            May 23, 2018

Hottest team: Mariners (6-2 last eight)

Seattle rallied past Oakland in 10 innings to snap the Athletics’ four-game winning streak on Tuesday. The Mariners picked up their fourth straight victory thanks to Guillermo Heredia’s RBI double in the 10th inning, as Seattle remains two games behind Houston for the top spot in the AL West. Seattle improved to 5-2 this season against Oakland, while beating the A’s in the series opener for the third time in three tries.

Marco Gonzales heads to the mound for the Mariners tonight, as the southpaw is winless in his last two starts, both coming against the Tigers. In Gonzales’ lone start against Oakland this season, the left-hander was knocked around for four runs in 3.1 innings, but the Mariners managed to pick up a 10-8 victory on April 14.

Coldest team: Diamondbacks (1-12 last 13)

Arizona just can’t break out of this category, while continuing to struggle breaking onto the scoreboard consistently. The D-backs’ offense woes were apparent again in Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to the Brewers as Arizona has scored a total of three runs in the last 35 innings. Ten times during this 13-game stretch the D-backs have plated two runs or less, which included their lone victory against the Brewers on May 15.

Can Arizona avoid its second straight sweep today? The D-backs send out Zack (not Greinke) Godley, who looks to pick up a win for the first time in three starts. Godley wasn’t bad in his last outing against the Mets by allowing three runs (one earned) in six innings of a 3-1 loss last Friday. Arizona hasn’t had much luck when trying to avoid a sweep this season by going 0-2 in this situation.

Hottest pitcher: Justin Verlander, Astros (5-2, 1.05 ERA)

Amazingly, Houston has won only one of Verlander’s last four starts, but the former Cy Young winner and Most Valuable Player has allowed two earned runs in this stretch. The Astros scored a total of one run in three losses when Verlander took the mound, while pushing across two runs in a 2-0 victory over the Angels in his past appearance. Verlander has delivered nine of quality 10 starts this season, but two of Houston’s losses have come with him listed as a favorite of -250 or higher as he is in that range today against the Giants.

Coldest pitcher: Homer Bailey, Reds (1-6, 6.11 ERA)

Cincinnati has struggled to win when Bailey takes the mound this season by posting a dreadful 1-9 record. Bailey and the Reds are winless in six starts at Great American Ballpark, while getting knocked around by the Cubs his last time out for 10 hits and six runs in 4.2 innings of an 8-1 loss. Bailey has allowed at least five earned runs in three straight home starts, while giving up five runs in his last outing against the Pirates on April 5 at PNC Park in a 5-2 defeat.

Biggest OVER run: Yankees (6-2 last eight)

The Rangers tripped up the Yankees on Tuesday, 6-4 after New York captured the high-scoring opener of this series on Monday. The Bronx Bombers scored 28 runs in their previous three games prior to getting held in check last night, as six is the magic number for this team. When the Yankees plate six runs or more this season, New York owns a remarkable 21-1 mark. Will the Yankees score at least six runs tonight against Doug Fister? The Texas right-hander is coming off a scoreless outing against the White Sox, while the Rangers have hit the UNDER in each of Fister’s last three starts.

Biggest UNDER run: White Sox (8-1 last nine)

The Orioles grabbed a 3-2 victory in the opener of this series before the White Sox turned the tables for a 3-2 win on Tuesday. Chicago erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the eighth inning off the Baltimore bullpen, as the Sox have allowed three runs or less in six of the past seven games. Dylan Covey makes his second start for Chicago as the right-hander was tagged for four runs in six innings at Kansas City in his last outing, but the game stayed UNDER the high total of 10 in a 5-2 loss.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Rays

Boston remains atop the AL East race after beating Tampa Bay on Tuesday, 4-2, coupled with New York’s loss at Texas. The Red Sox improved to 8-3 this season against the Rays, while winning in four straight visits to Tropicana Field. In those four wins, the Sox have allowed five runs, as Chris Sale tossed 7.2 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Another southpaw takes the mound tonight as David Price faces his former team for the fourth time this season. In the first two outings, Price didn’t allow a run in a pair of one-run victories. However, the Rays solved Price at Fenway Park on April 28 by knocking around the left-hander for six runs in 5.2 innings of a 12-6 blowout as +180 underdogs. Price is fresh off a complete game victory over the Orioles in his last outing by striking out eight in a 6-2 win.

Chris Archer counters for Tampa Bay, who has lost two straight since a six-game winning streak. Archer ended a three-start winless streak by beating the Angels in his last outing by tossing 6.2 scoreless innings in a 7-1 victory. The right-hander is facing the Red Sox for the first time since opening day as the Rays erased a 4-0 deficit to beat Boston, 6-4 as Archer allowed four earned runs in six innings of work.

