  • LEADING OFF: Astros-Red Sox at Fenway, Dodgers visit Rockies
    September 7, 2018
    By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

    OCTOBER IN THE AIR

Two of the top teams in the majors meet at Fenway Park when Gerrit Cole (13-5, 2.86 ERA) and the Astros take on David Price (14-6, 3.60) and the Red Sox in the opener of a three-game set between AL division leaders. Houston beat Boston in the playoffs last year on the way to winning the World Series. Price bruised his left wrist when it was hit by a line drive in his last start Aug. 29 against Miami. The streaking Astros have won five straight behind slugger Alex Bregman, who has reached base safely in 33 consecutive games. Bregman, with four homers in his last five games, batted .486 with seven doubles, five homers and 17 RBIs on the 10-game homestand Houston just completed. He has an extra-base hit and an RBI in five straight games, the longest such streak for an Astros hitter since 2006.

    WILD, WILD WEST

Trevor Story and the first-place Rockies open a pivotal three-game series against the Dodgers at Coors Field with 1 1/2 games separating the NL West rivals. Colorado had a day off following Story's three-homer outburst in a 5-3 win over San Francisco on Wednesday, which gave the All-Star shortstop a career-best 31 homers for the season. He'll try to resume his powerful pace against resurgent ace Clayton Kershaw, who has a 2.14 ERA since the start of August. Los Angeles expects to be without All-Star closer Kenley Jansen after a team cardiologist recommended the right-hander not travel to Denver, where he's had heart issues in the past. Colorado has won five in a row.

    HOPE THEY BOTH LOSE

Oakland fans will be keeping an eye on Seattle, where the Yankees play the Mariners. The A's are 3 1/2 games back of New York for the top AL wild card, but the Mariners are 5 1/2 behind Oakland and really the only team with much of a chance to knock the Athletics out of the playoffs entirely. Masahiro Tanaka will face Mariners lefty James Paxton, while the A's send Chris Bassitt to the mound against the Rangers in Oakland. Tanaka (10-5, 3.83 ERA) is 6-0 with a 2.34 ERA in eight starts against the Mariners - and 3-0 with a 2.17 ERA at Safeco Field. Paxton (11-5, 3.74) returned from the disabled list last Saturday and struck out 10 in five innings to beat Oakland.

    ARMS RACE

Blake Snell (17-5, 2.02 ERA) tries to tie Cleveland ace Corey Kluber for the big league lead in wins when the All-Star lefty pitches for Tampa Bay at last-place Baltimore. Snell, the AL pitcher of the month for August, has won five consecutive starts. He and Kluber are top contenders for the AL Cy Young Award.

    SORRY, CHIEF

Chief Wahoo is missing from the Indians jersey sleeves this weekend during a four-game series at Toronto. The team nixed the logo for the Canadian trip, partially because of a failed legal challenge against Cleveland when it played in Toronto during the 2016 AL Championship Series. While the Indians played the Blue Jays, a lawsuit was filed to have the logo and team name banned from Canadian TV. A judge dismissed the case. The Indians have said they will permanently remove the logo from their uniforms next season, but Chief Wahoo will return to their sleeves when they play at Tampa Bay next week.

    HEY, JOE

Washington right-hander Joe Ross is set to make his season debut against the Cubs. Ross hasn't pitched in the majors since having Tommy John surgery in July 2017. The 25-year-old has a 3.95 ERA in 48 major league appearances (45 starts). He's made six minor league rehab starts, going 2-1 with a 2.39 ERA. With a few spots open in the 2019 rotation, Ross' performance could influence what the Nationals do this offseason.

        • Friday's Diamond Notes
          Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Astros (5-0 last five)

Houston and Boston are on a collision course to face each other for the right to capture the American League pennant. The Astros travel to Beantown on Friday for the start of a three-game series as Houston has caught fire over the last three weeks by winning 12 of its past 15 contests, including a home sweep of Minnesota this week. The pitching has come back to its usual form by allowing three runs or less in each of the past six games, while the lineup is healthy again with Jose Altuve, George Springer, and Carlos Correa all back from injury.

Since losing at Oakland on August 18 to fall into a first-place tie with the A’s, the Astros have posted a 6-1 road record in the past seven away from Minute Maid Park. Also, Houston has established some breathing room by owning a 3 ½ game lead over Oakland in the AL West heading into the weekend. It’s a battle of aces on the mound at Fenway Park in the opener as Houston’s Gerrit Cole opposes Boston southpaw David Price. Cole is winless in his past three road assignments, but beat the Red Sox at home on June 1 in a 7-3 triumph.

