    • Friday’s 6-pack

      — Utah Valley coach Mark Pope signed a 2-year deal to stay with the Wolverines.

      — In their last eight home games, Mets are 1-32 with men in scoring position.

      — Patriots’ WR Julian Edelman is getting a 4-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs.

      — Patriots play Detroit in Week 3, by the way. Lions are now coached by Matt Patricia, who has been the New England defensive coordinator the last few years.

      — Charles Barkley got to ride in the Goodyear Blimp Thursday.

      — In their last 10 games, Dodger starting pitchers threw 35 innings, relievers 54.

      Quote of the Day
“TO is making a mistake. This is the greatest individual honor a football player can achieve. Many of the greatest players of all time have had to wait their turn. They have then accepted with humility and class. It’s not about how you got there, it’s that you made it.”
Tedy Bruschi, talking about Terrell Owens skipping his Hall of Fame enshrinement

      Friday’s quiz
Where did Terrell Owens play college football?

      Thursday’s quiz
Roy Hobbs played for the New York Knights in The Natural.

      Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, Kevin Costner played the GM of the Cleveland Browns.

      **************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

      13) When Kevin Durant moved from the Thunder to Golden State as a free agent, he ruined the NBA playoffs. At least for a while.

Competitive balance is what makes sports interesting to watch; it is why the NFL is so damn popular, any team can win from year to year. The NBA is sorely lacking that right now- the same two teams met in the finals the last four years. No bueno.

      12) Durant bolted a very strong Oklahoma City team that led Golden State 3-1 in Western finals two years ago; since then, the Warriors are 31-6 in NBA playoff games. 31 wins, 6 losses.

How the hell is a team supposed to beat Golden State four out of seven now when they’re 31-6 against the whole league when it counts the most? Houston came close this year, but it seems like the only way Golden State won’t keep winning titles is if they get a ton of injuries.

      11) In their Game 3 win over Cleveland, the Warriors took 26 3-pointers, 44 shots in the paint, and only 11 2-point shots outside the paint.

Analytics people are pretty adamant about not taking 2-point shots outside the paint, but no matter where you shoot from, you still have to have guys who make those shots.

      10) You can bet on just about anything, including teams in each quarter. In their last 20 games, Golden State Warriors are 15-5 vs spread in 3rd quarter.

      9) 76ers and Bryan Colangelo “parted ways”, a nice way of saying they told hm to take a hike over Colangelo’s wife having burner Twitter accounts that criticized people, disclosed medical information that she obviously got from her husband.

It is unclear whether Colangelo knew that his wife was doing this. Doesn’t matter now.

      8) Some things are so weird you couldn’t possibly make them up. Terrell Owens informed the Pro Football Hall of Fame he won’t attend his own induction ceremony in August, apparently because he is annoyed that he wasn’t voted in until his third year of eligibility. Oy.

      7) Las Vegas Bowl ended its association with the Mountain West, starting in 2020, when the new Las Vegas domed stadium opens. From 2020 on, a Pac-12 team will play another power-5 team in the Las Vegas Bowl.

      6) There was a cool article in the New York Times Thursday on Sammy Gelfand, the Warriors’ 31-year old analytics guy who has worked his way up from an internship with a sports agents’ firm to a member of the Golden State front office.

The guy is my hero, and I mean that. Hope he is enjoying the experience.

      5) JT Realmuto doubled twice, hit a triple Wednesday, and was also hit by two pitches, which makes him the first player in the live-ball era, for any team, to have three extra-base hits and two hit-by-pitches in the same game.

      4) Shohei Ohtani left Wednesday night’s game with Kansas City with a blister problem; Angels are playing well this year, but Ohtani has started only nine games, thrown around 50 innings.

      3) Former Indiana/UAB coach Mike Davis is the new coach at Detroit Mercy; he had been at Texas Southern the last seven years. Now at least he can play some home games before conference play starts- at Texas Southern, all his non-league games were on the road.

      2) They told an interesting story on the Rockies game Wednesday about Colorado pitching coach Steve Foster; in 1993, Foster was doing well pitching for the Reds- he was 26, and was a guest on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show in LA, where he threw some balls at milk bottles, like you would at the county fair. No big deal.

Foster pitched against the Dodgers that night, did well, but when he woke up the next day, his arm hurt badly and he never pitched again. He denies the Tonight Show caused any injury, and now he is a major league pitching coach. Go figure.

