against Bauer, while Joe Mauer is hitting a cool .302 (13-for-43) with seven doubles, a homer and six RBI. Logan Morrison also doesn't have a long history against the Cleveland righty, but he is 6-for-17 (.353) with two doubles, a homer and three RBI against Bauer. The Indians hope Bauer can stay hot at home, as he is 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA across 75 2/3 innings over 11 starts, and the opposition is hitting just .194 against him while he has 97 strikeouts.

Marlins LHP Wei-Yin Chen has some of the wildest splits in baseball. He'll take the ball against the visiting Cardinals at Marlins Park. He is 2-2 with a 2.18 ERA in eight outings over 45 1/3 innings with a .209 opponent batting average at home, and 1-6 with a 10.27 ERA over 37 2/3 innings across nine road assignments. It's a good thing Monday's game is on his home field. He has struggled at all venues since the All-Star break, going 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA in two starts. He'll be opposed by RHP Luke Weaver. The Cardinals are 11-5 across the past 16 on the road with Weaver on the hill, including 5-2 in his past seven away games against a losing team. St. Louis has won nine of their past 11 visits to Miami. The over is also 12-3-1 in the past 16 in South Florida, and 12-3 in the previous 15 meetings overall.

      Weather Report

In Cleveland, the weather is expected to roll in during the middle innings, with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms forecast at 8pm, bumping up to a 50-50 chance by 9pm. There will also be wind blowing from 9-12 mph out to right field. In the Windy City, the Yankees and White Sox will also face a 40 percent or better chance of thunderstorms starting at 7pm CT through midnight. Those are the only two trouble spots, however.

      Tuesday, Aug. 7

The Braves and Nationals will battle in a day-night doubleheader from Nationals Park on Tuesday. The Nats split a doubleheader over the weekend against the Reds on Saturday, and they were swept by the Dodgers back on May 19 in their only other twin bill. Atlanta split their only double dip on May 28 against the Mets. So far there have been 23 doubleheaders with just four resulting in a sweep. The home team has swept a doubleheader just twice in 2018.

Orioles RHP Alex Cobb will face his former employer, the Tampa Bay Rays, in St. Petersburg. The home fans might give him a very nice welcome in his first time at Tropicana Field in a visitors' uniform. He has lost both of his previous starts against the Rays, although his last outing on July 26 resulted in a quality start, his second straight outing with three or fewer earned runs and six or more innings pitched.

Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez will meet the Rangers in Arlington. The road has been unkind to King Felix, as he is 4-4 with a dismal 7.58 ERA across 10 starts while the opposition is hitting .298 against him away from home. Hernandez isn't overpowering batters anymore, either, as he has just 37 strikeouts over 48 2/3 road frames. He has two no-decisions against Texas this season, but a 6.10 ERA with a .250 opponent batting average across 10 1/3 innings. Elvis Andrus loves facing Hernandez, as he has piled up 16 RBI in 102 at-bats with a respectable .284 batting average.

      Weather Report

There will be a cool jetstream to straightaway center field at AT&T Park for Tuesday's matinee battle between the Astros and Giants. The winds will be blowing 11-15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, so watch the 'over' play. Across the bay, the Dodgers and A's will also face windy conditions, blowing 11-15 mph out to the right-center field power alley.

In Cleveland, the weather is expected to pull out around 8pm ET, and there is a three-hour window with favorable conditions before the weather is forecast to arrive again by 11pm ET. This one will be touch-and-go. At Citi Field, precipitation won't be the problem, but winds will be the issue. The winds will be blowing 10-13 mph to the left-center field power alley for the Reds-Mets outing.

In Denver, the Pirates and Rockies could see a passing thunderstorm late in the game, but expect the contest to be mostly uninterrupted.

MLB Preview - Houston Astros at San Francisco Giants

The Houston Astros are the best team in the American League West but they have yet to shake the Oakland Athletics as the stretch run begins. Houston has much more talent but is dealing with injuries to several key stars right now so the reserves must keep the team afloat. The Astros will hit the road to take on the San Francisco Giants in a pivotal game for both sides to begin the week.