Coldest team: Giants (0-5 last five)

San Francisco went through the first six years of this decade winning the World Series in even years. However, the Giants came up short in 2016 and will be lucky to finish at .500 in 2018. The Giants travel to Miller Park after getting swept in a three-game set at Colorado to face a Brewers’ squad that beat San Francisco in three of four contests in the Bay Area in July. San Francisco has slumped on the road recently by going 2-9 in their last 11 games away from AT&T Park since taking two from the Dodgers as heavy underdogs in mid-August.

The Giants trot out Derek Holland in the series opener as the southpaw has allowed one earned run or less in four straight starts, while San Francisco has won three of his past four road outings. Holland didn’t face the Brewers in July, as the left-hander looks to extend his UNDER streak to five on Friday.

Hottest pitcher: Austin Gomber, Cardinals (5-0, 2.77 ERA)

The lone interleague matchup this weekend takes place in Detroit as the Cardinals visit the Tigers. St. Louis continues to roll after grabbing the final two games at Washington to win its sixth consecutive road series. The rookie Gomber has turned into a valuable call-up to this decimated St. Louis rotation as the left-hander is unbeaten in seven starts this season. St. Louis won all six of his August starts, while the former Florida Atlantic Owl yielded two runs or less in each of his past five outings.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Archer, Pirates (4-7, 4.56 ERA)

After Pittsburgh won the first two starts made by the former Tampa Bay right-hander, the Pirates are winless in Archer’s past four trips to the mound. Although three of those four starts came away from PNC Park, Archer has pitched past the fifth inning only once, which came in a 5-3 setback at Atlanta his last time out. Archer actually put together his best start with the Pirates against the Braves by scattering two hits and allowing one run in six innings, but the Pittsburgh bullpen allowed four late runs to prevent him from a win. The Pirates host the Marlins on Friday, as Pittsburgh is fresh off a three-game sweep of Cincinnati.

Biggest OVER run: Nationals (7-2 last nine)

The Cubs rallied to knock out the Nationals in last October’s NLDS, while Chicago pulled the same trick on Thursday night with a victory in 10 innings. Since getting shut out in three straight games in late August, Washington has scored at least four runs in 10 of the past 11 contests, but has also allowed four or more runs in seven of the last eight games. Runs should be at a premium on Saturday when Max Scherzer and Cole Hamels square off in D.C., but the Cubs are on a 6-1 OVER run in Jon Lester’s last seven starts. Most of that is due to great run support by Chicago, who has scored 23 runs in Lester’s past three outings, while facing Washington right-hander Joe Ross, who is making his season debut.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (11-1 last 12)

Arizona’s remarkable 11-game UNDER streak came to a halt in Thursday night's extra-innings loss against Atlanta. The major reason for this UNDER stretch has been a lack of offense for the D-backs, who went through eight consecutive games by scoring three runs or less prior to Tuesday’s 6-0 shutout of the Padres. Patrick Corbin heads to the mound on Friday for Arizona, as the D-backs are winless in his past two appearances. Corbin has allowed two earned runs or less in four of the previous five trips to the hill, but the southpaw gave up four earned runs in six innings of a 5-1 setback at Atlanta prior to the All-Star break.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Rockies

Following its three-game sweep of San Francisco, the Rockies are the newest leader of the NL West race with three weeks remaining. That distinction can either be cemented or disappear this weekend as the defending National League champion Dodgers invade Coors Field. Los Angeles took brief control of the division race after capturing three of four from Arizona last weekend, but the Dodgers slipped up against the Mets by losing two of three at Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers can trim the deficit to a half-game with a win on Friday as they send out their three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw to the mound. Kershaw is fresh off a pair of no-decisions in one-run wins over the Padres and D-backs, but the left-hander has yielded two earned runs or less in eight consecutive outings. Interestingly enough, Kershaw has managed to avoid the Rockies this season, as Los Angeles posted a 4-2 record against Colorado in his six starts in 2017.

The Rockies counter with Jon Gray as Colorado has put together an impressive 10-1 record in the right-hander’s last 11 starts since late June. Gray has pitched into the seventh inning in seven of his past nine trips to the mound, as he tossed 5.2 innings against the Dodgers at Coors Field on August 10 as the Rockies rallied for a 5-4 victory. Since Los Angeles swept Colorado in Denver in early June, the Rockies have won five of the past seven matchups between the NL West rivals.

