  • LEADING OFF: Astros-Indians again, Mets limp to tough trip
    May 24, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

    YOU AGAIN

Houston's Charlie Morton and Cleveland's Mike Clevinger get a rematch of their most recent outing when the Astros and Indians begin a series at Progressive Field. Morton (6-0, 1.94 ERA) pitched Houston to a 4-1 victory last Friday, striking out eight over seven innings. Clevinger (3-1, 2.87) got his first loss of the season after allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings. The past two AL champions are in very different places, with Cleveland hovering near .500 while Houston is off to the second-best start in franchise history at 32-18 - trailing only last year's 34-16 opening.

    ROCKY ROAD

Minus injured sluggers Yoenis Cespedes and Todd Frazier, the Mets begin a stretch of eight road games in seven days against two teams currently in first place: Milwaukee and Atlanta. Left-hander Steven Matz (1-3, 4.42 ERA) opens the trip at NL Central-leading Milwaukee. Right-hander Zach Davies (2-3, 4.24), who lost to Matz 6-5 on April 13 at Citi Field, comes off the disabled list to start for the Brewers after being sidelined since May 3 with right rotator cuff inflammation.

    MAY IT GET BETTER

Rick Porcello tries to recapture his April form when Boston concludes a three-game series at Tampa Bay. Porcello (6-1, 3.39) went 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA in six April starts, but he's 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA in four outings since. The 2016 AL Cy Young Award winner faces hard-throwing left-hander Blake Snell (5-3, 3.07) at Tropicana Field.

    DAVIS TO DL

Oakland will have to power on without slugger Khris Davis after the outfielder hit the DL on Wednesday with a Grade 1 strain in his right groin. Davis has topped 40 homers the past two seasons and has a team-leading 13 this year. He was hurt Sunday in Toronto running out a grounder.

      • Bundy fans 14, throws 2-hitter in O's 9-3 win over Chisox
        May 24, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) Charlie Morton remained unbeaten this season with six solid innings, Alex Bregman and Jake Marisnick hit three-run homers and the Houston Astros defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-2 on Thursday night.

Morton (7-0) allowed two runs and five hits while extending his career-best winning streak to 10 games. The right-hander, who moved into a tie for the AL lead in wins, hasn't lost since Sept. 9, 2017, against Oakland. He walked three and struck out five.

Morton fell behind after Michael Brantley's two-run single in the third, but his offense gave him plenty of support. Houston scored three runs in the fifth and added five in the sixth to put the game away.

Mike Clevinger (3-2) opened with four scoreless innings, but couldn't hold a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Bregman capped the inning with his fifth homer over the 19-foot high wall in left field that put Houston ahead. He added an RBI double in the sixth.

        ORIOLES 9, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Dylan Bundy struck out a career-high 14 and pitched a two-hitter for his second complete game in the majors, helping the Baltimore Orioles beat the White Sox.

Bundy (3-6) had been roughed up in losing four of five previous starts, but sparkled once again in an afternoon contest. The 25-year-old right-hander improved to 2-1 with 1.32 ERA in five day games.

Adam Jones and Trey Mancini hit solo home runs as Baltimore took a 9-0 lead after three innings. Jones and Manny Machado each had three hits, and Chance Sisco drove in three runs for the last-place Orioles. They won for just the third time in nine games and improved to 6-21 on the road.

Jose Rondon hit a three-run homer with two outs in the fourth for the first hit off Bundy. It was Rondon's second career homer and second in two days.

Earlier in the day, White Sox catcher Welington Castillo was suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball following a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance. The commissioner's office cited use of Erythropoietin (EPO).

        ANGELS 8, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each hit solo home runs, and Shohei Ohtani doubled twice in Los Angeles' victory over Toronto.

        Nick Tropeano (2-3) pitched a season-high 7 1/3 innings to snap a five-start winless streak.

Ohtani also walked twice and scored two runs. Martin Maldonado had two hits and three RBIs.

The Angels scored more than three runs for the third time in their past 12 and posted their biggest output since an 8-0 win at Colorado on May 9.

Tropeano (2-3) allowed one run and four hits, walked a season-low one and struck out six. The victory was his first since April 12 at Kansas City.

Trout hit a leadoff drive in the fifth that bounced off the top of the left field wall and went out. It came off right-hander Marco Estrada (2-5). Pujols connected off Deck McGuire in the ninth.

