        • Friday's Best Bet
          July 7, 2017

Friday MLB Best Bet (8:40 p.m. ET)
Chicago White Sox vs. Colorado Rockies

          BetOnline.ag - Odds: Chicago (+144), Colorado (-154); Total set at 11.5

The Colorado Rockies are hoping to regain some of that consistency that saw them storm out of the gates in April and May, as the Rockies are 3-7 SU in their last 10 games and have really fallen out of the race for the NL West crown.

They currently enter action tonight 8.5 games behind the Dodgers for 1st, and while there is no denying the fact that L.A has been one of the most dominant teams all year, the Rockies definitely expected to be closer then they are at the All-Star break after that great start.

Colorado closes the first half of the season with an interleague matchup against the Chicago White Sox this evening, and this is a great opportunity for them to beat up on a last place squad and head into the time off feeling good about themselves. Will the Rockies get the job done in the opener?

          Best Bet: Over 11.5 runs

Trusting the Rockies to win SU at this -150 price is a little tough given their current form, especially when you consider that they are having trouble keeping opponents off the scoresheet. Colorado has allowed 5+ runs five times over their last 10 games (all losses), and against a White Sox team that has scored 4+ in their last seven, I'm not about to lay 50 cents on the dollar to take Colorado in this spot.

Instead, it's this total that I'm focusing on as the combination of Chicago's bats being rather healthy at the moment and two struggling starting pitchers on the hill, runs should come in bunches from the get-go.

German Marquez gets the nod for Colorado, and he's been hit hard all year. Marquez has allowed 72 hits in just 69.1 innings of work this year and the 4.5 runs/game he's allowed on average has been bumped up to 5.3/game over his last three starts.

Typically he doesn't last more than five innings as his control isn't the greatest, and for a White Sox lineup that has minimal experience against him, they should be patient early on and force him into the strikezone.

With the way Chicago's bats have been cashing in tallies, staying hot in the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field shouldn't be a problem for them tonight. And if Chicago does want to pull off the upset, they know they are going to need plenty of runs with Derek Holland on the hill for their side.

Holland has really struggled the past month, but more importantly for our situation, he's got a 10-5 O/U record in his 15 starts this season. In two of Holland's last three starts the opposition has finished with 9+ runs as teams are tattooing the ball against him and this Colorado lineup is one of the better ones in the business.

Chicago is on a 8-0 O/U run in Holland's last eight starts away from home, and as a team they are 8-3-1 O/U in their last 12 vs. NL teams. Add in the 18-7-1 O/U run they are on after a day off, and the White Sox will do their part on both sides of the ball to ensure this game goes 'over.'

Finally, when you look at the betting percentages on VegasInsider.com, you'll see about a 70/30 split in favor of the 'under' right now. All of that 'under' action has pushed this total down a full run from it's opening number, as many are looking at Colorado's streak of nine straight games where they've failed to cash an 'over' ticket (0-8-1 O/U). The drop in the number – even at 11.5 – has presented much more value in this 'over' play, and it's not often you see a strong majority of bettors on an 'under' in a Colorado home game.

It's spots like that where the masses typically get burned, and I've got no problem going the other way.

          • Francona will miss All-Star Game
            July 7, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) Indians manager Terry Francona underwent a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat that sidelined him for a few games and will keep him away from the All-Star Game next week.

The 58-year-old Francona, who had been experiencing dizziness, fatigue and a rapid heart rate over the last month, had a cardiac ablation performed on Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic.

Francona has been hospitalized and undergoing tests since Tuesday, when he was admitted after doctors detected an arrhythmia when reading a monitor the manager has been wearing for several weeks.

The Indians said Friday that Francona is resting comfortably in the hospital and is expected to be discharged in a ''day or two.''

His health will prevent him from managing the American League squad in Miami next week. Indians bench coach Brad Mills, who has been filling in while Francona has been ill, will likely manage the AL team, which includes five Cleveland players.

Francona earned the opportunity to manage the All-Star team after guiding the Indians to the World Series last season, the team's first since 1997.

The Indians said in a statement that Francona is expected to return to his managing duties following the break. The team begins the unofficial second half of the season on July 14 in Oakland to start a six-game trip.

Francona had been forced to leave two games last month when he became lightheaded during games. He underwent tests following both episodes and team president Chris Antonetti said earlier this week that doctors had ruled out any major health issues.