San Francisco is in fourth place in the National League West but is still hanging around, only five games back of the co-leaders Arizona and Los Angeles. The Giants need to excel down the stretch to sneak into the playoffs and must take advantage of facing a short-handed Astros team in this one.

This is an intriguing matchup and the odds could be close in MLB wagering.

This MLB baseball game will be held at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California at 10:15 p.m ET on Monday, August 6th, 2018.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

            Odds Analysis

The Astros enter this matchup with a record of 71-42 overall but have only won three of their past 10 while short-handed. Houston has been really good on the road this year with a 39-18 record.

The Giants are 57-56 this season. They have been much better at home than on the road this season. San Francisco enters with a 32-22 mark at home on the year and will aim to keep it up.

            Probable Pitchers

The Astros are expected to send talented right-hander Charlie Morton to the hill. He is 12-2 with a 2.90 ERA on the season and a 1.16 WHIP. Morton has 159 strikeouts in 124.1 innings pitcher as he can overpower hitters with his pure stuff. Morton gave up two runs in six innings while striking out eight in his last start, a win over the Mariners.

The Giants will counter with Dereck Rodriguez. He is 5-1 with a 2.59 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in the season. Rodriguez has only started 10 games but he has looked good doing so. He limited the Padres to one run in seven innings last time out, striking out seven.

            Injury Update

The Astros are dealing with several key injuries. Star second baseman Jose Altuve has a knee injury which has sidelined him, while star shortstop Carlos Correa is dealing with a back injury. Correa is on a minor league rehab assignment and could return this week, but he has only played in two games and is not expected back for this matchup.

Additionally, star outfielder George Springer injured his thumb on a slide Sunday and left the game. The severity is unknown but it would not be a surprise to see him out of the lineup as well. When Houston has everyone in the fold it has one of the most potent offenses in baseball, but the expected absence of Altuve, Correa and Springer takes some serious thunder away.

            Free MLB ATS Picks

The Giants get a break with all of the Astros injuries, but don’t pencil them in for a win quite yet. Morton has dominated this season and should do well against a mediocre San Francisco lineup. The Astros are short-handed but they are still a good baseball team and will come away with this road win to right the ship a bit in MLB gambling.

MLB Betting – New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox

The New York Yankees will try and put the disaster of the Red Sox series behind them, as they visit the Chicago White Sox on Monday night on ESPN. Realistically the Yankees are not going to catch Boston in the AL East, so now New York has to hold off Oakland for the top Wild Card spot. New York should be able to get well in this series, as they face a Chicago team that is about 30 games under .500. Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox
Date and Time: Monday, August 6, 2018, 8:10 p.m. ET
Location: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, IL
              MLB Odds: Yankees -185, O/U 9.5 over
Probable Pitchers: Lance Lynn vs. Dylan Covey
              TV Coverage: ESPN

The Yankees are simply not the same team without Aaron Judge in the lineup. He won’t be back until late August and New York’s offense simply isn’t as good without their big bat carrying the load. New York was 30-25 in their first 55 road games, with 21 games going over, 31 going under, with three pushes. They are averaging 5.1 runs per game and giving up 3.7 runs per contest.

The White Sox are 21-33 at home, with 29 games going over, 24 going under the total, with one push. They are averaging just over 4 runs per game and giving up nearly 5 runs per contest.

              Starting Pitchers

The Yankees finally decided to put Sonny Gray in the bullpen, so it is Lance Lynn getting a chance to take his spot. Lynn is nothing special, but he can’t be any worse than Gray. Lynn is 7-8 on the season with a 4.89 ERA. His overall numbers are okay, as he has pitched 106.2 innings and given up 110 hits. He went 4.1 innings last time out in relief against the Orioles and allowed no runs and five hits.

Covey is 4-7 on the season with a 5.57 ERA. He has thrown 72.2 innings and given up 81 hits. He had his one good start against Seattle last month, but you almost have to throw that out because the Mariners haven’t been hitting lately. Even with that good outing he is 1-6 in his last eight starts with an 8.68 ERA.