Betcha didn’t know: Since sweeping the Astros in Houston last month, the Mariners have slumped to a 1-8 record in their past nine games off a victory. Seattle knocked off Baltimore on Wednesday, as the Mariners sit in this fade spot on Friday with the Yankees traveling to the Pacific Northwest. New York swept Seattle at home in June, but the Yankees have failed to win a series in their last three tries.

Biggest public favorite: Rays (-250) vs. Orioles

Biggest public underdog: Yankees (+100) at Mariners

Biggest line move: Rangers (+160 to +146) at Athletics

                    Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Kevin Gausman, Atlanta Braves (9-9, 3.78 ERA, $380)

It’s crazy what leaving Baltimore will do for someone. Gausman has solidified the Braves rotation in a big way since coming over at the trade deadline. The right-hander has pitched to an impressive 1.66 ERA, with a 0.87 WHIP and has limited opponents to a .240 on base percentage in six starts as a Brave.

Gausman and the NL East leading Braves continue and important series with the Diamondbacks tonight. Atlanta is currently a +143 road dog with a total of 7.5 facing off against Arizona’s Patrick Corbin.

                    Slumping:
Marco Estrada, Toronto Blue Jays (7-11, 5.43 ERA, $89)

The rebuild is all-systems go in Toronto and it’s feeling like veteran starter Marco Estrada realizes he won’t be around much longer. The right-hander has been roughed up for a 8.75 ERA and a 1.94 WHIP over his last five starts.

Those numbers probably won’t play well tonight against the Indians, who are currently -210 road faves with a total of 8.5.

                    Cleveland Rocks! (Toronto)

The Indians have feasted on Blue Jays pitching this season. In four games against Toronto this season Cleveland has plated 9.2 runs per game. And did we mention the Marco Estrada stats above? Throw in a Jays bullpen that is wildly inconsistent and the Tribe can easily go over their 5.5 team total for this game.

                    ALCS Preview?

The Houston Astros travel to Fenway Park to visit the Boston Red Sox for a three-game weekend set in what could be a preview of this year’s American League Championship series and the opener gives us the best potential pitching matchup of the series as Gerrit Cole toes the rubber against David Price.

Cole has been great in his first season in Houston, pitching to a 2.86 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP, while this has been the best Price has looked as a member of the Red Sox, pitching to a 1.94 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in his last eight starts.

While both teams feature great lineups, we’re firm believes here that great pitching beats great hitting, especially in a postseason atmosphere. Look hard at the Under 4.5 (-105) First Five Innings here.

                    Windy City

Chicago will live up to its moniker tonight as the White Sox host the Angels on the South Side. It will be the pitcher’s who will be given a hand as there will be a 15-18 mile per hour wind gusting in from center field for the contest.

Not that White Sox starter Carlos Rodon needs a hand at Guaranteed Rate Field, where he owns an ERA of 2.23 and a 0.89 WHIP. The Under 8.5 isn’t a bad play.

                    • Hoskins homers in 8th to break tie, Phillies beat Mets 4-3
                      September 7, 2018
                      By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Carlos Correa hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and the Houston Astros won their sixth straight game, beating the Boston Red Sox 6-3 on Friday night in a matchup of AL division leaders.

The Red Sox, with the best record in the majors, had won three in row.

Boston starter David Price had allowed just one hit and retired 14 in a row when he went into the seventh with a 2-0 lead. He left after Alex Bregman's double and a walk and, after Ryan Brasier took over, the Astros scored three times. J.D. Martinez tied it with a single for his second RBI of the game.

Houston scored three times in the eighth. Correa put the AL Central leaders ahead, a wild pitch by Joe Kelly (4-2) scored another run and Tyler White added an RBI single.

Ryan Pressly (2-1) got two outs and Roberto Osuna posted his 14th save.

Xander Bogaerts hit his 20th home run for Boston.

                      ANGELS 5, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Two-way star Shohei Ohtani homered for the third straight game after learning he will probably need Tommy John surgery, launching a three-run shot to cap Los Angeles' four-run third inning against Chicago.

Shut down as a pitcher because of the right elbow problem, Ohtani hit his 19th homer of the season to break a tie with Kenji Johjima for the most by a Japanese rookie in the majors.

Ohtani, in the lineup as the designated hitter, has four homers in his last three games. Before the game against the White Sox, Ohtani said he plans to finish the season as the DH and hasn't decided yet if he'll have Tommy John surgery.