1— RIP Red Schoendienst, 95, a Hall of Famer who played/managed the Cardinals. He was 95 years old. People in St Louis referred to him as “Mr Cardinal” which is something when you realize that Stan Musial and Bob Gibson were also Cardinals.

Boatload Of Good MLB Teams On The Road This Weekend

If you are looking for road teams to back as winners this weekend, you've really got to look no further than the MLB schedule. Teams like Milwaukee (at Philly), Cleveland (at Detroit), Seattle (at Tampa Bay), St. Louis (at Cincinnati), Yankees (at Mets), Houston (at Texas), L.A. Angels (at Minnesota), and Atlanta (at L.A. Dodgers) are all viable candidates to win their weekend series' against their respective opponents. That's a huge list of road sides that will see plenty of support overall this weekend. Yet, it's still important to pick your spots with these teams and how you do that could be based on a lot of things. For example, Atlanta is a team that I believe will be coming back down to earth soon so avoiding them against the Dodgers is probably the path I'll take, and the Houston/Texas series could be a dicey one backing Houston with it being an intense division rivalry and all.

But I'd look for the surging Mariners to take care of business with at least a series win in Tampa, and the same could be said for the Cleveland Indians in Detroit, and the Angels in Minnesota. The Subway Series between the Yankees and Mets will garner plenty of headlines, but the Yankees should win more then they lose there, but decisions on whether or not to back the visiting Yankees there should more be based on the ML odds that come out.

The most intriguing visiting team to bet on this week may in fact be the Milwaukee Brewers though. The Brewers find themselves in 1st place in the NL Central with a 37-25 SU record and they'll probably be plus-money underdogs almost all weekend. The Phillies are a team that may fall back soon like I believe Atlanta will, as both could be classified in the group of young rebuilding teams getting too much success too fast.

The Brewers have surprised many as well with their play this year, but they've still been one of the best teams to bet on all year (3rd in money won as $100 bet on Milwaukee every game would be up $1260) and those numbers should only grow this weekend.

              • LEADING OFF: Subway Series begins, Cubs still talking slides
                June 8, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                7 TRAIN GAMES

The Yankees and Mets open a three-game Subway Series at Citi Field. Jacob deGrom has been stellar for the Mets, but New York hasn't been so great in return. DeGrom has a 0.99 ERA over his past nine starts, and yet the Mets are 2-7 in those games. The Yankees, meanwhile, have won seven of eight and are a half-game back of Boston in the AL East with Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 4.79) set to start.

                SENSITIVE STUFF

The Chicago Cubs are still seeking clarity on rules regarding catchers blocking home plate, even after a potentially prickly call went their way. Anthony Rizzo was credited with a sacrifice fly Thursday after a video review determined Phillies catcher Andrew Knapp had illegally blocked the plate with his left leg as Albert Almora Jr. tried to score from third. Almora beat Dylan Cozen's strong throw from left field, but was unable to touch the plate with Knapp in the way. Almora initially was called out before the play was overruled.

''It's a sensitive subject,'' said Rizzo, who upended Pirates catcher Elias Diaz on a disputed play at the plate at Pittsburgh on Memorial Day, but wasn't called for interference on the field. ''In my opinion, a lot more need to be overturned so guys have a better lane to slide.''

                INNINGS NEEDED

Walker Buehler hopes to give the Dodgers' besieged bullpen a breather in a game against Atlanta. Manager Dave Roberts has gone to the bullpen 16 times in the past two games, including when spot starter Dennis Santana was scratched minutes before first pitch Thursday. Los Angeles used nine relievers in the 8-7 win over Pittsburgh barely 12 hours after spot starter Caleb Ferguson was pulled following 1 2/3 innings. Still, LA has won 15 of 20 games heading into their series against the Braves.

                CAREFUL WITH CORREA

Houston is planning to be conservative with star shortstop Carlos Correa after he left a game Wednesday with discomfort in his right side. An MRI on Thursday came back negative, but Correa was still held out of the lineup against Texas and may sit again as they continue the series. Manager A.J. Hinch said the team would know more about Correa's timeline once he swings a bat again, which should happen at some point over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Astros will send major league ERA-leader Justin Verlander (7-2, 1.24) out against the Rangers' Doug Fister.