Betcha didn’t know: The Braves and Phillies wrap up their series at Citizens Bank Park tonight after Atlanta knocked off Philadelphia on Tuesday, 3-1. Atlanta seeks its 30th victory of the season but also is trying to improve to 13-1 in Game 3’s of a series, which is by far the top record in this situation in Major League baseball.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-260) vs. Giants

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+115) vs. Orioles

Biggest line move: Braves (+130 to +115) at Phillies

            • LEADING OFF: Price faces old pal Archer; Verlander vs Giants
              May 23, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

              OLD CONNECTIONS

Red Sox lefty David Price (4-4), coming off a complete-game victory over Baltimore, pitches against his original team and buddy Chris Archer (3-3) when Boston visits Tampa Bay. ''There will be a little bit of banter, but it's all friendly,'' Archer said. Price might get a chance to face prized Rays prospect Willy Adames, who homered in his major league debut Tuesday night. The 22-year-old shortstop was acquired from Detroit in a three-team trade that sent Price from the Rays to the Tigers on July 31, 2014.

              THE THROWBACK

Houston ace Justin Verlander (5-2) faces San Francisco at home. Verlander lowered his ERA to a big league-best 1.05 by tossing a five-hitter against the Angels last time out, his eighth career shutout and first since 2015 with Detroit. Jeff Samardzija (1-2) is up for the Giants.

              ON SECOND THOUGHT

The Mariners are down another second baseman after Dee Gordon joined Robinson Cano on the disabled list. Gordon, who had just taken over at second for the All-Star slugger, hurt his right big toe on May 9 in Toronto and reinjured it Sunday. Seattle manager Scott Servais said the team expects the injury to heal on its own with rest and the Mariners want Gordon to stay off his feet for a while. Gordon Beckham started at second Tuesday night in Oakland. Gordon was acquired from Miami during the offseason and shifted to center field, then moved back to the infield after Cano broke his hand May 13 when hit by a pitch. Cano received an 80-game suspension two days later for a positive drug test. Gordon is batting .304 with 16 steals in 45 games. ''As soon as the 10 days are up I hope to have him back out there with us,'' Servais said.

              NEW STARTER

Adam Plutko is set to replace struggling right-hander Josh Tomlin in Cleveland's rotation when the Indians conclude a two-game interleague series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Tomlin said he ''definitely wasn't surprised'' by the move to the bullpen after going 0-4 with a 7.84 ERA through six starts and seven appearances. Plutko will be called up from Triple-A Columbus to make his second career start. He earned his first major league win about three weeks ago, pitching into the eighth inning against Toronto as the 26th man for a doubleheader. Jon Lester (4-1, 2.52 ERA) seeks his third straight win for the Cubs.

              HALF A HUNDRED

Jacob deGrom (4-0, 1.75 ERA) tries for his 50th major league win when he starts for the New York Mets in the rubber game of a series against last-place Miami. Dan Straily (2-0, 3.60) goes for the Marlins after shutting out Atlanta for seven innings in his previous outing. Jose Bautista went 1 for 3 with a double in his Mets debut Tuesday night.

                • Verlander gets some run support as Astros top Giants
                  May 23, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Justin Verlander got some run support for the first time in nearly a month and led the Houston Astros over the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on Wednesday.

Verlander (6-2) struck out nine and walked one in six innings, allowing one run and three hits as his major league-leading ERA rose slightly to 1.08. He had given up just three runs over 29 innings during his previous four starts, but the Astros had scored just three runs in that span, getting shut out twice.

Ken Giles pitched the ninth to remain perfect in nine save chances.

George Springer hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fifth on a 93 mph fastball from Jeff Samardzija (1-3), driving the ball off the facade above the left-field seats. Carlos Correa added an RBI single later in the inning.

                  INDIANS 1, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Adam Plutko carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Andrew Miller provided stellar relief work, helping Cleveland beat Chicago.

Plutko (2-0) struck out four and walked four in his second major league start. The right-hander was promoted from Triple-A Columbus to replace the struggling Josh Tomlin in Cleveland's rotation.

Michael Brantley, Francisco Lindor and Rajai Davis had two hits apiece as the AL Central leaders won for the third time in four games. The Indians completed a sweep of their two-game set versus the Cubs in their first appearance at Wrigley Field since they lost the 2016 World Series.

Chicago's Jon Lester (4-2) allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one while lowering his ERA to 2.37 in his 10th start this year.

                  RANGERS 12, YANKEES 10

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jurickson Profar had a bases-clearing double to put Texas ahead to stay in a wild, series-clinching win over New York, which matched a major league record with four more homers.