        REDS 5, PIRATES 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez hit a grand slam off Ivan Nova - who dropped his sixth straight start against Cincinnati - and Jesse Winker added a solo shot for the Reds against Pittsburgh.

The Reds took two of three in the series, completing a 3-4 homestand. Pittsburgh has lost five of six.

Luis Castillo (4-4) gave up four hits in six innings, including a two-run homer by David Freese.

Austin Meadows hit his second homer of the series, a two-run shot off Amir Garrett in the ninth that cut it to 5-4. Jared Hughes got the last two outs for his second save. The Reds are without closer Raisel Iglesias, who went on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained biceps in his non-throwing arm.

        ATHLETICS 4, MARINERS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Piscotty and the Athletics tagged Felix Hernandez early, and Oakland ended Seattle's five-game winning streak.

Oakland helped itself by turning a team record-tying five groundball double plays, and stopped a five-game home skid. The A's scored four times in the first inning, two on Piscotty's double off Hernandez (5-4). Hernandez settled down and retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced in going six innings.

Yusmeiro Petit (2-1) pitched three scoreless innings in relief. He was among five A's pitchers manager Bob Melvin used after saying it would be a bullpen day with rookie reliever Josh Lucas making a spot start. Lucas lasted just two innings in his first career start, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks and throwing 52 pitches.

        RAYS 6, RED SOX 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell threw six scoreless innings, Wilson Ramos drove in two runs, and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a three-game sweep.

Snell (6-3) allowed three hits, walked two and struck out eight. The left-hander is 2-0 in three starts against Boston this season, giving up two runs and 11 hits in 19 innings.

Mitch Moreland hit a solo homer and Rafael Devers had an RBI double off Matt Andriese in the ninth as Boston got within three runs. But, Alex Colome retired Sandy Leon on a two-out grounder with Devers on second to get his 11th save.

Red Sox starter Rick Porcello (6-2) lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs - four earned - and eight hits. Boston (34-16) dropped to 9-4 against the Rays this year.

          • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

College football lines that moved 4+ points Thursday:

            — Texas (+1) to (-3) vs USC

            — North Carolina (+11) to (+7) vs Central Florida

            — West Virginia (+3) to (-1.5) vs Texas Tech

            — Texas (+12) to (+6) vs Oklahoma

            — Arkansas State (pick) to (-4) vs Appalachian State

            — Oregon (-9) to (-13) vs Arizona State

            **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff after a fun vacation…….

            13) Rockets 98, Warriors 94— Golden State’s bench was a combined 2-8 from floor in 53:00 in this game; I didn’t think Houston could beat the Warriors unless they outran them, but they held Golden State to 92-94 points in their last two games.

In their three series wins, Houston has taken 123 3-pointers, 122 2-pointers; in Golden State’s two wins, Rockets have taken 71 treys and 95 2-point shots. Harden was 0-11 behind the arc in this game, but his team leads series, 3-2.

            12) Again, in their three wins, Houston has taken 81.7 shots/game; in their losses, 83, so they’re winning with their defensive performance, which is a big surprise.

            11) Had an excellent conversation in the Westgate SuperBook Wednesday night with a smart bettor who retired from the military and now lives in Las Vegas. He likes to play parlays and explained to me why; he knows a lot about soccer (I know NOTHING). Learned a lot from talking to him.

            10) My godson Tom knows a lot about soccer; he likes Belgium in the World Cup.

            9) There have been 23 baseball games this season where a pitcher had a no-hitter going thru six innings. That seems like a lot.

Thru Wednesday, the MLB batting average was .244; last time a full season ended with a batting average that low was 1972, the year before the DH came into being.

            8) UConn totally dominates women’s college basketball, so I’m wondering, how many UConn players are in the 12-team WNBA? Must be two or three per team, no?

Turns out there are currently 17 UConn alumni in the 12-team WNBA. 1.4 per team.

            7) SEC-Big X college basketball challenge this winter has some solid matchups: West Virginia-Tennessee, Florida-TCU, Kansas-Kentucky being three of the best.

            6) Baseball’s amateur draft is coming up; apparently it is very wide open this year. Detroit has the first pick and consensus is they’re still torn on who their #1 pick will be. Unusual.

            5) New England Patriots were practicing in OTA’s in number-less jerseys; the NFL told them to grow up and put numbers on, so Belichick had them wear numbers they won’t (can’t) wear in regular season games. Do rival teams spy on OTA’s?

