  • Friday's Diamond Notes
    Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Cardinals (13-2 last 15)

St. Louis sat two games above .500 at the All-Star break and fired its longtime manager Mike Matheny prior to the second half. The Cardinals have picked things up in spite of not having the services of two of its top starting pitchers in Carlos Martinez and Adam Wainwright. St. Louis has been nothing short of terrific this month by compiling an incredible 17-4 record in August, while capturing seven series victories.

The latest series win came via a road sweep of the slumping Dodgers at Chavez Ravine, while limiting Los Angeles to a total of six runs in the series. The Cardinals face another NL West contender when they travel to Colorado on Friday. Miles Mikolas takes the mound for the Redbirds as the right-hander owns a perfect 7-0 record away from Busch Stadium this season, while St. Louis has won eight of his past nine starts overall.

Coldest team: Dodgers (3-7 last 10)

There are times when it seems Los Angeles can’t be stopped and is destined for another World Series appearance. And then there are times that the Dodgers don’t look like they belong in the playoffs. It seems like the latter instance currently as Los Angeles not only got swept at home by a red-hot St. Louis squad, but the Dodgers inexplicably fell to 32-33 at Chavez Ravine on the season. Since dropping 21 runs on Milwaukee back on August 2, the Dodgers have lost seven of their past nine home games, while scoring two runs or fewer six times.

Things should ease up this weekend as the Dodgers welcome in the last place Padres. However, Rich Hill is winless in his last two starts for Los Angeles, while allowing four earned runs in a 4-1 defeat at San Diego in July. Even though San Diego sits in the cellar of the NL West, the Padres have held their own of late in road series openers by winning in five of their last six opportunities, including at Colorado earlier this week.

Hottest pitcher: Dereck Rodriguez, Giants (6-1, 2.25 ERA)

The Giants return home after salvaging a four-game road split with the Mets. Rodriguez is back on the mound after a brief stint on the disabled list due to a hamstring injury. Prior to his injury, the San Francisco right-hander posted three consecutive starts in which he tossed seven innings each, while allowing eight hits and two earned runs. Following a 6-0 run by San Francisco in games he started, the Giants are only 2-2 in Rodriguez’s last four outings, as he faces the team his father (Pudge Rodriguez) spent many years with and where the younger Rodriguez was born, Texas.

Coldest pitcher: Ryan Borucki, Blue Jays (2-3, 4.27 ERA)

Don’t think Joe Carter is jumping through the door on Friday as the Blue Jays entertain the Phillies for a three-game interleague set. Toronto is fresh off a three-game sweep of doormat Baltimore, but Borucki has been anything but sharp of late. Borucki couldn’t escape the first inning in a 10-2 loss to the Yankees as the southpaw was tagged for six earned runs and recorded just two outs. That defeat actually snapped a five-game winning streak by Toronto in Borucki’s previous five outings, but the Jays are 1-3 in his four starts at Rogers Center this season.

Biggest OVER run: Tigers (7-2-1 last 10)

The Tigers tallied a total of four runs against the Cubs in a two-game split, but Detroit’s bats busted out against the other Chicago squad on Thursday. The Tigers scored seven runs to beat the White Sox as Detroit posted at least four runs for the sixth time in the last eight games. Three of the past four matchups between these AL Central squads have cashed the OVER as Michael Fulmer returns to the mound for the first time in five weeks for Detroit. Fulmer saw the OVER hit in his most recent start on July 14 at Houston, but the Tigers’ right-hander is riding a 4-0 UNDER streak in his past four outings at Comerica Park.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (7-0 last seven)

Pittsburgh is coming off an odd homestand in which it compiled a 2-5 record against the Cubs and Braves. Odd wouldn’t normally be the word with an outcome like that, but the Pirates’ pitching staff limiting those two first-place teams to two runs or less in six of those games. The only problem is Pittsburgh’s offense was nowhere to be found as the Bucs compiled one run or less in the five losses. The Pirates hit the road to Milwaukee for the weekend, trying to duplicate their success when they swept the Brewers in a five-game set prior to the All-Star break. Joe Musgrove takes the mound for Pittsburgh in the opener, as the right-hander has seen the UNDER in cash in four straight starts.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Diamondbacks

Wouldn’t this be an interesting World Series matchup? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but Arizona starts the weekend as the leaders of the NL West, while Seattle still has four games to make up for the second Wild Card spot in the American League.