Andrelton Simmons added a solo shot in the seventh, and Felix Pena pitched seven strong innings to help the Angels win for the third time in their last four. Pena (2-4) allowed two runs while scattering seven hits and walking none. The righty fanned six.

Avisail Garcia hit a solo shot as Chicago's DH after missing four games with a sore right knee. Omar Narvaez drove in a run with a single. Chicago's Carlos Rodon (6-5) lasted just 4 2/3 innings.

                      PHILLIES 4, METS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to make a winner of Aaron Nola, and Philadelphia beat New York.

Carlos Santana lined an early two-run shot for the Phillies, who began the day trailing Atlanta by 3 1/2 games in the NL East. The first-place Braves played later at Arizona.

Nola (16-4) struck out eight over seven innings to match Washington ace Max Scherzer for the National League lead in wins. Those two are in a tight race with Mets star Jacob deGrom for the NL Cy Young Award, and Nola helped his cause with deGrom sitting in the opposite dugout.

The right-hander walked one and gave up three hits, including Dominic Smith's tying homer in the seventh. Hoskins connected off Tyler Bashlor (0-3), leading off the eighth for his 28th home run.

Seranthony Dominguez worked a perfect inning and Tommy Hunter got three straight outs for his fourth save as Philadelphia's bullpen made quick work of the Mets at the end.

                      RAYS 14, ORIOLES 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell tied the major league victory lead with his 18th, Nick Ciuffo and Kevin Kiermaier hit early three-run homers and Tampa Bay beat Baltimore.

Snell (18-5) matched Cleveland's Corey Kluber for the major league lead, after allowing two runs, five hits and striking out nine over 5 1/3 innings.

Tommy Pham had a fifth-inning solo homer and Ji-Man Choi hit a grand slam in the sixth to help the Rays run their home winning streak to nine. Tampa Bay has won 14 of 17 overall.

Baltimore dropped to 41-100, the third 100-loss season since the team relocated from St. Louis following the 1953 season. Dylan Bundy (7-14) was the loser.

                      BLUE JAYS 3, INDIANS 2, 11 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Kevin Pillar hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 11th after AL MVP contender Jose Ramirez grounded out with the bases loaded in the top of the inning, allowing Toronto to beat Cleveland.

Pillar's second career walkoff home run came off right-hander Adam Cimber (3-6). It was Pillar's 12th homer of the season. Pillar had reached third base with two outs in the ninth, but Neil Ramirez sent the game to extra innings by getting Richard Urena to fly out.

Yan Gomes hit a solo home run for the Indians, who entered with a magic number of seven to clinch their third straight AL Central title. Cleveland loaded the bases with two outs in the 11th, but Danny Barnes (3-2) relieved Jake Petricka and got Ramirez to ground out to second base.

Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco matched a season best by striking out 14 over eight innings.

                      BREWERS 4, GIANTS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jesus Aguilar hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to lead Milwaukee past San Francisco.

Aguilar sent a low, 0-1 pitch from Tony Watson into the gap in right-center field to score Curtis Granderson and Eric Thames. Hunter Strickland (3-5) started the seventh and walked the pinch-hitters. Watson took over one out later.

The Brewers pushed their wild-card lead to 1 1/2 games over St. Louis.

Josh Hader (5-1) worked two innings of scoreless relief and picked up the win. Joakim Soria pitched a perfect eighth, and Jeremy Jeffress handled the ninth, earning his ninth save.

                      TIGERS 5, CARDINALS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Jeimer Candelario hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth inning, lifting Detroit over St. Louis.

The Tigers won their third in a row. Marcell Ozuna homered twice for St. Louis, which has lost four of six. The Cardinals hold a slim lead for the second NL wild-card spot.

Rookie Victor Reyes singled off Jordan Hicks (3-4) with one out and Candelario followed with a drive into the Tigers' bullpen in left. Detroit closer Shane Greene (3-6) worked a scoreless ninth.

                      PIRATES 5, MARLINS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordan Luplow hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning, Josh Bell also had a two-run shot and Pittsburgh rallied past Miami.

Kevin Kramer drove in his first career run with a two-out single in the seventh that made it 3-3. Luplow then squared up a 1-2 offering from reliever Tayron Guerrero (1-3) for his third homer. Kramer got his first major league hit earlier in the game while making his first big league start.

Richard Rodriguez (4-2) pitched scoreless inning. Felipe Vazquez worked the ninth for his 31st save.

Lewis Brinson hit a three-run home run to put Miami ahead in the sixth, his 11th. He also doubled and finished 3 for 4.