            4) Orioles’ Dylan Bundy is 2-1, 2.86 in three starts since he gave up seven runs on 28 pitches in a hideous start against the Royals earlier this month.

            3) Since 1970, 50 QB’s were taken in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft; of those 50, 42 started at least one NFL regular season game. Christian Hackenberg hasn’t even gotten into a game yet; I’m curious why the Raiders traded for him this week.

            2) Last year, Oakland averaged 4.14 points less per game than their weekly over/under; Atlanta averaged 4.06 less points per game. Falcons were an “over” machine in 2016; last year, not so much.

            1) Indians’ Trevor Bauer and Astros’ Gerrit Cole played college baseball together at UCLA- they did not get along well.

Says Bauer: “We had a rocky relationship in college, because he told me that I had no future in baseball and he insulted my work ethic as a freshman.” Alrighty then.

The two hurlers face each other in Cleveland Sunday.

                    • LEADING OFF: Pedroia rejoins Red Sox, Diamondback doldrums
                      May 24, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                      WELCOME BACK

Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia is set to be activated by the Red Sox after missing Boston's first 50 games while recovering from knee surgery. Manager Alex Cora says Pedroia will come off the disabled list for a weekend series at Fenway Park against Atlanta and will start one of the first two games.

Pedroia's return to the AL East leaders will come exactly seven months after cartilage-restoration surgery on his left knee. The 34-year-old former AL MVP went 1 for 14 in a five-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket.

                      SKIDDING

The Diamondbacks have lost seven in a row and 13 of 14, scoring a total of just 26 runs in that span and dropping out of the NL West lead. Slugger Paul Goldschmidt, an All-Star in each of the last five seasons, is batting .200 and has only four RBIs in his last 34 games. Arizona hopes for better results all around when Patrick Corbin (4-1, 2.60 ERA) starts a weekend series at Oakland.

                      FAST START

Pittsburgh outfielder Austin Meadows is 11 for 25 in his first six major league games, including three home runs, two doubles and five RBIs. The 23-year-old rookie will aim to keep it going when the Pirates host St. Louis.

                      WHAT A RELIEF

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash is ready to try his relievers-as-starters approach again. All weekend, in fact.

Cash says he'll go in reverse when Sergio Romo comes out of the bullpen to start the series opener at home vs. Baltimore. Reliever Ryne Stanek will start Saturday and Romo will be begin Sunday's game. Romo had only pitched in relief for 588 games before starting twice last weekend against the Angels, throwing a total of 2 1/3 innings, for the rotation-thin Rays.

''We're not trying to do anything that's cute,'' Cash said. ''We're trying to do something that's right for us to win games.''

                      KEEP TRYING

Miami right-hander Jose Urena (0-7, 4.55 ERA) pitches at home against three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (7-1, 1.78) and the Nationals. Urena went 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA last season and was the Marlins' opening day starter this year. But Miami has lost all 10 of his starts, and 12 straight dating to last September - tying Brian Moehler's dubious club record set from 2005-06.

                      • Friday's Diamond Notes
                        May 25, 2018

Hottest team: Astros (9-2 last 11)

Houston improved to 3-1 against Cleveland this season (and in the last week) following Thursday’s 8-2 blowout of the Indians at Progressive Field. Charlie Morton topped Mike Clevinger for the second time in less than a week as the Astros’ right-hander tossed six innings to cash as a short road favorite. Houston’s pitching continues to dominate as the Astros’ staff has yielded two runs or less in six of the past seven games, while improving to 6-1 in the previous seven contests away from Minute Maid Park.

It’s a matchup of Cy Young winners on Friday as Dallas Keuchel opposes Corey Kluber on the mound. Keuchel lost to Kluber last Saturday in Houston, 5-4 as the Houston southpaw was tagged for three runs in the first inning. Keuchel struggled on the road to begin the season by losing his first three away starts, but is coming off wins against the White Sox and A’s, while Houston outscored those opponents, 26-3.

Coldest team: Diamondbacks (1-13 last 14)

Time flies in a Major League Baseball season as Arizona was cruising atop the NL West by starting 24-11. The D-backs reached that mark on May 8 with an extra innings win against the Dodgers, but have won only once since and have fallen out of first place. Arizona has been swept in three of the past four series, including dropping all three games at Milwaukee and scoring a total of four runs.