Gleyber Torres became the youngest Yankee ever to homer in three consecutive games and Aaron Judge hit a 471-foot blast as New York became only the third team in major league history with 21 homers in a five-game stretch - 12 of those in Texas. Didi Gregorius and Neil Walker also went deep for the Yankees.

Torres and Judge both homered during a six-run fifth to put New York ahead 10-5. The Rangers then scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, and an inning later got Profar's three-run double to make it 11-10 after reliever David Robertson (3-2) had already given up a bases-loaded walk.

Alex Claudio (2-2), the third of six Texas pitchers, struck out three in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Keone Kela struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 10 chances.

                  BREWERS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Travis Shaw hit a three-run homer and Jesus Aguilar had a go-ahead, two-run single during a seven-run fourth inning to help Milwaukee send Arizona to its seventh straight loss.

Brent Suter (4-3) allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings as the NL Central-leading Brewers moved a season-high 12 games over .500. Milwaukee's 31-19 start is the team's best over 50 games in franchise history.

Arizona has lost 13 of 14, falling out of the NL West lead while scoring just 26 runs in that span. The three games marked the Brewers' first sweep of the Diamondbacks since June 2-4, 2008.

Zack Godley (4-4) gave up a season-high eight runs - six earned - and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

                  PHILLIES 4, BRAVES 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jake Arrieta (4-2) struck out seven in 6 2/3 sharp innings, Carlos Santana's swinging-bunt broke a scoreless tie and Philadelphia beat Atlanta.

The Phillies took two of three to win their first series against the NL East-leading Braves in four tries and closed to within a half-game of first place.

Seranthony Dominguez retired the four batters he faced after entering with runners on second and third in the seventh. Hector Neris pitched the ninth to complete the eight-hitter.

Braves starter Luiz Gohara (0-1) gave up two runs and four hits in four innings.

                  MARLINS 2, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - J.T. Realmuto and Starlin Castro each hit an RBI single off closer Jeurys Familia in the ninth inning, and Miami rallied past New York.

Jacob deGrom dodged trouble throughout seven scoreless innings and Brandon Nimmo homered in the fifth for the Mets, who carried a slim lead into the ninth. But the Marlins broke through against Familia (2-2), who has four blown saves in 17 chances this season.

Familia was booed by the crowd of 24,808 after Castro's hit and again when he got out of the inning.

Adam Conley (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning and Brad Ziegler worked the ninth for his ninth save, retiring pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores with a runner on second to end it.

                  ANGELS 5, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Shohei Ohtani hit a tying two-run single in the ninth inning, Andrelton Simmons added another two-run hit and Los Angeles rallied to beat Toronto.

Toronto turned to Tyler Clippard (4-2) in the ninth to protect a 3-1 lead, but he loaded the bases with consecutive walks to Mike Trout, Justin Upton and Albert Pujols. Ohtani broke his bat but lined a single to center for his first hit of the series, and Simmons chased Clippard with a single through the drawn-in infield.

Justin Anderson (1-1) pitched one inning for the win and Blake Parker survived a shaky ninth to record his third save.

                  ROYALS 5, CARDINALS 2, 10 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Drew Butera had a two-run single in the 10th to lead Kansas City past St. Louis.

Butera's RBIs were his first since May 2. Jon Jay followed with an RBI single as the Royals won their first series since taking three of four from Detroit May 3-6.

Blaine Boyer (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win. Kelvin Herrera earned his 10th save with a perfect 10th.

Bud Norris (1-1) pitched a perfect ninth, but couldn't record an out in the 10th, giving up back-to-back singles to Jorge Soler and Alex Gordon before compounding the issue by committing an error on Alcides Escobar's sacrifice attempt to load the bases ahead of Butera.

                  RED SOX 4, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Xander Bogaerts sparked a three-run rally in the ninth inning, David Price pitched the bulk of a three-hitter and Boston won its fourth straight.

Bogaerts doubled off Alex Colome (2-5) to drive in J.D. Martinez, who reached on a throwing error by shortstop Willy Adames to lead off the ninth. After a wild pitch, Eduardo Nunez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Boston tacked on another on a passed ball.

Price pitched three-hit ball over six innings, allowing a run while striking out nine. Joe Kelly (3-0) got the win and Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 15th save.

                  PADRES 3, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Christian Villanueva hit a two-run double, Tyson Ross pitched into the seventh inning and San Diego salvaged the finale of a three-game series against Washington.

Ross (4-3) didn't allow a runner past second base until the seventh, struck out nine and yielded one run in 6 2/3 innings. Brad Hand recorded the final five outs for his 15th save, escaping a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth by inducing Spencer Kieboom to ground into a game-ending double play.