                ON SALE

Chris Sale (5-3, 3.00) faces a few old friends when the Red Sox open a series against the White Sox at Fenway Park. Sale has won four straight decisions and ranks second in the AL with 110 strikeouts. Boston's Andrew Benintendi has homered in four of his past five games. On Thursday, he became the first Red Sox player other than Mookie Betts to hit a leadoff home run since Brock Holt in 2014. Dylan Covey (1-1, 2.82) starts for Chicago.

Hottest team: Padres (7-2 last nine)

San Diego is currently the best last place team in baseball at 29-35, while sitting only 4 ½ games out of first place in the National League West. The Padres won seven of the final nine contests on its 10-game homestand, including three victories over the Marlins. San Diego heads to the east coast to face Miami for a three-game weekend set, but the Padres have lost 11 of their last 12 series openers.

The Padres have taken care of their business at home recently by winning 10 of the last 14 games at Petco Park, while not losing a home series since early May. However, San Diego needs to get its road record on track as the Padres are 2-4 in their last six away from Petco Park since winning three straight games at Pittsburgh in late May. In Friday’s opener at Miami, Eric Lauer takes the mound for the Padres, looking for not only his first road win of the season, but also a better outing against the Marlins after allowing five runs in 2.1 innings of a 7-2 loss to the Fish on May 28.

Coldest team: Phillies (3-7 last 10)

Philadelphia returns to Citizens Bank Park after stumbling on its 10-game road trip against Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. Granted, the competition was tough, but after splitting a four-game series with the Dodgers, the Phillies scratched across one run in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Giants. The Phillies rebounded with a 6-1 blowout of the Cubs on Tuesday as nearly +200 underdogs, but lost on a walk-off grand slam on Wednesday, then dropped a 4-3 decision in the rubber match at Wrigley Field.

The Phillies travel back to the City of Brotherly Love to welcome in another solid opponent, the NL Central-leading Brewers. Vince Velasquez is winless in his last three starts for Philadelphia in spite of allowing four earned runs and striking out 24 batters in 16.1 innings of work. Milwaukee is looking to end a three-game slide as the Brewers have scored only four runs in their last 27 innings.

Hottest pitcher: Frankie Montas, Athletics (2-0, 0.64 ERA)

Only two starts into his Oakland tenure, Montas has dominated by yielding 10 hits and one run in 14 innings of work as the A’s have knocked off the Diamondbacks and Royals. The Dominican-born right-hander tossed eight innings in a 16-0 shutout of Kansas City last Friday as he squares off with the Royals again tonight. Oakland looks to improves on a 4-9 record in its past 13 home contests, as Montas is the only A’s starter currently on a two-game winning streak.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Harvey, Reds (1-4, 5.79 ERA)

It’s been a rough season for the former Mets’ standout, who was dealt to Cincinnati in May after failing to win a start in four outings. Harvey wasn’t terrible when he initially took the mound for the Reds, allowing four earned runs in 14 innings as Cincinnati posted a 3-0 record. However, the Dark Knight has gone backwards of late by getting tagged for nine runs in his last 10.1 innings of work in road losses at Colorado and San Diego. Harvey and the Reds host the Cardinals, as St. Louis has put together a perfect 7-0 record against its division rivals this season.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (7-0-1 last eight)

Colorado returns home after failing to pull off the road sweep of Cincinnati after Thursday’s 7-5 walk-off loss in 13 innings. The Rockies’ offense continues to perform well by averaging 6.8 runs over the last 10 games, but the pitching has allowed an average of 8.0 runs in the past seven contests. Colorado hosts Arizona in a critical NL West showdown this weekend as right-hander German Marquez takes the mound in the opener. Marquez has struggled at Coors Field this season by compiling a 7.22 ERA, but the Rockies are 6-1 to the UNDER in his past seven starts against the Diamondbacks.

Biggest UNDER run: Mets (12-6 last 18)

This homestand (and recent month) has been an absolute disaster for the Mets following a promising start. Through six games against the Cubs and Orioles at Citi Field, the Mets have plated a total of seven runs, while losing all six contests. The pitching has been alright over the last three games by yielding five runs, but there is no update on when the offense will get going. Guess who’s coming to town tonight? The big, bad Yankees for three games as Masahiro Tanaka takes the mound opposite Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom. Tanaka has received nearly seven runs of support during his starts this season, while the Yankees have won each of his last seven outings. deGrom has seen the UNDER cash in seven of his last eight starts, but the Mets have scored three runs or less in six of his previous seven outings.