Francona also missed a game in Washington last August after he experienced chest pains.

During a series last weekend in Detroit, Francona wasn't feeling well again and doctors decided to admit him to the Cleveland Clinic on July 4 after seeing an abnormality on his heart readings.

In his fifth season with Cleveland, Francona is hugely popular with his players and Indians fans, who affectionately refer to him as ''Tito,'' his father's name.

His absence was noticeable in recent days as players worried about his health and wondered when he would be back.

''We think about him all the time,'' pitcher Josh Tomlin said after Thursday night's win over San Diego. ''I bet he's not too happy in the hospital on a daily basis. We need him at the helm here. There's no doubt about it. He's big part of our success. He knows the game. He knows the players really well. His presence alone has that sense of calm in the dugout.

''Obviously, we want his health to be fine first before he comes back but we're itching to get him back,'' Tomlin said.

Francona joined the Indians in 2013 after spending one year as a TV commentator following a messy departure in Boston, where he took the Red Sox to two World Series titles in eight seasons.

                July 7, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) Carlos Carrasco handled Detroit's lineup for the second time in a week - striking out a season-high 11 and pulling off a rare nine-pitch, three-strikeout inning - and Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-run homer, leading the Cleveland Indians to an 11-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

Carrasco (10-3) allowed two runs in seven innings to win his fifth straight decision. He limited the Tigers to one run in seven innings on July 1.

The right-hander also recorded an ''immaculate inning'' by striking out the side in the fifth on nine pitches. Carrasco is just the second pitcher in Cleveland history to do it, joining Justin Masterson (2014).

Chisenhall connected in Cleveland's five-run third off Jordan Zimmerman (5-7), who remains winless since June 3.

Michael Brantley had four RBIs, Francisco Lindor drove in three and rookie Bradley Zimmer homered for the Indians, who played their fourth straight game without manager Terry Francona. He remains in the Cleveland Clinic following a heart procedure.

                ASTROS 12, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - George Springer homered twice and tied a career high with five RBIs as Houston rocked Aaron Sanchez in his return from the disabled list, propelling the Astros over Toronto.

Springer hit his 26th and 27th homers of the season, including a two-run shot off Sanchez (0-2) in the second inning. The All-Star outfielder had four hits, and the Astros improved their major league-leading record to 59-28.

Making his first appearance since May because of a blister on his pitching hand, Sanchez allowed a career-high eight runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Houston's Carlos Correa extended the longest active hitting streak in the majors to a career-high 15 with his 18th homer in the first inning. Evan Gattis added his seventh homer in the seventh.

The support eased Charlie Morton's (6-3) return to action. The right-hander, sidelined since May 24 with a right lat strain, gave Houston one-run ball over six innings, surrendering four hits to tie his season low.

                BREWERS 9, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Jesus Aguilar homered twice and matched a Brewers record with seven RBIs, including a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning that sent Milwaukee past skidding New York for its fifth straight victory.

The surprising NL Central leaders overcame a season-high five errors and a record-breaking homer by Aaron Judge to win at Yankee Stadium for the first time in exactly 21 years. Back then, the Brewers were still in the American League - they switched to the NL in 1998 and had dropped 14 of their last 15 in the Bronx, including a 10-game losing streak they snapped in this interleague series opener.

Rookie left-hander Josh Hader (1-0) struck out seven over three innings of effective relief for his first major league win.

The highlight for New York was Judge's major league-leading 30th home run, which broke Joe DiMaggio's record for most by a Yankees rookie set in 1936.

Struggling reliever Tyler Clippard (1-5) gave up Aguilar's first career slam on a full-count fastball that gave Milwaukee an 8-4 advantage.

                CUBS 6, PIRATES 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant hit two homers and drove in four runs, Anthony Rizzo went deep and Chicago beat Pittsburgh.

Rizzo chased Trevor Williams (3-4) with a two-run drive in the fourth that made it 3-0.

Bryant hit a solo shot against Jhan Marinez in the sixth that cleared the left-field bleachers and added a two-run drive in the eighth off Antonio Bastardo. He also had an RBI triple and finished with four hits, helping Chicago start the weekend series on a winning note after dropping six of nine.

Carl Edwards Jr. (3-1) threw 1 2/3 innings. Pedro Strop gave up an RBI single to Josh Bell in the seventh. But Koji Uehara retired the side in the eighth, and Wade Davis worked the ninth.