The D-backs are playing their second consecutive AL West opponent after pulling off a two-game home sweep of the Angels. Arizona has won six of its past eight games as Zack Godley toes the rubber in tonight’s opener. Godley owns a career-high 13 wins this season, while Arizona has won each of his past three starts at Chase Field. The right-hander’s best start of the season came against another AL West foe as he tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters in a 6-0 victory over Texas last month.

The Mariners are coming off home series losses to last season’s World Series participants by dropping four of six to the Dodgers and Astros. Since sweeping Houston at Minute Maid Park earlier this month, the M’s own a 3-6 record to lose their spot as an AL Wild Card team. Erasmo Ramirez gets the ball tonight as Seattle’s makeshift rotation continues to struggle. However, Ramirez scattered three hits and allowed one run in five innings of his last start, a 5-4 win over the Dodgers as Seattle has won each of the past two starts made by the right-hander.

    Betcha didn’t know:
The Angels are a beat-up team right now with sluggers Mike Trout and Justin Upton on the disabled list. Los Angeles returns home to battle Houston as Andrew Heaney heads to the hill. The Halos have won eight of Heaney’s 11 home starts this season, including a pair of underdog wins against the Astros.

    Biggest public favorite:
    Indians (-210) at Royals

    Biggest public underdog:
    Mariners (+145) at Diamondbacks

    Biggest line move:
Cardinals (-105 to -113) at Rockies

        • Bote hits another winning HR, Cubs beat Reds 3-2 in 10th
          August 24, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Rookie David Bote struck again, connecting in the 10th inning for another game-ending home run that sent the Chicago Cubs over the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Friday for their third straight victory.

Bote got behind 0-2 before driving Raisel Iglesias' next pitch deep to left field with one out. The infielder hit a bottom-of-the-ninth, two-out grand slam that beat Washington 4-3 on Aug. 12.

Iglesias (2-2) had made seven straight scoreless appearances. Jesse Chavez (4-2), the sixth Cubs reliever, pitched a scoreless inning.

Daniel Murphy hit his first homer since being traded Tuesday from Washington to the NL Central-leading Cubs. Alec Mills pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his first major league start.

Cincinnati wasted a terrific start by Matt Harvey in its fourth loss in five games. Harvey struck out six in 5 1/3 innings after reportedly being claimed off waivers by Milwaukee. He stayed with the Reds when they couldn't work out a deal.

          RAYS 10, RED SOX 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Rookie Jalen Beeks beat his former team for the second time in six days as Tampa Bay topped Boston for its sixth straight win.

Beeks (3-1) was the minor league pitcher of the year for the Red Sox last season, and was traded to the Rays for Nathan Eovaldi on July 25. Beeks gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings against the club with the best record in the majors.

Willy Adames homered and Michael Perez drove in four runs. The Rays had six consecutive singles in the third against Hector Velazquez (7-2).

          MARLINS 1, BRAVES 0

MIAMI (AP) - Dan Straily combined with three relievers on a three-hitter and Miami snapped a seven-game losing streak against NL East-leading Atlanta.

Straily (5-6) allowed three hits in six innings. Dayron Guerrero and Drew Steckenrider worked the seventh and eighth, and Adam Conley pitched a perfect ninth for his first save in his second opportunity.

Mike Foltynewicz (10-8) retired the first 11 Marlins hitters until Brian Anderson's double to left-center in the fourth. Derek Dietrich followed with an RBI single.

          ROYALS 5, INDIANS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Ryan O'Hearn and Hunter Dozier hit back-to-back home runs leading off the ninth inning against Cleveland closer Cody Allen to lift Kansas City.

After a broken water pipe near the outfield fountains led to a half-hour delay in the fourth, the Royals and Indians put on a splashy finish.

Cleveland's Yonder Alonso hit his second homer of the game in the eighth, a two-run shot for a 4-3 lead. Alonso also had a solo shot in the fourth, moments before the right field warning track flooded.

O'Hearn and Dozier then rescued Kansas City from a sixth straight loss with their homers off Allen (4-5).

Allen has blown four saves this season and let his ERA rise to 4.50. Wily Peralta (1-0) got the victory for Kansas City, which had just been swept over four games by Tampa Bay.

          YANKEES 7, ORIOLES 5, 10 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Luke Voit connected in the 10th inning for his second home run of the game, and Zach Britton marked his return to Camden Yards by working the bottom half to preserve the New York Yankees' victory over Baltimore.

The Yankees made up two-run deficits in the fourth and eighth innings before Neil Walker homered off rookie Cody Carroll (0-2) in the 10th to give New York its first lead. Voit, acquired from St. Louis on July 28, added a two-run shot, capping his first career multihomer game.