              Key Stats

The Yankees are 17-8 in the last 25 meetings in this series. The Yankees are 24-7 in their last 31 vs. the American League Central. The Yankees are 1-5 in their last 6 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The White Sox are 9-3 in their last 12 games vs. a right-handed starter. The White Sox are 10-25 in their last 35 series openers. The White Sox are 1-7 in Covey’s last 8 starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 18-6-2 in the Yankees last 26 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 6-0 in the White Sox last 6 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 6-1 in the White Sox last 7 home games. The Over is 6-1 in Covey’s last 7 starts overall. The Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Chicago.

              Yankees vs. White Sox Picks

The Yankees should be much better off with Lynn in the rotation than with Gray. Lynn is a proven commodity who can handle pitching in pressure situations. He won’t be great, but with the New York offense he won’t need to do much more than go 6 or 7 innings and give up three runs. That is Lynn in a nutshell. He throws a lot of innings and is a workhorse. He won’t be great, but he won’t be terrible and with a team that scores a lot of runs that should be enough.

There is nothing to like about Covey and the White Sox. Chicago is one of the worst teams in the league and they are overmatched in this one. I will lay the price and take the Yankees on Monday night.

Yankees vs. White Sox Pick: Yankees and Over
Yankees vs. White Sox Score Prediction: Yankees 7, White Sox 3

                • Lynn's solid outing helps Yankees beat White Sox
                  August 7, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Lance Lynn pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning in his first start with New York, and the Yankees rebounded from their tough weekend in Boston by beating the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Monday night.

Lynn provided a big boost for New York after it dropped a season-high five straight games, including a four-game sweep by the major league-leading Red Sox. The series concluded with Aroldis Chapman blowing a save opportunity in a 10-inning loss at Fenway Park late Sunday night.

Enter Lynn (8-8), who was acquired in a trade with Minnesota on July 30 and tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief in his Yankees debut Wednesday. The veteran right-hander, who replaced Sonny Gray in New York's rotation, retired 19 in a row before Nicky Delmonico led off the eighth with a single to right.

After Tim Anderson flied out, A.J. Cole finished the three-hitter for the AL wild-card leaders.

Dylan Covey (4-8) was charged with four runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander dropped to 1-6 in his last seven starts.

                  INDIANS 10, TWINS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trevor Bauer struck out 11 and allowed three hits in six innings, and the Cleveland Indians hit four home runs in routing the Minnesota Twins 10-0 on Monday night.

Bauer (11-6) has 206 strikeouts this season, one behind Boston's Chris Sale for the AL lead. The right-hander has 10 double-figure strikeout games, tying him with Sale for the league lead. Bauer also leads the AL with 159 2/3 innings pitched.

Edwin Encarnacion drove in four runs, including a three-run homer in the seventh. Yonder Alonso, Brandon Guyer and Jason Kipnis also homered for Cleveland, which leads Minnesota by 10 games in the AL Central.

Alonso's home run started Cleveland's four-run fourth while Guyer added a two-run shot, both coming off Kyle Gibson (5-9).

Adam Cimber, Oliver Perez and Dan Otero each pitched an inning to close Cleveland's AL-leading 12th shutout.

                  ROCKIES 2, PIRATES 0

DENVER (AP) - Kyle Freeland and the Colorado bullpen combined on a two-hitter to help the Rockies beat the Pirates in a game that was interrupted 32 minutes by rain.

Freeland (10-7) allowed two hits and struck out five over seven stellar innings. Relievers Seunghwan Oh and Wade Davis combined to close out the win. Davis pitched a perfect ninth for his 32nd save in 38 chances.

It was a positive step for a beleaguered bullpen that endured three walk-off losses - two by Davis - during a 2-5 road swing.

Joe Musgrove (4-6) retired the first 12 batters he faced before allowing a single to Nolan Arenado on the first pitch of the fifth. The right-hander scattered four hits over seven innings and allowed two runs, one earned.

                  CUBS 3, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Javier Baez went deep, Cole Hamels pitched six strong innings and the Cubs beat the Royals.