During their current seven-game losing streak, the D-backs have scored more than two runs once, while topping the two-run mark three times in the last 14 games. Arizona continues its disastrous road trip by traveling out west to face Oakland as Patrick Corbin hopes to get the D-backs on track. Corbin is winless in his last four starts since Arizona began the season at 5-1 in his six trips to the mound.

Hottest pitcher: Luis Severino, Yankees (7-1, 2.35 ERA)

New York returns home after dropping two of three at Texas, while blowing a four-run lead in Wednesday’s 12-10 loss. The Yankees host the Angels on Friday as New York looks to improve to 10-1 this season when Severino takes the mound. Severino has compiled seven consecutive quality starts, while being listed as a favorite of -200 or more in each of his past three outings. The right-hander picked up a no-decision against the Angels in Anaheim last month in a 4-3 win as Severino yielded five hits and three earned runs in seven innings.

Coldest pitcher: Jose Urena, Marlins (0-7, 4.55 ERA)

Urena is the only pitcher in baseball that has made at least 10 starts and his team has yet to win when he heads to the hill. Miami owns an 0-10 record in Urena’s 10 outings, including an 0-7 mark at Marlins Park. Urena hasn’t been terrible in spite of his overall numbers, as he has allowed three earned runs or less in four of his past five starts. However, the run support has been horrible for Urena, as the Marlins have scored three runs or less in eight of his 10 outings. Urena and the Marlins host the Nationals as the right-hander was winless in a pair of starts against Washington last season.

Biggest OVER run: Yankees (7-2 last nine)

New York’s offense showed up in Arlington by scoring 10 runs in two of the three games. However, the Yankees’ pitching let them down by allowing 18 runs in the final two losses as New York dropped its first series since mid-April at Boston. The Yankees fell to 21-2 this season when scoring at least six runs in a game, as New York will try to get on track against the Angels. Andrew Heaney takes the ball for the Halos as he has allowed five earned runs in his last five starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Twins (8-3 last 11)

Minnesota’s three-game winning streak came to a halt in Wednesday’s 4-1 home setback to Detroit. However, the Twins extended their UNDER stretch to four consecutive games as they have allowed seven runs during this span. Minnesota travels to Seattle as two of their first three meetings this season have finished UNDER the total. Rookie Fernando Romero makes his fifth start for Minnesota as the right-hander has seen the UNDER cash in three of his first four outings. Romero didn’t allow a run in his first two starts, while giving up five runs in his past two trips to the mound.

Matchup to watch: Braves vs. Red Sox

Both Atlanta and Boston own slight edges at the top of their respective divisions as the two squads hook up at Fenway Park this weekend for an interleague series. The Red Sox failed to pull off a sweep of the Rays by falling at Tampa Bay on Thursday, 6-3. However, Boston has won six of its past eight games to jump New York for first place in the AL East.

Atlanta continues its road trip after dropping two of three at Philadelphia as the Braves were shut out in both losses. Julio Teheran heads to the hill for the Braves in the series opener at Boston as the right-hander has been knocked around in his last two starts. Teheran began May by tossing consecutive scoreless outings, but has allowed 10 earned runs in 11 innings of work against the Cubs and Marlins. Atlanta has posted an impressive 8-2 record with Teheran on the bump this season, including three consecutive wins away from SunTrust Park.

Eduardo Rodriguez counters for Boston, as he gone through plenty of ups and downs this season. Currently, Rodriguez is on the uptick by putting together two scoreless starts in his past three outings, while Boston has managed an 8-1 record with the southpaw on the mound this season. The Red Sox have won five of seven home series openers in 2018, while going 18-4 since the start of last season in interleague play.

Betcha didn’t know: The Rockies have vaulted to the top of the NL West in spite of losing four of the last five games. Thanks to Arizona’s recent meltdown, Colorado owns a half-game lead over the Diamondbacks heading into the weekend. The Rockies host the Reds, as Colorado looks to improve on a 6-2 record in its last eight series openers. However, the Rockies have compiled the least amount of home wins in the National League with seven victories at Coors Field compared to 11 defeats.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-250) at Marlins

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+135) at Rangers

                          May 25, 2018

                          Friday MLB Best Bet
L.A Angels vs New York Yankees

Plenty of weekend series begin today in Major League Baseball, and for all the limited intrigue in regards to championship aspirations a weekend series at the end of May can hold, this Angels/Yankees battle over the weekend should be a good one.