Matchup to watch: Braves vs. Dodgers

Atlanta remains on the west coast after dropping two of three games to streaking San Diego as the Braves travel to Los Angeles. The Dodgers are back at Chavez Ravine following a solid 5-1 road swing at Colorado and Pittsburgh, while scoring at least five runs in all six contests. Los Angeles enters this weekend right in the thick of the NL West race at 31-31, recovering from a 16-26 hole on May 16.

Walker Buehler heads to the mound for the Dodgers in the opener as Los Angeles has five of eight starts made by the right-hander this season. Buehler has been especially effective at Dodger Stadium by compiling a 1.44 home ERA, but the Dodgers have scored two runs or less in three of his four home outings. Los Angeles needs to pick things up at home by going 7-11 in its past 18 home contests dating back to late April.

Brandon McCarthy counters for Atlanta, as the righty is fresh off a pair of no-decisions in home losses to the Mets and Nationals. The former Dodger has given up two earned runs or less in three of his last four outings, while the Braves have won four of McCarthy’s six starts away from SunTrust Park this season. Atlanta has done a nice job of bouncing back off a loss recently by winning five straight off a defeat. Last season, the Braves captured the first two meetings over the Dodgers as heavy underdogs prior to Los Angeles winning four of the final five matchups.

Betcha didn’t know: The Angels have caught fire of late by winning four straight games, as Los Angeles hits the road to face Minnesota. The Halos have had their issues in road series openers by losing four straight Game 1’s away from Anaheim, while scoring three runs or less in all four losses.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-300) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Diamondbacks (+100) at Rockies

Biggest line move: Marlins (-130 to -140) vs. Padres

                        • Yanks top Mets to open Subway Series
                          June 8, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Brett Gardner hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Jacob deGrom on an eighth-inning changeup, and the New York Yankees beat the reeling Mets 4-1 Friday night in the Subway Series opener after losing Masahiro Tanaka to hamstring problems when the pitcher sprinted home to score his first major league run.

Tanaka allowed one hit, a home run into the second deck in right by Brandon Nimmo on his second pitch. The 29-year-old right-hander scored standing up on Aaron Judge's sacrifice fly, then was replaced before the bottom of the sixth. The Yankees said Tanaka had tightness in both hamstrings, and the team expects to know more Saturday.

Gardner's home run, his fifth this season and fourth in his last 21 games, went just over the wall in right-center and followed Gleyber Torres' second single off deGrom (4-1). Giancarlo Stanton added a ninth-inning homer off Paul Sewald, his 22nd at Citi Field - the most among visiting players.

Jonathan Holder, Chad Green (4-0), Dellin Betances each pitched an inning, and Aroldis Chapman finished the four-hitter for his 16th save in 17 chances.

                          GIANTS 9, NATIONALS 5

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasberg exited after two innings because of tightness in his right shoulder, and San Francisco had eight extra-base hits.

Strasburg (6-6) gave up three runs and five hits. He was scheduled for an MRI on Saturday.

Andrew McCutchen and Gorkys Hernandez homered for San Francisco.

Reyes Moronta (2-0) got two outs for the win.

                          INDIANS 4, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Jason Kipnis hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the ninth inning to lead Cleveland past Detroit.

Jose Ramirez almost broke the tie earlier in the ninth, hitting Shane Greene's 3-1 pitch just past the foul pole down the right-field line, but ended up drawing a walk. Yonder Alonso singled with two outs.

Kipnis connected off Greene (2-3) for a drive over the right-center field scoreboard for his fourth homer of the season.

Trevor Bauer (5-4) struck out 12 in eight innings, giving up one run and seven hits. He has fanned 37 in 21 innings over his last three starts.

Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his 12th save.

                          CUBS 3, PIRATES 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant had three hits and scored a run while batting leadoff for the first time in his career, Ian Happ made a spectacular diving catch near the left-field corner to end the game and surging Chicago beat slumping Pittsburgh.

Bryant singled in his first three at-bats and scored in a two-run first inning, helping the Cubs win for the 10th time in 12 games.

