MLB Game Preview - Cleveland Indians at Boston Red Sox

There isn’t much drama left for the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox, as they are both cruising into the playoffs. The vision for both teams is bigger than a simple postseason berth, as the World Series is a legitimate goal for each side. Boston and Cleveland will face off this week in a matchup that could be a preview of the postseason.

The Red Sox have the best record in the major leagues and will easily win the American League East. The Indians are cruising to the American League Central title. Boston has dominated all comers on the season and should be the slight favorite in this matchup at home. Cleveland has hit a nice groove lately and is sending its Cy Young-caliber starting pitcher to the hill, which should give it some confidence in pulling the upset in MLB gambling.

The Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox will face off on Monday, August 20th, 2018, at 7:10 p.m. ET at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The game will be nationally televised on MLB Network.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

        Odds Analysis

The Indians are 70-52 on the season and they have won eight of their past 10 outings. Cleveland is 32-28 away from home on the season. The Indians have a run-differential of plus-130, which is the fourth-best in the major leagues behind the Red Sox, Astros and Yankees.

The Red Sox are an incredible 88-36 on the year. They have dominated all season, especially at home, where Boston is 44-15. The team has a great combination of hitting, pitching and defense and is definitely the team to beat in the push for the World Series.

        Probable Pitchers

The Indians have a decent shot at winning this game because they will send out star right-hander Corey Kluber. He is 15-6 on the year with a 2.68 ERA and a microscopic 0.92 WHIP. Kluber has struck out 160 batters in 168 innings while only walking 22 batters. He is consistently among the best pitchers in the major leagues and has continued that dominance in 2018. Kluber gave up only one run in seven innings last time out in a victory over the Reds.

The Red Sox will counter with Rick Porcello. He is 15-5 on the season with a 4.04 ERA. Porcello was hammered for seven runs in four innings two starts ago but bounced back with seven innings of one-run ball in a victory over the Phillies last time out. Porcello struck out 10 batters in that outing and is averaging nearly a strikeout per inning.

        Key Stat

        677. That’s the number of runs scored by the Red Sox, which is easily the most in the major leagues. They have a large collection of impact bats, led by Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez. Betts is batting .343 this season with 27 homers, 64 RBIs and a 1.082 OPS. Martinez is hitting .331 with 38 home runs, 106 RBIs and a 1.064 OPS.

While Betts and Martinez are leading the way, the Boston offense is strong down the line, with other bats like Xander Bogaerts, Mitch Moreland, Steve Pearce and Rafael Devers coming up with big hits consistently throughout the season.

        Free MLB ATS Picks

The matchup between Kluber and the strong Red Sox offense should be a good one. Cleveland’s offense is also solid so this should be a competitive matchup. Boston is great at home, but look for Cleveland to come up with enough big hits against Porcello to sneak out an upset victory. Kluber will get out of jams when needed to pick up another win in MLB gambling.

MLB ATS Pick: Indians 5, Red Sox 4

          Monday MLB Best Bet

          Baltimore vs Toronto

On a Monday where the MLB betting board has the majority of games between AL opponents, one matchup that's going to get overlooked by many is the start of this Baltimore/Toronto series. Sure, matchups like Cleveland/Boston and Houston/Seattle are definitely more appealing from the overall perspective of which team(s) will compete for a championship in October, but this Baltimore/Toronto game presents a few different angles - no matter how you look at it – that can be much more applicable in a betting market.

So let's break down this series opener:

Odds: Baltimore (+161) vs Toronto (-171); Total set at 9

Major changes will be coming to both clubs come October after some very disappointing seasons, but those changes in Toronto might come sooner than later with manager John Gibbons continually discussing and addressing his (possible) departure from Toronto for the second time this year. Gibbons has already stated he doesn't really want to be around for a “rebuild” that it looks like Toronto is heading towards, and with the losses continuing to mount, it's become of question of “when” and not “if” he will be relieved of his role as the skipper in Toronto.

With rosters expanding in 10+ days with September call-ups looming, you can't help but wonder if Jays management wants Gibbons gone before then so he can't have any sort of influence (good or bad) over the young guys that should be the future of this organization. I am definitely not privy to those decisions by any means, but it would not surprise me to see Gibbons get served his walking papers by the time we flip the calendars over to September.

The Jays got their asses handed to them in New York over the weekend (outscored 28-13 in a three-game sweep) as Gibbons is clearly at the end of his rope as evidenced by his early ejection in the finale. He's completely lost the team at this point, with a 4-9 SU run since returning from a rowdy series in Seattle at the beginning of the month, and it's become clear that this team needs a new voice soon, even if it is just for a month. Yet, regarding tonight, Toronto welcomes in a Baltimore team that they've dominated all year long in 2018 and despite this run of poor results, are laying heavy chalk against an Orioles team that hasn't cared about results for a long time now.