Both clubs have eyes on either simply making the playoffs and/or making their stay during October baseball a long one, and through about two months of play we should expect both clubs to be in the conversation. The Yankees swept this Angels team out in L.A in a three-game set about a month ago, and this weekend the boys from California will be out for some revenge.

                          Will they get it tonight?

L.A Angels (+190), NY Yankees (-220); Total set at 8.5

If you're going just by the price the oddsmakers set out for this series opener tonight, you'd have to believe the Angels will have to wait until at least Saturday to get their revenge. L.A enters action tonight as a sizable road underdog as they are the ones who played yesterday and travelled afterwards, while the Yankees got to kick back and put their feet up. After two consecutive losses it wasn't all relaxation and recovery for New York though, but this really isn't the best scheduling spot for the Angels either and that's partly reflected in the line.

Truth be told though, I saw a lot of good things out of the Angels on Thursday in their series finale vs. Toronto, most notably that there was no sign of getting caught in a potential look-ahead spot. The Angels jumped all over the Blue Jays early and never looked back, and considering I was actually expecting the Angels to be somewhat looking ahead to this rematch against New York, a 8-1 win in Toronto was interesting to see.

L.A is simply not trying to waste any more Mike Trout years missing the playoffs and they can't really afford to look past anyone if they want to get back to playing baseball in October. Now, the Yankees are the Yankees and that series out in L.A a month ago had a lot of hype surrounding it and chances are the Angels got swallowed up by a bit of it. Not getting caught looking ahead to this series is quite a good sign for L.A and I've got them with a much better chance of winning this game then the 34.5% implied odds this +190 ML price is suggesting.

Tonight's series opener is also a rematch of the series opener out in L.A when Luis Severino was able to out-duel Andrew Heaney in a 4-3 Yankees victory. That day it was actually the Angels who held the lead going into the 9th before coughing up the lead in the 9th and ultimately losing it in extras. A result like that doesn't suggest to me that New York deserves to be priced the way that they are, but Yankees lines are always going to have some level of “Yankees tax” attached to them and this is no different.

Yet, while paying that tax is probably better more often than not with the Yankees prospects this year, tonight's one of those games where I've got to take the tremendous value the other way. New York's bullpen is taxed after a rough few days in Texas, and New York's just not got the current form I think they need to even be considered at these odds. Yes, Severino has been their best starter by far this season, but the Angels had him beat earlier this year, and in last year's meeting when L.A came to New York and Severino got the start, that game was short-lived for Severino and his -250 price tag as the Angels lit him up to the tune of a 10-5 win on the road. The 2018 L.A Angels are a lot better than last year's version, and with it being more than a week since New York saw some quality competition across the field from them, this is a spot the Yankees could get got.

L.A is on a 16-5 SU run on the road, and while they haven't been great for Heaney away from home (1-5 SU in his last six road starts), tonight's the night they turn it around. There is just too much value on this Angels team that appears to be taking things one game at a time and not allowing themselves to get caught up in potential (or real) hype about themselves or their opponent anymore. Give me the road dog in an upset.

Best Bet: L.A Angels ML +190

                            • Torres homers in 4th straight, Yanks win
                              May 25, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Gleyber Torres became the youngest American League player to homer in four straight games, Aaron Judge threw out a pair of runners from right field and the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Friday night.

Shohei Ohtani, the two-way Japanese rookie sensation, came up with the potential tying run on base and two outs in the eighth. New York brought in closer Aroldis Chapman to face Ohtani with Justin Upton at first. Chapman threw a wild pitch that advanced the runner, Ohtani sent a 100 mph pitch just foul of the left-field pole, then grounded out on a 101 mph offering.

Mike Trout tied the score in the fifth for Los Angeles with his 16th homer.

Torres drove in New York's first run with an infield hit in the second. He broke a 1-all tie in the seventh against Jim Johnson (2-2) with a drive over the right-field scoreboard, his ninth homer since coming up to the Yankees on April 22 and his fifth in four games. At 21 years, 163 days, he became the fourth-youngest player to homer in four straight games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Only Miguel Cabrera (20 years, 362 days) in 2004, Andrew Jones (21-139) in 1998 and Albert Pujols (21-147) in 2001 were younger. All of them were in the National League.