Baez hit the first pitch from reliever Kevin McCarthy (4-4) in the sixth inning to center for his 25th home run, putting the Cubs ahead 2-1.

Baez doubled in the eighth to score Jason Heyward, upping his RBI total to an NL-leading 88.

Hamels (7-9) is 2-0 since the Cubs acquired him in a July 27 trade with the Texas Rangers. He allowed one run and seven hits.

                  METS 6, REDS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Jeff McNeil homered in getting three more hits with his most unusual bat, leading Noah Syndergaard and the Mets over the Reds in a matchup of struggling teams.

Wilmer Flores, playing on his 27th birthday, and Austin Jackson each had three hits and Kevin Plawecki homered for the Mets.

Both clubs had lost five of six going into the series opener. Before it began, Reds pitcher Matt Harvey was honored with a video tribute, with the former Mets ace drawing a mix of cheers and boos in his first game at Citi Field since being traded to Cincinnati in May.

McNeil's homer made it 6-0, and Syndergaard (7-2) seemed to be in complete charge when he retired the first batter in the seventh. But he then hit the next two batters with pitches and the Reds went on to rally for four runs.

Homer Bailey (1-9) took the loss.

                  MARLINS 2, CARDINALS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Javy Guerra cleaned up a ninth-inning mess created by struggling closer Kyle Barraclough, getting Yadier Molina to hit into a double play to end the Marlins' victory over the Cardinals.

After Wei-Yin Chen pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, Miami led 2-0 going into the ninth and handed the game off to Barraclough.

Paul DeJong and Harrison Bader opened the inning with hard-hit singles, then Yairo Munoz walked. Pinch-hitter Kolten Wong struck out swinging, but Matt Carpenter drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-1 and end Barraclough's night.

Guerra got Molina to bounce into a double play for his first save since Sept. 27, 2014 while with the Chicago White Sox.

Luke Weaver (6-10) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings for St. Louis.

Chen (4-8) struck out four and walked two.

                  MARINERS 4, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ryon Healy had a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the 12th inning and the Mariners beat the Rangers after blowing an early three-run lead.

Mitch Haniger scored from second base when Healy hit a hard grounder through the left side of the infield. Haniger had doubled into the left field corner off Eddie Butler (2-2) a pitch after Jean Segura was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Sam Tuivailala (4-3), the seventh Seattle pitcher, had a perfect 11th for his first decision in four appearances since getting acquired July 27 in a trade from St. Louis. Edwin Diaz pitched the 12th for his majors-best 42nd save in 45 chances despite allowing a pair of singles.

                  ASTROS 3, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Roberto Osuna got the win in his first appearance with Houston after Marwin Gonzalez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Astros over the Giants.

Osuna (1-0) hadn't pitch in the majors since May 6 while serving a 75-game suspension for violating MLB's domestic violence policy. Osuna was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays last Monday in a deal that sent back closer Ken Giles, and he became eligible to pitch Sunday. A few fans booed when he entered the game in the eighth inning. He retired the side in order on five pitches.

Hector Rondon closed out the 2-hour, 26-minute game with his 12th save in 15 chances.

San Francisco closer Will Smith (1-2) blew his second save in nine opportunities after issuing walks to Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel. Gonzalez followed with a towering drive to left for his 10th homer.

                  ANGELS 6, TIGERS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Andrelton Simmons hit a two-run homer and made several spectacular defensive plays to lead the Angels to a victory over the Tigers.

Eric Young Jr. hit his first homer of the season, drove in two runs and made a diving catch in deep center field to end the eighth inning for the Angels, who won for just the second time in eight games.

Simmons stepped up with two key hits and two runs while Mike Trout missed his fifth consecutive game with a sore right wrist for the Angels. The two-time AL MVP's injury absence is the second-longest of his big-league career, surpassed only by the 39 games he missed last season with a torn thumb ligament.

Nicholas Castellanos hit a first-inning homer, but the Tigers managed just three hits as their offensive slump continued.

Nick Tropeano (5-6) pitched five innings of one-hit ball and retired 12 of his final 13 batters before heading to the clubhouse after just 62 pitches with shoulder tightness.