Baltimore has been swept in their last two trips to Toronto this season (seven straight losses) and have lost nine of 10 overall to the Blue Jays. That's a big part of why this line opened up where it did, and with all that recent history in favor of Toronto, it's no surprise to see them getting the bulk of the action on the ML tonight. The betting percentage numbers at VegasInsider.com show 85% + of the ML bets already made are on Toronto and I wouldn't expect that percentage to drop too much when bettors dive into this matchup and see all those Toronto victories this year.

However, the Toronto Blue Jays team at the end of August is quite different then the one that last saw Baltimore a month ago in terms of the mental approach to the game. Back in June and July when Toronto swept the Orioles twice, there were plenty of Blue Jays trying to showcase themselves for other squads in regards to a possible trade. Former Jays starter J.A Happ (now a member of the Yankees) pitched in two of those seven victories, and even tonight's starter Marco Estrada counted for one.

But Toronto has mentally 'checked out' of the 2018 season now as I'm sure they ave some thoughts about how long Gibbons will be around, and I don't care what the season series says, I'm not about to even consider laying -170 on a team that's not mentally engaged in what happens. Conversely, Baltimore may not care about many wins and losses this year, but on a professional level, they've got to be sick and tired of losing to a sub-par team like Toronto.

Baltimore has lost eight of their last 10 overall as they aren't exactly the best team to back either, but in those eight losses they were priced as +200 or greater underdogs in five of those games, and two others had them close in the +185 to +199 range as well. This is not a team that's expected to win often, but those prices were also against dominate division leaders in Boston and Cleveland. The 2018 Blue Jays are nowhere near as good as those teams and yet, because of the Jays recent dominance in this series – especially at home – they are being priced in a similar fashion.

Flat out, I just don't buy it as the Jays are in a freefall now and it's gotten to the point where it's probably best for all involved to make some decisions now (ie Gibbons future) just to allow them to move on. It's become a toxic environment in that locker room with so many guys still there from Toronto's “glory years” of 2015-16 and the guys over in the Orioles locker room are going to want to finally get a win over this team again.

Baltimore is not going to get swept in Toronto for the third straight time this year, and considering we might not get a bigger underdog price on the Orioles in this series, I'm taking my shot with them tonight. I just don't see any arguments in favor of Toronto outside of their recent two sweeps over the Orioles – who had just lost Manny Machado the last time – and yet the majority are using that as their lone support to lay 70 cents on the dollar.

To me, that's how your bankroll takes a hit in a hurry, so I'm going the other way here as I believe the Orioles – given their “professional pride” to finally beat this Blue Jays team again – have a much better chance than the 36.9% implied odds at this price to win this game against a Toronto team that's just counting down the days until they all get a fresh start.

            • Kluber, Indians top Porcello, Red Sox 5-4
              August 20, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Greg Allen hit a tiebreaking homer right after Boston pitcher Rick Porcello was struck in the midsection by a line drive, and Corey Kluber tied for the major league wins lead as the Cleveland Indians beat the Red Sox 5-4 Monday night.

Kluber (16-6) pitched into the seventh inning and matched Washington's Max Scherzer and the Yankees' Luis Severino for the most victories in the majors. Michael Brantley and Melky Cabrera also homered to help the AL Central-leading Indians improve to 14-4 in August.

Xander Bogaerts had an early two-run single and an RBI single in the ninth for East-leading Boston. Ian Kinsler flied out with two runners on base, leaving the Red Sox with just their fifth loss in 22 games.

In a matchup of the AL's last two Cy Young Award winners, it was 3-all into the seventh. Porcello (15-6) retired the leadoff batter and retired the next hitter. Yan Gomes followed with a liner that hit Porcello near the stomach - Porcello retrieved the ball near the mound, threw to second for a forceout and then slid to his knees, grabbing the spot where he was hit.

Porcello was checked on the mound, took a practice toss or two, and stayed in the game. Two pitches later, Allen hit a drive into the Indians' bullpen for his second home run of the season.

              BRAVES 1, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryse Wilson worked five solid innings, becoming the third 20-year-old pitcher to start in his big league debut for Atlanta this season.

Wilson (1-0) allowed three hits, struck out five and walked three as Atlanta increased its NL East lead to one game over idle Philadelphia while ending its four-game skid.

Dan Winkler pitched the ninth, working around a leadoff single for his second save.

Pittsburgh has allowed exactly one run in five straight games, but has lost three of them. The organization hasn't done that since July 13-18, 1888, when they were the Alleghenys, according to Stats.

The Braves scored in the first inning when Freddie Freeman hit a two-out double and scored on Nick Markakis' single.