                RED SOX 8, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Dustin Pedroia, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Hanley Ramirez each homered, Drew Pomeranz won his third consecutive start and Boston beat Tampa Bay.

Pedroia hit a two-run shot during a four-run third, and Bradley had a fourth-inning solo drive off Jake Odorizzi (5-4) as Boston took a 5-0 lead.

Pomeranz (9-4) limited Tampa Bay to two runs over six innings despite allowing six hits and five walks.

Steven Souza Jr. hit a solo homer in the seventh for the Rays, who beat Chris Sale and the AL East-leading Red Sox 4-1 in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night. The Rays, third in the division, trail Boston by 5 1/2 games.

                NATIONALS 5, BRAVES 4, 10 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Daniel Murphy's one-out RBI single in the 10th inning capped Washington's comeback victory over Atlanta.

Adrian Sanchez led off the 10th against Ian Krol (1-2) with his first major league hit and two batters later moved to third on Ryan Zimmerman's single. Murphy lofted an opposite-field single over left fielder Matt Kemp's head to win it.

Matt Albers (5-1) induced Kemp's double play grounder to end the 10th to help the Nationals escape a two-on jam.

                TWINS 9, ORIOLES 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Kennys Vargas had three hits, including a big two-run double in the fifth inning, hours after being recalled from the minors to help lead Minnesota over Baltimore.

Trevor Hildenberger (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for his first major league win as the Twins rallied from a 6-0 hole to send Baltimore to its fifth straight defeat. Vargas' two-run double off reliever Miguel Castro (1-1) tied the score in the fifth, and Chris Gimenez's RBI single completed the impressive comeback one batter later.

Manny Machado homered twice and had his second four-hit game of the year. Seth Smith also homered as he and Machado went deep back-to-back to lead off the game against Twins rookie Felix Jorge.

                DODGERS 4, ROYALS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasiel Puig homered, Chase Utley notched his 1,000th career RBI and NL West-leading Los Angeles beat Kansas City in the opener of the Royals' first visit to Dodger Stadium since 2003.

The Dodgers won their fourth in a row behind Kenta Maeda (7-4). The Japanese right-hander gave up one run and four hits in five innings, struck out five and walked two while bouncing back from a poor outing.

Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth to earn his 21st save in 21 chances. The Dodgers improved to a major league-best 37-11 at home.

Puig hit his 16th homer off Jason Hammel (4-8) in the sixth to make it 3-1.

                DIAMODNBACKS 6, REDS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Zack Greinke threw seven scoreless innings and Paul Goldschmidt hit his 20th homer to help Arizona beat Cincinnati.

Arizona rebounded from a crushing 5-4 loss in Los Angeles a night earlier when closer Fernando Rodney blew a three-run lead in the ninth. The Dodgers swept the Diamondbacks, winning all three games by a run.

Greinke (11-4) allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked one. The right-hander is 9-0 at home, and the Diamondbacks are 33-13 - matching their victory total from last season.

Rodney got Tucker Barnhart to ground out to second for his 22nd save.

Joey Votto and Schebler homered in the ninth for Cincinnati. Tim Adleman (5-6) took the loss.

                ROCKIES 12, WHITE SOX 4

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado homered and drove in five runs, German Marquez tossed seven strong innings and had two hits and Colorado's slumbering offense awoke in a win over Chicago.

Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu also went deep as Colorado broke out of prolonged slump. The Rockies banged out a season-high 17 hits and were 7 of 14 with runners in scoring position. They hit just .226 and .216 with runners in scoring position while losing 12 of their previous 15.

Marquez (6-4) cruised through six innings before allowing Tim Anderson's 451-foot two-run homer in the seventh. He allowed three runs and nine hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter while tossing a season-high 102 pitches.

Chicago's Derek Holland (5-9) gave up seven runs and eight hits in just four innings in his first career start at Coors Field.

                METS 6, CARDINALS 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jose Reyes and Jay Bruce hit solo home runs to help Jacob deGrom win his fifth straight decision, and New York beat St. Louis.

Bruce's homer in the fifth broke a 4-4 tie. It was his 11th home run in 61 career games at Busch Stadium.

DeGrom (9-3) gave up four runs, all on solo homers, in seven innings. It was the first time in his career that deGrom gave up four home runs in a game, but it was good enough to tie his career-best winning streak set in 2014.