                      TWINS 10, ROYALS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eddie Rosario homered, Ehire Adrianza had three hits and three RBIs and Minnesota beat Kansas City to snap a five-game skid.

Trevor May (4-1), one of six Minnesota relievers, picked up the win with two shutout innings.

Salvador Perez homered and Jorge Bonifacio had three hits for the Royals.

Minnesota broke a 6-6 tie with a three-run fifth. Max Kepler and Adrianza had RBI singles against Glenn Sparkman (0-3). Rosario tacked on his team-leading 23rd home run leading off the eighth.

                      REDS 12, PADRES 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Scott Schebler's grand slam set a Reds season record, and Phillip Ervin homered twice as Cincinnati pulled away to a rain-delayed victory over San Diego.

Schebler connected off Rowan Wick in the sixth for Cincinnati's 10th grand slam of the season, setting a club record and putting the Reds up 10-4. Ervin had a solo homer and a two-run shot, the first multi-homer game of his career. The start was delayed by 2 hours, 37 minutes because of rain.

Michael Lorenzen (3-1) was the winner, and Matt Strahm (3-4) took the loss.

                      DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Clayton Kershaw threw six strong innings, Kenta Maeda finished the ninth in place of All-Star closer Kenley Jansen as Los Angeles moved within a half-game of NL West-leading Colorado.

Kershaw (7-5) baffled the Rockies and allowed two runs and six hits. Yasiel Puig homered and had an RBI single for the Dodgers.

Jansen didn't make the trip after a team cardiologist recommended he not pitch at altitude after suffering an irregular heartbeat episode in Denver last month.

Chris Rusin (2-3) took the loss for the Rockies, who had their five-game winning streak halted.

                      YANKEES 4, MARINERS 0

Masahiro Tanaka struck out 10 in eight innings, and Gleyber Torres and Andrew McCutchen each hit a two-run homer as New York handed Seattle its fifth shutout of the season.

Tanaka (11-5) allowed three hits and no walks. He is 7-0 against the Mariners in his career and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts.

McCutchen's two-run shot in the third was his first homer as a Yankee since coming over in the trade with the Giants. Torres hit a two run-homer, the rookie's 23rd.

James Paxton (11-6) took the loss and every Seattle starter struck out at least once.

                        • Saturday’s six-pack

                          — Bad news for the White Sox: Michael Kopech needs Tommy John surgery.

                          — Julio Jones was targeted 19 times by Matt Ryan Thursday night.

                          — Average number of points in NFL games LY: 43.4, a four-year low.

                          — Since 2010, rookie NFL QB’s making their first career road start are 15-30.

                          — Three NFL teams have started a season 0-2 and went on to win the Super Bowl: ’92 Cowboys, ’01 Patriots and ’07 Giants.

                          — Pointspreads were invented in the early 40’s by math teacher-turned-bookmaker Charles McNeil.

                          Quote of the Day
“I played for a tough sucker, and I was afraid of him, and we played our ass off for him because we feared him. I don’t see that with this guy. He’s chest bumping and all that. I’m the head of the corporation, I’m the CEO, I’m the chairman of the board, I’m talking to the stockholders telling them here’s how we’re going to do at the end of the quarter. I’m selling this thing. And I’m not delivering the goods, which is championships. You’ve got to face the criticism. I’m sorry, but he’s not my kind of coach. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again.”
Terry Bradshaw, talking about Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin

                          Saturday’s quiz
Who won the first Super Bowl, and who did they beat?

                          Friday’s quiz
In the football scenes in The Longest Yard, Burt Reynolds’ character Paul Crewe wore number 22, one of the numbers he wore as a running back at Florida State.

                          Thursday’s quiz
Martin Sheen played President Bartlet in the old TV show, The West Wing.

Saturday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend…….

                          13) Chiefs were +45 in turnovers the last three years, in large part because Alex Smith doesn’t turn the ball over very much, but now Smith plays for the Redskins and Patrick Mahomes is the starter, with only one NFL start under his belt.

Chiefs @ Chargers might be the most interesting matchup in NFL’s Week 1.

                          12) Kansas State had to rally from down 24-12 in 4th quarter vs I-AA South Dakota LW, now they’re a home underdog to Mississippi State. K-State has traditionally been profitable as a home underdog under Bill Snyder- interesting noon game.

                          11) Bills made the playoffs for the first time in 19 years LY, then traded their QB away and drafted Josh Allen, who isn’t the starter yet. Buffalo has the lowest over/under win total in Las Vegas for this season- there are low expectations for their opener in Baltimore.