Pirates starter Chris Archer (4-6) was removed after four innings because of left leg discomfort. Pittsburgh is optimistic he'll make his next scheduled start.

              BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 3

TORONTO (AP) - Kendrys Morales homered twice, Marco Estrada pitched 5 1/3 innings to win his second straight start and Toronto improved to 8-0 at home against Baltimore.

Morales hit a one-out solo homer in the fourth, then added a three-run drive in the fifth - both off Baltimore right-hander Andrew Cashner (4-11) - for his 22nd career multihomer game.

Renato Nunez replied with a solo home run for the struggling Orioles, who have lost nine of their past 11.

Estrada (7-9) allowed three runs and seven hits, improving to 9-2 in 18 career games against Baltimore. Ken Giles finished for his 16th save in 16 opportunities.

              WHITE SOX 8, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Matt Davidson homered, Lucas Giolito (9-9) struck out six in six innings and Chicago spoiled Stephen Gonsalves' major league debut.

Playing without manager Rick Renteria, Chicago won for the fourth time in five games in the makeup of snowed-out April contest. Davidson drove in three runs, and Jose Abreu had two hits and two RBIs.

Renteria experienced lightheadedness before the game and was taken to a hospital as a precaution. Bench coach Joe McEwing served as the manager, and the team said tests on Renteria didn't show any problems.

Jake Cave and Max Kepler homered for the second straight day for Minnesota, which had won five of six.

Gonsalves (0-1) surrendered four runs in just 1 1/3 innings.

              RAYS 1, ROYALS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Ryan Yarbrough helped extend Tampa Bay's shutout streak to 23 innings, and the Rays got their only run via video replay.

Yarbrough (12-5) pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief of opener Hunter Wood. The rookie left-hander gave up two hits and a walk while striking out six, earning his major league-leading 10th relief win.

Jose Alvarado pitched the ninth for his fifth save and stretched the Rays' streak of scoreless innings, which included 14 over the weekend in Boston.

Willy Adames drove in the game's first run. After singles by Ji-Man Choi and Kevin Kiermaier in the second inning, Adames hit a two-out chopper over third base. Adames beat Rosell Herrera's throw across the diamond, but it took a 43-second review to reverse the original out call.

The run came off right-hander Jorge Lopez (0-3), who pitched five innings in his second major league start.

              BREWERS 5, REDS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Travis Shaw and Christian Yelich homered, Chase Anderson settled in after giving up two solo homers and Milwaukee rallied for a victory.

Shaw's two-run homer off Homer Bailey put the Brewers up 3-2 in the sixth. Jesus Aguilar singled to open the inning and Shaw followed with his 25th homer, lining an 0-2 pitch into the right-field seats.

Anderson (8-7) entered tied for the NL lead with 24 homers allowed and gave up second-inning solo shots to Eugenio Suarez and Phillip Ervin as the Reds took a 2-0 lead. Anderson then retired the final 14 hitters he faced.

Jeremy Jeffress pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

Bailey (1-11) kept the Brewers off the scoreboard until Yelich's 20th homer, a one-out solo shot in the fifth that made it 2-1. Bailey, who has not won since May 12, allowed three runs on five hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                    13) This is one of the many reasons Moneyball 2 could be coming to a theater near you in the near future:

On February 12, 2016, Milwaukee traded Khris Davis to the A’s, for minor leaguers Bubba Derby and Jacob Nottingham.

In three seasons for the A’s, Davis has hit 122 homers, knocked in 311 runs.

Derby is 5-5, 4.92 in 28 AAA games this year (15 starts); he hasn’t pitched in the majors yet, and is playing for Colorado Springs, where the high altitude can inflate your ERA.

Nottingham has played in seven MLB games; he is hitting .286 in AAA this year, again playing in a hitter-friendly environment.

Part of the reason Milwaukee traded Davis is that he can’t throw very well so he would’ve been a liability playing the outfield in a league with no DH.

                    12) Davis has four homers and a double in 10 career AB’s vs Justin Verlander.

Monday night, a bunch of Make-a-Wish kids were on the field before the game in Oakland; Davis had one of the kids sign his jersey, and he played the game with the kid’s signature on his left shoulder.

Second time, up, he hits a very long home run. The type of stuff Hollywood loves.

                    11) With college football starting soon, there was an article written with results of a poll where coaches were asked anonymously which of their colleagues was overrated/underrated.

Penn State’s James Franklin was one of most often mentioned as overrated, to which I say, “If you win at Vanderbilt (they went 24-15 under Franklin, 11-13 in SEC games) then you ain’t underrated.”

Penn State is 22-5 under Franklin the last two years. Enough said.