Matthew Boyd (6-10) pitched six-hit ball into the sixth inning, but took his sixth loss in nine starts overall.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Talking baseball TV announcers……

Meant to do this during the All-Star break, but got sidetracked, so today we bring you my comments/thoughts on major league baseball announcers.

I watch baseball on TV for at least 5-6 hours a day every day for six months, so I’m qualified to comment on stuff like this. This is for TV only; don’t hear much radio these days.

I’m not going to do straight rankings, but here are my comments on baseball TV guys.

                      1) Best duo: Mets, when Gary Cohen/Ron Darling are on. They talk about the game, they’re smart and they’re fairly honest where the home team is concerned. If you sit and listen to a Mets’ game, you’ll be smarter about baseball when the game is over.

When Keith Hernandez is on with Cohen, it isn’t nearly as good; Hernandez is so self-centered it hampers the broadcast, especially with the Mets out of the pennant race. He’ll talk about his cat or his house in Sag Harbor or complain about the traffic. Not good.

When Hernandez/Darling are both on with Cohen, it is still an excellent broadcast.

                      2) Brewers’ duo of Brian Anderson/Bill Schroeder are really good, but Anderson takes a lot of time off; he is usually gone for a month during the NBA playoffs, but his replacement Matt Lepay is also good, mainly because Schroeder is an excellent analyst and a friendly guy.

                      3) Colorado has Drew Goodman/Jeff Huson most of the time, and they are very good; Goodman is a New York guy who is a lot like Gary Cohen- little bit more of a homer (they talk about Nolan Arenado like he is a combo of Brooks Robinson/Mike Schmidt).

When Huson is off, Ryan Spilborghs is in the booth; he is a bit of a character, a funny ex-player who takes great care to give you the players’ perspective of how baseball works.

                      4) When Red Sox had Don Orsillo/Jerry Remy on TV, they had broadcasting gold, but Orsillo got the boot for whatever reason, and now humorless Dave O’Brien is the play/play guy, which renders Remy useless, since he is at his best when he is laughing.

Dennis Eckersley is good in his occasional appearances; last week, O’Brien asked him about his old teammates and Eck responded: “….I had a teammate once who stole my wife!!!”

TV doesn’t get any better than that……lol

                      5) Orsillo has moved on to San Diego, where he works with Mark Grant, who is a funny guy. They are good to listen to, but the Padres stink every year and sometimes you can tell that Orsillo’s heart is still in Boston. Mark Sweeney is the sub analyst who will be very, very good on the national stage someday.

                      6) Joe Davis is the Dodgers’ TV announcer, replacing the legendary Vin Scully, the greatest baseball announcer of all-time; tough job, huge shoes to fill, but Davis is really good, and he is low-key which works well in Los Angeles.

Davis is only 30 years old; he does football/basketball for FOX and is really good.

                      7) Bob Carpenter is a really good play/play guy for the Washington Nationals; the analyst is FP Santangelo, who is the equivalent of giving an 8-year the microphone and letting him work a game. He is upbeat and seems like a good guy, but they could do better. Every time a team gets its first hit of the game, “….there goes the no-hitter.” Even in the first inning.

                      8) Cincinnati Reds’ announcers (usually Thom Brennaman/Chris Walsh) are brutally honest; they’ll thrash the home team, if they think it is deserved. It often is.

                      9) Duane Kuiper is probably the best play/play guy who is a former player; he really is super on Giants’ games. His analyst is Mike Krukow, who is a homer, and not in a good way. Jon Miller/Dave Flemming do the Giants’ radio— thats a lot of broadcasting talent for one team.

                      10) Miami Marlins used to have a great TV team; Rich Waltz/Tommy Hutton- they were really good, but the Marlins let both of them go. Who knows why, but it hurts their broadcasts.

                      11) Victor Rojas/Mark Gubicza are very good on Angels’ games; Rojas is the son of Cookie Rojas, the old second baseman. Gubicza is always upbeat and gives credit to both teams.