In his season debut for the Nationals, Erick Fedde (0-1) allowed three runs and four hits while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

                  PIRATES 5, REDS 4, 12 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Josh Harrison tripled in the go-ahead run off Dylan Floro (1-1) in the 12th inning - his fourth hit of the game - and Pittsburgh rallied after wasting a late lead.

The Pirates blew a three-run lead in the eighth before rallying to end their four-game losing streak.

Left-hander Steven Brault (4-1) pitched two innings. Kyle Crick escaped a bases-loaded threat in the 12th for his first career save, retiring Brandon Dixon on a grounder to end it.

                  TIGERS 4, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Michael Fulmer won for the first time in four starts, Niko Goodrum ended an 0-for-14 skid with a home run and Detroit stopped a five-game losing streak with a win over Minnesota.

Fulmer (2-3) allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts, improving to 4-0 against Minnesota as he threw a season-high 112 pitches. He had lost his previous three starts, allowing 14 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings.

Shane Greene pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 14 chances, completing a five-hitter.

Goodrum, Nicholas Castellanos and Victor Martinez had two hits each for the Tigers.

Kyle Gibson (1-3) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

                  WHITE SOX 11, ORIOLES 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Dylan Covey (1-1) tossed seven strong innings for his first major league win, Yoan Moncada and Adam Engel each hit three-run homers and Chicago pounded Baltimore.

Jose Rondon added his first major league homer as last-place Chicago rolled to its fifth win in seven games. Baltimore, last in the AL East, has lost four of five overall and is 5-21 on the road.

Alex Cobb (1-6) lasted just 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing since April 19. The right-hander allowed six runs on eight hits.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

                      13) When I was lucky enough to be an assistant high school basketball coach a long time ago, the time during the National Anthem was special to me; it allowed me to collect my thoughts about what was about to happen, and to appreciate the blessings I have. It was a good two or three minutes to get my mind organized.

                      12) My take on the National Anthem issue in the NFL and my opinion on this is pretty much my opinion on most things in this country:

Its a free bleepin’ country. Let people do what they want, within reason.

Freedom of speech, freedom of expression is a vital part of our democracy. I would never kneel during the National Anthem, but I respect another person’s right to do so. But thats me.

                      11) In his last six starts, Jacob deGrom has allowed one run in 33.1 IP; he’s won two of the six games. Mets’ bullpen did him in again last night, blowing a 9th inning lead in a 2-1 loss.

                      10) Paul Zimmerman was a really good football writer for Sports Illustrated; his advice to young football writers?

“Talk to the offensive linemen; there won’t be crowds around them, and they know why everything happens.”

                      9) The NHL commercial where the all-time stars of the game spell out their last names is a great one; the pride that comes with having your name etched on the Stanley Cup is special.

                      8) Albany Great Danes’ basketball team is heading to Northern Ireland for an 8-team tournament in late November. I’d prefer Hawai’i or Las Vegas to Ireland, but no one asked me.

                      7) Aaron Judge went into a slump after the All-Star break last year, so he’ll be skipping the Home Run Derby in Washington in July.

                      6) My plan to re-align the major leagues, by geography:
Division A: both NYC teams, Red Sox, Phillies, Blue Jays
Division B: Rays, Marlins, Braves, Orioles, Nationals
Division C: Pirates, Indians, Tigers, Twins, Brewers

Division D: Cubs, White Sox, Cardinals, Royals, Reds
Division E: Rockies, Mariners, Rangers, Astros, Diamondbacks
Division F: A’s, Giants, Dodgers, Angels, Padres

                      5) Travel costs would go down a lot; now if MLB expands to 32 teams soon, and it sounds like they might, then it becomes eight 4-team divisions. Portland, OR and Montreal are listed as the frontrunners for expansion teams.

                      4) From SI.com: Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells and Hank Aaron both homered off former major league pitcher Al Downing, Parcells in an American Legion game in a high school game in New Jersey, Aaron with his 715th home run to break Babe Ruth’s record in 1974.

                      3) White Sox catcher Welington Castillo is done for 80 games after flunking a PED test; bad news for the Pale Hose and also my fantasy team, which doesn’t need any more bad news.

                      2) Washington 4, Tampa Bay 0— Congrats to Alex Ovechkin on making his first Stanley Cup final; he’s led the NHL in goals seven times. Good to see him get a shot on this great stage.

                      1) If you enjoy gambling, you should make a trip to Las Vegas and visit the SuperBook here. Great place to watch games. You can wager on just about anything you like. Baseball, NHL, NBA, golf, soccer and of course, football and college hoop. Very fun place to hang out.