Britton was traded by rebuilding Orioles on July 24. Working as the closer for the injured Aroldis Chapman, the left-hander gave up a home run to longtime teammate Chris Davis before securing his first save with New York.

Chad Green (7-2) pitched the ninth to help New York win for the 12th time in 17 games.

          ATHLETICS 7, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Matt Chapman hit a three-run homer, Sean Manaea pitched efficiently into the sixth inning and Oakland beat Minnesota.

Stephen Piscotty and Ramon Laureano each added a ninth-inning homer as the A's snapped a two-game skid, maintaining their hold on the AL's second wild card.

Manaea (12-9) recovered nicely from a rough outing against Houston last weekend. He yielded an unearned run, five hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Minnesota starter Jake Odorizzi (5-8) pitched seven innings for the first time this season after opening the year with 26 consecutive starts without an out in the seventh - the longest such streak in major league history. The Twins right-hander allowed one earned run, five hits and a walk.

          CARDINALS 7, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Miles Mikolas and Tyler O'Neill each homered to help St. Louis to an early lead that held up against Colorado.

The Rockies pulled within two runs with a five-run fifth that featured a two-run drive by Charlie Blackmon and a solo shot by Nolan Arenado, both off Mikolas, who helped St. Louis take a 7-0 lead by hitting a two-run homer as part of a four-run second.

Carlos Martinez (7-6) picked up the victory with 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief.

Bud Norris gave up a two-out double to Ryan McMahon and walked pinch-hitter Chris Iannetta before retiring D.J. LeMahieu on a fielder's choice for his 27th save in 31 opportunities.

• Saturday’s six-pack

It is never too late to be what you want to be:

                — At age 24, future author Stephen King was working as a janitor and living in a trailer.

                — At age 27, Vincent Van Gogh quit being a missionary and decided to go to art school.

                — At age 30, Harrison Ford was a carpenter.

                — Julia Child didn’t release her first cookbook until she was 39.

                — Samuel L Jackson didn’t get his first movie role until he was 46.

                — Grandma Moses didn’t begin her painting her career until she was 76.

                Quote of the Day
“They’re going to have nerds in the dugout. And I’ve said it: If [New York GM Brian] Cashman had any balls, he’d have done that a long time ago. Or he’d like to now. Put a nerd in uniform. Because anybody can manage today. There’s 100 pitches, and then you start parading your 10 relievers in.”
Former relief ace Goose Gossage, not a fan of the way baseball is run these days

                Friday’s quiz
Troy Aikman played college football at Oklahoma and UCLA.

Right now, David Fizdale is the head coach of the New York Knicks.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

                13) Cole Hamels’ last five starts with last place Texas: 1-3, 11.86.

Cole Hamels’ first five starts with the contending Cubs; 4-0, 1.06.

                Go figure.

                12) Browns’ QB Tyrod Taylor dislocated the pinky on his left hand Thursday night, but for some unknown reason, came back into the game later on. Not sure that was a smart thing to do.

                11) Speaking of which, Cam Newton scrambled against the Patriots Friday night, not only didn’t he slide, he dove head-first, got upended and landed on his left shoulder. He was OK, but whats the point of diving head-first and taking a hit?

New rule this year: if a QB dives-head-first, it gets treated just like he was sliding feet-first, it gets marked at the furthest point backwards where he touched the ground.

                10) If you look at Week 1 NFL games the last five years, under was 42-36-1 in those games.

I’m thinking that since starters play so little football in the summer and in exhibition games, teams aren’t going to be as sharp (or in as good condition) as later on in the season.

Last year, under was 11-4 in Week 1 games. Something to think about.

                9) Detroit Lions were only NFL team LY to have two WR’s catch passes for 1,000+ yards: Marvin Jones caught 61 passes for 1,101 yards, and Golden Tate caught 92 passes for 1,003 yards.

                8) Over last 14 years, only preseason #1 college football teams to win the national title that year were USC in 2004 and Alabama last season.

                7) Over last five years, best five college football teams against the spread:
                — Temple 40-21, 65.6%
                — Colorado State 37-23, 61.7%
                — Duke 36-23, 61.0%
                — Houston 35-24, 59.3%
                — Navy 35-24, 59.3%

                6) Home team lost eight of the last ten Cowboy-Eagle games.

                5) Cubs’ rookie infielder David Bote has five home runs this year; all five either tied the game or put the Cubs ahead- two of the homers were walk-offs.

                4) Xavier and Illinois basketball teams are both playing in the Maui Classic in November; the two teams are chartering a plane together, so they can get a bigger plane and have more room than if they flew commercial. Teams are on opposite sides of the bracket in the tournament.