Addison Reed earned his 15th save in 17 chances.

                RANGERS 10, ANGELS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Cole Hamels threw 7 2/3 innings and Adrian Beltre's three-run homer highlighted a five-run second inning as Texas beat Los Angeles.

Hamels (4-0) allowed three singles, two to Albert Pujols, and one walk. He struck out six, matching his season high, in his third start since returning from the disabled list on June 26.

Ricky Nolasco (4-10) was rocked for eight earned runs in 1 2/3 innings and gave up back-to-back homers to Beltre and Rougned Odor. He entered the game with 15 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings that included his sixth career shutout.

                MARINERS 7, ATHLETICS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit his 300th home run and drove in five, James Paxton allowed two hits over seven innings and Seattle beat Oakland.

Paxton (7-3) did not allow a hit after Marcus Semien's two-run double in the second. The left-hander matched a season high with nine strikeouts while walking three and hitting a batter.

Sean Manaea (7-5) gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings.

                MARLINS 6, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton hit his 24th home run to back another strong start by Dan Straily (7-4), and Miami beat San Francisco.

J.T. Realmuto also homered and had three hits, Dee Gordon added four hits and JT Riddle drove in two runs to help the Marlins win the opener of their final series before the All-Star break.

The Marlins batted around during a four-run first inning highlighted by Stanton's opposite field two-run homer off starter Matt Moore (3-9).

                PADRES 4, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Austin Hedges hit a pair of solo homers and had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth, Jose Pirela also went deep and San Diego beat Philadelphia.

After Cory Spangenberg and Carlos Asuaje hit singles off Hector Neris (2-3), Hedges fouled off a safety squeeze before hitting a fly ball to right-center that drove in the go-ahead run.

Padres starter Clayton Richard allowed one run and five hits in six innings before a 94-minute rain delay forced him out. Brad Hand (2-4) got four outs for the win and Brandon Maurer finished for his 18th save.

                  • Weekend Outlook
                    July 7, 2017

Milwaukee (48-40) at New York Yankees (44-39)
Scheduled Rotation: Guerra (1-3) vs. Montgomery (6-4), Suter (1-1) vs. Severino (5-4), Nelson (7-4) vs. Tanaka (7-7)
Series Price: Yankees -250, Brewers +210

The Yankees are 25-15 at home, but they're playing extremely sluggish lately and have lost four of their last five. They're a large -250 favorite at Station Casinos to win the series, but these new-look Brewers are no joke. I think we've all been saying for the past two months that they're just warming up the first-place slot for the Cubs, but after a while you have to give the club credit for battling and winning games. They've won seven of their last eight, including a major statement win Thursday at Wrigley Field. They buried the Cubs 11-2 in a make-up game. I don't like their pitching, but they keep making it happen and their hot. Yankees are not. I'm betting Milwaukee to take two of three here and win the series.

                    Atlanta (41-43) at Washington (50-35)
Scheduled Rotation: Dickey (6-5) vs. Scherzer (10-5), Teheran (6-6) vs. Strasburg (9-2), Newcomb (1-3) vs. Ross (5-3)
Series Price: Nationals -310, Braves +255 (started Thursday)

Well, here you go Atlanta. It's a chance to make up some ground in the National League East where you sit 8.5 games back. But damn, this offense of the Nats leads the league in almost every category and feature not only the No. 1 hitter with Daniel Murphy (.341), but they also have No. 2 with Ryan Zimmerman (.330) and No. 4 with Bryce Harper (.324). There's no easy outs with this lineup and someone new, beyond those All-Stars, seem to step up nightly. The Braves have been beaten like a drum in this series losing 36 times in the last 51 meetings. But the quality play of the Braves lately has helped them be a good 'under' bet. They've gone 12-4-1 to the 'under' in their last 17. The Nats have gone 8-3 to the 'under' in their last 11. That might be the approach to this series over the weekend.