                    10) Jose Ureña tossed a complete game 2-hitter in Washington Sunday; now he can go on his 6-game suspension from hitting Ronald Acuña and life can resume.

Pitching inside has to be allowed; if a pitcher makes the batter move his feet, then all the better for the pitcher. You don’t want to see getting hitters getting drilled by pitches, but pitchers can’t allow them to be so comfortable in the batters’ box.

                    9) When Brandt Snedeker shot a 59 at the Wyndham Classic Thursday, he made only three putts longer than 10 feet, thats how well he was striking the ball.

                    8) Baseball is hard: Phillies’ IF Scott Kingery played in the Little League World Series when he was a kid, but he went hitless in Williamsport:

“We played three games [in the Little League World Series], went 2-1, and got knocked out because of a tiebreaker. I had zero hits, [in] probably 10, 11 at-bats. I hit a kid right in the chest at third base and he picked it up and threw me out. It was tough.”

Phillies’ P Nick Pivetta didn’t make his league’s All-Star team when he was 12.

                    7) Denver Broncos won their last six Week 1 games, the longest active winning streak on Opening Day in the NFL. This will be 8th year in row they open the season at home.

Dallas Cowboys are opening on road this year for the first time since 2012.

                    6) I was surprised to learn that San Antonio is the 7th-largest city in America, and San Diego is the 8th-largest. Why did the Chargers leave San Diego?

                    5) The Cactus Bowl will now be called the Cheez-It Bowl, and will be played at Chase Field (where the Diamondbacks play) on December 26.

                    4) From 2005-08, Doug Pederson was a high school football coach, at Calvary Baptist Academy in Louisiana. Now he is head coach of the Super Bowl champs. Life is funny sometimes.

                    3) Mets’ 1B Wilmer Flores has two brothers who are also named Wilmer. Seriously. His father must be related to George Foreman, who has four sons named George.

                    2) Clarification: Last week I was wondering why the kid on Puerto Rico’s Little League team was taken out of the game in the last inning, with a 2-0 lead- he had thrown 88 pitches.

Turns out it is a LLWS rule; when a pitcher hits 85 pitches, that is his last batter, so they had to put a new pitcher in at that point.

                    1) If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves-Cubs-Diamondbacks. Wild Card: Phil or Colo @ Milwaukee
AL: Red Sox-Indians-A’s or Hst. Wild Card: AL West #2 @ New York

                    • LEADING OFF: Stanton returns to Miami, Altuve off the DL
                      August 20, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

                      SOUTH BEACH STANTON

Giancarlo Stanton returns to Marlins Park for the first time since Miami traded him to the New York Yankees in December. Stanton spent his first eight years with the Marlins and was the NL MVP last season when he hit 59 home runs.

Stanton went 0 for 7 with four strikeouts in mid-April when the Marlins visited Yankee Stadium. The slugger has 32 homers this year and 299 in his career going into this two-game series.

''It's going to be weird for sure walking in, going to the visitors' side,'' Stanton said. ''But I am looking forward to it. It's a big part of my life, my time down there. It will be a cool experience.''

                      MISSED YOU

Star second baseman Jose Altuve is set to come off the disabled list and rejoin the Astros. Houston wobbled minus the reigning AL MVP, whose knee trouble put him on the DL for the first time in his career. The World Series champs lost 13 of the next 20 games after Altuve was sidelined July 25. He has led the AL in hits for four straight years and is batting .329 this season. Altuve is ready to be in the lineup at Seattle.

                      FROM WAY BACK

Blue Jays rookie catcher Danny Jansen is being reunited this week with his "big bro" Adam Jones as Toronto hosts Baltimore. When Jones was a minor leaguer with Class A Wisconsin in 2004, the then-18-year-old lived with Jansen's family. Jansen was 9 years old at the time but has since embarked on his own pro career, making his major league debut last week. Jones tweeted Monday recalling Jansen ''waking me up at 7am before you had to go to school'' and the two of them playing video games.

''This is a Movie,'' Jones added.

                      HEATING UP

Highly touted White Sox prospect Michael Kopech makes his major league debut when he throws his 100 mph fastball at home against the Twins. The 22-year-old righty was 7-7 with a 3.70 ERA at Triple-A, striking out 170 in 126 1/3 innings. Kopech was traded from Boston to Chicago after the 2016 season in the deal for ace Chris Sale.

                      CAREFUL

The White Sox will see how manager Rick Renteria is doing a day after he was taken to a hospital because of lightheadedness. The 56-year-old Renteria was at Target Field when the issue arose before the game against the Twins on Monday. A team official said tests didn't show any problems.

Bench coach Joe McEwing took over as manager for the one-game makeup in Minnesota. The teams now play twice in Chicago.