                      12) As for the Bronx Bombers, I think David Cone could be a great analyst; he is funny and smart, but the whole condescending nature of the Bronx franchise makes me want to puke.

I’ll say this for them; friend of mine’s son was a runner in their TV/radio booth a few years ago and all of those people were nice to him, including John Sterling/Suzyn Waldman, the radio announcers, so they get points for that.

Michael Kay was a sportswriter who became a solid play-by-play guy. When Paul O’Neill is an analyst, you can hear him turning pages of the other team’s media guide as he talks—he seems to do zero prep work on the other team.

                      13) As for national announcers, Matt Vasgersian/Alex Rodriguez are very good on the Sunday night games; Jessica Mendoza is neither good nor bad— she is in on a pass, and she seems smart enough to know it.

I have a friend who worked as a professional announcer and tried to make a living at it; he worked really hard, but never made it. To see someone get passed ahead to the highest-profile job on TV simply because she is a woman is ridiculous, but that is the world we live in today.

                      • LEADING OFF: Trout sits, Taillon and Betts meet post-cancer
                        August 6, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        BLUE BIRTHDAY

Mike Trout is likely to sit out the Angels' game against Detroit because of a sore right wrist, depriving Los Angeles' fans of what's become an annual treat: Seeing Trout do incredible things on his birthday. Trout will turn 27 on Tuesday, and he has a history of throwing celebrations for himself. He has homered on his birthday four times in his first six full big-league seasons. He did it at the Big A last season, homering and also getting his 1,000th career hit. Trout received a cortisone injection on his wrist Monday, and the Angels are hopeful he can return to the lineup on the weekend. He missed his fifth straight game Monday.

                        PITCHING PALS

Pittsburgh's Jameson Taillon and Colorado's Chad Bettis will pitch in a game featuring two starters bouncing back from testicular cancer. Bettis underwent surgery in November 2016 for testicular cancer and continued cancer treatments through that spring and into last season. So when Taillon had surgery to treat testicular cancer on May 8, 2017, he had an instant line of support. Taillon spoke a few times with Bettis during his treatment, calling their exchanges ''comforting.''

''I just felt like if I needed anything or had a question, I was very comfortable going to ask him about any part of the process,'' Taillon said.

                        DOUBLE UP

The Braves and Nationals open a four-game series with a doubleheader. Atlanta is right on Philadelphia's heals in the NL East race, while Washington is five games back of the Braves. Atlanta's Max Fried (1-4, 3.38 ERA) faces Jefry Rodriguez (0-1, 6.86) in the opener, and Nationals ace Max Scherzer (15-5, 2.33) opposes Sean Newcomb (10-5, 3.23) in the nightcap.

                        HAPP HEALING

The sputtering Yankees got some good news Monday when left-hander J.A. Happ moved a little closer to returning from hand, foot and mouth disease. Manager Aaron Boone said Happ is no longer contagious. Assuming everything goes well over the next couple of days, Happ is on track to start Thursday against Texas in the opener of an 11-game homestand. ''He's out of the woods, virus-wise,'' Boone said.

                        FAR FROM CY YEARS

Struggling former AL Cy Young Award winners Bartolo Colon and Felix Hernandez will be on the mound when the Rangers host the Mariners in the middle game of their three-game series. The last victory for both hefty right-handers came on June 30. Colon (5-10, 5.18 ERA), the 45-year-old hurler who was the 2005 Cy Young winner while with the Angels, has lost five consecutive starts for Texas since his 246th career win that matched Dennis Martinez for the most by a player born in Latin America. The 32-year-old Hernandez (8-9, 5.49), who won the Cy Young with the Mariners in 2010, is 0-3 with a 7.64 ERA his last four starts.

                        ROBINSON GETTING READY

Robinson Cano has begun his minor league rehab assignment ahead of his return from an 80-game suspension for violating baseball's joint drug agreement. Cano played Monday for Triple-A Tacoma and is scheduled to play there again Tuesday. After that, he may play some games for Class A Everett later in the week. Cano is eligible to rejoin Seattle on Aug. 14. When he does, he's expected to play first, second and third base.