Chad Green (3-0) won in relief of Luis Severino. Chapman, pitching on five days' rest, got four straight outs for his 10th save in 11 chances, finishing a six-hitter.

                              RED SOX 6, BRAVES 2

BOSTON (AP) - Mookie Betts hit his major league-leading 17th home run, J.D. Martinez slugged his 16th and the Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2 on Friday night, hours after a roster shakeup.

Boston got its fifth win in six games shortly after designating Hanley Ramirez for assignment. The move freed up a roster spot for Dustin Pedroia to be activated from the DL, and also created the chance for regular playing time at first base for Mitch Moreland, who had a solo homer in the eighth.

The Red Sox fared fine without Ramirez, the struggling slugger they signed to an $88 million, four-year deal before the 2015 season. Xander Bogaerts also had a solo homer.

Eduardo Rodriguez struggled early but managed to hold Atlanta to just a pair of runs on six hits with three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Rodriguez (5-1) struck out seven.

Nick Markakis hit a two-run double for the Braves. Julio Teheran (4-2) pitched six innings.

                              BREWERS 4, METS 3, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A.J. Ramos walked consecutive batters to force in the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning, handing Milwaukee the victory over New York.

Ramos relieved Jerry Blevins with runners at first and third, walked Hernan Perez on four pitches then skipped his 3-1 pitch to Travis Shaw to end it. That scored Eric Sogard, who singled with one out off Robert Gsellman (4-1) to spark the rally and snap an 0-for-28 skid.

Jeremy Jeffress (4-0) picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Mets tied it at 3 in the ninth by getting to the Brewers' normally lights-out bullpen. Corey Knebel allowed two walks with two outs before giving up Jose Bautista's tying single.

                              ORIOLES 2, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - David Hess pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning, helping Baltimore overcome a strong effort from Tampa Bay's bullpen.

Danny Valencia doubled in a run off starter Sergio Romo, and Jonathan Schoop went deep against Ryan Yarbrough, spoiling a an impressive opener for the Rays' relievers as the team plans to use bullpen days in all three games this weekend. Yarbrough replaced Romo (1-1) after two outs and struck out eight over seven innings, tying a franchise record for strikeouts by a relief pitcher.

Hess (2-1) walked three and struck out three. Both of his wins have come against Tampa Bay.

Brad Brach pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

The game started about an hour after the Rays traded outfielder Denard Span and closer Alex Colome to Seattle for pitching prospects Andrew Moore and Tommy Romero.

                              ASTROS 11, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Altuve tied it in the eighth inning with a two-run double off Andrew Miller and then scored the go-ahead run on Marwin Gonzalez's squeeze bunt, and Houston scored 11 times in the final two innings to rout Cleveland.

Houston scored three runs off Miller (1-3) during a four-run eighth before George Springer's three-run homer helped make it a blowout in the ninth.

Springer's homer off Josh Tomlin highlighted the ninth, when the Astros sent 10 batters to the plate. Houston has won 13 of 16 and is 4-1 against Cleveland this season.

Joe Smith (2-1) recorded the final out in the seventh.

                              DIAMONDBACKS 7, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Patrick Corbin allowed four hits in seven innings and Nick Ahmed homered to help Arizona snap a seven-game losing streak with the victory over Oakland.

Paul Goldschmidt and John Ryan Murphy drove in two runs apiece for the slumping Diamondbacks, who lost 13 of their previous 14 games and averaged 1.9 runs during that stretch.

Corbin (5-1) was the beneficiary of some much-needed offense and ended a streak of five starts without a victory. The left-hander struck out seven and walked one.

Mark Canha homered for Oaklandm but Sean Manaea (5-5) struggled for a fifth consecutive start, sending the A's to their sixth loss in seven home games.

                              DODGERS 4, PADRES 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Matt Kemp slugged a three-run homer in the first inning, Enrique Hernandez added a solo shot in the third and Los Angeles beat San Diego in a matchup of the two worst teams in the NL West.

The Dodgers won their third in a row and seventh in their last eight while improving to 11-14 at home. They are next-to-last in the division. Lodged in the cellar, the Padres are 4-4 in their last eight.

Ross Stripling (2-1) allowed one unearned run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save. Clayton Richard (3-6) was the loser.

                              BLUE JAYS 6, PHILLIES 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Justin Smoak homered, Sam Gaviglio struck out six over six innings and Ryan Tepera escaped a ninth-inning jam for his first save to lead Toronto past Philadelphia.