                    Detroit (38-46) at Cleveland (45-39)
Scheduled Rotation: Zimmermann (5-6) vs. Carrasco (9-3), Verlander (5-5) vs. Clevinger (4-3), Fulmer (8-6) vs. Kluber (7-3)
Series Price: Indians -300, Tigers +240

Cleveland is 19-23 at home this season and it's the starters that have been letting the club down. Those were the guys that made a World Series appearance happen last season. Fortunately, they still have the best bullpen in baseball and it's part of the reason why they are the best 'under' team in baseball. They don't allow garbage runs after the starters leave the game. On the other side, the Tigers are packing it in and reports of them shopping ace Jason Verlander proves that cause. They look like a team that doesn't care anymore. They've only won once in their last 10 games as an underdog. Carlos Carrasco starts Friday and the Indians have won eight of his last nine starts against Detroit. The Indians are the best 'under' team, but 27 of the last 33 meetings with the Tigers in Cleveland have gone 'over' the number.

White Sox (37-47) at Colorado (50-38)
Scheduled Rotation: Holland (5-8) vs. Marquez (5-4), Quintana (4-8) vs. Hoffman (5-1), Rodon (1-1) vs. Freeland (8-7)
Series Price: Rockies -250, White Sox +210

The White Sox are hot and Colorado is falling into the abyss. The Rockies have become a great 'under' team, especially lately as they've stayed 'under' in their last six games. Good pitching, light hitting, and the altitude hasn't seemed to matter much. The Sox, however, have been mashing the ball and have gone 'over' in their last six. The best bet of the weekend is probably betting the 'under' on Sunday with Denver native Kyle Freeland pitching. I've never seen a Rockies pitcher take to Coors Field elements like him and I think it's just because he's pitched in Denver his entire life. He's gone 14-2-1 to the 'under' in his 17 starts so far which makes him the best 'under' pitcher in baseball.

Kansas City (44-40) at LA Dodgers (58-29)
Scheduled Rotation: Hammel (4-7) vs. Maeda (6-4), Kennedy (3-6) vs. McCarthy (6-3), Duffy (5-4) vs. Kershaw (13-2)
Series Price: Dodgers -330, Royals +270

Who is hotter here? The Dodgers just come off recent sweeps of division foes in Colorado and Arizona and have won six of their last seven. Kansas City has been bashing the ball and find themselves only one game out of first-place in the American League Central after being 10 games behind last month. They've won four straight coming in and six of their seven as well. That revived Kansas City offense has helped them go 13-3 to the 'over' in their last 16 road games. Sunday's game can be almost automatically give to the Dodgers because Kershaw is starting -- they've won 16 of his 18 starts. But I think Saturday offers great value with Ian Kennedy who is throwing his best lately for the Royals. I think the series comes down to Friday's game and being able to get +260 on the Royals makes it a worthwhile proposition.

                    • LEADING OFF: Cubs try closing strong, Francona still out
                      July 7, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                      CUB STEPS

Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and the Chicago Cubs can ensure themselves at least a .500 record at the All-Star break with a win against the Pirates. The World Series champions had higher hopes for the first half, but they're still within range of the NL Central-leading Brewers and their top sluggers are in prime form. Bryant homered twice and Rizzo got his 20th of the season in a win over Pittsburgh on Friday, and those two have combined for 38 homers and 94 RBIs this season. They'll try to ensure a series win behind right-hander Jake Arrieta (8-6, 4.33), who will face Pittsburgh's Ivan Nova (8-6, 3.24).

                      HEALING TITO

Cleveland's Terry Francona won't return to managing until after the All-Star break following a procedure Thursday to correct an irregular heartbeat. The 58-year-old Francona had been experiencing dizziness, fatigue and a rapid heart rate for several weeks. He had a cardiac ablation at the Cleveland Clinic, where he continues to recover after being admitted Tuesday. Francona won't lead the AL All-Star team Tuesday in Miami, and the plan is for him to return to the Indians when they open the second half at Oakland on July 14.

                      MAC IS BACK

Brandon McCarthy is expected to come off the DL to start the Dodgers' game against the Royals. McCarthy has been out since June 25 with right knee tendinitis, but he's been mostly solid when healthy, going 6-3 with a 3.25 ERA. Ian Kennedy (3-6, 4.44) will pitch for Kansas City and hasn't allowed more than two earned runs over his past four starts.

                      STRAS' TURN

Stephen Strasburg gets his final start before the All-Star break when the Nationals host the Braves. Strasburg (9-2, 3.28), headed to his third All-Star Game next Tuesday, is coming off seven scoreless innings against the Mets and hasn't lost since June 7 against the Dodgers. Julio Teheran (6-6, 5.14) tries to end a disappointing first half on a high note for Atlanta.