                          10) Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic squad was pummeled by Oklahoma LW; now they’re a home favorite against Air Force and its option attack— how will the Owls bounce back?

                          9) Tyrod Taylor is that QB Buffalo traded away; he’s the starter in Cleveland now— the Browns have been bet down by the public. Steelers opened at -7; now they’re -4. Cleveland turned the ball over 41 times LY; if Taylor can cut that number in half, Browns will be a vastly improved team this season.

                          8) Chip Kelly’s UCLA team lost as a 14-point home favorite last week; now they’re a 30-point underdog at Oklahoma. Plus, UCLA’s QB got hurt LW; thats no bueno.

                          7) Sportsbooks in New Jersey are taking lot of Super Bowl bets on the Giants, so their opener with Jacksonville will be interesting.

Jaguars are 3-17 vs spread in their last 20 games vs NFC teams, but they made the playoffs LY, while the Giants were going 3-13.

                          6) Detroit Tigers’ two TV announcers apparently got into a fight after Tuesday night’s game and were not on the air for Wednesday’s game. Imagine if that had happened during the game? Will these guys ever work together again? They might’ve ruined both of their careers.

                          5) Jets’ rookie Sam Darnold will become the youngest player in Super Bowl era to start at QB in a Week 1 game. New Lions’ coach Matt Patricia went to college at RPI, near where I live, in Troy, NY. Patricia’s defenses in New England stopped the Jets; how will his Detroit defense do?

                          4) USC at Stanford is an interesting game in the Pac-12; Trojans are starting a true freshman QB who left high school a year early, so he should really still be in HS. Awful young to be a starter.

                          3) Jameis Winston is suspended for the first three games this season, so the Buccaneers head to New Orleans with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starting QB. Biggest spread of Week 1; can the Bucs hang with their division rival with their backup QB starting?

                          2) Herm Edwards started his Arizona State tenure with a 49-7 win over Texas-San Antonio (the Roadrunners!!!) last week; now Michigan State is coming to town. Big jump in class.

Supposed to be 107 in Tempe Saturday night; will conditioning be a factor?

                          1) Norv Turner is Carolina’s new offensive coordinator; Turner coaching Cam Newton’s offense promises to be fascinating. Having the Cowboys in town for the opener and the 4:25 FOX game adds to the build-up.

                          Enjoy the games this weekend!!!!

                          • LEADING OFF: Ohtani slugging away with bad elbow, Gio debut
                            September 7, 2018
                            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                            THE SHO GOES ON

Shohei Ohtani doesn't need two good elbows to help the Angels. Doctors this week recommended the two-way rookie sensation have Tommy John surgery on his right pitching elbow, but Ohtani has been crushing it at the plate, hitting four homers in his past three games. Ohtani has 19 home runs and leads all rookies with a .579 slugging percentage, and he says he'll keep hitting through the end of the season before deciding whether to have surgery that would keep him off the mound until 2020. The Angels will face White Sox veteran James Shields.

                            NEW BREW

Gio Gonzalez is set to make his first start with the Brewers against the Giants. The left-hander was acquired from the Nationals a week ago. He had lost three of his final four starts with Washington while posting an 8.71 ERA, but Milwaukee is hoping he can help the team's postseason push.

                            BUCK UP

Clay Buchholz's resurgent season keeps getting better, a trend Arizona hopes he extends against Atlanta. The 34-year-old right-hander is 7-2 with a 2.05 ERA, including 2-0 with an 0.64 ERA in his past four starts. The Diamondbacks are trying to close ground on the Rockies and Dodgers in the NL West, a tough task with the NL East-leading Braves in town. Atlanta is set to pitch right-hander Julio Teheran (9-7, 4.05).

                            RIGHT DECISION

Mets third baseman David Wright is scheduled to participate in a simulated game at Citi Field, his next step as he tries to make a major league comeback from neck, back and shoulder injuries. The 35-year-old team captain hasn't played in the big leagues since May 2016. He batted a combined .171 (7 for 41) with one double in 10 games for Class A St. Lucie and two with Triple-A Las Vegas last month before his rehab assignment expired on the final day of August.

                            PITCHING PIGSKINS

David Hess is set to start for the Orioles, a day after he was hit in the eye while playing catch with a football at Tropicana Field. It's a normal sight across the majors to see pitchers doing running work involving football passes before batting practice. A specialist examined Hess' left eye, and he was back in the Baltimore dugout Friday - wearing an LSU football helmet.