Ian Happ sprawled out to grab Josh Harrison's drive toward the corner against Pedro Strop with a runner on third and two out in the ninth. He also possibly saved a run in the third when he made a tumbling catch on Corey Dickerson's shallow fly with runners on first and second. Happ made another neat grab in the sixth when he raced back and lunged to snag Colin Moran's smash.

Mike Montgomery (2-1) went six innings, giving up one run and seven hits, in his third start with Yu Darvish on the disabled list because of right triceps tendinitis. The Pirates lost for the 10th time in 13 games, with Chad Kuhl (4-4) once again coming up short. Pedro Strop got his first save in two chances.

WHITE SOX 1, RED SOX 0

BOSTON (AP) - Trayce Thompson had an RBI single in the seventh inning off Chris Sale, Dylan Covey pitched six innings as part of a three-hitter and Chicago beat Boston.

Kevan Smith had two hits and scored the only run after leading off the seventh with a ground-rule double. Thompson brought him in with a one-out single to help Chicago end a six-game skid against Boston.

Covey (2-1) more than kept pace with former White Sox ace Sale (5-4), who lost his third straight start despite striking out 10 in eight innings. Jace Fry and Nate Jones each pitched a scoreless inning, and Joakim Soria earned his seventh save. Chicago has won three of four.

It was Boston's first 1-0 loss at Fenway Park since Sept. 14, 2016 against Baltimore.

                          BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 1

TORONTO (AP) - J.A. Happ allowed two hits in seven innings to earn his 100th career victory, Russell Martin homered and drove in two runs and Toronto beat Baltimore to win consecutive games for the first time in more than a month.

Randal Grichuk and Kevin Pillar also homered as the Blue Jays recorded their first back-to-back victories since April 30 and May 1 at Minnesota.

The Orioles lost for the ninth time in 11 games and dropped to 9-25 on the road and 19-43 overall, both worst in the majors.

Craig Gentry got both of Baltimore's hits off Happ (8-3), and two relievers completed the five-hitter. Right-hander Andrew Cashner (2-8) lost his third straight start. Ryan Tepera recorded the final four outs for his third save in six opportunities.

                          MARINERS 4, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Marco Gonzales won his fourth straight start and Seattle beat Tampa Bay for the team's 16th win in 20 games.

Gonzales (7-3) pitched into the eighth inning, leaving the game after taking a throw at first base too late to retire a sliding Mallex Smith. Christian Arroyo had a solo homer in the fifth and C.J. Cron added a two-run shot in the eighth off former teammate Alex Colome to pull the Rays within a run.

However, Edwin Diaz got the final four outs for his 22nd save in 25 opportunities, finishing the Mariners' 20th one-run win of the season and sending the Rays to their eighth straight loss.

Wilmer Font (0-3) gave up two runs and two hits while striking out five in 2 1/3 innings in his first major league start.

                          BREWERS 12, PHILLIES

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Braun homered twice and drove in five runs, and Milwaukee busted out of an offensive funk to beat Philadelphiaand snap a three-game losing streak.

Braun, who came in batting .229, hit a three-run shot off Vince Velasquez (4-7) in the first inning and a two-run blast off Mark Leiter Jr. in a six-run fourth that made it 11-0.

Christian Yelich also went deep and Lorenzo Cain added two hits and two RBIs for the Brewers, who had 13 hits after totaling four runs in their previous three games.

Jhoulys Chacin (5-1) allowed four runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings for Milwaukee, which held onto a half-game lead over the Chicago Cubs atop the NL Central.

                          MARLINS 4, PADRES 0

MIAMI (AP) - Caleb Smith pitched into the sixth inning and had an RBI single for his first career hit to help Miami beat San Diego.

Smith (5-6) gave up four hits and two walks while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings. Brad Ziegler pitched 1 2/3 innings, and Drew Steckenrider and Kyle got three outs each to finish the shutout.

Brian Anderson had three hits and Cameron Maybin had two for the Marlins, who have won three of four. Eric Lauer (2-4) allowed three runs amd six hits and walked seven in five innings.

                          ASTROS 7, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Justin Verlander struck out nine in seven innings after Shin-Soo Choo homered on the Houston ace's first pitch of the game.

Verlander (8-2) gave up three earned runs after allowing just two in his first 40 2/3 innings on the road this season.