                      STICKING AROUND

Mike Clevinger is working on holding down a rotation spot with Cleveland, and he'll try to extend a strong stretch in a start against Detroit. Clevinger (4-3, 3.33) is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in four starts since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus last month. He'll face struggling Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander (5-5, 4.96), who this week acknowledged that he could be traded if Detroit doesn't turn its season around soon.

                          • MLB betting at the break: Best and worst wagers so far this season

The All-Star break is nearly upon us and that means it’s time to take stock of the good, the bad and the ugly MLB bettors have witnessed during the season’s first half.

Let’s review the best and worst bets of the first three months of the 2017 season.

                            Best runline team

                            Houston Astros: 51-35

The runline, for novice baseball bettors, is just like a puckline in hockey. It’s a way to bet baseball games with a spread rather than a moneyline. The runline is always + or -1.5 runs.

It should come as no surprise that the best team in baseball is also the best runline bet. The Astros own the best road record in the majors, which plays a big part in their 51-35 runline record. The few games the ‘Stros are not favored normally happen away from Minute Maid Park.

It helps too when Houston’s starters at the backend of the rotation are winning at a handsome clip.

                            Worst runline team

                            Chicago Cubs: 32-53

A .500 record in baseball isn’t anything to get too worried or too excited about. It’s a lot like favored rice crackers in the snack tree. It’s fine.

The problem with the Cubbies is that they’re coming off a coming off a 103-win season. A .500 record for this team would be like Ryan Gosling dating a 7. OK, she’s not ugly but you’re Ryan effing Gosling! What the hell are you doing with a 7?

Oddsmakers favor the team frequently because of the high expectations and the talent on the roster. The Cubs are still among the top favorites to win the World Series at 10/1 despite their mediocre first half.

                            Best Over team

                            New York Mets: 48-25-10

The Tampa Rays have cashed more Over tickets (51) but the high number of pushes keeps the Mets as the most profitable Over bet.

New York’s whole identity from 2016 has flip-flopped a year later. Last season the Mets allowed the third fewest runs and only four teams touched home plate less often than the Mets.

This season, the Mets own the third worst team ERA at 4.92 and their offense is middle of the pack. Oddsmakers have adjusted but if you were betting the Over with the Mets in the first two months of the season, you were winning at a 73.8 percent rate.

                            Best Under team

                            Cleveland Indians: 30-49-5

You’d think the Indians would be a good Over team in 2017 with the addition of professional ball-blaster Edwin Encarnacion and a healthy Michael Brantley in the lineup.

The club’s offense is on par with last year’s run produced per game, but that’s just not good enough to stay in elite company with 2017’s jacked home run rate.

Last season, the average MLB team scored 4.5 runs per game. This year, that number has climbed to 4.7.

                            Best money team

                            Houston Astros: $1960

Moneyline, as we all know, helps us measure how profitable a given team is based on $100 wagers on each of the club’s games. So, if you bet $100 on the ‘Stros in each of their games you be up $1960 or 19.6 units.

Same reasoning here for the Astros as there was for their runline record. They own the best record in the majors, they win games with their fourth and fifth starters and they’re winning 76 percent of their road games.

                            Worst money team

                            San Francisco Giants: -$2179

It doesn’t help playing in a division with three teams playing .570 or better. It also doesn’t help when you’re most effective starting pitcher is Johnny Cueto.

The Giants blog McCovey Chronicles asked an excellent question: Who would be the Giants All-Star selection this year if Buster Posey wasn’t on the team?
                            Search me. This team stinks.

                            Best money starting pitcher

                            Clayton Kershaw: $1160

Just a reminder: Clayton Kershaw is really fricken’ good. The Dodgers are 16-2 in games he’s taken the hill including that gem on Tuesday when threw seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

If Kershaw is too expensive for your taste, consider Jason Vargas. He might be the pitching story of the first half of the season for bettors.

The journeyman hurler is putting together his finest season in his 14th year in the bigs. The Kansas City Royals are 13-4 in his 17 starts and up 10.8 units.

                            Worst money starting pitcher

                            Jerad Eickhoff: -$1053

It could have been any Philadelphia Phillies starter, really. Eickhoff just has the… honor(?) of being the Phils ace of the rotation. He’s come back down to earth after a breakout year in 2016. He carries a 4.93 ERA and the Phillies are just 2-12 in his 14 starts this season.