                3) Former Xavier coach Chris Mack is now the Louisville coach; his non-conference schedule this season includes games with Tennessee, either Kansas/Marquette, Michigan State, at Seton Hall, at Indiana and Kentucky. They’ll be ready for ACC play.

                2) Indians-Royals game Friday night was delayed because the fountains behind the centerfield fence at Kauffman Stadium overflowed, flooding the warning track in part of the outfield.

                1) A wiseguy who lives near the Milwaukee airport painted “Welcome to Cleveland” on the roof of his business, apparently to confuse people flying into Milwaukee. Funny guy.

                  • LEADING OFF: Cubs ride clutch rookie, Fiers on fire
                    August 24, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                    GROWING BOTE OF WORK

Cubs rookie David Bote tries to keep his sensational rookie season rolling in a game against Cincinnati. Bote walked off Chicago with a 10th-inning homer Friday, his second game-ending shot this month. The 25-year-old didn't get much hype as a prospect, but he's finding the spotlight regularly in the majors, with each of his five home runs either tying the game or putting the Cubs ahead. That includes a ninth-inning grand slam for a 4-3 win over Washington on Aug. 12.

                    GOOD GET

Mike Fiers has given Oakland a major boost in its pursuit of the Astros in the AL West, a trend the right-hander will try to continue against Minnesota. Fiers is 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA, 21 strikeouts and one walk in three starts since being acquired from Detroit on Aug. 6, finding success with the A's by pitching up in the zone with his fastball more often. Oakland entered Friday 1 1/2 games behind Houston, and Fiers has a chance to help bump the Astros off the division lead a year after making 28 starts for the World Series champions.

                    DODGER KILLER

Justin Verlander is set to pitch against the Angels in Anaheim, though at least one Dodger fan has taken note that the Astros ace is in LA. Verlander, who started twice against the Dodgers in last year's World Series, got a surprise Friday while dining at the Beverly Hills Hotel when his bill included a $1 million item for ''Dodger Killer.''

''(hash)BeveryHillsHotel really making me pay for that World Series win,'' Verlander wrote on Twitter .

                    BACK, BUT WITH BAGGAGE

Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez is set to come off the DL against Philadelphia for his first start since a suitcase-related injury sidelined him in late June. Sanchez acknowledged Wednesday that the bruised right index finger that has kept him out for the past two months occurred when his finger got caught in a falling suitcase. The incident happened June 21, hours before Sanchez took the mound in Los Angeles against the Angels with about 180 friends and family from his hometown of Barstow, California, in the crowd. He pitched through the pain for an inning, then exited and ended up on the 60-day DL.

                    SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE

In a matchup between resurgent starting pitchers on a roll, Washington right-hander Tanner Roark (8-12, 4.05 ERA) faces Zack Wheeler (8-6, 3.63) and the Mets at Citi Field. Roark is 5-0 with a 1.63 ERA in his past six starts. Wheeler, who beat the Nationals at home on July 14, is 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last seven outings. He struck out a season-high 10 over seven innings last time out against San Francisco, but is 3-8 with a 4.79 ERA in 12 career starts vs. Washington.

                          Houston, No Problems

The Houston Astros continue their series on the road against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday, and RHP Justin Verlander will be opposed by RHP Jaime Barria. The Astros have been money when Verlander is on the bump, going 14-3 over his past 17 road outings, and 13-4 across the past 17 starts inside the division. In addition, Houston has really made a living picking on the dregs of the league, going 39-17 across their past 56 against teams with a losing overall record. They're also 18-5 over the past 23 road games against teams with a losing overall mark. Verlander seems to lose focus against losing sides, however, as Houston is 1-5 over his past six against teams with a losing overall record. The Astros are also 1-6 in the past seven against right-handed starting pitchers.

While those final two trends might give bettors some pause, the Halos have been a train wreck. The Angels have been dumped in four straight, including 9-3 in Friday's game in Anaheim. They are also 0-4 in their past four tries vs. RHP, and 1-4 in Barria's past five outings against divisional foes. They're 2-5 in the past seven overall against winning teams, too. Anaheim hasn't had a lot of success against the cream of the crop, either, winning just 16 of their past 51 contests against teams with a winning percentage of .600 or better. They're 1-6 in the past seven inside the division, while going 0-5 in their past five tries against the Astros when Verlander is on the bump.