Texas slugger Joey Gallo bunted for a single in the sixth, drawing a big cheer from the crowd. The Astros had been putting six defenders to the right side of second base when Gallo batted this season, and old-school baseball fans had been urging him to bunt toward third and beat the shift.

Alex Bregman homered off Doug Fister (1-7), who exited with right knee soreness after throwing one pitch in the sixth.

                          DIAMONDBACKS 9, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt continued his sizzling June with two long home runs and a double, leading Arizona over Colorado Rockies.

Jake Lamb and David Peralta also homered, and Zack Greinke (5-4) tossed 5 2/3 innings and had an RBI single.

Goldschmidt had just 14 hits in May, batting .144 in 27 games, but has already collected 13 hits in seven games this month.

Goldschmidt's first drive was one of three homers German Marquez (4-6) allowed in the third. Lamb and Peralta also connected.

Jon Jay, acquired from Kansas City on Wednesday, went 0 for 4 with a walk and scored a run in his Diamondbacks debut.

                          ANGELS 4, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ian Kinsler hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and Justin Upton went deep in the eighth, powering Los Angeles past Minnesota.

Blake Parker pitched a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save in seven attempts, capping a strong finish for the Angels after a rough start before the game with the news that two-way rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani has an elbow injury and will be out for at least three weeks.

Noe Ramirez (2-2) got the win. Ryan Pressly (0-1) took the loss.

Kinsler has five home runs in his last 10 games, batting .366 over that span. Upton, who took Addison Reed deep, has five homers in his last six games.

                          CARDINALS 7, REDS 6, 10 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Martinez homered twice off Matt Harvey, and Jedd Gyorko singled home the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning as St. Louis beat Cincinnati for the 12th straight time.

The Cardinals haven't dominated the Reds so completely since beating them 12 straight from 1931-32.

St. Louis has won its last 10 games at Great American Ball Park. The Cardinals blew a two-run lead in the ninth before extending the streak.

Bud Norris (3-1) was warming up to pitch the ninth when a downpour prompted a 36-minute delay. Norris then gave up four hits, including RBI singles by Joey Votto and Jesse Winker.

Gyorko's RBI single off Raisel Iglesias (1-1) decided it. John Brebbia gave up a double in the bottom of the inning and an intentional walk before fanning Brandon Dixon for his second save.

                              • LEADING OFF: Top pitchers Strasburg, Tanaka, Ohtani ailing
                                June 8, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                                AILING ACES

Star pitchers Stephen Strasburg, Masahiro Tanaka and Shohei Ohtani all had a rough start to the weekend.

Strasburg had to exit after just two innings when Washington hosted the Giants because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. The Nats said the right-hander also had shoulder inflammation and would have an MRI.

Tanaka was forced to leave with hamstring problems after sprinting to score his first major league run in the New York Yankees' win over the Mets. He raced home on Aaron Judge's sacrifice fly at Citi Field.

Ohtani was put on the disabled list by the Los Angeles Angels with a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow. The team said the two-way Japanese sensation will be out at least three weeks.

                                A CAPITAL IDEA

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is set to throw out the first pitch at Nationals Park, two days after leading the club to its first Stanley Cup championship. Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP, and his teammates will be on hand for his ceremonial toss before the Nationals host San Francisco. Ovechkin is bringing something else, too - the shiny silver Cup.

                                HOMELY

The Mets have lost nine straight at Citi Field after falling to the Yankees 4-1 Friday night in the Subway Series opener. The Mets will try to break the skid when Steve Matz (2-4, 3.42 ERA) starts against Domingo German (0-4, 5.44), who is searching for his first major league win.

                                SMOOTH SAILING

The Mariners have won 16 of 20 and taken over the AL West lead. Ace Felix Hernandez will try to keep Seattle headed in the right direction when he starts at Tampa Bay. King Felix is 9-2 lifetime against the Rays, including a perfect game in 2012. Blake Snell (7-3)starts for the Rays, who have lost eight in a row.

                                TAKE THE TRAM

Detroit first base coach Ramon Santiago is away from the team with his wife about to give birth, so Alan Trammell has been filling in. Now a special assistant to the Tigers general manager, Trammell will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next month. The Tigers will also retire the No. 3 that Trammell wore.

                                CLOSE

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been out of the starting lineup for four straight games because of a bruised left middle finger. He entered Friday as part of a double switch against Pittsburgh.