Yangervis Solarte and Kevin Pillar added RBI doubles for the Blue Jays, who opened a nine-game road trip after going 1-6 and getting outscored 43-22 on a seven-game homestand against Oakland and the Angels.

Gaviglio (2-0) won for the second time in place of injured starter Marcus Stroman (right shoulder fatigue), allowing three runs on three hits - including the first career homer by Phillies starter Zach Eflin (1-1). Carlos Santana also homered for Philadelphia.

                              PIRATES 8, CARDINALS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joe Musgrove came off the disabled list to win his Pittsburgh debut with seven scoreless innings, and had his first career hit and scored the winning run against St. Louis.

The right-hander singled to lead off the sixth inning, when the Pirates scored three times off John Gant (1-2) to break a scoreless tie. Musgrove came home on Josh Harrison's double.

Musgrove (1-0) allowed five hits and struck out seven. He was activated before the game after being sidelined all season with a strained right shoulder. He was acquired from Houston in January.

Francisco Cervelli had a three-run double in the seventh to make it 6-0.

Tommy Pham homered for the Cardinals.

                              CUBS 6, GIANTS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks limited San Francisco to one run and two hits over seven innings, and Ben Zobrist lined a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh for Chicago.

Hendricks (4-3) struck out seven and walked two. The Cubs scored four in the seventh while chasing Derek Holland (2-6) to grab a 5-1 lead. Gorkys Hernandez had two of San Francisco's four hits - a leadoff homer in the fourth and a single in the sixth.

                              ROCKIES 5, REDS 4

DENVER (AP) - Pinch-hitter Noel Cuevas hit a tiebreaking triple in the sixth inning, Jon Gray settled down after a shaky start and Colorado beat Cincinnati to open a long homestand.

Nolan Arenado homered early for Colorado in the first of nine in a row at Coors Field.

Gray (5-6) threw 100 pitches over six taxing innings in allowing four runs. Wade Davis struck out two of three in the ninth to earn his major league-leading 18th save.

Cuevas delivered in the sixth after Tony Wolters led off with a walk. Cuevas lined a slider from Sal Romano (2-6) into the right-field corner for his first career triple.

                              MARINERS 2, TWINS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - James Paxton allowing one run in seven innings and struck out 11, and Mitch Haniger's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning helped lift Seattle past Minnesota.

Seattle won its 14th one-run game, thanks largely to another strong performance by Paxton (4-1). The lefty allowed just three hits - two of them to Max Kepler - and didn't walk a batter.

Paxton allowed Kepler's home run leading off the fifth inning.

Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his AL-leading 18th save.

Fernando Romero (2-1) took the loss.

                              RANGERS 8, ROYALS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ronald Guzman homered in his fourth straight start and drove in three runs, leading Texas past Kansas City.

The rookie first baseman hit his sixth home run of the season. Guzman started three games against the New York Yankees earlier this week and homered in each, but struck out as a pinch-hitter against the Royals on Thursday night. Nomar Mazara also had a homer and three RBIs for Texas.

Mike Minor (4-3) gave up home runs to Mike Moustakas and Jorge Soler, but earned the victory that ended Kansas City's season-best three-game winning streak. Eric Skoglund (1-5) was the loser.

                              NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 5

MIAMI (AP) - Max Scherzer was twice unable to hold a two-run lead and won anyway when Washington's bullpen locked down Miami.

Michael A. Taylor and Matt Adams each hit a two-run homer for the Nationals, and Bryce Harper's two-run double in the seventh broke it open. Scherzer (8-1) labored through six innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs, both season highs.

Scherzer departed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh, when the Nationals pulled ahead to stay. Trea Turner hit a tiebreaking infield single with the bases loaded against Nick Wittgren (2-1), and Harper punched a 96 mph fastball down the left-field line to make it 7-4.

                              WHITE SOX 5, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Jeimer Candelario had a go-ahead RBI bloop single during a three-run eighth inning and Detroit rallied past Chicago.

Candelario was reinstated from the disabled list before the game. He dropped in what initially looked like a routine popup over first baseman Jose Abreu's back shoulder, allowing Nicholas Castellanos to score from third and giving the Tigers their first lead of the night.

Reliever Buck Farmer (1-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and got the win. Shane Greene retired the side in the ninth for his 12th save. Former Tigers pitcher Bruce Rondon (2-3) took the loss.