As far as the total is concerned, the under is 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings overall, and 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings in Anaheim, too. The under has cashed in five straight starts by Verlander against the Halos. The under is 10-2-2 in the past 14 road games against a right-handed starting pitcher, but the over is 6-1 in Verlander's past seven against AL West clubs. The over is 4-1-1 in Houston's past six overall, too, including Friday's battle. The under is 7-3 in Barria's past 10 starts, and 5-2-1 in his past eight inside the division. However, the over is 5-1 in the past six home games vs. RHP.

                          Looking Ahead

                          Saturday, Aug. 25

It's a battle of southpaws Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park, as Rangers LHP Martin Perez and Giants LHP Andrew Suarez go toe-to-toe. San Francisco will be looking to avenge a loss on Friday, as Texas rallied for a late victory. Texas has posted a 5-1 record in their past six interleague road battles against left-handed starters, and they're 7-3 in their past 10 against NL West foes. In addition, they're 5-1 in Martin Perez's past six interleague starts and 5-0 in his past five against NL West clubs. While that's a pretty solid track record, Texas is just 1-7 over Perez's past eight outings overall, and 1-4 in his past five on the road. They're also a dismal 3-10 in his past 13 outings on the road against a team with a losing mark. The Giants haven't been much better lately, winning just three of their past 13 home games, two of their past nine overall and none of their past four at home against LHP. And they're 1-5 in Suarez's past six starts against losing sides. The under is 7-2-1 in the past 10 meetings between these sides, although the over hit on Friday.

The Indians rallied to take the lead late in Friday's game against the Royals, but the bullpen coughed up the win with a pair of homers allowed in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Cleveland bullpen was leakier than the fountains in right field at Kauffman Stadium. Cleveland is an overwhelming favorite in Saturday's game against Kansas City, and there is good reason. The Indians are 24-5 in Corey Kluber's past 29 starts against AL Central opponents, and 12-1 in his past 13 on the road against losing teams. They're also 23-8 in Klubot's past 31 overall on the road. The Royals are 1-6 in Heath Fillmyer's past seven outings. Friday's victory against a quality team was a rarity, too, as they're still just 5-24 in their past 29 at home against teams with a winning overall mark. They have also won just 12 of their past 60 against winning teams.

                          Weather Report

The weather looks outstanding on Saturday, and there are no problems spots as far as precipitation is concerned. In Detroit, the White Sox are Tigers will be battling winds from 10-13 mph blowing left to right. That's the only trouble spot as far as wind, too.

                          Sunday, Aug. 26

The Cardinals and Rockies cap off their series with a lefty-lefty matchup. St. Louis has torn it up against lefties lately, going 10-1 in their past 11 vs. LHP. They're also 5-2 in the past seven on the road against southpaws. They have been red hot with LHP Austin Gomber on the hill, too, going 5-0 in his past five overall, and 4-0 in his past four on the road. The Rox have been hot, too, winning 13 of their past 16 against southpaws, including 6-1 in their past seven at home vs. LHP. Colorado has been ice cold when LHP Tyler Anderson is on the hill, however, winning just two of his past 11 at home while dropping each of his past six starts overall.

It's also a southpaw battle at Chavez Ravine, as Padres LHP Robbie Erlin and Dodgers LHP Alex Wood go head-to-head. Erlin hasn't found a lot of success lately, and the Padres are 4-9 over his past 13 starts. They're also just 3-9 in his past 12 outings inside the division, and 1-4 in his past five against winning sides. San Diego is also just 6-21 in their past 27 against left-handed starting pitchers. For L.A., they're 10-3 in Wood's past 13 at home against teams with a losing record, and 17-7 overall in his past 24 against clubs with an overall losing mark. However, they have won just twice in the past seven starts by the lefty, and they're 0-4 in Wood's past four at Dodger Stadium. The under is 4-0 in Wood's past four starts, but the over is 5-2-1 in his past eight inside the division and a perfect 5-0 in his past five against the Padres.

The Yankees turn to ace RHP Luis Severino to try and cap off a winning series against the Orioles. Baltimore counters with RHP Dylan Bundy. The Yankees have posted a 15-3 record over Severino's past 18 outings against teams with a losing overall mark, and they're 11-3 in his past 14 games against AL East foes. They're also 8-3 in the past 11 road outings by Severino, and 38-15 in his past 53 starts overall. On the flip side, the O's are 0-4 in Bundy's past four starts, and they're just 3-15 in his past 18 inside the division. In addition, Baltimore is just 3-11 in Bundy's past 14 tries against teams with a winning overall record. Total bettors might want to hammer the 'over'. The over is 5-0 in Severino's past five against the O's, and 12-3-1 in the past 16 battles at Camden Yards. The over is 27-4-1 in the past 32 meetings overall in this series.
